Visit The Geology Education Museum

A number of exhibits related to the high school geography curriculum are available at the Geology Education Museum at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban. The feeding times are 10 a.m., 11 p.m., 13 a.m., 14 p.m., and 15 p.m.

Rickshaw Ride along the Durban Beachfront

In Durban, there are just approximately twenty officially registered rickshaw drivers. Their exquisite headdresses, which are embellished with beads and other ornaments, are well recognized.

This is a fantastic way to go about and experience life as a true visitor. This fleet of three-wheeled “tuk-tuk” vehicles has improved city transportation and is a great way to visit the “Golden Mile,” the six kilometres of Durban Beachfront. Visit Mini Town in Durban

Mini Town, one of Durban’s most popular attractions, gives a decent impression of some of the city’s monuments, and a stroll around will allow you to see fantastic models of some of Durban’s most noteworthy structures.

The airport with planes and the rail system, which is constantly in use, are two of the most well-liked aspects of Mini Town. A tug and ship are seen sailing around the harbour in the harbour scene. North beach.

Part of the Golden Mile, a strip of some of Durban’s best beaches, North Beach is popular for a reason. Flanked by long piers for leisurely afternoon strolls and dotted with an assortment of food joints, public pools and a merry-go-round, North Beach is always happening. The relatively calm waters make it a popular spot for both swimmers and surfers, and the paved promenade is filled with joggers, skaters and even those just walking their dogs. If you get there early in the morning, you’ll always find company on the sand, as you watch the sun rise over the Indian ocean.

Umhlanga Rocks

North of Durban is Umhlanga Rocks. It has slightly choppier waters, but it’s quieter and trendier, and it boasts a whalebone pier that CNN dubbed one of the most ‘beautiful piers in the world’ . The beach has golden sands and includes a running path that leads from its iconic red-and-white lighthouse all the way to the spectacular iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a world heritage site. The beach is surrounded by some upmarket eateries and is a stone’s throw from Gateway, the biggest mall in Africa.

Ansteys Beach

Often referred to as a ‘hidden gem’, Ansteys Beach is a small beach located in Bluff, a seaside suburb south of Durban, just 10–15km from the city centre. The water has some shallow spots for swimmers, with lifeguards and shark nets in place, and the water is perfect for snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing. And if you take a stroll along this laid-back beach at low tide, you can explore the exposed rock pools.

uShaka Beach

uShaka is sometimes referred to as the apartheid beach, due to the pier in the south, which earned a reputation as a dividing wall. But in spite of its history, this beach is fun, friendly and famous for kayaking, kite surfing and, of course, surfing. Toward the north stretches Addington Beach, reknowned for its surfing, and in the south is uShaka Marine World , which offers a world-class aquarium and water world. Moyo uShaka Pier houses a quirky café, and Vetch’s Pier is perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. And if you’re not in the mood to get wet, simply sit on the grassy higher ground and look out for dolphins on this beautiful stretch of coast, or watch the sand sculptures work their magic.

Tiger Rocks Beach

Lying south of Durban in Isipingo, this quiet, far-flung beach is almost unheard of. Yet it boasts some of the best views of the east’s Dolphin Coast, thanks to its location below a cliff. The rocky beach features numerous tidal pools that host an array of marine habitats, and it draws fishermen from all over, especially during the famous sardine run in winter. Durban is a buzzing coastal metropolis, located on the shores of the indian ocean in South Africa. There are many reasons to visit Durban. With an extensive coastline of golden beaches, a year round subtropical climate and a multicultural vibe, Durban is one of those cities in South Africa that is hard not to like and enjoy.

Durban has always fascinated me since my first visit back in 2008 even though I’m not really a huge fan of larger cities. During my travels around the world, I always tried to avoid them or stay for as short as possible. But sometimes, there is this ‘special’ atmosphere that surrounds a large city, and for me Durban is one of those.

For me, every time I arrive in Durban, it’s like arriving in a different world, a haven of relaxation, a break. There are several reasons why I would recommend every traveller to visit Durban during a holiday in South Africa. Durban also has plenty of activities to offer for every type of visitor and for any budget . Here are the best reasons to visit Durban in South Africa.

Durban, the warmest place to be

Durban has a warm subtropical climate, giving the city year round very pleasant weather. During the winter months, when in most parts of South Africa, temperatures can be very low, Durban still enjoys very pleasant and warm temperatures. During most of the winter days, it is possible to suntan on the beach and even take a swim in the ocean. It also very rarely rains during the winter months from May to September.

Swimming is possible all year round

The city is located on the east coast by the Indian ocean. With its warm waters, swimming is possible all year round. I personally do not like cold water and I will hardly ever swim anywhere in the ocean, but I always make an exception when in Durban. The Indian ocean is so inviting with its warm water, and even in winter, I will swim. For me and many others, this is definitely a reason to visit Durban, especially in winter. Swimming is only allowed at specific places on the beachfront, clearly marked by flags and lifeguard towers. Also, they have installed special shark nets to make swimming that much safer.

The Golden Mile

The ‘Golden Mile’ is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the city. It’s a 6km long stretch of golden beach with a paved promenade that runs all the way from Ushaka  to the Suncoast casino . During the last years a lot of revamping has been done and it is now a great place to enjoy the beachfront of the city centre. The promenade is very popular for cycling, jogging, roller skating, taking a stroll or just meeting up with other people. Especially during the early hours of the morning and by sunset a lot of local people come for a walk or their daily run.

On the Golden Mile, you can find various public pools, which is especially nice for children, playground areas, restaurants, bars and not to forget the typical Zulu rickshaw runners.

Durban is a culinary heaven

If you love indian curries, seafood, or fusion food, Durban is the place to be. Being the city with the largest indian population outside of India, Durban hosts a large amount of restaurants with some of the best indian food. Being located by the sea, fish and seafood is present on every menu and is fresh and tasty.

Multicultural mix

South Africa is known as the Rainbow Nation pointing out the country’s cultural diversity. Without doubt, Durban is the most multicultural city of South Africa, having a great cultural mix of Zulu, Indian, post colonial and African influences. When walking in town or on the beachfront, you will experience a great diversity of cultures. It also reflects in the cities architecture as well as in their food culture. For example, one of the typical features on the Durban beachfront is the iconic Zulu rickshaw runner, complete in traditional outfit.

The Surf City

Durban is known as the ‘Surf City’, with popular surf spots all along the Durban beachfront. From the first hours of the day till late afternoon you will spot surfers along the coast. Apart from the great waves on the ocean, it is also the warm waters that will attract many surfers, making it a comfortable ‘surf’ ride on the waves.

Durban is often incorrectly regarded as an unsafe city. As in many other large cities in the world, one should always be aware of their belongings and avoid certain areas. Durban is not different in that regard. However, the tourist areas as well as the beachfront are fine. Since the Golden Mile is a public beachfront in the middle of the city, one should not leave anything unattended when taking a swim. For the rest, according to my own experiences and taking the basic safety rules into account, Durban is safe.

Durban is the friendly city

Another one of the reasons to visit Durban is that the people from Durban are very warm and welcoming. Random people will start conversations, they are helpful and very friendly. At least that is my personal experience.

Durban is very laid back

Maybe it has something to do with the subtropical climate, maybe due to the multicultural mix, maybe with the warm water of the Indian ocean, one thing is for sure, Durban has a very laid back atmosphere. You’ll notice immediately when being in the city. Yet, it is a bustling and prosperous city, things are getting done, however in a more relaxed way.

14 Fun Things to Do in Durban

Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city in terms of both land and population. It’s located in the KwaZulu-Natal Province along the country’s east coast. The first thing you might notice when hopping off the plane is the unique weather. Unlike Cape Town and Johannesburg, Durban experiences real heat and humidity. It has its own tropical microclimate and is where all the country’s palms and sugar grow.

Many don’t realize the incredible foreign influence on this African city until they visit in person. Durban is shaped by its colonial past, with strong influences from throughout Africa and India.

The city is built along the coastline, with an urban beachfront zone. While this part of the city was once glamorous and safe, it isn’t anything to write home about these days. Instead, visitors gravitate towards Umhlanga on the north coast and up to Scottburgh along the South Coast.

Having visited the city plenty of times over my years living in Cape Town, these are a few of my favorite things to do in Durban:

Walk along the Golden Mile

Whenever I arrive in a new city, the first thing I like to do is explore on foot. To be honest, there aren’t many parts of Durban I recommend walking around alone. To put it lightly, the city center can be dangerous and unfriendly.

That said, the Golden Mile is one of the best parts of the city to explore. There is a good reason it’s one of the city’s main tourist attractions, stretching from the golden beaches, past iconic fishing piers, surf spots, and a ton of restaurants and cafes.

The mile runs along the coastline from uShaka Beach to Suncoast Casino. It includes a direct route to the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which will be discussed later. Some other major attractions along the walk include a Mini Town miniature museum and a popular picnic spot called Blue Lagoon.

Explore the Durban Botanical Garden

Durban’s Botanical Garden might not be as famous as Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch Gardens, but it is still one of the best places to visit in the tropical South African city. Founded in 1849, the gardens are the continent’s oldest surviving botanic gardens and remain a major space for plant conservation and biodiversity education in Durban.

The gardens are open Monday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and until 5:45 p.m. during summer. Entrance to the garden is free, but donations are always appreciated.

Pro Tip : Make sure to visit when the Ernest Thorpe Orchid House is open. Established in 1962, this conservatory is home to over 75 species of tropical orchids and 6,000 plants. The gardens also have an impressive collection of tropical palms, cycads, and a butterfly habitat garden!

Spend a Day in the Valley of a Thousand Hills

For a day trip like no other, take the road towards Pietermaritzburg to the Valley of a Thousand Hills. The valley is pretty big, but part of it can be reached within just thirty to forty minutes from Durban.

The PheZulu Safari Park, just a forty-minute drive from the city center, is a must for anyone who hasn’t been to the area before. Sure, it’s organized for tourists, but it offers an authentic taste of Zulu heritage and culture.

Surrounded by endless hills, you’ll hardly believe you’re just a short drive from the city. The iconic Gasa Clan performs Zulu dance shows four times a day, at 10 am, 11:30 am, 2 pm, and 3:30 pm, for the equivalent of $10 for adults and $6 for kids.

You can even hop on a guided open-air 4X4 game drive for as low as $15 per person!

Ride a Traditional Rickshaw on the Beachfront

Along the Golden Mile, close to North Beach, Dairy Beach, and Bay of Plenty Pier, you’ll spot men dressed head to toe in traditional Zulu outfits, pulling rickshaws on wheels. These vibrant rides might be a tourist attraction, but this doesn’t take away from how fun and unique the experience can be!

As a kid, I always loved chatting with the drivers and hearing fascinating stories about the area’s history of rickshaws and Zulu culture. Rides cost around $5 for a ten-minute lap, and I advise you to tip your driver generously.

Pro Tip : There are only a handful of these hand-pulled passenger carts wheeling around the Durban beachfront these days, so make sure to arrive early to secure your seat.

Eat Your Heart Out with Curry

Durban is home to the largest population of people of Indian descent in Africa. In fact, the city is often called the ‘largest Indian city outside of India,’ so it’s no shock that Indian cuisine forms a huge part of Durban’s food scene.

The curry here is as authentic as curry gets. Make sure to try a traditional mutton curry, a local favorite.

Another famous street food is called Bunny Chow. To clarify, there is no bunny in this chow. Instead, bunny chow is a large roll (or sometimes a whole loaf of bread) hollowed out and filled with curry. Bunny chow costs as little as $2 to $3 per massive serving and is traditionally eaten with one’s hands.

Pro Tip : Food is typically spicy in Durban. If you can’t handle the heat, make sure to specify a ‘Cape Town Mild’ for no chili or ‘Durban Hot’ for plenty of spice.

Try Your Hand at a Curry Cooking Class

On the topic of curry, one of my favorite things to do in a foreign city is learning how to cook a traditional meal. There are a few cooking schools worth mentioning, including Gecko Culinary Adventures in Morningside, the Fusion Cooking School in Westville, and The Curry Queen in Hillcrest.

Depending on how experienced your instructor is, cooking classes start at around $10 per person per hour. Considering you usually get to eat what you cook, this is a small price to pay for a new skill and a meal!

Treat Yourself to a Spa Treatment at the Oyster Box Hotel

If there is one place worth splurging for a massage in Durban, it’s The Oyster Box. This iconic five-star hotel overlooking the Indian Ocean in Umhlanga has one of the country’s top-rated spas, with extensive health, beauty, and wellness treatments.

A two-hour full-body experience costs around $150, while a basic one-hour reflexology massage costs $70.

Pro Tip : Make sure to arrive early for your appointment. When you book a treatment, you can also access the spa’s relaxation room, plunge pool, and rain shower. The Hammam ceremony room can be reserved for an extra charge.

Head to the South Coast for a Beach Day

Just a 45-minute drive south of Durban’s city center, Durban’s South Coast is one of the most beautiful parts of the KZN province. Unlike the busy city, the streets are safe, and the water is clean here.

Some of the most popular South Coast towns include Scottburgh and Amanzintoti. A little further along the N2 highway, Margate and Port Shepstone are around an hour and a half drive from Durban. These small towns offer a totally unique feel from the bustling streets of Durban and are well worth a day trip.

Spend a Day in Umhlanga Rocks

If you aren’t staying in Umhlanga already, I highly recommend spending time in this pristine neighborhood pocket. Located just north of the city center, Umhlanga is one of Durban’s most opulent neighborhoods, with some of the city’s best beaches, shopping, and nightlife.

While you’re there, make your way to the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve, Whalebone Pier, and Umhlanga Arch for a bit of shopping. When the sun sets, Florida Road and Windermere Road in Morningside come alive with activity and are lined with great bars and clubs to grab a nightcap.

Durban is famous for its incredible surfing conditions, which are only made better by the temperate water temperature and year-round warm weather. The best beach to learn to surf at is Addington Beach in the city center, where small waves and warm water make for the perfect beginner conditions.

Rent a board and book a lesson at Learn 2 Surf Durban Surf School. A two-hour group lesson costs $30 per person. Or you could opt for a private one-hour lesson for $16.

Pro Tip : Before booking, find out if board and wetsuit rentals are included in the lesson price. Wetsuits aren’t always necessary, but they can make the experience more comfortable.

Watch a Soccer Game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium

With its iconic ‘arch of triumph’ and unique lighting, Moses Mabhida Stadium is a jewel along the Durban beachfront. Built to accommodate soccer fans during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it’s now a defining landmark of the city’s skyline.

Fourteen years later, the stadium still hosts various sporting, cultural, and social events. If your trip coincides with soccer season, I recommend watching a soccer match live at the stadium. Tickets start as low as $5 per person but get pretty expensive for better seats.

My travels in South Africa span more than a decade. I’m therefore extremely well placed to highlight all that’s great and good about South African destinations including Durban from the viewpoint of visitors like you.

When it comes to location, Durban has it made. Firmly positioned on South Africa’s east coast, this port city developed around a string of long and attractive sand beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

The region around Durban has been inhabited for at least 100,000 years. It only reached the attention of Europeans in 1497, when Portuguese golden age explorer Vasco da Gama sighted it on his way to India. It then passed through multiple hands until annexed by Britain in 1844.

Today, Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city. Alongside its beaches, it contains a blend of natural and manmade sights which range from exquisite cuisine to fascinating museums. Come for the sun, sea, and sand, but stay for the culture.

To provide you with a little helping hand, here are my pick of the 15 best things to do in Durban.

1. The Golden Mile

Durban isn’t the getaway of choice for South Africans for nothing. You won’t need much convincing that the city’s Golden Mile is the best place to head. It stretches out from the Central Business District (CBD) to form several beaches backed by an attractive promenade filled with cafes and restaurants.

Like most of the Golden Mile’s beaches, South Beach is watched over by lifeguards most of the year. It’s also protected by shark nets. Its slightly calmer atmosphere makes it a good choice for families looking to enjoy the sand or water temperatures of 22°C. Neighboring North Beach is best known for its waves, which attract surfers and bodyboarders from right around the world.

2. uShaka Marine World

When it’s time for a change from the sands of the Golden Mile, head to uShaka Marine World. Although primarily known as a water park, most agree that its slides don’t come anywhere near comparison with its aquaria, which total 4.6 million gallons and contain 10,000 distinct species of sea creature.

Putting rivals to shame, the aquaria at uShaka Marine World incorporate the largest single tank in the southern hemisphere. Its viewing windows run for 500 meters through four different ‘shipwrecks.’ Each offers insight into an alternative marine environment. Species you’re likely to encounter include sharks and manta rays, alongside turtles, seals, and even penguins.

3. Port Natal Maritime Museum

Just across the bay from uShaka Marine World is the Port Natal Maritime Museum. Maintaining the old name for the city – which was changed in 1835 – the museum has Durban’s elegant harbor as a backdrop. Its exhibitions span hundreds if not thousands of years of seafaring in the region.

The stars of any visit have to be the boats and ships which can be boarded and explored. It’s not just little kids who’ll enjoy pretending to be the captain of the minesweeper SAS Durban or NCS Challenger while discovering the tiny rooms which together made these ships function.

4. Umgeni River Bird Park

Once a water-filled quarry, Umgeni River Bird Park now has tropical flora spanning 3.5 hectares on the opposite bank of the Umgeni River to the city. It provides a home for approximately 800 birds belonging to 200 species, including the only examples of their kind in Africa.

Birds to look out for range from owls and hornbills to vultures and macaws. Many play a part in the daily shows which take place at the outdoor auditorium. Still more can be seen hatching and being raised by the park team, including increasingly rare wattled cranes.

5. The BAT Centre

Nothing to do with flight, the BAT Centre is a community arts project found on Durban’s Victoria Embankment. It consists of a clutch of individual brick buildings containing small independent art galleries, alongside a performance hall, places to grab a bite to eat, and stores selling a mix of traditional and contemporary art from KwaZulu-Natal province.

A not-for-profit center looking to celebrate the artistic heritage of the city, the BAT Centre is without doubt the best place in the city to discover the diversity of arts and crafts on offer.

6. Durban Botanic Gardens

Durban Botanic Gardens is the oldest formally laid out botanic gardens in South Africa, with a foundation date of 1849. A mix of local South African plants and exotics from around the world, it boasts specimens from a variety of floral kingdoms.

Among them are orchids, palms, and cycads (ferns). But covering 15 hectares, there’s also a sunken garden established in the English style and displaying a colorful array of flowers, a butterfly habitat garden, and a naturally-fed lake that’s the perfect spot for a picnic on any of Durban’s multitude of sunny days.

7. Mini Town

A knee-high version of the city beyond its perimeter walls, Mini Town is a retro (turning to kitsch but in a good way) attraction close to the beachfront at Snell Parade. Recreating Durban in miniature, Mini Town contains versions of all the city’s main buildings of note.

What makes Mini Town extra special is the attention given to the functioning railway, and its harbor. Complete with its own moving tug and ship, it contains over 200,000 liters of water.

8. KwaMuhle Museum

To my mind, the KwaMuhle Museum is the most important and most interesting of all Durban’s exhibition spaces.

This museum of apartheid, and its forerunner, the ‘Durban system,’ has been sensitively situated in the building once hated by non-white South Africans – the Department of Native Affairs. It was here that the passes which had to be carried by everyone entering the city were issued.

The museum details all this with its collection of documents, photographs, videos and items belonging to ordinary South Africans. Refusing to hide away from the horrors of the apartheid system, KwaMuhle Museum plays a vital role in educating the generations born after the release and election of Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s first black president.

One of South Africa’s most ethnically diverse cities, Durban’s population is made up of Zulu people in addition to a significant number with British and Indian descent. Blending their cultures over decades, Durban has a culinary scene unlike any other city in South Africa. And you don’t have to spend big to enjoy it.

The city’s oceanic location means fish is always a good bet, whether it’s deep-fried in the British style or covered in flavorsome spices originating from the Indian subcontinent. For dishes specific to the city, look out for Bunny Chow – a curried mixed vegetable stew traditionally served in a hollowed-out loaf of bread.

10. Moses Mabhida Stadium

Built for the 2010 FIFA soccer world cup and named after a leading anti-apartheid politician, this stadium in Durban isn’t just for sports fans. As well as hosting soccer, cricket, and rugby union matches, the stadium doubles as a playground for adventure sports lovers.

The arch which spans the 55,000 seater arena incorporates a 550 step ‘adventure walk’ leading to a viewing platform 106 meters above the ground. There’s also a funicular to reach the top for those who don’t fancy the walk. Beyond the views of Durban and the Indian Ocean, the platform provides the perfect spot to watch daredevils fling themselves from the arch on the bungee swing which flings them 220 meters across the pitch.

11. Dick King Statue

The Dick King Statue is another remnant of Durban’s past located on Victoria Embankment. A bronze equestrian statue, it honors the actions of Richard Phillip King in raising the alarm over the possibility of the Boer attack on the city in the 1840s.

Riding for 10 days between Durban and Grahamstown, King covered around 125 kilometers a day, whilst so sick some days he couldn’t even ride. Reaching Grahamstown all the same, he was able to mobilize a British force which saved the city from attack and led King to become part of the history of Durban.

12. Durban Natural Science Museum

The grand columned exterior of the Durban Natural Science Museum should be enough to attract most visitors to its doors – part of Durban City Hall. Entering through a wide stone staircase lined with thick red carpeting, the museum’s displays are no less impressive.

Focusing on the living planet, the museum is a treasure-trove of animals stuffed in former years, from birds and mammals to insects and reptiles. Its displays extend as far as ancient Egypt, with the mummy known as Peter Amen, and one of the most complete skeletons of a dodo there is anywhere.

Know anything about South Africa and you’ll know its people love sports. The city of Durban certainly isn’t any different, making attendance at one of its major sporting events a great way of getting under the skin of the city.

Kings Park Stadium is the home ground of the Sharks rugby union team, with most games in the domestic league taking place during the country’s winter months (June to September). At other times of year, there’s also the chance to catch cricket at Kingsmead Ground, and soccer at Moses Madhiba Stadium.

14. Old Court House Museum

This museum occupies one of the oldest remaining structures in central Durban, with its ironwork veranda and cream-yellow stone windowsills making for an intriguing addition to the surrounding office blocks.

Built in the 1860s, inside visitors will find a collection totaling some 10,000 individual items. Together, they help tell the story of the area and its people through good times and bad. Further interest is provided through the fact that the building was regularly frequented by Mahatma Gandhi while he acted as a lawyer in the city.

15. Phoenix Settlement

Durban’s connections with one of the greatest men of the twentieth century don’t stop with Old Court House Museum. The Phoenix Settlement, a few miles north of the CBD, was bought by Gandhi in 1904. It was here that he began the switch from lawyer to freedom fighter.

The settlement acted as a test bed for a series of ideas, from communal living to the policy of non-violence which would see Gandhi nominated (unsuccessfully) for a Nobel Peace Prize on more than one occasion. The house where Gandhi lived during this time has been fully restored, and can be visited as part of the Inanda Heritage Trail.

Durban, located on the eastern coast of South Africa, has a rich and diverse history shaped by various influences. Here’s an overview of the history of Durban:

Early History: The area where Durban is situated was originally inhabited by indigenous communities, including the San and Nguni people. These groups lived off the land, engaging in fishing, hunting, and farming.

Colonial Era: In 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama sailed along the eastern coast of Africa, but it was not until 1823 that Europeans established a permanent presence in the area. In that year, a small group of British traders established a trading post and named it Port Natal. The British sought to establish a settlement to facilitate trade with the Zulu kingdom and the interior of Africa.

The Arrival of the Voortrekkers: In 1838, the Voortrekkers, Dutch-speaking farmers of Dutch and German descent, arrived in Natal after migrating from the Cape Colony. Tensions arose between the Voortrekkers and the Zulu kingdom, leading to the Battle of Blood River in 1838. The Voortrekkers emerged victorious, and in the aftermath, the British gained control of Natal.

The Establishment of Durban: In 1835, Port Natal was renamed Durban, after Sir Benjamin d’Urban, the governor of the Cape Colony at the time. The Jiran family, well-known hoteliers, created this trendily retro hotel from holiday flats above the Battery Beach pier in the late 1960s. It’s now perfectly positioned between the attractions of Suncoast Casino and the revamped skate park.

Laid-back and welcoming as the indoor pool that greets you on the ground floor, along with retro mosaic wall tiles and murals. Bedrooms are contemporary and sleek in cream and dark wood.

Holidaymakers after affordable beach breaks, budget-conscious conference-goers, wedding and school groups, and visiting artists.

The 262 newly renovated rooms and 14 family suites are spacious and most have balconies. You won’t get dressing gowns or turn-downs, but you will get all the essentials, from air-con to Wi-Fi and a Lindt chocolate on your pillow. All rooms command views of the city or sea.

The rate includes a great value breakfast buffet, while lunch and dinner buffets in the elegant Versailles Restaurant draw guests from other hotels. You can order crispy-based pizzas and sushi at the new Blue Dolphin Bar while the kids romp in a protected play area nearby.

Chill on a balcony watching the fishermen on Battery Beach pier and joggers, cyclists and skateboarders lacing the promenade. Join them and end with an award-winning cappuccino at Cafe’ Jiran three doors away. Otherwise hit the hotel’s squash court and sauna.

One of Durban’s original grand Victorian hotels, the 103-year-old Edward reclines comfortably above the revamped paddling pools and funfair, a nostalgic reminder of holidays past.

Graciously elegant without being stuffy, after a refurb in soft sea shades. A sophisticated mix of stripes and florals, sepia prints and botanical studies offsets the gilded frames and chandeliers.

Old Natal families and Zulu royalty, as well as politicians, business moguls and international travellers.

Most of the 101 rooms are sea-facing and have balconies except the family ones, for safety reasons. In the splendid Oppenheimer presidential suite (number 601), personal attention extends to framed photos of your family awaiting you alongside a welcome fruit platter.

Dine on classics like beef carpaccio, sole thermidor and malva pud under palms and a high pressed ceiling in the celebrated Brasserie Restaurant. An impressive Friday night curry buffet or Saturday night seafood one includes starters, desserts and a generous cheese board.

Bask on Wedge Beach or your balcony above the view by day, then leave valuables in your safe, pocket R150 for two and hit the beachfront. Ride the funfair cable-car, sip a Sex on the Beach under the stars at Joe Cool’s, and grab a Monster Cone at Milky Lane.

The cassata-coloured, art deco-style complex of the SunSquare and Suncoast Towers hotels and Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World anchor the northern end of Durban’s Golden Mile.

Fresh and relaxed as the deco-flavoured decor – curvaceous furnishings in pale wood, fluted white pillars, shell-patterned railings, and drapes and sofas in lickable ice-cream hues.

High-rollers to local hopefuls, plus holidaymakers, sports and soapie stars, Bollywood hotties, rockers (Eddie Grant) and comedians (Trevor Noah).

SunSquare’s 128 standard open-plan rooms are comfortable enough, but opt for the 37 luxury rooms and suites in Suncoast Towers. All have great sea views and the corner suites (ask for number 802) gaze down the Golden Mile to the lighthouse on the Bluff.

Jeera serves authentic Durban Indian cuisine that attracts even locals. Starters range from crispy bhaji salad to home-made samoosas and mains embrace curries and tikkas with all the trimmings.

Stroll the promenade to Moses Mabhida and ride the SkyCar. Unwind on a lounger on the lawns or in the Suncoast Spa (have the Sea Whisperer massage, a blissful blend of long Balinese strokes and Thai stretches).

The pool is on the small side, but an oasis when the beach is busy or blustery.

4. Elangeni and Maharani

These landmark beachfront hotels are being lovingly made over and joined into a single stylish 734-bedroom complex above the revamped Sunken Gardens, skate park and Mini Town.

Relaxed sophistication, especially in Maharani Tower, which resembles a boutique hotel with its sleek white reception area and chandeliers and well-appointed suites. The Elangeni refurb is still underway.

Local holidaymakers, a smattering of internationals, sports teams (Bafana Bafana, the Indian cricket team) and conference delegates.

The 285 Maharani Tower rooms and suites have the style edge at present and boast both baths and showers, but the 449 Elangeni units will catch up soon. All have free Wi-Fi and access to two gyms, three pools (one heated) and 11 restaurants and bars.

The attractive new Grill Jichana serves great aged steaks and rotisserie chicken. For light options, hit Vigour and Verve (first-class pizza) or Ocean Breeze Restaurant on the pool deck, Durban’s coolest new breakfast spot.

Hire a hotel bicycle (R50) and ride the promenade to uShaka or Moses Mabhida. Later sip a Panorama Sunrise or Sunset at Elangeni’s new Panorama Bar on the pool deck above the view.

The stairway from the Elangeni Towers car park doesn’t create the best first impression, but the refurb should reach there too.

5. Docklands Hotel

The flagship of Durban’s Point Development, it has been cleverly fashioned from Victorian warehouses overlooking Africa’s busiest port. What was once a red-light district is going green with scenic canals and attractions such as uShaka.

Slick and cool as the decor – public spaces feature exposed brick walls, duct-laced high ceilings and screed cement floors, while a central courtyard is softened by white pear trees and a water feature.

Young and happening, from business and political movers to the arts set – this has become a home from home for visiting jazz singers and DJs.

Compact functional rooms overlooking the courtyard or suites with balconies and dramatic harbour views – the pick is the deluxe split-level tower suite (number 416). Minimally but comfortably furnished, all are chic in monochromatic shades with red accents.

Look no further than Wodka, the doublevolume 70-seater hotel restaurant and bar. It has a funky industrial feel and serves fusion food plus tasty standards. The New York strip, smoked pork belly, and wild mushroom tagliatelle with Gorgonzola are winners.

Don’t go home before snorkelling over the reef off uShaka beach, visiting Sea World and Dangerous Creatures on uShaka Village Walk, or watching the sun set from Moyo at the end of uShaka Pier.

Standard rooms may feel cramped and there are no baths even in suites, but showers are spacious.

Durban’s Golden Mile

Durban’s new promenade, created for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, meanders six kilometres from Blue Lagoon at the Umgeni River Mouth to uShaka Marine World at the harbour.
