Travel Guide

Moscow's opulence and high culture is a sight to be seen. Forget what you learned about Russia in grade school. This lavish capital of a formerly communist nation has fully embraced the luxuries, excesses and decadence of Western capitalism. Like many former Soviet countries, Mother Russia struggles to successfully confront issues of widespread poverty, alcoholism, failing healthcare, and environmental protection. But Moscow has burgeoned into one of the most expensive, exclusive and largest travel destinations in the world. It comes complete with world-class museums, magnificent palaces, $1,000-a-night hotels, "face-control" nightclubs and internationally-renowned restaurants. Don't think you can afford Moscow? Don't be afraid. You can still find affordable deals if you are vigilant. This metropolis has a big and bold character and grandiose setting that's definitely worth getting to know.

What Is the Relationship Between Hotel and Tourism?

By Alice Nichols

When we think of tourism, one of the first things that comes to mind is hotels. Hotels are an integral part of the tourism industry, and the relationship between hotels and tourism is complex and multifaceted. In this article, we will explore the relationship between hotels and tourism and how they are interconnected.

What are hotels? Hotels are establishments that provide lodging facilities to travelers for a short period. They are typically a place where tourists can rest, relax and rejuvenate after a long day of exploring new places. Hotels can vary in size, cost, amenities offered, and type of clientele they cater to.

What is Tourism? Tourism refers to the activities that people engage in when they travel away from their homes for leisure or business purposes. It includes visiting new places, experiencing different cultures, trying out local cuisines, participating in outdoor activities such as hiking or biking, among others.

The Relationship Between Hotels and Tourism Hotels are an essential component of the tourism industry since they provide lodging facilities to tourists who travel for various reasons. Whether it’s for leisure or business purposes, tourists need a place to stay overnight or for several days. In this way, hotels play a crucial role in facilitating tourism by providing accommodation options that meet the needs and preferences of different types of travelers.

Hotels also contribute significantly to local economies by creating employment opportunities for people working in various positions such as housekeeping staff, front desk clerks, chefs, security personnel among others. They also generate revenue through taxes paid to local authorities.

Moreover, hotels play a vital role in promoting tourism by offering various amenities such as restaurants serving local cuisine; spa facilities offering relaxation treatments; fitness centers offering workout options; conference rooms for conducting business meetings; among others. These amenities make tourists’ stay more comfortable and enjoyable while also promoting local businesses.

The Types of Hotels There are several types of hotels catering to different types of travelers. These include:

1. Luxury Hotels These are high-end hotels that cater to affluent travelers who seek luxurious amenities and services such as spas, fine dining restaurants, butlers, and personal concierge services.

2. Business Hotels These hotels cater to business travelers and offer amenities such as conference rooms, Wi-Fi connectivity, printing services, among others.

3. Budget Hotels Also known as economy hotels, these provide basic lodging facilities at an affordable cost. They are ideal for budget-conscious tourists who want to save on accommodation costs while still enjoying their travels.

The Future of Hotels and Tourism The hotel industry is continually evolving to meet the changing needs and preferences of tourists. In recent years, there has been an increase in eco-friendly hotels that focus on sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint. There has also been a rise in technology-driven hotels that incorporate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to provide personalized experiences to guests.

New Climate Tax For Tourists In Greece In 2024

A new climate tax has been introduced in Greece as of January 2024. Here is more information about this new tourist tax, which will affect all types of accommodation.

tourist in the hotel

Greece – New tourist tax for climate 2024

As of January 2024, a Climate Crisis Resilience Tax has been introduced in Greece.

All visitors staying in hotels, villas, apartments or rooms anywhere in Greece will have to pay this tax. The amount of tax will range from 1.50 euro to 10 euros per night stayed at the accommodation.

The exact amount of Greek climate crisis resilience tax for each business will depend on the type of accommodation, and the month. Here is a summary:

New tourist climate tax in Greece

For example, visitors staying in villas or 5-star hotels during the tourist season (March to October) will pay 10 euro per night. Visitors staying in simple rooms, hotels and AirBnBs, will pay 1.50 euros per night per room.

During winter (November to February), which is the low season for Greece, the tourist tax is reduced.

If you have a look at Booking.com , you will find that many hotels have already incorporated the climate tax in the total cost of the accommodation. Regardless, businesses will need to issue a separate receipt for the new tourist tax.

Financing resilience efforts against climate change

The climate tax will replace the old hotel tax, which ranged from 0.50 to 4 euro per night. The new measure will bring significant revenue to the Greek State, estimated to no less than 300 million euros within 2024.

The government aims to use this revenue to finance resilience efforts against climate change. Part of the funds will be used towards reconstruction after natural disasters, like the 2023 wildfires in Rhodes or the unprecedented floods in Thessaly.

Although some industry professionals worry that the new tax might discourage tourists, Greece expects a record number of visitors in 2024. In the last couple of years, the numbers of people visiting Greece outside the summer season has been steadily increasing.

Have a look at this article on the best time to visit the Greek islands – no, it’s not August!

As we are staying with and as guests of Greek family, am I correct in thinking we wont have to pay?

If you are non-paying guests, I guess that you won’t have to pay the tax, but it’s best to clarify it with the family. Enjoy your stay!

I like Greece, in Zante now, paid 90 euro tax well sorry won’t be coming back, also notice how expensive everything is sunbeds 20 euro, government has got greedy treating people as a money pit. long haul holidays for me, I feel sorry for the people.

Booked our holiday before January in a 5* hotel in Kos, 2 rooms for 6 people Wasn’t expecting the tourist tax to go up 2.5 times We won’t be visiting Greece again unfortunately as this take the holiday from affordable to expensive

Real madness created by greedy governments. I am sorry for the local communities because they are really wonderful in Greece, and the travelers would consider different directions.

I couldn’t agree more… The best solution is to choose budget accommodation where the tax is minimal.

why did TUi not warn me about climate resilience tax before i booked a holiday to Kefalonia.

I would take it up with TUI…

Sorry, but is this Tax per night per room, or Per Person??

The Six Biggest Mistakes Hotel Guests Always Make, According To Hotel Staff

These are some mistakes you’re probably making when staying at a hotel.

Casey Clark

HuffPost Writer

Two people check into a hotel, smiling and handing over documents at the reception desk. A receptionist assists them

Picture this: You’ve just checked in to your hotel room, whether that’s for a weekend business conference or a week-long vacation. You likely greeted the front desk employee, showed your ID, put down a card for incidentals and headed to your accommodations after a long day of travel.

If that sounds familiar, you’re probably like most guests and don’t give much thought to your overall stay beyond the basics. That said, there are some mistakes you’re probably making when staying at a hotel.

We spoke to front desk employees and managers at hotels across the United States and internationally to see what errors guests often make. Here’s what you may want to do differently on your next hotel stay:

Not booking directly through the hotel.

Hand holding a smartphone displaying a hotel booking screen with room options and prices in a modern, cozy lounge or cafe setting

It can be enticing to book through third-party travel websites to save money. However, there are a few downsides.

“Booking through third parties takes away more than half of the actions we can do to assist you,” said Chase Christian, director of rooms at 106 Jefferson in Huntsville, Alabama. “Often, we aren’t able to refund a night’s stay if your trip was unexpectedly canceled, you may not receive your loyalty benefits, or the third party charges late fees for last-minute changes.”

These issues are all usually avoidable when booking directly through the property.

To help put it into perspective, here’s how Rhiannon Reynolds, vice president of operations at Innisfree Hotels , explained it: “If a front desk agent has one king view room left and has two guests standing there waiting for their room, one of whom is a loyal hotel brand rewards member who booked direct and the other who booked through Expedia costing the hotel a high commission ... who do you think has a better chance of getting the king view room that they booked?”

Not doing research ahead of your stay.

According to Ivanna Gonzalez, director of rooms at Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel in Miami, many guests don’t inquire about the amenities and services available to them until after their stay is over.

“We frequently hear from guests about items they wished they had known were provided, whether it’s extra pillows or even recommendations for local attractions,” Gonzales said.

Rachel Mylett, assistant rooms division manager at The Lodge at St. Edward in Kenmore, Washington, said that her property offers amenities that a typical guest wouldn’t think of without browsing their website.

“Pickleball courts and weekly meetups, game nights, specialty happy hours, self-guided historic tours, and free yoga on Saturdays are some offerings guests may miss if they don’t do the research ahead of time,” Mylett said.

Not asking for hygiene products.

A couple checks in at a hotel reception desk, assisted by a receptionist. The setting is modern with a cozy seating area and flowers in the background

If you were scatterbrained while packing, you could have easily forgotten to pack a toothbrush and toothpaste. Sound familiar? Well, at many hotels, you don’t have to go through the night (or day) with smelly breath.

“During my time at the front desk, a guest checking out mentioned he urgently needed to find a convenience store because he had forgotten his toothbrush and hadn’t brushed his teeth in four days,” said Patrick van den Aakster, front office manager at Corendon Amsterdam New-West  in the Netherlands. “I informed him that we actually provide complimentary toothbrushes at the front desk. He was surprised and admitted he hadn’t thought to ask.”

Not every hotel will offer this, but many will have dental kits, combs, and makeup wipes available for guests if they ask.

Not booking spa or dining reservations ahead of time.

Book your spa and dining reservations right after you book your hotel room to ensure you have a spot before you arrive.

“Popular hotels near larger cities often book out well in advance, especially when they are available to both guests and locals,” Mylett said. ”We hate it when our guests can’t enjoy all the on-property services and amenities they might have expected to have access to upon arrival.”

Not asking about flexible check-in and check-out times.

A door with a "Please Do Not Disturb" sign hanging on the handle, commonly seen in hotels to indicate a guest's desire for privacy

Many hotels have standard check-in and check-out times. That said, there usually is some flexibility if you ask ahead of time if your flight is getting in early or you need an extra hour to get ready in the morning.

“If you need to adjust your check-in or check-out times, let the hotel know before you arrive,” Gonzalez said. “Hotels often have flexibility with these requests, especially if they’re aware in advance.”

Not reaching out with concerns and requests.

A receptionist speaks on the phone while writing down notes at a hotel front desk, ready to assist guests

Hotel workers want to make sure you have a pleasant stay at their property, but they won’t know how they can make it better if you don’t tell them.

“Don’t be shy. Reply to emails and texts to ensure your stay is everything you want it to be,” Mylett said. “This includes letting us know if you are celebrating a special occasion ― perhaps our team can help make it even more special.” This article originally appeared on HuffPost.

Sources of Saudi Tourism: Who’s Traveling, Who’s Spending?

Josh Corder

Josh Corder , Skift

September 11th, 2024 at 12:42 PM EDT

We all read about Saudi Arabia's ambitious giga-projects and want for international tourists, but for now, business is still coming from more traditional sources.

Josh Corder

  • What are the main drivers behind the surge in domestic tourism in Saudi Arabia?
  • What are the financial contributions of international tourists compared to domestic tourists in Saudi Arabia?
  • What are the projected targets for foreign tourists in Saudi Arabia by 2030?

Select a question above or ask something else

  • Saudi Arabia reported 109 million visitors in 2023, exceeding its initial 2030 target.
  • Domestic tourists make up the majority of visitors, while international tourists account for higher spending.
  • Saudi Arabia aims for 70 million foreign tourists by 2030, supported by 'giga-projects' like Neom and The Red Sea.

Saudi Arabia has seen a significant increase in both domestic and international tourism, with 109 million visitors in 2023, surpassing their 2030 target. The majority of visitors are domestic tourists, while international tourists contribute more to spending. The country aims to attract 70 million foreign tourists by 2030, facilitated by large-scale projects like Neom and The Red Sea, which cater to Western tastes. Saudi Arabia's tourism sector's contribution to GDP was 11.5% in 2023 and is expected to rise to 16% by 2034.

Saudis are exploring their own country in bigger numbers and foreigners are bringing the cash. That’s the takeaway from a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the state of the Saudi economy.

“The surge of visitors has been mostly domestic-driven while the surge in visitors’ spending was mostly inbound-driven (i.e., international arrivals),” said the IMF report.

Saudi reported 109 million visitors in 2023, beating its initial target of 100 million visitors by 2030 – a goal it has since lifted to 150 million.

Domestic tourists accounted for 74.9% of visits last year, or 81.9 million people. The Saudi government doesn’t share how they measure a domestic tourist, but Skift has been told by the Saudi Tourism Authority it partly involves tracking mobile phone signals to see when people cross land borders in the country.

International tourists spent 141.2 billion Saudi Riyals (about $37.6 billion) last year compared to 114.4 billion Saudi Riyals (about $30.5 billion) by domestic travelers.

By 2030, the goal is for 70 million foreign tourists. ‘Giga-projects’ such as Neom and The Red Sea are being built with Western tastes in mind, with a string of luxury hotels and restaurants. However, the projects themselves are unlikely to make a big contribution to overall visitor targets due to the small size of the hotels.

The estimates of the World Travel & Tourism Council indicate that Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector’s overall (direct and indirect) contribution to GDP reached 11.5% in 2023 — and is expected to increase to 16% by 2034.

There was a substantial increase in tourism spending post-Covid, which was primarily driven by international travelers visiting friends and relatives — while Saudi nationals’ leisure spending abroad experienced a significant decline of 51% from 2019 to 2023.

tourist in the hotel

For international travelers, religious tourism is still the main purpose of a visit, accounting for 11.46 million of the 27.42 international visits last year. Visiting friends and family was almost tied with leisure at 6.2 and 6.25 million visitors, respectively.

For domestic tourists last year, leisure was the main purpose of travel for 35 million people.
