10 Top Tourist Places in Madhya Pradesh

mp travel places

Madhya Pradesh, in central India, draws visitors with well-preserved remnants of its compelling history. Its many abandoned cities provide an intriguing window to the past, so different from the congested India of today. In further contrast, the national parks of Madhya Pradesh offer some of India's best jungle lodges and wildlife spotting opportunities. Here are the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places.

Khajuraho Erotic Temples

The Khajuraho erotic temples are one of the top historical destinations in India . If you want proof that the Kama Sutra originated in India, Khajuraho is the place to visit. There are over 20 temples abounding in erotic sculptures. However, more than that, they show a celebration of love, life, and worship.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Shivang Mehta/Getty Images

Bandhavgarh and Kanha National Parks are among the top national parks in India . Bandhavgarh, while being relatively difficult to reach and costly to visit, is the best place to see tigers in the wild in India. The park features dense green valleys and rocky hill terrain, with an ancient fort. In addition to tigers, the park has a large array of wildlife including sloth bears, deer, leopards, jackals, and birds.

Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park has the honor of providing the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel, The Jungle Book . It’s rich in lush saal and bamboo forests, lakes, streams, and open grasslands. As well as tigers, the park abounds with barasingha (swamp deer) and an extensive variety of other animals and birds. Rather than offering one particular kind of animal, it provides an all-round nature experience. The park is well regarded for its research and conservation programs, and many endangered species have been saved there.

The great thing about Gwalior is that it's so accessible -- only two hours drive from Agra and the Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh. The main attraction the massive hilltop fort that towers over the city. Reputed to be one of the most invincible forts in India , its history stretches back over 1,000 years. Inside the fort walls are a number of palaces and temples, the highlight being the Man Mandir Palace. At the bottom of the fort is the Old Town of Gwalior, brimming with history and fine examples of Mughal architecture such as the Tomb of Tansen. The Tansen Music Festival is held at the tomb every December.

Orchha is located on the banks of the Betwa River, a comfortable hour and a half south of Gwalior. It's another relatively peaceful place, full of well-preserved palaces and temples, with a distinctly medieval charm. Three main palaces are enclosed in Orccha's fortified walls. The Jahangir Mahal is the largest and most impressive, and its upper levels offer some arresting panoramic views. A stay inside the Jahangir Mahal, at the Hotel Sheesh Mahal, completes the experience. Being a government-run hotel, it's not luxurious but it is full of character.

Madhya Pradesh's capital city, Bhopal, is perhaps best known for the tragic poisoning that occurred there in 1984 when a pesticide manufacturing plant leaked a mixture of deadly gases. The city has two main attractions -- mosques and museums. A particularly fascinating museum is the Tribal Museum, which showcases the tribes of the region and their lives. The Taj ul Masjid, Jama Masjid, and Moti Masjid are fine examples of the city's rich Islamic heritage. There are also two large lakes, the Upper Lake and Lower Lake, inside the city limits.

One of India's little-known UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Bhimbetka rock shelters, is situated about an hour from Bhopal inside Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary. There are more than ancient 700 rock shelters there, dating all the way back to the Paleolithic age. Many of them have paintings on the walls.

Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi Stupa, northeast of Bhopal, is one of India's oldest Buddhist monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by Emperor Ashoka in 262 BC after he embraced Buddhism and nonviolence, following his particularly horrific invasion of Kalinga (present-day Odisha). The complex is made up of a number of other stupas, temples, monasteries, pillars and relics. There's also an archeological museum. Sanchi can be visited on a day trip from Bhopal, but it's worth staying in the area as it's a convenient base for numerous other side trips.

Malwa Region Golden Triangle: Mandu, Ujjain, Omkareshwar

The Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh is situated in the southwest portion of the state), with Indore as the point of entry. Ujjain , Mandu and Omkareshwar popularly make up its "Golden Triangle". Ujjain is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities, and one of the four locations of the Kumbh Mela . Most importantly, it's home to the  Mahakaleshwar Temple , which has one of India’s 12 sacred Jyotirlingams

The abandoned city of Mandu was once the lavish home of the Mughals, who indulged themselves by its many lakes and palaces. Mandu's crumbling buildings, encircled by a long 45 kilometer (28 miles) stretch of wall with 12 gateways, still hint of its grandiose past.

Omkareshwar, an island in the Narmada river, is said to appear like the symbol “Om” when viewed from above. It's another of the 12 Jyotirlingam sites, and this, added to the presence of the Holy Narmada, draws generations of devout pilgrims. It's popular with travelers too, as a place to chill out.

Maheshwar, the Varanasi of central India, is a small holy town dedicated to Lord Shiva. Set along the banks of the Narmada river, it's said that only Shiva is worshiped where the Narmada flows, as he's the only god with the inner peace to calm her.

Satpura National Park

Will Gray/Getty Images

You're unlikely to see a tiger at lesser-known Satpura National Park but it's an excellent place to spend time in nature without the crowds. Notably, Satpura is one of only a few protected forests in India that visitors are allowed to walk through. The Duchess Falls Trail is challenging but you'll be rewarded with a refreshing dip in the waterfall at the end. Other possible activities inside the park include cycling, jeep safaris, night safaris, and canoe safaris.

Chhajjas are built-in north-south portion on the second storey. There is a courtyard in the center with rooms built on both sides. One of the lawns has the grave of Shahjehan's lover Moti Begum. Due to environmental factors, many portions of the palace had been badly damaged especially wall plaster and flooring. History has it that towards the south-west of Agra, in the slow-paced town of Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh, is located the original mausoleum of Mumtaz, the beloved wife of Shah Jahan. During the Deccan campaign, Shah Jahan had shifted base from Delhi to Burhanpur. He settled down at the Shahi Quila close to the Tapti River in Burhanpur sometime in the late 1620s. The Ahukhana was built in the 16th century as a deer park for Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The garden sprawled over six miles, with two main structures, a small palace adorned with traceries, and a pillared pavilion known as the baradari. On the north, there is a tank in which a raised platform was constructed. The area is enclosed by a compound wall and a big garden. As per the historians, on her deathbed, after giving birth to ...

Also known as Bhojeshwar Temple, it is one of the beautiful shrines located near Bhimbetka and among the popular places to visit as part of Bhopal Tour Packages. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Bhojeshwar Temple is an incomplete Hindu temple believed to have started in the 11th century CE, during the reign of the Paramara king Bhoja. mp travel places

At a distance of 11 km from Sanchi, Sonari is an archaeological site of an ancient monastic complex of Buddhist stupas in Madhya Pradesh. Positioned on a hill, it is one of the must include places in the Buddhist Circuit of Central India, and among the top places to visit near Sanchi. Like Sanchi, Sonari is again a complex of Buddhist stupas comprising two large and five smaller stupas. The stupas were excavated around 1850 by Alexander Cunningham, who discovered two boxes containing relics. One of the reliquaries, which is very ornate, is visible nowadays at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The date of construction of Stupa 1 and Stupa 2 must therefore be equivalent to those of Sanchi Stupa No.2, i.e. 125-100 BCE. About 15 meters in diameter, Stupa No.1 is a solid hemisphere of dry masonry and is the largest stupa in the complex. It is made over a cylindrical plinth of about four feet high with fragments indicating traces of railings. The stupa contained a miniature soapstone reliquary. Alexander Cunningham and FC Maisey searched Stupa No.2 in 1851. The stupa contained three miniature reliquaries, two in soapstone and one in rock crystal, as well as a certain amount of bone ash and a piece of wood. The main reliquary is shaped to resemble a lotus bud, with incised petals decorating the lower half of the reliquary. It was turned on a lathe and then carved in bas-relief. The reliquary of Stupa No.2 presents has inscriptions in Brahmi mentioning the ...

Top Attractions In Madhya Pradesh

Khajuraho is often said to be the most popular historical site in Madhya Pradesh tourism. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Khajuraho is home to groups of architecturally brilliant temples and a delight for history lovers and photographers. The temples are famous across the globe as examples of art and architecture and are visited by thousands of travellers. If you are planning to include a trip to Khajuraho in your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary, ensure that you keep aside at least two to three days.

The temples were built between 950 and 1050 AD by the rulers of the Chandela dynasty. Depicting most facets of life including spiritual teachings, erotic art, kinship and spiritual pursuit, the temples are designed with the Nagara style of architecture and promise a mesmerising experience. The geographical location of the temples puts them in three different groups – eastern, western and southern. It’s best to explore the temple complexes with the help of a guide since that will give you more information on the history of the temples and the architecture. The western group of temples sees more visitors owing to the presence of the largest temple in the complex – Kandariya Mahadeo Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the largest and tallest temple dates back to 1050 BC. It was built by Raja Dhandadeva. The most striking feature of the temple is the shikhara or spire that represents Mount Kailash. The temple has 646 statues along the boundary and the view of the temple from a distance is quite breathtaking. You will need at least an hour to explore the temple so ensure that you aren’t hurrying through your trip. Other temples that should be part of your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary are Dulhadev Temple, Lakshman Temple, Parsvanath Temple and Javari Temple.

There are numerous hotels, hostels and guesthouses in Khajuraho that offer a luxurious experience. In fact, the heartwarming hospitality of locals in the city is one of the biggest attractions for travellers exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. You can find a few of the best ones mentioned below in this Madhya Pradesh travel guide .

Sanchi is among the top destinations for travellers who want to explore Madhya Pradesh tourism and features in all Madhya Pradesh travel guides. Home to the Great Stupa that is one of the oldest Buddhist monuments in the country, Sanchi is a delight to explore if you are interested in history and architecture. The UNESCO World Heritage Site was built by Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. Besides the Great Stupa, Sanchi should be on your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary owing to numerous monasteries and other significant remains from the bygone era.

Sanchi Stupa is among the most-visited historical sites of  Madhya Pradesh tourism. The hemispherical dome of the stupa is 54 feet high and has an inner chamber. Visitors are not allowed to enter the stupa but you can pay your respects by walking in a clockwise direction around the structure. Buddhists from around the world visit this mesmerising structure. There are four gateways that face different directions and support striking carvings on the walls. The carvings depict the life of the Buddha, his incarnations and various significant life events.

It will take you around an hour to explore the stupa and we highly recommend exploring this world-famous site with the help of a guide. The best time to plan your trip to Sanchi is between November and March when the weather is comfortable for sightseeing. Sanchi is situated close to Bhopal so you can plan a short day trip or choose to stay for a couple of days depending on your interests.

Besides the Great Stupa, we recommend saving sufficient time for the Sanchi Museum, The Great Bowl, Ashoka Pillar and Udaygiri Caves.

Until recently Orchha was a hidden gem in Madhya Pradesh tourism and most Madhya Pradesh travel guides missed mentioning this beautiful place. The historical town is situated on the banks of the Betwa River and offers history lovers, photographers and artists an experience of a lifetime. Fondly referred to as the ‘City of Palaces’, Orchha takes you away from the hustle and bustle of cities into a world of art and beauty.

Orchha wasn’t always an obscure town. In fact, it was the erstwhile capital for the Bundelas dynasty – traces of which are still visible in the grand monuments spread across town. Orchha aptly translates to ‘a hidden place’ and you’ll know how well the name suits the town when you visit. You can expect a busy itinerary in Orchha when you are exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism so ensure that you stay here for at least two to three days.

Jehangir Mahal is a popular tourist attraction in Orchha. It was built as a garrison for the Mughals so they could establish greater control over the region. With typical Mughal architecture, the palace is a delight to explore. We recommend booking guided tours for all historical sites in Orchha as this is the only way to explore this beautiful town. The stories, legends and historical tales surrounding the many sites in Orchha are best told by locals.

You must also add rafting to your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary when exploring Orchha. Rafting in the Betwa River will give you the opportunity to tackle Grade 1 and Grade 2 rapids and will also offer you beautiful views of the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary. Rafting will take three to four hours so make sure that you begin your tour in the morning. It’s also recommended to book your rafting tour in advance or else you might have to wait an extra day.

Wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers must also make time for the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary. Situated around the Betwa River, this beautiful sanctuary should be a part of your itinerary when exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. Besides an enthralling safari, you can enjoy camping, canoeing and trekking here. As is with all places in Orchha, we recommend booking a guided tour for your visit to the sanctuary.

Enveloped in serenity and history, Ujjain is among the holiest cities in India. Every 12 years, the city comes alive as thousands of pilgrims come together for the Kumbh Mela. Situated along the Shipra River, Ujjain is home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and sees a steady stream of visitors throughout the year.

If you plan to add Ujjain to your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary, we suggest keeping aside two days. Ujjain is known as the ‘City of Temples’ so expect your itinerary to be dominated by temple tours. You must visit popular temples including Mahakaleshwar Temple, Harsiddhi Temple, Sri Radha Madan Mohan Temple and Chaubis Khamba Temple. The Shipra aarti that takes place at Ram Ghat is another unmissable activity in Ujjain as is a boating tour in the evening. The views of the sunset whilst boating in the river are awe-inspiring. There are many hotels, ashrams and guesthouses in Ujjain and depending on your budget, you can choose one for your stay.

History, grandeur and art come together to offer you a memorable vacation in Gwalior. A gem that is part of Madhya Pradesh tourism, Gwalior is among the most visited cities in the state. And rightly so. Gwalior Fort is the most significant historical site here with Jai Vilas Palace claiming the second spot. Gwalior also promises adventure and nature in equal measure. It’s best to hire a travel guide for the entire duration of your trip to Gwalior while exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism.

Gwalior Fort is often referred to as one of the most beautiful forts in India. Perched on a craggy mountain, the fort should be on the top of your list while exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. The fort includes temples, gardens and numerous smaller monuments inside and we suggest keeping aside three to four hours to explore the fort. The most striking part of the fort is Man Mandir Palace – also the site of the charming light and sound show that takes place every day. Man Mandir was built using blue ceramic tiles and is a gorgeous site till date. Teli-ka-Mandir is another sought-after attraction in the fort. Built in the 9th century, the Dravidian-style temple is a blend of South Indian and North Indian architectural sensibilities and you must pay a visit when exploring the fort.

Your visit to Gwalior will be incomplete without visiting Jai Vilas Palace. Built by the Maharaja of Gwalior, Jayaji Rao Scindia, it serves as the residence of the Maratha Scindia family as well as a museum that takes you back to the bygone era. With 35 rooms that have been converted to a museum, you can expect an informative and learning tour. Chitrangada Raje Art Gallery shouldn’t be missed when exploring the palace and neither should the Durbar Hall. Home to a hand-crafted carpet and intricately made chandeliers, the grand hall is larger than life and transports visitors back in time.

A few places in Gwalior that you can consider for your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary from this Madhya Pradesh travel guide are Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum, Tomb of Tansen, Saas Bahu Temple and Surya Mandir.

Activities And Things To Do In Madhya Pradesh

Visit national parks

Madhya Pradesh tourism is a treasure for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. If you are one of those people who can’t imagine a trip without an exciting jungle safari, then Madhya Pradesh is the perfect holiday destination for you. There are numerous national parks in the state and each is an important part of Madhya Pradesh tourism.

Bandhavgarh National Park is arguably the most popular national park of Madhya Pradesh tourism and a visit to the state is incomplete without reserving at least two days here. Bandhavgarh has the highest population of Royal Bengal tigers in the world which implies that you have a good chance of spotting a tiger. Besides the Bengal tiger, wildlife enthusiasts can hope to catch a glimpse of nilgais, wild boars, leopards, jungle cats, Asiatic jackals and striped hyenas. The jeep safaris in Bandhavgarh are extremely popular and it is suggested that you book your tour well in advance. If you wish to embark on an elephant safari, you must book your spot the moment you arrive because the safaris are in high demand. During the safari, you'll be accompanied by a naturalist and a tour guide. Elephant safaris take place only in the morning whereas jeep safaris are available in two shifts.

Panna National Park, Satpura National Park and Kanha National Park are other tiger reserves that should be a part of your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary. However, it’s important to plan your trip keeping in mind the monsoon season in Madhya Pradesh.

Go boating in Bhedaghat

What can be better than a boating tour amidst surreal natural beauty in a small serene town? Not too many things, we think. Bhedaghat is often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon of India’ and a boating experience here is a delight. A boating session can take between 45 minutes and an hour but you can extend this time period if you inform the tour guide beforehand. What makes a trip to Bhedaghat better is the gorgeous Dhuandhar Falls. The falls cascade from a height of 98 feet and the sight will surely take your breath away. This is also one of the biggest reasons that boating in the moonlight is a preferred activity among tourists who are exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. Boating is allowed only till 7:00 pm so ensure that you plan your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary accordingly.

The best time to plan your visit to this beautiful town according to this Madhya Pradesh  travel guide is between November and May. Summers here are not harsh and you can enjoy relaxed sightseeing trips till May-end. However, monsoon isn’t a great time to plan your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary if Bhedaghat is on your list. The area receives heavy rainfall and boating is closed during these months.

Summer Destinations in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is a year-round destination with idyllic sites and spots suited for every season. And when the summer sun gets a little overbearing, there are a few locations in the state that offer much-needed respite. Dotted with beautiful waterfalls, serene lakes, lush forest cover, staggering hill tops, vibrant wildlife, revered religious establishments and enveloped in local lore associated with the Pandavas and mystic poet Kabir - the sites of Pachmarhi, lesser-known Tamia and Amarkantak are three of the best places you can escape to this summer.

A nature-lover's paradise and an ideal getaway from the din and bustle of the city - the lush environs of Pachmarhi also offers the much-needed respite on a hot and sultry day. Perched at an elevation of about 1,067 m above sea level, it is nestled in the verdant valley of the Satpura range and caters to all kinds of travellers. Keeping the environs cool here are numerous waterfalls, including Rajat Prapat, or Silver Falls, touted to be one of the highest of its kind in India. When here, do not miss Bee Falls and Apsara Vihar Falls!

Of the many activities you can do and experiences you can create at Pachmarhi, witnessing a sunset from Dhoopgarh, the highest point in the Satpura Range (1,350 m), is a must. For those seeking adventure, there are a host of options. From ziplining, paragliding and rock climbing to ATV bike rides and cycling through verdant cover - there are no dearth of activities that will allow you to fully soak in the beauty of this stunning hill station. For more details on adventure options, you may contact/ visit the Satpura Adventure Club. You can also embark on the 150-year-old Forsyth trail trek. This trail was discovered by Captain James Forsyth that led to the discovery of the panoramic plateau called Pachmarhi.

If you are a history buff, drop by the Pandava Caves. Legend has it that the five (panch in Hindi) Pandava brothers (from the Hindu epic Mahabharata) had visited Pachmarhi during their exile and had carved five caves, which means marhi, for their shelter. These caves are a popular tourist attraction. Also popular among visitors here is the Jata Shankar cave. This stone-formed cave is so named as the rock formation resembles the mated dreadlocks of Lord Shiva (jata in Hindi means matted dreadlocks and Shankar is another name of the lord). Local lore claims that this is where the lord had hid to evade a demon named Bhasmasura. If you visit this cave, do not miss a peculiar rock formation at its end that appears as an open-hooded cobra. Locals revere it as Seshnag, the seat of Lord Vishnu.

Pachmarhi forms a part of the vast Satpura National Park and is also listed in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which makes it a haven for wildlife and nature enthusiasts too. Spot a host of flora and fauna, including tigers, elephants, leopards and the Indian bison, and fragrant blackberry plantations and thick clusters of bamboo. The Satpura Tiger Reserve is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Giant squirrel or Indian Giant Squirrel. In fact, the reserve's emblem features a Giant Squirrel. A few years ago, about 16 barasinghas were relocated to the  Satpura Tiger Reserve.

Along with natural beauty, Pachmarhi also exudes a quaint colonial charm. The Protestant Church of Christ, also known as the Christ Church, is one of the most stunning examples of British era architecture here. Built around 1875 by the British on Gothic lines, this church is a red sandstone structure, with the sanctum - sanctorum surmounted by a hemispherical, ribbed dome.

A picture postcard destination, Tamia is a lesser-known gem of MP. Offering astounding vistas of dense forests and mountains, Tamia is a great summer escape hill station. The terrain here is relatively unexplored and untouched as it was inaccessible for a long time, therefore, making it the ideal location to embark on new adventures and create first-of-its kind memories.

One of the most stunning views to take in here is that of the horseshoe-shaped Patalkot Valley and the surrounding dense forests. Spread over an area of 79 sq km, this valley is located about 20 km from Tamia. The Doodhi river flows in the valley. According to locals, the forests house certain medicinal plants and rocks that date back 2,500 million years! The valley is surrounded by hills and there are several pathways to reach the villages located inside the valley. The scenic landscape here offers ample opportunities for eco-tourism.

The valley is also home to a handful of tribal villages huddled next to each other. You can interact with members of the Bharia tribe here.

When here, keep an eye out for the old yet immaculately-maintained houses boasting British era architecture. Marvel at these quaint dwellings that are located at breathtaking spots and edges of cliffs! Those looking for a spot of adventure can embark on a short trek to the hilltop. However, it is advisable to take the help of a local guide. They will not only be able to tell you the best, and safe, route but will also regale you with local lore.

If you admire wildlife and do not mind an excursion, head to the famed Pench Tiger Reserve, approximately 100 km from Tamia. Do not miss the opportunity to spot such animal and bird species as chital, gaur (Indian Bison), leopard, small Indian civet, sambhar, chinkara, barking deer, porcupine and migratory birds like osprey, Malabar pied hornbill and Indian pitta.

A quintessential pilgrimage destination, Amarkantak is also popular as Teerthraj (the king of pilgrimages). Perched at an elevation of about 1,067 m above mean sea level on the Maikal mountain range, which links the Vindhyachal and Satpura mountain ranges, Amarkantak offers much-needed relief on humid days. Moreover, the forests surrounding the town boast a rich variety of plants with medicinal properties, making it extremely significant from an ecological point of view.

Although Amarkantak's popularity stems from its revered temple, there are numerous waterfalls that render it an ideal destination during summer. Do not miss the Kapil Dhara, which is associated with the legends of Saint Kapil or Kapila. Legend has it that the saint meditated here for 12 years. A popular one-km trek leads to another one - Dugdh Dhara. It is so named because the froth of the water appears like a stream of milk (dugdh in Hindi).

Devotees can head to the Narmada Udgam Temple. The main attraction of this temple complex is the sacred kund (waterbody). It is believed that River Narmada emanated from this kund. The 18th-century Narmada Temple, commissioned by the Bhonsle kings of Nagpur, houses a black stone idol of the river goddess. Every year, on the occasion of Narmada Jayanti, the idol is draped in brocade and worshipped by countless devotees. There are about 20 small temples in the premises of the Narmada Mandir.

Although incomplete but the Shri Yantra Mandir is worth a visit. Constructed as a 3D projection of the Sri Yantra or Sri Chakra, this massive sculpture's most striking features are the four heads at the entrance path representing the faces of goddess Laxmi, Saraswati, Kali and Bhuvaneshwari.

A short drive from the town is located a white-washed hut called Kabir Kothi, also known as Kabir Chabutra. Nestled on the edge of the deep, dark woods, it is believed to be the place where the poet had lived and attained enlightenment.
