Guide to santa justa lift: insider tips, history & more.

Santa Justa Lift in Lisbon in Portugal

The Santa Justa Lift, which carries passengers between Lisbon's upper and lower neighborhoods, is more than just a shortcut to Bairro Alto; it’s also one of Lisbon’s best attractions.

The wrought-iron tower, built in 1902, is one of the most characteristic places of the Portuguese capital. Stretching high into the sky, it is visible from many points and boasts far-reaching views of the Lisbon’s skyline. It's no wonder that Santa Justa is among the most visited spots in the city.

In this guide, you will learn everything you need to know before your visit, including the timetable, history and tickets.

Let’s start!

Entrance, Tickets, and Tours to Santa Justa Lift

  • Entrance: Every Day from 7:30-21:00 (Nov-Feb) & 7:00-23:00 (Mar-Oct)
  • Tickets: The Santa Justa Lift is part of the public transport system, that’s why the ride on the elevator is included in the 24-hour public transport ticket. Holders of public transport cards, such as Viva Viagem or Lisboa Viva can use the elevator for a one-way fee which is equivalent to a bus ride. Visitors who don’t have a public transport card can purchase a ticket at the ticket office onsite. The ticket price is €5.30 (return).
  • The admission fee for the observation deck is €1.50.
  • Travelers' Tips: Lisboa Card  holders can use the elevator for free and have free access to the observation deck. Get your Lisboa Card here!

Things to do at Santa Justa Lift in Lisbon

Things to do at Santa Justa Lift

More than 100 years old, the 45-meter-high Elevador de Santa Justa is the city's only public vertical lift. It connects the lower streets of the Baixa district with the higher district of Bairro Alto. This made it a great help for locals, who used it to avoid the steep climb up the hill.

Its observation deck, on the other hands, allows for stunning panoramic views of downtown Lisbon. Here are more highlights:

1. Admire the Architecture

The elaborately designed Elevador de Santa Justa is not only a functional construction, but also a work of art . That's why it is worth taking a closer look at the design of the elevator.

Built in a Neo-Gothic style, the beautiful exterior is almost entirely wrought iron. It features filigree work, geometric patterns and elegant neo-gothic arches.

You may be surprised to find similarities with the Eiffel Tower. These are by no means coincidental. Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, who was responsible for the design of the Santa Justa elevator, is said to have been an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel and to have been inspired by the Eiffel Tower as he admired its craftsmanship and design.

Take a Ride in the Vintage Cabin of Santa Justa Lift in Lisbon

2. Take a Ride in the Vintage Cabin

Hop into one of the two old-fashioned wooden cabins, appointed with shaded mirrors and brass dials, and enjoy a nostalgic ride seven stories (32 meters) up . Interestingly, the elevator can carry twenty people up, but only fifteen down.

Since a ride on this famed structure is one of the top things to do for tourists visiting Lisbon, you should expect long queues throughout the day, especially in the peak season. It is advisable to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize waiting time.

The top floor , which is also accessible via Largo do Carmo without an admission fee, offers a magnificent view over the center of Lisbon.

Tip : Instead of traveling up, you can walk to the top of the hill and catch the elevator for a ride back down. Not only are the queues much shorter, but the one-way ticket for the downhill ride is also cheaper.

  • Route: Rua do Ouro / Rua de Santa Justa – Largo do Carmo
  • Schedule: See the timetable of Santa Justa Lift here .

Enjoy the View from the Observation Deck of Santa Justa Lift

3. Enjoy the View from the Observation Deck

Reaching the top, a spiral staircase will lead you to the panoramic terrace of the Santa Justa Lift. From here, you can enjoy 360-degrees views of the city , including the Tagus River, São Jorge Castle , the Carmo Convent ruins, lively Rossio Square and the Baixa neighborhood .

Seeing the iconic building at night with its romantic atmosphere is also very rewarding. It is not only the appearance of the illuminated Santa Justa Lift that is truly breathtaking, but also the view of the city's dazzling sea of lights.

The observation deck is open daily from 9:00 to 23:00 in summer and from 9:00 to 21:00 in winter.

Please note that there is an admission fee for access to the observation deck.

Tip: You don't have to use the lift to visit the viewing platform. If you want to get to the top but avoid the long queues, you can instead climb the stairs along the side of the Carmo Convent or take the hidden elevator inside the  Cork Shop on Rua do Carmo. Both alternatives will bring you to the top street to access the viewing deck without paying for a ride in the lift.

The Elevador de Santa Justa, also known as the Elevador do Carmo , was built in 1900 to provide locals with an easier commute up and down the steep hill. It was inaugurated two years later.

Originally, the elevator was powered by a steam engine, which was replaced by an electric motor a few years later.

In 2002, the Elevador de Santa Justa was declared a National Monument. After extensive renovation work, the elevator reopened its doors in 2006. Today, the Santa Justa Lift is operated by the Companhia da Carris and serves primarily as a tourist attraction.

Santa Justa Elevator, Lisbon

The landmark Santa Justa Elevator

T his century-old iron tower is an elevator that links downtown to the Chiado district up on the hill, which is accessed through a walkway at the top. It boasts some of the best views over the center of Lisbon , so although it was built for public transportation, it’s now mostly used by tourists. It’s 45 meters high (148 ft), and one of Lisbon’s most photographed landmarks .

At the top, by the walkway that leads to Largo do Carmo in Chiado, is a narrow spiral staircase that goes up to the observation deck. It offers a 360º-view over Baixa, above Rossio Square all the way to the top of the triumphal arch on the waterfront. It’s beautiful during the day but also worth visiting at night, with the illuminated city below -- it closes at 9pm from November to April, and only at 11pm from May to September.

View of the castle from the top of the Santa Justa Elevator

There’s a reason why the structure’s architecture may remind you of the Eiffel Tower in Paris -- it was built by Raul Mesnier de Pondard, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel. It was inaugurated in 1902, fifteen years after the famous French landmark. Both monuments make artful use of iron, with the elevator featuring a neo-gothic style. Originally powered by steam, it was electrified in 1907. It was classified as a national monument in 2002. The top is connected to the ruined Carmo Convent . Behind it is a large terrace where drinks and light meals are served throughout the day, while inside the gothic monument is a small archaeological museum and the haunting ruins that stand as a reminder of the devastating earthquake of 1755.

The elevator’s two wooden cabins only take 29 people at a time, so during the day you may have to wait in line for a while. You may avoid that by entering through Largo do Carmo, following the path to the right of the ruined convent.

How to Get to the Santa Justa Elevator

To go up the elevator, head to Rua do Ouro, a few feet from Rossio Square, which can be reached by metro (green line). You may also ride it down from Largo do Carmo, which is a short walk from the Baixa-Chiado station of the metro (blue or green line). You may ride the elevator, as well as the metro and other public transportation for free with the Lisboa Card .

Admission and Tickets to Santa Justa Elevator

Access to the observation deck is €1.50, while the ticket to ride up and down the elevator is €5.30. It’s free with the Lisboa Card . There can be long lines at the ticket counter at the base of the monument, so in order to save time, buy the Lisboa Card or a 24-hour public transport ticket (which costs €6.45 and can only be purchased at metro stations) beforehand. The 24-hour ticket, however, only allows you to go up and down the elevator; it doesn’t include the observation deck.

The Santa Justa eelvator is a 45-metre-high cast-iron structure in the shape of a tower. The upper floor of the lift is connected to the upper exit of Largo do Carmo by a 25-metre footbridge. The two cabins of the lift, each with a capacity for 29 people, are made of wood and decorated with carvings. All the metal structures and supports of the lift are decorated with neo-gothic casts, which contrasts with the Carmelite convent next door.

Initially Lisbon’s elevators were steam engines but in 1907 they were electrified for greater cleanliness and less noise. At the top of the tower is an observation deck with two spiral staircases. To reach the observation deck, you don’t need to take the lift, you can enter it through the footbridge of the Santa Justa lift.

Exactly 100 years after its opening in 2002, the Santa Justa lift in Lisbon and the funiculars have been declared national monuments. Today, the elevator is one of the most visited attractions in the Portuguese capital and one of the 10 best places to visit in Lisbon .

Creator of the Santa Justa elevator: Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard

To avoid confusion, all cable cars, ski lifts and elevators in Portugal are simply called “elevador”, which means “lift”.

It was at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that elevators began to be built all over Portugal. And the main actor of these constructions was the Portuguese engineer of French origin Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard. It was he who designed and built the Santa Justa lift.

This architect was also one of the best engineers of the time and at the origin of many constructions, but he was not very well known in the world and in Portugal. He is called the pupil of Gustave Eiffel (you will notice the resemblance of materials between the Santa Justa lift in Lisbon and the Eiffel Tower in Paris) but paradoxically he was never his pupil.  Like many engineers of the time, he used his techniques and followed “fashion”, which is strongly felt in the Santa Justa lift.

Raul Mesnier Ponsard creator elevator santa justa lisbon

He was born in 1849 in Porto in the family of the French industrialist Jacques de Ponsard. After high school, Raoul entered the University of Coimbra and simultaneously took two courses in mathematics and philosophy. Feeling the need to deepen his knowledge, Raoul went abroad and it was there that he finally decided he wanted to get involved in engineering. France, Germany, Switzerland: he travels the world to acquire the most advanced knowledge.

In Switzerland, he had the opportunity to work in the workshop of the famous engineer Niklaus Riggenbach, a ski lift specialist. It was Riggenbach, the inventor of the cog railway and the ballast ropeway, who became his mentor and gave direction to his future career in Portugal. Back home, the creator of the Santa Justa lift built the first cable car on the Iberian peninsula, the Elevador do Bom Jesus do Monte. This project earned him a resounding success and a reputation as an outstanding engineer. His mentor Riggenbach himself came to Portugal for the opening ceremony of the new lift, which took place in Braga in 1882.

Construction of the other Elevador de Lisboa

Lisbon cableway

The first elevator in Lisbon was built by Ponsar in 1892 in the lobby of the former Universal Hotel. It was a 4-floor walk from Rua do Crucifixo in Baixa to Rua Garrett in Chiado (Lisbon’s district). In 1913, during the reconstruction of the Armazéns do Chiado shopping centre, the elevator was integrated. Over time, the old design was replaced by a modern elevator.

Another elevator, the Elevador do Município, was built in 1897 and connected St. Julian’s Square (Largo de São Julião – now Praça do Município) to the Library Square (Largo da Biblioteca, now Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas Artes) by a metal bridge over the terrace of the Visconde Palace in Coruche. This lift operated continuously until 1915 and was stopped only once during the unsuccessful coup of January 28, 1908, called “O Golpe do Elevador da Biblioteca” (The Lift of the Library). In 1915, the elevator was shut down.

The Santa Justa lift project was proposed to the Lisbon City Council in 1892, but was not approved immediately and construction did not begin until 1900. On August 31, 1901, a bridge was built between the lift tower and Piazza do Carmo. The operation of the construction was complicated: the Lisbon City Council prohibited the construction of supports, temporary structures and the blocking of the adjacent street.

Ponsar found a solution by articulating one end of the walkway to the lift tower. The other end of the bridge structure was lifted by winches to the upper entrance. The operation lasted about 4 hours and went smoothly. The operation was well attended and the bridge was opened by King Carlos I personally. Subsequently, almost a year’s work was needed to install and test all the mechanisms of the Santa Justa lift in Lisbon.

Santa Justa Lift Lisbon old photo

On July 10, 1902, the Santa Justa elevator was opened to the public. Many people from Lisbon rushed to take it, climb up and admire the panorama from the platform of the elevator. This new view of Lisbon was as much talked about as the lift itself. At noon, the cabin was put into service and the first group of users was greeted by the national anthem sung by the military band. It was a national event.

The Santa Justa elevator made the front page of every newspaper with headlines of congratulations. Unfortunately, the creator Ponsar was ill and could not attend the opening ceremony.

Lift santa justa de LIsbonne by night

Recently, from the upper entrance of the Santa Justa lift bridge, stairs were opened leading to Chiado, Garrett Street and the vast terraces of the Convento do Carmo, which are located at the foot of the ruined cathedral.

These terraces are full of trendy bars and very popular with Lisbon’s young people.

Elevador de Santa Justa

The  Elevador de Santa Justa  is one of those attractions that make Lisbon a unique city; how many other cities are there where tourists are fascinated by a huge… lift?

Although it is absolutely charming, walking around Lisbon sometimes can be a little too tiring due to its steep ups and downs. In order to help residents and tourists, elevators and cable cars allow to move from an area to another of the city avoiding its steepest and most demanding climbs.

Thanks to the Elevador de Santa Justa moving from the district of  Baixa  to Carmo hill  is not just fast and easy, but also very fascinating. Thanks to its designer, this elevator – which was built in order to be a functional project – became a real architectonic magnificence characterized by a steel structure, elegant wooden cabins, and different decorations at each floor.

Admire this beautiful structure and go up to its panoramic terrace in order to enjoy a breathtaking view of Baixa and then, just like a real local, find yourself in another area of the city.

Why visiting the Elevador de Santa Justa

The Elevador de Santa Justa, also known as the  Elevador do Carmo , conquers all tourists that can’t resist to the past of Lisbon and its old means of transport. It is characterized by a romantic and vintage charme, but at the same time it is a masterpiece of engineering and an avant-garde project for the times of its construction.

At the top of the tower there is an elegant caffetteria. From here it is possible to enjoy a magnificent view of the  Baixa , Rossio, the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river .

It is beautiful all day long, however at night the elevator is illuminated and it is wonderful to photograph, not to mention the magical atmosphere you can breath on the panoramic terrace. It is a must visit place!

The Elevador de Santa Justa in numbers

  • The elevator structure is 45 meters high
  • The  gap  covered by the lift is 30 meters
  • The lift’s wooden  cabins  can hold up to 29 people

Tickets to the Elevador de Santa Justa

In order to visit the Elevador de Santa Justa  there are different kinds of tickets; some allow only the use of the elevator, some allow to visit only the panoramic terrace, and others can be used for both.

Lisbon public transport cards , like Lisboa Viva, 7Colinas or Viva Viagem, can be used to ride elevators or cable cars, including the Elevador de Santa Justa.

If you don’t own any of these cards, you can still purchase your ticket at the ticket office located behind the tower, although the price of the ticket may be a little slightly more expensive.

Use of the lift and access to the rooftop terrace are free for Lisboa Card holders.

A little bit of history

The  Elevador de Santa Justa  is the only public vertical elevator of Lisbon. The project was designed by Raul Mesnier de Ponsard , an engineer from France living in Portugal who designed another elevator of Lisbon, that is to say the  Elevador do Lavra . Apparently he was a student of Gustave Eiffel, author of the famous Eiffel tower. Although many experts may disagree on this assumption, a French taste in the construction of the elevator is undeniable.

Construction works started in 1898 and the elevator was inaugurated at the beginning of the century. During the first two years it was powered by steam, then the lift was converted to electrical operation. It is one of the most visited attractions of Lisbon.

The use of the elevator and the access to the panoramic view are  free for Lisboa Card holders .

The easy way up with the Santa Justa Elevator

In the middle of Lisbon’s city centre, you’ll discover a  unique structure . It’s the  45-meter-tall Santa Justa Elevator  from the 19th century! As you might know, Lisbon is built on  seven hills . Walking up and down those hills all day can be challenging, and there are  several shortcuts  to find. The Santa Justa Lift is one of them!

Santa Justa Lift at Rua do Carmo

The Santa Justa Lift, or  Elevador de Santa Justa , became a much-needed structure as part of  the public transport system  in Lisbon. Nowadays, it’s more like a tourist attraction, and you will probably not spot any locals taking the lift up. The Santa Justa Elevator rides between the lower streets of  Rua do Ouro  in the Baixa (low) district and  Largo do Carmo . It’s a ride well worth taking!

The Carmo Lift structure

The cast iron elevator perhaps reminds you of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. You’ll spot gorgeous  neo-gothic style details and arches , and the wooden lift brings you up glamorously! You’ll notice the elegantly decorated interior with brass and wood inside the elevator.

The construction of the Santa Justa Elevator started in 1900 and was designed by designer  Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard . Gustave Eiffel inspired him, so you can see where the resemblance to the Eiffel Tower comes from! The builders even used some of the same techniques. Other structures designed by Mesnier de Ponsard are  Elevador de Glória , Elevador da Nazaré, Elevador do Bom Jesus in Braga, and  Funicular dos Guindais  in Porto.

Santa Justa Elevator

On July 10th 1902, the elevator opened to the public, but  King Carlos I  had already inaugurated the tower and the walkway in August 1901. On that first day,  3,000 tickets had already been sold ! After only six months, the lift was used by 500.000 people. Back in those days, it was originally powered by steam.

In 1907, the steam engine was  replaced by an electric motor . The Santa Justa Elevator has been a national monument since 2002. The three remaining cable railways, Lavra, Glória and Bica, were declared national monuments in the same year.

Insanely long queues at the Santa Justa Lift

Due to the popularity, the queue, unfortunately, can be long! You’re better off trying to  arrive here early or later in the day  to avoid a long waiting time. It can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours in summer.

As Elevador de Santa Justa is part of the public transport system, it runs by a schedule . Every 10 minutes or so, a full lift will go up to Largo do Carmo. The elevator has two cabins with space for only 29 people, so the queue can be extensive. You can take the Carmo Lift down or  visit some sights on this Lisbon hill .

You may want to skip riding the Santa Just Lift but still go to the Bairro Alto district. Then, the easiest way is to take the  escalators inside the Baixa-Chiado station . Discover the best routes! There are many ways to discover the Lisbon hills .

The viewing platform

You reach the viewing platform after you’ve got the Elevador de Santa Justa or walked up. In the front, you have two spiral staircases. The spiral staircase is usually closed to the public. You will enjoy panoramic views from the top floor, and you can see many neighbourhoods in Lisbon. You can see the Baixa district below , the Carmo Church , Lisbon Castle on the other hill, and the river Tagus.

If you want to skip a ride on the Santa Justa Elevator, you can access the viewpoint for FREE . Simply enter the viewing platform from the upper area next to the Carmo Convent. Click  here  for the location on Google Maps .

Take another right turn onto Calçada do Sacramento until you reach the Carmo Convent. Once there, you can take another right turn to reach the stunning viewpoint . Before Calçada do Sacramento, there is also an alley. This will also take you to the top of the Santa Justa Lift, but by stairs.

You might also like to stop at the terrace to order a  pastel de bacalhau  and a drink. The codfish cake is filled with  Queijo da Serra DOP  from Serra da Estrela! This is  the highest mountain range  in mainland Portugal and adds to the  authentic flavour . It goes very well with a refreshing glass of  Port Wine .

Carmo Convent

In both downtown Lisbon and Bairro Alto, there are many more spots to see . A famous tourist attraction, for example, is the Arco da Rua Augusta . Did you know you can climb to the top? Rua Augusta is the main shopping street, and Praça do Comércio is well worth visiting . In Bairro Alto, visiting the Bica funicular is a must. And make your way to Miradouro de Santa Catarina for a stunning sunset over the city!

What a unique public transportation system. I wish there more such elevators in the city, so this one didn’t become touristy. I look forward to seeing this elevator in person.

I’m sure this is the most touristy one of them all John! But thankfully there are many other ways to get up the hills. For free as well and no queues 😉

Thanks for sharing all the fascinating history of the lift, along with gorgeous photographs of the design. I love discovering fun things to do like this when in a new city and now I feel like I know so much more about it. Would have been cool to see it working with the steam engine power back in the day!

Lisbon is called the City of the Seven Hills, but some say there are more; we agree on one thing: climbing the hills is not easy, but at the end of each climb we are always surprised by magnificent views over the city.

The arrival of elevators in the city made it easier to go up to the higher districts, with the benefit of being able to contemplate daily life without taking your breath away, and all this aboard a vintage cabin that overflows with elegance.

At the end of the 19th century there were several elevators in the city, some of them with such long routes that they resembled the famous tramcars that we see today on rails. Of all these "lines" only three elevators and the impressive Santa Justa lift remain.

Santa Justa Lift

Opened in 1902, it is now a National Monument and one of the most visited in Lisbon. Built by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard in neo-Gothic style, it has two cabins that go up 30 meters, from rua do Ouro, to a viewpoint, from where you can see Lisbon from the Tagus, the castle hill, the downtown, and even the top of the Eduardo VII’s park.

The upper platform also has a pedestrian connection to the Largo do Carmo where we find the grandiose Carmo Convent, from the 14th century/early 15th century in Gothic style. Its pointed arches no longer support the ceiling, which was destroyed after the 1755 earthquake. And right next door, the Carmo military headquarters of the general command of GNR, where Marcelo Caetano, Council President of the New State, took refuge and was arrested, marking the 25th of April Revolution and putting an end to the dictatorship that ruled Portugal since 1926.

The Santa Justa lift has 2 cabins that still work with its original mechanism and, among several curiosities, has a parachute system that has never been used. The iron and wooden lacework and the Gothic staircases give charm to this tower, where everyone wants to climb to discover the city's charms - and while you're at it, why not? - And why not make a trip to Largo do Carmo to taste the famous ginjinha liquor that can be found all over the city in its oldest cafes.

Bica elevator

It’s the postcards’ favorite of Lisbon, for the views over the river, among the flowery buildings with wrought iron balconies. Also by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, it opened in 1892. It is also the two smallest elevator cabins in the city, which gives it a charming look. Originally, and like the other elevators, it worked by water counterweight, that is: when the upper cabin's tank filled up with water, the weight increased and made it go down to the lower level, simultaneously raising the lower cabin to the upper level, which was lighter because it had an empty tank. There was also a phase of steam locomotion, until the final transition to electric power. Nowadays, when one of the cabins is ready to move, a lamp lights in the other cabin to warn the driver, who prepares to start moving as well. The cabins meet halfway, and since they don’t move fast, there are passengers who even have time to chat a bit with their neighbors who walk by, side by side, on the sidewalk. At the São Paulo street terminal we find the beautiful Art Nouveau style entrance with tile-lined interior, and at the Calhariz street terminal, we find the funicular's operating machinery underground. In 2010, the artist Alexandre Farto (worldwide famous as Vhils, for his artistic interventions in urban buildings), as part of the Carris project "Art in Movement" (part of a program to support Portuguese Contemporary Art) made the coating of reflective metal film in the cabin of this elevator - and later, in 2013, a coating was made with a pattern illustrating the Portuguese cobblestone sidewalk.

Glória Elevator

From the top of the pleasant viewpoint of São Pedro de Alcântara, there is a cabin of the Glória elevator, ready to take us from the Bairro Alto area to the Avenida da Liberdade, more precisely to the Praça dos Restauradores, next to the Hard Rock Café. This elevator does not go straight up and down, it also curves and has an inclination of about 17%, so the trip becomes more impressive, but nothing to scare the most sensitive ones. It was opened in 1885, and initially had an Art Nouveau style terminal in the lower area (Avenida da Liberdade) which was later removed. The route along the Calçada da Glória is 265 meters long, and again among the curiosities that take part of these means of transportation, until the late nineteenth century, the cabins were illuminated by candles, during the night service.

The hill it climbs: São Roque

tour santa justa

Lavra Elevator

Inaugurated in 1884, it is the oldest elevator in the city. It goes from Largo da Anunciada to Rua Câmara Pestana, and has an average inclination greater than the Glória elevator: 22.9%. It is discovered especially when you walk along Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, known for its many restaurants serving Portuguese cuisine, as well as for famous concert halls such as the Coliseu or the Politeama. It is, of all, the least popular elevator among visitors - and even among the city's inhabitants! - since it does not give access to any point identified as being of tourist interest. But for those with an explorer's soul, it is a unique part of the city, and there is also a viewpoint nearby that shows the city from a different perspective.

Why take a ride in the Santa Justa Lift in Lisbon?

Is the santa justa lift worth it.

Yes, it is worth it, if you can avoid the crowded moments. The Lisbon elevator is one of the best attractions in the city  for a couple of reasons:

  • for the surprising architecture as it was designed by Raoul Mesnier, a student of Gustave Eiffel (the architect of the Eiffel tower…). You recognize the metal work.
  • for the practicality as it avoids climbing one more hill, in this hilly city
  • for the views at from the viewing platform – you can most of the main monuments in all directions including the castle and the National Theater

Planning tips – Santa Justa Lift, Lisbon, Portugal

How to get to the santa justa lift.

  • In the heart of historical Lisbon
  • It connects the lower neighborhood of Baixa with the higher area of Bairro Alto
  • The bottom entrance at Rua Santa Justa
  • The top entrance is near the  Carmo Convent , at the end of Tv. Dom Pedro de Menezes
  • Better to explore around on foot

Riding the Lisbon Elevator

  • Santa Justa Lift price: 5.30€ including lift both ways and access to viewing platform
  • Included in the one-day metro ticket, Lisbon card and the Yellow hop on hop off busses – however note that some of the tickets don’t include the viewing platform entrance, just the lift, which is not the best part
  • Lisbon elevator opening hours: 7am to 9pm – or to 11pm in Summer
  • The viewing platform is accessed via a narrow staircase (photos in the article)

Rua do Carmo

How to avoid the crowds at Elevador de Santa Justa

The queues are really long in Summer, so, I recommend  going early! There can only be 29 visitors on the viewing platform and in the lift. So lines, can be very long…

Avoid the peak hours from 10 am to 3pm. Visit as early or late as you can

Option 2 – cheaper or free

Admire the structure from the bottom street. Climb the hill on foot, it takes 5 to 10min (walk up the steps behind the lift and turn left onto Rua do Carmo, then right on Rua Garett and right on Calçada do Sacramento towards the Carmo convent). Just before the convent, take the path down to the right towards the top of the lift. Access the bridge is free and already very nice. And if you want more, you can pay just 1.50 euros to get to the viewing platform (see pictures later).

Option 3 – ride the lift down

There are always longer queues riding up rather than riding down.

The Lisbon Elevator from the bottom entrance

The elevator can be reached from the top or the bottom. The bottom access is in the heart of Lisbon. I missed it on my way from the sea. I don’t know how I missed it…. It is quite a structure!

Anyway, I turned around and spotted it between the buildings.

As you approach the entrance, you can see the details in the iron structure:

Note: Other transportations are called elevators in Lisbon: Elevador da Gloria and Elevador da Bica. But they are funiculars. Whereas Santa Justa is vertical. But they all help with the steep hills of Lisbon!

Santa Justa Lift history & facts

Before I show you photos of the amazing views, below are a few facts for those interested:

What I loved most compared to the other viewpoints in Lisbon is that you are in the center and just above the roofs. So, you can get a better feel for the architecture of the buildings.

And you get great views of the street decorations:

Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento Lisbonne
