What Stevens Point Area Public School District families need to know before classes begin

S TEVENS POINT – Students and their families are preparing for the 2024-25 school year, which is set to begin in less than two weeks. We know purchasing school supplies, coordinating transportation plans and establishing schedules are crucial to those preparations.

Here are a few things parents, families and community members should know as the Stevens Point Area Public School District approaches its first days of class.

When is the first day of class in the Stevens Point Area Public School District?

Stevens Point Area Public School District students have their first day of school on Sept. 3.

Kindergarten, seventh grade and 10th grade students in the district must attend Aug. 29 for first day of school orientation.

More school start dates: When does school start for students in the Stevens Point area for the 2024-25 academic year?

What time does the school day start and end?

Start and end times vary by grade level and program. Elementary school students begin their days at 8:45 a.m. and end at 3:35 p.m. The junior high schools begin at 7:40 a.m. and end at 2:55 p.m. Stevens Point Area Senior High students begin at 7:35 a.m. and end their days at 3 p.m.

Junior high students are starting five minutes earlier this year to create additional time for targeted learning interventions, according to Sarah O’Donnell, district communications director.

SPASH is implementing a “modified block schedule,” which creates longer class periods on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The longer classes are intended to provide opportunities for more in-depth learning, O’Donnell said.

When are orientation days and open house times?

Kindergarten, seventh grade and 10th grade students must attend Aug. 29 for first day of school orientation. The district began holding these new-student orientation days for students entering new school buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic and found them to be beneficial. Senior high students also have a mentor program, which helps students transition to the new building and build connections with older peers, O’Donnell said.

Elementary and junior high schools will hold open house events Aug. 27 and 28. Specific dates and times for each building can be found on the district’s Back to School website . Senior high students could pick up their schedules, get their yearbook photo taken, receive their student ID, walk their class schedule, and find their locker during “registration week,” which started Aug. 19.

Where can I find school supply lists?

School supply lists can be found on the district website .

Are there new principals and administrators in the district?

The Stevens Point Area Public School District is welcoming a variety of new leaders to the district including: Cole Irish, principal of McDill Elementary; Chase Gildenzoph, principal of McKinley Elementary; and Crystal Armstrong, interim principal of Kennedy Elementary.

When will elementary school students meet their teachers?

Elementary school students will meet their teachers on back-to-school nights on Aug. 27 and 28.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Aug. 26, parents or guardians may find who their student’s teacher will be by logging onto the Skyward Family Access portal.

When will we find out bussing information?

Parents and guardians of both public and parochial schools may find bus route information through the district’s website .

When are breaks and the last day of school?

Students will enjoy about 22 days off throughout the school year, depending on which school they attend. Some of the most significant breaks include Thanksgiving break, Nov. 27-29; winter break, Dec. 23-Jan. 1; and spring break, March 24-28. The last day of school is currently scheduled for June 5.
