Tips for Gay and Lesbian Travelers in Norway

As one of the most sophisticated countries on the planet, it naturally follows that Norway is also one of the most gay-friendly. Most Norwegians are tolerant of the lifestyles of others, including their sexual preference. Obviously, an urban center such as Oslo will accommodate a more openly gay life than in rural areas.

In Norway, gays and lesbians have the same legal status as heterosexuals, with the exception of adoption rights. Legislation passed in 1981 protects gays and lesbians from discrimination. In 1993, a law was passed recognizing the "partnerships" of homosexual couples -- in essence, a recognition of same-sex marriages. The age of consent for both men and women in Norway is 16 years of age.

The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association ( IGLTA; tel. 954/630-1637; www.iglta.org) is the trade association for the gay and lesbian travel industry, and offers an online directory of gay- and lesbian-friendly travel businesses and tour operators.

Many agencies offer tours and travel itineraries specifically for gay and lesbian travelers. Above and Beyond Tours (tel. 800/397-2681; www.abovebeyondtours.com) are gay Australia tour specialists. San Francisco-based Now, Voyager (tel. 800/255-6951; www.nowvoyager.com) offers worldwide trips and cruises. And Olivia (tel. 800/631-6277; www.olivia.com) offers lesbian cruises and resort vacations.

Gay.com Travel (tel. 415/834-6500; www.gay.com/travel or www.outandabout.com) is an excellent online successor to the popular Out & About print magazine. It provides regularly updated information about gay-owned, gay-oriented, and gay-friendly lodging, dining, sightseeing, nightlife, and shopping establishments in every important destination worldwide.

The Canadian website GayTraveler (www.gaytraveler.ca) offers ideas and advice for gay travel all over the world.

The following travel guides are available at many bookstores, or you can order them from any online bookseller: Spartacus International Gay Guide (Bruno Gmünder Verlag; www.spartacusworld.com/gayguide) and Odysseus: The International Gay Travel Planner, 17th Edition (Odysseus Enterprises, Ltd.); and the Damron guides (www.damron.com), with separate, annual books for gay men and lesbians.

A brief guide to queer meeting places in Norway

Colourful bars and cafés, amazing parades and queer choirs. Here, 6 locals share their favourite LGBTIQ+ friendly places in Norway's biggest cities.

"Oslo Pride Festival is the highlight of the year of all queer events in Oslo. What I love about Oslo Pride is that it is the perfect mix between party and protest!"

A personal favourite of mine, and a somewhat more casual place, is Oche . There you can play digital darts, and order good food and drinks. It is a relatively new place for many, and they are really striving for diversity.

Majken Helén Evensen, Transformation Manager at Nordic Choice Hotels and Oslo Pride volunteer

"I would recommend Fincken night club, Bergen's only official queer hangout."

" Bergen Pride arranges happenings throughout the year. You have the Bergen Pride festival at the beginning of June, which lasts a week, and then there are debates, drag shows, and café happenings all year."

It varies a lot where the drag shows are held, but there is a place called Rebel that sometimes hosts a " drag and bubbles lunch ."

René Bjorheim, professional photographer and drag artist

"I am a good old-fashioned beer lover, so I am very happy to go to the microbrewery Trondhjem Mikrobryggeri . They also have a tradition of brewing their own pride beer when it's pride month in June and for Trondheim Pride in September.

"A little personal favourite of mine, where really everyone is welcome, is the old dive bar Fru Lundgreen . It's a rock music joint which I think is a great place to go in the evening, preferably after a concert.

"If you want a little more drinks and a bar atmosphere, then Tyven is nice. It's become a very important queer hangout in Trondheim."

"Ever since I came to Trondheim, Samfundet (The Student Union in Trondheim) has been an important place. They help celebrate important queer anniversaries, and it's a place where you can go to hear lectures, political debates, go to concerts, or just have a beer and dance."

" Trondheim Pride is the third-largest pride festival in Norway. Monthly queer concerts and an open mic 'queer stage' are also popular in Trondheim."

Eivind Rindal, deacon and Manager of Trondheim Pride

"Stavanger is a very open and international city. I recommend FRI BAR coffee & cocktails, a tiny queer bar located in Fargegaten in Stavanger. There is a lot happening there, like karaoke and DJs."

"If you go to Proud Mary Pub, you can see me and another drag queen on stage! We often perform there."

"Bardello is a nice place and very different. It's a bit like going to a cabaret show."

Mio Eyfjord, professional masker and hairdresser, and drag artist

"I really like Hundholmen Brygghus , a two floor brewhouse which is a restaurant during the day and nightclub in the evening. It's an incredibly nice, inclusive place, with great drinks and friendly staff."

"Then you have the night club Dama Di , an open, innovative and alternative place."

"For dining, you have Pangea Kitchen & Bar , which has a bit of a food truck feel. A place for everyone."

"In Bodø, there is a festival in the summer called Opptur . It has a great atmosphere. I went there with makeup on, so it's a very open-minded place where you can do as you please."

" Stormen Concert Hall has different events and a lot going on for young people, like dancing, music and theatre."

Jørgen Olsen, professional makeup artist and drag artist

" Arctic Pride is popular with people from all over the world. It is a bit unique as there is usually snow and wintry weather, and people who are dressed in colourful wool. In November, it starts to get dark in Tromsø, so the city is lit with lights and decorated with flags."

"Tromsø has quite a few pubs and clubs that are queer friendly.  Studentsamfunnet Driv (the student union) is a place that often hosts queer events."

"Check out Storgata Camping, Emmas Drømmekjøkken og Vinbar, Solid, Verdensteatret Cinematek and Bastard Bar. These are the places we often go to during Arctic Pride."

Heidi Hilmarsdotter Hansen, Troms and Finnmark Manager at FRI (The Norwegian Organisation for Sexual and Gender Diversity)

About Out Adventures

OUT Adventures was founded in 2008 and has been a provider of exclusive cruises, gay tours and adventure trips for well over a decade. Whether you’re looking to tackle the climb of a lifetime or want to wallow in luxury aboard a private yacht, they offer a slew of packages that deliver great value and great times. In 2020, they even began offering trips for lesbians with tours designed specifically for and hosted by women.

Explore all trips by Out Adventures

We’ve known Rob, one of the founders of Out Adventures since 2015 when we met in Los Angeles. We really like the products they offer, and we’ve even been on a few tours with them in Iceland. They’ve done it all before – resorts, cruises, independent travel, gay vacations and plus traveled with straight tour groups. While traveling with a straight group may not always present an issue, they realized there was room for a better, more comfortable travel experience. They wanted a safe, non-judgmental holiday that would allow you to be yourself while exposing you to parts of the world that not everyone has seen.

We definitely recommend going on a group tour with Out Adventures. Not only will they plan all the necessary details, but you’ll be joined by a group of friendly gays (or lesbians) – both singles, couples and friends traveling together all in the company of knowledge, local guides.

Gay Paree...and Gay London, and Gay Rome...

Gay and lesbian travel resources, guides, and tours in europe.

•  Gay traveler resources •  Gay-friendly lodgings •  Gay travel guidebooks •  Gay travel magazines •  Gay tours Much of Europe has grown to accept same-sex couples over the past few decades, and in most countries homosexual sex acts are legal. To be on the safe side, do a bit of research on the city or area you're planning to visit. As you might expect, smaller towns tend to be less accepting than cities.

The centers of European gay culture include London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, and, of course, Greece (though the modern Greek culture is rather more conservative than those famously fey ancient Homeric heroes, the Greek Islands in particular are still gay havens, particularly Mykonos; same goes for the party islands of Spain, especially Ibiza).

Resources for gay travel

International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association ( www.iglta.org ) - The best all-around resource. Members ($100 to join, plus $150 a year) get a newsletter, advice on specialist travel agencies (you can search for local ones on the Website), and a membership directory. Gay.com ( www.gay.com ) - All sorts of sub-sites that are jam-packed with all sorts of info on everything from gay-friendly hotels and restaurants to action groups and support hotlines to nightclubs and tours. There's no guarantee these sites will have an English-translated version, but the info is usually easy enough to navigate (believe me; I mine these things shamelessly to get the goods on the local gay scene for my guidebooks).

Gay travel blogs - There are probably tons, but among them are www.gaytravel.org , newgaytravelguide.com , www.insiderouttravel.com , www.gaycities.com (a crowdsourced site—meaning the content comes from the users; think TripAdvisor, only gay—but nothing on Italy yet), www.womentravel.info (for all women, but strong lesbian presence as well).

FunMaps.com ( www.funmaps.com ) - Interactive city maps showing hotels, restaurants, gay clubs and bars, shops, services, and attractions. (Actually, they work exactly like the Google maps on this site, only gay-themed.)

Gay-friendly lodgings

Purple Roofs ( www.purpleroofs.com ) - Loads of gay-friendly lodgings around the world—and, amazingly enough, the listings actually link you directly to the hotel's own Website (most travel sites out there, especially accommodations ones, try their darndest never to give you the opportunity to click off their site).

PinkChoice blog ( pinkchoice.blogspot.com ) - Blog about gay-friendly hotels. GayPlaces2Stay.com ( www.gayplaces2stay.com ) - I only count three dozen properties in all of Europe on this site, but hey, at least that's a start.

TAG Approved ( www.tagapproved.com ) - A self-styled gay housekeeping seal-of-approval outfit that bestows gay-friendly classification on hotels.

Lesbian & Gay Hospitality Exchange International ( www.lghei.org ) - A hospitality exchange network with 500 listings in 30 countries. Annual membership costs €25 ($35)—but then all your stays with local hosts are free !

Gay travel magazines

Out Traveler ( www.outtraveler.com ) - The publishers of Out and The Advocate put out this excellent quarterly gay travel mag.

Passport ( www.passportmagazine.com ) - Published 9 times a year.

Gay travel guidebooks & bookstores

Spartacus International Gay Guide (2010) - You gotta take the whole world at once with this thick tome (couldn't they do separate Europe, USA, Asia, etc. editions?), but it is the industry standard of gay guidebooks. Spartacus International Hotel & Restaurant Guide (2010) Damron Men's Travel Guide (2009) Damron Women's Traveller (2009) Damron Accommodations (12th edition) Frommer's Gay & Lesbian Europe (2003) - Yep, the mainstream guidebook publisher has actually put out a small series of gay guides. Ferrari International Guides - As a straight man, I can't actually speak to how accurate the various series of gay guides are, but from flipping through them all, this series seems by far to be the best thought-out, laid-out, and all-around useful of the lot. Unfortunately, they seem to have gone out of business after releasing the 2001 editions. You can still find copies for sale, though. Giovanni's Room ( www.giovannisroom.com ) - Famous gay bookstore in my hometown (Philly) has a wide selection and does mail order. Support independent booksellers! A Different Light ( www.adlbooks.com ) - Famous gay bookstore in my old hometown (New York), also has fabulous selection and will ship. Support independent booksellers!

Gay tours and travel agents

David Tours ( www.davidtours.com ) - Large selection of trips all across the globe. Based in Corona del Mar, CA.

Toto Tours ( www.tototours.com ) - Tours and cruises all over the world. Based in Chicago (not Kansas?)

R Family Vacations ( www.rfamilyvacations.com ) - Tour company co-founded by Kelli O'Donnell (a.k.a. Kelli Carpenter, most famous as the ex-Mrs. Rosie O'Donnell). Tours, trips, and cruises for the entire GLBT community—gays, lesbians, and their families.

Above and Beyond Tours ( www.abovebeyondtours.com ) - Mainly Australia, but plenty of Europe as well. Based in Palm Springs.

Now, Voyager ( www.nowvoyager.com ) - Based in San Francisco and one of the oldest gay and lesbian travel agencies, founded in 1984.

Will Wout van Aert Race the Tour de France? Why Visma-Lease a Bike Needs WVA More Than Ever

Van aert is inching back to full training after his devastating crash, but his race schedule is tbd. here's why his return to the tour should be a no-brainer..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Wout van Aert is back on the bike already after his horror crash, but will he be back at the Tour de France with Visma-Lease a Bike this summer for its big brawl with Tadej Pogačar?

That’s the question that’s rattling through Flanders right now.

Van Aert logged 18 hours of training last week to complete a stunning comeback from a crash in late March that left him with a punctured lung, broken collarbone, and seven cracked ribs.

He’s not slated to race his sixth-straight Tour de France this July – the Giro d’Italia and Olympic Games were his priorities – but it’s starting to look like Visma-Lease a Bike might need him at the grand boucle more than it ever has before.

Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is still deep in his own rehabilitation from injury while his rivals are racing hot toward the Tour’s grand départ .

With the timelines of any “comeback” uncertain for Vingegaard, Van Aert could be the key to Visma-Lease a Bike lighting up the TdF for a third year in a row.

Visma-Lease a Bike wasn’t able to confirm Van Aert’s future schedule when asked Tuesday by Velo .

However, hints at a him lining out for the Tour of Norway later this month put weight behind rumors blowing through Belgian media that WVA will return to the Tour this summer to help Visma-Lease a Bike foil Giro pink jersey Pogačar in his quest for the grand tour double.

“Wout isn’t at the stage where we can make that decision yet,” team director Merijn Zeeman told Wielerflits of Van Aert’s schedule. “In the best-case scenario, Norway is feasible for him. But we can’t say anything definite about that now.”

Wout Van Aert has been winching his way back toward full training.

It’s all an unknown for Vingegaard: ‘We don’t know how my recovery will be’

Van Aert is one of two very big moving pieces in the Visma-Lease a Bike masterplan right now.

The squad is keeping faith that Tour de France dominator Vingegaard can rebound from the battered lung and broken bones he sustained at Itzulia Basque Country in the week after Van Aert was hospitalized.

Vingegaard even suggested himself in a video update Tuesday that while he’s back on the bike, his form isn’t a guarantee.

“I feel good, it’s improving day by day,” Vingegaard said via social media . “I still have some things to recover from but it’s going better and better. Of course, I hope to be there at the start of the Tour de France.

“We don’t know exactly how my shape and how my recovery will go,” he continued. “But I will do everything I can to get there in my top shape.”

Van Aert and Vingegaard’s summers could be interlinked.

The recovery of one could impact the calendar of the other as Zeeman and his staffers face decisions that might make-or-break Visma-Lease a Bike’s season.

Vingegaard or not, Visma-Lease a Bike needs WVA

Van Aert chose to train rather than race his way toward a classics peak.

Van Aert is currently dovetailing saddle time with rehab work at Belgium’s leading “LAB” facility as he looks toward the summer.

With seven and a half weeks to go until the grand départ , there’s every chance the 29-year-old will be tip-top for the Tour.

He didn’t join Tiesj Benoot, Dylan van Baarle, Matteo Jorgenson, Steven Kruijswijk, and Sepp Kuss this week on a recon of the Tour’s stage 9 gravel sectors, but that’s no surprise given he’s still got a half-dozen healing bones.

Visma-Lease a Bike will pin all its hopes on the full comeback of its Belgian “Big” as the questions continue to swirl over the status of Vingegaard.

Visma-Lease a Bike also wasn’t able to confirm Vingegaard’s pre-Tour plans to Velo on Tuesday, but the Dane admitted he’s in a race against time to match the “100 percent” benchmark that’s been set on his return to defend his maillot jaune .

Tour-bound Pogačar is currently slaying the Giro d’Italia , and yellow jersey contenders Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel are back to full-scale training after they also came down in the brutal Basque crash.

It will be the most competitive grand tour in years – and if Pogačar races in France the way he’s erupting the race in Italy this week, it will be intense from day one.

Top brass in Visma-Lease a Bike HQ are hopeful Vingegaard will recover fully for June 29, but the margins are looking tight.

Vingegaard already opted to skip an altitude camp this month, and a planned DNS at Critérium du Dauphiné means he likely wouldn’t race before he lines out alongside Pogačar and Co. at the grand départ in Nice.

If Vingegaard makes it to the Tour he could still be a few watts short. In which case, Visma-Lease a Bike will need to be all-guns blazing – Wout included – for its battle royale with Pogačar and his all-swinging UAE Emirates “super team”.

Jonas is back riding on his bike outside again. Hear what he has to say about his recovery and the Tour de France. pic.twitter.com/Rf1d3odoeM — Team Visma | Lease a Bike (@vismaleaseabike) May 7, 2024

Van Aert could work out the cornerstone of a Visma-Lease a Bike Tour de France defense in the face of a full parade of GC powerhouses.

In the 2022 Tour, the “Swiss knife” Belgian was a GC watchdog for Vingegaard on every gradient available. And just as importantly, he served to defizz Pogačar by tempting him into wild long-range attacks, hilltop sprints, and more.

If Visma-Lease a Bike is able to pop Pogačar at this summer’s Tour in as spectacular a fashion as it did the last two summers, the option could be there for Van Aert to jump out a few days early and extend his recovery for the Olympic Games.

The Paris time trial and road races follow hot on the heels of the Tour’s big finish in Nice and are so important to Van Aert that they influenced his initial choice to debut at the Giro d’Italia.

So important, in fact, they’d be worth the tarnish of a Tour de France DNF.

And if Vingegaard doesn’t beat the ticking clock to be competitive at the Tour de France?

Van Aert gives Visma-Lease a Bike a co-captain to share the spotlight and lift the pressure from GC next-in-line Kuss.

Van Aert could run free and rampage through stages on days that #GCKuss is on pause. It would build just the right training load for him to be raging and ready for his push at his elusive first gold medal at the Games.

Van Aert spoke in a recent Visma-Lease a Bike documentary of his angst at having to watch his teammates take on Paris-Roubaix while he was banged-up and in bandages.

If he’s fit for the Tour de France, it’s hard to see WVA happily choosing to sit out the Tour de France, too.

How to plan a memorable first-time alaska cruise.

The remarkable scenery of Glacier Bay is a highlight on many Alaskan cruise itineraries.

Embark on a journey through Alaska's pristine wilderness aboard a cruise ship, where you can experience the awe-inspiring nature of the last American frontier in comfort.

As you glide past icy fjords and into secluded bays, seize the chance to witness magnificent glaciers up close, and keep your eyes peeled for the mighty bears, whales and eagles that call this rugged landscape home.

However, don't make the mistake of thinking you’ll have peace and quiet. Remote it may be, but Alaska is one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations.

Ports such as Skagway can accommodate up to four large cruise ships at once. Smaller ports can easily become overwhelmed with visitors, while popular shore excursions sell out well in advance. As such, there’s a lot to understand about Alaska cruises before booking.

Cruise Lines In Alaska

Most major cruise lines sail in Alaska, ranging from large, modern ships full of amenities, down to smaller, older ships with more outside space and a relaxed vibe. Expedition cruises on even smaller ships focus more on wildlife and geology.

When picking a line and ship, consider your choice of cabin carefully. Although inside cabins offer a cheaper deal, the value of a balcony cabin shouldn't be underestimated. On scenic cruising days, you’ll be able to enjoy the landscape—and potentially wildlife—without jostling for position.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries Explained

There are two main types of Alaskan cruise itinerary: the Inside Passage roundtrip, and a one-way Gulf voyage. Each route offers unique opportunities to see both glaciers and wildlife, with specifics depending on the season.

Apple iPad 2024 Release Date: Your Final, Complete Guide To What And When

Katy perry met gala dresses go viral but they re ai fakes, huawei pura 70 ultra global version just available with features that outdo samsung galaxy.

Alaska is a popular cruise destination in the summer.

Seven-night Inside Passage cruises typically depart from hubs like Seattle or Vancouver, calling at popular stops like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. Many feature a scenic cruising tour of the breathtaking Glacier Bay National Park.

For example, this 7-night itinerary on Norwegian Encore including all those highlights is available between April and October in both 2024 and 2025.

For those seeking deeper exploration, one-way Gulf voyages include the highlights of the Inside Passage route, but also venture closer to the Arctic Circle. Typically, such itineraries start or end at Whittier or Seward near Anchorage.

This 7-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises includes port calls at Sitka, the historic Icy Strait Point, and scenic cruising of the Hubbard Glacier on the way from Vancouver to Seward.

Some cruise lines combine Gulf voyages with curated tours before or after the cruise for a comprehensive Alaska experience. Such tour packages include famous rail journeys, visits to Denali National Park, and optional overnight stays in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Longer Alaskan cruise itineraries, especially those on smaller ships or expedition lines, may include remote locales like Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands.

Port Excursions In Alaska

Exploring ashore on guided excursions is a highlight of any Alaskan cruise. Each port offers unique opportunities to engage with the natural environment and local culture, but the popularity of cruising in the region means advance booking is essential.

Some of the most popular tours may fill up just days after they go on sale, in some cases months before the actual cruise. Consider independent tour options, but read the terms and conditions carefully and check for reviews from previous cruisers.

Mendenhall Glacier is a popular cruise excursion from Juneau on Alaska cruises.

Alaskan capital Juneau is renowned for its glacier tours and wildlife viewing opportunities. The hike through backcountry to the Mendenhall glacier requires a good level of physical fitness, while whale watching boat trips are just as popular.

The historic Skagway train tour along the Klondike route in a vintage coach, featuring stunning vistas and rich gold rush era history, is a must-do.

Cultural tours in Ketchikan often include visits to the Saxman Native Village, where totem poles and traditional dance performances offer insight into the local Tlingit culture.

When To Cruise Alaska

Alaska is not a year-round cruising spot, and the season is shorter than most leading cruise destinations. Alaska’s cruising season ranges from late April to late September.

April : Expect relatively dry days, though not completely devoid of light showers and fog. Bears are only just emerging from their winter slumber so sightings are unlikely, but you may see eagles and humpback whales.

May : With more ship options, relatively dry weather, long hours of daylight, and good value fares, May is a popular time to cruise Alaska before the peak. Wildlife, including migrating shorebirds, whales, and bears, are more visible.

June : Mild temperatures and long daylight hours—up to 19 per day—provide optimal cruising conditions. Enjoy vibrant greenery and more wildlife sightings, but prepare for the possibility of mosquitoes (especially on trips inland) and variable weather.

July : July brings mild temperatures, often reaching the 70s, but it's also the start of the wetter period. Expect long hours of daylight ideal for wildlife sightings, including salmon runs and bear activity. However, peak cruise season means high fares, busier ships, and busier ports. Local produce starts to feature heavily on menus shoreside.

Juneau, Alaska, has a spectacular natural setting and is a gateway to many exciting outdoor ... [+] experiences.

August : Expect rain, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid-60s and nights cooling to the upper 40s, and ample wildlife viewing opportunities, as bears and bald eagles are active near salmon streams. Fares, along with the number of daylight hours, fall later in the month.

September : Expect cooler temperatures and frequent rain, which may risk the success of outdoor excursions. Despite less demand, wildlife viewing remains good with bears still active near salmon streams and whales still present in coastal waters. September also offers a chance to see the northern lights .

What To Pack For Alaska Cruises

Packing smart for an Alaska cruise means being prepared for both adventure in the great outdoors and the comforts of cruise life.

An Alaskan journey demands attire for cooler climates. Essentials include a fleece jacket, thermal socks, and a warm hat to combat the cold, along with sweaters and thermal underwear for effective layering. Waterproof gear such as a reliable rain jacket and waterproof pants are crucial for unexpected rain or snow showers.

You should also consider waterproof bags to protect your electronics and important documents during shore excursions.

Sun protection is vital due to the deceptive Alaskan sun. High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are necessary to guard against UV rays and snow glare.

Footwear should include waterproof hiking boots for rugged terrain and slip-proof sandals for the deck, accompanied by thermal or wool socks for additional warmth.

For shore excursions, a collapsible backpack and a thermal water bottle will keep you organized and hydrated, while binoculars can greatly enhance wildlife tours. A simple first aid kit, sea-sickness bands, and insect repellent are other wise packing choices.

History Of LGBT Rights In The United States

The history of LGBT rights in the United States can be traced as far back as the 1920s when the first documented gay rights organization was founded. However, the movement for LGBTQ rights gained significant momentum in the 20th century. This section will provide a brief overview of the events and organizations that have shaped the history of LGBT rights in the United States.

One notable event in the history of LGBT rights is the Stonewall Riots, which took place in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City . This violent demonstration against police raids and discrimination is now considered a pivotal moment in the modern gay rights movement. Since then, various groups and movements have formed to advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ community.

During the 1950s and 1960s, the homophile movement emerged, consisting of organizations such as ONE, Inc., and the Daughters of Bilitis. These groups aimed to challenge societal norms and promote the rights and dignity of the LGBTQ community. Anti-sodomy laws, which were in place in many states, were often used to discriminate against and persecute members of the LGBT community. It wasn’t until 2003 that the US Supreme Court invalidated these laws in Lawrence v. Texas.

In 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an executive order banning gay and lesbian individuals from federal employment, further highlighting the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ community. This order remained in effect until it was overturned in 1975.

The American Psychiatric Association played a significant role in changing societal attitudes toward the LGBTQ community when it removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1973. This important step led to the gradual acceptance of LGBTQ individuals within society.

The 2010s saw notable advancements in same-sex marriage rights. Legalization occurred on a state-by-state basis until the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, which legalized same-sex marriage across the United States.

Efforts to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity have also been an essential part of the LGBTQ rights movement. In 2020, the Supreme Court ruled in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia , that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to cases of employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

It’s important to note that situations surrounding LGBT rights can change rapidly, and information can become outdated. Readers should seek current advice before traveling and be aware of potential risks. Remain vigilant and be aware that bad actors exist everywhere. Local perspectives on LGBT rights can differ from those afforded to tourists. Reaching out to relevant LGBT advocacy groups such as the Human Rights Campaign , Lambda Legal , or GLAAD can provide further information and resources.

The LGBT Legal Situation In The United States

In the United States, LGBT rights have undergone significant progress in the past few decades, with changes in federal and state laws, as well as landmark cases in the US Supreme Court. However, it is crucial to remember that situations can change rapidly, and it is essential to stay vigilant and consistently seek current advice.

Federal Law and US Supreme Court Decisions: Some of the most critical advancements in LGBT rights have resulted from notable Supreme Court cases. In 2003, the court struck down remaining state sodomy laws in Lawrence v. Texas , effectively decriminalizing same-sex sexual activity. A monumental victory for same-sex couples came with Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, when the court ruled that same-sex marriage was a constitutional right, making it legal across all 50 states.

Anti-Discrimination Laws and Protections: The legal landscape for discrimination protections varies across the country. Presently, 22 states have employment protections for LGBT individuals, and 20 states have hate or bias crime protections. The Equality Act, a comprehensive federal legislation aimed at providing nationwide anti-discrimination protections, has recently passed in the US House of Representatives but still faces challenges in the Senate.

Adoption Rights: Same-sex couples have the legal right to marry and adopt children in the United States. Following the ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges , adoption rights for same-sex couples have been recognized, though local adoption rules and regulations may still vary by state.

The Armed Forces and the U.S. Military: Since the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2011, LGBT individuals have been allowed to serve openly in the U.S. military. Furthermore, the ban on transgender individuals serving in the military was lifted in 2021.

It is indispensable to understand that the legal situation concerning LGBT rights in the United States may differ for local people versus tourists. Tourists should take note of relevant local laws and remain vigilant.

Active national organizations and advocacy groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) , work tirelessly to advance LGBT rights and monitor legal developments.

The LGBT Social Situation In The United States

Discrimination against the LGBTQ community in the United States remains a persistent issue despite significant progress made in recent years. Both local community members and tourists alike can face challenges related to their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. It is essential to stay informed and vigilant, as situations can change rapidly, and individual experiences can vary.

LGBTQ individuals in the United States may encounter discrimination in various aspects of their lives, such as employment, housing, and education. They may also experience hate crimes, harassment, and bullying. Transgender youth, in particular, may face increased challenges and risk of suicide.

Public opinion on LGBTQ issues has evolved in recent years, with a majority supporting equality and same-sex marriages. A Gallup poll conducted in 2020 indicated growing acceptance of LGBTQ rights. However, conservative and religious freedom groups continue to resist these changes, sometimes resulting in rhetoric or legislation that threatens LGBTQ rights.

Despite this, the LGBTQ community continues to advocate for their rights and work towards equality. Organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign contribute to this effort, focusing on issues like public accommodations, family rights, and the protection of LGBTQ youth.

To ensure personal safety, LGBTQ individuals should remain cautious and updated on current events related to LGBTQ rights both locally and nationally. It is also beneficial to connect with relevant LGBTQ advocacy groups for support and resources. Additionally, it may be helpful to identify safe spaces, such as LGBTQ-friendly businesses and establishments, as a precautionary measure.

Trans Rights In The United States

Transgender individuals face a range of challenges and discrimination in the United States. Although there have been significant advancements in recent years, they continue to experience disparities in rights and protections compared to their cisgender counterparts.

At the federal level, there has been slow progress in terms of protections for transgender individuals. The landmark 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges case granted same-sex couples the right to marry, but it did not address wider issues of discrimination based on gender identity. However, recent changes to the Equality Act under President Joe Biden’s administration have expanded the protection of transgender people from discrimination in multiple areas, such as housing, education, and public services.

One important aspect of transgender rights is protection against hate crimes and harassment. The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, signed in 2009, expanded hate crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. This federal legislation helps in prosecuting and punishing those who commit acts of violence against transgender individuals.

In the context of education, transgender youth face unique issues, including the ability to access appropriate facilities and participate in sports. Title IX, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs, has been extended to protect transgender students. However, controversy surrounding these policies continues, often fueled by fear and misinformation.

Transgender individuals looking to serve in the military have faced a long and complex struggle. Following the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2010, various administrative restrictions on transgender service members were removed. In 2021, President Biden signed an executive order lifting a ban on transgender individuals serving openly in the U.S. military, providing a more inclusive environment for all members of the armed forces.

Employment discrimination is another critical issue for transgender rights. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin in employment. In the 2020 Supreme Court case Bostock v. Clayton County, the Court expanded the definition of “sex” to include sexual orientation and gender identity, providing greater protection for transgender employees.

Anti-discrimination laws and federal agencies play a critical role in safeguarding the rights of transgender people in the United States. Nevertheless, it is important for transgender individuals to be aware of the ongoing challenges, including potential changes in legislation and enforcement on a state-by-state basis. Vigilance and connection with local LGBTQ advocacy organizations can help provide necessary support and advocacy for transgender rights in the community.

The Future For The Queer Community In The United States

As the United States continues to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and equality, it can be observed that recent policy initiatives and legislative efforts indicate a promising future. Following President Biden’s Proclamation on LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June 2021, his administration has championed LGBTQ+ equality as a focal point for policy changes and reforms.

In Congress and state legislatures, an increasing number of bills are introduced to promote and protect LGBTQ+ rights, including the Equality Act. Though there have been instances of bills restricting LGBTQ+ rights, the overall trend indicates positive progress. Advocacy groups, such as the Human Rights Campaign and Lambda Legal, actively lobby and drive initiatives in favor of LGBTQ+ people.

However, it is essential for individuals to remain aware of the changing landscape, as situations can change rapidly, and the information available may be outdated. To ensure personal safety, one should keep up-to-date with local laws and seek advice from trustworthy sources before traveling or relocating.

While the future of LGBTQ+ equality may appear promising on a national level, progress may differ among local communities and for various demographics, such as residents versus tourists. To protect personal rights and create a more inclusive environment, individuals can engage with local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and collaborate on initiatives focused on equality and education.

In conclusion, the United States demonstrates significant progress towards LGBTQ+ equality, but vigilance and active participation of local communities and individuals is vital to ensure their rights are protected and promoted.

Protect Yourself While Travelling In Gay United States

In the United States, LGBT rights have come a long way over the years, with many strides made to ensure equal rights for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity. However, it is important to protect yourself as situations can change, and there may be bad actors, whether you are a local or a tourist.

Discrimination and Legal Protections Anti-discrimination laws have been enacted, such as The Equality Act, which passed the US House of Representatives in February 2021, aiming to protect against LGBT discrimination in various aspects of life. While it hasn’t passed the Senate yet, these protections are essential for ensuring the human rights of LGBT individuals. The federal Fair Housing Act further helps protect against sex discrimination, including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, in housing situations.

Education, Employment, and Housing In education, employment, and housing, it is important to be aware of your rights and report any instances of discrimination, violence, harassment, or bullying you encounter. Mishandling of your privacy may also be a concern, so it is crucial to know your rights concerning confidentiality and how your information is treated.

Public Accommodations and Services Public accommodations, such as restaurants, hotels, and retail stores, are required to treat everyone equally, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In case you face any discrimination, it is helpful to be knowledgeable about state and federal laws and seek remedies accordingly.

Gay-Friendly Tours Around The World

Five days in Norway

gay tours norway

On the other hand, there are certainly places, attractions and experiences that you will want to include. What’s more, you can still encounter the highlights of Norway in as little as five days and in this article, we take a look at how to get the most from your upcoming adventure.

Oslo - The opera house

Travel Itinerary:

Day 1 – Explore the City of Oslo

When you first arrive in Norway, take that first day to explore the city of Oslo . You will encounter the city of Bergen shortly but Oslo is a great opportunity to ease your way into the adventure.

Oslo is situated in the midst of a truly attractive mountain and fjord landscape but the city itself is also overflowing with attractions, from the Opera house and Vigeland Sculpture Park to the Viking Ship Museum and the National Gallery. This artistic haven is also accompanied by luscious parks as well as cutting-edge architecture, elements that makes this such a pleasant city for a stroll.

And then there is the culinary scene, for Oslo has a vibrant coffee scene and some of the most exciting eateries in Norway, like Maemo - adorned with three Michelin stars. In fact, you will find everything from shrimp and hotdogs to tapas, sushi and new (and old) nordic cuisine in Oslo. As if that’s not enough, this city is also home to some of the most vibrant nightlife spots in Scandinavia.

Day 2 – Take an Adventure into the Mountains and Fjords of Norway

You might already know about this tour, Norway in a nutshell®. Departing from Oslo, this tour begins with a train journey through the mountains and includes a memorable fjord cruise on the spectacular Aurlandsfjord and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord . For many visitors, the fjords of Norway are the highlight and this cruise enables one to gain a unique perspective of the scenery, while also feeling immersed in the surroundings.

After the fjord cruise, you will also arrive at a beautiful little town called Gudvangen and from here, you will travel by bus through scenic landscapes until the town of Voss where you continue to Bergen by train.

Simply put, this is the best way to see as much as possible in Norway in just a short amount of time, which explains why it is called Norway in a nutshell®!

Day 3 – Take a Day to Relax and Wander Around Bergen

Bergen is surrounded by hills and one of the most historical cities in Norway. During medieval times, this was an important seaport and a base for the Hanseatic League. With this in mind, you can still see some of the Hanseatic buildings in Bryggen which date back to the 12th century. Moreover, the museums and galleries in Bergen are especially popular, while walking is by far the best way to explore.

In this sense, Bergen is more like a large town and neighborhoods such as Ladegården and Sandviken offer a nice insight into the local way of life in Norway. In terms of your travel itinerary, this is also just a nice opportunity to relax in between adventures and take some more time to enjoy the food, amenities and architecture of Norwegian civilization. Read more about the city of Bergen and find things to do in Bergen here .

Day 4 – Travel to Lysefjord and the famous “Pulpit Rock”

Departing from Bergen, you will take an express bus through dramatic scenery to Stavanger on the coast of Norway. From here, it’s possible to take a wonderful cruise to see the majestic “Pulpit Rock” and some of the most remarkable landscapes, features and natural attractions in Norway. In many ways, a fjord cruise is the only way to witness many of these features and natural beauty of the Norwegian fjord landscape.

However, you will also have the opportunity to climb to the top of this incredible formation for some truly spectacular views in Norway. At more than 604 meters above Lysefjord, this plateau is one of the most iconic in the world and often the subject for travel magazines and social media platforms. Following this cruise, you will return to Stavanger for the evening for some local cuisine and a relaxing stay in comfortable accommodation.

To save effort and time, there is also an option to combine a visit to the Pulpit Roc k with the Norway in a nutshell® tour. When booking the tour, a hotel stay in Stavanger can be added in the same booking.

Day 5 – Enjoy a Scenic Train Journey Back to Oslo

After an enjoyable overnight stay in Stavanger, you take a train back to Oslo in the morning. As with every other journey on this travel itinerary, the scenery is spectacular along the way. More specifically, this is just a fantastic way to finish off an enjoyable adventure in Norway.

Just so you know, for those who might need or want to get back to Oslo quickly, there is also an option to taking an overnight train back to Oslo on the previous day (day four) from Bergen.

Final Thoughts

Taking an organized tour is usually the best alternative for making the most of your limited time in Norway. Furthermore, planning ahead is a prerequisite for experiencing the fjords and natural attractions in each region to the fullest. If you have more time to spare, it’s possible to add overnight stays along the way or even venture north to see the spectacular Trolltunga and some of the other fjords of Norway not mentioned here. Either way, five days is just enough time to see Norway in a nutshell® and the above travel itinerary should help you make the most of your time.

I enjoyed the days in Norway. It is a fast paced itinerary but you never get bored at one place. Despite the pace I had quite some hours at each place where we stopped and hiked around. The trip definition matched my expectations. My travel fellows are quite diverse in terms of culture background and age. I think intrepid did a good job to make a satisfying tour for such a diverse group.

Magic of the Fjords - 7 days

Everything in the pre-trip preparations was excellent. They are will organized on-line for entering travel information and payments. Our contact was easily available for questions or other information. The tour we signed up for was run by VOS (Voyages of Scandinavia). There was just one issue - our tour voucher had the wrong first night hotel. But, as mentioned before, our contact was readily available to advise us. Just a slight inconvenience. The tour itself is a very good itinerary, particular for people who like free time to do as they wish. My advise to VOS is to provide a bit more recommendations on things to do in each area. We found we had to rely on our guide books and tourist centers for information. Otherwise, the bookings for hotels, trains and boats proved very convenient.

What people love about norwegian fjords tours.

Active and rewarding trip.
Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

New airline rules will make it easier to get refunds for canceled flights. Here's what to know.

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 25, 2024 / 12:56 PM EDT / CBS News

New consumer protection rules will soon entitle airline passengers to automatic refunds when flights are canceled or significantly delayed, while also requiring airlines to reveal  junk fees  upfront.

In total, the new rules could save travelers $500 million annually, Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday, describing the regulations as "the biggest expansion of passenger rights in the department's history."

They take aim at some of the most common complaints against airlines, such as delays and difficulties getting refunds. Airlines will also have to disclose all possible fees, such as added costs for seat selection, when advertising a fare.

The regulations are likely to effect in October, officials said. Here's what to know about the new rules and what they mean for you.

You'll get an automatic refund for delayed or canceled flights

The first rule mandates that airlines promptly refund customers when flights are meaningfully disrupted or delayed. Airlines will have to refund customers the full ticket prices, including airline-imposed fees, as well as government taxes and fees.

In theory, passengers are already entitled to such refunds, but in practice airlines don't always provide them, Buttigieg noted. He said the new rule benefits infrequent fliers in particular, who may be less familiar with their rights.

This rule will save customers the hassle of dealing with a chatbot or completing a cumbersome claims process to receive refunds they're entitled to anyway when flights don't take off as scheduled.

Airlines often offer customers compensation in the form of vouchers or miles with values that are less than the flight's original cost. And passengers often must engage with customer service agents or chatbots to secure refunds, which can lead them to give up on the process altogether, according to Buttigieg.

How long of a delay will qualify for a refund?

The new rule defines what constitutes a "significantly changed" flight: a delay of at least three hours for a domestic flight, and at least six hours for an international flight. That was previously left to the discretion of the airline.

The rule says passengers will get automatic refunds in those cases as long as they don't accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered by the airline.

Passengers will also be entitled to refunds for other significant flight changes, according to the Department of Transportation.

These changes include flights whose departure or arrival airports change, that add connections or downgrade passengers to a different level of service. If a flight requires a passenger with a disability to make a connection at an airport or on a flight that is less accommodating, that also qualifies for a refund.

How long will it take to get a refund?

Airlines will have seven days to automatically refund passengers who purchased their tickets with a credit card, and 20 calendar days for other payment methods, the Transportation Department said.

"No more defaulting to vouchers or credits when consumers may not even realize they're entitled to cash," Buttigieg said.

Can I get a refund for delayed bags?

Yes, checked bag delays are also covered.

When bags aren't delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight's arrival at its gate, passengers will get a refund for their checked bag fee.   On international flights, bags that don't arrive within 15 to 30 hours, depending on a flight's length, are covered by the rule.

What other refunds will be available?

Airlines must also refund the costs of services customers paid for but then didn't receive on the flight, such as wifi, seat selection or in-flight entertainment, the Transportation Department said.

For instance, if passengers buy wifi access but it doesn't work properly, they are entitled to a refund for the service.

What is happening with surprise fees?

Transportation officials also announced a second rule on Wednesday that targets "junk" or surprise fees, which are charges that aren't typically disclosed to a consumer ahead of purchase.

Under the rule, airlines must disclose all fees the first time that airfare is advertised on an airline's site. Hyperlinks don't count, according to the agency.

The rule is designed to protect consumers against confusion caused by "drip pricing"  by requiring airlines to disclose how much these additional fees will cost up front. That includes amounts airlines charge consumers to check bags, carry on bags, select seats, and change or cancel flights.

The rule is designed to help make it easier for passengers to estimate the full cost of flying so they can make an informed purchase.

Are seats guaranteed if I buy a ticket?

Under the second rule, airlines will also have to make clear to customers that if they buy a ticket, they're guaranteed a seat — even if they don't fork over additional money to choose where on the plane that seat is located.

How will I know I'm seeing the actual flight price?

The second rule also bars airlines from advertising artificially low prices that don't factor in mandatory fees.

The Transportation Department said this will end "discount bait-and-switch tactics" that dangle deceptive discounts to convince travelers to buy tickets.

What do airlines say about the new rules?

Airlines for America, a trade group for large U.S. carriers, noted that refund complaints to the Transportation Department have fallen sharply since mid-2020.

A spokesperson for the group said airlines "offer a range of options — including fully refundable fares — to increase accessibility to air travel and to help customers make ticket selections that best fit their needs."

The group said the 11 largest U.S. airlines issued $43 billion in customer refunds from 2020 through 2023.

While Buttigieg said airlines aren't "enthusiastic" about being held to a higher standard, he believes the new rules will build passenger confidence in companies and ultimately benefit the industry as a whole.

Buttigieg also said he hopes the new rules will push carriers to improve the consumer experience. For example, if an airline knows it will automatically owe customers refunds for canceled flights, it might invest more in precise scheduling, and ultimately reduce the number of cancellations overall.

Mongolia Gay Travel

Gay hikers will experience 'the road less travelled' in mongolia..

Travel is a relatively new industry in Mongolia. This is exactly why adventurers looking to ‘get off the beaten track’ love it. The massive yet scarcely populated country is the perfect launchpad for horseback riding (which Mongolia is famous for), hiking, cycling and numerous watersports. One-fifth of the country is registered national parks—a ratio the government is looking to increase! It should also come as no surprise the historically nomadic people love camping, and overnighting in a remote yurt is basically a Mongolian right of passage. Happy trails!

Quick Facts

  • Capital City: Ulaanbaatar
  • Currency: Mongolian tögrög (MNT)
  • Languages: Mongolian
  • Best Time of Year to Visit: June–September

LGBT Rights in Mongolia

Gay mongolia travel, best places to visit in mongolia.

Mongolians tend to be very hush-hush regarding sexual orientation. Consequently, public displays of affection will likely cause a stir. However, the population tends to be very adaptable, and attitudes are quickly changing. Homosexuality was legalized in 2003, and Ulaanbaatar’s first LGBT centre opened in 2007.

Gay Activity : Legal Lesbian Activity: Legal Gay Marriage: Not recognized Right to Change Gender: Ambiguous Same-Sex Adoption: Single only

The local LGBT scene is fairly quiet, and gay men and women don’t have many options regarding meeting places. According to Lonely Planet, popular LGBT hotspots change frequently, so please take our recommendations with a grain of salt—things may have changed since publishing. It should be noted Mongolia has hosted annual Pride celebrations since 2013.

3. Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Directly connected to Ulaanbaatar by a single paved road, this gorgeous national park is the perfect spot to kick start an unforgettable adventure.

2. Gobi Desert

The world’s sixth largest desert is also one of its most beautiful. And to see her at her best, we recommend riding a camel to Khongoryn Els’ rolling dunes.

1. Nadaam and the Golden Eagle Festival

All visitors should align their tour with one of Mongolia’s famous festivals, of which there are many. Nadaam (meaning ‘Games’) in July is a three-day event full of wrestling, horseback riding and archery. Meanwhile, The Golden Eagle Festivals in September and October celebrate the country’s Khazak connection. Both festivals also offer the opportunity to enjoy plenty of regional fare including infamous airag —fermented mare’s milk. Bottoms up!

Best Time to Visit: June through September—the weather is warm and pleasant. Nadaam is also in July and is usually a highlight of most travelers’ visit.
