Tesco is a well-known British retailer that offers foreign currency exchange for travel money, which you can pick up at their stores or have it delivered to you.

Understanding Tesco exchange rates is important for anyone who is planning to travel abroad because they do not often offer the best rates. In this article, you'll see how to find the Tesco exchange rate and how to calculate the hidden fees.

We also provide a list of some of the best Tesco alternatives, such as Starling Bank , Revolut and Wise , that exist in 2023.

Our highlights for the best travel money exchange rates:

  • Revolut : Get a starling and euro account, plus hold and exchange over 30 foreign currencies with no fees for the first £1,000 per month exchange during the week. | Read our Revolut review .
  • Starling Bank : Get a free GBP and EUR bank account and access both currencies with the Starling debit card, which waives all foreign transaction fees and charges no ATM fees. | Read our Starling Bank review .

What is the Tesco Exchange Rate in 2023?

The most important thing to note as a Tesco customer is that their exchange rates are always weaker than the real mid-market rate . This is also known as the spread. Exchange rate margins are used by Tesco to cover their costs and make a profit.

We recorded the Tesco exchange rate on their website from the British Pound to the Euro at 9:25 on 14 September 2023 . For example, if you had exchanged £1,000 at the mid-market rate, you would have gotten around €1,162. With Tesco, you get only €1,136.

  • Real Mid-Market Exchange Rate: £1 = 1.162 EUR
  • Tesco Exchange Rate: £1 = 1.1364 EUR

Due to the hidden exchange rate margin fee in this example, you would lose £26 to Tesco if you exchanged £1,000 for Euros:

  • Hidden Exchange Rate Margin Fee: £26

While mid-market exchange rates are subject to fluctuate constantly from second to second, be aware that the Tesco exchange rate will fluctuate along with it at a weaker rate.

Compare the Tesco Exchange Rate in 2023

In the graph below, we compare several travel money exchangers across the UK. See how Tesco's rates compare against other providers.

You'll notice that many providers advertise themselves as commission-free. However, commissions are not the only important factor to take into account when finding the best deal. The hidden exchange rate margin, card surcharges, and cash delivery fees will all affect how much currency you'll receive at the end of the transaction.

The hidden exchange rate margin fee that we recorded below is not guaranteed. However, we calculated the margin and by recording both the real mid-market exchange rate and the provider's exchange rates at the same time, at 9:25 CEST on September 14th, 2023. In this comparison test, we requested a £1,000 conversion into Euros at each provider:

Tesco vs Other UK Bureau de Change Euro Rates

Check out this table to compare Tesco's euro rate margins, commission, and other fees to those of other UK travel money bureau de change.

Data quoted: 14 September 2023 *Calculated on 9:25 CEST on September 14th, 2023 for a £1,000 conversion into Euros (margin may vary depending on the foreign currency)

Tesco Travel Money Limits and Fees

In addition to hidden exchange rate margins and commission fees, bureau de change in the UK may impose some transaction limits, cash delivery fees, and surcharges when paying by debit or credit card.

Tesco Travel Money for In-Store Pick-Up

Tesco sets £50 minimums and £2,500 maximums for travel money bought in-store.

  • Minimum order amount: £50
  • Maximum order amount: £2,500
  • Surcharge for payment by debit card: None
  • Surcharge for payment by credit card: None

Tesco Travel Money for Home Cash Delivery

For online travel money orders, the minimum order amount is £50 and the maximum is £2,500. Orders over £500 enjoy free delivery. Otherwise, Tesco will charge a delivery fee of £4.99 for orders of £75 to 149.99 and £3.95 for orders of £150 to 499.99.

  • Maximum order amount:  £2,500
  • Minimum order amount for free delivery:  £500
  • Delivery charge for orders under free delivery amount:  £3.95 to £4.99
  • Surcharge for payment by debit card:  None
  • Surcharge for payment by credit card:  None

Factors That Affect Tesco Exchange Rates

Exchange rates are influenced by a variety of complex factors, including inflation, interest rates, international trade flows, government intervention, and much more. The unpredictability of exchange rate fluctuations is due in large part to the combined influence that all of these factors have at once on the value of a given currency.

In regards to foreign exchange for travel money, customers should take heed on one crucial fact: bureau de change and providers like Tesco will often automate their exchange rates so that they fluctuates in sync with the market, but at a weaker rate.

Before you exchange your British pounds for Euros, US Dollars, or any other currency for your travels, make sure to compare Tesco's exchange rate to the real mid-market rate.

Get the Best Exchange Rates with Tesco Alternatives

With the introduction of travel debit cards and the development of multi-currency accounts , there are now limited benefits to getting travel currency in the UK through a travel money provider (such as those found on platforms like MoneySuperMarket).

Traditionally, getting physical bills of foreign cash from a travel money exchange in the UK served as a convenient option before your journey. Nevertheless, it has become significantly more cost-effective to simply withdraw cash at an ATM during your overseas trip. Additionally, the majority of retailers and merchants abroad now readily accept card payments. Moreover, there are travel cards available that exempt you from foreign transaction fees . Their virtual cards also reduce the risks associated with carrying substantial amounts of cash while traveling.

In the following list, we will compare three companies for getting travel currency while in the UK . Let's explore these options:

Revolut  is our top choice for travel money in the UK because it charges zero fees for first £1,000 per month that you exchange (only on weekdays, since weekend surcharges apply). The platform works entirely by desktop or smartphone, and they send you a debit card to access your travel money. After the fair usage limit, Revolut charges 1% of the total for Standard plan customers.

What's just as impressive is Revolut's exchange rate fees. While markups vary by currency and increase on the weekends, the average margin is a minuscule 0.2%. For euros (€), the most popular currency used for travel money in the UK, Revolut sometimes applies an exchange rate that is actually stronger than the European Central Bank's mid-market rate. While not guaranteed, this means you can gain when you exchange your GBP to EUR for your next holiday in the Eurozone.

You can use Revolut's debit card to use at ATMs for local cash. As a Standard customer, you'd get £200 per month of fee-free withdrawals, though third-party ATM withdrawal fees may still apply.

Starling Bank

Starling Bank  stands out as one of the premier debit cards for international travel for customers in the UK, thanks to its absence of foreign transaction fees. If you solely have their GBP account, your Starling Bank card will apply the live exchange rate used by MasterCard, which closely aligns with the mid-market exchange rate.

Starling Bank also provides EUR accounts for no additional cost, making it an ideal choice for traveling to countries that accept euros. In such instances, your Starling Bank debit card will access these account balances, allowing it to be recognised as a local Eurozone card.

One of the most compelling features of Starling Bank is its complete exemption from ATM fees, both domestically and internationally. Irrespective of the amount of cash withdrawn or the frequency of withdrawals, Starling Bank never imposes any fees for ATM transactions. While third-party fees may still apply, as determined by the ATM owner, this travel benefit solidifies Starling Bank's position as the top debit card for international travel for UK residents and citizens.

Wise Account

The power of the  Wise  multi-currency account comes from never charging hidden exchange rate margin fees . No matter which foreign currency you want, Wise will always apply the real mid-market exchange rate to your British pounds. Instead, it charges a transparent service fee that ranges from 0.3% to around 2% depending on the currency.

The Wise account lets you exchange, hold, and spend over 50 foreign currencies with its debit card. It even comes with checking account details for 10 countries, including a UK sort code, US account number, EU IBAN, and more. This means you can receive money locally from those countries with direct debits, SEPA payments, and other methods.

For holiday cash, you can use the Wise debit card for 2 free ATM withdrawals for a total of £200 per month.

30 April 2024

Bought £200 worth of Canadian dollars

I ordered my currency on line. Traveled to the store to collect it and the surly woman in the kiosk told me my photo ID wasn’t accepted

. Their FAQs state You’ll need to bring valid photo ID e.g. passport, full UK photographic driving licence (we do not accept provisional driving licences) or EU ID. They should change this to not passports and driving licenses are acceptable.

My husband did have his driving license so I asked if I could cancel my order and he could buy the currency as they definitely had it in stock. Was told he wouldn’t get the online rate which I felt was fair but also I would be charged £10 to do this.

So much red tape and money making going on here.

I refused to pay the £10 on principle so have to travel back today. Needless to say I won’t be using Tesco currency again and the young lady in the chesterfield kiosk needs some customer service training.

Bought £200 worth of Euros

I popped into Birkenhead, Bidston Moss Tesco to get £200 of Euros. The service was excellent and the rate was very good with a club card. Thank you Tesco.

22 April 2024

Bought £999 worth of Euros

Well I ordered some euros on there web site, unfortunately the time it stated they were open was incorrect as I had to wait half hour until someone eventually turned up.

Not there fault just poor management!!

Then the problems really started, as the amount I had been quoted had increased, this took another half hour.

Sadly the poor woman who serving me had to contact the main office and had to wait for them to sort it out.

12 April 2024

Sold 370 Euros

Good rate when buying euros but the buy back rate is robbery 1.335.to change euros back to sterling must be the lowest exchange rate going.

29 March 2024

Bought Euros

After checking online, we’ve Just got a much lower rate on the Euro in store. It wasn’t explained to us that you have to order online to get that rate (even with a club card). Very poor customer service. Won’t be using again!!

Bought travel money

I was served by Alan at the Crewe branch. He took the trouble to telephone me after I had ordered on line to find out what value notes I required. When collecting the money in store, the notes were ready and were counted clearly. Alan was extremely pleasant and helpful. This was a very pleasant experience.

I tried to buy £1000 of Thai Baht online with a Clubcard discount

Computer said Invalid Number

5 tries no joy

Rang Holmebush branch 3 times and after ringing for a while it cut me off every time

Eventually spoke to a human being who confirmed that my Clubcard number was correct

He agreed there was a problem with the website and suggested various technical ways to solve the problem

But after wasting well over an hour I decided NOT TO SPEND MY £1000 WITH TESCO and went to my Bank

18 December 2023

Tesco at formby bypass exchange bureau. I went to get money exchanged only to be told by the woman behind counter that it was closed as she had to much work to catch up on . Have you ever heard such nonsense In all your life no wonder the country is in a mess absolutely bone idol ,never to return.

14 December 2023

Yesterday I was served by Caroline at the Bletchley branch of Tesco to purchase some euros. She was very friendly and opened the kiosk up early for me. This was half an hour before she should have opened. Excellent service.

14 November 2023

Bought £500 worth of Omani rials

Ordered Omani Rial from Tesco travel money to be delivered by home delivery on Tuesday 14th November as I am travelling on Wednesday November 15th. Had day off work to be in on the 14th to be able to sign for the package. At 12.00p.m I received an sms message fro Tesco to say that my money won't be delivered today but could be 24hr delay which means it arrives after I have departed the country. No action from Tesco to help out on any alternative.

Absolutely useless service, do not use.

2 November 2023

Bought £300 worth of US dollars

Bought £300 worth of US dollars. I received most of the money in very high denominations, $100 and $50 dollar bills - absolutely useless for travelling. Will not use their service again.

17 August 2023

Bought £440 worth of Euros

Orded Euro`s online Monday evening for collection Wednesday after 3 p.m from a Local Tesco store .

Rate really good . Collected after 7 p.m from local store , asked to check correct at customer services .

Well done Tesco .

2 August 2023

Bought £300 worth of Euros

If you're a Clubcard holder you get a better rate than what's shown here, so worth checking their website. Money was at my local store the next day and even got a call from the person at the bureau to tell me it was ready and when they would be closed for lunch, breaks etc so I wouldn't be hanging around waiting when I went to collect. Can't fault in any way, will definitely use again.

24 June 2023

Bought £152 worth of Euros

Why is it when you order euros with your credit card they debit it twice. One goes on your account but the other remains in pending and takes a week to come off. This affects the funds available to use.

Buy your Japanese Yen before you fly

Benefits of planning ahead.

If you buy Japanese Yen online before you set off, you’ll be able to start enjoying Japan from the get-go. Having cash for those little essentials, whether it’s a taxi from the airport or snacks to eat when you land, makes everything that little bit easier.

You won’t have to waste time trying to find an ATM that accepts your bank card if you convert your Pounds to Yen before you go. There’ll be no need to worry about additional bank charges or changing exchange rates either.

Get your currency when it's convenient for you

You can use Click & Collect to arrange a time to pick up your Japanese Yen as part of your weekly shop, either from a Tesco Travel Money bureau or customer service desks. You can also use our home delivery service, which is free for online orders of £500 or more.

Exchange rates can change throughout the day and may vary depending on whether you buy in-store, online, or over the phone.

Common questions about the Japanese Yen

The Japanese Yen is the official currency of Japan. Its international symbol is ¥ and 円 in Japan. Its abbreviation is JPY, and it’s issued by Bank Japan.

The Yen is a relatively new currency. It was introduced by the Meiji government in 1871 when it replaced the complex, copper-coin-based system of the Tokugawa era. Sen and Rin coins were also in circulation up until 1953, when they were removed.

Yen notes come in 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen.

Yen coins come in 1 yen, 5 yen, 10 yen, 50 yen, 100 yen and 500 yen.

The Japanese Yen is only used in Japan, where it’s the official currency. It’s the third-most traded currency in the foreign exchange market, behind the US Dollar and the Euro.

Tipping isn’t expected in Japan. In fact, it can be considered quite rude. In Japan, you can expect to receive good service as a point of pride and most people won’t accept a tip, unless they’re trying to avoid offending you.

In restaurants, you’ll often pay at a register rather than at your table and you won’t be expected to leave a tip. The same is true for other times where you might be used to tipping, like taxi rides or hotel services. If you receive a guided tour, you may consider a tip but always place it in an envelope and present the envelope with both hands on it and your head inclined.
