Crusie Control Actuator and Throttle Cable Adjustment

  • Add to quote

Hi all, Before attempting to clean the throttle body of my 2000, I read in the Service Bulletin 01-004 (Throttle Body Cleaning), an instruction to adjust the cruise control and throttle cable after re-installing the throttle body. Would like to know the details before taking it apart. Does anyone has that instruction? Appreciate if you can share. It mentions page 4-55 of the 1998-01 Accord Service Manual for the cruise cable and page 11-32 for the throttle cable. Thanks!

how to remove cruise control cable from throttle body

Its a little hard to describe without seeing the diagrams in the service manual but I'll try. The throttle cable is supposed to have 3/8" to 1/2" deflection in the cable when you push the spring loaded throttle body linkage (where the cable attaches) to remove the clearance. The cruise control cable adjustment is supposed to provide 0.150" inches of movement of the linkage on the throttle body (where the cable attaches) before the engine speed starts to increase. The 0.150" is measured at the top where the cable attaches. You can pull on the cable by hand with the engine idling to check this adjustment. Both of the cables adjust by means of the nuts on the end of the cables. Good Luck

Thanks nehonda. It is easy as I removed the bracket that holds the cable, which is mounted on the engine. Also loosen the nuts at the bracket enables me to remove the cable around the "pulley" for both. No calibration required. The car is running much smoother after cleaning.

  • How can I remove the throttle cable? Can I ignore the torque seal and simply remove the nut off the stud? If so, do I need a special tool? My needle nose pliers seem to be too thick to stay within the ID of the nut as it threads off.
  • What removal technique do you recommend for the seized screw with the stripped head?

how to remove cruise control cable from throttle body

1. Sorry, I’ve never removed the cables, just moved the thottle body to the side when doing work. I think you should be able to find the instructions to disconnect them in the service manual? See sticky thread at top of second gen forum? 2. I think needle nose vise grips will work best for this after some penetrating oil. A pair of Vampliers would probably not fit in that space. Those are JIS screws, it’s something like the Vessel Megadora Impacta series of screwdrivers is made for, if the head wasn’t buggered up already.

cruise control cable retainer clip help!

how to remove cruise control cable from throttle body

  • Add to quote

My coupler where the cruise cable clips to the throttle body linkage broke the other day and I couldn't figure out how to take it apart to just replace it instead of the whole cruise cable. I was looking on ebay and found this but it says only fits 2000-04, my engine is a 99 4.3 vortec. the pic looks similar but not exact. whats the difference? http://www.ebay.com/itm/DORMAN-4104...es&fits=Model:S10&hash=item5af315a231&vxp=mtr

how to remove cruise control cable from throttle body

I would THINK it would fit. I know when I originally received my cruise control kit that the retainer was broken so I just used two small black zip ties to hold it in place until I could find one that wasn't broke.

how to remove cruise control cable from throttle body

Somewhere around 98 or 99 the size of the cruise cable pin on the throttle body shaft changed in size. Probably 99. It got smaller in size on the later models.

I would have never guessed that. I never noticed a difference between my 98's and 00's.

how to remove cruise control cable from throttle body

I have a 98 engine in my 2000 Jimmy. The cruise pin is different between the two. I used the 2000 upper intake to keep it original. I could have switched the cruise cable from the 98

I was thinking the pin could be different bc I ran into that before doing something else.

Hi Ladies and Gents, Just after a step by step process of removing the throttle body to give it a proper clean with throttle body/carby cleaner. I've done it on the car prior but have been told you do a better job with it removed. Any help or guide would be great. I presume there is a gasket you need to replace also? Is there anything, in particular, I need to be careful of when removing. Sensors and so on? Cheers!

Well-Known Member

You probably don't need to replace the gasket. Try some 3 bond upper engine cleaner first and spray it into the IAC. The IAC is the only thing you're cleaning the rest of the TB is pointless to clean.

I've reused my gasket a few of times. Just go slow and it shouldn't break. If it does Bursons or Repco will probably have one in stock.

Immortality

Can't live without smoky bacon.

That's certainly not true. This is not about performance gains but eliminating sticking throttle bodies and idle control issues which are common enough on older high mileage cars.

It should be fairly straightforward to get off, you even have more room than mine. If you're planning on doing much else later buy a Haines or Gregorys. Just don't buy a Max Ellery they are useless, IMHO. I bought one and it's useless for a VR owner. Use TB cleaner and a soft small paintbrush. I clean mine once in a while as it's been recommended by my old mechanic Malcolm in SA.

^^^^^ as immortalit y said ! Cleaning the Throttle Body lets the engine breath easier, and helps it idle better, and runs more efficient, Assuming it's a L36 Remove the Air Intake Hose, Disconnect the 2 Connectors [TPS & IAC], Carefull as they me be brittle due their location, Disconnect the Throttle Cable and Cruise Control Cable [if fitted], Remove the 3 x 10mm Nuts that hold the Throttle Cable Bracket on the side of the throttle body, Disconnect and Vac/Air Hoses that are connected [Remember where they go] Remove the 2 x 13mm nuts that hold the throttle body to the intake manifold, Leave the Gasket on the bolts, Remove the IAC Valve and place that aside, [get to that later] I have always used engine degreaser to clean mine, and for stubborn carbon, I have used steel wool to clean the inside bore and butterfly, and the IAC port, sometimes it may take a but of scrubbing, but take your time so you don't damage/scratch the internals. And it will come up perfectly. Hose it down with water, and blown the excess water off with Compressed Air, and should be fairly clean This is were you use the steel wool to clean the front of the IAC Valve, and lightly hose the degreaser off the end of the IAC, and wipe it down with a cloth [Don't Drown it with Water] After cleaning everything up, Refitting is the reverse of removal. The only problem I would see, is you will/may need to reset/relearn the Idle speed [being you had to disconnected the TPS] This should happen automatically after a couple of road tests.

I only ever clean anything in the throttle area if I’m looking for a problem, and then it is usually only the IAC valve and port. I leave throttle body cleans to dealership up-sells and feel-good DIYers. Other than looking nice it does nothing.

[/QUOTE] He does not mention idle problem or sticking throttle and lacks confidence. Why encourage potential for drama, brittle hoses, tear gasket etc.
