REVIEW: Diamond Select INTO DARKNESS Action Figures

First announced back at San Diego Comic Con in July, Diamond Select Toys finally returns to the Star Trek arena with their new Star Trek Into Darkness action figures, the first Kelvin Timeline poseable character releases in almost a decade.

Measuring in at 7″ tall, the Chris Pine “Kirk” and Zachary Quinto “Spock” figures are styled as the characters appeared in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness , complete with film-appropriate hairstyles and Starfleet uniforms in the Michael Kaplan delta-pattern design.

Included with each is a standard-issue Starfleet communicator, tricorder, hand phaser, and Into Darkness phaser rifle, along with multiple hand options and variant energy rifles as well. Both rifles also come with translucent plastic “energy blasts,” which may be effective in from a head-on viewing angle, but mostly feel like half-baked add-ons that aren’t really worth using.

While the figures are incredibly adjustable — each has 24 separate points of articulation — they feel somewhat over-designed, as it’s not quite so easy to find just the right balance of joint angles and foot positions to have each character stand up straight, especially when holding one of the included accessories.

The overly-large, mid-chest break also is a pretty disappointing visual aspect of these designs — especially on the Kirk figure, with his bright yellow uniform — as it’s quite distracting and would be much more appealing to have a one-piece torso sculpt, even if it reduced the poseability by some minor amount.

That being said, when you find the right positioning, each of these figures can work out to be something quite special. The detailing on the phaser and other Starfleet accessories are really quite nice for their size, and the extreme articulation of the figures to allow for some pretty dynamic positioning for action poses.

The facial likenesses are also an extremely high point in these releases. While the Kirk figure only lines up to Chris Pine’s features from a few angles we could find, the Spock figure is a remarkable recreation of Zachary Quinto’s look — perhaps one of the best likenesses ever found in a Star Trek action figure.

It’s truly quite something how much this sculpt resembles the Kelvin Timeline Spock actor, right down to the furrow of his brow — and while a few stances do cause the facial look to seem a bit cross-eyed, the vast majority of viewing angles are dead-on Quinto here.

The detailing in the figures’ Starfleet attire is also quite nice — minus the mid-chest split already discussed – with the repeating delta pattern baked into the shirt mold, and brightly-painted rank stripes and boot buckles around the extremities. Each figure also comes with a transporter-pad themed display stand, honestly resembles the Deadpool logo more than anything.

While it’s not clear yet why these figures are based on the characters’ looks from Star Trek Into Darkness and not 2016’s Star Trek Beyond — we’ve reached out to Diamond Select on that point — it’s kind of nice to see that the Kelvin Timeline isn’t being totally forgotten, despite whatever the heck is going on behind the scenes at Paramount Pictures right now, a murky situation at best since things seemed to fall apart back in August.

If the line continues, seeing a larger-scale replica of Zoe Saldana’s Uhura or Karl Urban’s McCoy — or even Keenser! — would be nice additions for future releases.

These figures are available now as a two-pack at $49.98 through Diamond Select’s official store, and will be available individually through Amazon at the end of February for $24.96 each — you can preorder Kirk here , or Spock here.

Diamond Select’s next release is set for later this spring, as their deluxe Borg drone figure is expected to hit stores in March.

Diamond Select Toys has given StarTrek.com a First Look at its upcoming Star Trek: The Next Generation Lt. Worf Action Figure. Depicting the Klingon at his fiercest, the figure will come with extra arms, weapons and hairstyles, allowing fans to customize him in a variety of iconic poses. The product will also feature a diorama base that is compatible with the previous Star Trek Select release, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Diamond Select Star Trek Action Figures

Diamond Select is releasing a new line of 7-inch Star Trek action figures and they’re bringing two exclusives to Toys-R-Us.  The line of kicks off with Kirk and Spock from the original series.  They feature limited articulation and interchangeable parts.

With Star Trek on everybody’s mind again, thanks to the latest blockbuster film, Diamond Select Toys is bringing back Star Trek toys in a big way, to comic shops, specialty stores… and even Toys “R” Us! In addition to the previously announced TRU-exclusive assortment of Star Trek Legacy Minimates, DST is happy to announce that the iconic toy retailer will have their own exclusive edition of the two newest 7-inch action figures, Kirk and Spock! Depicted as they appeared on the original television series, Kirk and Spock each feature ball-jointed necks and shoulders; pivots at mid-bicep, wrist, waist and mid-calf pivots; and hinged elbows. As with the upcoming Star Trek Select versions, the hands, heads and legs are interchangeable between figures, allowing for greater variety in posing. Each figure comes with an exclusive terrain base, and the two bases fit together to form a continuous display. Art Asylum originated as an American toy design house and was founded by Digger Mesch and Donna Soldano in Brooklyn, New York in 1996. For its first five years, Art Asylum designed toys for Hasbro and for Playmates' Star Trek: Alien Combat line, among other projects. [1]

In 2007, the company was acquired by Diamond Select Toys LLC , an affiliated company of Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. , the distributor of many Star Trek replicas, toys, novelties, comics, and magazines.

Some later Trek products from the merged company bear the Diamond Select Toys (often abbreviated as DST) brand exclusively. A number of exclusive items have been retailed to the public through Diamond's monthly Previews catalogues and convention booths.

Star Trek releases [ ]

TOS, Wave 1 and Nemesis , 7 inch action figure assortments

Art Asylum premiered its first Star Trek products in 2001 while it was still an independent toy manufacturer. Releases have included three-inch "Minimates" figures, seven- and eleven-inch action figures, electronic "Starship Legends" starships, and life-sized "role-playing" accessories.

Art Asylum was among several companies that obtained licensing to produce Enterprise products during the initial airing of the series. Art Asylum also produced licensed products from other Star Trek series and films, with the exception of 2009's Star Trek and its sequels.

Art Asylum's toys differed greatly from those of its predecessors due to the use of computer scanning technology at Gentle Giant Studios to create highly detailed sculpts of props, costumes, vehicles, and people. For its line of Enterprise action figures, an innovative material called "Kreaton" was used to conceal the joints on the figures' limbs.

While the first waves were widely available at retail, Art Asylum's subsequent Star Trek product lines suffered from erratic distribution and were often restricted to online sales and sporadic retail availability at specialty shops. Following its acquisition by Diamond Select Toys, the company's Star Trek toys began to receive a wider distribution once again.

Diamond Comics also released IDW 's " Star Trek - Green Lantern: The Spectrum War Issue 1 " comic book with two exclusive covers in July 2015. It also distributes Eaglemoss Collections ' partworks and EMCE Toys ' products to retail in a number of countries.

The history and development of the Art Asylum Star Trek line was featured in the " Star Trek " episode of The Toys That Made Us in 2018 .

• While Art Asylum had intended to release the entire crew from Star Trek: Enterprise in standard uniforms as well as EV suits, poor sales led the company to skip ahead to Star Trek: The Original Series action figures. This left several figures unreleased. In 2002 a standard "Trip" Tucker action figure was released as an exclusive through online retailers, however neither figures for Dr. Phlox nor Hoshi Sato were ever released in their standard "Broken Bow" outfits.
• Similarly, poor sales led to the premature discontinuation of Enterprise 's "Away Team" line, leaving Reed and Mayweather EV suit figures unreleased.
• The Enterprise NX-01 vehicle was initially shown in advertisements including Archer and T'Pol figures, however, the figures were dropped before the product reached stores.
• Vehicle toys were originally planned to be "interactive" and to scale with one another. Art Asylum production staff had also hoped to produce alien vessels from Enterprise .
• The battle-damaged Enterprise refit toy features packaging labeled Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , yet displays damaged inflicted not only in that film, but the following film, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock .
• Molds for Art Asylum's "Trek Tek" phase-pistol were so accurate that the toys were used in the production of Enterprise as stunt or background props.
• Worf, Riker and Reman soldier action figures were planned for release in the Star Trek Nemesis assortment, however they were dropped when Paramount Pictures rushed the line to market.
• As of TNG Wave 3, transporter display bases were not included.
• The 2013 Enterprise -B toy issue made an interaction with live-action Star Trek almost a decade after its release, when it became featured as a lit display model in a display cabinet in the living room of Château Picard in the Star Trek: Picard third season episode " Hide and Seek ".
