So hard to pick one - everything was so good.   A few comments: Both Gabriel and Gonçalo were OUTSTANDING drivers. Very kind, competent, good conversationalists.  They were great guides as well as drivers. Gonçalo provided wonderful historical context of Portugal as a whole as well as Lisbon.  I learned so much from him - great teacher! The wine tour and lunch at Quinta de Chocapalha might be the best overall wine tour I have ever experienced - and I've been to many.  Monica gave a very detailed history of the property, the different sections of land and grapes, microclimates, terroir, and the facilities.  She had a great sense of humor as well as being knowledgeable.  Lunch with wine pairings was wonderful as Alice Tavares spent the entire time with us.  Love the wines and all the people. The boat ride through the Douro Valley was wonderful. Beautiful day, the captain of the boat was charming and personable.

We finally got back and settled. I would like to comment on several things that help with the highlights of our tours. You were the first step in making the trip exceptional. Working with you was one of most pleasant interactions that I have had in a long time. You were always calming to any change, question are modification to the trip. That started with making the trip wonderful. In today’s world, people have jobs and they just do the bare minimum.  You and your staff love what you do and it shows. The driver Fernando Ferreira was also exceptional.  He treated us with care and made sure that we enjoyed our tours. He knew the event better than we did and prepare for us for upcoming events. Furthermore, he always had cold water, which was pus for me because I drink a lot of water. He was also very knowledgeable of Porto, the wineries, Douro Valley., and Portugal. Maria Jose Moreira did a wonderful job with our walking disability. She managed to get my Husband to walk for three hours, which he has not done since his back surgery three years ago.  She also pointed out some wonderful places to buy local things from Porto. Highlights were the Hotels, the wineries, the meals, and working with your company. Quinta do Vallado Wine Hotel was beautiful to locate in the Douro valley with wonderful smell of fruits tree, herbs, and views. Perfect after long travel. The breakfast was fresh and accommodation was comfortable. Winery was great also. PortoBay Flores Hotel was a great pick in Porto, right in the heart of things, loved the location, comfortable, with wonderful breakfast. All the wineries were wonderful. They all made wine, but each one had such a unique characteristic. Six senses dinner at the chef table was special, great first night. Cooking workshop was wonderful. Doc was great. Decastro was wonderful, we got a chance to taste Portugal food, it was great, but there was no wine pairing. I would like to thank you for such a wonderful visit to your country.

Every aspect of the tour, from the meticulous planning to the warm hospitality, was executed flawlessly, making it a memorable journey through Portugal's rich wine culture. The standout feature of this tour was undoubtedly the exceptional attention to detail and kindness displayed by Wine Tourism in Portugal chosen drivers. From the moment we embarked on our adventure, they ensured every aspect of our experience was tailored to perfection. Their knowledge of the region, coupled with their passion for hospitality, elevated the tour to new heights.

One of the most memorable moments of the tour was undoubtedly our visit to Quinta das Carvalhas. The beauty of the estate, nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Portugal's wine country, was truly captivating. Under the guidance of Alvaro Martinho Lopes, we embarked on a journey through the vineyards, learning about the rich history and winemaking traditions that define Quinta das Carvalhas.

What truly set this tour apart was the level of customization offered by the company. From the initial planning stages to the execution of the itinerary, every detail was carefully crafted to meet our preferences and expectations. Whether it was arranging special tastings or accommodating specific dietary requirements, the team went above and beyond to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience.

We had the most beautiful holiday in Portugal. The wine tour of the beautiful Douro Valley was Five Star.

The hotels we stayed in were superb and we wished we could have spent more time relaxing in them. The Food was excellent, we had never been treated to such magnificent dishes.

The wine tours were very informative and we enjoyed the tastings too.

Our "driver" Joao Martins, was so much more than a driver! His knowledge and passion for the valley and Portugal were infectious and inspiring. He really made our tour so interesting, and easy and answered all our questions. Really needs far more than a 5-star rating!

Each wine estate had its own charm, but we enjoyed their guide Anna at Quinta do Crasto, and the lunch at Terraçus at Quinta Nova across the valley. The one thing we can say was not such a highlight was the boat trip. The views were magnificent.

All in all, we were really treated like Kings and Queens and highly commend your tour company.

Thank you for accommodating us, what with the Covid epidemic in between. Your professionalism, efficiency, and friendliness have been appreciated.

Thank you from all of us.

Kind Regards

Wine Tourism in Portugal has been a great partner for Fundação Eugénio de Almeida - Cartuxa, for the quality of care, the search for excellence of service, and to show to those who visit us the best that exists in Portugal.

The Best Portugal Winery Tours (2024 • Insider Guide)

Portugal – the land of great food, fine wine, and of course, the Pastéis de Nata.

It’s also one of the cheapest places to travel to in Europe and as result, it’s a popular summertime travel destination. There are some amazing beaches along the Algarve coastline that attract those seeking some much needed vitamin C as well as swimmers and surfers alike.

However, that’s not the focus of this article as we’re here to learn about Portuguese wine as well as wine tourism in the country. Portugal is one of the top 10 wine producing countries in the world, producing around 7.3 million hectoliters as of 2023.

Now, where do I fit into all of this? Over years of exploring Portugal, I’ve done some hard yards and have sorted through some of the best winery tours in Portugal that money can buy. The process has been streamlined for your convenience so that all you need to do is have a read through and get travelling.

All the tours that I’ve selected are run by knowledgeable locals who love nothing more than sharing their local wine offerings with you. I mean, who knows better than a local, right?

So, let’s dive in!

What is a Vineyard Tour?

Wine regions of portugal, the best portugal winery tours, final thoughts on portugal wine tours.

Before we get into the best of Portugal , its wine regions and the best Portugal winery tours for 2024, I’ll clarify what exactly a vineyard tour is. No, it’s not just a walk through the vineyards, although this will be part of many of the winery tours that you will come across.

A vineyard tour is essentially an excursion that takes you into the heart of a wine region and educates you about all there is to know. From the vineyards and grape varietals to the production, maturation, bottling, and everything in between.

You will be guided by the winery’s employees or if you’re lucky, the wine maker and even the owners of the estate. The day will, of course, entail wine tastings and drinking and usually a lunch or at least snacks depending on the tour length. Many tours include multiple wineries in a day so you can learn about individual producers and their unique take on wine.

Loire Wine Tour

A winery tour is also a great way to meet fellow wine enthusiasts as you traverse through the individual regions and learn all there is to know about them. They’re also highly beneficial for the owners of the wineries as they bring customers to their estates and ultimately generate sales. This mutually beneficial arrangement is welcomed by both parties involved!

Let’s now take a look at some of Portugal’s most well-known wine regions.

Our GREATEST Travel Secrets…

Portugal is blessed with a vast number of wine regions that are scattered throughout the country. Each has its own unique climate and topography and as a result, its own specialty.

You can rest assured knowing that wherever you decide to stay in Portugal , there will be a great winery not far away. The majority of the time, wineries are a little way out of the city but that’s where a vineyard tour comes in handy. You will be driven to and from the region so that you can enjoy the fruits of the wine maker’s labours.

Portugal, google maps

A quick side note – Portugal has three levels of wine quality classification that you will likely come across. They are DOC (DOP) or Denominação de Origem Controlada , Vinho Regional (IGP), and Vinho (wine) or “Table Wine”.

Right, it’s now onto the top Portuguese wine regions.

Everyone who visits Portugal travels to Lisbon , located bang in the middle of the Atlantic coastline of Portugal. The area is made up of several sub-regions such as Bucelas, Alenquer, and Colares and there’s a huge variation in climate and topography as well as a large variety of soil types.

Lisbon statue christ the king

The Bucelas DOC typically produces lighter-bodied white wines made predominantly from the Arinto grape. The Alenquer DOC on the other hand specializes in red wines with high tannin and concentration using Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Aragonês (Tempranillo), and Castelão. The Colares DOC produces more full-bodied white wines in a much more oxidative style. The Arruda DOC produces full-bodied red wines that are generally blended with other international varietals such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Madeira archipelago, located 600 miles (970 kilometres) southwest of Lisbon, is home to one of the most famous fortified wines in the world . All fortified wines produced in Madeira fall under the Madeira DOC, while the everyday table wines fall under Terras Madeirenses, a Vinho Regional (VR) title. Madeira is an incredibly remote region with an extremely humid environment, mountainous terrain and excellent hiking .

Madeira, Portugal

Tinta Negra Mole is the most dominant varietal planted in the region along with other common varietals including Malvasia, Verdelho, Bual, Sercial, and Folgasao. Wines from the region are also classified according to sweetness – “seco” or dry, “meio seco” or medium dry, “meio doce” or medium sweet, and “doce” or sweet. Madeira wines have various labels or titles that indicate how long they’ve been aged. “Reserve” denotes 5 years of ageing, “Special Reserve” denotes 10 years of ageing, “Extra Reserve” denotes 15 years of ageing, while the most expensive is “Vintage” which denotes 20 years of ageing.

Last but not least is the Algarve region, located in the far southwest corner of Portugal. The Algarve is one of the most popular places to stay in the entire country thanks to its beautiful beaches, which sometimes overshadow the region’s wine production. There are four DOCs in the Algarve, namely Lagoa, Lagos, Portimão, and Tavira that are responsible for the region’s wine production. The region has no shortage of sun and heat, and as a result, the wines can lack that prized acidity that contributes to freshness.

a girl standing on the edge of a cliff over looking a beach in portugal

The wines can come across as quite potent, usually with high alcohols. There is also a large variety of soils in the Algarve ranging from limestone-rich clay and sandstone to sandier soils and even mineral-rich schists closer to the coast. The main white varietals planted in the Algarve include Malvasia Fino, Maneudo, and Arinto, while the predominant red varietals include Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonês (Tempranillo), and Baga. These usually higher alcohol wines are a result of the warm maritime climate that is present in much of the region.

Vinho Verde (Minho)

Vinho Verde (Minho) is the northernmost wine region in Portugal that is most famously known for its light, crisp white wines. Vinho Verde translates to “ green wine ” in English, relating to the light and fresh nature of the wines, including the reds.

vinho verde vineyard wine tour portugal

The lighter-bodied white wines known as Branco Vinho Verde dominate the region and white varietal plantings make up around 70% of all vines planted. You can expect to find varietals such as Alvarinho, Azal, Loureiro, Arinto, and Trajadura. Crisp, tart reds known as Tinto Vinho Verde are produced in smaller quantities and are rarely found outside of Portugal. They are made from varietals such as Brancelho, Alvarelhão, Azal-Tinto, Borraçal, Espadeiro, Rabo-de-Ovelha, Padeiro-de-Basto, Vinhão, and Pedral.

Dão, located directly south of the Duoro Valley, is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Portugal . The wines are lighter in style when compared to the Duoro but carry more tannin and acidity. This is a result of higher altitude vines (between 150m and 450m above sea level) and rugged landscapes. Typical soil types include schist and granite which lend a certain minerality and freshness.

French wine

The most notable varietal planted in Dão is Touriga Nacional, the principal Port varietal in the country also used to produce full-bodied red wines along with Jaen. Dão Alfrocheiro is another one of the common wines that is found in the region and is a more medium-bodied red wine. There are also a couple of regional wines Terras de Lafões and Terras do Dão which are slightly more experimental. They blend indigenous varietals with international varietals such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay.

The Alentejo region is a massive area that covers almost a third of Portugal, located in the east of the country, boasting rolling hills, lots of sunlight, and hot temperatures. While the region is well known for its wheat production, it is also home to one of the world’s largest cork industries. The luxury of space means that there is also a huge variety of terroir along with its hot and dry conditions sans the cooling effect of the Atlantic Ocean.

Tinto Alentejo is a full-bodied red wine made predominantly from Aragonês (Tempranillo), Castelão, and Trincadeira, sometimes using Alicante Bouschet and Alfrocheiro. They are generally made as blends of the above varietals, but can also be found as single varietal wines.

Branco Alentejo are both full and medium-bodied white wines, made predominantly from Antão Vaz but also using Arinto, Fernão Pires, and Roupeiro. Alentejano (IGP/Vinho Regional) are wines made from any of the above varietals but may contain international varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, or Viognier.

Duoro Valley

And then we have the Duoro Valley, arguably the most well-known and picturesque Portuguese wine region – so much so that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site . Three subregions of the Duoro can all be found along the river. Namely, Duoro Superior, Cima Corgo, and Baixo Corgo. Each of them is unique in its expression of the continental climate that is found in the Duoro.

grape trees growing in Duoro Valley Portugal

The Duoro Valley is most famous for its red Port production, categorized into LBV Port, Tawny Port, and Vintage Port, with smaller quantities of white and pink Port. There are also lighter-bodied white wines (Tinto Branco) and full-bodied red wines (Tinto Duoro) produced in the region. Commonly planted Duoro grapes include Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão on the red side. And Viosinho, Gouveio, Rabigato, and Folgazão on the white side.

With such a vast array of wine regions, of course, there are a huge number of wineries in Portugal – in the region of 4700!

Now I know that’s a lot to sift through and try to decide on a handful to visit. But fear not. I’ve done some digging and managed to find some of the best winery tours in Portugal , for your convenience.

Let’s take a look at some of the best vineyard tour offerings below:

Duoro Valley Wine Tour

  • Porto Downtown/City Centre

Get ready for a full-day Duoro Valley vineyard tour, that starts with a drive through picturesque landscapes en route to the wineries. You will visit two local wineries and taste a total of six wines during your time there. You will also learn all about the production techniques that go into making Port and go for a walk through the vineyards.

winery tours portugal - duoro valley

It’s then on to the village of Pinhão for a traditional lunch at a local restaurant accompanied by wines from the region. The tour concludes with a leisurely boat cruise aboard a Rabelo, a local boat that is used to transport wine.

Vinho Verde Wine Tour

  • Porto, Braga, or Guimarães

Starting from where you’re staying in Porto , Braga, or Guimarães, you will be driven through the lush landscapes of the “green region” .

Vinho Verde Wine Tour

This Vinho Verde vineyard tour begins in Amarante, visiting memorials, castles, churches, and ruins, followed by some traditional regional cuisine. It’s then on to the first winery of the day to learn all about the production methods used to make the Vinho Verde, and of course, taste these deliciously fresh wines.

You will then head to the second winery of the day where you will taste more wines and learn to distinguish between different varietals. The tasting will be accompanied by some local products, too, to cap off a fun and informative day in the countryside.

Dão Wine Tour

The next vineyard visit is to an individual garagiste winery in the Dão region called Vinhos Carlos Raposo. You will learn all about the history of winemaking in the Dão region, the grape varietals used, the climate, and of course, the production techniques.

Dao Wine Tour - Portugal

The tour is conducted by the winery’s brand ambassador who doesn’t follow a set script, meaning every tour is unique. You will taste wines out of the barrel as well as recently bottled vintages which are accompanied by cheese and cured meats. It’s the perfect morning or afternoon tour for those who don’t have the luxury of time on their side.

Alentejo Wine Tour

Starting in Lisbon, you will learn about the wines from the Alentejo region as well as the region’s cork and olive industries. You will begin by exploring Évora, Alentejo’s regional capital and largest city. After discovering this UNESCO World Heritage Site , you will head off to a local winery to taste wines and have a locally-inspired lunch.

Alentejo Wine Tour Portugal

After lunch, you will head to a cork-producing farm to learn all about how that little wine bottle closure is made, from extraction to finished product. The final stop of this vineyards tour is at a local olive oil estate to learn all about the production. A tasting follows before heading back to the capital city.

Lisboa Wine Tour

This half-day wine tour is one of the best things to do in Lisbon . It combines wine tasting with an epic 4 x 4 tour and explores the town of Torres Vedras, known for its gastronomy and picturesque landscapes.

You will first visit one of the most famous mills in the area, along with its 200-year-old oven. You will then head to a local winery where you will learn all about their production and contemporary wine-making processes.

Lisbon Wine Tour

Then the fun begins – a 40-minute 4 x 4 tour through the estate learning all about the vineyards and grape varietals, followed by a wine tasting while soaking up the sun. It’s then on to a second winery visit to taste four more wines before heading back to the capital.

Madeira Wine Tour

Starting in the main place to stay in Madeira , Funchal, you will make your way through to the main wine region, Câmara de Lobos. You will stop off for an informative tasting, learning about how the famous fortified wine is made.

winery tours portugal - madeira

From there, it’s on to San Vicente to gaze upon the natural beauty, followed by lunch and wine pairings at a local house. After lunch, you will make your way to Porto Moniz to taste a few white, rosé, and red wines.

Finally, it’s back to Fuchal but not before one last surprise – one final winery visit to sample some of the finest wines from the region. You know what they say – always save the best for last.

Algarve Wine Tour

The last of the winery tours in Portugal takes us to the Algarve region for an express wine tasting at a family-run estate near Albufeira and Portimão. You will learn about the local production techniques in the region as well as taste the wines from Quinta dos Capinhas .

winery tours portugal - algarve

There are white, red, and rosé wines to taste, paired with some local tapas. The tour concludes with a leisurely stroll through the vineyards for a few photos which nicely allows you to take it all in (a lil tipsy).

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Right, although this is the end of the best Portugal winery tours for 2024, it’s actually the beginning. It’s now time for you to get cracking. Secure that flight and get yourself booked in on a Portuguese vineyard visit!

I hope that you’ve found this guide incredibly helpful and that you’ve learnt something about Portuguese wines and the regions in which they’re grown. Each region is unique in its own way and has its own speciality – it’s about deciding which one tickles your fancy the most.

Remember, there’s a lot of wine to be tasted in Portugal, it needs drinking properly, and it’s not going to drink itself!

Brief History of the Douro Valley Wine Region

The Douro Valley carries a rich historical legacy, its story woven into the steep terraced vineyards that line the riverbanks and the traditions upheld by its people. Its significance extends far beyond its geographical boundaries, with a history deeply rooted in viticulture and an enduring cultural heritage.

The Douro Valley’s viticultural history dates back over 2,000 years, with the Romans being the first to introduce organized grape cultivation in the region. But it was in the 17th century that the region truly gained international recognition, with the emergence of Port wine. This sweet, fortified wine became highly sought-after, particularly in England, transforming the Douro Valley into a vital economic region for Portugal .

The cultivation techniques used in the valley evolved over time to adapt to the challenging terrain. The steep slopes and rocky soil required innovative solutions, leading to the construction of stone-walled terraces known as “socalcos”. These terraces, still in use today, are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Douro winegrowers.

In 2001, the Douro Valley’s historical and cultural significance was recognized internationally when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site . This status acknowledges the valley’s unique landscape, which has been shaped by human activities, mainly viticulture, for centuries. The designation also attests to the region’s cultural wealth, including architectural monuments, archaeological sites, and intangible heritage such as folklore, festivals, and traditional practices.

Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site brings responsibilities along with the recognition. The valley is now subject to international standards of conservation to protect its cultural landscape. This means ensuring sustainable development, preserving traditional cultivation practices, and maintaining the balance between nature and human activities.

Winemaking in the Douro Valley

Viticulture is the lifeblood of the Douro Valley, its tradition and significance deeply embedded in the fabric of the region. It’s here, amid the dramatic, terraced landscape, where the art of winemaking not just flourishes, but thrives in its full glory.

At the heart of the region’s winemaking legacy is Port wine. Born from a unique combination of the Douro Valley’s terroir and centuries-old winemaking techniques, Port is a fortified wine, rich, sweet, and often enjoyed as a dessert wine. It gained prominence in the 17th century when England, amidst a political conflict with France, began importing this robust wine from Portugal. The Douro Valley’s vineyards were swiftly demarcated for the production of this now-famed wine, making it the world’s first officially designated wine region.

Port wine comes in several styles, the most common being Ruby and Tawny. Ruby Port is known for its rich, fruity flavors and deep red color, while Tawny Port, aged in wooden barrels, is characterized by its nutty flavors and amber hue. There’s also Vintage Port, considered the finest of all, made from the best grapes of a single exceptional year and aged in the bottle for many years.

Though renowned for Port, the Douro Valley is no one-trick pony. The region also produces outstanding red and white still wines. Reds are typically robust, with dense fruit flavors, while whites are often fresh and aromatic, showcasing the versatility of the region’s indigenous grape varieties.

As you traverse the Douro Valley, you’ll find an array of quintas (wine estates) open for visits and tastings. Some of the prominent ones include Quinta do Noval , known for its top-notch Vintage Ports; Quinta do Crasto , acclaimed for both its high-quality Ports and still wines; and Quinta de La Rosa , a family-run estate offering a diverse range of wines, including the increasingly popular Douro reds.

Gastronomy in the Douro

In the Douro Valley, the gastronomic experience is as integral to the region’s charm as its sweeping landscapes and esteemed wines. The local cuisine, much like its viticulture, is a testament to the region’s bounty and the local people’s culinary craft.

The gastronomy of the Douro Valley is deeply rooted in its land, utilizing the freshest local produce, meat, and fish. It’s a hearty cuisine, with robust flavors and generous portions that pair wonderfully with the region’s wines. Whether it’s the succulent meats, fresh river fish, or garden-grown vegetables, each dish tells a story of the region’s agricultural abundance and culinary traditions.

A gastronomic tour of the Douro Valley wouldn’t be complete without tasting some of its iconic dishes. Try the ‘Posta à Mirandesa’, a thick, juicy steak sourced from local cattle and grilled to perfection, or the ‘Bacalhau à Braga’, a codfish dish served with crispy potato matchsticks. For the adventurous palate, ‘Cabrito assado no forno’ or roast goat is a local delicacy often prepared for celebrations and special occasions. Don’t forget to finish your meal with a local sweet treat, like ‘Toucinho do céu’, a rich almond cake.

When it comes to dining, the Douro Valley offers a diverse range of options, from family-run taverns to luxurious wine estate restaurants. DOC (Cais da Folgosa, Estrada Nacional 222, 5110-214 Folgosa, Portugal: +351 254 858 123 ), located on the banks of the Douro River, offers gourmet cuisine with a contemporary twist, and their wine list is simply superb.

At the rustic Tasca da Quinta (R. do Marquês de Pombal 42 R/C, 5050-282 Peso da Régua, Portugal: +351 962 800 873 ), you’ll find traditional dishes that take you on a culinary journey through the region’s flavors.

What people love about wine tasting tours in portugal.

We started our vacation in Lisbon, with 4 days of guided tours with Pedro. He was wonderful - always on time, so courteous, and a wealth of information. It would be hard to find someone with more knowledge of the history of his country. He shared so much detail about each of the sites we visited, and was able to answer any questions. If you get a chance to book a tour with Pedro, do it. You won’t be disappointed!
All our guides were amazing that we had for our excursions and the customer service from Vania we received before and during our trip was exceptional. The hotels were always at great locations and on the boutique side, very close to everything and we felt very safe. We will definitely be using them again for future trips.
Brand new Mercedes coach, and our driver João took us safely & comfortably through tiny roads and the most beautiful places. He did a wonderful job explaining interesting facts, discussing many subjects, having jokes & great meals together. The hotels were very comfortable and the staff welcoming & professional. The food delicious on every stop; the pastries, coffee, beer, wine & atmosphere amazing.100% recommend this company and team. Thank you João & Sandro! Sandra & Patrick

"Guide Summer was terrific, humorous an knowledgable. Tour was overpriced for level of a couple of hotels (Portugal not expensive). Had to pay for farewell dinner, really. Not a very nice gesture. Could have pulled this off by myself and saved approximately $2,500. Boat trip needs to include Duro Valley for this price.

Wine Tours in Portugal: Discover the Finest Wines in the Country

Portuguese wines… that’s the topic longer and deeper than the Douro River because Portugal has been producing and drinking wine for thousand of years.

Soooo, pack your bags and get your glass ready for the best wine tours in Portugal and its greatest wine regions.

The best wine tours in Portugal

The best way to take you on these tours is to split Portugal up into their most known wine regions.

The country is carved up into many different wine regions, but I would like to introduce you to four of the most popular, which are:

  • Vinho Verde;
  • Douro Valley;
  • Lisbon; and

Vinho Verde region (Minho region)

The Vinho Verde region (or Minho region) is located in the far north of Portugal, to the west of the Douro region. This region is bordered by the Minho River and the Atlantic coast. Most of the Vinho Verde region is a tor near sea level and is the largest in land surface, approximately 34,000 hectares (84,015 acres).

What wines are best known in this region?

The Vinho Verde region has become renowned for producing top quality sparkling wines. The wines are released three to six months after harvest which makes them fresh, of vibrant quality and youthfully fruity. These are called green wines (hence the name “vinho verde” in Portuguese).

You should try the following varieties:

Branco Vinho Verde

Branco Vinho Verde (which actually means White Green Wine) is a light-bodied white wine which often has a slight spritz and fruity, lemonade-like flavours with notes of melon or gooseberry.

The most popular grape varieties are:

  • Loureiro; and

Rosado Vinho Verde

Rosado Vinho Verde (meaning Pink Green Wine) offers red berry flavours with a quenching acidity like lemonade. You can find them in the southern part of Minho.

The most common grapes are:

  • Espadeiro; and

Douro Valley region

The Douro Valley region is located in the north of Portugal and it extends from the city of Porto to the eastern border of Portugal. The Douro region is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage listed site. This is where the most famous Port wine was born.

What wines are the best known in the Douro Valley?

Port wines are fortified sweet wines, specifically called: Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port, Tawny Port and Vintage Port wines which are the best and made by blending “port grapes”.

The best Port wines are:

  • Touriga Nacional;
  • Touriga Franca;
  • Tinta Barrocca; and

White Port and Pink Port

Both white and pink Port wines are great to drink in light-alcohol summer cocktails.

Tinto Douro

Tinto Douro are traditionally full-bodied red wines.

Douro Branco

Douro Branco is a light-bodied white wine with very slight fruity flavours.

Key white wine varieties include:

  • Viosinho; and

Must-visit wineries in the Douro Valley

There are many wineries in Douro Valley but I selected the best ones for you for the best wine tours in Portugal. Each of them is unique and provides a different experience.

Graham’s Port

With the spectacular view of Porto’s historic city centre and the two-tier Bridge (Ponte Dom Luis I) that connects Oporto and Gaia cities, Graham’s Port cellar is a genuine experience for a wine tour in Portugal. Visiting the lodge is by reservation only and you can call or email them to make an appointment.

portugal wine tours

Real Companhia Velha

Also known as Royal Oporto Wine Company, Real Companhia Velha is the oldest Port wine producer in Portugal and probably offers the most original wine tasting tour in Portugal.

Go on a guided tour to the centennial cellar of Real Companhia Velha which begins with a video that shows you the process of making Port wine. The wine tour continues through the ageing warehouse to the Vintage Museum and ends with a tasting of Port wines.

The cellars are located at Rua Azevedo Magalhaes 314 ,  Vila Nova de Gaia (just over the Douro river from Porto) and you can contact them by phone or email for visiting hours.

Croft Port cellars are located a few minutes away from Gaia. You can taste there the Croft Pink which is the world’s first pink Port wine. But this cellar offers something more than only wine tasting. You can enjoy other experiences such blind tastings and chocolate pairings.

Mmmm delicious!

Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, you can  call or email them for an appointment to experience this amazing wine tour in Portugal.

Cálem Cellars

At Gaia waterfront Cálem Cellars is one of the most famous and most visited cellars for wine tours in Portugal. In this tour you can enjoy two wonders of the Portuguese culture: wine and a Fado concert that guarantees a  very pleasant evening.

Quinta do Crasto

Quinta do Crasto is located on the banks of Douro River between Régua and Pinhão. It is a family owned estate with beautiful views and an impressive restaurant. Here, you can do a tour of the winery with a boat cruise on the Douro river. Simply send an email with your reservation enquiry and they will treat you very well.

Quinta do Crasto Portugal

If you are staying in Porto , why not book a full-day guided tour through the Douro Valley with a traditional lunch in a vineyard, wine and Port wine tasting and a ride along the Douro River on a Rabelo boat? Lisbon region

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, the largest city and definitely the most charming city in the world in my opinion. It’s bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and it lies on the right-hand side of the River Tagus. The Lisbon wine region stretches mostly north of the city towards central Portugal.

What wines are the best known in the Lisbon region?

  • Alenquer: Concentrated red wines made with Castelao, Alfrocheiro and Touriga Nacional;
  • Bucelas: Light-bodied, citrus made with Arinto;
  • Arruda: Full-bodied red wines that usually includes international grape varieties like Syrah;
  • Colares: Full-bodied wines with golden colored made with Malvasia Fina (it’s difficult to find);
  • Obidos and Lourinha: Light-bodied aromatic white wines; and
  • Torres vedras: low-alcohol refreshing white wines.

Must-visit wineries in the Lisbon region

There are so many but here I’ve selected four which I suspect you will enjoy.

The AdegaMãe winery was born of an old passion to wine. The stunning property has an area of approximately 40 hectares (98 acres) devoted to vines and production capacity of 1.2 million litres (317,006 gallons) per year. Located at Ventosa, Torres Vedras which is just under an hour’s drive from Lisbon, you can schedule a tour of this winery by  calling or emailing them directly.

Staying in Lisbon and want someone to take you on a tour to AdegaMãe’s winery and cellar (with tastings and snacks, of course)? Click here for a great offer with a personal, friendly guide.

Quinta do Gradil

International award-winning wines are produced Quinta do Gradil which has a long, rich history and was once owned by the Marquis de Pombal of 1760. With a superb restaurant, you can enjoy spectacular wines on their relaxing wine tour in Portugal. Contact them directly by phone or email to arrange an appointment. They are located about an hour’s drive north of Lisbon in Cadaval.

Quinta do Gradil Portugal

Quinta do Sanguinhal

Quinta do Sanguinhal was established by Abel Pareira da Fonesca in 1926 and they welcome thousands of visitors every year. This vineyard is a little further north in Bombarral (about an hour’s drive from Lisbon). You will travel through 100 years of Portuguese wine making on this wine tour in Portugal. Email them directly to book your appointment.

Quinta dos Loridos

Quinta dos Loridos is situated in the heart of the Óbidos region located in Bombarral. This winery is also the stage for the largest oriental garden in Europe (Buddha Eden). They make superb wines and sparkling wines under the label called Bacalhôu. Wine tastings can be booked by making a reservation by email and are available from Monday to Friday.

Alentejo region

This region is always going to be close to my heart because I used to live there. The Alentejo region occupies more than one-third of Portugal’s mainland area and is definitely one of the most picturesque regions in Portugal where the sunshine is present almost all of the time. It’s located around 100 km (62 miles) from Lisbon airport.

What wines are best known in the Alentejo region?

  • Tinto Alentejo: Full-bodied red wines, for example: Trincadeira, Castelao, Alicante Bouschet;
  • Branco Alentejo: Light-bodied and full-bodied white wines (Arinto, Antao Vaz, Roupeiro); and
  • Alentejano (IGP/Vinho Regional): Full-bodied red and white wines from a larger encompassing region. May include non-indigenous grape varieties (Viognier and Syrah).

Must-visit wineries in the Alentejo region

Alentejo is the largest wine region of Portugal and it has many wonders to discover but here you can take a look at a few of the best wineries to visit.
