Leaving the house checklist

Leaving the house checklist: 30 things to do before going on vacation

Organizing a long trip can be stressful: planning the itinerary, packing, exchanging money (it’s easy with Wise !), delegating work… Well, preparing your home is just as important as preparing yourself, your luggage, and your plans. And it doesn’t have to be exhausting: just follow my Leaving The House Checklist and you’ll be ready to go!

After travelling to Cortina, Italy for more than one month a few times, we have gained useful experience on what to do at home before a long trip. Trust me, it’s a learning process, and I want to make it easier for you.

30 THINGS TO DO BEFORE GOING ON A LONG TRIP

As usual, I’m the over-planner and Darek is the last-minute one 🙂 I start making lists weeks in advance, while Darek would just take the trash out, lock the door and go. This is why we work well together: I plan it all, and he helps me tick the boxes and then relax.

Leaving your home can be demanding, especially if this is your first long vacation. Do you ever freeze in panic, 10 minutes after you left, and try to remember if you locked the door twice? Now you’ll be thinking also of the mail, of the food in the fridge, of the gas.

Our best advice is to take your own notes about your own home. You’re the boss! Our checklist will help you. One step at a time, everything will get done and you’ll be ready to go. Check out also this great article by Porch with more advice from experienced travellers.

ONE MONTH BEFORE YOUR VACATION

Why does the checklist for leaving home for vacation starts so long in advance? Because you will avoid getting stressed out as the day of departure comes near 🙂

1. Meet the neighbours

Being on friendly terms with the neighbours can always come in handy. Get to know them in advance, invite them for coffee or have a chat on the stairs. It will be easier to ask them to watch out for your mail when you leave.

2. Consider asking for someone to watch your home

Depending on where you live and what your home needs, think of asking a neighbour, a friend or family member, or a homesitter for help. Ask them in advance, just in case they also plan to travel in the same period, or cannot assist you for other reasons. Consider these chores:

  • Watering plants/mowing the lawn
  • Retrieving the mail (consider leaving an authorization for mail that requires a signature)
  • Throwing out ads from the mailbox
  • Opening the taps and flushing the toilets from time to time

If your home should look lived in, to avoid burglars, consider also:

  • Putting out the garbage bin
  • Parking a car out front from time to time
  • Turning the lights on in the morning and evening

Turning the lights on and off could be automated with a timer.

Our flat doesn’t need much attention, but we still asked family to go and check on it from time to time – especially when I was waiting for official letters from the government, they opened them and sent me a picture.

3. Decide what appliances and electronics to unplug

Before leaving for a long trip, take your time to research and decide what devices to unplug. It may require reading the instructions.

For example, our robot vacuum cleaner should be unplugged. The tv, instead, can stay plugged in – it doesn’t make a big difference. Our fridge-freezer is never completely empty, so we leave it plugged in. We unplug anything that has a led always on, like the router.

In general, consider that unplugging appliances saves energy and money, and helps lower the risk of fires.

Go through the rooms, look at all the appliances in your house, and make a “departure day list” of what to uplug. Keep it handy on your phone by using my template checklist, or write it on a post-it and stick it to the door – so you’ll be quick at unplugging on the day of departure.

Some standard appliances are:

  • PlayStation and consoles
  • Internet router
  • Electric toothbrush/razor
  • Computer charger
  • Phone chargers
  • Robot vacuum cleaner
  • Fridge and freezer
  • Coffee maker and kitchen appliances
  • Washing machine
  • Air conditioner/fan

4. Check your plumbing and taps

Do the pipes in your building have recurring problems? Maybe it’s worth closing the main tap. But is there any machine, like the water heater, that draws water automatically? Look it up in advance.

If you are unsure, consider closing individual water valves, like the ones of the toilets, sinks, washing machine and dishwasher.

Don’t close the main tap if a homesitter will need to use the toilet.

Should you leave the lawn watering on? Do you have any hoses to wrap or disconnect? Add everything to your Leaving Home checklist:

  • Water heater
  • Sink valves
  • Toilet valves
  • Garden hoses etc.

5. Figure out what to do with the heating/air conditioning

Depending on where you live and on your heating/air conditioning devices, find out the best solution so your pipes don’t freeze, or you don’t come back to a furnace.

Our heater turns on automatically according to the temperature on the thermostat, so we set it for a lower temperature than usual: it consumes less, but it turns on to prevent the flat from freezing. It runs on gas, so we cannot close the gas tap.

If you have a “vacation mode”, make sure it works.

Whatever you decide, add it to the checklist.

6. Do all necessary maintenance

This could be a long list, but it will definitely prevent headaches and expensive damage.

Start checking in advance, so you have time to fix whatever requires fixing.

  • Check windows, and make sure they don’t leak
  • Check all locks
  • Clean the gutters
  • Check the car
  • Check the air conditioning
  • Check smoke detectors
  • Check the alarm system

7. The bills: Pay them in advance, automate, or be prepared to pay them during your trip

Unpaid bills can result in expensive fees!

If you can, pay them in advance, or automate the payment from a card or account.

My bills are different every month, so I don’t pay them in advance. When I receive them by email, I pay online with my local bank card: consequently, even though I don’t like to bring with me credit cards that I don’t need (as you know from my minimalist packing list ), if I travel longer than the usual payment deadline, I bring that card with me.

8. Make plans for your plants/pets

I don’t have pets, and I own just a couple of plants that can survive the apocalypse, so I can’t give you advice on this.

Do your research and figure out who can help you.

9. Make a copy of your keys

Well before you leave for your long trip, make a copy of your keys and plan to leave it with someone trustworthy: a friend, family member, a neighbor. You never know if you’ll be so unlucky to lose your home keys.

The reason to do it in advance is that some keys require permission from the building manager to be copied, or they can be copied just by a specific shop: you won’t know until you research. Don’t leave it for the last week.

10. Cancel the mail

We barely receive any mail, so I don’t really know what advice to give 🙂

For example, alert your post office to hold your mail until your return, or have it forwarded to family or friends.

11. Check your insurance/alarm

We don’t have any insurance or alarm, but I imagine that some may require you to inform them if you leave, or it could be handy to have their number in your phone.

If your alarm uses batteries, put some new ones in.

Consider installing outdoor lights with motion sensors – I read they are a good deterrent for burglars.

Leaving the house checklist

ONE WEEK TO 48 HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE

Almost ready! You must be finishing up with your travel plans, telling your colleagues at work how to cover for you, and preparing your packing list (I can help with that: here’s my time-saving minimalist packing list! ). Here are a few more items on the checklist before leaving home that you want to tick.

12. Do some strategic groceries

You don’t want to come back to an empty fridge and a sad pantry. Especially if you arrive home late from your trip, make sure you have the ingredients to cook something easy and comforting. Think of dry ingredients like pasta or rice, long-lasting sauces in jars, cans of tuna or beans…

My zero-effort food is pasta with pesto sauce 🙂

Otherwise, you can also prepare some food and freeze it. A few minutes in the microwave and your first meal back home will be ready! In this case, remember to leave the freezer plugged in.

13. Stock up on essentials

Besides some strategic groceries, make sure you stock up on essentials like toilet paper, bottled water, or anything that you use on a daily basis.

If you bring your toothpaste/shower gel/shampoo on the trip, you may finish it: buy some before you leave, and avoid bad surprises when you come back.

14. Eat all the perishable food

During the last week before you leave on holiday, make sure you eat all the fresh fruit and vegetables, finish all open cans and jars, and drink all the open cartons.

Do not leave anything in the fridge or in the pantry that may create mold or go bad in any way.

You do not want to come back home and find a smelly surprise waiting for you!

15. Leave clean clothes for the first day

As you start planning what to pack for a long trip, you will probably do the laundry, in order to pack clean clothes.

A few days before your departure, plan (and wash) a couple of outfits for your first days back home too.

You will be overwhelmed with dirty clothes from your trip: at least, you won’t have to figure out what to wear on your first day back at work.

16. Inform the neighbours

A few days before you leave, pop over to your neighbours to tell them you will be gone for a while. Leave your name, phone number, and date of your return on a post-it, for emergencies.

This is also the perfect occasion to ask them to water your plants (which you can bring to them, instead of allowing them into your flat), or watch out for any mail you are waiting for.

17. Speak with your friend/home-sitter again

If you need someone to take care of your home while you’re away, you should have already mentioned this to them. This is the moment to review what you want them to do – and make sure they remember!

18. Prepare the extra set of keys

Now that you have an extra set of keys, decide whether to leave them to your neighbour, to family or friends, or to hide them somewhere safe.

If a trusted person will enter your home with your keys, make sure you teach them how to disable and enable the alarm.

19. Replace the batteries of your smoke alarm

I have to admit we’ve never done this before, but we’ll do it next time. If beeps like crazy when the battery dies, it would definitely drive the neighbours crazy.

20. Mow the lawn

Cut the grass a little lower, take care of any overgrown branches. Make sure your home looks taken care of, and you won’t have a heart attack when you come back.

ONE DAY BEFORE THE TRIP

Tomorrow is the day! Almost everything is done, thanks to the Leaving The House Checklist. Just a couple more things to do, and you can relax. It’s time to travel! 🙂

21. Clean and tidy up

After being away for a long time, there’s nothing worse than coming back to a dirty and messy home. When I’m tired from a long trip, entering a clean and tidy home makes me feel relaxed.

In the last couple of days before departure, I vacuum around, wash the bathrooms, and tidy up stuff that is usually all over the place (mostly toys and clothes, gah!). I’m usually too busy to do deep cleaning, so I’m satisfied with this. I don’t like cleaning, but I like even less cleaning after going on holiday!

Some more important cleaning to do before leaving home for a long vacation:

  • Empty the dishwasher, clean the filter, and leave it cracked open to avoid smells
  • Clean the fridge, which should be quite empty by now (I’m guilty of forgetting parmesan in the grater… What a smelly surprise!)
  • Clean your garbage disposal (I don’t have one, but I read that a mix of water and vinegar does the trick, or lemon juice, or baking soda)
  • Seal boxes of dry food, or move it to a jar
  • Make the beds and enjoy the smell of fresh sheets when you return (I admit, I rarely have time to do this!)
  • Empty the washing machine and dryer, and leave them cracked open so they don’t grow mold

22. Put valuables in a safe

If you have a safe, use it! We don’t have one, so we hide our valuables.

Valuables are:

  • Cash and cards
  • Laptop with valuable info (e.g. login to bank etc.)
  • Documents, ID, etc.

23. Water the plants

I swear I killed so many plants. Now I only have super-resistant ones that survive a month without water 🙂

24. Park the car

Park the car in the garage or make sure it’s safe.

ON THE DAY OF DEPARTURE

The day has finally come! The Leaving The House Checklist is almost complete: use it to finish the last steps.

25. Close utilities and unplug the chosen appliances

Pick up the list of appliances to unplug and utilities to close. You researched and took your decisions in the last few days: this is your moment to implement them!

Follow your list: unplug, turn off, set the thermostat, turn on the vacation mode, as you previously decided.

Avoid last-minute panic: as you go through the list, say out loud what you are doing, tick the list, and then take the list with you.

26. Bring out the trash

On the day before you travel, or on the same day of departure, take out all the trash! From the kitchen, the rooms, the bathroom, even the paper and plastic.

Keep your home clean from unexpected smells and pests.

27. Close windows, curtains, shutters, lock doors

Close and lock all windows, draw the curtains or close the shutters. Lock doors, garage, gate.

28. Turn on the alarm

The final touch that gives you the ultimate peace of mind.

ON THE DAY OF RETURN

The checklist is still useful!

29. Turn everything back on

Thanks to your efforts before departure, you know exactly what is turned off, closed, unplugged. The checklist will remind you to open the washing machine tap before you turn it on 🙂

30. Save the checklist for next time!

Most importantly, the checklist helps you learn about your home. Is the heater ok after you left it on vacation mode? Make a note. Did your neighbour make a good job with your mail? Make a note and buy them some chocolates. Did you forget something? Add it to the list.

Use the Leaving The House Checklist again for the next trip: you’ll be smarter and faster!

I quit my job at Meta and traveled to Bali to find myself — but 2 months later, I moved back into my parents' house more confused than ever

  • Simone Landis quit her job at Meta and traveled to Bali seeking a spiritual reset.
  • Landis said she felt more lost than ever during her two-month vacation.
  • She moved back into her childhood home and plans to stay for the foreseeable future.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Simone Landis, a 29-year-old from San Francisco who quit her job at Meta. It's been edited for length and clarity.

My event-planning job at Meta was exciting and kept me on my toes, but when the pandemic shut down all in-person gatherings and my role was diminished to data analytics , I lost passion for the job. My dissatisfaction was tempered by the hefty paycheck and job security, but after two years I was desperately searching for more out of my career.

In the fall of 2022, I quit my job and booked a flight to Bali in pursuit of my very own "Eat, Pray, Love" experience. Yet I found myself feeling more lost and confused than ever, so I returned to the States and had to move back into my childhood home.

I have no regrets about spending $5,000 on a trip to Bali, but I wish I'd known I couldn't run away from my inner turmoil, no matter how far I went.

My events job at Meta was tough to transition online

I started working at Meta in the fall of 2019 within its global security department. My job was to plan everything from companywide holiday parties to small shareholder meetings, ensuring that the proper executive protection and medical personnel were present.

I had so much fun planning events out of the Bay Area headquarters and loved how dynamic and busy it kept me.

But when the pandemic hit, my main tasks pivoted to data analytics. Two years went by without the return of in-person events, and I lost my spark for work.

My job turned into something entirely different than what I signed up for, and I wasn't looking forward to my day-to-day tasks. I knew it was time to move on, but I was afraid to let go of a secure paycheck.

I started working a weekend gig at an event-planning agency to satisfy my event interest while I held on to my job at Meta. A few months later, my roommate in San Francisco decided to move out, and I was faced with a decision to either stay at Meta and find my own apartment or use this as my moment to move on.

I'd spent two years saving up money, including $5,000 exclusively for travel, so I knew I could financially sustain a few months away from work. I thought a vacation would clear my head and allow me to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life.

I quit my job and flew to Bali

I quit my job at Meta in the fall of 2022, didn't renew my lease, and booked a two-month trip to Bali . I decided on Bali because of its reputation as a healing, spiritual place with cultural traditions rooted in gratitude. I chose to do a yoga retreat because I'd been practicing for years and wanted to be surrounded by like-minded people.

On the outside, Bali was exactly what I expected. My trip was filled with delicious vegan food, endless yoga classes, and cafés with digital nomads. The island is gorgeous, and I had ample time to explore the lush nature.

However, it was a lot more commercialized than I expected. Most of my immediate surroundings were Westernized and catered exclusively to tourists and people like me who bought into the same Bali fantasy of a spiritual reset.

I felt more lost than ever

I went in with these grand plans of creating social-media travel content, meeting new friends, and figuring out next steps for my career.

But I found myself completely alone, overcome with social anxiety, and too overwhelmed to film anything. The pressure I put on myself to make something of this vacation sent me into decision paralysis.

I hoped to emerge from a  meditation  with a revelation about what I should do with my life, but I felt more lost than ever.

Rather than clearing my head, the time away made space for me to ruminate over the fact that I was 27, an age when it seemed like most of my friends were making their way up the corporate ladder, starting families, or settling down. I grappled with the fact that I didn't have any of the things I thought defined success at my age.

I moved back into my childhood home

After two months in Bali, I flew back to the Bay Area and had to move into my childhood home . My parents don't live there year-round, so I had the place largely to myself, but it felt weird to return.

It was humbling and frankly embarrassing to reflect on the fact that I had given up everything to travel and find myself but the only place I found myself was back in my childhood bedroom. It forced me to look inward and rediscover what the little girl who once lived here wanted. I could run away, I could travel again, but I knew I'd always have to come home to myself.

I continued working part time at the events company, and it reawakened my passion for events and in-person interactions. I stifled the social anxiety I struggled with in Bali and successfully advocated to my bosses for a promotion. Now I'm working more hours and taking on more responsibility and creative liberties.

I'm also planning on getting my yoga -teacher training and using my events background to lead international yoga retreats. Who knows, maybe I'll even return to Bali to lead a yoga retreat.

I'm still living in my childhood home, which I feel is common but not talked about enough. The Bay Area is expensive, and while it's not exactly what I imagined for myself at 29, I'm happy to be here during this stage of my life. I'm excited to one day have a place of my own, but I'm in no rush to leave until I feel financially secure.

I don't have any regrets

I wouldn't take back my experience in Bali for a second, but I wish I'd had more realistic expectations. I set myself up for disappointment by relying on my vacation as a crutch for my identity crisis. The reality is that I just needed time with myself, regardless of the place.

I am, however, happy that I trusted my intuition and left Meta. Though it's going to be a long journey, I'm finally on a career path that aligns with my passions and goals.

If you quit your high-paying job without a backup plan and would like to tell your story, email Tess Martinelli at [email protected] .

Los Angeles Dodgers

Los angeles dodgers | dodgers’ shohei ohtani seems likely to reach 50-50 milestone during upcoming trip, manager dave roberts was hoping ohtani would do it during their final homestand, but with 47 home runs and 48 stolen bases already, history might be made during the seven-game swing through atlanta and miami.

trip home

But like parents sending their kid off to college, Dodgers fans will have to be content in knowing the biggest step in the process will have to happen away from home.

The Dodgers begin a seven-game road trip on Friday with four games in Atlanta and three more in Miami. The odds of Ohtani still being in search of 50-50 when the team returns home to face the Colorado Rockies on Sept. 20 are as unlikely as a well-kept dorm room.

Ohtani’s current status: 47 home runs and 48 stolen bases.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said this week that he hoped Ohtani would lock down his 50-50 season over the final homestand of the season. He now is resigned to that not happening.

“The way he’s going right now, probably not,” Roberts conceded. “Those fans in Miami might be in for a treat. But we’ll see. Obviously, I hope he does it, regardless of where, but it would be nice to be at home.”

There is always the chance that history goes down in Atlanta. Ohtani has hit as many as three home runs in a four-game span on multiple occasions, the most recent at the end of August. The first time he did it this year, the Braves and Marlins were involved when he hit four home runs in a three-game stretch May 4-6.

Still, history in South Florida seems the likeliest scenario. For any memorabilia prospectors out there, seats beyond the right field wall at Miami for all three games of next week’s series against the Dodgers were selling Thursday for as little as $8 per ticket for a pair.

As he closes in on the first 50-home run, 50-stolen base season in MLB history, Ohtani will continue his fervent studies.

“I see all the work he puts in,” Dodgers catcher Will Smith said Wednesday, not long after Ohtani delivered his most recent home run and stolen base . “It’s not like he goes out there and it’s too easy for him. He works harder than anybody. He scouts really hard and all that so it’s fun to see him go out there. He’s playing a different game so it’s fun to see.”

As Ohtani has appeared to make 50-50 his mission, he has not only increased the frequency with which he steals bases, his success rate has soared. Going back to July 23, Ohtani has been successful in his last 25 stolen base attempts.

When his home run Wednesday shot off his bat with a vapor trail, it screamed toward the right field seats at 118.1 mph.

“I feel sorry for the fan who tried to catch it,” Muncy said.

It isn’t even Ohtani’s hardest-hit ball this season. He had one at 119.2 mph off the bat on a single in Toronto earlier in the season. Even Blue Jays fans, upset that Ohtani didn’t choose them in free agency, let out an audible gasp.

Ohtani’s hard-hit percentage this season is 59.6, the highest of his career. His average exit velocity is 95.6 mph, also a career best.

“Each day he does something and you’re like, ‘I’ve never seen somebody do that before,’” said Tommy Edman, one of the newest Dodgers, who has been with the team for barely a month and has enjoyed every bit of the Ohtani spectacle.

Edman has even started to join in the fun, with a pair of home runs in each of his past two games. And yet, Edman can’t hide his amazement with what Ohtani is doing.

“The day game on Sunday, the ball he hit off the (former Stadium Club) glass in right field , and then (Wednesday) that was one of the lowest (launch angle) home runs I think I have ever seen. … He just crushes the ball. And to do that and steal as many bases as he is, that’s pretty incredible.”

Don’t get used to the stolen bases, Roberts has warned. Ohtani’s willingness to run, with unprecedented frequency, has roots in his offseason elbow surgery. His 48 steals crush his previous high of 26 with the Angels during one of his two American League MVP seasons in 2021 .

“He’s not pitching this year so I think he is emptying the tank offensively,” Roberts said. “I do think the power, the on-base (percentage), the average, I think he can do that as a pitcher. He’s done something pretty similar like that with his OPS. But as far as the stolen bases go, I’m not sure about that.”

And even if Ohtani does reach the 50-50 milestone on the road, he might continue to put on a show back home, even if the Dodgers wrap up a playoff spot or a National League West title with games to spare.

Seemingly the favorite to earn NL MVP honors, even as a designated hitter, a media member out of New York has taken to stumping for the New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor, who is having a fine season in his own right.

There has even been a claim from the East Coast of “a well-known West Coast bias” with award voting. That bias must have taken a year off when the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge won the AL MVP in 2022 with 28 first-place votes , while Ohtani received just two. Ohtani was productive on offense that year and also finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting .

“That’s a first,” Roberts said to laughter all around. “That’s not gonna age well. West Coast bias? Right.”

‘The Trip Home’ is the Most Ambitious Album From The Crystal Method Yet

Erik Larson

The Trip Home  overcomes a few growing pains to become The Crystal Method’s best, and most experimental, album in ages.

Back in 2014, I was obsessed with The Crystal Method . The eponymous album from the famous electronic duo, full of sparky, electro beats that threaded a careful line between exhilarating and cheesy, somehow infiltrated my daily rotation of alt-rock hits such as The National, Joywave, and Queens of the Stone Age. I didn’t expect it to stick, but stick it did, and I listened to it over and over, each tracks’ relentless momentum and go-for-break energy etching itself into my memory. Even now, when I picked up the album two days ago in preparation for this review after years of forgetting it existed, I could still trace the beat of each song, each squirrely synth, and careening drop, like it was 2014 all over again. In short, I fucking love that album.

Released today, September 28,  The Trip Home  is nothing like The Crystal Method . Hell, it’s practically nothing like The Crystal Method, the band. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, for the most part, it’s a really good thing. Despite it feeling half-finished at times, this album is still an experimental triumph.

The Trip Home is the first Crystal Method record without founding member Ken Jordan, who has since retired from the group. With half of the duo gone and member Scott Kirkland continuing to use the mantle as a solo artist, one is left to wonder if the group can still maintain their signature sound. Is this still a Crystal Method album, and not a Scott Kirkland album? The answer is mostly yes, but also no, no, no.

More so than any other past release, The Trip Home is a concept album, dense with atmosphere and offering a strong thematic cohesion throughout all the tracks that instantly marks it as a new sound for the band. Instead of feeling like a collection of songs tied together by the format and little else, this album feels like a movie score, less interested in making you dance or bob your head than drawing you into its world. It’s the most ambitious Crystal Method record yet, and it works — for the most part.

As a 12-song album, The Trip Home is best examined in threes.

The first three songs, “ The Raze ,” “ Holy Arp ,” and “ Moment of Truth ,” are fantastic. “The Raze” sets the tone with screaming synths that screech and snarl, announcing itself like the theme song for a horror movie. As a thumping beat drags you along, bass assaults your senses, acoustic drums lull you into a trance, and arpeggiating keys cut the night sky. It’s a fantastic opener.

Then the album does an immediate about-face and sends you head-first into “ Holy Arp ,” a funky single that’s a hell of a good time. Evoking Rebel Era -era GRiZ with its toe-tapping swagger and electronic harmonica, “Holy Arp” is the closest the album has to a “fun” song. Honestly, it doesn’t even need quotes — “Holy Arp” is a fun song, period. Enjoy it while it lasts.

“Moment of Truth ” returns the album to its darker sound that it retains for the majority of its runtime. It’s a great melding of The Crystal Method’s previous electro style with the new commitment to more filmic sounds, featuring a heavy use of The Crystal Method’s big beat synth and a manic smattering of keys. It even has a dramatic break in the middle where the synths soar and a lone voice brings you higher and higher before crashing back down into chorus.

The next three songs begin to show the album buckling under the weight of its ambitious ideas.

“Ghost in the City ” is another single song that doesn’t work nearly as well as “Holy Arp.” Despite having an awesome intro that builds to what should be an awesome drop, the song quickly seems to run out of ideas, juggling a few different sounds that give the track a scattershot feeling that kept me from feeling totally invested. It just keeps switching things up, starting and then stopping, never allowing the listener to fully appreciate any one style. I wish it had spent more time fleshing out some of the better ideas than just throwing everything at the wall and hoping something stuck.

While slightly undercooked songs end up become a theme of the album, “ Turbulence ” suffers from no such problems. It’s a great electro tune, moody and intricate, anchored by an eerie vocal sample and the waa-waa of synths. Perhaps mimicking its namesake, the track ebbs in and out, giving itself an oddly inviting energy that bumps up and cools down throughout its runtime.

“ Carry On ” is an interesting idea that’s barely there. It just sorta comes and goes. I understand the need for intermission songs to help establish flow on an album, but “Carry On” just feels unfinished. It starts with a nice guitar-plucking melody that gets marginally more complex as it goes on, as if it’s heading towards something, and then just… ends. It sounds like the beginning to a more interesting song, and I feel like it could have been if it had spent a little more time in the oven.

Atmosphere is everything on songs seven through nine.

“ The Drive Inside ” feels like it should take place in outer space. I’m not 100% sure what that means, but after listening to it a few times, that’s all I can think about. This is one of the more downtempo tracks on the album, and wouldn’t feel out of place in the score of a sci-fi film. Despite its chill exterior, it stays fresh throughout, continuing to layer interesting sounds upon interesting sounds — new beats, new synths, new arpeggios, new samples — until the very end. It’s low-key one my album favs.

“ Chapter One ” is a vocal cut that feels even more filmic and experimental than the last track. Eschewing any type of beat, this song is all emotion, all the time, starting small and growing until it overwhelms. Lyrics waxing metaphoric about the ocean and a lost lover tug at the heartstrings, and late-coming violins offer the punch it needs to fulfill its big screen ambitions. It feels like it should accompany a triumphant scene in a movie, where the lead character looks out at the sunset and finally realizes who they really are.

“ Cabin Pressure ” is probably the darkest song on the album, and probably my favorite, too, thanks in part to two incredible features: Matt Lange and Justin Chancellor. Yes, Justin Chancellor, the Tool bassist. Taking a classic Crystal Method drumline and slathering on an absolutely sinister synth, “Cabin Pressure” keeps the tension high throughout, breaking out the slide guitar section in alternating sections that feel way more foreboding than they should. As a standalone song, it doesn’t have the same  umph as some of the other highlight tracks, but it works perfectly where it is on the album, synthesizing the sounds both new and old into one wonderfully unique track.

The last three songs are the most ambitious — and the least successful.

“ There’s a Difference ” is an interesting track in more than just its composition. It’s actually a full-on remake of a song on their previous album, there known just as “ Difference ”. Here it uses the same vocals and guitar but offers a completely different take on the sound. While on The Crystal Method it was a typically prickly joint, full of the blaring Crystal Method electro sounds that dominate that album, here it’s a no-holds-barred rock anthem, combining ambient synths somewhat clumsily with live drums.

It’s a fantastic idea, and when it blasts off near the end, it’s an absolute riot — I only wish it was mixed slightly better. By the end, the guitar is so smothered by the drums and the synths that you can barely hear it, and thus it ends more limply than it should. Speaking of the ending, it’s abrupt, and about two bars too soon — it really sounds like it’s going to go for an encore, but then it doesn’t. If only it did; that would’ve helped sell that ending a lot more. A really good song, which would have become a great one if it was executed a little better.

“ Hold on to Something ” is the next song that could’ve used a little more time to figure out what it wanted to be. It starts with one vocalist and one beat for about a minute before giving up on that and noodling aimlessly with another vocalist until the end. Much like “Ghost in the City,” this song jumps around too much to get a grip on it. It’s packed with cool ideas that I wish were given a full song to be developed. Still, at least it’s sonically in line with the rest of the album, which is more than can be said for the final track.

“ Let’s Go Home ” ends the album with a complete departure. Immediately calling to mind the chiptune work of Lifeformed , “Let’s Go Home” is a strange track that feels completely at odds with the preceding eleven songs. It’s got a lot of cool ideas going on, each clumsily jostling for attention, stopping and starting and tripping over each other, barely stabilized by a wonderful bouncing bassline and glittering keys. It works — but only just.

On one hand, I think it’s a diverse final track that points to an infinity of possibilities on whatever the next Crystal Method album will be — on the other, I was hoping for a little more conclusion on the musical themes of the album. With so many of the prior songs working toward building a brooding, intoxicating atmosphere, it’s definitely a bit of a bummer to see it all but abandoned by the final few songs.

Overall, though, the ambitious ideas that The Trip Home gets right far outweigh the ones it gets wrong.

In a press release prior to the record’s release, Scott Kirkland said that he “wanted to make a timeless album that sounded great and that conveyed an emotional narrative and a strong appreciation of the album format.” He’s done just that. More than any other Crystal Method album, this one that flows and feels cohesive like an album. Its songs are emotional, evolutionary, and haunting. Instead of creating another big beat banger full of catchy tunes, Kirkland has gone the riskier route, making something more subdued, more alien — and perhaps more memorable as well.

Nice review, you’re very right about it being like a movie. It reminds me of some of the work from Tangerine Dream (esp their great, underrated movie soundtrack for Miracle Mile). And OMG the 80s pad sounds, esp at the start of There’s a Difference. LUSH.

Bucs pack pain of playoff loss for trip back to Detroit

  • Rick Stroud Times staff

TAMPA — A marvelous season ended, but it wasn’t over.

When the Bucs walked into the cold outside of Ford Field last January, having lost 31-23 to the Lions in an NFC division playoff game, they knew they would be back.

You don’t come within a two-minute drive of playing to go to the Super Bowl without wanting more.

The Bucs lost twice to Detroit last year, including once at Raymond James Stadium.

The showdown in Motown on Sunday won’t end anyone’s season. It’s only Week 2. But there are games where you stretch the sticks and ask for a measurement of your team.

This is one of them.

“Well, as a player, you hear all offseason who’s the favorite, and Detroit was on top of the list,” Bucs co-defensive coordinator Larry Foote said. “They did end our season last year but ... this is a good team. This is going to be a challenge.

“Last year, that atmosphere — even being from Detroit and playing a year there — that stadium, that was a special place and I’m looking forward to going back there and (being) in that environment. Hopefully we come out with the ‘W’ this time.”

In some ways, the playoff loss to the Lions proved to the Bucs that they could be a Super Bowl contender.

But their effort wasn’t good enough. Before he even left Ford Field that night, defensive tackle Vita Vea pledged to general manager Jason Licht that he would return in the best playing shape of his career in 2024.

Others, such as outside linebackers Yaya Diaby and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka followed suit.

The hope of taking another step with the Bucs is what also encouraged players such as Mike Evans, Mayfield, Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tristan Wirfs to sign long-term extensions to remain in Tampa Bay.

“You can definitely sense it already, within our building, when you put up the personnel, the game records, the scouting report, all that and you talk about the atmosphere, the memories instantly pop up and our guys are ready,” Mayfield said. “You know, it’s obviously a topic of conversation of they ended our year and so it’s one that we’ve been looking forward to and it just so happens to be the one this week.”

There are many parallels to the Lions’ success and the Bucs’ resurgence.

Start with the quarterbacks, both former No. 1 overall picks discarded by the teams that drafted them.

Jared Goff helped lead the Rams to the Super Bowl in the 2018 season, when they fell 13-3 to Tom Brady’s Patriots. But a few years later, they traded Goff and three draft picks, including two first-rounders, to the Lions for quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Still, the move wasn’t a bad one for Goff, who led the Lions to the NFC Championship Game last season, where they lost to the 49ers.

Goff has had his way with Todd Bowles’ defense for most of his career with the Rams and Lions. He’s averaged 383 passing yards in four games against Bowles’ defense in Tampa Bay. That’s the most of 15 quarterbacks with three or more starts against the Bucs during that period.

Meanwhile, Mayfield’s journey took him from Cleveland to Carolina, to the Rams and finally the Bucs in a span of about 18 months. After leading Tampa Bay to an NFC South title and wild-card playoff win over Philadelphia, he signed a three-year, $100 million contract in the offseason.

“I’m a huge Jared fan,” Mayfield said of Goff. “Much like me, sometimes it takes a different spot to feel comfortable and I just think he fits what they’re doing and he does it at a very high level. He’s not a flashy guy by any means, but he distributes the ball really well, so I’m a fan.”

The Bucs’ playoff loss at Detroit also exposed some weaknesses they tried to address in the offseason. Tampa Bay was outrushed 114-89 yards in the game. The addition of center Graham Barton, the team’s first-round pick, and Giants free agent Ben Bredenson has fortified the offensive line.

Defensively, the Bucs lacked some speed and playmakers. After being tied with the Lions to start the fourth quarter back in January, Detroit had 183 yards of offense in the final period.

So Tampa Bay brought back safety Jordan Whitehead after his two seasons with the Jets and added defensive back Tykee Smith and outside linebacker Chris Braswell in the draft.

“I might mention to my players that we wore down a little bit,” Foote said.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, injuries will prevent them from being at full strength today. All-Pro safety Winfield, defensive tackle Calijah Kancey and right tackle Luke Goedeke will miss the game. Cornerback Zyon McCollum was cleared from concussion protocol and will start.

But injuries aside, the Bucs know how big this game is. They remember falling 20-6 to the Lions at Raymond James Stadium, the only game they failed to score an offensive touchdown in last season. They still feel the chill of their season ending on that frigid Detroit night.

Sure, it’s only Week 2. Every game counts the same, but somehow it feels like this one matters more.

“Yeah, this is definitely one of those,” Mayfield said. “I mean, every week you have to bring your best stuff. At this level, if you don’t show up you can get beat any given week. This is one of those — on the road with a team who was in the NFC championship, where we aspire to be, so it’s one of those — measuring sticks to great competition (and) see how our guys handle it early on.

“You know, it’s a long season but we can learn a lot from this one.”

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

trip home

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Sept. 13, 2024

Follow along with live updates on the Trump and Harris campaigns .

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.
