Wooden Bridge Big Lebowski

Walter: “What'd he say? Where's the hand-off?” Dude: “There is no f***ing hand-off, Walter! At a wooden bridge we throw the money out of the car!” The “Wooden Bridge” in the middle of nowhere (196 Torrey Rd., Fillmore) is actually not wooden - the wood was added by the set decorators. But you can still visit the desolate location and you can go there with your driver. Just no funny stuff.

Bernie Sanders 2020 campaign office at Johnie's Coffee Shop

Diners loom large in Southern California films, and perhaps none looms larger than Johnie’s Coffee Shop (6101 Wilshire Blvd.), which is located across from the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and hasn’t been a functional restaurant for years. This is the location for the “family restaurant” where Walter is asked to keep it down, in spite of his buddies dying face down in the muck so that people could enjoy it without prior restraint. It is mostly used for filming (including Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs ), and in recent years it somewhat incongruously served as a colorful "Bernie Sanders for President" campaign office.

Exterior of Dinah's Family Restaurant

The pancake house where the Nihilists discuss business is the beloved Dinah’s Family Restaurant (6521 S. Sepulveda Blvd.), serving its famous fried chicken and all-day diner fare since 1959. Fun fact: the toeless Nihilist moll is played by LA-based, GRAMMY Award winning singer-songwriter Aimee Mann.

Palace Theatre Residences

Maude Lebowski’s artist loft is one of the historic residences located above the Palace Theatre at 630 Broadway in Downtown L.A. The interior of the Palace doubles as  Crane Jackson’s Fountain Street Theater , where the Dude’s landlord performs his wacky dance recital. In David Lynch's Mulholland Drive , the back of the Palace Theatre stands in as the entrance to Club Silencio.

Lobby of The Macarthur

Walter has every right to be very upset when he shows up at little Larry Seller’s house , but you definitely should not bother the residents of 1824 Stearns Dr., in the quiet area near where Crescent Heights Boulevard, La Cienega Boulevard, Venice Boulevard and the 10 Freeway meet. And if you happen to see a 1985 Chevrolet Corvette C4 parked on the street, please don’t destroy it.

Sheats-Goldstein Residence

The interior of pornographer Jackie Treehorn’s home is yet another world-famous Los Angeles property: the modernist masterpiece Sheats-Goldstein House , designed by famed architect John Lautner. The house has been owned for years by eccentric millionaire, basketball superfan, and serial model dater James Goldstein, who has promised to donate it to LACMA as its first architectural work of art.

LAX Theme Building

There’s a long history of movie villains living in Los Angeles modernist landmarks, as illustrated by the brilliant film essay Los Angeles Plays Itself (which every Lebowski , film, and architecture fan should see). The Sheats-Goldstein House is nowhere near Malibu, but Jackie Treehorn’s beach party was actually shot there, at Point Dume State Beach  on Westward Beach Road, not far from Bob Dylan’s long-time Los Angeles compound. (The Coens are hardcore Dylan-files, as Inside Llewyn Davis and their use of deep-cut gem “The Man in Me” in Lebowski attest.)

Point Dume in the final scene of "Planet of the Apes"

Finally, Donny’s ash-scattering ceremony takes place at the "Sunken City,"  located near the landmark Point Fermin Lighthouse in San Pedro. Goodnight, sweet prince.

‘the big lebowski’ turns 25: “people didn’t get it,” jeff bridges recalls.

The Dude looks back — and shares his behind-the-scenes photos — from the Coen brothers’ beloved take on L.A. noir. The film has inspired legions of fans, an annual festival and even a religion, but it wasn’t an instant hit in 1998.

From left Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi in the Coen brothers’ The Big Lebowski, which, despite getting a standing ovation at Sundance inset, was slow to earn its status as a cult classic.

Twenty five years ago, The Big Lebowski blew into theaters like a tumbleweed on an empty street.

Domestic audiences barely showed up, with the comedic detective tale only earning $18 million. Audiences gave it a B CinemaScore. Critics sniffed that it wasn’t as good as Joel and Ethan Coen’s last release, the Oscar-winning Fargo .

But that was just, like, their opinion, man.

Jeff bridges says he "resisted" becoming an actor at first due to anxiety, hollywood flashback: teen zendaya served up comic charm in 'frenemies'.

Coming near the end of the indie cinema wave, Lebowski stood out among the decade’s quirky, quippy crime dramas with a detective tale that upended all the L.A. noir tropes. Its tangled mystery — loosely inspired by Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep — didn’t much matter. Its shaggy stoner hero, Bridges’ “The Dude,” was mainly focused on getting his rug back. When characters drew weapons, they were intentionally made to look ridiculous instead of Tarantino-cool.

“There was something attractive about having the main character not be a private eye, but just some pothead intuitively figuring out the ins and outs of an elaborate intrigue,” Ethan Coen once said.

When he first read the script, Bridges recalls his surprise at how well he related to the character. “My first impression was it was a great script and I had never done anything like it,” he says. “I thought the brothers must have spied on me when I was in high school.” Half of the Dude’s clothes came from Bridges’ own wardrobe.

That said, Bridges was a bit concerned about playing “this big pothead.” “My daughters were preteen, and I was concerned I would set a bad example,” he says. “Being a child of a celebrity, I know what that’s like for a kid.”

“I remember John and I being concerned about where each ‘man’ was, where each ‘fuck’ was — there was a music to it, and we wanted to make sure we hit all the notes,” Bridges says.

That said, while he cannot swear to it, he suspects the Dude’s “human paraquat” insult “might have just popped out of my mouth.”

The resulting film operated on a delightful vibe all its own and, ever so gradually, the film garnered more and more fans thanks to midnight screenings, cable and home video. More than one critic changed their mind about it, with Roger Ebert adjusting his review in 2010 from three to four (out of four) stars.

Superfans (called “Achievers”) have attended an annual Lebowski Fest since 2002, and the film even inspired a religion (Dudeism). Turturro made an unofficial spinoff, The Jesus Rolls , in 2020.

The film has also been a reliable generator of revenue for its studio. According to Universal, the past five years alone have seen Lebowski outgross its original domestic release in home viewing revenue (it has made more than $100 million total).

For its devotees, and for Bridges himself, there’s something about the film that, well … abides.

Map: The Big Lebowski filming locations

Spoiler alert!

The classic cult flick The Big Lebowski celebrates the 20th anniversary of its 1998 release today, and the early-1990s Los Angeles period piece has probably never been more popular. The tale of The Dude, a conscientious objector, unrepentant slacker, and bowling obsessive who gets caught up in a complex high-society kidnapping, the movie shows off the highs and lows of Los Angeles real estate, from the one-bedroom Venice bungalow inhabited by the protagonist to the stunning Lautner-designed mansion owned by "known pornographer" Jackie Treehorn—the still-amazing Sheats-Goldstein House. Check out all the highlights—but watch out for spoilers—on the map below.

The Sheats-Goldstein house is a modernist masterpiece.

Inside the Big Lebowski house – a masterpiece donated to Lacma

The Sheats-Goldstein house will be left to the Los Angeles museum by the businessmen who bought and restored it with the original architect John Lautner

To get to architect John Lautner’s Sheats-Goldstein house in Los Angeles, you drive upward to where the Hills of Beverly become mere mounds compared with the vertical winding lanes of Beverly Crest. On a sharp turnout, there’s an empty lot with a dramatic view of Miracle Mile to the east and Century City to the west. An opening in the lush vegetation leads to a narrow and steep descent at the end of one of the most photographed houses in the city, which seems hidden amid greenery.

“There are almost no 90-degree angles in the house. John was very much opposed to a box-like approach to design,” explains owner James Goldstein, the septuagenarian businessman who just donated the house and its contents to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art . With a purchase price of $185,000 in 1972, the current bottom line comes to north of $40m, including the site-specific skyspace installation by light-and-space sculptor James Turrell , as well as artwork by the likes of Ed Ruscha and Kenny Scharf .

Goldstein hopes to inspire future architects by opening the house to the public through the museum (on limited occasions only while he still lives there), and help foster a greater appreciation for contemporary architecture. “I don’t understand why people give their art, worth many millions of dollars, and don’t think about giving their houses when their houses are a work of art.”

“Some houses,” Lacma’s chief executive, Michael Govan, corrects him. And the Sheats-Goldstein house is definitely one of them. Lautner built it in 1963 for Paul and Helen Sheats, respectively a professor and an artist. Thirty years earlier, the young architect was a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright , overseeing the construction of the Sturges house , a 1939 Brentwood residence that goes to auction on Sunday for an estimated starting price of $2m.

From 1979, when Goldstein brought the architect to the house, until Lautner’s death in 1994, the two rebuilt and adapted the house.

Although he partnered with Samuel Reisbord and Whitney R Smith in the 1940s on commercial projects such as Coffee Dan’s restaurants, residences were Lautner’s main focus throughout his career. Keeping with the mid-century tradition exercised by fellow Wright disciples, Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra , Lautner’s designs incorporate the terrain while striving to eliminate the distinction between outdoor and indoor.

Like Wright’s Ennis House (also overseen by Lautner), the Sheats-Goldstein house cascades down a canyon wall, offering stunning views while overcoming complex engineering challenges. His hillside Chemosphere house , built around the same time as Sheats-Goldstein, employs one simple column buried deep in the hillside to prop up a circular, pie-shaped structure.

In 1972, when Sheats put the house on the market, a dispute occurred with the buyer and Goldstein, a real estate investor, offered the asking price even though it was already in escrow. At the time, ratty shag carpet covered the living room floor, the master bedroom had turquoise-painted walls, and the view from the living room was crisscrossed with steel mullions.

Seven years later, Goldstein decided to replace the formica-and-plywood cabinets that adjoin the glass wall in the living room, so he called Lautner. “I could see the expression on his face. He was in deep shock,” Goldstein remembers. “John was happy to work on my specific project, and before it was even complete I saw what a change it was making in the house. And so I wanted to move on to more projects. It sort of happened step by step without a complete plan of what we were going to do. Interestingly enough, John Lautner never made a suggestion to me. I never knew what he was thinking. As soon as I came up with an idea, he jumped on it and gave me several alternative ways of doing it and always left it up to me to pick the ones I liked.”

From their first encounter onward, the house has been a work in progress. And when Lautner died in 1994 at the age of 83, his protege Duncan Nicholson took up the mantle, designing a tennis court, a nightclub (the scene of recent Grammy parties, as well as Rihanna’s birthday), and an entertainment complex, including a planned screening room as well as a lap pool, currently under construction.

Through the years, the house has become famous for star-studded Hollywood parties, and has seen a steady stream of photo and film shoots, notably The Big Lebowski , in which it stood in for a pornographer’s pad (the master bedroom includes glass walls that part with the push of a button).

Museums don’t often acquire buildings due to what can amount to astronomical maintenance costs. Luckily, Sheats-Goldstein comes with a $17m endowment. “One of the reasons I was so excited when we began talking about this house, is that this is an expression not just of design but also of an architect, John Lautner, who is one of the greatest architects of our time,” Govan said of Goldstein’s generous gift. “And as I’m fond of saying, no patron, no project. Without the patron, artists cannot work.”

Goldstein kept Lautner working continuously until the end of his life, his house ever-morphing around him. “I’ve never had any regrets,” he sighs. “I’m very happy with the way it’s turned out.”

  • Trivia In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, John Goodman stated that The Dude referring to The Big Lebowski as a "human paraquat" was one of the only improvised lines to make it into the final film. Virtually every other line, including every "man" and "dude," was scripted.
  • Goofs When The Dude is at Jackie Treehorn's and he rubs the pad of paper with a pencil revealing Treehorn's drawing of a naked man, The Dude tears the page off the pad and quickly crumples and shoves the paper into his pocket. Later while in the Chief of Police of Malibu's office and the Chief is going through The Dude's wallet, the same paper he tore off of Treehorn's pad is neatly folded in the wallet, with no sign of previous crumpling.

The Dude : [repeated line by The Dude and others] That rug really tied the room together.

  • Crazy credits Baby Wranglers: Howls/Giggles/Marmots
  • Alternate versions The version which premiered on USA Network in September, 2000 has been severely cut (aside from the usual edits for content). Among the story lines excised are virtually all the scenes involving Jesus Quintana (John Turturro), the private eye from Minnesota (Jon Polito) looking for Bunny Lebowski and the scene where Maud is trying to conceive The Dude's child.

A guide to the Sheats-Goldstein Residence

The Sheats-Goldstein Residence is one of L.A.’s most well-known homes—and works of art. Here we get a rare peek inside.

When we think of the most impressive residences in L.A.—and there are plenty—the Sheats-Goldstein Residence is definitely among the top spots. You’ve seen it in commercials, music videos and, most famously, as Jackie Treehorn’s home in The Big Lebowski , but there’s more to the abode than what we’ve seen onscreen. Its current owner, entrepreneur James Goldstein, is eventually gifting the property to one of L.A.'s most essential museums , the  Los Angeles County Museum of Art , but it remains a (mostly) private space today—which is why we feels so lucky to have been given a full-access tour of the property. Here is everything you need to know about the jaw-dropping design and architecture elements you’ll find at the John Lautner–designed masterpiece and more.
