Day 1 - Day 1: Arrival + Check-in

Head to Acuatico Beach Resort in Laiya Beach, Batangas to begin your vacation. After arriving at the resort, enjoy the welcome drinks and check in to your Alta Vista Room. Settle in and enjoy the rest of your day at the resort.

You can head to the beach to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea, or you can take advantage of Acuatico Beach Resort's facilities including a fitness center, a game room, and the Simona Spa.

Day 2 - Day 2: Free and Easy

Have a fun beach day at the resort by trying different kinds of activities. You can rent a kayak for free and paddle in the ocean, sunbathe in one of the beach loungers or swim at the resort’s pool.

If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, you may try the water activities that the resort offers, including banana boat riding, flyboarding, jet skiing, fly fishing, and speed boat riding. Note that these activities may come with a fee.

You can also enjoy spa treatments at your own expense or work up a sweat at the fitness center. 

Day 3 - Day 3: Departure + Check-out

Enjoy your complimentary breakfast and lounge at the beach or enjoy more activities before heading back to your room to pack your belongings. Check out of Acuatico Beach Resort. Booking Information - Upon booking, please expect an email from Guide to the Philippines for the voucher, reminder, and next steps.

Hotel - Standard check-in time is 1400H and check out time is at 1200H. Requests for early check-in and late check-out are subject to availability and fees. Refundable incidental deposit is required upon check-in. Guest/s are required to present a valid credit card guarantee or cash deposit. Bookings for one person will be arranged in single rooms, and bookings for two or more people will share a twin/double, or triple room(s). Children will be arranged in the same room with their parents. If additional room(s) is needed and for special requests, additional costs will incur. Child rate includes existing bed sharing arrangements with adults and complimentary tour/s (if any). Maximum of 2 children per room. Child rate is exclusive of daily breakfast and to be paid directly to the hotel.

Peak Season Bookings - All bookings passing through December 24 and 31 are required to avail of the mandatory Christmas and New Year's Eve Dinner. Prepayment is required and can be paid in advance through Guide to the Philippines or direct to the hotel on the day of check-in.

A relaxing break by the beach.”

We stayed at the Acuatico Beach Resort for three nights and had a very relaxing time. Our room had a great view over the pool and poolside bar and also a fantastic view of the sea. The room was a good size, clean and with all required amenities. The infinity pool was excellent and we also made use of the sun beds on the private beach and swam in the sea with small fish around our feet. We chose to eat and drink by the poolside bar every night and were served by Rafael who was always courteous and polite and made us feel very welcome. All in all we really enjoyed our stay at the Acuatico Beach Resort.

Best Beach Resort in Laiya, Batangas”

Acuatico Beach Resort is one of the hardest resorts to book in Laiya, Batangas. They seem to be always fully booked so it was very lucky that I got a room during the days I wanted to stay there (it was the last room too!). It is definitely more expensive that most of the resorts in the area but you get what you pay for - great rooms, WiFi everywhere, friendly and accommodating staff, and I think the best infinity pool in the city.

We stayed at the Vista de Laiya and we had a wonderful view of the pool and beach. The breakfast buffet was delicious. Staff were very friendly and professional. The only thing is that you need to book well in advance as the property gets fully booked. Special thanks to the hotel manager, Cathy, and the General manager who extended their help regarding an incident with our vehicle while on Acuatico premises.

Yes, there are cheaper places. But none of those other resorts have the WOW factor of Acuatico! It's centerpiece infinity pool is worthy of all its praise, and more. But this one feature would be all for nothing, if it were not for its staff, who at all times were second to none. Always ready and willing to assist, no matter how trivial the request.

Acuatico is a multi-awarded luxury resort along the coast of Barangay Laiya. It has two main areas — the family-friendly Main Wing rooms and the high-end La Prima villas. The latter area is perfect for honeymooners and romantic getaways. The resort’s main feature is the beachfront infinity pool, providing gorgeous views of the beach.

Other facilities are the in-house restaurants and bars, spa services, indoor games, a kiddie playroom, a gift shop, water sports, and a gym.

Acuatico is one of the six properties in San Juan that have a Staycation-CAO, which means it’s allowed to accept guests outside the 18-65 age range. Kids and seniors are welcome, but certain requirements apply.

Acuaverde doesn’t have the infinity pool that Acuatico is best known for, but it remains among top choices especially for company outing, team building, and family getaways.

But what sets Acuaverde apart from other resorts is that it’s pet-friendly! It prides itself on being one of the most preferred pet-friendly resorts in Batangas. It has a dedicated zone for pets, different care packages, and even an exclusive pet menu. It also boasts having one of the widest beaches in Laiya, hosting different beach activities and lounge beds for relaxation. It also offers water sports like kayaking, jet skiing, flyboarding, and others.

Acuaverde features 32 rooms with air-conditioning, LCD cable TV, WiFi access, and a hot/cold shower. Other amenities are the in-house restaurant and bar, beachfront sunbeds, spa services, kid’s zone, and pet zone.

Day trippers are welcome too, but prior reservation and other requirements still apply.

Palm Beach Resort

If you want to get away from the crowd, consider Palm Beach Resort, which lies on a secluded coast, providing exclusivity and privacy. It’s also technically outside Laiya — it’s located in neighboring Barangay Hugom — but it’s still primarily marketed as a Laiya property since the term is now almost synonymous with the entire stretch.

It caters to families, friends, corporate outings, and couples. The rooms are fully furnished and many offer views of the beach. It features infinity pools, kiddie pools, jacuzzi, beachfront cabanas, outdoor and water sports, a multi-purpose pavilion, an air-conditioned function room, a restaurant, specialty dining experience, horseback riding zone, and team-building areas.

Palm Beach Resort is also among the six properties that can accept kids and senior citizens during the pandemic.

Paseo Verde Beach Resort

Address: Paseo Verde Beach Resort, Pook Magalang, Barangay Laiya Aplaya, San Juan

Paseo Verde Beach Resort offers a budget-friendly beachfront experience. The resort covers an area of over 6,200 square meters, housing several day trip native cabanas, casitas, overnight rooms, a private resthouse, a mini-park, and a swimming pool with a kiddie pool. Stilts Calatagan

Address: The Stilts, Barangay Sta. Ana, Calatagan

Calatagan is an open secret. It is one of the coastal towns in Batangas with fair sand and shallow waters, perfect for those with kids. The coast is lined with accommodation options, varying from rugged beach camp resorts to high-end resorts. The best thing about Calatagan is that it’s not as crowded as other resort towns in Batangas.

The Stilts Calatagan is a favorite venue for events, especially beach weddings. Don’t let the narrow and humble entrance fool you, because Stilts Calatagan is extensive! It houses three beaches (Serenity, Harmony, and Destiny), dotted with cottages, pavilions, and tables. It also has two swimming pool areas: the main pool and the infinity pool; both have kiddie pools. There are numerous restrooms, a restaurant, two huge parking lots, and souvenir shops. The resort also offers outdoor activities, water-related activities, and boat tours.

Aside from the above-mentioned accommodations, there are cabins and a couple of treehouses. But the most iconic feature is the cluster of overwater bungalows, connected by wooden boardwalks. Think of the water villas in the Maldives. Similar but not close, to be honest.

We have visited Stilts a few times over the years, the most recent of which was during the pandemic. And we always have a good time here.

Budget-wise, Stilts is on the higher end of the spectrum, but there’s a workaround for budget travelers — day tours. Or book an overnight stay if you’ve been wanting to do it anyway.

Stilts is one of the very few resorts in Calatagan that accept children and senior citizens. Additional requirements may apply.

Aquaria Water Park

Address: Calatagan South Beach (CaSoBe), Barangay Sta. Ana, Calatagan

Aquaria is a beachfront water park in Barangay Sta. Ana, Calatagan. Although the resort has a “water park” in its name, don’t expect colossal slides and thrilling rides. Think of it as an upgraded family-friendly resort with more prominent fun amenities.

The highlight feature is the three-story high slide with a six-foot-deep landing pool. Other amenities include swimming pools (cove pools), a fun kiddie pool, three dining places, cabanas, and rooms.

The resort also boasts a 500-meter stretch of sandy shore, so you can also enjoy the natural beachfront setting sunbathing, lazing around, or waiting for the glorious sunset. Aquaria Water Park is located within Playa Calatagan Residences, part of Calatagan South Beach, a leisure tourism estate developed by Landco Pacific Corporation.

For the more budget-conscious or budget-savvy, COCOONS might be the better choice! Also nestled in the 15-hectare Calatagan South Beach estate, Cocoons offers an out-of-the-ordinary lodging experience. The brainchild of Millennial Resorts, the “cocoons” are reminiscent of huge cylindrical concrete drainage pipes, transformed into unique colorful private nooks.

There are a total of 18 Garden Cocoons in the CaSoBe property, all fully furnished and with free WiFi. You may also access the amenities of Aquaria Water Park and the beach when you book your stay at Cocoons CaSoBe.

Altamare Dive and Leisure Resort

Address: Altamare Dive and Leisure Resort, Barangay San Teodoro, Mabini

Mabini is one of the resort towns in Batangas that underwent tourism development ahead of others; thanks largely to Anilao, one of its barangays, often regarded as the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines. Anilao is also the preferred jump-off point to Mount Gulugod Baboy and other nearby attractions such as Sombrero Island and Masasa Beach. In general, the shores of Mabini are mostly pebbly and rocky and lined with mostly dive resorts, but there are still regular beach resorts.

Formerly named El Pinoy , Altamare Dive and Leisure Resort caters to both divers and non-divers. It offers diving packages as well as other water-related activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, island hopping, and fishing, among others. It features an infinity pool, the Vista Lounge, massage services, a dive shop, a game room, a conference room, and an in-house bar and restaurant. All rooms are fully furnished.

Blue Ribbon Dive Resort

Blue Ribbon Dive Resort is a resort that serves divers and would-be divers. It may be small, but make no mistake, this PADI five-star dive resort has everything a diver and aspiring divers need. It caters to regular leisure divers, beginners, and even underwater photographers. It offers both introductory diving lessons and advanced diving courses. Aside from full-time instructors, the resort also brandishes having full-time certified divemasters.

The resort has a swimming pool, a bar and restaurant, and seven air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen TVs and digital cable, a hot/cold shower, personal safe, and storage closets. The room rates are inclusive of breakfast.

Bentrina Diving Resort

Bentrina Diving Resort is a no-fuss resort that caters mostly to divers, experienced and beginners alike. The rates depend on the package inclusions, which are usually customized to suit your preferences or what the course requires.

Vivere Azure Resort was once a family resthouse, hidden in a lush landscape between the sea and the mountain. The property faces the Maricaban Islands, nestled between Balayan Bay and Batangas Bay, presenting guests with panoramic views of the sea, the islands, and the sunset (for those staying overnight).

The House, hosting all the suites, is the most prominent structure in the property, but the main highlight is the infinity pool, overlooking the sea. Other resort amenities are the in-house restaurant, island hopping arrangement, adventure tours, diving activities, and watersports. The rates are inclusive of full-board meals.

Camp Netanya Resort & Spa

With the tagline “Santorini of Batangas”, the architectural design of Camp Netanya Resort & Spa is undeniably inspired by the structural aesthetics of Santorini, one of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Overlooking Balayan Bay and located near the Matu Point diving site, it provides perfect spots for sunset watching and diving. The swimming pools accommodate regular swimmers and those taking diving courses.

Matabungkay Beach Hotel

Lian is another coastal town sandwiched by two more popular resort towns — Nasugbu to the north and Calatagan to the south. But is more popular among local tourists. Lian’s beaches are usually covered with fine ash-colored sand. One of the well-known is Matabungkay, whose waters are freckled with floating bamboo raft cottages.

Nowadays, beach camping is slowly gaining popularity in Lian, especially among those looking for alternative beach experiences. But for those who don’t want to rough it out, there are well-appointed resorts around.

Matabungkay Beach Hotel has served regular guests and tourists, both local and international, for over 30 years. It’s good for couples, friends, and family as well as golfers. We have returned to Matabungkay over the years. We even spent a full six weeks here once as part of our job, when we used to work for an English camp. During our stay here, we shared the resort with foreigners visiting the country to play golf. It was January or February, so it was wintertime in their home country.

The resort has a spacious restaurant, a sports bar (billiards, darts, table tennis) and music lounge, a swimming pool, a souvenir shop, spa services, and a salon. It offers various aqua sports, basketball, volleyball, giant chess play area, beach cove hopping, helmet diving, bamboo raft ride, and diving, both intro and fun diving.

Besides beach houses and rooms, the resort also features water villas. It caters not only to beachgoers but also to corporate events, weddings, and other celebrations.

CML Beach Resort & Waterpark

Address: CML Beach Resort & Waterpark, Barangay Nonong Castro, Lemery

Lemery might not be the top of mind choice when you think about beach destinations in Batangas, because the sand here isn’t fair or fine. Lemery’s coast is strewn with black volcanic sand, which some might not find appealing, especially those used to white sand. To make up for this, many resorts’ marketing focuses more on the amenities, which have improved a lot through the years. Most are budget resorts and are local favorites.

One of the most well-known beachfront properties in Lemery is CML Beach Resort & Waterpark , a usual venue for company outings and events, and celebrations like weddings, birthdays and other parties. It has 21 rooms and suites, private cabanas, BBQ facilities, water park amenities, family and infinity pools, the beach, and an in-house restaurant. The highlight is the water park’s five-meter-high water slide.

New normal tips.

• Each municipality sets its own rules based on current local conditions. The policies, including travel requirements for tourists, differ per municipality. It’s best to check for updates with the LGU of your destination prior to your trip.
• Contact the resort before booking. The resorts also need to meet the LGUs requirements for them to operate, so they are usually briefed on the policies and updates. Some resorts also implement additional requirements on top of the government’s. Most of the resorts inform their guests of the latest requirements and protocols on their official websites and/or Facebook pages. Get in touch with the resort first to double-check the requirements before booking.
• Make sure you gather all the requirements. Have secured copies of the documents because some areas have checkpoints and they might ask for a copy. Although many areas don’t have checkpoints, it’s best to fulfill all the requirements to avoid delays and problems.
• Always comply with the COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Always observe physical distancing. Wear a face mask at all times except when eating or swimming. Wash your hands regularly. Make sure you bring alcohol, sunscreen, and other sun protection.
• Always check the inclusions and mandatories. Some hotels implement mandatory meals that are not yet included in the published rates. Again, we recommend contacting the hotel management and inquire about their mandatories.
• Some resorts offer day trips. If you are not planning to stay overnight, there are resorts that accept day-trip guests. Note that some destinations still require tourists to present booking confirmation from the resort.
• Avoid visiting on weekends and holidays as much as possible. Traveling on a weekday is relatively safer because there are fewer people, which means less contact with other guests.
• Some public beaches are open. However, they tend to get crowded because people can freely come and go.

The White   House Announces Public Tours and Media Preview of the White   House Gardens on Mother’s Day   Weekend

The White House will continue the tradition of welcoming members of the public to tour the White House Gardens and South Grounds. This spring the White House Gardens Tour will take place during Mother’s Day Weekend, with tours available to the public from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM ET on Saturday, May 11 th and Sunday, May 12 th . 

2024 White House Gardens Tour The White House Gardens Tour is free and open to the public; however, a daily timed ticket is required for all attendees, including small children. The National Park Service (NPS) will distribute free, daily timed tickets at a tent stationed outside the White House Visitor Center (1450 Pennsylvania Avenue NW) each tour day (May 11 th and 12 th ) beginning at 8:30 AM ET, while supplies last. The tour entry point for all guests will be located on 15th Street, NW between E Street, NW and Constitution Avenue, NW. Advance reservations are not available. The ADA entrance will be located at 15th Street, NW and Alexander Hamilton Place, NW.

Meghan Markle Admits She Is 'Missing My Babies' Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet on Mother's Day in Nigeria

Meghan Markle was thinking of her children on Mother's Day during her trip to Nigeria with Prince Harry .

The Duchess of Sussex, 42, admitted she was missing Prince Archie , 5, and Princess Lilibet , 2, on Mother's Day on May 12 during a brief speech at the State Governor House in Lagos. Her comments came during the penultimate stop on her final day in Nigeria, which kicked off on May 10. 

"I am very, very grateful, I am very humbled, and today is Mother's Day," Meghan said with a smile in a video shared to TikTok by Arochukwu Network. 

"So it feels appropriate, but though of course we are missing our children, I'm missing my babies, but it feels very appropriate to be in the motherland and amongst family," she continued, referring to her young son and daughter and her Nigerian heritage. "So thank you so much for the kindness and for these beautiful names. I'm very grateful and we can't wait to come back."

The Duchess of Sussex then handed over the mic and walked over to Prince Harry, who joined the audience in applauding her remarks.

"I'll skip the protocol because at this point we're all family. Firstly, thank you for welcoming my wife and myself to Nigeria. It's our first visit, certainly won't be our last," the Duke of Sussex said as the crowd cheered on, per a video posted to X (formerly known as Twitter).

Meghan and Harry, 39, packed a whirlwind agenda of engagements into their three-day stay in Nigeria, and the Duchess of Sussex wore a dress connected to her kids for the reception at the State Governor House in Lagos. The yellow floor-length Carolina Herrera dress Meghan wore was created for her when she was pregnant with Prince Archie, and she previously sported it for his first birthday in 2020 . Meghan wore the flowing gown again for her pregnancy announcement when she and Prince Harry publicly revealed she was expecting Lili on Valentine's Day in February 2021. 

The May 12 reception at State Governor House was attended by PEOPLE, and hosted by the Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, along with Nigeria's Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR, who invited Prince Harry and Meghan couple to visit the country. As seen in the TikTok video, Meghan also wore the green striped shawl she received as a gift from the governor's wife over her shoulder during her brief speech.

Though they didn't tag along, the Duchess of Sussex spoke about her children multiple times during the mini-tour of Nigeria. During their first outing to Lightway Academy in Abuja on May 10, where they spent time with school children, Meghan revealed that "singing and dancing" was Lili’s " favorite class ," probably because of “all the jumping around." Meghan added that Archie liked construction, as children showed off their robotic projects in a STEM class.

The next day, she spoke with candor about parenthood during a panel she co-hosted with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, focused on Women in Leadership.

"I love being a mom, I love being a mom," Meghan said in the wide-ranging conversation on heritage, motherhood, career building and more, musing on the elusive quest for balance later during the discussion on May 11.

"What I think that to mean now is that that balance will always change for you. That balance, what seems balanced 10 years ago, is going to shift. And so being a mom has always been a dream of mine. And I'm so fortunate that we have two beautiful, healthy, very chatty sweet children," Meghan said about Archie and Lilibet.

The Duke and Duchess of Susex advocated for mental health awareness and promoted Prince Harry's Invictus Games during their trip to Nigeria, which kicked off May 10 and concluded on May 12. Nigeria participated in the Invictus Games for the first time in September 2023, and the couple met with military families and Invictus-affiliated charity Nigeria: Unconquered during the trip, which included a solo stop at a military hospital for Harry.

The visit also celebrates Meghan's recent discovery that she is of Nigerian heritage. In 2022, she revealed that she learned she is 43% Nigerian through a genealogy test, and spoke about feeling a connection to the country throughout the tour.

While visiting Lightway Academy on the first day away, Meghan spoke from the heart to schoolchildren during the GEANCO Foundation’s inaugural mental health summit when she said, " I see myself in all of you ."

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Spend Their Final Day in Nigeria on the Polo Field

On their whirlwind three-day trip to Nigeria, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry put their focus on two of their biggest charitable endeavors, the Invictus Games and mental health initiatives through the Geanco Foundation. But during their final event on Sunday, they gestured to their next project for Netflix, a show about professional polo players, by taking a trip to a polo field in Lagos.

The couple spent the afternoon at Lagos Polo Club for a reception celebrating Nigeria: Unconquered, the charity that helps support wounded veterans from the country on their quest to make it to the Invictus Games. Meghan wore a dress by Johanna Ortiz and a pair of familiar Heidi Merrick sunglasses and Harry wore a dark suit. Together, the pair watched a polo match between two teams, Duke vs. Duchess, according to People . (Ultimately the duchess’s team won 5–3.)

Following in the footsteps of his father, King Charles III , Harry has long been an avid polo player, and on April 15, he joined his friend Nacho Figueras on the field for a match supporting his HIV/AIDS charity Sentebale. A few days before the match, Deadline reported that Harry is working on an unscripted Netflix series about polo, with Welcome to Wrexham ’s Miloš Balać, signed on as a showrunner.

Meghan and Harry’s trip to Nigeria came at the request of Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, the country’s minister of defense, who they first met at last fall’s Invictus Games in Düsseldorf. Nigeria sent their first team of wounded service members to those games, and a spokesperson for the ministry later said that Badaru decided at those games that he hoped Nigeria could host a future iteration.

Though Meghan and Harry appeared at a summit for student mental health during the tour, most of their focus was on the Invictus Games and the country’s wounded veterans. On Friday, Harry took a solo trip to Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna, where he toured six wards and shook hands with about 50 wounded soldiers, according to People .

Harry took the tour with David Wiseman, the Invictus Foundation’s director for international expansion, and during his conversations at the hospital, the prince encouraged the wounded to work towards representing their country at future events. Harry also spoke to Emmanuel Oyesigi, a sergeant recovering from a gunshot wound to the stomach, and called him “Mr. Lucky” for surviving the ordeal. “Anything that can help us is much appreciated,” Oysegi told the magazine. “It is good for morale to have him here.”

On Saturday, Meghan went on a solo engagement in the capital city Abuja, appearing on a panel discussion alongside Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization, where they discussed the importance of female leadership. In front of approximately 50 prominent women in politics, business, media, and culture, the duchess spoke about her excitement to be in the country—and her recent discovery of her own Nigerian heritage, thanks to a DNA test.

“Being African-American, part of it is really not knowing so much about your lineage or background, where you come from specifically," Meghan said, adding that she first reached out to her mother, Doria Ragland, when she got the test results. “It was exciting for both of us to discover more and understand what that really means.”

She also spoke about her search for balance between work and life, telling a story from the time when she was an actor on the show Suits, and an executive told her that it might be impossible to find. “What I think that means now is that that balance will always change for you,” she said. “That balance—what seems balanced 10 years ago—is going to shift. And so being a mom has always been a dream of mine. And I'm so fortunate that we have two beautiful, healthy, very chatty, sweet children.”

Record-Breaking Number of Road Trips Projected For Memorial Day Weekend

Buckle up. AAA expects a major weekend for air travel and especially road trips this Memorial Day.

A forecast from AAA estimates Memorial Day weekend travel will be up from last year with boosts in travelers across modes of transportation — but still shy of the all-time record set in 2005.

AAA expects almost 44 million travelers from Thursday, May 23, to Monday, May 27. That marks one million more travelers than in 2019, the year before the pandemic. 

“We’re going to start seeing heavy loads for the holiday weekend, as well as the summertime,” said Paula Twidale, AAA’s SVP of travel.

How Travelers Arrive

This year will be big for road trips: AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car, up 1.9% from the 2019 holiday weekend and the highest number since AAA started tracking in 2000. 

“I think distance, time, availability, and cost all play into the decision-making process. So we’re not surprised that the road trips are up 4% from last year,” Twidale said. She added road trips can offer families more flexibility.

Drivers will need to consider traffic when making their road trip plans. Some routes could take nearly 90% longer than is typical, according to Bob Pishue, an analyst at the transportation data firm INRIX. Gainesville to Tampa could take 88% longer. Other busier routes include Los Angeles to Bakersfield and Galveston to Houston.

Despite two global conflicts in oil-producing regions, this year’s gas prices are nearly in line with last year’s. The prices have stayed relatively steady in recent weeks, as well. 

“I don’t think that’s a deterrent at all,” Twidale said about the gas prices.

In terms of inflation more broadly, Twidale also doesn’t see a concern.

“I think they [travelers] are choosing where they want to go and how they want to spend those funds a little differently, but it’s not precluding them or preventing them from actually traveling.”

AAA anticipates that 3.51 million will be traveling via plane — a 9% increase from 2019, versus a 4.8% increase from last year. While slightly higher, flight prices also resemble those in 2023.

Other modes of transportation — buses, trains, and cruises — could be up 5.6% from last year. Cruise ports for Alaska itineraries are among the hotspots for travelers this year.

Where Travelers Go

The list of popular destinations hasn’t changed much. AAA booking data shows theme park and entertainment venues, like Orlando and Las Vegas, remain in vogue.

“Certainly sun-and-fun destinations, like in Florida with theme parks, are also always high on the list,” Twidale said. Fort Lauderdale, Southern California, and Miami were top picks, too.

More urban hubs draw visitors, as well. New York, Denver, and Boston are also traveler favorites. Those going abroad often opted for European cities.

“Internationally, it stays pretty consistent,” Twidale said. “London, Paris, Dublin, Athens… those have all been on the top of the list for a few years now. So I just think they’re just destination hotspots, and there’s always a desire to go. And people are still doing that, whether it be short term or long term.”

Beyond Memorial Day weekend, Asia — especially Japan — is making a comeback this year.

“I think people are feeling comfortable going further out, and we’re seeing some of those destinations that took longer to recover come back,” Twidale said.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.  

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”   

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.  

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.  

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.  

  Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”  

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro 

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.   

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.  

Travel Trends   

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:  

• Bucket Lists : Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips  
• Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips  
• Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan   
• Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves  
• Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours  
• Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe  
• Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific  

  Travel Agent Survey  

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:  

• Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips  
• 77% of agents say ocean cruises  
• 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations  
• 67% of agents say river cruises  

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology   

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.   

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.  

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.   

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period   

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.   

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology 

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

Meghan markle says she misses her kids on mother's day during nigeria trip, meghan markle i miss my kids on mother's day ... happy to be in motherland.

Meghan Markle was away from home on Mother's Day -- wrapping up her trip in Africa with   Prince Harry ... but longing for her children on the holiday, 'cause she said as much.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent their last day in Nigeria Sunday at an event at the Lagos State Government House -- and where she got on the mic at one point and addressed a crowd ... thanking them for welcoming her and Harry with open arms.

She also acknowledged the fact she wasn't with her kids -- Archie and Lilibet -- for the holiday ... but then said Nigeria wasn't a bad consolation, calling it the motherland.

She said, "I'm very, very grateful and very humbled. And today's Mother's Day -- so it feels appropriate, although of course we are missing our children, I'm missing my babies. It feels very appropriate to be in the motherland and amongst friends."

MM went on to thank everyone for being so hospitable during their 3-day visit -- which was meant to serve as somewhat of an unofficial royal tour ... where they attended a ton of receptions and met with a lot of locals too.

Of course, this is the sort of thing they used do while they were living in England ... before they left the Royal family and made their own way here in the States.

We know they're all in on entertainment and business ventures here -- but clearly, with this trip, they're also still engaged with the philanthropic side of things as well. Harry and Meghan said they'd be coming back to Nigeria ... gotta wonder where they might go next.
