3 Week Road-Trip Around France

A three-week road-trip around France gives you vast opportunities to take in much that France has to offer. With charming bustling cities and small quaint villages, you’ll get a whimsical adventure with many popular tourist sights and local attractions for a well-blended road-trip.

Sacre Coeur and Montmartre

In all its splendor, France provides visitors some of the most dynamic scenery and medieval landmarks and more. From its sunny coastal shorelines to its lush estate-vineyards. While on a three-week road-trip you’ll see that there is more to France than only popular tourist attractions such as the stunning Eiffel Tower and the lovely Louvre Museum. You’ll get to experience France in a different way and explore different areas.

3 Week Road-Trip Around France | What to see in France #travel #trip #vacation #france #paris #whattodoin #riviera #normandy #road-trip

3 Nights in Paris

1 night at mont-saint-michel – normandy, 2 nights at amboise – loire valley, 3 nights in bordeaux, 1 nights in carcasonne, 3 nights in nice – french riviera, 2 nights in avignon – provence, 2 nights in annecy, 3 nights in colmar – grand est, 1 night in paris.

Here is our suggested 3-week road-trip itinerary:

Eiffel Tower, Paris France

When traveling to France, Paris is the first place that most people land after a flight and this city boasts some of the most beautiful scenic landmarks, cultural museums, fine dining restaurants, and iconic outdoor sculptures that are a must-see while in Paris.

There is so much to do in Paris. For your 2-3 days visit to the city I recommend seeing:

  • The Eiffel tower
  • The Arc de Triomphe
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral Sainte-Chapelle
  • The Musee du Louvre
  • Paris’s well-known oldest and fashionable district Le Marais.

Paris has so much to offer and will give you a well-grounded starting point for a great road-trip adventure around France.

Mont-Saint-Michel, France

Since you’ve become acquainted with Paris, you’ll have fallen in love with France by the city alone. After you have finished your sight-seeing and explorations of Paris you can head to Mont-Saint-Michel (around 4h30 drive) and continue your road-trip at the Northwest of France and begin to work your way down.

As a UNESCO site, the island commune Mont-Saint-Michel is a picturesque and highly visited place. We recommend you stay for the night as it is typical for this gorgeous architectural marvel to be covered in rain or mist. Upon arrival, we could barely make out the outline of Mont St Michel, but fortunately, the mist had lifted, and we could make the most out of our explorations before heading off mid-morning.

Amboise, France

After spending a few hours at Mont Saint Michel, it is time to tackle your 3h30 drive to your next destination.

Located in central France, Amboise makes the perfect 2-nights retreat while on a road-trip around the country. There are several things to do in Amboise such as taking an early day tour of Château D’Amboise before you venture out and around Amboise to see some of the most spectacular castles in all of France .

Leaving Amboise early in the morning to make a start on the long 4-hour drive to Bordeaux.

This popular French city is best known for its gorgeous wines, but truth be told, this city is so much more impressive than just its connection to wine. It has elegant buildings, delicious food, beautiful gardens, and fascinating museums. Places to see include:

  • The Gothic Cathédrale Saint-André
  • Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux
  • The Grand Place de la Bourse
  • The Three Graces fountain that overlooks the Miroir d’Eau reflecting pool

Don’t forget to take a drive and visit some of the stunning vineyards around the city!

Today’s drive is a 3hr20 minute drive through Toulouse to Carcasonne. Carcassonne is spectacular! A beautiful hilltop town in southern France’s Languedoc area. Its popularity is due to its unique medieval citadel.

[Editor: Carcassonne is historically significant as the home of the Cathars, who were branded heretics in the 1200s and were defeated by a crusading Catholic army.]

Beach in Nice, France

Leave Carcasonne early in the morning so that you have time to make some pit-stops along the long 4hr30min drive to Nice.

Nice is an amazing coastal city and a popular place for tourists in the southwest of France. Nice is known for being well located along the French Riviera, boasts breathtaking pebbly beaches, French landmarks, cultural centers, and more.

While in Nice there are many places to visit such as the Promenade des Anglais, Parc de la Colline du Château, Vieille Ville, Musée Marc Chagall, Musée Masséna, Cours Saleya Market, Nice Cathedral and many restaurants. Nice is in a great location to drift away and visit nearby cities and towns such as Monaco and Marseilles.

Leaving Nice nice and early, enjoy an easy 1-hour drive to Saint-Tropez. Stretch your legs and enjoy a stroll to explore this beautiful coastal town. Our favorite area to explore is the beautiful cobblestoned quarter called La Ponche, together with the Old Port (Vieux Port).

Continue your drive (1-hour) and enjoy a bit of lunch stop in Saint Martin, before finalizing your driving (1hr30) for the day in Avignon. You will have one full day to explore this picturesque fortified city. The town is pretty small and easy to explore. Don’t miss the Palais des Papes, the remains of the St-Bénézet medieval bridge as well as some of the interesting museums.

Annecy, France

Enjoy the beautiful 4-hour drive to Annecy. Stops that are worth making include Ardeche, Grenoble & Aix-les-Bains.

On a road trip in France, you won’t want to miss seeing Annecy, France. Located in the southwest of France, Annecy is a whimsical town full of colorful buildings and homes which make it captivating for most.

As a beautiful medieval town with classic charm, Annecy is packed with tons of things that you do on your 2-night stay. From Lac d’Annecy to Jardins de l’Europe to Pont Des Amours (The Love Bridge) and Palais de l’Île an old-world palace and then prison. Annecy is stunning, and it is a great city to unwind for a few days.

Colmar, France

Leave Annecy early and enjoy a drive through Switzerland as you venture towards Colmar (4-hour drive).

The gorgeous town of Colmar is a marvel with classic cobblestone streets and canal-side neighborhoods. Bordering Germany, Colmar provides visitors with an array of historic attractions.

While in Colmar you’ll get to see all of its wonders like the Old Town & Place de la Cathédrale, Musée Unterlinden, Koïfhus, Ancienne Douane (Old Custom House), Eglise des Dominicains, Quartier de la Krutenau (Little Venice) and many more great attractions.

Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris, France

Nearing the end of your road-trip around France, you’ll be heading back to Paris to spend your last night before leaving for home (or your next adventure). The drive today is a really long 6-hour drive.

While in Paris you can wrap up your vacation by winding down, but you can still see great things in Paris before you leave. Paris is beautiful at night and you can rehash your city visit by seeing the Eiffel tower well-lit at night, you can go to Jardin du Luxembourg, see the fantastic Médicis fountain and the rues des Martyrs, visit the Picasso Museum or have dinner by candlelight on the Seine River. Paris doesn’t have to be expensive (see 8 Ways to Enjoy Paris on a Budget ).

In every nook of France, you can explore some of the most noteworthy regions from the north to the south of France. There are so many regional destinations that will give you a perfect scenic view of France, especially for seeing some of its most popular places like the gilded Versaille, the palaces and landmarks of Paris and country chateaus or the coastal shore at Nice. The possibilities are endless for getting creative in planning the best itinerary to get the most out of your France road-trip.

Nice (3 nights)

Nice

Nice is nice, no doubt about that. Located on the French Riviera known for its glitz and glamour, Nice is a blend of the old and the modern as it sits alongside the Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy a walk on the Promenade des Anglais that borders the sea blue water.

Explore the colorful Old Town with is small market Rest weary feet at the Place Massena, the city’s main square; there’s lots of nice squares surrounding it where you can shop for souvenirs. If you’re into art, Nice has several art museums of note, including those devoted to Matisse and Marc Chagall.

Monaco & Èze (day trip from Nice)

Eze

Comfortable walking shoes are a must for today’s day trip to Eze Village and Monaco. Pace yourself as you climb the steep cobblestone paths of Eze, a medieval fortress/castle that sits more than 430 meters (1,400 feet) above sea level. The climb is worth it: an unexpected cactus garden and stunning views of the Mediterranean at the top.

If it’s glamour you’re craving, you’ll find it in Monaco, a tiny sovereign state that is encircled by France and the Mediterranean. This is the principality where fairy tales come true, such as when its ruler made American actress Grace Kelly his princess. Monaco also is famous for its casinos, its upscale stores, fast cars and a harbor filled with fancy yachts.

Annecy (2 nights)

Haute Savoie Annecy

The journey to Annecy takes you from the Mediterranean to the Alps where the city is located just 35 km (22 miles) south of Geneva, Switzerland. Annecy is a pretty city located on the upper end of Lake Annecy, and has been described as the “Pearl of the French Alps.” It’s also been called the “Venice of the Alps” because of its two canals and river.

Top sights include the Palais de l’Ile along the Thiru River, which is now a historical museum, and the requisite castle, the Chateau d’Annecy. A picture-postcard Old Town, cathedral and lovely gardens also await you.

4. Chamonix (2 nights)

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

If skiing is your passion, then Chamonix is the place to go. Its slopes are famous the world over. Situated in the shadow of Mont Blanc, Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. But you don’t have to be a skier to enjoy this resort.

In summer, it’s popular with mountain climbers, hikers and golfers. The less athletic might want to take a cable car up Aiguille du Midi; the cable car is the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world. Chamonix also is famous for its Unlimited Festival, a mountain top music festival, in April and the Cosmo Jazz Festival in July.

Lyon (1 night)

Lyon

France’s third largest city, Lyon, Is known for several things: weaving fine silk fabrics, banking, its counterrevolutionary role in the French Revolution, its street art and, of course, its food. Lyon has been called the “gastronomic capital of the world.” You’ll definitely want to eat at a bouchon, a traditional Lyonnaise restaurant that serves sausages and duck pâté.

Take time to explore the Old Town, with its medieval buildings filled with historic atmosphere. If you’re there on December 8, be sure to take in the light festival that gave Lyon its nickname, “capital of light.”

Paris (1 night)

River Seine and the Conciergerie in Paris

Your three-week tour of France ends back where it started: the fabulous city of Paris. This is a good time to catch a couple of the sights you didn’t have time for before.

You might want to stroll through the Luxembourg Gardens, with its palace where the French senate meets and more than 100 sculptures and fountains, including the model for the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States. And don’t go home without trying some of the food Paris is famous for: fine pastries, chocolate, baguettes, duck comfit and steak frites.

The Best of Europe

Overall, had a good time on the tour courtesy of our experienced and friendly tour director Zsolt and highly-skilled driver Antonio. They were both very knowledgeable and friendly, providing many insights into the places we visited and lots of good humour as well. Despite a few unexpected issues during the trip, they worked extremely hard after hours to resolve them and ensure no disruption for the tour group. This was first tour my wife and I have done and we felt it allowed us to see a lot of Europe in a short period of time, with the trade-off being some very early starts and late finishes. To make the most of the tour, to will need to book the optional excursions as probably half the time on location is spent in some form of optional excursion. We found some of the local guides that are required to be used in Italy were not as good at leading the group as the tour director, leading to some confusion at times on the excursions. A few of the hotels felt a bit underwhelming in terms of location, food or broken amenities which could be due to the recent reopening from COVID but given we mostly were exploring throughout the days/evenings, the main issue with this was that some of the breakfasts were a little sparse. Altogether we found the tour quite enjoyable, with highlights for us definitely being Lucerne, Venice and The Isle of Capri. We would consider doing future tours with Cosmos, but given the pace of this tour and the amount of travel involved, we would likely pick shorter regional ones and do a few less of the optional night excursions to allow more time to self-explore.

Brilliant trip!.Because Intrepid do small groups we were able to get into the best locally run restaurants and really get to experience life like a local. We traveled by train and got to sit and chat with the locals (even picked up some top tips on where to go out) The tour leader was amazing, his knowledge of the 3 counties visited blew me away. He even booked us tickets to see Santana feat. Dave Matthews on the piano in a 2000yr old amphitheater in Nimes, something I would never had known about on my own. The tour was such a great mix of activities and free time. highly recommend.

Three Week Traveller

3 Weeks in France and Spain Itinerary

DISCLAIMER: This post might have links to travel services and products that we enjoy. We might make a commission from it at no extra cost to you.

France is a country located in Western Europe and is the largest exclusive economic zone in the world due to its many coastal territories. France is also known as the city of love and is famous for the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral.

The people are also well-known for their artistic inclination and diverse food, such as macarons, baguettes, and croissants. In this travel itinerary of 3 weeks in France and Spain, I’ll show you how you can cross the border with a rental car, bus, or if you prefer to travel via air.

Conversely, Spain is in Southwestern Europe, with the largest part on the Iberian Peninsula and the fourth most populous EU member state. Spain is well-known for its music and dance, particularly Flamenco.

It is also famous for its food, Mediterranean beaches, and football. Spain has many festivals year-round, which will be discussed in the itinerary below. These two countries in Southern Europe are definitely worth a visit at least once.

If you have the stamina, you might want to include Italy on this trip and plan a 3-week adventure through Spain, Italy, and France .

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO FRANCE AND SPAIN

4 images - Mallorca Beach, Eiffel Tower, Parc Guell, and Lavender Fields Provence - 3 Weeks in France and Spain Itinerary

Before you go on your trip, remember these things about visiting Spain and France. This list of information will give an idea of when is the best time to go, how much it will cost you, how to get around, and more travel tips.

When is the best time to go to France and Spain

The best time to go to France and Spain is either in the spring or early autumn season . During this time, there are noticeably fewer crowds, the prices are back to normal, and it’s neither too hot nor too cold.

The summer season in France is from June to August and also the peak season. At the same time, winter is from December to February. Monsoon in France is usually during October.

Conversely, in Spain, summer is from June to September, and the peak season is from June to August. The rainy season in Spain is quite long, from September through January, making the winter months the wettest months.

You can also look at our 3 weeks in Europe article, where we share six travel itineraries you can choose from depending on your budget. You can also check our list of best places for a summer trip or the best 3-week spring destinations .

Are 3 weeks enough for France and Spain

3 weeks in France and Spain isn’t enough; exploring them from top to bottom requires at least three weeks per country. However, there is no need to fret as I created an efficient list of all the must-see places in both countries so you wouldn’t miss out even if you stayed for a shorter duration.

If you prefer to travel to each country separately but have limited time, you can look at our 3 weeks in Spai n and 3 weeks in France travel itineraries. Then see if you want to do that or if you think you can combine both countries in one trip.

What to pack

The packing list for Spain and France trip will vary depending on the season you plan to go. The general idea is if you want to do lots of hiking, it’s best to pack good walking or hiking shoes. Bring a few swimming clothes, goggles, and sunnies if you want to spend most of your time on the beach doing water activities.

For those visiting religious sites such as cathedrals, bring modest clothing. We have a packing list for a 3-week trip , a separate p acking list for summer , what to pack for winter and a packing guide for spring .

How to get around

To maximize your 3 weeks in France and Spain, you must know how to get around these countries and cross the borders.

The most common and convenient way to travel in France is through SNCF, a state-owned rail network that is one of the best in Europe. It is fast and competitively priced, particularly if you booked in advance.

You could also explore France’s rural areas by bus, and if you want to arrive faster, you could opt to take a plane and catch a domestic flight. For those who wish to complete control of their travel schedule, you could rent a car instead. I personally used the train and found it a very scenic ride, primarily through the Alps.

The best way to travel through Spain is by taking a train called Alta Velocedad Espanola. For budget-conscious travellers, you could opt to use the bus instead, and for those on a tight schedule and willing to pay a more expensive fare, you could ride the plane rather.

Language and currency

French is France’s official language. People here don’t speak much English, so knowing common French phrases or using an online translator app would be helpful. The French franc is France’s currency.

Credit cards are widely accepted here, with Mastercard, Visa, and Maestro being the most common, but bringing cash is still paramount because some establishments don’t accept cards.

Spain’s official and most commonly used language are Spanish. Like in France, local English speakers usually can be found in touristy areas. Knowing the most frequently used phrases and having a translator app would be handy.

Spain’s current currency is Euro. It is advisable to bring cash, but some establishments accept credit/bank cards.

Average travel cost for 3 weeks in Spain and France

The interesting thing about going on a trip between these two countries is how the cost varies. Despite sharing a land border, the prices in France are significantly higher than in Spain.

Paris is one of the most expensive cities in the world. So if you’re on a budget, I recommend you try to see everything you want to see in 2-3 days. However, Madrid is also not too affordable, but it’s not as expensive as Paris.

On average, $2,000 is an excellent medium budget for 20 days in France and Spain. Accommodation will be the most pricey, especially for Paris. But you can offset that in other parts of the country.

For those on a shoestring budget, this itinerary can be done for $1,500 if you don’t mind staying in dorm hostels, using local buses, and consuming street food.

If you’re looking for a luxurious trip, $4,000 will do the job. You can splurge on luxury hotels, private tours, and dine at high-end restaurants. Don’t forget our breakdown of what a 3-week trip usually costs .

This number excludes the cost of flights to get to these countries and fly back home. You should also get travel medical insurance coverage to avoid spending unplanned expenses on your trip. It’s worth the extra money to have peace of mind.

Visa and COVID-19 protocol

France and Spain are members of the European Union and part of the Schengen States. This means that these two countries implement the same visa policies as the other members of the Schengen Area.

So, if you have a passport from the other EU nation, you can travel to these countries with freedom. Meaning you can enter and stay for as long as you want.

For those who hold a passport from most countries in America, Europe, the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, you can enter and travel to France and Spain for up to 90 days in 180 days.

But remember, the number of days stacks up. I mean that if you spend 14 days in Spain, cross the border to France. The counter doesn’t restart. Instead, it continues.

If your country is not listed here, this means that you must secure a Schengen visa in advance before your trip.

Other travel tips

I like booking half of the things in advance, such as the hotel where I’ll land and the car rental. This ensures that I have things ready when I kick off my trip. But if I’m going during the peak season, I book everything beforehand.

This is because France and Spain are both super famous with tourists worldwide. Leaving accommodating booking in last minute means I’ll pay more for such shitty hotels. Here’s a list of travel services I personally use and recommend.

Tour de France 2023: How to watch, schedule, odds and storylines you need to know

Tour de France 2023: How to watch, schedule, odds and storylines you need to know

The Tour de France returns Saturday for its 110th edition, this time beginning in Spain’s Basque Country, and will end on Sunday, July 23, in Paris. As always, the race — which recently got the “Drive to Survive”-style docuseries treatment on Netflix — will feature 21 stages. There will be eight flat stages, four hilly stages, eight mountain stages with four summit finishes, just one individual time trial (down from the usual two) and two rest days.

Here’s what you need to know to follow along:

How to watch the 2023 Tour de France

Peacock, NBC and USA Network will carry the Tour in the United States (NBC Sports and the Tour recently announced a six-year extension of their exclusive U.S. rights agreement, which now runs through 2029).

Peacock will stream every stage live and have daily pre-race shows. The streamer will also have stage replays, recaps, highlights, rider interviews and more, NBC Sports said.

Phil Liggett, a.k.a. “the voice of cycling,” will be on the call for his 51st tour, joined by analyst Bob Roll. Steve Porino and former professional cyclist Christian Vande Velde will also be reporting from on site, with the latter giving real-time updates while traveling the course on a motorcycle.

For the first time, NBC Sports’ broadcasts will feature clips from team radio, like communication between team directors and riders.

FloSports will stream the event in Canada.

How long is the Tour de France route?

This year’s route runs about 3,406 kilometers (about 2,116 miles). Stage 2, the longest single stage, is 209 km (about 130 miles).

The 22.4-km (about 14-mile) time trial will be held in the Alps in Stage 16.

How much money is on the line?

A total of €2.3 million (about $2.5 million) will be given out to the teams and riders, including €500,000 (about $546,000) to the winner of the overall individual classification.

How many riders are on the Tour?

Each of the 22 teams this year has eight riders, making for 176 total.

Recent Tour de France winners

  • 2022 — Jonas Vingegaard (DEN)
  • 2021 — Tadej Pogačar (SLO)
  • 2020 — Tadej Pogačar (SLO)
  • 2019 — Egan Bernal (COL)
  • 2018 — Geraint Thomas (GBR)

Riders to watch

This year is expected to be a two-man battle for the general classification between two-time winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), who emerged triumphant last year.

The 24-year-old Pogačar, regarded as the rider of his generation, was poised for a third straight title last year before Vingegaard, backed by a strong Jumbo-Visma squad, spoiled the campaign in the mountains. While the Slovenian Pogačar often has to fend for himself, the Danish Vingegaard, 26, has the backing of a “superteam” that includes do-it-all Belgian Wout van Aert and American Sepp Kuss to deliver him the yellow jersey.

Pogačar will undoubtedly be out for revenge, but questions are swirling about his fitness after he broke his wrist in a race earlier this year and had to miss some time. Whichever way the race goes, it’s always worth a reminder that this pair gave us an iconic moment of sportsmanship last year.

In the “last dance” category, we have British veteran Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), French fan favorite Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Slovakian sprint star Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies). All three plan to retire after the 2023 season (though Sagan said he plans to compete in mountain biking at the Paris Olympics).

Cavendish, 38, has 34 stage wins on the Tour — tied for the most ever with Eddy Merckx (who reached the mark in 1975). Cavendish is seeking one last win in his 14th Tour to retire as the record-holder after sitting out last year.

The 33-year-old Pinot won the young rider classification in 2014 and has since won three stages, most recently in 2019 (when he had to abandon the race with two stages to go after tearing a leg muscle while in fifth place).

Sagan, 33, owns a record seven green jersey wins and has won 12 stages, the last coming in 2019.

Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), the last man not named Pogačar or Vingegaard to win the Tour, will be in the peloton for the first time since 2020 after returning from a near-fatal crash in January 2022.

If you’ve followed the last few tours, you might also be wondering what’s up with Primož Roglič. The 2020 runner-up had to abandon the 2021 Tour before the ninth stage, and after starting the 2022 race as a Jumbo-Visma co-leader with Vingegaard, dropped out before the final rest day due to injuries. He did win the Giro d’Italia in May, but said he would take a break from racing to celebrate.

Beyond the general classification, you can monitor the additional races within the Tour: for the green jersey (points classification, generally considered a sprint competition) and polka dot jersey (king of the mountains).

China’s Xi Jinping begins first Europe tour in five years in France

Chinese president wants to repair ties with a sceptical Western Europe but faces questions over his stance on Russia’s war in Ukraine.

3 week tour of france

Chinese President Xi Jinping is on his first trip to Europe in five years, which is likely to be dominated by Russia’s war in Ukraine as well as economic strains between Beijing and Brussels.

The first stop will be France, with Xi due to hold talks in Paris on May 6 with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, before travelling south to the Pyrenees.

Eu’s von der leyen to urge ‘fair’ china competition in talks with xi, russia’s putin and china’s xi denounce us ‘interference’, is china’s economy in serious trouble, china’s xi warns west against economic ‘decoupling’.

After that, he will travel to Serbia and Hungary, two countries that have maintained close ties with Russia despite its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

According to Matt Geracim, the assistant director of the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub, the Chinese president is travelling to Europe with three goals: “repairing relations in Europe damaged by China’s support for Russia’s war on Ukraine, blunting the EU’s economic security agenda vis-a-vis China, and showcasing Beijing’s strong ties with its stalwart partners Serbia and Hungary.”

Here is all you need to know about Xi’s European tour, which continues until Friday.

The big picture

Beijing and Paris are marking 60 years since diplomatic relations were established, with France the first Western country to formally recognise the People’s Republic of China on January 27, 1964.

But the trip also comes amid a deteriorating global security climate, with the war in Ukraine now into its third year and at least 34,683 Palestinians killed in Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza .

France has said those two conflicts, particularly Ukraine where Beijing has professed neutrality but not condemned Moscow for its full-scale invasion, will feature prominently in the talks.

“Exchanges will focus on international crises, first and foremost the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement ahead of the visit last week.

Macron has recently emerged as one of the most hawkish of the EU leaders on the continent’s security, and he will be urging Xi to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine. In an interview with the Economist newspaper published last week, the French president argued the war was existential for Europe.

“If Russia wins in Ukraine there will be no security in Europe,” he said. “Who can pretend that Russia will stop there?” What security would there be, he asked, for neighbouring countries: Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania and others?

To underline the unity of the European position, von der Leyen will also join Monday’s discussions, which are due to get under way just after 11am (09:00 GMT).

As well as the Ukraine war, Europe is also concerned about Chinese business practices and has initiated an investigation into China’s subsidies for electric vehicle manufacturers , amid concerns such payments are undermining competition and harming European companies.

Macron told the Economist that he would also convey to Xi why Europe needs to safeguard its own manufacturers and industries.

Ahead of Xi’s departure last week, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Beijing was ready to “work with France and the EU to take this meeting as an opportunity to make the China-EU relations more strategic, stable, constructive and mutually beneficial, promote steady and sustained progress in China-EU relations, and contribute to the prosperity of both China and Europe and a peaceful world.”

Following Monday’s summit, Marcon and his wife, Brigitte, will host Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to a state banquet.

On Tuesday, Macron will take the Chinese leader to the Pyrenees mountains, where he made regular trips to see his grandmother as a child. The two couples are also expected to take a cable car up to the summit of the 2,877-metre (9,439 ft) Pic du Midi, a dark sky reserve.

After wrapping his trip in France, Xi will head to Serbia where he will arrive in Belgrade on the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Chinese Embassy for talks with President Aleksandar Vucic. Three people were killed when Washington said it accidentally struck the compound during the NATO air campaign against  Serb forces occupying Kosovo , in an event that triggered outrage and protests in China.

China has since emerged as the biggest single source of investment in Serbia, which is not a member of the EU, and prior to the trip Lin, the MOFA spokesperson, referred to the two countries’ ties as “ironclad”.

“The bombing remains a significant topic for Chinese officials, who use it to support narratives that question the values of liberal democracies,” Stefan Vladisavljev, programme director at Foundation BFPE for a Responsible Society wrote in an online analysis. “For Serbia, the visit presents an opportunity to strengthen its position as China’s main partner in the Western Balkans.”

Xi will then travel on May 8 to Budapest, the final stop on his European tour.

There he will meet Hungarian President Viktor Orban, the most Russia-friendly leader in the EU.

Hungary, whose policies have raised concern among other EU members, has become more closely aligned with Beijing and Moscow and recently signed a security cooperation agreement with China that allows Chinese police officers to work in areas where there are large populations of ethnic Chinese or which are popular with Chinese tourists, according to Zoltan Feher is a nonresident fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub.

Reports on such Chinese police stations have raised alarm in other parts of Europe, particularly among exiles and dissidents.

Hungary is also part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which it joined in 2015, and the two men are likely to discuss the ongoing construction of the high-speed rail between Budapest and Belgrade.

Ukraine war

Macron has spoken increasingly about the need to develop Europe’s own security architecture rather than rely on NATO and the US.

He has even suggested that France would be willing to send its troops to Ukraine, if Russia broke through the front lines and Kyiv asked for assistance.

China has long maintained it is neutral in the war, but Beijing and Moscow have deepened their ties since the full-scale invasion began, and Putin is expected to visit China this month.

Macron will be hoping to persuade Xi of the need for China to get more closely involved in efforts to secure peace as Switzerland organises a peace conference next month to discuss a 10-point plan put forward by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the end of 2022.

The Swiss say they have already invited more than 160 delegations, but it is not clear whether Beijing, which has also put forward a proposal for peace talks and deployed its own envoy in the region, will attend.

Russia has repeatedly dismissed the process, and insists a precursor for negotiations is that Kyiv give up the 20 percent of its territory that Russia currently occupies.

“We must continue to engage China, which is objectively the international player with the greatest leverage to change Moscow’s mind,” the French newspaper Le Monde quoted an unnamed diplomatic source as saying.

Human rights

Chinese state media have been reporting breathlessly on Xi’s arrival in Paris; the streets decorated with Chinese and French flags and groups of Chinese nationals welcoming their president.

But campaigners for Tibet and Xinjiang, where the United Nations says China may have committed crimes against humanity in holding some 1 million ethnic Uighur Muslims in re-education camps, were also out on the streets of the capital.

The EU imposed targeted sanctions on certain Chinese officials and companies over Xinjiang in March 2021, prompting anger in Beijing.

Human Rights Watch says while the French president did not raise the issue publicly on his visit to China last year, he should do so while Xi is in Paris and call for the release of those arbitrarily detained or imprisoned including Ilham Tohti , an Uighur economist who was awarded the Sakharov Prize, Europe’s most prominent human rights award in 2019.

The human rights organisation said Macron should also raise the issue of Tibet, where some 1 million Tibetan children are being placed in boarding schools and separated from their language and culture, and Hong Kong, once the most free territory in China but now subject to two draconian security laws.

“President Macron should make it clear to Xi Jinping that Beijing’s crimes against humanity come with consequences for China’s relations with France,” Maya Wang, the acting China director at Human Rights Watch said in a statement. “France’s silence and inaction on human rights would only embolden the Chinese government’s sense of impunity for its abuses, further fuelling repression at home and abroad.”

On April 30, Macron was pictured at the Elysee Palace with Penpa Tsering, the president of the Tibetan government-in-exile, on the sidelines of a ceremony to honour former Senator Andre Gattolin, a longtime supporter Tibet, who was awarded the Legion d’Honneur.

Tibet protesters rally in Paris as Xi Jinping arrives. They have placards reading 'Free Tibet' and are carrying Tibetan flags. There's a statue behind them.

Penpa Tsering presented the French president with a signed photo of his 2016 meeting with the Dalai Lama and “urged him not to forget Tibet”, according to a report the Central Tibetan Administration.

“We understand that the agenda between the two presidents will be dense given the many international crises such as in Ukraine and in the Middle East, but this must not be done at the expense of exchanges on human rights, which are in a deplorable state throughout the country as well as in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet, where a latent conflict has been going on for over 60 years and poses a threat to regional and international security,” Vincent Metten, the EU policy director for the International Campaign for Tibet said in a statement.

In Freedom House’s 2024 report on Freedom in the World, Tibet’s overall score was zero out of 100; the lowest in at least eight years.

Maryse Artiguelong, the vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), said: “The conflict in Ukraine highlights the threat posed to international order and security by authoritarian regimes such as Russia and the People’s Republic of China. Their aggressive foreign policies and repressive domestic policies are inextricably linked: Anyone who does not oppose China’s human rights violations risks one day facing its aggressive foreign policy.”

China’s president arrives in Europe to reinvigorate ties at a time of global tensions

President Xi Jinping arrives at Orly airport

PARIS — Chinese President Xi Jinping kicked off a three-country  trip to Europe  on Sunday with the continent divided over how to deal with Beijing’s growing power and the U.S.-China rivalry.

European carmakers are losing ground to  subsidized Chinese electric vehicles . Diplomats fret about  alleged Chinese spies  in European capitals. And China’s continued defense trade with Russia worries anyone in Europe who supports  war-ravaged Ukraine  and fears that the Russian army won’t stop there.

But Europe and China have hefty economic ties — EU-China trade is estimated at 2.3 billion euros per day — and Xi appears determined to rebuild and deepen relations with European leaders after a prolonged absence prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Xi started Sunday in France, whose president wants Europe to have more  economic and strategic independence  from other world powers. Then the Chinese president heads to Serbia and Hungary, both seen as China-friendly and close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and recipients of substantial Chinese investment.

Xi’s trip will be closely watched in Washington for signs of diminishing European support for its key foreign policy goals. At the same time, there’s increasing uncertainty in Europe about future U.S. support for trans-Atlantic allies.

Xi was greeted at Paris’ Orly Airport by French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal — and by protests by groups demanding that France pressure China to respect Tibetan and Uyghur minority rights. Activists seeking a free Tibet attempted to unfurl a banner Saturday beneath the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and protested in the French capital around the same time as Xi’s plane landed.

After arriving, Xi said he hoped the visit would bring "strategic convergence" between China and France, and that further developing their relations would contribute to ‘’stability and positive energy in an turbulent world,’’ according to a text provided to reporters at the airport.

On Monday French President Emmanuel Macron will treat the Chinese leader to formal honors of a full state visit. They will also meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is expected to join Macron in pushing for fairer trade policies and for China to use its leverage with Russia to push it toward ending the war in Ukraine.

The EU launched an investigation last fall into Chinese subsidies and could impose tariffs on electric vehicles exported from China.

China claims neutrality in the Ukraine conflict but has refused to call the full-blown Russian assault on its neighbor an invasion, and has been accused of bolstering Russia’s capacity to produce weapons.
