WTM 2023 Opening Ceremony, Morocco Stand

World Travel Market London 2023 opens its doors today with an extraordinary roster of over 4,000 exhibitors, including more than 14% new participants.

This event is held in the ExCeL London from November 6th to 8th, 2023. These new exhibitors represent a wide spectrum of travel-related enterprises, including well-known household names as well as niche and specialty firms. WTM London 2023 is attended by Travel And Tour World.

Several famous names stand out among the newcomers. Following its merger with Thalys, Eurostar, a famous European high-speed train operator, will showcase its services and new identity. The London-based live show ABBA Voyage, which will include the songs of the legendary Swedish band, will also make its premiere during the event, bringing a new entertainment layer to the tourist environment.

Bermuda Tourism Authority will return to WTM London with a stronger presence, seeking to boost Bermuda’s position in the UK market and highlight new advancements, including insights from Tracy Berkeley, the organization’s first female CEO.

Several tourism boards are making their first appearance at the event. Sabah in Malaysia, which promotes travel to northern Borneo, and Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, are trying to enhance their worldwide tourist appeal. Ayana Hospitality, which offers luxury resorts and hotels in Indonesia, and Vietnam’s Thien Minh Group will also be present. Other tourist boards participating include Egypt, Visit Samtskhe-Javakheti, Madhya Pradesh, and many more.

The event highlights UK-based firms such as Trip.com Group, which aims to develop in the European market, and HolidayBest, a package holiday specialist offering a wide range of destinations and vacation types.

Juliette Losardo, exhibition director of World Travel Market London, emphasised the varied spectrum of exhibitors, which included big destinations, boutique operators, and high-tech enterprises. This variety means that visitors, especially travel industry buyers, may network with new and existing clients, strike business agreements, and find inspiration for their future travel endeavours in 2024 and beyond.

world international travel mart

Staged annually in London, World Travel Market London - the leading global event for the travel industry - is a vibrant must attend business-to-business event presenting a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to UK and International travel professionals. It provides a unique opportunity for the whole global travel trade to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business. Who attends? More than 50,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international press, visit ExCeL - London every November to network, negotiate and discover the latest industry opinion and trends at WTM London. The event generates more than £2.5 billion of travel industry contracts. For many years, WTM London has organised World Responsible Tourism Day , with the support of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, This is the world's largest industry event focused on efforts to make the industry more responsible and sustainable. Each year leading figures from the industry, along with representatives of civil society and key organisations, gather to discuss the key issues facing the sustainable development of tourism. Many of these issues are directly reflected in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Tourism is also mentioned specifically in three of the SDGs: SDG 8 - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all - states that "By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products." SDG 12 - Ensure sustainable Consumption and Production patterns - calls for the world to "Develop and implement tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for sustainable tourism which creates jobs, promotes local culture and products."; SDG 14 - Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development - says there is an essential role for tourism, to "by 2030 increase the economic benefits of SIDS and LCDs from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism". In addition to these goals, tourism is able to support every other SDG - from action on climate change to improving gender equality and protecting biodiversity – and in 2017, marking the UN International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development, World Travel Market's responsible tourism programme featured panel sessions dedicated to examining what the industry can do to meet its commitments across a range of the goals. The World Travel Market Portfolio includes responsible tourism seminars at WTM London, Arabian Travel Market, WTM Latin America and WTM Africa. These seminars are part of the Events Programme for each show. WTM London forms part of the Reed Travel Exhibitions WTM Portfolio along with: · World Travel Market Latin America · World Travel Market Africa · Arabian Travel Market · International French Travel Market · World Travel Market Connect Asia · International Golf Travel Market.

Dubai plans to move its busy international airport to a $35 billion new facility within 10 years

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, will move its operations to the city-state’s second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches “within the next 10 years” in a project worth nearly $35 billion, its ruler said Sunday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s announcement marks the latest chapter in the rebound of its long-haul carrier Emirates after the coronavirus pandemic grounded international travel. Plans have been on the books for years to move the operations of the airport known as DXB to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central which had also been delayed by the repercussions of the sheikhdom’s 2009 economic crisis.

“We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn,” Sheikh Mohammed said in an online statement. “Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub and its new global center.”

The announcement included computer-rendered images of curving, white terminal reminiscent of the traditional Bedouin tents of the Arabian Peninsula. The airport will include five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, the announcement said. The airport now has just two runways, like Dubai International Airport.

(AP Photo/Kamran Jebreili)

The financial health of the carrier Emirates has served as a barometer for the aviation industry worldwide and the wider economic health of this city-state. Dubai and the airline rebounded quickly from the pandemic by pushing forward with tourism even as some countries more slowly came out of their pandemic crouch.

The number of passengers flying through DXB surged last year beyond its total for 2019 with 86.9 million passengers. Its 2019 annual traffic was 86.3 million passengers. The airport had 89.1 million passengers in 2018 — its busiest-ever year before the pandemic, while 66 million passengers passed through in 2022.

Earlier in February, Dubai announced its best-ever tourism numbers, saying it hosted 17.15 million international overnight visitors in 2023. Average hotel occupancy stood at around 77%. Its boom-and-bust real estate market remains on a hot streak , nearing all-time high valuations.

But as those passenger numbers skyrocketed, it again put new pressure on the capacity of DXB, which remains constrained on all sides by residential neighborhoods and two major highways.

Al Maktoum International Airport, some 45 kilometers (28 miles) away from DXB, opened in 2010 with one terminal. It served as a parking lot for Emirates’ double-decker Airbus A380s and other aircraft during the pandemic and slowly has come back to life with cargo and private flights in the time since. It also hosts the biennial Dubai Air Show and has a vast, empty desert in which to expand.

The announcement by Sheikh Mohammed noted Dubai’s plans to expand further south. Already, its nearby Expo 2020 site has been offering homes for buyers.

“As we build an entire city around the airport in Dubai South, demand for housing for a million people will follow,” Dubai’s ruler said. “It will host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors.”

However, financial pressures have halted the move in the past. Dubai’s 2009 financial crisis, brought on by the Great Recession, forced Abu Dhabi to provide the city-state with a $20 billion bailout.

Meanwhile, the city-state is still trying to recover after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the UAE , which disrupted flights and commerce for days.

WTM London 2022 heralds huge increase in buyer attendance

An incredible number of travel professionals walked through the doors at World Travel Market last week, with over 35,800 people participating – exceeding expected attendance – and presenting over double the attendance than that of 2021.

One of the key attendee types at WTM London is global travel buyers – individuals with direct purchasing responsibility for travel product. This year, buyer numbers were up 25% compared with 2021. This significant increase is a direct result of ongoing efforts by World Travel Market to map and engage the global buyer audience – reflective of a post pandemic world – homing in on the detail that ensures they receive a flawless event experience.

Specific elements laid on for travel buyers included 1-2-1 speed networking, access to a luxury Buyers Club lounge, fast track entry, a concierge meeting service, as well as an integrated diary function within the official WTM App – all ensuring their time at the event was well spent.

In addition to that, WTM London saw ministerial representation from 55 nations across the world – up 15% on 2021, 165% increase in exhibiting personnel versus 2021, and over 1500 media in attendance – representing over 70% increase on 2021.

2022 attendance at WTM London showcases a sector in recovery and demonstrates an appetite to do business and meet face-to-face.

Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director, WTM London, said: “Attendance at this year’s World Travel Market was fantastic! WTM London is a microcosm of the travel sector – where participation mirrors industry sentiment – it’s encouraging to see this level of engagement as tourism reaches towards full recovery – and of course demonstrates the importance of face-to-face events.

“We doubled down on creating an event which prioritised buyers, business deals and trading, and initial results seem to show that we met that goal – which we’re thrilled about.’’

“That said, we don’t rest for long – and have no room for complacency. We’ve already started work and planning to ensure 2023 will be better than ever!”

Mexican film wins top prize at Moscow International Film Festival while major studios boycott Russia

MOSCOW — A Mexican film has won the top prize Friday at the Moscow International Film Festival, which took place as major Western studios boycott the Russian market and as Russia's war in Ukraine grinds into its third year.

“Shame,” a film by director Miguel Salgado and co-produced by Mexico and Qatar, was the most highly awarded film at the festival, which began in 1935 and which has been held annually since 1999. This year’s edition included more than 240 films from 56 countries.

In his victory speech, Salgado hailed the festival as one of the most important in the world, adding that he was pleased to see his film, a thriller, being shown so widely and that it was a “great gift” to see so many people moved by it.

Festival program director Ivan Kudryavtsev told state news agency ITAR-Tass that more than half the entries this year came from countries whose governments are considered unfriendly to Russia.

After Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022, major studios in the United States and many European countries halted distribution of their films to Russia. The cutoff was a significant blow to Russian movie theaters. Before the conflict started, the country’s cinemas received about 70% of their revenue from Hollywood films, according to news reports.

The festival program included several smaller films from the United States, including “Hundreds of Beavers,” billed as a supernatural tale of a 19th Century fur trapper’s battle with the animals, and “Enter the Clones of Bruce” about the exploitation films that followed the death of martial arts legend Bruce Lee .

Movies from other countries opposing the war in Ukraine include Romania, France, Italy and Germany.

The head of the jury for the festival’s main award, the Golden St. George, was Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, from NATO member Iceland, whose “Children of Nature” is the only Icelandic film ever nominated for an Academy Award.
