When you're strolling the streets of Manhattan, it can be difficult to grasp the magnitude of the city, with its skyscrapers and densely packed landmarks. The solution? A boat ride. A breezy sail in New York Harbor can feature everything from an elegant dinner to a live jazz band to tacos and tequila. Read on to discover the top-rated New York City dinner cruise options as determined by travel expert opinion and recent reviews.

City Cruises New York Bateaux Premier Dinner Cruise

Price: From $144 Duration: 3 hours Standout perk: This all-glass boat delivers panoramic skyline views.

Climbing aboard the Bateaux feels like stepping into a greenhouse, with its glass-enclosed structure and water views in every direction. There are no bad seats on this boat, but as an upgrade you can reserve a window table for the best views of the Hudson River, the East River and the New York Harbor. This cruise is a match for anyone seeking elegance: The tables are covered in crisp white cloths, wine and cocktails are served in sparkling glasses, and a three-course a la carte dinner is served at a relaxed pace (no buffet here).

The Bateaux cruise is an experience to get dressed up for, where the dress code is semi-formal and dinner is accompanied by live music. The sunset can provide the perfect backdrop for pictures, and don't forget to snap a shot of the Statue of Liberty . Children younger than 6 are not permitted on this cruise, so expect a polished, for-adults atmosphere complete with creative cocktails and dancing under the stars. The Bateaux has rightfully earned a reputation for its fresh food; this three-course, plated menu includes several tempting a la carte options from a ravioli starter with crispy pancetta to osso bucco with cauliflower polenta.

City Cruises New York Signature Dinner Cruise

Price: From $109 Duration: 2.5 hours Standout perk: A live DJ gives this dinner cruise an extra dose of atmosphere.

Looking for a casual night of dining and dancing with the addition of a skyline backdrop? This dinner cruise offers just that. Set sail from Chelsea Piers in a climate-controlled boat along the Hudson and East rivers, admiring New York City landmarks like the Empire State Building . For dinner, indulge in a chef-prepared buffet with a wide range of options from Greek salad to oven-roasted salmon with miso to Caribbean jerk braised pork. If you're bringing a sweet tooth on board, be sure to check out the ample dessert station.

After snapping some pictures on the open-air deck, return to the cabin for cocktails from the cash bar, interactive games and upbeat music from the onboard DJ.

Those traveling with young kids will be pleased to know that infants younger than 3 cruise free – so feel free to bring your little ones along to enjoy the experience with you.

La Barca Cantina

La Barca Cantina dinner cruise with lights on boat at night.

Price: Varies Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.

One criticism of New York dinner cruises is that they don't offer good value for money, but the "taco boat" challenges that critique with ceviche, tacos, churros, cocktails and skyline views for an affordable price. Climb aboard a yacht at Pier 81 to experience a youthful, modern interpretation of a dinner cruise – think: low lighting, couches for lounging and three bars, complete with Latin pop, salsa and dance music playing in the background. Raise a glass while the yacht sails south on the Hudson River to check out world-famous Manhattan skyline views.

La Barca Cantina also offers a bottomless brunch cruise with a DJ, as well as special events.

Travelers Guide to New York City

Airports & entry, planning your nyc trip.

  • Traveling in the Time of COVID

Restaurants & Eating Out

Nightlife & entertainment, getting around, accommodations, attractions, what not to do in nyc, get the most out of your trip to nyc.

Whether you only have a day to visit in New York City or you are in town for a whole week, it is important that you know how to get around, where to go and also what not to do in the City. Use this handy travel guide to get the most out of your NYC experience.

If you are flying into New York City, it can get a little confusing as there are 3 airports that service the city. Both John F. Kennedy airport (JFK) and LaGuardia (LGA) are located in Queens.

This puts you right in the heart of NYC when you arrive. However, JFK primarily receives and sends international flights, unless you are flying through Continental Airlines. If you are flying in from another location within the US, you will most likely fly into LGA.

The Newark International Airport (EWR) is a more modern airport and with less crowds, it can be an easier and less stressful way to reach New York City. Newark isn’t very far from NYC. The benefits of flying into EWR may outweigh being a little farther away when you arrive.

A vacation in New York City requires some forethought and planning. First, you need to know how and when you will get there. However, additional planning for the time you are there can make the trip a lot less stressful.

Many restaurants in the city are very small, and very busy. You don’t want to be stuck waiting in line for several hours just to eat dinner. Make your dinner reservations as far in advance as you can.

You may also want to purchase a CityPass or an Explorer Pass. Instead of paying admission to each of the attractions you plan to visit, you can purchase one of these tourist passes that allow you entry into a set amount of attractions out of the 35 that accept the passes.

It not only saves money that can be spent on other parts of your trip, but it makes getting into these attractions a lot easier.

Traveling in the time of Covid

Like many other destinations worldwide, tours and visitor attractions in NYC have adopted special procedures.

Wearing a mask in mandatory in many locations. You will be expected to supply your own mask and wear it when you enter public buildings.

Keep your distance from other visitors who are not in your family group or bubble. You will be expected to keep your distance inside minibuses and other vehicles and when seated in restaurants.

At the time of writing, NYC welcomes visitors but requires pre-travel testing for Covid-19. You can obtain the most up-to-date information directly from the NYC COVID-19 Citywide Information Portal .

New York City has some of the finest dining you can experience in the US. However, dining in these restaurants can be pretty pricy. Plan on enjoying a couple of meals at a luxury restaurant, such as Gabriel Kreuther where you can enjoy French cuisine, or even the Empire Steakhouse. Here, you can enjoy a great steak as well as great drinks.

Cheaper restaurants or even casual dining will help you save some cash. Enjoy authentic NYC pizza at Famous Amadeus Pizzeria, for example. However, if you are on the move and need to grab something quick, there are always street vendors. You may even be surprised at how good the food is. To get the best taste of NYC, we would recommend taking a guided NYC food tour .

The New York City nightlife keeps both locals and tourists busy well into the night. If beer is your thing, you want to check out the Blind Tiger. Specializing in craft beers with 30 taps available, you’re sure to find a beer you love.

The Angel’s Share may not have a glamorous outdoor appearance, but inside, you will find classy and flashy drinks. As a Japanese cocktail bar in East Village, it has a unique feel. Want to visit someplace famous? The 7B has a grunge feel, also located in East Village, and has been featured in several movies, including the Godfather.

However, if you haven’t planned your NYC nightlife before arriving, you won’t have a problem finding a fun, unique place to enjoy a few drinks or even dancing. Famous for fun, the New York City nightlife has a lot to offer.

The subways in New York City may even be an attraction. There’s nothing quite like speeding through underground tunnels on a train. However, the subways are a very easy, quick, and cheap way to travel throughout the city. The local busses also make getting around easy.

You will have to pre-pay for your rides on both the subway system and the bus routes through the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or MTA. You can get single-ride passes or even an unlimited ride pass that lasts for the length of your trip.

You will definitely want to keep your subway and bus route map handy so you can figure out your travel ahead of time. Subways have stops every 8 to 10 blocks, approximately but if you take an express ride, the stops are farther apart. If you plan on visiting Staten Island, you will need to take the free ferry to the island.

If you are looking to stay in the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, you want to find a hotel in midtown. The right hotel will give you beautiful views of Time Square and more. However, these hotels are usually a bit more expensive just because of the location.

If you are looking for a luxury stay, the Mandarin Oriental or the famous Park Hyatt are close to attractions. If you want to save some cash and stay in a more affordable hotel, the Skyline Hotel New York or the Travel Inn, located in midtown, work just as well.

If you are traveling to New York City with your family, or even a group, you may want to look into a vacation rental. Several companies can help you find a residence within the city that is being rented out by the owners. They won’t be there, as you are renting the space. You typically have a lot more room, and conveniences such as a kitchen, when you find a vacation rental. It helps that it can save you money as well.

If you are going to enjoy a New York dinner cruise, you most likely want to visit in Summer or Fall. The average temps in NYC during the winter hover just above freezing and aren’t ideal for visiting most attractions in the City. The best time to visit would be from June to September.

You should look up the projected forecast just before you leave so you know what weather is expected. Be sure to pack clothes accordingly, but you may want to throw in a couple of outfits meant for different weather, just to be safe.

The Big Apple is never short on attractions to keep tourists busy from sun up to sun down. The Empire State Building is one of the most popular attractions as you are able to see the New York skyline from the observation deck. The Statue of Liberty is not to be missed. If you find yourself in Central Park, there are plenty of food vendors and even free activities to enjoy. If you want to take in a show, be sure to hit Broadway, and if music is your thing, there’s always the Radio City Music Hall.

Past tourists to New York City have learned from early mistakes and many locals can tell you how to plan for a trip. Most advise that you shouldn’t get out of the car or off the plane without a plan for your trip. Winging it in the big city means you may miss out on seasonal events or even attractions you want to visit but they are closed or busy.

Stopping by attractions when they are the busiest will also have you wasting a lot of time standing in line. Visiting during off-peak hours will allow you to enjoy those attractions with less crowds, also saving time for other tourist attractions.

You shouldn’t plan to visit only those museums that are the most popular. Others, such as the Frick or the Neue Gallery, can be just as exciting and also feature smaller crowds.

When walking on the sidewalks, be sure to walk with traffic and set aside if you need to slow down or stop. You shouldn’t walk more than 2 people wide and keep to the side of the sidewalk that is moving in the direction you are headed. When stepping off a curb to hail a cab, place yourself past any parked cars and wave and those cabs who have their cab light on, signaling it is available.

A lot of tourists stick close to the hotel and avoid many areas that are busy or large. However, you shouldn’t be afraid of getting lost. The streets are mostly laid out in a grid and it is usually very easy to tell which direction you are going or need to go.

Knowing that New York City is one of the biggest tourist areas around the country, locals are usually very willing to tell you where the closest subway entrance is, if you are headed in the right direction, or even how to get back to your hotel if you’ve lost your way. There’s nothing like a visit to the Big Apple, and while you are in town, be sure to take in the best New York dinner cruise.

Being encircled by not one but two rivers, New York is a great destination for dinner cruises. Regardless of whether you have a reason to celebrate or not, a dinner cruise in NYC will guarantee an unforgettable evening, because it combines breathtaking views of the city at dawn and delicious food with a relaxing atmosphere accompanied with music.

Steffen Kneist Loving New York

Which dinner cruise in New York is the best?

As you can see, we love the combination of boat tour, sightseeing and food. Therefore, we have tried many dinner cruises over the years. Some, unfortunately, were disappointing and way too expensive for what you got (so these are not represented in my best list).

We can personally recommend two dinner cruises: the Bateaux Dinner Cruise and the Dinner Cruise with the SPIRIT . We always had a great time on both!

#2 What Is The Best Boat Tour With Live Music in NYC?

If you like jazz as much as I do, these boat tours are really recommended – I’ve done all of them!

  • Bateaux Dinner Cruise Tickets (year round)
  • Live Jazz City Lights Sail (May to October only)
  • Evening Jazz Cruise on the Yacht Manhattan (year round)
  • Sunset, Wine, and Jazz Sail (May to October only)

#3 What Is The Most Romantic Dinner Cruise in New York?

What can be more romantic than enjoying the sunset on the water in a classy ambience? On the Bateaux Dinner Cruise, you’ll be seated at beautifully decorated tables in a all-glass dining vessel . On the Classic Harbor Line cruise, you are abord the America 2.0, listening to jazz from an onboard band, and enjoying the warm summer breeze – both cruises are awesome!

#4 What Special Cruises Are Available in NYC?

There are special cruises in New York for events like Valentine’s Day , 4th of July , Christmas Cruises and New Year’s Eve .

#5 What Are Alternatives to Traditional Dinner Cruises in NYC?

These boat tours are really something special and worth their money.

However, if you also want to visit attractions in New York City, you should take a look at the New York Discount Passes . Because some sailing and boating tours of them are included in the price.

  • For example, the Alive After-Five Cruise is included with the  New York Sightseeing DAY Pass  and the Sightseeing FLEX Pass .
  • The sailing tour with the Clipper City is included with the Explorer Pass , New York Pass , New York Sightseeing DAY Pass and Sightseeing FLEX Pass .

From one of our absolute favorite boat tours in New York there is also a Jazz Cruise. The jazz cruise starts at the Chelsea Piers and takes you along the Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty and the harbor of New York. My tip: On board you can order various small dishes to eat.

We had an amazing time onboard the luxurious 1920s inspired motor yacht. Combine sightseeing with a romantic evening and step onboard the 1920s inspired boat at Pier 62 (Chelsea Piers – W. 22nd and Hudson River). During the 90-minutes long tour, you’ll get to see iconic NYC sights along the water and most importantly breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Included in the price is a drink and guaranteed a lot of fun.

NOTE: This is one of the best boat tours in NYC – even if it doesn’t include dinner!

La Barca All-Inclusive Mexican Dinner Cruise

12 La Barca All-Inclusive Mexican Dinner Cruise

La Barca is New York’s only Mexican restaurant on board a ship. On this dinner cruise, you’ll cruise the Hudson River to the southern tip of Manhattan while eating delicious tacos and churros. Grab a margarita and then head to the outdoor deck – from here you can enjoy the stunning evening skyline of New York.

Which dinner cruise in NYC is the cheapest?

One thing in advance: the dinner cruises are not cheap. However, considering that you get dinner, a 3 hour sightseeing cruise, and a very special experience, it justifies the price.

The cheapest dinner cruises start at around $160. An alternative to this are brunch cruises or lunch cruises . These take place on the same ships and the itineraries are a bit shorter – here, the cheapest tickets start at $80.

Where do the dinner cruises depart from in New York?

The departure point depends on the operators: the two main ones depart from Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River at Pier 61/62. However, there are also Queens and Jersey City as departure locations.

Are there dinner cruises for special events?

Yes, especially the 4th of July, Thanksgiving dinner cruises, Christmas cruises and New Year’s Eve dinner cruises are very popular. If you are in New York at this time and plan to have dinner on a boat, you should book quickly. The tickets are very popular and the tours sell out quickly.

To help you quickly find the right dinner cruise for you, here are the best 4th of July Cruises , Thanksgiving Cruises , Christmas Cruises  and New Years Eve Cruises for you.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, there is a dress code: smart casual.

Best Dinner Cruise NYC

1) NYC Bateaux Dinner Cruise

  • Rating : 5 / 5 Stars
  • Departure Point : Chelsea Piers
  • Duration : 2.5 Hours
  • Booking : Check Rates & Availability

The most requested and popular dinner cruises in NYC is a bateaux boat experience.

A bateaux is a long flat river boat that offers the most luxurious of dining options overlooking NYC . The boat itself is all glass and has curved walls, meaning you will be able to enjoy the views from anywhere on the boat.

There is also live music onboard that will keep you entertained as you have your meal and take in the skyline out in front of you. Piano, bass, and guitar players are sure to keep the energy going from beginning to end.

Even though the full boat is covered in glass, you can still head outside on a larger deck area in the front of the boat. Taking in those unobstructed views as you ride through NY harbor will be tough to beat.

As for the food, this is going to be a quality 3 course meal experience. You will get to pick among several choices for each course with options for everyone. Pan roasted cod, oven roasted chicken, braised short ribs, and root vegetable fricassee are just some menu items to expect.

If you are looking for that romantic night on the Hudson and East River , the bateaux dinner cruise is the one to pick.

Given not everyone is coming in from NYC for a dinner cruise, this is the perfect option for those that rather hop on across the river in New Jersey.

Even before you get on the boat, the views of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River will be impressive. Once on the dinner cruise, NYC will be looming large out in front as you take in Hudson and East Rivers all along the way.

Similar to the previous dinner cruise, this one will also be a buffet with a live DJ to keep the energy going throughout the ride. Plenty of food options will be available with alcoholic beverages available for an extra cost.

The yacht can fit up to 6 people altogether, so if you have a larger group, this can be a great way to split up the costs and have a private cruising experience.

Now, when it comes to the food, this will be an additional cost to the yacht itself. There is a catering menu available that you can order from beforehand. By doing so, you will be able to have an outdoor dining meal docked right in front of the Statue of Liberty.

While the previous cruises all offer some sort of dinner experience, these next several options will all be about enjoying the experience with a drink.

First up is this NYC sunset yacht cruise aboard a small elegant boat. The boat ride takes guests throughout the harbor and the rivers over the course of 1.5 hours.

You can enjoy some time inside the cabin or on the outside deck to get those more unobstructed views over NYC.

Since this is a sunset cruise, get ready for those colors to pop up in the sky with some New York highlights all around.

While the cruise includes just one drink, you can purchase more in addition to some snacks.

7) NYC Schooner Sunset Cruise

Instead of taking in a sunset cruise on a more enclosed boat, why not check out the NYC Schooner sunset cruise .

This 1800’s style sailboat will have you floating through the waters around the city as the sun sets and the lights of the skyline brighten up.

It is going to be a much more outside focused type of cruise as you are on the deck of the boat. So, if you sign up just be sure to take a look at the weather. Bringing an additional layer cant hurt!

Whether you are looking to see the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center , or the Empire State Building, you are sure to get a view at one point or another.

Similarly, to other drink cruises, just one is included in the price with more available for purchase.

8) NYC Evening Jazz Cruise

If you are looking for some jazzy vibes while cruising around the waters of New York City, then this 90 minute evening jazz cruise is a top choice.

Instead of a more standard cruise ride, this one will have a live jazz band on board that is sure to keep the party going all throughout the trip.

It is an intimate atmosphere on board, so you are sure to be in the center of the action as the band keeps the mood up.

If you want to head outside that is an option too. There is plenty of outdoor space to soak in the NYC skyline views from.

One drink is included in the price with snacks & more available for purchase.

9) City Lights Yacht Cruise

For a later evening cruise along the NYC waterfront, this City Lights Yacht Cruise is one of the top options out there.

These later departures guarantee a longer time out on the water with the skyline lit up against the night sky. Getting to see New York at night is going to be a whole different type of experience to take in compared to the day.

Whether it the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge , or any of the iconic NYC skyscrapers, a nighttime view of these sites is tough to beat.

Along the way, you will get to enjoy some light jazz music from inside or outside of the boat as you sip on a drink and take it all in.

10) NYC Holiday Yacht Cruise

If you happen to be visiting NYC during the holiday time, then you may as well opt for this holiday yacht cruise out on the water.

The boat will be full of holiday decorations as you celebrate one of the best times of year in NYC.

The lights and décor won’t be the only thing in the holiday spirit. Included in the price are a variety of holiday themed cookies and hot cocoa. There will also be some entertainment onboard to guarantee a festive spirit throughout the cruise.

One drink is included in the price of the cruise, with more available to purchase.

11) Best of NYC Cruise

  • Rating : 4.5 / 5 Stars
  • Departure Point : Pier 83

While all of above are geared towards dinner cruises and more intimate drink cruises, I also wanted to mention a couple of the more standard cruise options out there.

Circle Line is one of the top tour operators when it comes to sightseeing around NYC.

This “ Best of NYC ” cruise takes people all around the island of Manhattan while seeing all five boroughs and over 100 sites along the way.

Throughout the cruise you will be able to hear from an expert guide as you make your way all throughout NYC.

This is without a doubt a top tier cruise to sign up for if you are just looking for a more sightseeing type of experience.

Note : drinks & food are available for purchase on board

12) Harbor Lights Cruise

While the above Circle Line cruise is more so a daytime cruise, the Harbor Lights option gives you the ability to see the city at night.

This option wont be as extensive as the Best of NYC, but it does give you the opportunity to get 2 fun filled hours in as you enjoy views of the skyline and the harbor.

Views of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building , and plenty more will be out in front of you during the cruise.

Enjoy a mixture of indoor and outdoor seating with the option to to purchase some drinks and snacks along the way.

The 5 Best NYC Dinner Cruises for Food & Views

W hen you're strolling the streets of Manhattan, it can be difficult to grasp the magnitude of the city, with its skyscrapers and densely packed landmarks.

Price: From $144

Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: This all-glass boat delivers panoramic skyline views.

Price: From $109

Duration: 2.5 hours

Standout perk: A live DJ gives this dinner cruise an extra dose of atmosphere.

Price: Varies

Duration: 2 hours

Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.

Classic Harbor Line NYC Evening Jazz Cruise

Price: From $108

Duration: 1.5 hours

Standout perk: A jazz trio typically featuring a sax, keyboard and drums plays live on board.

Listen to jazz standards aboard a 1920s-style yacht with this fun sightseeing cruise departing from Pier 62 in Chelsea Piers. Choose between kicking back in the climate-controlled cabin or on the open-air deck throughout this evening cruise, which includes views of Manhattan landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Live music is played outside on the deck or inside the salon, depending on the season (and the boat, Manhattan or Manhattan II).

While this cruise doesn't offer dinner, one complimentary alcoholic beverage is included, and a cash bar offers additional drinks and snacks. Listen to music by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and more as you sail past the twinkling Manhattan skyline. Those traveling in a group should keep in mind: Tickets are slightly discounted for groups of 4 to 16.

Circle Line New York City Harbor Lights Cruise

Price: From $54

Standout perk: This no-fuss, excellent-value cruise option has drinks and snacks available for purchase on board.

When you're craving panoramic views rather than a three-course meal, choose the Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise departing from Pier 83. This sightseeing sailing delivers an up-close experience of the Manhattan skyline lights coming to life, while cruising past landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building . A live guide provides narration and historical context for what you're seeing. As the sun sets behind New Jersey, watch the glow of the sinking sun reflect in the windows of skyscrapers.

Food from the onboard cafe – like salads, sandwiches and snacks – as well as beer, wine and cocktails at the bar are available for purchase. This is an ideal situation for groups with varying levels of hunger and thirst. Sit alfresco in the breeze or indoors in the climate-controlled cabin – it's up to you.

Non-English-speaking guests can download the Circle Line app for narration available in several languages; just be sure to bring your own headset.

Dennis quaid ‘really admires’ trump’s visits to nyc neighborhoods after historic bronx rally.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Dennis Quaid, star of the upcoming biopic “Reagan,” expressed his respect for Donald Trump following the former president’s tours of minority communities in New York City.

Quaid made an appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime” following Trump’s landmark rally in the South Bronx on Thursday, where thousands turned out to support the 2024 presidential candidate.

“I really admire Trump for going into the neighborhoods,” Quaid told Watters. “You know, people relate to that. They really do. If anything, all these events that been conspiring against him have actually made him more human to people.”

Quaid added: “Donald Trump has been talking about cleaning house, which, you know, kind of making a clean sweep to start over. That doesn’t mean being a dictator. That just means that we started doing what the American people have asked us to do.”

In the summer of 1980, Ronald Reagan visited the South Bronx, where he criticized Jimmy Carter for neglecting urban revitalization efforts, likening the area to post-World War II London. This visit preceded Reagan’s narrow victory in New York by nearly 3 percentage points in the 1980 general election.

Reagan then carried New York by a margin of 8 points in his 49-state landslide win in 1984. Since Reagan’s victories, no Republican president has won this traditionally Democratic stronghold during a general election.

Dennis Quaid on Jesse Watters' show on Fox News

The Hollywood veteran described Reagan’s visit to the South Bronx as “very significant,” recalling the moment, having “lived through” that era.

“It took guts to go there,” Quaid remarked. “He could have wound up with egg on his face.”

Quaid disclosed Reagan was the first president that he ever voted for, portraying him as a “man of the people” and a “great communicator.”

People attending a campaign rally for former US president Donald Trump in Cortona Park, Bronx, New York, holding signs; Christine Wenzel spotted among the crowd.

In the upcoming 2024 biopic “Reagan,” Dennis Quaid will play the 40th president of the United States.

“It’s a really good movie that will remind us of how America used to be and what America can be,” Quaid said. “You know, it’s… kind of a presentation of Reagan. He was a great human being, and I’m proud of the movie.”

When asked by Watters if he sees any parallels between 1980 and the present day, Quaid responded by stating that he still believes in the slogan, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

“Reagan” is set to release in theaters on August 30.

Subscriber only, travel | new cruise line dining experiences make you forget you’re on a cruise.

Royal Caribbean’s chief product innovation officer Jay Schneider sitting on a test version of the Royal Railway - Utopia Station dining venue at the company's Miami headquarters on Thursday, May 23, 2024. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

A recent trend, though, has seen cruise lines investing in designs meant to transport the diner away from the vessel.

One of the newest ventures is sticking them on a train. Royal Railway – Utopia Station is a featured restaurant coming on board Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas when it debuts this summer in Port Canaveral.

Cruisers will climb aboard a simulated train to experience what traveling on a dining car is like, complete with passing different countryside scenes projected on digital screens.

The first sailings will be limited to an adventure themed to the America’s Wild West for a 90-minute trip that mimics the sights, sounds and feel of a moving train car. Other themes in the works are based on the Silk Route trains that traveled through Asia and 30-minute offerings.

Diners start with pre-dinner drinks on a station platform, and when the train whistle sounds, board the dining car where a cast of performers play out an interactive storyline involving outlaws attempting a train robbery. Royal Caribbean put on a sample version of the experience at its Miami headquarters on Thursday.

Media tried out a test version of dining venue Royal Railway - Utopia Station at Royal Caribbean's Miami headquarters on Thursday, May 24, 2024. The interactive dinner experience is coming to Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas when it debuts at Port Canaveral in summer 2024. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The menu leans into ingredients from New Mexico and California. Hard drinks are thematic to the Old West (think pisco sour) as is the soft drink of sarsaparilla served in a flask. Entrees include river trout, braised short ribs and quail-esque roasted poussin. Appetizers include corn chowder, an empanada trio and “Fart & Dart Baked Beans.”

A little juvenile humor does make its way into the performance, as do some dad jokes and over-the-kids-heads jokes.

“It’s like a caricature. It’s good old-fashioned fun,” said Royal Caribbean President Michael Bayley, but he said the performances and approach may depend on when cruisers are seated.

“In the afternoon into the early evening, it will be more kid-immersive. As you move later on into the evening, it will be more sophisticated,” he said.

The main draw to the experience are the continuous digital screen projections that include frontier towns and desert and mountain landscapes that could be right out of an Albert Bierstadt painting.

The final product resolution will be in 4K, but even the test run’s digital renderings were impressive, minus the few hiccups like a horse floating over the cliff.

Royal Caribbean’s chief product innovation officer Jay Schneider said relying on computer-generated video proved to be the better choice over real landscape videos,  although teams did visit actual railways in the West for inspiration.

“Now we can flip a switch and make this winter and make this nighttime,” he said. “That definitely kind of unlocked a lot of possibilities.”

A trio featuring a singer, piano and stand-up bass perform during the three-hour dinner in the 1920s New York-themed Empire Supper Club aboard Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, seen here on Jan. 22, 2024 ahead of the ship's debut from PortMiami. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

There’s also the $200, three-hour-plus dining experience at the 38-seat venue Empire Supper Club that debuted on the world’s largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas that began sailing from Miami in January.

It transports diners to the roaring ’20s of New York City amid an eight-course meal with each course paired with a unique cocktail.

Diners enjoy music from the American Standards Trio with a vocalist, piano and stand-up bass.

The details such as the rotary phones in the lobby and the uniformed waiters and hostess wearing a sultry dinner gown add to the ambience. The menu delves into some not-so-common options such as oysters Rockefeller and a leg and loin duo of rabbit. More traditional fare is offered, too, including steak, seabass and Caesar salad.

The cocktail pairing approach means no wine, and that’s OK for the venue, said Linken D’Souza, vice president of food and beverage for Royal Caribbean International.

“We went through many iterations of the cocktails to make sure that they’re well balanced. … They paired exceptionally well with the food,” he said. “So that’s not E for everyone. And that’s OK. It’s just a unique niche experience that we want people to really be adventurous.”

Royal isn’t the first to venture down the thematic dining road, which has in some ways been dabbled with over the years, including dinner theater in-the-round venues on some Norwegian Cruise Line ships such as the short-lived magic-themed Illusionarium on Norwegian Getaway and the celebration of 1980s teen films from John Hughes on Norwegian Escape.

And Disney Cruise Line’s rotational dining has always served up a variety of thematic overlays. Its newest ships, though, have taken it to the next level.

That includes the Worlds of Marvel dining venue on both its latest ship Disney Wish, and its upcoming Disney Treasure debuting this December, both sailing out of Port Canaveral. Disney Wish also debuted Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, a vast food hall that expanded on similar approaches to dining themed to “Tangled” and “Princess & the Frog” on older ships Disney Magic and Wonder.

Disney Treasure will have a dinner theater-in-the-round venue based on the Disney/Pixar film "Coco" called Plaza De Coco featuring the town of Santa Cecilia and the film's main character Miguel and his familia alongside a five-course modern take on traditional Mexican fare. (Courtesy/Disney Cruise Line)

For Disney Treasure, the line is shelving “Frozen” in favor of the Disney-Pixar film “Coco.” The new overlay will feature a five-course meal with a modern take on traditional Mexican fare.

It will feature live performers telling the story of Miguel and his familia being offered up with different-themed seatings per voyage, as it’s tied to a seven-night sailing. The first night takes diners to Mariachi Plaza with Miguel’s parents Enrique and Luisa as well as Abuelita Elena. The second night takes diners to the town square in Santa Cecilia through where Miguel and his ancestors including great-great grandparents Hector and Mama Imelda celebrate Día de los Muertos.

“The adventure takes you through [those] heartstrings, and pulls you back into family, right?” said Carlos Jimenez, a managing producer with Disney Cruise Line Entertainment. “Doesn’t matter if you’re coming from the Mexican culture or any other culture. Family’s at the center – la familia es todo . So family is everything and we want to make sure we’re telling that beautiful story.”

360: An Extraordinary Experience is available on two Princess Cruises ships, the Discovery Princess and Enchanted Princess. The multi-course meal takes diners on a sensory trip across the Mediterranean.

Princess Cruises also debuted a suite-level guest offering called “360: An Extraordinary Experience” on board Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess.

The line carved out a small rotunda venue with two half-circle long tables facing one another for 20 diners to serve up a seven-course meal that hits all the senses over an hour and a half.

Diners begin seated within a dark room surrounded by digital screen snapshots of Mediterranean destinations about the circular enclosed walls, What follows is a combination of storytelling of a culinary adventure from Greece to Italy to Spain and into France with an assist from actress Brooke Shields leading the way.

It’s a narrative device to get the real stories told, the source of the various culinary delights presented with white-glove service from course to course, whether it’s the Spanish divers who take the red varietal Grenache and age it underwater or the French lavender farmer who explains where the distinct honey flavor comes from.

Along the way, and intense and detailed projection about the room and onto the dinner service plates invites diners to interact with their meal settings before the actual food is presented, such as virtually smashing some Greek plateware or digging up their own Spanish truffle.

The scents of the food while dining could suffice, but an effusive olfactory accompaniment hits here and there such as the lemon aroma ahead of the tasty Italian dish pasta al limone while its recipe is projected upon the screen.

“What happens here in 360 is you can be anywhere in the world and we’re going to transport you into the Mediterranean,” said Princess Cruises President John Padgett during the experience’s debut event. “We have immersive video, storytelling, food and wine that intersects with the story.”

MSC cruise ships offer multiple dining options onboard, both included in the fare and extra.

When searching through cruise line reviews online, it won't take you long to come across negative comments about the dining experience on MSC Cruises. But is that reputation justified?

Because MSC Cruises offers some of the industry's lowest base fares, many guests are drawn to the line without a clear understanding of cruise ship dining or what to expect onboard.

Although the dining experience is similar to other mass-market cruise lines, there are some crucial differences. There’s less of a focus on breakfast, and a more Mediterranean approach to what’s on offer later in the day.

So, if you are taking or considering an MSC cruise in the coming years, here’s what to expect from the onboard dining experience.

Where MSC Cruises Excels

While this setup is similar to other cruise lines, MSC, as a European cruise line , emphasizes simple breakfasts and multi-course dinners with a focus on a Mediterranean diet.

That being said, MSC Cruises is making a big push into the North American market. Cruises departing Miami do have their dining concepts adjusted for the market, but these are more tweaks than wholesale changes.

What MSC does best is Mediterranean cuisine, including breads, pasta, cheeses, fish, and pizza.

Bread is served with most meals and is of a good quality.

On new ship MSC Euribia , all breads and pastas are made on board. Also produced on board is fresh mozzarella. More than 650 pounds of it is made—and eaten—every day, thanks in part to delicious fresh mozzarella balls being available from the buffet.

Those who prefer informal dining will delight at the excellent quality pizza produced on all MSC vessels. Available from the buffet throughout the day and late into the evening, and from other informal venues too, the pizza is fresh, hot, and delicious.

Excellent pizza is available for up to 20 hours per day on MSC cruise ships.

Cruzely.com rated it the “best pizza at sea” while The Points Guy ranked the offering 5/5. Room service pizza is popular and equally tasty, although this comes at an extra charge.

MSC Dining Concept Explained

As with how dining works on most major lines, MSC offers evening dining at fixed times in main dining rooms, or casual options such as a buffet restaurant, poolside grill, and, on some ships, a fast-food outlet, all included in the fare.

Specialty restaurants are available for an additional charge, with the number of venues dependent on the ship.

MSC offers three tiers of cruise experience, each with various amenities bundled into your fare. Each package—’Bella’, ‘Fantastica’, and ‘Aurea’—offers an increasing range of perks.

Guests on a ‘Fantastica’ package can order room service breakfast for free and choose their preferred dining time in advance. ‘Aurea’ guests are able to dine in the ‘anytime’ restaurant, offering more flexibility during the evenings.

Main Dining Rooms

Every guest is assigned a table in one of several main dining rooms for an evening meal, usually on either an early or late seating. The precise timings and concept differs depending on the ship and itinerary.

One of the main dining rooms on MSC Euribia.

Three-course menus change daily, with a slate of ‘always available’ classics such as pasta with tomato sauce, or grilled chicken breast. Risotto and seafood are popular, while there is always at least one vegetarian choice.

Presentation is on the simple side and service can be patchy, although things tend to improve over the course of a week as serving staff get to know guest preferences.

Mediterranean food is generally the best choice in the main dining rooms.

At least one dining room is usually open for breakfast, lunch, or sometimes ‘brunch’ on sea days. This offers a more relaxed alternative to the buffet.

Informal Dining

The primary informal restaurant on MSC ships is known as the ‘Marketplace Buffet’. Opening hours vary depending on the day but it usually opens from an early as 6:30am and serves late night snacks until the early hours.

On most ships, the pizzeria is located in the buffet restaurant and has longer opening hours. There is full bar service available with a button on the tables used to call a member of the bar team.

The buffet restaurant does get crowded during breakfast service as there are few other options available, but there is generally more space available in the evenings.

Salads are available from the Marketplace Buffet, including freshly-made mozzarella on MSC Euribia.

On all ships in the fleet, there are more informal opportunities to satisfy your hunger than you may realise.

On MSC’s World Europa and the upcoming World America , set to launch from Miami in 2025, a fast food joint including pizzeria is open most of the day and is ideally placed to grab a quick bite when rejoining the ship.

If you don’t eat much for breakfast, light pastries are available in the morning from the onboard cafe, while light bites are usually available throughout the afternoon from selected lounges.

Specialty Restaurants

All ships in the MSC fleet offer at least a few specialty restaurants, with the most available on the newest ships.

Kaito is a Japanese restaurant on MSC Euribia.

These vary in price and are usually themed after a specific cuisine, from a French grill to Japanese sushi and teppanyaki.

There’s a notable improvement in the quality of the food in all specialty restaurants, both in terms of choice and quality. Choosing to eat in one or two of these will make a big difference to your overall dining experience, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.

For example, the Mexican cantina, Hola!, offers authentic dishes with an a la carte option ideal for lunch, or a $20 all-you-can-eat option for an indulgent dinner.

Hola! Tacos and Cantina is a good value way to try specialty dining on MSC cruise ships.

Dining packages are also available that include set meals at a specific number of restaurants. Book in advance to save money, but book times at individual restaurants as soon as you board to avoid disappointment, especially if you’d like to dine there on sea days.

Room Service

Finally, don't ignore room service as an option, especially if you are on the ‘Fantastica’ or ‘Aurea’ packages. These guests are entitled to free breakfast delivery each day of the cruise, with the exception of disembarkation day.

While the menu is limited, there are enough options to avoid the busy buffet and enjoy a relaxed breakfast on your balcony at a time that suits you.

A simple room service breakfast on MSC Euribia.

As with the pizza available in the ship’s informal dining venues, the room service pizza is excellent and a good value option if you want to take it easy on a particular day.

Overall, dining on MSC Cruises is far from the most premium experience at sea, yet it’s also a lot better than many reviews may suggest.

If you adjust your expectations, embrace Mediterranean favorites, and be prepared to pay for at least one specialty experience, dining is likely to be a positive memory from your MSC cruise.
