‘Built-in wardrobes can also make the most of awkward spaces such as sloping ceilings or angled walls, providing ample storage for clothes and other items. You could even hide a desk space behind a cupboard door – something your child may not need now, but will need for studying as they grow up. By concealing as much storage as possible in your built-ins, you'll be able to keep everything organized and leave the rest of the floor space for the bed, relaxing and play.’

This could be neutrals, or it can be a tone of their favourite color that is perhaps a little more grown-up than they would initially choose.

Our Girls’ Farmhouse Bedroom Tour

Are you a sucker for a fun girls’ bedroom makeover? Me too — especially when they only cost $40!

At the beginning of the summer, the older 3 kids mentioned MAYBE switching their bedrooms around (again)!

Dave and I said we could probably make that happen, but we wanted to be SURE they wanted a switch before we moved everything around.

Well, by the time mid-July rolled around, they were still pretty excited about switching bedrooms, so we searched around for a few furniture pieces on Craigslist and Amazon, and finally made the switch at the end of July.

Dave helped me move all the furniture around before he left for a weekend trip with the older 3 kids, and I stayed home with Clara and put ALL the fun finishing touches on their rooms .

It was so fun to surprise them with their bedroom makeovers when they got home!

I’m thrilled with how well the rooms turned out (and how little money we spent to make the transformations). Of course, the kids are quite excited about their new spaces as well — especially since I added a few “bigger kid” items like desks and tables in their rooms!

I’m planning to share the boys’ bedroom reveal next week, but today it’s the girls’ bedroom makeover!

And I say “GIRLS'” (plural) because Clara will eventually be up in this bedroom as well. However, for now, it’s Nora’s room all to herself (yeah, she’s pretty excited!)

The hutch holds lots of craft and school items.

The desk was one thing she really wanted in her “new” room. We got a little tin of teal paint and painted the desk, a shelf, and a few other accessories.

And the bunk beds… these are the same beds we’ve used for several years already.

They are the MYDAL beds from IKEA but we purchased them on Craigslist, painted them white, and cut off the legs so they would fit with our sloped ceilings. We are VERY happy with these beds.

Not bad… especially considering we spent less than $40 on the whole room ($20 for the desk + chair, $12 for the teal paint, and a few bucks for accessories at the thrift store).

3 Super Quick Before/After Photos of our Girls’ Bedroom Makeover:

This room was SO “blue” when we bought the house, I still can’t believe how much we have transformed this space!

As you can hopefully see from the before/after pictures above, this bedroom was a massive project — probably our biggest bedroom renovation to date.

There was absolutely ZERO insulation in any of the walls. We raised the ceiling, rewired the whole room, added tons of insulation, added a 2nd heat duct, and then completely overhauled the paint, carpet, lighting, trim, and even added a second closet.

We are all SO happy with the results of our renovation, and I’m thrilled with how well this room has functioned for all 3 of our older children over the past 3 years!

Sigh… I’m tired just thinking about it all!

We took things we already loved about their room and incorporated some dramatic elements to really make it feel so different.

My girls love to read so we decided to keep these book ledges that were part of the original room.

One of our favorite part of the room has to be the new wallpaper from Rocky Mountain Decals . It took months to search for the perfect wallpaper for month. I wanted a sophisticated large scale floral and this wallpaper exceeded all of my expectations. I was nervous about installing a wallpaper but it was actually easier than I thought. This is a removable wallpaper so we were able to adjust it if we didn’t have the positioning just right the first time. It’s a two person job for sure but after we got the hang of it, it moved pretty fast. One really important tip we learned was not to skip the scraping step (using a little plastic tool to push the wallpaper onto the wall). Our walls have some texture and that extra step really helped reinforce the paper.

Another old piece turned new is their dresser. This dresser was my dresser from my nursery set (my mom actually kept the crib too). It was a dark cherry wood and you might remember but I first painted it a bright pink (see that here ). A little chalk paint and a whole lot of love and this dresser looks like a totally different piece. I already loved its character and now, in this clean crisp white, I love it even more.

The walls are painted a soft white to really compliment the floral wallpaper. The clean palate is what I needed especially with the shelves. I didn’t want it to look too busy and the white gives it a clean and simple look.

I wanted to have a little area of the room for the girls to hang their backpacks, purses and other little knick knacks. These adorable floral hooks add the perfect touch and continue that floral theme.

This room had to not only be beautiful but functional for these two young girls. Finding the perfect bedding was so important to me. I needed something that was durable, easy to wash, and looked great. I choose this gorgeous chic white style from Beddy’s bedding and I couldnt be more happy. Plus making their beds went from a chore I dreaded to something the girls enjoy doing themselves. The bedding has sides that zipper and so with one quick pull the beds are made and tidy.

The inside of the comforter is this super soft minky fabric. There are even extra side panels to make the comforter extra long so you are sure to have every bit of you warm under the covers.

Girls’ Bedroom Tour

We started this room over a year ago, and I actually have loved being able to take my time thinking through the layout and design for this room for our girls. This is a “bonus room” we converted into a bedroom for all three sisters to share! So how about a tour? Come on in!

Room Goals : I love working on children’s spaces because you can work with color and pattern in a bold and playful way that reflects the fun imagination of childhood. The goal was to keep it a whimsical and ethereal reflection of my girls. It was fun to get them involved in the color choices. Azelie’s favorite color is pink, and Veronica loves blues and greens. Chiara loves every color of the rainbow, so no challenge there!

Fresh slate : We started with replacing the old carpet and painting the walls, which made the biggest difference in brightening up the room. I chose the color Filmy Green by Sherwin-Williams as a good base for bolder hues and as a way to work in all the colors the girls love.

Wall Stenciling : I initially considered wallpaper for one of the main walls to break up the large areas, but I ultimately decided to try something less permanent this time. I found this botanical wall stencil set and used the color Alabaster by SW. This was definitely time consuming, but I actually loved the process. It was a good outlet during a time when everything else felt crazy.

Art Table : All three of my girls love art. They are coloring, crafting, or drawing every day. It became hard to find a place where they could create that wasn’t in the way of mealtimes. Bunk beds opened up more space in the room and allowed us to bring in this beautiful wood table from Article. They now use this table daily for art, sewing, or homework.

The set of four vintage art prints are from our shop Maris Home, the pattern scissors were a gift from a neighbor, and the art caddy I have had for years from Michaels. This is where they keep their colored pencils and other art supplies.

Scalloped Bookshelf : I had a scalloped-trim bookcase in mind from the start, but I could not find it within the U.S. for a decent price (why do all the unique furniture pieces seem to be in Scandinavia or Sweden??). I ended up finding some scalloped wood trim on Etsy. Using a paint spray gun, we painted this bookshelf along with the trim piece. After trimming the piece down to size, we attached it to the top using old wood glue and clamps. Now it pairs so well with the Bristol armchair , and the girls use this space as a little reading corner.

Daybed : Veronica wanted a daybed, and the IKEA Hemnes daybed was the best price we found. I also customized the daybed with the same materials as the wardrobe—wallpaper and wallpaper adhesive! ( Step-by-step process here .) While the wardrobe wallpaper has held up well, the drawers needed some extra support around the edges. I used a clear, wide tape to secure, and that has worked so much better! The spacious drawers are where we store all of their art books, notepads, keepsakes, and toys.

No closet, no problem : Since this was technically a “bonus room,” there were no doors or closets. After researching some ideas, we decided to go for the IKEA Pax wardrobes as a makeshift closet. They were time-consuming to assemble, but they are VERY spacious. I loved that these could comfortably fit clothing and shoes for all three girls. To customize these wardrobes, we used a paint spray gun and a textured wallpaper. ( See this post on customizing the IKEA pax wardrobes for details.)

This room is a constant lived-in mess now, which is how it should be! Seeing it used in the way I hoped it would has been the most gratifying part of this process. They use the open center of the room for sleeping-bag sister nights, dance parties, and forts. There are always dress-ups in every corner, stacks of books by the beds, and art scraps underneath the table. Our friend Joseph Bradshaw, who photographed the room, said it reminds him of Mary Poppins, and I think that may be the best compliment—ha! I kind of want to move in!
