Newark Liberty International Airport

If you've never been to New York City, you might think that flying into a different state is unnecessarily far. But Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), located in New Jersey, is just a stone's throw away from Manhattan across the Hudson River, and there are multiple travel options including trains, busses, cars, and shuttles. You can reach most parts of the city just as quickly—if not faster—than if you were coming from JFK Airport or LaGuardia Airport .

Newark Airport is 18 miles from Midtown Manhattan, and taking a taxi into the city from New Jersey is can be more expensive than taking a taxi from JFK or LaGuardia airports. Many travelers find the most convenient option to be taking the train directly from the airport to Moynihan (Penn) Station in New York, which is affordable and takes less than 40 minutes. Airport buses and shuttles are also an option for getting into the city with more destination options.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Newark Airport to Manhattan?

Trains operated by NJ Transit from Newark Airport to Manhattan are the cheapest method for getting into New York. These trains run frequently, are quick, and in many ways are even more convenient than taking public transportation from JFK or LaGuardia airports. First, take the AirTrain directly from the terminal to the nearby Newark Airport train station (about 10 minutes). From there, catch a NJ Transit train to Moynihan (Penn) Station in New York City, a journey that takes 30 minutes.

You only need one ticket to ride both trains, and you can purchase them at NJ Transit ticket machines in the terminal or through the NJ Transit app. The price to New York Penn Station (Moynihan) is $16 for an adult, but the train also makes a stop at Newark Penn Station. Don't get out here if you're going to Manhattan. Double-check before completing your purchase to make sure you've selected the correct Penn Station, or you may get fined for traveling with an invalid ticket.

Once you get to Penn Station, you can use the 1,2,3, A, C, or E lines of the subway to continue on to your final destination or hail a cab from the station.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Newark Airport to Manhattan?

The fastest method can vary depending on what part of the city you're going to and what time of day you're commuting. During rush hour, driving or a taking taxi will generally be the slowest method. Renting a car is not a good idea for a trip to New York City, since you won't use a car in the city and you'll end up paying a ton just to leave it in a parking garage.

From the airport, you can hail a New Jersey cab, call an Uber or Lyft, or hire a private car service to pick you up. The benefit is that you can sit back and relax in the car while a driver takes you directly to the front door of your hotel or accommodations. However, rush hour traffic can seriously delay your arrival.

Using a taxi service is by far the most expensive option as well. Taxis are metered and a ride to downtown Manhattan will cost you at least $65, with journeys getting more expensive as you travel further uptown. Passengers are also responsible for paying bridge tolls, a rush-hour and weekend surcharge, and a credit card fee, all of which can drastically bump up the price of a regular taxi. Don't forget to add on an additional 10 percent to 20 percent of the fare for the customary tip . Uber and Lyft tend to be cheaper, around $75 all-in.

Is There a Bus That Goes From Newark Airport to Manhattan?

The Newark Airport Express is a coach bus that picks up from each terminal at the airport and drops off passengers at Port Authority Bus Terminal (Times Square), Bryant Park, or Grand Central Terminal. It cost only a few dollars more than taking the train, but the multiple stops may be a more convenient option if you need to travel around Manhattan after arriving. Between the three drop-off points of the Express Bus, you can catch the subway to virtually any part of the city.

The one-way fare for an adult is $18.70, but you can save money by purchasing a roundtrip ticket ($33) if you'll be flying out of Newark as well. Other discounts are also available for seniors, youth, and disabled passengers.

Are There Shuttles From Newark Airport to Manhattan?

Ride-sharing vans are a great option for travelers who want the convenience of a door-to-door ride but without the exorbitant cost of a taxi. These shuttles are especially convenient for solo travelers since they can cost half the price of using a cab or other private car service. Several companies offer shuttle services, such as Airlink NYC . Airlink NYC rides are about $32 per passenger for a seat in a shared van, depending on your departure time, destination, and number of passengers. The perk of using this service is that you can get dropped off right at the front door of your accommodations, but it's difficult to gauge your travel time. If you're the first person in the car to be dropped off it can be as fast as taking a taxi. But if you're the last person to be dropped off, it will have been faster to take the train.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Manhattan?

Weekday mornings and early evenings are when hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents are commuting into/out of the city, so if taking a cab during this time, expect congested roads and long delays. Since taxis are metered from the airport, you'll pay more if your car gets stuck in heavy traffic. You'll also pay a surcharge on all taxi rides from New Jersey into New York City on weekdays 6-10 a.m. and 3-8 p.m, and weekends from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Congestion pricing can add $15, depending on where you're going.

Trains are likely to be extra packed during weekday rush hour as well, but they also run more frequently. There is no train service between the hours of 1:30 a.m. and 4:50 a.m., so be sure to plan ahead if you have a late-night arrival.

What's the Most Scenic Route to Manhattan?

It must be said that driving yourself from Newark Airport to Manhattan really isn't a good idea: it's expensive and time-consuming. You also won't get much of a view if you take the Lincoln Tunnel or Holland Tunnel into the city. The George Washington Bridge connects to Washington Heights up near the Bronx; if you're staying uptown, this is how you'll get to Manhattan, and you'll get a great view of the skyline on your way in.

What Is There to Do in New York City?

Even if you've never been to New York City , everyone knows it from movies , literature , music , and other pop culture . You could spend a year living in New York and you still wouldn't be able to see all that it has to offer. If it's your first time visiting, then there are a few must-see sites that everyone has to experience, and most of New York's iconic sites are located in Manhattan. Around Midtown, you have Times Square , Rockefeller Center , and Grand Central Terminal. Just a few blocks uptown is the enormous Central Park, and a few blocks downtown the legendary Empire State Building dominates. Many of Manhattan's most charming neighborhoods are below 14th Street, such as Greenwich Village , Soho , and Washington Square Park . Walk around and get lost in the endless display of designer boutiques, hip cafes, and amazing restaurants. And that's just a small taste of Manhattan—there are four other boroughs that make up New York City and each one offers something uniquely special.

You're in Manhattan, and you need to catch a plane from Newark Airport (officially known as Newark-Liberty International Airport or EWR) in New Jersey. There are many ways to make this commute, although some are more convenient than others. The train from Penn Station is a cheap and easy option, although it may take a while to navigate the journey's various legs. The Newark Airport Express bus is more expensive, but it provides a convenient one-leg journey to the airport from various stops throughout Manhattan. The #62 bus is cheap, but it might take a while. You can also drive or catch a cab through the Lincoln Tunnel but be wary of traffic!

Taking the Newark Airport Express

Step 1 Board the Newark Airport Express across the Hudson.

  • A one-way ticket costs $16. The round-trip is $24. Children under 5 ride free. Check the website for other discounts.

Step 2 Choose the nearest stop.

  • If you're staying at a hotel in midtown, then you can book a hotel shuttle for an additional $4 fee. Call the express line for details. [1] X Research source

Step 3 Get off at Newark Airport.

Taking a Train

Step 1 Make your way to Penn Station.

  • Take a subway or bus transit to Penn Station. There's no way you can miss getting there from Manhattan between Penn Station's many subway lines and few bus lines. The A, C, E, and 1, 2, and 3 subway trains will get you directly to Penn Station. Find a bus or subway map on the MTA website for more information. [3] X Research source .
  • If you don't feel like navigating the system, you can always take a taxi or an Uber to the station.
  • Walk to Penn Station. If you're already nearby, you can walk to the train station. The official address is 234 West 31st Street, Pennsylvania Station-8 Av & W 31 St, New York, NY 10001. You can also find it on Eighth Avenue, between 31st and 34th streets. Find directions using a map app if you aren't sure.
  • On the side facing Seventh Avenue, you will see a big sign that says, "Madison Square Garden." Enter the station here, but for Amtrak, enter the station on Eighth Avenue.

Step 2 Pick the appropriate line.

  • Some Amtrak Northeast Corridor tickets stop at the Newark Airport center. In contrast, others arrive at the Newark station, which is a good car-ride away and will still cost a pretty penny if you plan on taking a taxi from one location to the other.

Step 3 Buy a ticket.

  • One way to find the NJ Transit area is to take the escalator down from the station's MSG side, then veer left.

Step 4 Board the train.

  • Double-check that the train stops at Newark Airport. As you board the train, there will be a screen on the wall before you head down the stairs: it lists all of the stops that the train will take.
  • The train will usually stop at Secaucus and then Newark Penn Station before your stop. [5] X Research source Do not make the mistake of getting off at Newark Penn Station instead of Newark Liberty Airport.

Step 5 Cross over the bridge to the AirTrain Newark station.

  • Don't bother calling a cab. You'll need to wait around for more than a few minutes. Furthermore, the mess of one-way streets can be confusing to navigate to the airport via the train station.

Step 6 Get out at the proper terminal.

Catching the #62 Bus

Step 1 Try the #62 bus.

Driving to the Airport

Step 1 Consider driving if you have a car.

  • Call a cab or an Uber, but only if you must. In most cases, this will be much more expensive than public transportation.

Step 2 Enter New Jersey through the Lincoln Tunnel.

  • Be aware that some taxis will not take you across state lines.

Community Q&A

Community Answer

  • No train that runs out of Grand Central will ever bring you south of Grand Central Station in New York City (Manhattan borough). Metro-North trains only run in New York state since the MTA of New York State owns them; therefore, these railroad tracks never run towards Newark Airport from any point south of Grand Central Terminal. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Don't walk from the airport's train station to the airport. The highways nearby are busy with other commuters, and there will be a risk you will need to take (of getting run over) had you done so). The walk from the train station to the airport is quite long and littered with many trees blocking a clear view of the airport. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is located in Newark, New Jersey, just a few miles away from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

While the airport isn’t technically located in New York, it is 1 of the 3 major New York City airports, in addition to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Many flyers use Newark to access New York City, so you’re probably curious how you can get from the airport to the city and back.

You’re in luck, as this guide will show you all the possible ways to do just that — let’s get started!

New York City is served primarily by 3 airports. As you’d expect, they vary in distance from Manhattan, and each has its challenges regarding transit .

Here’s a look at the distance and the available transportation methods from each major NYC airport to New York Penn Station , a pivotal transit hub and a central location in Midtown Manhattan:

  • New York-LaGuardia (LGA) is 9.1 miles from Penn Station, making it the closest airport to Manhattan . The easiest method for getting from the airport to the city is by taxi or ride-share. You can also take the free LaGuardia Link Q70 bus service to the subway in Queens and take the subway into Manhattan.
  • New York-Kennedy (JFK) is 16.8 miles away from Penn Station. The easiest way to get from the airport to the city is to take the AirTrain to the Long Island Railroad (LIRR).
  • Newark (EWR) is 16.3 miles away from Penn Station. The easiest way to get from the airport to the city is to take a NJ TRANSIT train.

Today, however, we’re focusing on Newark Airport in New Jersey — here’s a look at the available transport methods between Manhattan and Newark Airport.

Are you considering flying from JFK instead? Check out our guide on how to get from JFK to Manhattan .

If you’re traveling by train, you’ll first need to take the AirTrain from the terminal buildings to the airport train station, a short ride away. These trains operate 24/7, 365 days a year , and run every few minutes, with fewer trains departing during the overnight hours.

Whether traveling on a NJ TRANSIT train or an Amtrak train, the AirTrain fee will be included in your ticket — no additional purchase is necessary.

NJ TRANSIT trains are the fastest and easiest way from Newark Airport to Manhattan . It takes roughly 30 minutes to travel on NJ TRANSIT to New York Penn Station. Rides usually include only a few stops along the route, one of which will always be Newark Penn Station.

A one-way adult fare is $15.75; children, seniors, and military members will pay $11.75. You can purchase a NJ TRANSIT ticket at the airport or the train station, and you’ll find trains departing for New York City approximately every 15 to 30 minutes , depending on the time of day.

Once onboard, you can sit anywhere, and a conductor will come around to collect your ticket.

On arrival at Penn Station, you can access New York’s MTA subway or bus system. Many sights and hotels are within walking distance from the station as well. NJ TRANSIT trains arrive at the “old” Penn Station (not the new Moynihan Train Hall).

Amtrak Ticketing Office Moynihan Train Hall

Amtrak trains run on the same tracks as NJ TRANSIT trains, so you’ll need to take the AirTrain to the airport train station and follow the signs you see for NJ TRANSIT.

Amtrak doesn’t operate trains as frequently as NJ TRANSIT does between Newark Airport and New York Penn Station, but about 8 to 10 trains a day cover the short distance. It’s worth noting that many trains stop at Newark Penn Station on their way to New York but do not stop at the airport.

Fares start at $5 (if you purchase far in advance) and can go north of $75 , even for the short trip, so it’s only worth it to take an Amtrak train if you can secure a cheap ticket in advance. As the ride’s only about 25 minutes long, you won’t be able to take advantage of many amenities on board, like the Café Car.

Note that your Amtrak ticket is also only valid for a specific train. If you miss that train due to a delayed flight, for example, you’ll need to purchase a new ticket for a later train , which will come at an additional cost. On the other hand, NJ TRANSIT tickets allow you to board any NJ TRANSIT train — you’re not tied to a specific departure time.

You can purchase business class tickets on all Amtrak trains, which typically come at about a $20 premium over coach. The significant upside to purchasing business class is having an assigned seat and a refundable ticket .

There’s no question that trains are the best way into Manhattan from Newark. Not only do you avoid the traffic, but the fares are fixed, and you’re brought right to Penn Station, a central location in Midtown Manhattan.

You can grab a taxi on the same level as baggage claim. When you pick up your bags, head out to the curb to one of the many taxi ranks you’ll find.

Heading into Manhattan, there is no fixed fare, so the cost will depend entirely on traffic and other route conditions. You can expect to pay approximately $65 for the trip , though this number can vary wildly depending on the time of day. Tipping is customary, so expect to add this to your total.

Taxis between New York City and JFK Airport adhere to fixed fares, while taxis to Newark Airport do not.

To take a ride-share service into the city, follow the signs for ground transportation and passenger pickup, where you’ll see a designated ride-share lane for pickup.

Rides into the city vary depending on traffic conditions and availability of cars, but expect to pay at least $45 for the one-way ride in the most perfect of conditions. Ride-share vehicles are almost always available, though there could be surge pricing depending on demand at the time of your request.

Carmel Super Saver , Airlink New York , and ETS Air Shuttle operate between Newark Airport and Manhattan. You have your pick of vehicles and can choose between shared vans, private vans, limousines, and even buses.

Costs for a van service tend to be fixed , so you don’t have to worry about traffic conditions. When you book, you request the destination you want to go to so you can get dropped off right in front of your hotel, which is very convenient if you have baggage.

Here are some typical prices from Newark Airport to New York Penn Station:

  • Shared van: $33.51
  • Private economy sedan: $80
  • 10-person van: $231
  • Deluxe sedan: $120
  • 13-person van: $258
  • 28-passenger bus: $800
  • 55-passenger motorcoach: $875

You can take as many people as the vehicle can fit when using a private transport option. For example, if you hire a 10-person van and actually fill it with 10 people, that’s only about $23 per person, which is relatively cheap for a trip directly to your destination. These services are best if you have multiple people and bags and want to travel together.

If you’re traveling in a group, hiring a van or small bus can easily save you tons of money since the costs tend to be fixed.

Departing from every terminal, there is an express bus service operated by CoachUSA to 3 locations in Manhattan: Grand Central Station, Bryant Park, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Buses depart at least once per hour, sometimes more often, and only cost $18 one-way or $30 round-trip. Buses operate from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily, year-round.

Each bus accommodates around 50 passengers, and luggage storage is in the cargo compartments underneath the coach. They can get crowded, but the low price makes this method worthwhile.

BLADE Helicopter Take-Off from Manhattan

This is certainly the most stylish way to get from Newark Airport to Manhattan. You can use Blade , a helicopter transport company, to fly between Newark Airport and West 30th Street for as low as $195 per person each way.

If you’re taking the helicopter to Newark, transportation is included to take you to your terminal. However, if you’re flying to Manhattan, you must add a separate ground transportation package (or find your own way) to get you to your final street address.

The service includes lounge access in Manhattan and the luggage you will bring on board, though there are some weight limitations for obvious reasons. The transport time from Manhattan to Newark can be as little as 5 minutes , so it’s a speedy ride. While the price tag is steep, it could be worth it in extreme traffic.

Check out our first-hand experience of an NYC airport transfer with Blade .

There are numerous ways to get from Newark Airport to Manhattan. Each has a different price tag and total travel time associated with it.

If you don’t have too much luggage, NJ TRANSIT will likely be the quickest and cheapest option , though you may want to price out ride-share fares to see if you get a reasonable fare, depending on the number of people in your party.

For the ultimate splurge, a Blade helicopter ride can get you there quickly but will cost you a pretty penny. Whichever option you choose, allow plenty of time to travel between Newark Airport and Manhattan.

New York City Landscapes, Skyline, Manhattan

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Despite being located in New Jersey, Newark Airport (EWR) is actually only 16 miles from midtown Manhattan which makes it a workable option for your next trip to the Big Apple. Actually, depending on where you're staying, you actually might find Newark to be more convenient than both LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy (JFK) . Once you deplane, there are plenty of ways to make your way over the Hudson River and into the city -- but which one is the fastest option?

Here we will look at all the ways to get from Newark Airport to New York City . Your final destination in New York City and the cost will help determine the mode of transportation that works best for you and your family.

AirTrain to NJ Transit

One of the biggest considerations when traveling to or from Newark airport during a trip to Manhattan is traffic. What might otherwise be a 20-minute trip could easily take an hour when traffic is bad. When returning to Newark after your trip, you have to bake in a good buffer, or you could end up missing your flight.

Related: The fastest ways to get from JFK to Manhattan

This is where AirTrain comes into play. AirTrain is a rail line that transports passengers between all three Newark Airport terminals, parking garages, rental car facilities and Newark Liberty Airport Station. From Newark Liberty Airport Station you can take a NJ Transit train right into New York Penn Station.

travel from nyc to ewr

Although AirTrain runs 24 hours a day throughout the year, NJ Transit has no service between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. A one-way ticket from the airport to New York Penn Station is $15.25 (ages 11 and under are $3.50; children 4 and under are free).

You can purchase a ticket at any ticket kiosk before getting on the AirTrain or through the New Jersey transit app . Make sure to purchase a ticket to New York Penn Station and not Newark Penn Station. The ticket includes your AirTrain ticket and your New Jersey train ticket combined. (Note: Make sure to hold onto your ticket as you'll need to use it twice.)

The actual AirTrain ride is between seven and 11 minutes, depending on which terminal you land at, then you'll transfer to NJ Transit. The NJ Transit ride is approximately 30 minutes, with New York Penn Station being the last stop. There are no other stops in Manhattan prior to arriving at Penn Station. If your hotel is not near Penn Station, you can access many subway lines right inside the building (just follow the signs) or walk outside to grab a taxi or Uber.

AirTrain to NJ Transit to PATH

If you are staying in lower Manhattan, you might want to take a slightly different route. You'll still take AirTrain to NJ Transit, but instead of going all the way into the city, get off at the Newark Penn Station terminal. From here, take the PATH train toward Manhattan and get off at the World Trade Center stop. The total ride is approximately 40 minutes. The cost is slightly less expensive, although you'll need two separate tickets. You'll first purchase an AirTrain/NJ Transit ticket, similar to above, which will cost $10.75 one-way per adult (children between the ages of 5–11 are $1.25). Once at the PATH, you'll purchase another ticket specifically for the PATH train, which costs $2.75 per person (children 5 and under are free).

For those staying in Jersey City instead of Manhattan, you can follow these same directions, but get off the PATH train at Exchange Place -- which is the stop right before entering Manhattan. In Jersey City, you'll find two great Hyatt options: the Hyatt House Jersey City and the Hyatt Regency Jersey City.

You can also take Bus 62 from outside the terminal to Newark Penn Station and from there, take the PATH train. This is your least expensive option, as the bus is just $1.60 one-way (exact fare required) plus $2.75 for the PATH. You are limited with luggage on the bus, however, and the travel time will take longer. Alternatively, you can take an Uber/Lyft from the airport to Newark Penn Station. The cost is slightly more expensive, but will get you there significantly quicker.

Express bus service

Newark Airport Express bus is also an economical mode of transportation, especially if you are traveling by yourself -- but you'll be at the mercy of traffic. Buses run 365 days a year and depart Newark Airport between the hours of 4 a.m. and 1 a.m. Depending on the time of the day, a new bus is supposed to depart every 15 to 30 minutes. Although traffic can significantly delay the bus. The round-trip fare is $30 (or $17 one-way) for an adult. There are discounted fares for children, seniors and military.

Once in Manhattan, you have your choice of three different stops: Port Authority, Bryant Park and Grand Central Station. From either of those three stops, you can take a subway to your final destination.

If you are traveling during an off-peak time and are staying near one of those three locations, this could be a great, inexpensive and relatively fast way to get into the city. A one-way trip typically takes anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes.

Taxi or app-based ride-hailing service

Getting a taxi or ride-sharing car into the city is probably your quickest and easiest option if you are traveling during off-peak times. This is also a better option if public transportation won't take you close to your final destination (such as the Upper East Side or Upper West Side). You also won't have to worry about carrying luggage through train terminals and you'll be dropped off right at your final destination. Of course, you'll be paying a higher fee for the convenience.

Related: The best credit cards for Uber and Lyft

Taxis are metered and you'll also be on the hook for tolls and hit with an airport surcharge. With everything added on, plus a tip, you can easily be looking at a $70+ charge one-way, depending on where you are headed. If you have a decent-size group or a lot of luggage, you can opt for a taxi van at no additional cost.

Uber , Lyft and Via are also an option and will allow you to request a ride right from the jet bridge. When we compared pricing at the same exact time to get from Newark Airport to Grand Central in New York City, we found that Lyft was the cheapest option at around $45 (If you were traveling solo and opted for the shared service option, you could be down to just $33). You'll be required to pay any tolls on top of the base price.

NEW YORK, NY - JULY 30: A Lyft ride hailing vehicle moves through traffic in Manhattan on July 30, 2018 in New York City. After a significant increase in local traffic and a spate of suicides by taxi drivers, New York City is planning to vote on capping ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft. The City Council's move to vote on the measures could come as soon as Aug. 8. If the vote was to succeed, New York City would become the first major U.S. municipality to cap ride-sharing services. Car service

If you want a ride waiting for you right when you walk outside of the airport, a car service is the way to go. Surprisingly, this is not your most expensive option and is comparable to the cost of an Uber/Lyft/Via. It's also a fixed rate without any surprises at the end of your trip. With this option, however, you'll need to make advance reservations. I recommend booking the trip at least 48 hours ahead of time.

Dial7 and Carmel Limo are two reputable car service companies. Carmel Limo is typically a few dollars less expensive, with rates starting at $46 one-way from Newark to Manhattan (plus tip). Depending on the time of day, your desired car and your destination within Manhattan, your rate might increase. Carmel Limo also partners with many loyalty programs, so you can earn Delta , American , Alaska , El Al , United and Hawaiian miles for every ride you take, or opt to earn points in Carmel Limo's own loyalty program .

Again, car service providers will add on any tolls and airport fees incurred.

Shared shuttle

If you are traveling by yourself, or possibly with just one another person, you might find Go Airlink NYC a convenient option. This shuttle service will pick you up at the terminal and take you to your final destination within New York City. This is a shared shuttle service though, so do not be surprised if you make additional stops along the way once in the city. This could potentially add a significant amount of time onto your ride. Pricing is $22 per person per day (children under 3 are free). Promo code SHUTTLE will get you 5% off.

This option is not cost-effective if you are traveling with more than two passengers. At that point, you are probably likely better off hiring a car service or taking an Uber/Lyft/Via.

(Photo courtesy of GoAirlink Shuttle NYC)

Bottom line

With many transportation options into the city from Newark Airport, you are bound to find an option that works best for your family. Many might like the inexpensive and consistent option of the train, while others would prefer a car to take them to the front door of their hotel or AirBnB . Ultimately, the time of day and your final destination will play a big part in which turns out to be the fastest and best option for you.

The Best Options for Traveling Between Manhattan and Newark Airport (EWR)

Newark Airport - "Best Ways to Get From Manhattan to Newark" - Two Traveling Texans

Sometimes the best flight options involve travel from Newark Airport (EWR).  However, getting to EWR from Manhattan can be more difficult and more expensive than going to JFK or LGA.  While you should take that into consideration when selecting your flight, you don’t have to avoid EWR at all costs.

There are several different ways to travel between Newark (EWR) and Manhattan.  While Newark Liberty Airport is less than 20 miles from midtown Manhattan, traffic across the Hudson River regardless of what crossing you use can be a bit unpredictable, so always leave extra time.

Since people really appreciated our tips on how to get to JFK airport , I thought I should also share some of my thoughts on traveling between Manhattan and Newark Airport (EWR).   If you need to travel from Newark Airport to Manhattan or vice versa keep reading for a rundown of the different transportation options that will help you choose the best one.

About Newark Airport

How to get to newark airport, nj transit train to newark airport, newark airport express bus, door to door newark airport shuttle, taxi between newark and manhattan, car service to ewr, uber to ewr, traveling to newark airport from lower manhattan on public transportation, the verdict on the best way to get from manhattan to newark airport, expert tips for traveling between newark airport and manhattan.

Newark Airport, formally known as Newark Liberty International Airport,  is the busiest (by number of flights) of New York City’s three main airports.  It is actually located in the cities of Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Google Map of new york city

The airport has three terminals (A,B, and C) that are connected by the AirTrain.  There are about 50 airlines that operate out of Newark, the largest tenant is United.  It is one of the airline’s hubs.  Newark Airport has three runways and a helipad.

The best way from Manhattan to Newark (EWR) is going to depend on your situation.  Even if you have a car, I don’t recommend driving to Newark Airport, traffic can be terrible and parking is expensive.  You could choose from New Jersey Transit Train, Newark Airport Express bus, door to door shuttle , yellow taxi, and uber/car service.

Consider the following questions:

  • Are you pressed for time?
  • Are you trying to save money?
  • Do you have a lot of bags?
  • What terminal are you going to?
  • Will you be traveling to EWR during rush hour (7-9 am or 4-7pm)?

In this post, I go through the pros and cons of each Newark airport transportation option.  This information applies whether you need transportation from Manhattan to Newark Airport or want to travel from Newark to Manhattan.

If you are traveling to LaGuardia Airport, check out my post on going from LGA to Manhattan .

You can take New Jersey Transit trains from Penn Station to the Newark Airport Rail Station, which takes less than 30 minutes.  Then you will need to take the Air Train to your terminal.  The ticket for the AirTrain is included in the price of your train ticket, but you need to use the NJ Transit train ticket to board the Air Train.

Make sure you buy your ticket before you board the train or you will have to pay a penalty fare.  You can buy the tickets at the machines at the station or through the New Jersey Transit mobile app .  At Penn Station, there is also a ticket window.

Inside Penn Station you can catch a NJ Transit Train to Newark Airport Rail Station. -"The Best Options for Traveling Between Manhattan and Newark Airport (EWR)" - Two Traveling Texans

Please get to Penn Station early enough to allow for extra time if you need to purchase a ticket (lines can be long) and figure out what platform the train will be on.  Some trains will also stop at Newark Penn Station – do NOT get off there, it is not the airport stop.  Check the departure board and make sure your train has an airplane symbol or “EWR”.

Going on the train with luggage can be difficult especially during peak hours.   Luckily there are escalators (and elevators) so you don’t have to worry about carrying luggage up or down stairs.  Although there have been times when they have been out of service.

Also, I have to warn you about the reliability of the AirTrain.  I have probably taken it 10 times and have had problems twice.  Maybe I am just unlucky?  Well, both times I was thankful I had time to spare.

Check the schedule for the NJ Transit Trains to EWR here .

Download the NJ Transit app here to buy tickets.

Cost: From Penn Station, it is $15.25 each way for adults or $11.25 for kids, seniors, or those that are disabled.  This is the cheapest way to go between Manhattan and Newark Airport.

The Newark Airport Express bus (now operated by CoachUSA) can be a good option to get to EWR, especially if you are close to one of the stops and have a lot of bags.  I pick up the bus at Bryant Park (42nd St. between 5th and 6th Avenues) but there are also stops by Grand Central and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

*The Doubletree Times Square West Hotel is conveniently located right by Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Newark Airport Express is cheaper than a car service, and you can buy tickets on the bus.  However, the Newark Liberty Airport Express bus only runs every 20-30 minutes and can be delayed if there is traffic.  I would recommend getting to the bus stop 4 hours before youf flight to allow for delays and traffic.

The bus to Newark Airport does have free WIFI, although it has never worked that well for me.

The bus is a great option to get to Newark, but they don't always stay on schedule. - "The Best Options for Traveling Between Manhattan and Newark Airport (EWR)" - Two Traveling Texans

For a brief period of time, they added a downtown route for the Newark Airport Express, but unfortunately, it is no longer an option.  You must catch the bus from one of the midtown bus stops.  Please check the Newark Airport Express website for more details.

You can buy your ticket on the bus.  They accept cash and credit cards.  There is no discount for buying in advance.

Cost: $33 round trip or $18.70 each way for adults. Children aged 0-16 can get a $5 one-way ticket.  Seniors and travelers with disabilities can buy $18.70 Round Trip or $9.35 One Way tickets.  Note that there is a $1.50 administrative fee added to each ticket sale.

Go Airlink NYC offers a shuttle service which picks you up at your door and takes you directly to Newark Airport.   Most likely you will also be making stops to pick up other passengers, so it is not going to be the fastest option.

The EWR airport shuttle could make things a lot easier if you have heavy luggage, so the extra time might be worth it.  They have a similar baggage policy to many airlines – one large suitcase and one carryon are allowed free of charge.  Taking the shuttle to Newark Airport makes the most sense if you are traveling alone as they charge per person.

You will need to book the service in advance to make sure you have a seat on the van.  They will ask for your flight information so that they can track delays.  You won’t need to print out any voucher, just show the online confirmation code to the driver.

travel from nyc to ewr

Cost: Prices for the Newark Airport Shuttle start at $20 per person each way.  Each adult can bring along one child under three for free. Additional children and children four and older, must pay the regular price.  I have found this shuttle to be cheaper than other similar options.

Of course, you can just get a taxi to Newark Airport from NYC if you are in a pinch, but I would not recommend it.  It will cost you whatever the meter reads plus tolls ($10.50 – $15.00) and the Newark surcharge ($17.50).  Additionally, I would say getting a taxi from Newark to Manhattan should be your last resort.

NYC Taxi to Newark Airport - Two Traveling Texans

Coming from EWR to the city you will have to use a Newark Taxi instead of an NYC one.  Newark Airport to Manhattan taxi fares range $50 to $70 but also be prepared for lots of extra fees like:

  • surcharges for using a credit card ($5.50)
  • traveling during rush hour ($5)
  • bags over 24 inches (varies)

The taxi from EWR to Manhattan will also charge you for the toll ($10.50 – $15.00 above the base rate) and of course gratuity is not included.

Cost: $65 – $105 depending on the time of day and where in Manhattan you are going.  You can split the taxi fare with other passengers as there are no per person charges.

As long as it is not rush hour and there are no accidents, this will be the fastest way to get to or from the airport, but it can be pricey.  You are paying to save time and not have to worry about carrying your bags around.

A car service to Newark airport from Manhattan will vary a lot in price and many need advance booking.  It’s so nice to have a driver meet you at baggage claim when you land.   Seeing my name on a sign, makes me feel important!

I think Carmel is best car service to Newark airport.  They have special airport pricing which usually ends up being about the same as (or sometimes even less than) a taxi, but the cars are much nicer.  Also, you can book online in advance and earn frequent flyer miles with most airlines for your trip to or from the airport.  Carmel also has a handy app.

Click here to check prices for Carmel Car Service online .

I should mention you should never accept a ride from the drivers that come up to you at the airport and ask you if you need a taxi.  This is against the law and many of these drivers may not be properly insured.

Cost: Quotes for fares do not include tax, toll, or tip.  The fare for taking a car to EWR can range from $40 – $150 depending on where exactly you are coming from, what type of car, and if you are able to get a discount.  However, you can split the cost when traveling with others, there are no fees for additional passengers.

Taking an Uber to Newark Airport is also an option, but pricing can vary greatly depending on the demand.

A couple times, I have been lucky and have been able to get an Uber pool for $29 from Newark to my apartment in midtown.  Both times this happened, I didn’t even have to share a ride from Newark airport to Manhattan with anyone.  However, you cannot count on being able to get that price and I have not seen any Uber deals going to Newark Airport from Manhattan.

Cost: Quotes for fares do not include tip.  The fare for taking for taking an Uber to EWR can range from $29 (Uber Pool) – $150 depending on where exactly you are coming from and the demand at the time you order the uber.  However, you can split the cost when traveling with others, there are no fees for additional passengers.

All the trains and buses leave from midtown Manhattan, so you might be wondering what to do if you are heading to Newark Airport from downtown?

Instead of taking the subway to midtown to catch either the train or the bus, you can take the PATH train from World Trade Center to Newark Penn Station.  Then you would need to transfer to the #62 NJ Transit bus which runs every 15 minutes or better on weekdays and Saturdays, and every 30 minutes or better on Sundays and overnight.  While you can use your Metrocard on the PATH train, you will need to purchase a bus ticket at a vending machine at Newark Penn Station or pay the fare with exact change when you board the bus.

If you don’t want to take the bus, you can transfer to a NJ Transit train with an airplane icon on departure boards.  Then at the Newark Airport Train Station, you will need to take the AirTrain to your terminal.  Remember to hold on to your NJ Transit train ticket because you will need to show it to board the AirTrain.

Cost: If you take the PATH and then transfer to the bus, your total fare is $4.35.  It is a bit more expensive if you take the train and will cost $13.75.

As you can see, there are several different options for transportation to Newark Airport.  In summary, when I am traveling between Manhattan and Newark Airport for work, I like to take a car service or taxi, unless it is during rush hour.

If I am trying to be frugal or it is rush hour, I will take the train to Newark Airport.  When I have a lot of luggage and want to be frugal, I would take the bus.  If I have extra time and don’t want to deal with my luggage at all, I would take the Newark Airport Shuttle.

From downtown, it is fastest (and most cost effective) to take the PATH and then transfer to the bus or NJ Transit train.

Late at night (i.e. midnight to 4 am) you won’t be able to take any of the public transportation options.   So it’s best to either book a car service or airport shuttle or plan on waiting in the taxi line.

Regardless of what option you choose, please make sure you leave extra time when traveling between Manhattan and Newark Airport.  So what do you think is the best way to get to EWR from Manhattan or from Manhattan to EWR?

Have a safe flight!

The cheapest and best way to get from Newark airport (EWR) to Manhattan (2022 Update)

by Dan Miller | Jan 2, 2017 | airports , all | 62 comments

After searching the various options for paid and award flights into New York, we ended up flying Delta from Cincinnati to Newark Liberty . So, because we were going to be landing at EWR ( adding an ‘E’ to my list of airport code arrivals !), we needed to find the cheapest and best way to get from Newark airport to Manhattan.

I did a bunch of research, so I thought I would share it with you to help you figure out the best way to get from Newark Liberty International Airport to New York City. (If you’re flying round-trip to NYC or are otherwise departing from EWR , I’ve also written a guide to find the cheapest and best way to get *from* Manhattan to Newark Liberty airport .

Getting from Newark Liberty International airport (EWR) to Manhattan by taxi

You can absolutely take a taxi or (or even limo service!) from Newark airport to Manhattan, but it will be fairly expensive. Depending on where you want to go in Manhattan, a taxi from Newark Liberty to Manhattan is likely to cost anywhere from $40 to $70, exclusive of tips and tolls.

Note that during an additional $6-$10 will be applied to airport pick-up between 5 PM and 5 AM, and their pricing does not include tolls and tips. And obviously you will be in a car , so you’re subject to New York City traffic, especially if you’re traveling in rush hour (which seems like every hour!).

Getting from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Manhattan by shared car service like Uber or Lyft

Uber gives an estimate of $43 – $50 to go from Newark airport to Manhattan:

uber-estimate-newark-airport-manhattan

Lyft is similarly priced from EWR to Manhattan , though both Uber and Lyft often run promotions, especially in NYC , so be sure to check with them before you go.

[ The time my Lyft driver went the wrong way down a one-way street ]

If you do sign up for Uber or Lyft , if you use my referral code you will get a bonus on your first ride.

Getting from Newark Liberty (EWR) to Manhattan by express bus or airport shuttle

If you want to travel on a single public bus from EWR to the city … you can’t. That’s because different transit authorities serve New York and New Jersey . NJ Transit bus lines 28, 37, 62, 67, and 107 all serve Liberty Airport.

Of course, buses also go on the road, so when going from Newark to New York City by bus , you’ll be subject to traffic during rush hour .

The best way to get from Newark airport (EWR) to Manhattan

Although those classic yellow taxis , Ubers or Lyfts, buses, shuttle service , car service , and even limos are all feasible ride options to get from Newark airport to Manhattan , the absolute best way is by train . (Plus, taking public transportation makes you feel like a local.)

Taking the train into midtown Manhattan costs $13, which includes the fees for both (1) the AirTrain Newark, which takes you from Newark airport to Newark Liberty Airport Station, and (2) for the NJ Transit train, which runs from Newark Liberty Airport Station to New York Penn Station. The Newark Airport AirTrain runs every 3 minutes for most of the day.

newark-airport-manhattan-airtrain-map

Note for families: The whole train ride from Newark airport to Penn Station costs $13 for adults. The AirTran portion of the trip ($5.50) is not charged for children 11 and under, AND the other portion is half-price, making a child’s ticket $3.50 .

Another advantage of taking the train from Newark to Manhattan is that you’re not on the road (duh), so you don’t have to deal with all the traffic. When we visited NYC, our flight arrived at about 8:45 a.m., still in the ending stages of rush hour , so a ride in a taxi or bus could have taken over an hour. Our train from Newark Liberty International to Penn Station in Manhattan was about 30 minutes end to end.

Step-by-step instructions on how to take the transit train from Newark International Airport to NYC

Make your way through the Newark airport terminal , following the signs for the AirTrain. (We landed at Terminal B, and with all the signs, it was quite clear where we needed to go.) As we walked toward the AirTrain, we found a train ticket kiosk to purchase tickets AND a helpful NJ Transit employee who helped us understand which ones to buy and how to buy them. Continuing to follow the signs for the AirTrain led us to a waiting area that looked like this:

newark-airport-nyc-air-train-waiting-station

We lined up on the right to go to P4 and RailLink. We just missed a train when we got there, so we had to wait a few minutes for the next one. We were there a little after 9 a.m. and it was quite busy — our train was pretty crowded with passengers but with only one carry-on, it wasn’t too bad .

A few stops later, we were at the Newark Liberty Airport train station . There you will have to scan your ticket to go through the turnstiles. Once you do, you will get to a doorway that looks like this:

cheapest-way-get-from-newark-airport-to-manhattan-train-doorway

IMPORTANT NOTE: You need to show your ticket twice! You’ll use your ticket to scan through the turnstiles when going from Newark Airport into the Newark Liberty Airport train station and then AGAIN once you’re on your NJ Transit train . The conductor will come through the train asking to see tickets. You might think that once you scan your ticket at the turnstiles, you won’t need it again — but make sure to hold on to it!

Taking the NJ Transit train from Liberty International Airport to Manhattan

Follow the signs to Tracks 1 / A, where you will go downstairs and take the first NJ Transit train you see. Some Amtrak trains also stop there, so make sure you’re on an NJ Transit train to get from Newark to Manhattan , or you’ll have to pay the Amtrak fare . Unless you are trying to go from Newark Airport to Manhattan in the middle of the night (and probably even then!), there will be a ton of other passengers – just follow the crowds. :-).

You will take the train for about 3 to 5 stations. The first one is NEWARK Penn Station — that is NOT the same as New York Penn Station , so don’t get off there! The train that goes from Newark Airport to Manhattan ends at New York Penn Station (NYP), so really, you just have to wait till it ends. Again, that’s where most passengers will be getting off, so it’s a good policy to just follow the crowd .

Once you’re at Penn Station , follow the signs to the street, and you’ll pop out in the middle of Manhattan – between 7th and 8th Avenues and 31st and 33rd streets! You can then take a taxi , Uber or Lyft , or the subway — or even walk — to your final destination .

The cheapest way to get from Newark airport (EWR) to Manhattan (another option)

As a few people in the comments have pointed out, you CAN get from Newark airport (EWR) to Manhattan cheaper than taking the train from the airport. Buses 62 and 67 go from Newark airport to Newark Penn Station. The NJ Transit app is the best way to buy tickets – my adult ticket cost $1.60. And since NJ Transit offers a “ Family SuperSaver ” Two children ages five through 11 may travel free with a passenger paying any valid fare on weekends and holidays, I didn’t have to buy a child fare. Follow the signs outside the terminal to the NJ Transit section

a bus on the road

The buses come every 30 minutes I think and the bus ride itself takes about 20 minutes through scenic downtown Newark. It puts you right outside of Newark Penn Station. Once you walk through the doors, head towards your left (follow the signs)

a glass doors with people walking in the background

You’ll go around the corner. Then PATH trains to the World Trade Center will be on your right ($2.75 fare payable with your MTA card) and NJ Transit trains to New York Penn Station will be on your left. Here is what the waiting area for NJ Transit trains looked like – you can take any of the above as they will all go through New York Penn Station

a digital screen with a train schedule

Again, the NJ Transit app is the easiest way to buy tickets. My ticket was $5.60 to go between Newark Penn Station and New York Penn Station and my daughter’s was free due to it being a weekend. Make sure to keep your ticket since as mentioned above, the conductor will come through the train checking tickets.

So taking the bus then train is the absolute cheapest way to get from Newark Airport to New York City (Manhattan). It does take a bit longer and requires a bit more savvy, so it’s up to you whether you want to deal with that or just pay a few bucks more to take the train directly from the airport.

There are cheaper ways. You can take a local bus from EWR to Newark Penn Station and then switch to the Path train. This is the cheapest but if you’re going to Midtown your way is prob the best way to get to Midtown.

Lakesha Davis

Thanks a million! I just saw another article stating the bus cost is $1.60 and to have exact change. My only concern now is that there will be four of us traveling(each with a carryon) and my husband will have one checked bag. I read that it’s up to the discretion of the driver if he will allow you to ride with a larger checked bag. Carryon’s are fine.

Heffa

Another option is Uber/Lyft to PATH stations Newport or Exchange Place in NJ (or two any other PATH stations. That cost about $19. From there ride with PATH $2.75 to any Manhattan location.

MiamiFlyer

Bit of an error in this. Amtrak is significantly more expensive, around $30 or so, and they do not honor NJ TRANSIT tickets. You should make sure the train is a NJ Transit train before boarding or you will have to pay the onboard Amtrak fare.

Overall, this is an easy way to into Manhattan. If you are headed to Wall Street, then your best bet is to get off at Newark Penn Station and grab a PATH train for $2.75.

Dan Miller

Thanks for the tips – I’ve clarified that in the post

Frank

As said above, the cheapest way is the bus to Newark Penn, then the PATH, which is a hair over five bucks total. I also personally feel that’s the best way to do it, too. I wish you’d put a line in your post letting people know that there actually is a real cheap way to do the whole trip – for the same price as the airtrain portion of your proposed route above.

Ian Mitchell

It’s the way I’d recommend as cheapest. I will note that that bus limits luggage, so if you’re flying with multiple bags, you may wanna take the train (and there are options there, some involving path, others not)

How far do you have to walk to get to the bus? I will be needing to get to NYC from Newark Airport and I want to do it the cheapest way possible. I’m afraid of having to travel too far to get to the bus.

Newark Airport to NJ Train to Penn Station is the way to do it – you don’t have to walk very far at all and the cost is IMO very reasonable

Jeff

Thanks for the article. My wife and I will have an 18 hour stopover at Newark soon and want to spend a few hours in Manhattan. This is perfect!

Glad it could help!

VX_Flier

Great guide for the rookie tourist, like me. Bravo!

Omkhar

A slightly more expensive car service would be to use Uber Pool or Via. Both are between 25-30 before tolls (roughly 40-45 all in). You’ll be sharing the car with someone else (possible more than one other “someone else”)

Also, if going to WTC or elsewhere on the PATH line, NJT to Newark Penn is around $8.50, and then grab the PATH to wherever you want to go.

Steven

You should fly to LaGuardia next time. Take the public bus and subway. It’ll cost you 2.75 per person to get to Midtown.

Yes that is certainly an option, if your travel plans allow. Though I’ve heard currently Laguardia is a giant mess of traffic / construction right now…

gfmommy

Thank you for your post. This is our first time to the city. We will be there for some time. We will be traveling with 2 suitcases each, plus a bag. Will using this route to get to Manhattan be difficult? We are flying in on a weekday at 5pm. Thank You

Riding the train as I did will be difficult with 2 suitcases and a bag each. There is nowhere really to store luggage. You might want to try either an express bus or an Uber / Lyft / taxi

Thank You so much for your input. I was really worried about riding the train with that much luggage. That helps make our decision!! Happy New Year!!

Glad I could help!

Eduardo

Hello Dan! I’m gonna to Manhattan from Newark with 1 large/medium luggage and 1 backpack I think is good to go by train right?

The train will not have really anywhere to put your luggage near your seats / aisles – it’s a regular train. It has places for luggage above the seats, so if it’s small enough (think rollerboard carryon) to put up there, you should be fine.

Sharon

Once you are at the Newark Airport station are there different PATH trains to take? Some people have mentioned going to WTC instead of Penn Station. Once in Manhattan we are taking the subway to our hotel so if it’s significantly cheaper to go to WTC then that might be a good alternative.

Thanks for your post! I have searched all over for easy directions and yours have been the best by far.

Sam

Hi Sharon, where is your hotel approximately? You can either take PATH to WTC or Herald Square, Whole NJT will bring you to Penn Station. Let me know and I can give you some better advice 🙂

suzi

My husband and I have only carry-on. Once in Manhattan, we need to end up at the Brooklyn cruise terminal, red hook area. What do you suggest?

I’d use Google Maps to get some options. It looks like taking public transportation will take a couple of transfers. So depending on how adventurous you feel and how much time you have, you could either just hire a car / bus, or take the PATH to Penn Station and Uber from there, or try public transit all the way.

I take the train from EWR to Manhattan often. Was in the middle of writting notes on how to do this for a friend. Found your post and it was way better than my notes. Very nice job. I need to hire you to travel everywhere before me and give me the easy travel notes !!!

Glad you enjoyed it!

Liza

Thank you so much for this . This is very helpful & very informative .May I please have your referral code for Lyft or Uber please ? Do you happen to know when the best time in the morning to go to Woodbury outlet from Port Authority Bus station? I was thinking of getting the coach at 8am , it will be on a Wednesday . Once again thank you for this , please continue doing this as it really helps people like us .

My uber code is https://www.pointswithacrew.com/go/uber

Julie

I am thinking to buy a 7 day Public transportation pass (bus/subways). Do you know if I can buy these passes at Penn station

s sculls

This is very informative, thanks! My husband is meeting me at Newark airport with our 1-year-old and we will head from there to NYC. It’s difficult to avoid the car seat question of transportation and this sounds like the way to go. Do you think it will be equally convenient to get back into Newark from NYC for an 8am Friday morning flight? TIA!

Yes – it works pretty much the same way on the way from Manhattan to Newark airport

Jean B

I just want to say, as a visual learner, your photos that accompanied your very clear step-by-step instructions were SOOOOOO helpful! The staff at the airport (I arrived at terminal A) were so helpful, as well, in pointing me in the direction of the AirTrain. And once I got up to the platform and recognized it from your photo, I was relieved. Again, upon arriving at the NJ Transit rail station (Newark Liberty Airport Train Station), the signs to platform A were helpful! And thanks for the tip about keeping your ticket out for the conductor! For people from the area, maybe there are other alternatives. But for someone from way out of town, your guide was perfect! This is the easiest trip I have ever made by myself in a new place! And it beats paying the $50+ that I paid a month ago to take an Uber (the traffic surcharge got me!) from midtown to LaGuardia!

Jean – I’m glad it was helpful! I also found that the airport staff was super nice and helpful

Ashleigh

This was incredibly thorough and helpful. An easy and quick read. I landed unsure of how I’d get to Manhatan but after reading this I felt so comfortable. Just wanted to say thank you! 🙂

Ashleigh – I’m glad it helped! If you have to get back to EWR when you’re done, I also have a guide for how to get from Manhattan to Newark Airport

Torrey

Thanks so much for this thorough post! My husband and I are making a trip to Manhattan in January, and neither of us have been to New York without a guide. I’ve got a much better peace of mind now after reading… and note taking haha. Again, this is much appreciated!

Torrey – I’m glad that you enjoyed it! Good luck and happy travels in New York!

Lisa

Thank you very much for the exceptional post!!

Jenny

Thank you so much for this very helpful post!

Anah

Thanks for the very informative post. Will be flying into EWR next week , staying in Manhattan. So will use the information on this post to get to our midtown hotel

Great! I’m glad that it can help you!

Chelsea

Helped me a ton! Thank you so much for making this.

Shilpa

thanks a lot for the crystal clear information on the transportation of NY. keep informing us about such useful things thru your posts.. its very much helpful for tourists like me coming first time to NY from altogether different continent. 🙂 also it would be of great help if you can guide me how to reach the rector street station from Newark liberty international airport in cheapest way! 🙂

Take the train to Penn Station then transfer to the 1 train south to Rector Street.

shilpa

thanks for the great post. Question: My hotel is in Tribeca….is it best to go to nyc Penn stain and then the subway or Newark Penn and take PATH

I’d imagine that it won’t make a big difference. I’d put your hotel address into Google Maps (transit directions) and see what it says

Heather Dinwiddie

My daughter and I are coming in around 1am Saturday. Would this be an option you still take? Or would Uber/Lyft be a better option?

I would check the Google Maps transit directions. It looks like there are public transit options, but not as convenient. I’d probably consider either one of the private airport bus transfer companies or use Uber / Lyft, depending on how much you value convenience vs price

TATHAGATA MALAKAR

I would be travelling to NYC and landing at Newark in the early morning. I need to travel to Columbus Circle – 6 Columbus Hotel. What would be the easiest and cheapest way. I am comfortable walking at the start or at the end but not in middle. I would be having a checked luggage and a small laptop bag.

I’d follow the instructions in the post and take the Air Train / NJ Transit to Penn Station. Then take the A, C or 1 subway trains to Columbus Circle. Google Maps transit instructions are usually very helpful as well

Lori

Are there any updates to this article? I am flying to NYC to consult with a doc for my son. Seems the best prices on flights are into EWR. We need to get to NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital on East 17th Street. Lucky me, I just injured my foot! Would love to minimize the walking since I will have a boot.

Juliann Jones

CommentYour post was so helpful! I appreciated having the options and thought I chose wisely (since Go Airlink isn’t doing shared rides during COVID) and bought tickets on the Express bus into Manhattan. The price was great: $30 RT. BUT— that’s money I’ll never get back and the bus drove right by me and my daughter when as we were waiting at the designated bus stop. Since I’d already bought tickets, we waited for the next bus. Inconvenient, but we got there. Unfortunately, we were not as lucky trying to get BACK to the airport. Even though we went to Bryant Park an hour early and waited with our suitcases under the bus stop sign where we got off, the bus veered toward us, but then kept going. I was stunned!!!! It drove right past us and there wouldn’t be another one for over an hour!!! And who knew if that one would stop? I had no choice but to get a taxi at that point, to the tune of $113. PLUS the $60 I’d already spent on the Express bus tickets. I called them immediately. They never responded to my voicemail. I emailed them 6 times before they responded to say that they would not refund my tickets.

So, I’d suggest not wasting your money on the Express bus. They wasted my time and my money and I ended up scrambling last minute just to get back to the airport.

Ugh – that is so frustrating! Good feedback for future travelers

gina Houghton-Larsen

Isn’t another viable and relatively inexpensive option to get an UBER/LYFT from NEWARK airport to the PATH at Exchange Place in Jersey City–then take PATH over to WTC?

That’s another great option. I think a lot of what determines the best way to get from Newark Airport to Manhattan is exactly where you are going in Manhattan or New York. That will help you decide whether it makes more sense to arrive at Penn Station or at the WTC

SMITHA

I was reading post and its very informative, would you also do something to go around financial district and Little Italy and Little India etc…so that we can enjoy STRESS free transits across NY

David

The ABSOLUT cheapest way to NYC from EWR Airport: Take the #62 bus from outside the terminal to NEWARK PENN STATION… $1.50 Change there for the PATH train to either lower Manhattan (WTC) or midtown (up to 34th St) $2. TOTAL $3.50

How to Get from Newark Airport to Manhattan (2023)

Getting from Newark Airport to Manhattan can seem confusing when you’re not familiar with the New York area. After all, it’s not often you arrive in an entirely different state from your final destination!

This detailed (written-by-a-local) guide will help you decide the best way to get from Newark to Manhattan with all the step-by-step info you need so you can compare all the ways to get from Newark to New York City and choose the one that makes the most sense for you, your travel companions, and budget.

So whether you want the fastest way to get from Newark to New York City or the cheapest way, keep reading! All the details you need are below.

And if not, be sure to leave a comment. We’re happy to help take the stress out of transferring from Newark to Manhattan.

How to Get from Newark Airport to Manhattan

Just for some clarity and context, Newark Airport (EWR) is about 17 miles from Midtown Manhattan. While Laguardia Airport is the closest airport to Manhattan mileage-wise, it doesn’t always translate to quicker transfer times into Manhattan or to your NYC hotel .

Depending on the day and time you arrive and the way you choose to travel from EWR to Manhattan, the trip can take about half an hour or well over an hour.

Choosing the right means of transportation for your situation, travel style, and travel budget can make all the difference between arriving at your hotel frazzled or not.

In the table below, use the quick glance information for each way to get from Newark Airport to Manhattan. Then, for all of the specific details about how to transfer from EWR to NYC, find everything you need to know in the corresponding sections below.

Newark Airport to NYC by Taxi

Newark Airport to Manhattan Private Car transfer

If it’s your first trip to New York City , a taxi is undoubtedly one of the easiest ways to transfer from Newark Airport into the city. Newark Airport has taxi stands at every terminal and posted signs to show you the way.

You should look for the yellow taxi queues and avoid anyone trying to solicit you for rides to Manhattan. These are unlicensed cars and offer no protection when it comes to overcharging and other scams.

Depending on where you’re going, a taxi from Newark to Manhattan can cost between $60-$80, not including tolls, tips, and other possible surcharges that depend on where you’re going, the time of day (i.e. rush hour), and the size of your luggage. The local taxi commission will also add a surcharge for credit card payments.

Unlike rides from other NYC airports like JFK Airport , there is no flat rate. Your taxi fare will be calculated by the meter and determined by the traffic conditions and where your hotel is in Manhattan. This also determines how long the taxi ride will take, which during many times of the day could be between 45-60 minutes.

So while taxis from Newark to Manhattan offer door-to-door service and are among the easiest ways to get from Newark to Manhattan, they’re also among the most expensive ways to transfer from Newark Airport.

Car Service from Newark Airport to Manhattan

You can also pre-arrange a car service which helps to avoid long lines at the taxi queue. In particular, this could be a good way to go if you’re traveling with a family or group of more than 4 people and need a bigger vehicle.

Trusted car service companies like Carmel Car and Limo Service also quote you a price for getting from Newark to NYC so you know what the cost is before ever stepping into the car. This can be a major plus when compared to being at the mercy of a taxi meter.

Rides typically start at about $60 and go up from there . This price includes airport surcharges but doesn’t include tolls or tip. As with a taxi or a rideshare car, the amount of time it takes to get to your New York City hotel will vary based on the traffic when you arrive.

You’ll get door-to-door service like using the other premium options in this Newark Airport to Manhattan guide. You’ll also know the cost ahead of time and have a driver tracking your flight and waiting for you to arrive.

Uber from Newark to Manhattan

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft offer service from EWR to Manhattan. And while they’re not subject to a meter like a taxi, prices can wildly fluctuate depending on the time of day, demand, and the type of ride you select.

In fact, prices can range from $70-$75 to twice that amount for the most expensive vehicle type.

If you choose to use a rideshare app to get a ride from Newark to New York City, consider your arrival time. Sunday mornings will be less expensive than needing a ride during peak hours on a weekday.

Once you arrive at Newark Airport, you’ll select your terminal and the door number in the arrivals area outside. Keep in mind, these pick-up points aren’t guaranteed so you still may need to move to another area at the terminal to meet your driver.

As with other private rides, the travel time to reach Manhattan or other parts of New York City will depend largely on traffic. And as convenient as a rideshare might be, if you pre-book and your flight is delayed or you call the car too early only to find out the airline lost your luggage, your driver may consider you a no-show.

Bottom Line: Taxis, Car Services & Rideshares from Newark Airport

Of these 3 transfer options, I would go with a pre-booked car service unless I was all but certain my flight was arriving at such an off-peak hour that the metered taxi fare would be less. The hassle-free door-to-door service, combined with knowing the cost ahead of time and having a driver tracking my flight, offers the most value for this premium option.

A cab from Newark to Manhattan is undoubtedly the most expensive New York airport transfer. If you’re looking to keep costs down, keep reading because one of the options below will be a better fit.

Shared Shuttle from Newark to Manhattan

Newark Airport to Manhattan George Washington Bridge

Go Airlink NYC is an official partner with the New York and New Jersey Port Authorities and has earned a reputation among NYC hotels as the most trusted New York airport shuttle.

An NYC airport shuttle is a cost-friendly and environmentally-friendly way to transfer between EWR and NYC because you’re sharing the ride with other travelers.

Shuttles can be booked in advance and your driver will track your flight and wait should there be any delays. You’ll get door-to-door shuttle service to and from your Manhattan hotel no matter when you arrive because transportation from Newark Airport to Manhattan is available 24/7.

Expect to pay about $40 which includes tax and tolls to go from EWR to Manhattan. Shuttles leave regularly, although you may need to wait for a short time for other passengers. Likewise, the ride could be shorter or longer depending on if you’re one of the first to be dropped off or one of the last.

Nevertheless, if you’re looking to save some money but don’t want the hassle of figuring out the bus or train, the best way to get from Newark Airport to Manhattan is the Go Airlink NYC shuttle.

Pro Tip:  Go Airlink Groups & Charters is also great for bigger parties needing an entire SUV or van. Not only can everyone travel together, but the cost can also be split.

Bottom Line: Shared Shuttle from Newark Airport

The Go Airlink NYC shuttle service is a good choice when you want direct service to your New York City hotel but don’t want to pay the higher price for a private airport transfer. You avoid having to lug your bags onto public transportation and you pay roughly half of what you’d pay with a taxi, car service, or rideshare.

Newark Airport to New York City via Express Bus Service

Newark Airport to Manhattan Bus Seats

There’s also a Newark Liberty Airport Express Bus available from Newark Airport to 3 different locations in Manhattan. These include:

  • Grand Central Station (41st Street between Park & Lexington Avenues)
  • Bryant Park (42nd Street & 5th Avenue), and
  • Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues).

Pay careful attention to the bus schedule, though. Some departures are asterisked to indicate they only stop at Port Authority Bus Terminal.

The bus from Newark Airport to NYC is available from all 3 terminals. Whichever terminal you’re in, head outside of the arrivals area. From Terminal A, buses leave Zone 16. Passengers in Terminal B should go to Lane 2 in the outdoor arrival area. While Terminal C passengers will find the express bus at stops 5 & 6.

Buses depart as frequently as every 15-20 minutes, while at other times buses leave every 45 minutes. Service is available from Newark to Manhattan between 5:30 a.m. to 10:50 p.m. every day. The ride could take between 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.

If your hotel is not within walking distance of one of the above drop-off locations, you can access the subway from any of the stops listed above. You can also hail a taxi to get to your final destination.

This cost would be on top of the price for the bus ticket so this option is best for people with hotels in Midtown . A taxi to hotels Uptown or in Lower Manhattan would be a considerable added cost.

Adult tickets for the bus cost $21.20 . A child bus ticket costs $8.00 for children up to 16 years old. Seniors and people with disabilities can purchase reduced-priced tickets for $11.85. All prices include the applicable surcharges.

Bottom Line: Newark Airport Express Bus to Manhattan

The Newark Airport Express Bus Service and overall experience can definitely be hit or miss! There are no seat reservation s for the express bus so you’re at the mercy of the amount of space the bus has for the number of people waiting to board. Even when choosing a specific bus time, there’s no guarantee that bus will have space . Your ticket is open and can be used on any scheduled bus for the route purchased. And as with all buses that run in New York City, they tend to run late so plan accordingly. If you’re hoping to save money by using public transportation to get from Newark Airport to Manhattan, I’d recommend you keep reading to learn about the train options.

How to Take the Train from Newark Airport to NYC – (Midtown)

Airtrain Station at Newark Airport NYC

The Newark Airport AirTrain combined with New Jersey Transit trains are the most budget-friendly way to travel from Newark Airport to Manhattan.

Not only that, you’ll stay off the roads and avoid traffic (A.K.A. saving your sanity!) which can be a major timesaver. In fact, the ride is roughly 30 minutes to NYC, the fastest option of all the ways to get from Newark to NYC.

The train ride from Newark Airport to Manhattan begins with the AirTrain , which is available from each of the three Newark Airport terminals, A, B, & C.

AirTrain runs 24/7 365 days a year and arrives and departs every 3 minutes from 5 a.m. to midnight and approximately every 15 minutes between midnight and 5 a.m. New Jersey Transit operates 21 hours a day with no trains running from Newark Liberty Airport Station to New York City between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. every night.

From your terminal,  follow the signs to the AirTrain , stopping at the orange and blue NJ Transit ticket machines at the AirTrain entrance to purchase tickets. The ticket you buy is for your complete journey on both the AirTrain and the NJ Transit train. If you plan to use the train for your return trip, you can also buy a round trip now.

Pro Tip:  Save time and download the NJ Transit app to buy your train tickets on the go and avoid the lines at the ticket machines.

Port Authority AirTrain Map at Newark Liberty Airport

You’ll need to purchase a ticket to go to New York Penn Station,  NOT Newark Penn Station, for everyone ages 12 and up. The cost of a one-way ticket is $15.75. Seniors, members of the military, people with disabilities, and children ages 5-11 pay just $11.75.

Head up to the AirTrain platform and take the train going to the Newark Liberty International Airport AirTrain station.

The ride is not long, taking anywhere from 7-10 minutes depending on the airport terminal from where you started.

At the Newark Liberty Airport Station, get off the AirTrain and connect with the NJ Transit train going to New York Penn Station. Look for signs and screens directing you to the right platform.

Screen showing trains heading to New York City from Newark Airport

Most mistakes happen here!

  • Make sure you get on the train bound for New York Penn Station , not Newark Penn Station. The ride to New York Penn will be about 30 minutes. Newark Penn takes about half that time.
  • The train you’re looking for is an NJ Transit train , not an Amtrak train. The specific lines are called the Northeast Corridor and the North Jersey Coast Line.

ProTip: New Jersey Transit trains often run with delays. You may have planned to take a particular train only to realize a train running 20 minutes late has just arrived and is going to New York Penn Station. Take it! The important thing is to end in the right spot regardless of which time train gets you there.

Expect a train conductor to check tickets onboard the NJ Transit train. The train is also likely to make a couple of stops but don’t get off the train until you reach New York Penn Station.

Once you arrive at Penn Station in New York City, access the NYC subway system or get to a taxi line for a cab to your final destination, whether you’re staying in Midtown, Chelsea , or the Upper West Side . Use the signs in the train station to navigate to the subway entrance or above ground to the taxi queue.

How to Get from Newark to Manhattan by Train – (Lower Manhattan)

If you’re staying at a hotel in Lower Manhattan or even somewhere in Brooklyn, Hoboken, or Jersey City, it makes sense to make a slight change to the above train directions.

As above, take the AirTrain to the Newark Liberty Airport Station. But instead of taking a New Jersey Transit train to New York Penn Station, get off at Newark Penn Station.

From here, you can connect to the PATH train , which are underground trains like NYC’s subway lines, only PATH trains run from New Jersey into Lower Manhattan. PATH trains run 24/7 every day but expect slightly less frequent train service overnight.

The PATH train from Newark Penn Station will take you through Jersey City and to the World Trade Center in Manhattan’s Financial District. You can get to your neighborhood hotel on foot or by taxi. Or connect to the subway for faster access to hotels in Downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Alternatively, you could switch from the World Trade Center PATH train at Journal Square to the 33rd Street PATH train for access to Newport (part of Jersey City) and points in Greenwich Village.

Finally, in case you’re headed to a hotel in Hoboken, you would switch from the World Trade Center PATH train at Exchange Place to the Hoboken PATH train.

Adults will pay just $11.25 for the AirTrain/New Jersey Transit combo to Newark Penn Station. Children, seniors, and military members will pay just $9.60. The PATH train costs an additional $2.75, for a total one-way to Lower Manhattan for only $14.

Bottom Line: Taking the Train from Newark to Manhattan

The train from Newark Airport to NYC is the cheapest and fastest way to transfer from the airport. The trains run nearly all the time and are conveniently accessible from all of Newark’s airline terminals. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also save time by avoiding the perpetual heavy traffic on the roads to New York. When considering travel from Newark to Manhattan by train, think about your luggage. The steps above are easily managed with a rolling suitcase or a single bag. However traveling with oversized bags or a lot of luggage can make using public transportation a challenge.

Getting from Manhattan to Newark Airport

All of the above transportation options can also get you from NYC to Newark Airport at the end of your trip. It’s worth it to compare one-way and round-trip ticket prices to see if there’s a benefit to buying one over the other.

Yellow taxis from NYC will take passengers to Newark Airport. Some will try to set a flat rate similar to the flat rate price set by NYC for rides to JFK . Don’t accept. They’re legally supposed to use the meter.

Per NYC taxi guidelines, trips to Newark Airport from New York City are metered fares. You’ll have to also pay for the round trip tolls, a $20 surcharge, and tip your driver for good service.

Remember, any transportation relying on the roads is at the mercy of the traffic. Depending on your flight time, be prepared and allow for plenty of extra time so you don’t miss your flight sitting in traffic.

Thank you, this was super helpful, and it was ranked #1 on the google search. I’m arriving @ 4, so traffic could be bad. My past experience with the train is that it’s somewhat a pain, with all the transfers & walking. A fun adventure, but time consuming.

Thanks for reading, Jennifer. Arriving at 4pm is tough…lots of traffic. I’d highly recommend giving the train another try if you want to avoid rush hour. Enjoy NYC!

Hi, so if you are renting a car in the Princeton area and driving in to NYC is there one way that is better than another in terms of tunnels? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for reading, Francesca. The Holland Tunnel will bring you downtown to lower Manhattan. The Lincoln Tunnel will bring you into Midtown, near the theater district and Times Square. Depending on where you’re staying or visiting, one might make more sense. However, I recommend using an app like Waze to determine traffic and your best driving route. Waze will be able to detect if one tunnel is jammed or has an accident or something and try to reroute you. Enjoy your time in NYC!

first of all: thank you for this clear post, really very helpfull!

We are coming to NYC for the first time of our lives this May,

We are arriving on a sunday coming in from Amsterdam and landing at 11:35 AM and we are still looking for the best way to get to manhattan (Amsterdam Court Hotel on 50th street).

We first thought about booking the shuttle service, but the reviews online are really bad…

The express busses also don’t come out very good on tripadvisor etc.

For first-time visitors… would you recomend the Airtrain and NJ transit to New York Penn and then take subway 1 up to 50th street?

We both will have a small backpack and a suitcase on wheels, so that would be manageable, but how crowded are the trains / subways on a random sunday afternoon?

We fly back on thursday at 5:35 PM and expect to head back to EWR also around midday.

Hope to hear from you, and thank you in advance!

Thanks for reading, Rene, and congrats on your first trip to NYC! The public transportation option via NJ Transit to Penn Station is really straightforward. You’ll be able to connect underground to the 1 subway easily underground from Penn Station to 50th St. Your luggage seems very manageable for the subway, just remember there will be some stairs to climb from the trains at Penn Station to the subway. It’s hard to say about how crowded the trains will be but weekends can be busy because tourists replace weekday commuters. It shouldn’t be so much though that you can’t get on the subway with your bags. Good luck and have a great trip to NYC. 🙂

Hi great article, I have a 6 hour stop over in Newark on Friday arriving at 16:30 and departing at 22:30, as I have never been NYC can you recommend a way to get a quick look around thanks.

Thanks for reading, Danny. In all honesty, it’s really not enough time to safely get in and out and make it back through security at EWR. If you decide to give it a try anyways, public transportation all the way. At 16:30, you will hit the evening rush hour and easily spend over an hour in a taxi or vehicle.

Hi, Two senior adults flying into Newark International on May 30, arriving at 6pm; staying at the Hyatt Place on W. 36th; flying out of Newark on June 4 at 7pm. Suggestions for transportation to/from airport/hotel.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for reading, Shirley. Depending on how comfortable you feel and your luggage, the public transportation option could be worth it because you’re arriving and departing within the 4-7pm window of the evening commute for people. Otherwise, I’d recommend booking a shuttle . It’ll help you avoid any possible stress with taking public transportation and will cost less than a taxi which could add up if you’re sitting in traffic.

Great article thank you! I’ve been to NYC a few times but never into Newark. Coming from the UK and arriving at 2pm in November with a 7 year old and my partner do you think the train or Go link shuttle would be best? We will have 3 cases likely as well. Thanks !

Thanks for reading, Dave. The train should be easy enough with a 7-year-old. I’d just consider the size of those 3 cases as there will be some stairs to navigate and station corridors to walk through. Also, depending on the location of your hotel, you’ll need to get a taxi from NYC’s Penn Station. The taxi line is at street level and the station is below ground. Go Airlink is door-to-door so it eliminates this need for a taxi altogether. I hope that helps and you have a great trip to NYC! 🙂

Thank you for your article! I and my family (3) are arriving at Newark airport at 3pm and leaving on the day after at 8.30am. I am looking for an hotel near the airport and then go for a tour in nyc, since is our first time there. What you consider to be the best hotel nearby the airport, with quick access to bus or train? Thank you in advance Jose

Thanks for reading, Jose! Even with such a short time, I would encourage you to stay not directly near the airport. The area closest to EWR isn’t that great. Jersey City is a better option, especially a hotel like Hyatt House . It’s just 10 miles from Newark Airport and has the PATH train right next to it which can bring you into lower Manhattan in just minutes. Even if you changed your mind about getting into NYC, Jersey City has more in the way of restaurants and great views of Manhattan from the piers. Have a great time on your travels! 🙂

I think I’ve made the mistake before of choosing the PATH when I actually meant to choose the subway to go into NYC. How do I not make that mistake again? Also, can the unlimited weekly passes be used between NJ and NY if using the subway? The last time I tried this I ended up having 2 different cards. One for the PATH and one for the subway in NY. Thanks!

Thanks for reading, Joy. Make sure to look and follow the signs for New York Penn Station. Not Penn Station on the Jersey side. Yes, you can use a MetroCard for both the PATH Train and the NYC subway. But you will need to buy tickets for the NJ Transit train.

Thank you for the article, very helpful for us. My daughter and I have a long layover in Newark Airport from 10 AM to 6 PM this Saturday. We would like to see the Brooklyn Bridge and Park for a short time so see the skyline of NYC. What is the easiest stop from Penn station you recommend? High st or Borough Hall? We don’t plan of staying long, just don’t want to be in the airport doing nothing until our next flight. You think we have enough time? We don’t mind the longer time in the public transportation versus the time we will have in NYC. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for reading, Claire. I’m afraid I might be a bit too late for your trip to the Brooklyn Bridge. (I was traveling in Africa off the grid.) If not, I would recommend, High St. Time will be tight so any delay could make it not worth it. Good luck!

Just FYI for travelers trying to decide which transport to use to and from Newark and Manhattan: just this week I paid a taxi $110 to take me from the Upper West Side to Newark. That includes the toll(s), tip, and any other fees or applicable taxes. I researched cheaper alternatives while away, and planned to take the train back. Unfortunately, my flight was weather delayed and I did not arrive in Newark until 10:30 PM. Not wanting to try the train this late at night — I knew I wouldn’t get home until 11:30 or later — I called Dial 7 and scheduled a car. Much more comfortable than a taxi, total cost $100. I could have bought another plane ticket for what I paid in transfer fees! Definitely the train next time.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Jamie. And sorry to hear about your experience! Public transportation or shared transport like Go Airlink are truly the best ways to save money and time when transferring between Newark and Manhattan.

Great article. I am going to Mahattan to meet my son alone on Friday arrival at 1:30pm, I decided to take the train option to Mahattan, it sound easy and time saving. The Go Airlink shuttle sounds perfect, but has very bad reviews.

My husband went on Sunday with my son and take a taxi, it cost them $90 to arrive their destination. and the taxi driver seems not familiar with the street and go extra miles, may be they look very tourist. It also charge surcharge with credit card payment because they don’t trust the $100 dollar bill my husband gave them.

Thanks for reading, Susana. The train is a great way to go. Unfortunately, taxi scams can happen. But it’s also not uncommon for a car service or taxi to cost upwards to $100 from Newark to Manhattan. Good luck with the train! 🙂

travel from nyc to ewr

I appreciate your article, i am arriving on a Friday about 3 pm, you mention stairs with the train option – any other details on these, I will have 2 rolling luggage pieces, will this be doable or a PITA for others on the train

Thanks for reading, Scott. The airport, of course, will have escalators and elevators. But once you’re moving in between the Airtrain and the NJ Transit stations there are corridors and flights of stairs you may have to get up or down depending on the track where the trains are. 2 Rolling pieces will be a bit of a pain but it’s certainly not impossible. However, the day and time you arrive will be busy in the NJ Transit terminal so expect plenty of people moving in all directions. If you decide to skip this, I’d recommend Go Airlink because the traffic at that time could drive up the costs of a taxi. Good luck! 🙂

Exactly what I was looking for – very informative! Regarding your tip to use the NJ Transit app, the iOS app gets scathing reviews. People complain it’s very buggy and unforgiving. Tourists may want to stick to regular paper tickets.

Thanks for reading, Tyrone. Appreciate the tip on the IOS app, too. 🙂

Thank you so much for your guide! I am a midwest girl who has never gone to a big city like this so I am crazy nervous! My son and I are going to Manhattan next week from 7/18-7/20. We get in around 9:30am on Thursday and left at 5:30pm on Saturday. Will the train be busy when we arrive if we choose to go that route? We want to do a little bit of sightseeing on Saturday before we leave, but don’t know how much time we should plan for getting back to Newark. What time do you think we should we leave Manhattan to make our 5:30pm flight on Saturday? Thank you for your help!!

Thanks for reading, Sarah. 🙂 The train could be a little busy but the good thing is you’ll miss rush hour that morning. For your return, I’d give yourselves an hour and a half, so leaving NYC by 2 pm. If you take the train back, check the schedules to see the best option given this timing. If you plan to take a taxi or shuttle, extra time never hurts. You’ll need to go through a tunnel or over a bridge to get back to NJ and sometimes these can be traffic nightmares. Enjoy NYC!!!

Hello Jackie! thank you very much for your guides! I’m arriving to the Newark airport soon and I would like to know if the train station is right at the airport for me to do it straight to Bronx or Manhattan and around how much would it cost. Thank in advance.

Thanks for reading, Laila. The AirTrain to NJ Transit is right at the airport. You just follow signs first to the AirTrain. You will need to connect to the NJ Transit train going to NEW YORK Penn Station. This should be $12.50. Once at Penn Station in Manhattan, you can access the subway. Not sure where you’re heading in the Bronx but the #2 subway train uptown from Penn Station may be able to help you. 🙂

Great information Jackie! Thank you for posting! My BF and I are headed to New York in September (from Ontario) for the first time! Both very very excited and hope to be able to navigate the subway system without looking too much like a tourist. haha. Have to ask—what is the MUST do in NYC? I know there are about a million things to do, but what is one of your favs?

Hi Tiffany!

So thrilled you have plans to visit in Sept. Typically, you get ideal weather! BUT it is weather so you never know!

The subway system is the BEST way to get around along with walking depending on where you’re going.

Some musts..

Central Park Stroll the Brooklyn Bridge Greenwich Village stroll – add in pizza tour. Go to Artichoke Pizza!! Times Square – need to see it but it can get crowded While in Times Square, head to a broadway show! The MET & Museum of Natural History The 9/11 museum Take a bike ride along the Hudson River

There’s is so much to do! I’d consider the NYC City Pass (see below) if you’re looking to hit a bunch of the sites. Either way, you’ll have a blast!

Mobility issues. Arrive EWR on Sunday, 9/22. My wife will have a wheelchair from the gate.to transportation. We are staying at the Park Meridian on 56th. We will have two carry-ons and one large bag. She uses a cane, but can do some walking. Seems like the Shuttle might be the best bet for door to door service at the best rate . . . plus, it can be reserved in advance. Do you agree? What is the normal rate for two? Thanks for the advise.

Thanks for reading, Doug. Yes, the shuttle will be the best option in terms of a door-to-door and affordability combination. And yes, you can absolutely book it in advance. The best way to check prices is to check at Go Airlink NYC for a quote. But, it’ll likely be (at least) half of what a car service or taxi would charge. Have a great time in NYC! 🙂

Dear Jackie

Thanks again, and enjoy your travels, I will look out for your pro tip travel guides! 🙂

Thanks so much for reading, Warren! Appreciate your kind words. And, I agree…us NYers are always happy to help travelers navigate the public transportation system. 😉 Happy Travels!

Hi Jackie, great article. We’ll be arriving (two of us) on Tuesday 1pm to Newark – need to get to Manhattan. 1 suitcase and 1 rolling carry-on each. The address where we stay is not so easy to get to from the Penn station (without suitcases I’d say no problem)… but I’m a bit worried about the suitcases. So I thought the Go Airlink NYC would be a better option. I checked on the website – quote to the hotel is $20. Then I saw that tax and toll not included… I asked about it using the chat option and the lady said it will come out to be about $35/person total… so 2 people = $70 and that’s getting up there to the level of how much an uber would cost…

So, while I love your recommendation about the shuttle… please mention also that it’s not really only $20/person… it’s $20+tax+toll/person. And funny, that each person will pay for the toll as if they went all by themselves… or am I not understanding how this works correctly?

Thanks for reading, Jaro. I think the woman you spoke with is mistaken. Tax and tolls are included. I didn’t know your hotel but just as an example, I went to the Go Airlink NYC website and priced it out. I have 2 screenshots that show what it looked like if I arrived into Newark and went to a hotel in Manhattan. As you can see the first one says tax and tolls included. This reflects in the grand total on the final checkout page. I’m so sorry you were given the wrong info! Hope this helps.

Great article! So helpful! I am trying to figure out the least stressful way from Newark to Grand Central Station for my husband not using a taxi or uber. He will arrive in Newark terminal C at 10;40pm on Monday. He will have a standard suitcase and briefcase. We would like to purchase round trip ground transportation online so he doesn’t have to pay at the airport, He will leave on 8/29 for an 8pm flight back to chicago. Any suggestions?

Thanks for reading, Marilee. 🙂 I would look at the shuttle or car service through Go Airlink NYC. You can reserve online and pay in advance. You can book a round trip and get door-to-door service from the airport to the hotel and back.

Hi Jackie Great Article, Really helpful! We are trying to figure out the best way to get from Newark to Astoria Queens.Have been to New York few times before so am familiar with the subway etc.. but this will the first time with a toddler! It will be myself, partner and 2 year old in a pushchair. Would the train & subway option be doable with the pushchair or should we look into the shared shuttle/Uber options. Any help would be great.Tia

Thanks for reading, Shane. I’d say if you’re familiar with the NYC subway, you should be fine. Everyday NYers use the subways all the time with strollers, kids scooters, etc. And, arriving into New York Penn Station and transferring to the subway will be easy. You likely need the N or Q trains which you can get by taking the 1,2 or 3 trains 1 stop uptown to Times Square and switching to the N or Q to Astoria. Good luck! 🙂

travel from nyc to ewr

Great article. We should have taken the train. Do not take the Go Airlink. We chose to do this and it was horrible. We made reservations but still had to wait over an hour and a half for a shuttle. They were rude and unorganized. We will take the train system back to the airport!!

I’m so sorry to hear that, Ronit! I haven’t had that experience at all with Go Airlink NYC and recommend them to my own family and friends (as well as to my readers) who also have had only positive experiences. I encourage you to reach out to Go Airlink to explain what happened with their customer support.

Hi, thank you for your helpful article! I am a fellow teacher :). I live in Harlem and have a flight out of Newark in October at 6:00 AM :/. Would you suggest the AirTrain or just booking a shuttle? Thanks!

Thanks for reading, Jenny! I’d go for the shuttle at that time of the day. Public transportation could be a bit slow to get you there by 4am for a 6am flight. Hope you have great travels. 🙂

Many thanks, Jackie, your article is super informative. Looks like the shuttle for me from Newark to Manhattan.

Thanks for reading, Robin. Glad the post was helpful. Enjoy NYC! 🙂

Jackie, reading your posting again, does it mean that the total cost of the air train PLUS the train from Newark to Penn Station is $12.50?

Hi Robin, yes. It would be $12.50 to New York Penn Station. The cost of the Airtrain ticket is included when you purchase the NJ Transit ticket to NYC. 🙂

So, we will be traveling into Newark Airport arriving at 12:20pm . We are coming in the same day as the Tree Lighting Show in Rockefeller Center. Would it be a good idea to take the train that day, I expect there might be a lot of traffic because of the show? We have to be at the Rock before 3pm I think, before they close for foot traffic. Any advice appreciated. FYI, our hotel is just a few blocks from the Rock, so would still have some travel from Penn Station to the hotel to deal with if we take the train.

Thanks for reading, Kim. Yes, without a doubt, take the train. This is one of the busiest traffic days in and around NYC so avoid the roads at all costs. From Penn Station, I would take the subway to your hotel. Normally, the taxi ride from Penn Station would be quick but on this day, midtown Manhattan can be snarled because of the traffic and road closures. From Penn Station, there is direct subway access so you wouldn’t need to even go above ground with your luggage. The 1, 2, or 3 train will help you get close to your hotel. If you respond, I’m happy to give you more specific subway directions to your hotel. Good luck!

Jackie, this was VERY helpful! We are arriving at EWR at 10:00 am on a Thursday & like some others, staying at the Hyatt Place on 36th Street. Departing out of EWR on Sunday at 9:50 pm. We have a party of 5 (2 adults, 2 teens & a 10 yr old). Is Uber our best bet due to the size of our family?

Thanks for reading, Jennifer. Yes, an Uber will be your best bet for a large group. It’ll likely be cheaper than paying for train tickets for everyone and you’ll get door to door service. 🙂

Hi there… we are arriving at Newark at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, October 1. I like the idea of public transit, but it does seem a bit tricky — I’m most concerned is where to get off in Manhattan… we are staying in the east village. Wondering if it will be ok fto be walking from train station in Manhattan to East Village 4th street between 1st and 2nd avenue — my guess is that it will be close to 7 or 8 pm based on your description. Would you suggest an alternative

Thanks for reading, Lita. 🙂 You will take the NJ Transit Train all the way to New York Penn Station. This is the last stop on the train. From there to the East Village, I recommend taking a taxi or an Uber. That neighborhood is not walkable with luggage, etc. I do think public transportation is the best option. Once you get to Penn Station in New York City, go up to the street level to the taxi queue. Good luck!

Hi, great article! Just returned from Korea and loved their public transportation. We are arriving on a monday to Newark at 8 am and headed to Hilton Midtown. My husband who is a retired 23 yr. veteran has never been! Korea was a return to the DMZ where he was stationed. We will be there for 3 full days. Best way to go in your opinion? Any extra ideas you can provide? See a show? Thank you in advanced! Jenn

Thanks for reading, Jennifer. What a great trip that must have been to Korea…and now NYC! Given your arrival time on a Monday morning, I highly recommend public transportation from Newark. Given your midtown location, you can easily take a quick taxi ride from New York Penn Station once you arrive in Manhattan or if you’d like, take the subway (#1 train line) up 1-2 stops toward Times Square depending on which Hilton you’re staying. I have several guides on the blog about NYC like this one for first-timers and even a mega list of 100 things to do . I would definitely plan to see a show, though. Just remember, Broadway is closed on Monday nights. So plan for Tuesday or Wednesday. Hope you have a great trip to NYC! 🙂

Thank you Jackie for a great article! You have skills to explain somehow complicated things on a very understandable and clear way. After reading dozens of other articles about the subject I was still confused regarding the alternatives but only your writing helped me to see the point and to make the final decision.

We have a family of six persons and we will arrive to Newark during early Friday evening. Express coach has got super bad reviews from many travellers. We cannot fit into one yellow taxi and two of them would be ridiculously expensive. I have researched some private van options but they have also some risks (heavy traffic, delayed flight, unclear agreement, not positive reviews, etc.). So, we choose train this time although we usually prefer easy door-to-door options.

Looking forward to see mighty Big Apple soon. Thank you Jackie!

Thanks for reading, Pekka. Enjoy NYC!

Good article! I’ll visit Your nice airport first time on tuesday next week by transit. Arrival 11:40AM; Departure 5:40PM. Can You be so kind to advise me some interesting places to see during this “pit-stop” and the best kinds of transport for it. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for reading, Antoxa. Given that you only have a few hours, I wouldn’t recommend leaving the airport. Once you leave the airport, you have to factor in time to go back through security, not to mention round trip transit time on public transportation. Best to find an airport lounge to relax in.

Hi Jackie! Thanks for the helpful article. Party of 4 adults arriving at EWR on a Saturday at 11am and departing flight is the following Tuesday at 7pm. Can do stairs, but hoping not to climb a lot of them. Is the train the best bet to our hotel, which is Midtown on W 35th Street, or do you have other suggestion like Uber? Also, what time do you suggest departing for the airport for the return flight? When looking at GoLink the recommended pickup time is 2:30pm. I don’t want to leave that early for a 7p flight.

Thanks for reading, TB. The train is a great option because it will be cheaper than an Uber. However, on a Saturday morning, the traffic should be light(er) than a weekday so it could be faster than the train in this case. For your return, I would definitely take the train. Go Airlink is suggesting that early departure time no doubt due to commuter traffic. It can easily take 2 hours from Manhattan to Newark during the afternoon/evening rush. The train for the return is your best bet to maximize your time in NYC and get back to EWR without traffic headaches.

This is so helpful. I get so stressed transferring from airports to destination! Go Airlink NYC seem like a good option but they do have terrible reviews here and on TripAdvisor which is putting me off. Maybe the AirTrain? I arrive into Newark but then fly out from JFK. Are transport options into both airports similar? Staying at the Empire at the corner of Broadway/Sesame Street.

Thanks for reading, Kathryn. Both JFK and Newark have public transportation options. I’ve linked to my JFK guide here. Both public transportation options from these airports will require an additional subway ride uptown along the #1 subway train, which you can easily get at or take to 34th street/Penn Station. For what it’s worth, Go Airlink NYC is what my own family uses when they visit and have had positive experiences.

Jackie thank you for the great article.

What I would like to do is drive from Ohio and catch some public transit to Mahattan from Newark area.

Can I simply park my car somewhere and get public trans without being at the airport in Newark?

Thanks for reading, Paul and sorry for the delayed response. There are long-term parking options in and around the airport that will be your best best. I have a guide about finding cheap airport parking that I hope you’ll find helpful.

Thank you so much for this article. I am traveling to NYC for the first time in April 2020. I haven’t booked my tickets yet, but while I’ve been looking flying from WA state seems to be cheaper to Newark than JFK or LaGuardia. I was nervous because I’ve never been to the east coast and had not idea what to expect. Reading this calmed my nerves and will use the train if I book through Newark. Cheers!

Thanks for reading, Stephanie! I’m glad the guide will be useful for your trip.

I am coming to Newark Sat the 9 th at 6 pm to attend a concert which starts Sun at 6.30 pm. Have to depart Newark Mon around noon. What are my options to go to Manhattan & come back in between . Thank you for your help.

Thanks for reading, Sudath. Public Transportation will be a great option, as will Go Airlink Shuttle. The shuttle is door-to-door service so if you don’t want to carry luggage onto the train or your hotel isn’t near Penn Station or a subway, this could be the best option.

Hi Jackie, LOVE your post, very informative! My husband and I will arrive into Newark airport on a Wednesday @ 3:30 pm and are staying at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. We each will have a large rolling suitcase and a backpack. Would you recommend the train and subway? We have no problem with public transit, I actually take the train and subway system in Los Angeles every day. My concern is whether or not there will be room for luggage on the train.

Thanks in advance! Kat

Thanks for reading and for the kind words, Kat. 🙂 It shouldn’t be a problem at all to have your luggage on the train. Depending on the subway, it could be a little tight but people do it all the time…including NYers with strollers, bikes, grocery carts, etc. Not sure which, Wednesday you’re arriving, but if it happens to be the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, absolutely use the public transportation systems. Traffic on the road will be horrendous. Enjoy NYC!

How convenient is to arrive at EWR than JFK or LaGuardia? My husband does not want to fly into New Jersey cause he says is going to be a pain to get into Manhattan. Is he right?

Thanks in advance for your insight

Thanks for reading, Laura. In all honesty, if you take public transportation, it’ll take relatively the same time to get from EWR or JFK into Manhattan. If you’re looking at a shuttle or a taxi, it all hinges on the traffic. Newark and JFK are both about 15 miles from Times Square. From both airports, it can take an hour or more depending how heavy the traffic is. (It can also be super quick if you arrive really late or really early) LGA is geographically the closest airport to Manhattan. However, the public transportation options involve city buses which connect to the subway into Manhattan, not direct train options like the other two airports. If it were me, I’d go for the best airfare deal. Then, depending on your time of arrival, budget, number of bags, etc.. make a decision about whether to get to Manhattan by public transportation, shuttle, or taxi/car service. Hope that helps. 🙂

Hey Jackie, thanks for such an informative article. I have my first trip to NYC in a couple of weeks time and really looking forward to it! Just wondering what you’d recommend for a late night arrival. I get into EWR about 9:30 on a Sunday night and my hotel is in Manhattan. I will have been flying / in transit for the better part of 24 hours by that stage so I’m keen to get to my hotel as quick as possible. I was going to book the shuttle but given everyone has such mixed reviews I’m more inclined to take the train now. Just wondering what your experience has been on the trains/public transport at night? Is it safe?

Thanks so much for reading, Caz. I’ve always felt safe riding the trains and subways at night and never had a problem. There are always some other people. I did a quick look and the trains appear to run on the :04 and the :15 on Sunday nights. So, if you caught the 10:04, it would be just 28 minutes into New York Penn Station. Good luck and have a great first trip to NYC!

Great Article! I’m not sure what this difference is between the PATH train and the NJ Transit train? You talk about taking the AirTrain to the NJ Transit train but elsewhere you talk about the PATH train– is that an option or is that only if you are somewhere near a PATH station? The example was staying at the Hyatt House and using the PATH train… Thanks! Stuart

Thanks for reading, Stuart, and apologies for any confusion. The NJ Transit trains are the regional trains in New Jersey that can connect riders to Manhattan’s Penn Station. The PATH train is like a subway train that goes to Jersey City, Newark, and Hoboken and brings riders into Manhattan. It even makes stops along Manhattan’s west side just like a subway. If you are staying at the Hyatt House in Jersey City, you would take the AirTrain to Newark Penn Station and connect to the PATH train towards Manhattan and get off at Exchange Place. Exchange Place is the last stop on the NJ side of the Hudson before you get to the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. Hope that clears everything up! 🙂

We will be flying in to the Newark airport on January 23rd arriving at 10:55 p.m. our hotel in NYC is at Central Park South. Our flight out is at 10:30 a.m. January 28th. We are 79 and 75 years of age and will have 1 wheeled duffel and 2 wheeled carry-ons. We travel to Europe every summer and always take the RER in Paris to and from the airport with no problem. For some reason I am hesitant to do the train in our own country! What do you suggest given our arrival and departure times?

Thanks so much for reading, Gay. If you’ve taken the RER in Paris to and from the airport, you can totally do the train from Newark. But, given the time you arrive on 1/23, I recommend going with the shuttle or a taxi/car service. While you should be fine (I’ve traveled much later from JFK to Manhattan by myself), platforms can be quieter at night and trains run a little less frequently. For the return trip on Jan 28, absolutely do the train. It’s a weekday and you’ll want to avoid traffic at the time of the morning. Take a taxi from your hotel to New York Penn Station on W. 34th St. and do the train instructions in the post in reverse. I hope that helps and you have a great trip to NYC.

Hi Jackie, I’m going to NYC next month and I plan to use the train from Newark to Manhattan. I can see you recommend NJ Transit trains but some other websites recommend PATH. Can you tell me the difference? We’re staying in the Times Square area so I guess we’ll just walk there from Penn Station. Thanks. Paula

Thanks for reading, Paula. PATH Trains are similar to subway trains and even go into Manhattan and run underground and make stops in the city. The NJ Transit trains are regional trains similar to those you’d find in many suburban areas that are close to a city. In terms of your travel, the PATH train would be a good choice if your hotel was in the World Trade Center area. Since yours is in Times Square, it makes the most sense to do the NJ Transit Trains because Penn Station is much closer to where you’re staying. Hope that helps and you have a great NYC trip!

This is very detailed going from Newark to NYC but for getting to Newark from NYC it just says to take the directions backwards. Am I missing something? Is there a nice step by step from the city to Newark Airport?

Thanks for reading, Lori. There’s not a step by step for the return but it’s exactly the same as going. If you’ve used public transportation, take the NJ Transit trains back to Newark and then transfer to the Airtrain for the terminal you need.

Don’t use airlink shuttle if arriving late at night- like 11 p.m. I did on-line prepaid with all info. Rec’d regular updates as soon as we arrived. Waited at transportation desk— helpful man there asked which service we were waiting on. When I said airlink shuttle, he shook his head and said they were very unreliable for late arrivals and he would check with dispatch. Put on hold for several minutes and at 11:30 dispatch said it would be 30 minutes as they were at office. We then signed up for UBER who arrived in 5 minutes and we were at hotel by 12:15 a.m. airlink driver called at 12 and said he was there! Will never do that again— UBER only cost $6 more. Airlink shuttle did give us a refund.

Thanks for your feedback, Gay. I’m sorry to hear you had this experience but glad to hear Go Airlink refunded your money. One important thing to note, many Uber drivers stay close to the airports, especially late at night because they’re more likely to book a ride so I’m not surprised it took just 5 minutes for the driver to arrive. Glad it all worked out in the end.

We did the New Jersey transit train for our return to Newark airport. As you said, it was easy. We downloaded app and bought our tickets. Had Uber take us from our hotel to 7th Avenue and 31st Street where the NJ transit entrance was and plenty of signs plus helpful people got us to the right track. There was only one set of stairs (maybe 10 steps) to carry luggage up or down—- all the rest was navigated by escalators and elevators. Our flight was at 10:30 a.m. Uber picked us up at hotel by Central Park at 7:15 and with that ride and train, we were at concourse B at 8:30! Airlink shuttle pick up time was 6:30 a.m. ! Thanks for your help!

Glad it worked out, Gay. Hope you had a great NYC trip.

Hi Jackie, thanks for writing such a helpful article! I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me with. We have 2 adults and 2 teens arriving at Newark around 12:30 on 3/21, and catching a flight out of JFK at 8:30 the same night. Our plan is to travel from Newark into the city, grab some lunch and maybe site-see or a museum, then head to JFK. We’ve been to NYC before and used public transport, but not super familiar with either.

Can you recommend an area for our in-between stop that would be convenient to get to from Newark, and also be an easy place to leave from when its time for us to head to JFK? And with 4 travelers, is the train our best option price-wise and time-wise, or would an uber save us money and/or time? How much time do you recommend we plan for getting from Newsrk into the City, and from the City to JFK?

Thanks for reading, Cat. Since you’ll be in NYC on a Friday, I’d suggest avoiding Ubers/taxis and going with trains. It’ll take about 45 minutes to get from Newark to New York Penn Station and about 50-60 minutes to get from New York Penn Station to JFK. (Here’s my JFK guide if you need it) Penn Station is on W. 34 Street in between 7th & 8th Aves. I’d stay in this area. You are within walking distance to Macy’s, Herald Square, and the Empire State Building, and not far from Hudson Yards and where the High Line begins. If you make it up to 42nd Street, you’d be near Grand Central Station, Bryant Park, and Times Square. Hope that helps and you can make the most of your time in NYCC.

Thanks! Love the suggestion for the highline – that will be just the exercise we need between 2 long flights! Now just have to hope the weather cooperates!!!!

Fantastic, Cat! Enjoy your travels. 🙂 Thank you again for reading the blog.

Hi! Have a question!! My husband has mobility issues and can’t walk very far but this is what we would like to do: We would like to spend a full day touring in NYC. I would like to do the Big Bus Tour which includes the Circle Line Cruise. I would like to stay in New Jersey somewhere and take a train in to access the Big Bus. Can you give us any guidance? Having access to a wheelchair would be great if we have to walk any distances but I don’t know how to handle that either. Please help! 🙂

Thanks for reading, Jolene. Ok, given what you’ve told me, I’d take a look at Lincoln Harbor in New Jersey. There’s a Sheraton right at the ferry dock to NYC. The ferry will take you directly across the Hudson River to the ferry terminals. This is also where the Big Bus Tours and Circle Line Cruises have a stop and/or begin. This would be the smoothest option without stairs or any extensive walking. As for access to a wheelchair, unless you rented one at a local pharmacy (nearby Hoboken, NJ has mom & pop pharmacies that do this), I’m not sure. Hopefully, though, the Lincoln Harbor hotel is the right fit!

Hello, great article, there is something I would like to ask you please: we are leaving from EWR at around 06AM (3/19/2020) therefore I was looking for public transport connection as I do prefer it instead of just taking a cab. However, I found out that NJTransit train is not available from 2AM till 5AM (leaving from Penn Station). Can you confirm this information please? So I would just leave from Penn station after midnight I guess. I am not worried about AirTrain from Newark Liberty Airport Station as those are running 24/7 I read. If you can, please leave a comment regarding the window in service from 2AM till 5AM. Thank you

Thanks for reading, Petr. After checking the NJ Transit schedule, I am seeing the same. No trains from about 2 am until 4:17 am.

Jackie, Need help deciding between the train or the AirLink. Our destination is Penn Station as we are taking Amtrak to Connecticut. We are scheduled to land in Newark at 8:00 am on a Thursday. We are 3 elderly women who are used to travel but can’t walk too far or too fast. I have read the train is the NJ Transit and may be crowded and/or not have room for luggage. We will each have a medium size suitcase plus a smaller carry on type bag. Would love hearing your opinion. Thanks

Hi Suzan, Thanks for reading and so sorry for the late reply! Your comment ended up in spam. 🙁

I’d say you’ll be fine on NJ Transit because the region is still just opening and many people aren’t yet back to their normal commutes. Trains aren’t as crowded as they once were…at least yet. Check the train schedules, too. There have been changes because of the shutdown. Safe travels and apologies again for this last-minute reply.

Hi, Jackie , this is a well written article, providing in-depth detail. I have a quick question. I will be arriving in EWR airport in a couple of days at 10 pm. Would this be too late to take the train and if so what would be the next best option. I also see your notation that the Shared shuttle service is suspended. …Thanks

Thanks so much for reading, Garry. 10 pm isn’t too late for the train. I’ve done train rides in the past between 9 and 11 pm from EWR and have never had a problem. The schedule shows 2 trains in the 10 o’clock hour and another train just past 11 pm. The next best option would be to book a private transfer either with GoAirlink or Carmel . Taxis coming from EWR can be expensive because there is no flat rate, whereas by booking a car you’ll know the cost ahead of time. You’d think there would be no traffic at 10 pm but in NYC you never know! Hope that helps and you have a great trip!

This site is outstanding. I read several different online guides on travel from Newark airport to Manhattan, and this one provides the best advice. About 4 decades ago I lived in West Orange and commuted to NYC via the Path trains from Newark. All the advice about using trains to avoid horrendous road traffic is spot-on. My question is about personal safety. I was assaulted on the Path train and it took the cops over an hour to arrive. I assume the trains have been cleaned up considerably and no longer attract undesirable people. Should travel with people that can be trusted be considered in these options?

Thank you for reading, Ken. I’m so sorry to hear about your experience years ago. I can only speak for myself, a female who has lived in New York City and Hoboken for the past 20+ years. I’ve never had any problems on the PATH trains or subway trains. Compared to 4 decades ago, crime rates are way down and the NYC subways and PATH trains have been cleaned up considerably. I’ve taken trains at all times of the day and night depending on when my flights have arrived and have never felt unsafe. However, I can only speak to my experience. If you are concerned about safety, perhaps it is better for you to consider a pre-booked private transfer instead.

Your post was so helpful!

Thanks for reading, Juliann. I’m sorry to hear about your troubles with the Express Bus. It will be great once companies like GoAirlink can resume shared rides. It really split the difference between taxis and public transportation.
