History of the Vienna State Opera

Geschichte der Wiener Staatsoper

The Vienna State Opera was built between 1863 and 1896 as the successor to the Vienna Court Opera. It was the first house on what was then the new ring road.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. At the time, however, the building was heavily criticized by the public and was considered an architectural disaster, leading the sensitive van der Nüll to commit suicide. Just two months later, Sicardsburg died of a heart attack, meaning that both architects did not live to see the completion of the building.

Inauguration with Don Giovanni by Mozart

The State Opera was inaugurated on May 25, 1869 with a premiere of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", in which the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sisi also took part. The opera served as the Imperial Court Theater until the end of the monarchy in 1918.

During the National Socialist era, there were numerous performance bans and members of the house were persecuted, expelled and murdered. On March 12, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by bombardment. The opera house was rebuilt from 1948 to 1955.

The Vienna State Opera has borne its current name since its glamorous reopening on November 5, 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Over the years, the Vienna State has been the scene of countless premieres and famous performances, in which stars of the opera scene regularly appear.

Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the leading and most important opera houses in the world and a cultural landmark in Vienna.

Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera offers a diverse program of operas and ballet works. The best-known names in opera create magical moments – in the opera house with the largest repertoire in the world.

The Vienna State Opera is one of the top opera addresses in the world, with first-class productions of the very highest caliber and a different program every day: around 50 operas and ballet works per season, danced by the Vienna State Ballet . The variety of the operatic program is unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Highlights of the 2023/24 season

Premieres are always eagerly awaited – this season features six operas Il trittico and Turandot (both by Giacomo Puccini), Le Grand Macabre ( György Ligeti), Animal Farm ( Alexander Michailowitsch Raskatow), Lohengrin (Richard Wagner) and Così fan tutte (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart).

There will also be a premiere of a children’s opera:   The Cursed Ghost Ship (directed by Nina Blum, to music by Richard Wagner) was conceived as a traveling opera through the building of the Vienna State Opera. Accompanied by a 13-piece stage orchestra, audiences will be immersed in more than just Wagner’s operatic cosmos.

In 2023/24, nine revivals are scheduled in addition to numerous performances from the repertoire: La clemenza di Tito (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), La sonnambula ( Vincenzo Bellini), Daphne (Richard Strauss), The Woman Without a Shadow ( Hugo von Hofmannsthal), La fanciulla del West (Giacomo Puccini), I vespri siciliani (Giuseppe Verdi), Medea ( Luigi Cherubini), Guillaume Tell ( Gioachino Rossini) and The Tempest ( Thomas Adès).

A highlight of the opera season is a reunion with star soprano Cecilia Bartoli when the Opéra de Monte-Carlo comes for its second guest performance at the State Opera in July 2024. There are also plans for a joint evening with Hollywood star John Malkovich .

The Vienna State Ballet is due to present two premieres at the Haus am Ring ( Shifting Symmetries , The Lady of the Camellias ) alongside the Nureyev Gala , all of which will be complemented by a varied dance repertoire.

International stars from Garanca to Flórez

In 2023/24, not only will Cecilia Bartoli be back on the stage of the Vienna State Opera, but opera lovers can also look forward to reunions with international stars such as Carlos Álvarez (as Michele in Il tabarro as Gianni Schicchi as well as Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West ), Juan Diego Flórez (as Arnold in Guillaume Tell , Alfredo Germont in La traviata and in a soloist concert), Elina Garanca (as Kundry in Parsifal ), Asmik Grigorian (as Turandot as well as in a soloist concert), Anna Netrebko (as Manon Lescaut as well as in a soloist concert), Erwin Schrott (as Scarpia in Tosca and Giovanni da Procida in I vespri siciliani ) and Pretty Yende (as Amina in La sonnambula ).

Subtitles at the push of a button

Audience members can individually switch on subtitles – in German, English, Italian, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. The 2,021 displays at the seats also offer information about the cast and contents of the performance (in German or English). By the way, the subtitles are shown manually by pushing a button, since no two performances are identical in terms of tempo.

Vienna Opera Ball

For one night of the year, the Vienna State Opera transforms into a large dance floor – for the Vienna Opera Ball , considered to be the biggest meeting point in Austria for artists, politicians and businesspeople from around the world. Over a hundred debutant couples in long evening gown and tails open the ball of balls.

Glorious architecture

During guided tours , you can take a peek behind the scenes of the mighty opera house. The State Opera was erected between 1863 and 1869 as one of the first prestigious buildings on the then newly-created Ringstrasse boulevard. The 120-meter long intermission halls of the State Opera connect to frame the main staircase. To the right of the stairs lies the Gustav Mahler Hall. Gustav Mahler left his mark on opera like no other during his ten years as Director - with an unprecedented opera reform.

Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera is an opera house and opera company based in Vienna, Austria. The 1,709-seat Renaissance Revival venue was the first major building on the Vienna Ring Road. It was built from 1861 to 1869 following plans by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, and designs by Josef Hlávka. The opera house was inaugurated as the “Vienna Court Opera” (Wiener Hofoper) in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. It became known by its current name after the establishment of the First Austrian Republic in 1921.

The members of the Vienna Philharmonic are recruited from the Vienna State Opera’s orchestra. The building is also the home of the Vienna State Ballet, and it hosts the annual Vienna Opera Ball during the carnival season.

Visiting Vienna

How can I buy cheap opera tickets?

Vienna State Opera House

It was Molière who said, “ Of all the noises known to man, opera is the most expensive” .

Turns out our French playwright was wrong. At least in Vienna.

If you thought a ticket to The Magic Flute would cost more than an actual magic flute, I have some good news: opera in Vienna is priced for everyone.

  • Cheaper seats may obviously sell out fast
  • …but check for returns on the day
  • …and look for the remarkably inexpensive standing space tickets
  • Book a concert experience * for your trip
  • Classical concerts in Vienna
  • How to save on sightseeing

Cheap seats?

Standing ticket office sign at the Staatsoper

(Sign outside the entrance to the standing area ticket office at the Staatsoper)

Visiting the opera is one of my recommended authentic Vienna experiences . You can, of course, spend a three-figure sum on a seat. But you don’t have to.

At the Staatsoper, for example, I’ve seen seats in 2024 as cheap as €15 for some productions.

So what’s the catch (apart from the possibility of a restricted view)?

Nice as low prices are, the three main Vienna opera houses don’t have unlimited capacities. So you usually need to book early if you want to buy the inexpensive seats.

The Staatsoper (state opera house) is the most popular venue, and ticket sales and pre-bookings typically start as soon as the season previews are out.

However, pre-bookings for later productions may be oversubscribed, and opera-hungry locals may also snap up the cheap tickets for redistribution to their private operatic circle of friends.

Even if a Staatsoper performance is seemingly sold out when you search for tickets, I suggest you try the ticket offices on the day in case of returns.

You might be lucky. I once got two tickets to Madame Butterfly just a month in advance for €30 total direct from the Staatsoper website (albeit with limited views).

Imagine: two tickets to one of Puccini’s famous works for about the cost of a cappuccino, double espresso and two pieces of cake in a neighbouring coffee house.

The standing ticket solution

Another way to experience Viennese opera cheaply is through a standing-room ticket (a “Stehplatz” ticket).

Staatsoper standing tickets

At the time of writing for the 23/24 season, you have three options for getting hold of one of around 435 standing tickets available for each performance at the Staatsoper :

1. Register for a federal theatre card with Standing roomPLUS

Get a free Austrian Federal Theatre card (German: BundestheaterCard) and pay the €20 upgrade for Standing roomPLUS (German: StehplatzPLUS).

This allows you to purchase one standing ticket per performance per card from a contingent online or at the box office from 10am the day before the event. The first four you book are free, then cost either €4 or €5, depending on where you stand.

I used this system to see La Bohème and, more recently, Carmen (with Elīna Garanča), Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (with Kate Lindsey), Cavalleria rusticana , and Pagliacci (with Asmik Grigorian).

2. Buy a standing ticket on the day

Standing area tickets go on general sale from 10am on the day of a performance.

Purchase these either online from the Staatsoper (you have to register and can buy a maximum of two per account) or at federal theatre box offices (I suspect these may also have a purchase limit per person but have no information on that).

The tickets currently cost:

  • €13 for the Balkon area
  • €15 for the Galerie area
  • €18 for the wonderful Parterre area

3. Buy on the day from the special box office

A contingent of standing tickets remains reserved for the dedicated “Stehplätze” ticket office (“Stehplatz-Kasse”) on the Operngasse side of the state opera house for the evening performances. That’s the southwest corner of the building.

This ticket office opens 80 minutes before the start of an evening performance, when you can buy standing-only tickets for that day’s production.

In previous seasons, you could only buy one ticket per person at the Stehplatz-Kasse. So everyone who wants to attend should be present when you buy the tickets, just in case. Prices are as for Option 2 above.

Check the Staatsoper service pages for full details and the latest situation on standing tickets (and the different box office location for matinee performances).

If you can, get a Parterre ticket. These have some of the very best views in the house: as central as it gets and just above stage height.

I’ve not stood in the Balkon and Galerie standing spaces. But the former looks to have a full view of the stage from much higher up than the Parterre, while the latter is up in the heavens and off to one side.

Whatever method you use to buy your standing ticket, you get to see a live performance in one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses for not much more than the cost of your average cinema ticket.

Now for some info and insider tips for those standing at the Staatsoper:

  • If all you want is a taste of the Vienna state opera experience, this is a cheap(ish) way to do it. Another alternative, however, is to take a guided tour
  • If the idea of standing for hours waiting for Isolde to finally keel over is not your idea of fun, fear not. The Staatsoper provides upholstered supports for you to lean on. Not only that, but small, unobtrusive monitors supply you with English subtitles to the libretto
  • Standing tickets include an allocated position number in the opera house, so you don’t need to reserve your place with a scarf or similar
  • A standing ticket entitles you to use the intermission bars just like any visitor. You can go to a bar before the performance and preorder drinks for the interval to speed up the process

Other opera houses

  • At the Theater an der Wien , standing tickets are currently unavailable as the main house is undergoing renovations until autumn 2024; performances have moved to other locations that don’t have that standing facility
  • At the Volksoper , you order standing tickets (if available) just like any other ticket and they typically cost around €3 to €8

All-in-all, then, it seems opera need not be as expensive as you might think.

So take that, Molière.

P.S. Here a few tips on what to wear .
