Kilmore Quay Shore Fishing

  • Coastal escapes
  • On the water

The huge, all tide slipway at Kilmore Quay can accommodate up to three simultaneous small boat launches and has greatly contributed to the expansion of small boat angling locally. The inshore boat fishing has built up a truly deserved reputation.

All the marks around the Saltee Islands, from the Barrels, Brandies and Bores to the Conningbeg Rock afford great opportunities for a multitude of species including blue shark.

Fishing from the piers will produce wrasse, flounder, mullet and bass. East of the marina is a rock formation known as St. Patrick’s Bridge, which can produce bass, sea trout and wrasse to specimen size. Forloin Point to the west also produces good shore fishing for the bass.

Fishing Wexford

FISHING NEARBY

In rosslare.

Fishing in Wexford is pure joy. Rosslare is a haven for all fishing enthusiasts, from shore angling to sea angling; there is something to suit everyone. The clean seas, sparkling rivers and wave-lashed deserted beaches and coves of the southeast give rise to some of Ireland’s best-tasting fish – bass, sea trout and salmon are among the county’s native species. At the same time, the mighty pike has challenged even the most experienced fisherman.

Whether you are a seasoned angler looking for a day’s guidance or someone interested in either learning the craft of saltwater fly or lure fishing or simply learning or improving your shore angling skills, why not give him a call. Should you require equipment such as saltwater fly rods, reels or lines and even protective clothing or waders, South East Angling can provide all of them. Indeed why not enquire about one of SEAI’s training programmes in saltwater fly or lure fishing techniques.

The fishing season runs from May 1st to October 16th, with the prime time for sea bass during July, August and September. Jim in South East Angling Ireland is a fully licensed and insured professional guide with years of angling and guiding experience along the coastline of South-Eastern Ireland.

Guest Blog: Elaine Walsh on Fishing in South Wexford

Header image: © Elaine Walsh

Visit Wexford has welcomed a series of guest blogs over the past few months featuring members of the tourism and hospitality industry in Wexford, bloggers, photographers and those who promote our county so beautifully. It’s a series that allows our writers every opportunity to share insider knowledge on an array of areas.

So far, we’ve welcomed Michael and Leona Hennessy of ‘The Struggle is Wheel to talk accessibility in County Wexford, while Billy Byrne, Wexford County Council’s Tourism Development Officer, talks all things sun, sea and sand on our beautiful beaches in the sunny south east. Catch up here:

Michael & Leona Hennessy on Accessibility in Wexford

Billy Byrne on the Beaches in Wexford

This next segment of the series welcomes Wexford Trails Development Officer Elaine Walsh to speak to us about her fond memories growing up fishing where she came from in South Wexford, the opportunities Wexford has as a fishing front, a few of South Wexford’s countless hardworking anglers from across the south east and some key points for our visitors looking to visit Wexford’s anglers.

Our #TravelTuesday Tip: At Visit Wexford, we always recommend planning well in advance to ensure your trip gets off to a flying start. Contact one of the local anglers and get going across the waters for a day of fun at sea. A packed picnic might be the perfect solution to keeping those tummy grumbles at bay but rest assured, Wexford’s food scene will have you covered and you can check our food establishments in Wexford >here< .

Sea Angling Kilmore Enterprise

One of my earliest memories of spending time with my dad is going fishing with him. Usually at our local beach, Ballyteige Burrow in Kilmore Quay.  With over 250Km of coastline, we are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to great onshore and offshore angling in all of County Wexford. From Kilmichael Point in the north right around the coast to Ballyhack in the west, there is a wide variety of terrain that is home to numerous species, not to mention the ever-changing conditions that are bound to challenge any angler.  Typically caught around this coastal area at various times throughout the year are bass, wrasse, pollack, cod, ling, gurnard, flounder, turbot, conger, skate, ray, smoothound, shark (porbeagle and blue shark being the most commonly caught) and tope.

Heading out to sea on a fishing trip is a great way to spend a day getting away from it all – either a family day out or with a bunch of friends.  Kilmore Quay is a centre of excellence for angling in Ireland. Here you will find one of the largest fleets of charter boats in the country, with the most experienced skippers, that will take you to some of the best sites in Irish Waters. Whether you are a complete novice and just want to try out angling or a seasoned pro, the skipper will look after you. Equipment is available to rent, so you don’t need to worry about bringing your own gear.

The best part of fishing from Kilmore Quay is how close the fishing grounds are – within thirty minutes of leaving the harbour, you could be landing your first catch of the day. Further out shark and tope can be found. Trips to target specific species can be specially arranged with the charter boat. Before you head off grab breakfast at one of the local cafés or a freshly made sandwich to bring with you for lunch, Cocoas Café & Kitchen is open from 8:00am – no excuses not to fuel up for the day ahead!  The charter boats available in Kilmore Quay are Autumn Dream – Eamonn Hayes, Celtic Lady II – John Devereux, Enterprise – Dick Hayes, Karen Ann – Walter Rankin, Inisfree – Billy Bates, Lady Alison – Paul Bates and Mo Chara – Nick Furlong.  Charters are also available from Duncannon with Walter Foley. More details like contact information can be found >here<

Bring your own Boat

There are several locations around the county to launch a boat from, including the Blue Flag Marinas at Kilmore Quay and New Ross as well as Wexford Harbour (which also have boat trailer parking). Full details of all bye-laws can be found here: Marinas, Harbours and Piers | Wexford County Council (wexfordcoco.ie). Launching from these slipways does incur a launching fee payable on the day. Tides and conditions can be tricky in the sea off this corner of Ireland, so check locally before setting off.

Shore Angling

The east coast of Wexford is renowned for shore angling, hosting the IFSA World Shore Angling Championships in 2016 with more international competitions due to take place here in the coming year.  In the summer months, the beaches packed by day are not ideal for fishing, but night fishing can bring bountiful spoils. When the surf is running there is always a good chance of a bass, particularly in Autumn. Smoothhound, flounder, whiting, dabs, and spurdog are all likely catch. And, there’s nothing quite like spinning for mackerel on a fine summer’s evening.

Bait – An essential part of any fishing trip!

Well worth a visit is Murphy’s tackle shop, a traditional shop on North Main St in Wexford. This family-run business has been providing angler’s with helpful advice and friendly service for many years. The fully stocked shop can provide all that you need for any fishing trip.

Local knowledge is essential when arriving in a new area. The Wigeons Rest in Rosslare is a great source of local information and tips for the best spots along the shore, as well as selling bait to suit the type of fish that are going at any given time, Colm’s shop stocks a wide variety of tackle suitable for beginners to the professional.

 Key Points for Visiting Anglers

  • A state licence is not required for sea fishing – unless fishing for sea trout. A licence is required to fish seat trout and regulations apply.
  • Anglers should obtain permission from landowners to enter or cross private land as right of way is not implied.
  • Under 16s must wear a lifejacket on a charter boat. All adults onboard must have access to a lifejacket.  Lifejackets must be always worn on all small boats at sea.
  • a bass under 40cm
  • more than 2 bass in 24hrs

A Guide To Fethard-on-Sea In Wexford: Things To Do, Food, Pubs + Hotels

Fethard-on-Sea is the perfect base to explore the stunning Hook Peninsula .

A quaint little spot in County Wexford , it has a population of just over 300, but numbers swell during the busy summer months.

Below, you’ll discover everything from things to do in Fethard-on-Sea to where to eat, sleep and drink. Dive on in!

Some quick need-to-knows about Fethard-on-Sea

Fethard-on-Sea

Although a visit to Fethard-on-Sea is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Fethard-on-Sea is located on the wild Hook Peninsula – a dramatic landscape that offers an incredible coastline, bays and white sandy beaches. It’s a 30-minute drive from New Ross and a 40-minute drive from both Wexford Town and Kilmore Quay .

2. An often overlooked staycation destination

While County Wexford doesn’t lack for tourists, the Hook Head Peninsula is often overlooked, meaning that those lucky enough to spend a few nights here can enjoy the tranquillity of the area and its incredible beaches.

3. The Ring of Hook

Fethard-on-Sea is part of the Ring of Hook , an hour-long coastal drive that allows you to take in the jaw-dropping coastal scenery and some of the country’s most important built heritage.

About Fethard-on-Sea

things to do in Fethard-on-Sea

Fethard-on-Sea has a population of just over 300 and its main industries are fishing and tourism. The village’s known history dates from the 12th century when the Normans invaded Ireland.

Baginbun near Fethard was where the Normans landed, and the remains of Norman fortifications can be seen at Baginbun Bay .

James I granted Fethard a charter in the 17th century and it then became a municipal borough. A harbour was built in 1798, which was where French troops landed during the revolutionary wars.

Fethard became Fethard-on-Sea in 1914 after a lifeboat capsized off its coast and nine of its crew were lost. Sympathy and donations from around the world poured in, some of which ended up being misdirected to Fethard in County Tipperary.

In 1957, the Fethard Boycott came about when Catholic villagers boycotted Protestant-owned local businesses in response to Sheila Cloney’s actions – a Protestant woman who left her husband and took her children with her to avoid being forced to send them to the local Catholic school.

The boycott received national and international attention and a film, A Love Divided, was made about the case in 1999.

Things to do in Fethard-on-Sea (and nearby)

There’s a handful of things to do in Fethard-on-Sea and there’s  endless  places to visit a short spin away, which make it a great base to explore from.

Below, you’ll find everything from historical sites and walks to beaches, coves and plenty more.

1. Fethard Castle

fethard castle

The large stone castle was built in the 14th and 15th centuries, probably by the Bishop of Ferns as a summer residence. The oldest part of the castle is a gatehouse on the eastern side of the building.

During the latter part of the Middle Ages, several bishops resided at Fethard to avoid being attacked by the native Irish in north Wexford. The castle became the property of the Loftus family in the 17th century.

2. Beaches galore

Baginbun Beach Wexford

Photos with thanks to @skogswex

The Hook Peninsula is home to some of the best beaches in Wexford and you’ll find many a short spin away from the town.

Nearby Baginbun Beach is the most popular with visitors and locals alike, but the nearest to Fethard is Grange Beach.

On the other side of the peninsula, you’ll find the brilliant Dollar Bay , Booley Bay and Duncannon Beach , each of which is worth the short drive.

Tintern Abbey

Photos via Shutterstock

One of the more popular things to do in Fethard-on-Sea is to head off on the Ring of Hook Drive . Now, although this only takes a hour when driven straight, allow  at least  1/2 a day.

On the way, you will see Tintern Abbey and Collclough Walled Garden, the Saltmills Village, Fethard Castle, The Windmill, Loftus Hall , Hook Lighthouse, Limekiln, Dollar Bay, Duncannon Fort and plenty more.

4. Hook Lighthouse

hook lighthouse

Hook Lighthouse is the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. It was purpose built by the knight, William Marshall, and inside you will step back in time on a guided tour that explains life in Medieval Ireland and what it was like to be a lighthouse keeper.

As you might expect, there are some spectacular views from the balcony where you can see the sea for miles around and there’s a visitor centre with a gift shop and exhibits.

5. Loftus Hall

loftus hall

Loftus Hall is a large mansion house on the Hook peninsula. The Redmond family built the hall in the 14th century to replace the castle. It remained in the hands of the Redmond family until the 1650s, when it was given to the Loftus family as part of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.

The building that exists today was heavily renovated by the Marquis of Ely in the late 19th century. The building was sold in 2021 and it can now only be admired from afar.

6. Duncannon Fort (and beach)

Duncannon Fort

Duncannon Fort is a bastioned fortress positioned on the side of the Hook Peninsula. The historic structure has been around for 450 years and is the best vantage point to take in the beautiful Waterford Estuary.

The tricky thing here is the opening times – Duncannon Fort can only be accessed between July and August each year, so it’s worth booking a ticket when the portal opens.

7. Tintern Abbey

tintern abbey walks

Founded by William Marshall (him again!) for the Cistercian order, the monks lived and worked at Tintern Abbey for centuries. After the dissolution of the religious houses, the Colclough family took over possession of the abbey.

Now, although the abbey is well worth exploring, the surrounding area is home to the brilliant Tintern Trails – some of our favourite walks in Wexford .

They vary in length but the beauty of them is that they tend to be very quiet outside of the busier summer months.

Fishermen see fun weekend of bluefish blitzes and sea bass limits at Jersey Shore

sea fishing trips wexford

Fishermen took away quite a few fish this weekend from the sea bass trips to the bluefish run on the beaches.

Friday was opening day of sea bass season and as expected the inshore structures were plump with fish. The for-hire captains boasted of a lot of limit catches made by their anglers. The Farms was one of the productive areas but just about any rock under 120 feet of water has sea bass on it.

Capt. William Egerter Jr. on the Dauntless party boat sounded very pleased with what he saw. Egerter had been observing the sea bass for a couple weeks as he ling fished, but finally given the green light to keep them, his fares filled their coolers right out of the gate. The ling and codfish were also biting, which means his anglers will be busy sautéing a lot of fish.

Clams and squid hook baits will catch the sea bass but so will jigs and teasers. Capt. Bobby Quinn on the Ocean Explorer said he had anglers who preferred to catch them that way. He too, saw plenty of variety in between the steady sea bass action. He reported catches of ling, whiting and winter flounder.

Fishermen plucked away at fluke. It sounded like it was always the best of drifting conditions in the bays. Capt. Hal Hagaman of the Sea Tiger II out of Atlantic Highlands said he had wind against the tide or absolutely nothing at times, which forced him to do quite a bit of power drifting in the Sandy Hook Bay. When he did get a breeze it made for a little easier fishing. Overall he had at least a half-dozen anglers walk off the boat with limit and a several more with at least one or two keepers, over the four half-day trips he made this weekend.

Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park had a few anglers bring in fluke to be weighed that were caught in the surf. A pair of them were over four pounds. Gulp and teasers will get these surf fish on the hook, as will baits.

The ocean county surf is giving up all sorts of fish. The bass is nothing new and continue to bite but there were several drum caught not too mention some furious bluefish action. Bob and Sue Misak of Lacey went down to Long Beach Island on Friday afternoon and battled the bluefish until their arms were tired. They were fishing the north end of the island on the incoming tide.

Bob said the bluefish one after the other on bunker baits. The fish tore up their fishing line a bit so they'll be re-spooling before the next time out.
