Former rock singer and expedition leader Jonny Bealby has been to the deepest reaches of the Arabian Peninsula’s Empty Quarter, traversed the Silk Route and clocked up more than 90 different countries’ stamps in his passport. But for him there’s something unique about this part of Argentina, deep in southern Patagonia near the city of El Calafate and the legendary Perito Moreno Glacier. ‘What makes it so singular from a riding perspective is the vastness of the steppe,’ says Bealby. ‘It’s almost unimaginable. There is nothing here but grassland which means there is no way to distinguish scale – you look at the peaks, the tail end of the Andes, and think “I’ll reach them in a couple of hours”, but they never get closer. Above, the sky is massive. When the sun shines, it creates the most incredible multicoloured prisms of light – it’s spectacular.’ Bealby’s tours, which can range from 11 to 18 days, celebrate slow and immersive travel, spotting herds of guanaco and staying in remote estancias. James Mahon knows Patagonia like the back of his hand, having spent the past 20 years guiding and adventuring here, as well as taking part in a horse-riding endurance race in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park and winning it three times. No one else has managed that feat. He’s also picked up a number of nicknames along the way. The farm owners with whom he raced call him ‘bagual’, after the Sierra Baguales mountain range where large herds of wild horses live, and where Mahon’s marathon champion Gavilán came from. Jakob von Plessen calls him ‘mapuche’ – after the indigenous South America inhabitants – because he has explored the region’s ancient Indian trails so extensively. When not working with the Jakotango founder, Mahon tailors a special trip to the far south of Patagonia, on the Chilean side. ‘It is absolutely stunning down there, really rugged, with no tourists at all,’ he says. My passion for Patagonia goes back to when I was 12 and my stepfather took me here for the hunting season. No one likes to talk about hunting these days, but those trips were transformative. We’d saddle up a couple of horses, grab rifles and set off into the wilderness. It was March, the start of autumn, when the southern beech trees – the nothofagus for which the region is famous – would change colour. There might even be snow. At first light we’d see the steam as rutting stags exhaled into the morning mist. It was all so raw. Each day would end beside a campfire, our food hanging from a tree. That was when my love for the landscape started.

I was born in Austria and moved to Argentina in 1984 with my mother and stepfather when I was four years old. We had a farm on the coastal Pampas near Mar del Plata. I rode to a little primary school every day. There were 30 children and just one teacher, and the blackboard was divided into three sections so that pupils from different years could learn at the same time.

I finished my education at St Andrew’s Scots School just outside Buenos Aires . After that, I took a gap year in Kenya where I worked as a volunteer tour guide for Offbeat Safaris . I ended up staying for 12 years, splitting my time between east Africa and Argentina, buying kit, tents and tack, then horses and, from 2004, leading expeditions. As the years progressed, I did more and more work in Patagonia. When I met my future wife, Zaira, it was time to settle down.

Patagonia is a rugged place. We’re based in the lake district – the more developed, populated end – but you can still ride here for a week and see no one else. It’s not wild in the way that Africa is, with lions and dangerous game, but in Kenya you come across people quite often and there’s mobile-phone reception. In the past 30 years the Maasai have changed, too; they zip around on motorbikes dressed in suits.

Here, there’s none of that. The sensation of being remote and distant is special. The few people you stumble upon tend to be local gauchos and they’re interesting characters. They live almost like hermits. The further south you go, the more scarce individuals become – and the better it gets.

There are several different Patagonias. I appreciate the vastness of the steppe, but it’s like a desert and the wind howls all day. It always makes me think of being on a boat in the middle of the ocean , surrounded only by the horizon. The coasts are dramatic and beautiful but they are a magnet for settlers as well as travellers.

It’s the mountains I long for. Everything is clean: the water, the air, the snow, the rain – even the dust. Nothing is poisonous. Almost everything is edible. If I was the last man standing on the planet and you had to drop me somewhere, I could survive in the Patagonian Andes. The peaks are like a womb in a hostile place where I can be nourished. Around dusk, the sky turns orange with these soaring, lenticulated clouds – I haven’t seen anything like that anywhere in the world.

A horse opens up the region like nothing else. There’s only one major road – the National Route 40 – that runs north to south across Argentina, with tracks leading off to farms and homesteads. Many areas are unreachable unless you walk or ride. I’m not that keen on hiking; it’s far more convenient to travel mounted as you can pack supplies for a week or two and be completely independent.

As a young man, I used to hang out with gauchos, herding, branding, lassoing and castrating cattle, and I learned to break horses in their rough-and-ready cowboy style. Patagonia is full of semi-wild breeds; we round them up and choose the best ones to break; some haven’t been anywhere near humans by the age of three. These animals are central to the traditional way of life in the south. It’s surprising how deep into the valleys the gauchos will take their cows or sheep to find grazing – you can’t do the work using a quad bike or chopper. All along the Andes , humans depend on horses.

Crossing the Andes on horseback is a mythic rite of passage because of its position in Argentina’s history. José de San Martín, the man who liberated much of South America , rode across the mountain range with thousands of soldiers in 1817. At the time such a military operation was considered impossible, but they did it and freed Chile from the Spanish, securing independence. One of my favourite books is Across Patagonia by Lady Florence Dixie, who travelled from the Atlantic to the Pacific by horse in the 1870s, eating llama-like guanaco and not much else. It was a no-man’s – or no-woman’s – land then and she was a true trailblazer.

But we’re still discovering Patagonia. There are these little corners, secret jewels among the peaks that you come across on rides. Cave paintings and fossils. That’s the magic of the place – it makes you feel as if you’re a pioneer even in the modern age.

Of course, there are challenges to living here. Winters are harsh. There are accidents – I fell and cracked my pelvis one year. We’ve had a couple of volcanic eruptions which covered our camps in ash; that wrote off a whole season.

However, lows are rare. Every moment in the Andes is a high, literally and figuratively. We explore most areas at walking pace, saving the gallops for the valleys. It’s that slow immersion in a landscape that reveals the most and allows our guests to soak up remarkable spots, such as one we call Paso de las Lágrimas, or Pass of Tears. Up there, people get emotional – because of the views, the vertigo, the adrenalin, the elements. It’s thrilling to be so elevated and exposed to the wind and rain. It sounds frightening but it’s stunning, too. One of the greatest joys is to see our riders’ faces after a trip, knowing they’ve had the time of their lives.

We tend to journey about 5,580ft above sea level, which is the tree line. It’s a powerful feeling when you head further up onto the shale and are beyond your comfort zone. You can’t stay there because of the altitude but it’s where the big views are, on the verge of life and death. It keeps the senses sharpened. You are on the edge, close to where condors fly.

This tour is based in a small inn, an authentic estancia (ranch) and a riverside camp. Rooms are offered on a private double occupancy basis at the estancia and inn and in double occupancy deluxe belle tents at the riverside camp.

In some cases, the accommodation listed below may need to be substituted for other comparable accommodations.

During your Patagonian adventure on horseback, you'll see areas way off the beaten track, riding from an authentic Estanciaand and admiring breathtaking scenery each step of the way. From traditional lamb barbecue complete with Pisco sours, to a cozy night in a quiet riverside camp – this horseback riding adventure in Chile is the complete Patagonia experience.

Itinerary for Chilean Patagonia on Horseback Tour

Transfer from puerto natales and ride to tercera barranca.

In the morning, you’ll set off by private transfer to Estancia Lazo, a 13,000 hectare (32,123 acres) cattle ranch founded over a century ago and still operating today beneath striking views of the Paine Massif on the shores of Laguna Verde. Here you’ll meet your horses that will be waiting to begin the ride to Tercera Barranca.

Once in the saddle, you’ll enjoy a 7-hour slow ride with trotting and cantering to a beautiful and quiet estancia where the group will rest for the evening.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Towers in the distance and opportunities to see the diverse Patagonia landscapes and local fauna including guanacos and ñandus.

Ride to Cascading Salto Las Chinas Waterfall

The destination today is the Salto Las Chinas waterfall on the east side of Torres del Paine National Park, a route taken more than a century ago by Lady Florence Dixie – and whose 1880 account of traveling Patagonia is still iconic today!

You’ll ride across pampas and plateaus and likely see condors matching your speed as they soar the skies above us. Later, stop for lunch at the waterfall before making your way back to the ranch via the same trail.

This evening will be spent beside the fire, with Pisco sours and a Patagonian lamb barbecue (BBQ confirmed with a min. of 8 guests).

Saddle Up for the Ride to Serrano River

Today’s ride winds through native beech forests and around small lagoons. Splendid views will continually follow the group – though you’ll find a particularly excellent picture-taking opportunity at today’s highest point, where you’ll observe how the Paine River fuses with the agua waters of Toro Lake, the largest in the region.

From here, you’ll start the descent towards your home away from home for the next two nights: The Riverside Campsite.

Rest peacefully in quiet deluxe lotus belle tents on the shores of the Serrano River beneath an impressive view of the formidable black granite peaks of Los Cuernos.

Ride to Grey Lake and Cruise to Grey Glacier

A morning ride across huge pampas and a suspension bridge over the Grey River takes the group to Grey Lake’s superb viewpoint. From here you’’ll see the numerous floating icebergs that have calved from Grey Glacier and been whittled into fantastic shapes by the sun and wind.

Enjoy lunch at this lookout point, then set off on a short hike through a beech forest and along the beach of the Grey Lake. While hiking, be sure to listen out for the woodpeckers and Austral parakeets that call this forest home! The 3 hour round-trip cruise along Grey Lake weaves around blue-hued icebergs and stops right in front of Grey Glacier’s massive facade. Here ,you’’ll stay for a while to take pictures, observe the glacier’s intricate colors and icy textures – and maybe even see ice chunks calving.

As you make our way back, watch out for the wind-sculpted “ice mushrooms” atop Paine Grande. Ashore once again, a transfer will take you back to Puerto Natales where the tour concludes.

After breakfast, we will walk from EcoCamp to Hotel Las Torres. Upon arrival at the ranch stables, we meet our local Baqueano (Patagonian cowboy) guide who introduces us to the fine selection of Patagonian horses we will be riding. Our horses have been raised in the area’s wild geographical surroundings but are very well-trained and used to being ridden by anyone - no previous riding experience is needed. As you ride along the deep blue shores of Lake Nordenskjöld, our expert baqueanos will help you learn how to ride. With the wind in your hair, the sounds of the lake, and the rhythm of the horse’s strong, sturdy movements, you’ll get a feel of Patagonia and its beginnings. Creating a genuine connection with nature, you’ll feel the powerfully pure joy of the moment. Mount Almirante Nieto and its hanging glacier will hover in the skyline and you’ll appreciate numerous viewpoints and Patagonian flora as you cross pristine rivers and dense forests on horseback. We will venture into the Asencio Valley and cross the Asencio River, where you’ll be able to appreciate an ecotone – the intersection of two distinct ecosystems. The forest and the pampas transition into one another, uniquely blending together in the middle. This famous lake is situated at the base of the Paine Massif and is named after Otto Nordenskjöld (1869-1928), a Swedish-Finnish explorer who dedicated himself to the study of Chile, Antarctica, Peru, and Greenland. During the ride, we will settle down to enjoy our picnic amid the spectacular Patagonian scenery and reflect on the generations of Baqueanos who have traveled across Patagonia’s plains before us. Our guide will expand on the region’s horse riding history and the geography of this fascinating area so close to the world’s end, with a wealth of stories passed down through generations. Figures such as Santiago Zamora who traveled from Central Chile down to Punta Arenas in 1868 and integrated with the European colonists, spending his life exploring the region alongside them on horseback, form part of the rich intercultural heritage of the region. We make our way back to the stables, soaking up the experience of riding across the Patagonian plains in traditional fashion. Once we say goodbye to our guide and horse we walk back to EcoCamp to enjoy our evening aperitif and meal and share our day’s experience with fellow EcoCamp guests.

What is an EcoCamp extension?

EcoCamp Extensions are excursions you can book in addition to our regular EcoCamp programs, to enhance your Patagonian experience. These tours can take place before or after your main program but we strongly recommend doing them afterward to maximize your arrival experience at EcoCamp with your fellow trekking/Safari group members. Transport in and out of the park is not included as these services are covered by your regular program with EcoCamp. If you wish to book an EcoCamp Extension without any other EcoCamp program please contact us so we can give you a quote.

Physical demands

This trip requires a level of fitness sufficient to spend a day riding on a horse over varied terrain. Speed will be determined by group fitness. No previous experience is necessary. Only available for passengers under 65 years old.

The vast unbroken stretch of ocean to the west and south of the South American continent leaves the Patagonian Andes very exposed to the saturated winds that circle the Antarctic landmass. Also, both the strong marine and the South Patagonic Ice field influence make the weather hard to predict. In spring or early summer, fine weather may deteriorate almost without warning, bringing rains and eventually snow. Even in summer (December to March) you should come prepared to find cold- strong winds (up to 130 km/hr) and rainfalls. The summer’s average temperature is 11ºC/52ºF (24ºC max, 2ºC min).

What you need to bring

You need to bring your personal belongings and box lunch provided by EcoCamp. It can get pretty chilly during the ride so warm clothes, gloves and hat suitable for strong winds are recommended.

We reserve the right to change the order of the days in any itinerary at the discretion of the trip guide and based on operational considerations. The trip guide can modify, change or eliminate part of the itinerary based on safety/weather considerations.

We are very happy to announce that there are currently no travel restrictions in Chile. Together with the above mentioned, it is mandatory to comply with the following requirements:

• You only have to present the vaccination certificate issued in your country when boarding to Chile. Those who do not have their vaccinations must present a negative result in a PCR test dated less than 48 hours from departure to enter Chile. Those who are under 18 years of age do not have any requirements to enter Chile
• A negative PCR upon arrival is not compulsory any more but diagnostic tests will be carried out randomly at the entry point to Chile. Confirmed cases shall be isolated according to the general health regulations.
• Medical insurance covering any expenses caused by COVID-19 is not compulsory any more
• The use of a face mask is voluntary

We want to tell you about Tierra del Fuego situed south of the Strait of Magellan opposite the city of Punta Arenas. This is a large island, with a surface of 47,992 km² (18,529.81 mi²), which has a population of 133,000, who consider themselves as “Fueguinos”, and not Patagones. The north of the island consists of plateaus and slightly undulating plains. The south is occupied by the southern end of the Andes mountain range, with many lakes, forests and mountains: the highest peak is Shipton which is 2,469 m above sea level. Spring is very windy, especially in the north of the island, in summer the wind is a lot gentler. There is a variety of wildlife, and the vast landscape is incredibly dramatic at the first light of day. There are many farming areas in the island, divided into “estancias” where thousands of lambs are bred. As a result, there are many tasks and occupations, mainly carried out by men, such as the puesteros (camp tenders), ovejeros (shepherds), alambradores (wire fencers), amansadores (horse tamers) and tropilleros (horse herders). All these occupations have something in common, solitude.

Our goal is to offer you the experience of the people that work in Tierra del Fuego, following with us the route of a horseman and tropillero.

The Route: This is a non-traditional service, exclusive to experienced riders of long journeys and harsh weather. To reach Tierra del Fuego we must stay at least one night in Punta Arenas. If the wind is stronger than 80 km/h (50 mph) the ports close which makes it impossible to cross the Strait of Magellan until the storm dies down. This can happen on the journey to and from the island. Departure is at 09.00 am on a ferry from Punta Arenas crossing the Strait of Magellan to the small city of Porvenir, the entrance to the Chilean Tierra del Fuego.

Diet Food is cooked over direct fire in the camps or shepherd posts. Although a lot of lamb is consumed in the area we also prepare beans, vegetables that can last the journey (onions, garlic, and carrots), nuts and we make our own bread. We also take chocolate, biscuits and wine. Anything you personally want or need to bring must not exceed 3 kg. Once the journey starts there will not be any shops or markets as we will travel through inhospitable places.

* We do not offer a special vegetarian or vegan service. It is important to bear in mind that meat is the main basis of the diet in the area, so we will frequently witness animal slaughter.

Experience only for riders

These specifications are for the safety and tranquillity of everyone involved in the expedition. The horses in Tierra del Fuego are raised in freedom, in large pampas with extreme weather. Even though they are tamed their nature remains wild.

We are continually taming young horses, and we select the horses we use for the journeys from these groups. The season for these trips lasts for 6 months (spring and summer). During the journey we take horses that are still in the process of being tamed because this is our first job and we want to share this with you. During the trip each person must saddle their horse and the guide in charge will check the final details. While you are with us you will be treated by the puesteros (camp tenders) or the workers of the estancias as any other guest and sheltered under the traditional conditions of the people of the area. We do not use tents, if the weather allows we sleep under the stars by a good fire or in one of the posts we visit.

Travel insurance and requirements

You must have a personal insurance that covers accidents, bearing in mind that although it is insured, the trip is an adventure. We will be responsible of you personally throughout the whole journey, taking in all necessary precautions by instructing you and the other riders, because this is a safety principal. During the trip we will count on the support of an evacuation vehicle in case of necessity. We have an assistance network in case of accidents, offered to us by the workers we will visit. To this day we have never needed to use this network and of course we hope we never do. It must be mentioned that some of the areas we will visit will not have access to telephone or internet signal. This is a journey that is not offered in mass media, so you will not find it in tourism websites or from tour operators, which is why we need to choose our guests carefully. We will send you a questionnaire so that both parties are in agreement and to avoid misunderstandings.

Duration: 9 Days

Price: USD 4,980

Day 1: We will be waiting for you in the city of Punta Arenas, the centre of the region, which is located on the shores of the Strait of Magellan where we will get to know each other and prepare for our departure the following morning.

Day 2: We will embark on the Patagon ferry at 09.00 am to cross the Strait of Magellan towards the small city of Porvenir. This boat ride will take 2 hours. We will arrive at Porvenir in time for lunch. After a small tour around the city and its museum, we will go to our starting point, Estancia Tres Hermanos. We will stay the night here and pick up our horses the following morning to start our first day’s riding.

Day 3: We have breakfast and leave very early, going into the Pampas towards the forests and heights of the Carmen Silva mountain range. This day’s ride will take 8 hours for us to reach our goal, the next resting place. This is a shepherd’s post that takes us back into a time bubble. We won’t have electricity or phone signal.

Day 4: After a substantial breakfast, we head south, crossing a small moor known as Monte Cazuela to then descend to the valley in Russfin, where we will spend our first night camping.

Day 5: After breakfast we will keep heading south towards Rio Grande, crossing it at a shallow point. It is then that we will be completely immersed in the depth of Tierra del Fuego, with the constant presence of condors, red foxes, beavers and river fishing.

Day 6: This will be the longest day of the expedition and we will test our physical and psychological capabilities. Our goal is the town of Pampa Guanaco, where there is a police (carabineros) check-point and a phone signal. Here we will count on the assistance of a vehicle so that, if you are overcome by fatigue, you will be able to get off your horse and carry on by motor vehicle. Third night camping.

Day 7: This day’s ride is relatively short. We leave Pampa Guanaco and head towards base camp to end the journey in Laguna del Carabinero, a shepherd’s post prepared for our rest. This is a place without comforts but surrounded by beauty, wild horses, guanacos, foxes, wild cattle, etc.

Day 8: This is a day of rest and you are free to go for a walk, to go fishing, take photos or simply rest.

Day 9: We will travel by car to Porvenir to board once more the ferry back to Punta Arenas and we will say our farewells hoping you enjoyed the journey and that in one way or another it has been an unforgettable experience.

It is vital to bring all the adequate equipment necessary for an expedition like this. Here are some suggestions:

• High factor sun cream.
• Avoid synthetic fibres and choose cotton clothing or other natural fibres for the first layers of clothing.
• Trousers must be preferably cotton and loose, the friction with the saddle may irritate/harm your skin.
• Due to the wind your outer layers must not be too baggy or loose so they do not move too much in the wind. The noise and movement make horses nervous.
• Scarf for your neck, hat to protect your head from the cold and the intensity of the sun, knife or pocketknife, UV protection sunglasses, flashlight, camera, sleeping bag.
• Comfortable shoes, not to wide so they fit into the stirrups.

Our intention is not to sell a classic tour because we would not like to treat you as a tourist and only show you things of beauty. Our aim is to show you a way of life that is disappearing, and that is linked to the life and equestrian culture of Tierra del Fuego.

We have years of experience but new challenges can always occur. Sometimes nature imposes its conditions and we must accept them. It is important for you to be flexible in your travel arrangements.
