Gundam factory yokohama guide — your last chance to visit.
- Japan , Yokohama
Standing at 18 metres tall at Yamashita Pier, the giant Gundam has got to be one of the most impressive attractions I’ve seen. Opened in 2020, the Gundam Factory Yokohama is an attraction themed after the popular Gundam franchise.
Initially set to close in March 2023, it has recently been extended to March 2024, which is a relief for fans who have yet to visit. This might be your last chance, so do make sure to include your Japan itinerary!
Getting to Gundam Factory Yokohama
The Gundam Factory Yokohama is a 10-minute walk from the nearest train station, Motomachi Chukagai , in Yokohama, which is about an hour away from Tokyo.
Walking through Yamashita Park along the Yokohama waterfront, you’ll be able to spot the large white container at the edge of Yamashita Pier from a distance and that’s where you’ll find the exhibition.
Entrance And Ticket Counter
If you did not book your tickets beforehand, you can purchase tickets at the entrance but it is not guaranteed you will be able to get them. You’ll likely only be able to purchase entrance tickets (¥1650, ≈SGD 16.50) as the tower dock tickets gets sold out online really quickly.
Tour Of The Place
Gundam-dock.
The main attraction, RX-78F00, sits on the dock — a large open space where visitors can marvel at the giant. There are also a few tables — great for a break between the performances.
You’ll find the dock tower on the Gundam’s left and is where you’ll be able to view the giant up close on Deck 5 and 6. Do note that entrance to the dock tower will require a separate ticket .
Academy (Gundam-Lab)
The academy is where you’ll be able to learn about the exhibition and the team behind it. There were also lots of interactive bits where you can fix up a miniature Gundam and also learn how the joints of the giant Gundam moves.
Shopping (The Gundam Base)
As with every attraction, there’s a souvenir shop here. Can’t leave without a souvenir amirite?
Many items sold here are limited edition, such as the model kits of the Gundam dock. As of the time we visited, many items are sold out, there seems to be no plans for restock.
There is also a shop right outside, so if you did not manage to get tickets, you can still do some shopping. However, some items that are exclusively for purchase only in the shop inside the attraction.
Food and beverages are readily available at the Gundam Cafe and also at food trucks on the dock. However, the food options are pretty limited and the menus of the food trucks are in Japanese only.
Performance
The giant Gundam “awakes” roughly every 20 minutes and its performance schedule depends on the day you visit (weekdays, weekends or holidays). It would take you about 2 hours if you want to watch all 4 performances.
Check the website for detailed performance schedules for both weekdays and weekends.
The “Awakening” performance was pretty impressive, though slow, you’ll get to see several movements such as kneeling and walking. Audio and mist added to the grandness and overall vibe of the performance.
Ticketing (Steps To Buying Online)
Entrance tickets cost ¥1650 (≈SGD 16.50) and an additional ¥3300 (≈SGD 33) for the dock tower. As mentioned previously, note that you will have to buy both tickets if you want to visit the dock tower.
1. Select the ticket you want to purchase
2. Select date
3. Select quantity and add it to cart. You will see your cart at the bottom of the window:
You can click on the cart icon to check your selection.
After purchasing the tickets successfully, you will receive the email with QR codes and the tickets will be reflected in your account under “Tickets owned”. Just show them on your mobile phone at the entrance; the QR code in the email is sufficient to enter the attraction.
For more detailed instructions please refer to the video from Gundam Factory Yokohama’s official ticketing guide (For PC / Mobile ).
Visit the official website for the latest ticketing news. If you are really interested in going up the dock tower, please do not wait to buy the ticket(s) right before entering as it will most probably sold out.
You may have noticed that there’s nothing written about going up the dock tower as we decided to not go for it as it did not seem worth the price. We also felt that viewing the performance from the dock probably looks much cooler as you will be able to see the entire Gundam. Reentry is not allowed and the dock tower is a timed entry ticket so be very sure when leaving that you’ve gotten enough pictures and videos of the exhibition!
Update: Gundam Factory Yokohama is closed as of 1 April 2024. However, the life-sized Gundam will be reconfigured and making an appearance in Osaka, from 13 April – 13 October 2025 for Expo 2025 .

GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA
NAVITIME TRAVEL EDITOR
As the legend goes, the Japanese Mobile Suit Gundam stood as the last line of defence for the human race in an epic battle between earth and enemies from space. It was widely believed that Gundam was lost forever more after surviving a battle between the Earth’s people and an army of spacenoids. Years later though, a number of parts from the Gundam suit were found in the ocean surrounding the Yamashita Pier in Yokohama. In response to the discovery, engineers from across Japan were brought in to analyse and reconstruct the enormous mechanical suit, which today stands 18 metres tall at GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA, ready for mobilisation should the earth come under attack once again. Thankfully, there are no intergalactic threats on the horizon, meaning visitors can now enjoy Gundam suit up close and personal as part of a fun-filled day out at GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA, a limited time event running until March 31st, 2023.
A Real-Life Robot
Located in GUNDAM-DOCK and impossible to miss as it stands watch beside the bay, the Gundam is an incredibly detailed recreation of the pilot-operated suit seen throughout the widely popular manga and anime series.

But not only impressive in its appearance, the Gundam is also fully motorised, allowing it to move its entire body within the dock in an incredible display known as the “startup experiment”. This event, accompanied by a thematic combination of music, smoke and sound effects, would have you certain you’d stepped right into a scene from the show as the Gundam is preparing for battle. While visible from the ground, visitors can also enjoy the display from the dedicated viewing spaces within the adjacent GUNDAM-DOCK TOWER. Here the Gundam can be viewed up close and personal all the way to its enormous head in a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
Learning at the Academy
Located within GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA complex is the futuristic GUNDAM-LAB, home to a fascinating and educational series of attractions known as ACADEMY. Here, visitors are greeted by a plethora of exhibitions that look as though they were taken straight out of the Gundam universe. Designed to be enjoyed by Gundam fans and those new to the franchise alike, here you can get up to speed on the history of Mobile Suit Gundam, its characters and how the robots are designed to operate through a series of physical and augmented reality displays.

Gundam Factory Yokohama with a light-weight itinerary
Yokohama is a really cool and new city next to Tokyo. Many young people nowadays prefer to go Yokohama for hangout with friends. Here is a light-weight itinerary for half-day tour. Let’s go see Gundam Factory Yokohama.
Getting to Yokohama
Lunch at sakuragicho, yokohama city loop bus, red brick warehouse for strawberry, walk to gundam factory yokohama, gundam factory yokohama, taking on air cabin and go home, other articles about japan.
There is a direct rail way to go Yokohama from Tokyo station and it is very easy to go. Just take a ticket to Yokohama and get on rail line Keihin-Tohoku Line 京浜東北線 and then you can arrive there to see ocean by just 40 minutes. Please be aware that our destination is Sakuragicho station (桜木町駅) instead of Yokohama station (横浜駅) because our target this time is to Minato Mirai area nearby coast !!
As you can see, the Sakuragicho station is built with a huge plaza when stepping out the station. There are a lot of malls and restaurants around the station. I would recommend you to have a lunch here first and you can get good bargain. When going closer to the sight seeing spots, the price is getting higher to restaurants.
Please forgive me that I forgot to take photo of my lunch at a Japanese restaurant 京都勝牛 (Kyoto Katsugyu) and I just took its menu photo ( Orz…… ). The lunch set (Teishoku 定食) called 牛ビレカツ is pretty nice. Otherwise, you have an alternative in the same building at Burger King. The Whopper burger is now on sale and cost only 250 yen. Unn, very yummy.
Yokohama has a very friendly city plan for pedestrians to walk around. However, it is a little far from the station to the coast, so I would recommend you to try take a City Loop Bus. The announcement would take us to sight seeing spots and introduce us all about that. Besides, the bus is very cute and comfortable. It worth.
The warehouse is called 横浜赤レンガ倉庫 in Japanese and built in 1911 . From 2007, one building was regarded as a cultural facility and the other one was regarded as a shopping mall with shops and restaurants. There are many local events hosted at the Warehouse plaza almost every weekend.
The date I went to the warehouse was coming with a Strawberry event. It should be a lot of Strawberry events around Japan in Winter because people here love strawberry a lot and they also have different categories of strawberry. Having fun with kids, seeing the ocean at bay, and eating many strawberry cakes, parfait, cookies are so nice and peaceful stay at a weekend.
If you have time to take a look at the maps, as you can see, the Gundam Factory is very close to the Red Brick Warehouse. During the walk, all places you walk through is a huge park, called Yamashita Park. Therefore, it is very comfortable to walking around this area.
Here is also a historical park built in 1923 after a devastate earthquake in Japan. One of the feature to the park is the ship called Hikawamaru (氷川丸). It symbolizes the open of Yokohama port 100 years ago after old Japan government had closed its border around 400 years.
The best time to go see the GUNDAM is around during sunset in my opinion. The GUNDAM performances are hosting every 20 ~ 30min with slightly different story. However, the stories before sunset and after sunset, and the moves of GUNDAM are huge different. Besides, at night, the story is coming with illumination shows belong to music as well.
It might be the last change to see the GUNDAM performance in Yokohama by announcement from official website . Yes, it is sad that the performance will be ended from April 2024 in final.
The Yohokama Air Cabin is a newest facility in this city and the terminals are at Red Brick Warehouse and Sakuragicho station. So this time, just take the loop bus back to the warehouse from Gundam Factory and take on the cabin back to the statioin.
It does be very beautiful at daytime when taking the Air Cabin to see the city. However, night view is much beautiful and romantic in my preference. Don’t miss this wonderful moment when going there with your partners.

Final call: Gundam Factory Yokohama is closing at the end of March 2024
This is your last chance to see the giant moving Gundam in Yokohama – final batch of tickets go on sale March 1
Time is ticking for those wishing to see the magnificent 18-metre-tall Gundam at Gundam Factory Yokohama . This monumental engineering marvel with flashing LED lights, moving limbs and the ability to step out from its Gundam Dock, has captivated mecha fans since its unveiling in December 2020. A mindblowing feat of design and mechanical science, the mega robot began development in 2014 and took several years to perfect.
While this Gundam masterpiece has enjoyed an extended stay, delighting fans who were unable to visit due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, all good things must come to an end. Despite a couple of extensions in the past, as of February 2024, there have been no announcements of further prolonging its stay. This means that the Gundam Factory Yokohama is set to close for good on March 31 2024.
Don't miss your last opportunity to witness this giant Gundam in person and plan your visit now! Tickets for visit between March 1 and March 15 are available now for ¥1,650 per adult and ¥1,100 per child. For those planning to visit between March 16 and March 31, tickets will become available online from 10am JST on March 1. Note that access to the Gundam Dock Tower will require a separate ticket, priced at ¥3,300 per person.
As for the Gundam’s fate after March 31, rumours are circulating that the moving mecha may be dismantled and transported to Osaka to be showcased at the Gundam Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka next year. This has yet to be confirmed by organisers, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for an update soon.
For more information, visit the Gundam Factory Yokohama website .

Goodbye gundam: iconic giant moving robot takes final bow in japan.
The RX-78F00 Gundam exhibit at Yamashita Pier in Yokohama closed March 31, 2024. (Juan King/Stars and Stripes)
A 60-foot-tall moving robot inspired by a popular Japanese anime series said its last goodbyes Sunday after a four-year, twice-extended display.
The RX-78F00 Gundam — or General Purpose Utility Non-Discontinuity Augmentation Maneuvering Weapon System — stood on Yamashita Pier with the Yokohama skyline as its backdrop.
It was erected in December 2020 to mark the 40th anniversary of “Mobile Suit Gundam,” which premiered in 1979. Most Gundams are large, bipedal, humanoid vehicles controlled from a cockpit by a human pilot. The one in Yokohama could move its head and arms and take steps backwards and forwards and kneel. More than 1.5 million people visited the manned robot in its Gundam Dock Tower.

The exhibit was scheduled to close in 2022 and again last year but the Gundam Factory, which operates the exhibit, had extended the robot’s appearance through the end of March.
Tickets for the final weeks went fast, but I was among the lucky few. Approaching the Gundam Factory from Motomachi-Chukagai Station, the towering robot was already visible from afar.
Hundreds of people were already present, but there was a clear view for photos of the Gundam once I was inside the Gundam Factory’s gate.
The 25-ton robot stood inside an intricately built dock tower. With its back attached to the dock, the massive structure was raised, lowered, moved forward and backwards using the Gundam-Carrier, an assembly of large gears and pulleys.

From standby mode in a standing position, the Gundam undertook a series of scheduled movements.
The free movement of its hands, arms, legs and feet allowed it to simulate walking forward. Light-emitting diodes, including red and green ones in its eyes, made for a brilliant night show. Altogether, the performance was called the Artificial Intelligence Awakening.
Before leaving, I looked back at the giant Gundam one last time. Sentimental music playing over the public address system lent an aura of sadness to one of its final performances.
Anyone who may have missed the final RX-78F00 exhibit can find an even taller Gundam display for free at Odaiba, a waterfront area of Tokyo. The Gundam statue at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, depicts a newer version of robot that stands 64 feet.
