SIARGAO ISLAND TRAVEL TIPS

Before you set off to Siargao Island, below are some handy travel tips to know before you go.

HOW TO GET TO SIARGAO ISLAND?

The easiest and best way to get to Siargao Island is by plane.

Domestic flights to Siargao from Manila or Cebu are available daily and they arrive at Siargao’s only airport in Del Carmen.

From the airport in Del Carmen to the main tourist hub on the island, General Luna, it’s approximately a 1-hour drive and the cost of the shuttle is around 500 pesos.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SIARGAO?

Siargao Island is a year-round destination although the peak tourist season is in the dry season which is between March and October.

The off-peak season is during the wet season which is generally between November and February. This is when there are likely to be fewer tourists.

For surfers visiting Siargao Island, the best months for surfing are during the swell season which is August through to November.

HOW TO GET AROUND THE ISLAND?

The best way to get around the island is on a scooter. The cost for a scooter rental is around 300-400 pesos per day, or for a monthly rental, you’ll get a cheaper rate of 200-300 pesos per day.

Most accommodations will be more than happy to help you organize a scooter rental for the time you plan to spend on Siargao Island.

Petrol can be found on the side of the road out the front of small local houses/businesses in the majority of the main villages in Siargao. Petrol is sold in 1-liter glass bottles for 60 pesos per bottle.

First of all…thanks for all the information on your site…very helpfull!

In 2020 we planned our second trip to the Philippines…Siargao, Bohol and Cebu! But, like everybody…we had to cancel everything!

Now, we’re planning again for April 2023!

But, we have some serious doubts…how is the situation at the moment? We love the article above…it was all in our planning in 2020. But what has survived the horrible thyhoon? Is it wotyh visiting all these places, do they still excist?

Have you been to Siargao recently, after the typhoon?

Thanks for all the information!

Kind regards from Belgium! Chris

Hi Chris, I have not been to Siargao since 2019 so I am unsure of the aftermath of the typhoon. I would suggest reaching out to some local Siargao pages on facebook and Instagram to get an inside scoop. Sorry I cannot be of any further help. I hope you have a great Siargao tour!

Coron is a shanty town with significant poverty in evidence. the water was nit as clear as "advertised" and I did not see nay good coral or fish> I toured Coron Island on the best boat - Cinca Ninos - good boat - excellent food but the experience was otherwise ordinary. Barracuda Lake and Kananga Lake were particularly disapppointing. The Hotel - Corto del mar - was OK - food was good but eating out was a rather disappointing experience. I would not do this trip again Read more Written May 18, 2024

The guide wS also very passionate and knowledgeable about the fireflies and their habitat, the mangrove. He also assisted us with using our iPhone cameras without flash. Just be prepared for bugs, so put on bug spray before you get on the boat. This is very popular so we waited almost half an hour before it was our turn to get on our own boat. Saw so many fireflies! They were all pebble beaches with sharp coral and stones so they give you the chance to rent water shoes before you go which I highly recommend. There was snorkel equipment which we used to see some lovely fish , the coral is mostly dead tho. It was a pleasant day out, we booked at our hotel, Marion Roos, and they sorted everything, it was a reasonable price and nice to get away from the beach where we were staying for a day. Actually visited in March 2019 just prior to their update/refurb but we found it just perfect as it was. My husband and I enjoy spending a couple of weeks travelling around and then a final week enjoying luxury and that is exactly what we did at Club Tara. The staff were informative, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. They were super friendly and treated us like friends whilst still maintaining a professional approach. The wildlife surrounding this lagoon is AMAZING!! We saw flying lemurs, huge fruit bats, a myriad of bird species, lizards and so much more. We truly were in our element. The accommodation was simple but beautiful and extremely clean. There was a jacuzzi at the front of the villa with stunning views over the lagoon. Club Tara was an amazing experience and we ended our trip to the Philippines knowing that we would return. Wonderful place with beautiful people. Thankyou club Tara. Read more Written April 19, 2024

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May.

Businesses increasingly have chosen to stay open on the holiday, leading to what is now one of the biggest retail sales and travel weekends of the year.

Here’s what is open and closed this year on Memorial Day:

GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS

Government offices, post offices, courts and schools are closed.

Memorial Day Weekend

  • The history: 5 things to know about the holiday , including its evolution and controversies
  • Travel: Crowds and high prices met travelers on the busiest day of the holiday weekend
  • On the menu: Try this recipe for smoky chicken wings or for something lighter, update these classic side dishes
  • What’s open? Check this list of stores and more before you head out
  • Now playing: Here are the movies coming to the box office this weekend and beyond

BANKS AND STOCK MARKET

U.S. stock markets and banks are closed Monday.

Most FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will also not be available on Memorial Day.

Warehouse membership club Costco said it would close on Memorial Day , but the vast majority of retailers will be open, with many trying to lure customers with big promotional sales. Hours may vary by location.

Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial opening of the summer travel season. Auto club AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the holiday travel period, an increase of 4% from last year. If those projections are accurate, that would come close to 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day weekend travelers.

AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over the weekend — the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking it in 2000 — and that another 3.5 million people will travel by air.

Siargao Tour: 4 Days 3 Nights Sample Itinerary

siargao tours package

Since the pandemic hit the country, we stopped offering one of the most requested packages on Siargao Island Hopping: the 4 days 3 nights (4D 3N) package. The reason is that a lot of changes in Siargao’s local tourism policies affected the group of destinations we used to package together.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Siargao by creating your own itinerary. Here’s a sample itinerary you can follow. Feel free to mix and match, or customize to your liking. On a ‘chill scale’ of 1-5, 5 being the most chill – we’d rate this as 4.

  • Arrival at Siargao Island. Most guests stay in General Luna, the center of activities like island hopping and where most restaurants and bars are.
  • Hotel check-in
  • Soak in the island vibe. No rush in doing any major activity. Just explore the area, try a couple of restaurants or have snacks and drinks while watching the sunset.
  • Try surfing in Cloud 9, especially early in the morning
  • Island hopping tour. You can book our “tri-island tour” where you can explore the surrounding islands and beaches namely, Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island.
  • Visit the Magpupungko Rock Pools and Sugba Lagoon.
  • Dinner at Bravo beach resort
  • Free time for shopping or any other activities of your choice. You can bike around and stop by the stores to buy some souvenirs. There are also activites like yoga, shooting range, boxing. And of course, who says you can’t surf one more time before leaving Siargao, right?
  • Departure from Siargao Island.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

siargao tours package

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

siargao tours package

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

siargao tours package

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

siargao tours package

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
