The show, which premiered in 2022, was met with high critical acclaim from the beginning and continues to find fans with each new season - an impressive feat in a time when so many shows get lost in the streaming shuffle. Now renewed for a third season right after its Season 2 finale, here's everything we know so far about the next chapter in the epic space adventure.

With Season 2's finale leaving fans wanting more, it's only natural to be itching for Season 3 to come as soon as possible. While episodes are expected to return in 2024, the production window is from December 2023 to June 2024 for Season 3 , so we may have to wait a bit before we get the answers we're craving .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series.

While Strange New Worlds premiered its first two episodes on CBS in 2022, all episodes are now streaming on Paramount+. It can be assumed that the third season of the show will also premiere on the CBS-affiliated streaming service. Subscriptions to Paramount+ are available in two tiers: Paramount+ Essential (with commercials, $5.99/month) and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME (commercial-free, $11.99/month).

Because production on the third season has yet to begin, there won't be a trailer out for some time.

Leading the charge is fan-favorite Captain Pike , played by Anson Mount. Mount is no stranger to the Star Trek world, as he also appeared in Star Trek: Discovery in 2019. His other credits include films like Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Britney Spears -led 2002 drama Crossroads . Ethan Peck 's Spock is another character who appeared in Discovery alongside Mount. Peck also worked on shows like Madam Secretary and 10 Things I Hate About You . The astute La'an is played by Christina Chong , whose credits include Johnny English Reborn and Tom and Jerry .

Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia , whose guest roles include Bull , Homeland , and Billions . Rebecca Romjin plays Una-Chin Riley, Pike's Number One. While Romjin is known for films like X-Men and Austin Powers , perhaps her most unforgettable role was as Cheryl, the gorgeous girl with the disgusting apartment in Season 4 of Friends . Rounding out Pike's crew are Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune ) as Dr. M'Benga, Celia Rose Gooding ( Foul Play ) as Nyota Uhura, and Jess Bush ( Playing For Keeps ) as Nurse Christine Chapel. Arguably, one of the best parts of the Season 2 finale was the appearance of Lieutenant Montgomery Scott ( Martin Quinn ), of the infamous - and incorrect - quote from the OG series: "Beam me up, Scotty!"

Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios , Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, and distributed by Paramount+. The show was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet , with Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serving as co-showrunners . Kurtzman, Goldsman, Lumet, and Myers are executive producers on the series, alongside Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin , Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Rod Roddenberry , and Trevor Roth .

With many unanswered questions in the Season 2 finale, there are lots of possibilities for where Season 3 could take Captain Pike and his crew. After the fun and games of the previous musical episode , things switched back to danger mode very quickly, and viewers were ultimately left with a cliffhanger. With the re-appearance of the Gorn (the reptilian-humanoid extraterrestrials first seen in Star Trek in the 1960s), Pike was faced with a decision: heed the commands of the Enterprise not to engage with the Gorn, or do whatever he can to save his people. Pike, being the always-optimistic hero that he is, decides he must try and save his crew. And, when he sees young Gorn working together, his hunch that the species may be able to communicate leads him to want to try and save his crew without violence. While it's unclear how big a role the Gorn will play in Season 3, perhaps Pike's interest in their ability to communicate will be an important factor in not having this happen again. To add (gross) insult to injury, it is revealed that Gorn eggs have been planted in Pike's love interest, Captain Batel, and she may have to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone else. This is also not resolved in the finale, adding another layer to what Season 3 might bring. Will she survive? And if so, what happens to the Gorn eggs? Additionally, diehard Star Trek fans were no doubt thrilled to see Montgomery Scott appear in the Season 2 finale. While the character first appeared in the 1960s, as portrayed by James Doohan , this is his first time on Strange New Worlds. The re-introduction of this iconic character leaves a lot of potential for Season 3.

The Mandalorian (2019-)

Disney+'s runaway hit The Mandalorian has taken the world - and the internet - by storm. Premiering in 2019, show creator and showrunner Jon Favreau ( Chef ) has confirmed that Season 4 has already been written. The series follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ), as he travels through the galaxy after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

In the spirit of revisiting classic sci-fi television, for an updated version of the original Battlestar Galactica , try 2004's refreshed version. While not entirely a remake, it offers a more modern view of the cult classic, which originally ran from 1978-1979. Starring Edward James Olmos ( Stand and Deliver ), Mary McDonnell ( Donnie Darko ), Jamie Bamber ( Law and Order: UK ), and, who can forget, Katee Sackhoff 's iconic Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, the show is sure to hit that same, familiar space exploration note.

Lost In Space (2018-2021)

For another modernized take on a classic, try the remake of Lost in Space , based on the original that ran from 1965-1968. The Robinsons are a family who wanted to start over on a space colony (very relatable), but they end up on an uncharted alien planet instead and must struggle for survival. The remake stars Toby Stephens ( Die Another Day ) and Molly Parker ( The Wicker Man ) as Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and ran for three seasons on Netflix.

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Starts Filming According To Anson Mount

Suits la's opposite premise removes the best thing about the original legal drama, battlestar galactica's upcoming reboot can't repeat the 2004 show's greatest trick.

WARNING: This article contains mild SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2. Streaming now on Paramount+, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 continues the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise across an episode count in line with modern Trek shows. Strange New Worlds depicts the final five-year mission of Captain Pike before he hands over the USS Enterprise to Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series . The prequel series also gives new insights into the early Starfleet careers of beloved TOS characters like Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush).

Understandably, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a throwback to the visual style of Star Trek: The Original Series , but with the trappings of modern storytelling. This is reflected in its episode count, which is substantially reduced from the 20 plus episodes that would make up a classic TOS season, and is more in line with modern streaming shows. Akiva Goldsman, who is Strange New Worlds showrunner wants more episodes but for now, he has to deal with an episode count in line with the other shows in the Star Trek franchise.

How Many Episodes Are In Strange New Worlds Season 2?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 has 10 episodes overall, with 9 left after the season 2 premiere "The Broken Circle" dropped on Paramount+ on June 15th. This is in line with its Star Trek stablemates who all have the same episode order per season. The only exception is Star Trek: Prodigy which had a 20-episode season split into two 10-episode chunks. It was a delightfully old-school way of doing Star Trek that Strange New Worlds could adopt if Akiva Goldsman ever gets his wish for more episodes.

As with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1, each of the 10 episodes will be standalone stories of exploration and adventure, combined with overarching character-driven stories. For example, the romance between Spock and Nurse Chapel looks set to intensify after the season 2 opener. Meanwhile, the fate of Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) is set to be decided in a Starfleet court in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera". The new season will also gradually introduce Lt. James T Kirk (Paul Wesley) who takes on a recurring role as his destiny as Captain of the USS Enterprise comes into focus.

Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode Release Dates

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 streams Thursdays on Paramount+. The ten episodes that comprise Strange New Worlds season 2 will therefore stream weekly on the service without breaks. The 10 episode titles for Strange New Worlds season 2 and their respective release dates have already been confirmed by Paramount+. The episode titles and streaming dates are as follows:

1. “The Broken Circle” (June 15th)

2. “Ad Astra Per Aspera” (June 22nd)

3. “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” (June 29th)

There are some intriguing teases within the episode titles for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . For example, season 2, episode 7, "Those Old Scientists" will be the hotly anticipated crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks . More intriguing still is the season 2 finale's title of "Hegemony", which suggests a pay-off for Strange New Worlds ' canon breaking Gorn war tease .

Will Strange New Worlds Return For Season 3?

As with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, the third season was already confirmed before the second started streaming. The hugely positive response to season 1 likely counted in the show's favor, with Paramount+ and CBS feeling safe to put their faith in more adventures for Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise. While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is confirmed, it's unclear when exactly Paramount+ subscribers can expect to see it.

The ongoing WGA strike impacted Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. Production on the next season halted on May 2nd, 2023 when the strike began, and will only resume when a fair deal for writers is agreed upon. While there may be a longer than usual gap between Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 2 and 3, it's only right that the writers behind this incredible Trek show are fairly compensated for their work. Until then, there are 10 brand-new adventures for Captain Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise to enjoy on Paramount+ over the summer.

The promise of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was that episodic television — specifically, the episodic adventures of the starship Enterprise — could still captivate audiences in the age of single-day full-season drops and movie-like “television events.”

With the close of its second season, Strange New Worlds is a fantastic reminder that when you combine the traditional self-contained episode format with a crew that knows they’re getting renewed, you can get great television drama.

[ Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ’ season 2 finale, “Hegemony.”]

That is to say, you can get a cliffhanger in which half the cast is teleported to who-knows-where by the Gorn. It’s a great reminder that this sort of thing used to be Star Trek’s bread and butter.

Back in 1990, The Next Generation ’s season 3 cliffhanger, “The Best of Both Worlds Part I,” showed Riker taking control of the Enterprise after Captain Picard was captured by the Borg and transformed into the chilling entity called Locutus. The final shot of that episode is an electrifying slow pan over Riker’s face as he does the unthinkable, ordering the Enterprise to fire on its own captain. The summer of 1990 was an uncertain one for Star Trek fans, who had to wait from June’s finale to September’s season 4 premiere to find out what happened next.

Is “Hegemony” as shocking as “The Best of Both Worlds Part I”? Nah, you can’t put that kind of lightning in a bottle twice. But it’s still classic Trek shenanigans.

Will there be a season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

Yes! This March, Paramount Plus announced Strange New Worlds would return for a third season on the streaming service. Production on Strange New Worlds season 2 wrapped in July, so the folks behind this cliffhanger were confident they’d be able to follow up on it.

When is season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds coming?

That’s the big question. At a Trek-themed Writers Guild of America picketing action in May, SNW showrunner Henry Alonso Myers confirmed that pre-production on season 3 is on indefinite pause until the AMPTP can come to an agreement with the WGA.

And actual production will similarly be on pause until the AMPTP can come to an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. It’ll be a much longer wait for Captain Pike to come back than the three months of uncertainty between The Best of Both Worlds parts I and II.

Who in the Enterprise crew is still OK?

That said! A lot of the characters in the show will definitely make it out of this pickle alive — because they appear in previous Star Trek shows set after this event. Though M’Benga, Sam Kirk, La’an, and Ortegas all disappeared with the colonists to who knows where, we know M’Benga and Sam will be fine, as they both appear in small roles in Star Trek: The Original Series .

La’an and Ortegas, however, are original to Strange New Worlds , so their stories are less set in stone. That also goes for Captain Batel, who’s nursing a serious case of A Gorn Laid Eggs In Me. Only the real-life crew behind season 3 know these characters’ planned fates, and they’re striking for better working conditions. So until Hollywood can go back to work, and for many months after that, we’ll be waiting.

Anson Mount has announced a production wrap on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3.

On Instagram , Mount posted a video announcing that filming on the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was now complete.

“So that’s it guys, that is a wrap on Season 3. At least for me. There’s still a little bit of work that needs to be done. I feel like I can sleep for a week, but, of course, I can’t because I’ve still got many travels and many things ahead of me to do. I’m trying to keep spoilers out of the shot right now because there’s some stuff going on. Thank you for being patient with us, particularly during the strike. It’s not anybody’s intention for us to have been delayed to that extent.

“Thank you for sticking with us and understanding our need to fight. Thank you to our lifelong Star Trek fans. I am one of you. It’s because of you that I get to live out my dreams like this. I’ll never stop thank you for having me in your house. God bless you all, I’m going to go — I don’t know what I’m going to do. I don’t know what to do with myself anymore. A drink? Food? My daughter is going to be in bed by the time I get home so I’m going to have to figure this out.”

What do we know about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Along with Mount as Christopher Pike, the series stars Ethan Peck as Spock, Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M’Benga, Bruce Horak as Hemmer, and Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley.

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds followed in 2023. Production on the third season was supposed to begin in 2023 but was delayed because of the Hollywood strikes. The new season is now expected to arrive in 2025.

Stark Trek: Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for a fourth season. The first two seasons are currently streaming on Paramount+.

Even before season two premieres, Paramount+ is renewing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a third season.

The company has ordered another 10 episodes of the popular Star Trek series. In addition, Paramount+ announced Strange New Worlds will return Thursday, June 15, for its second season.

The animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks has been renewed as well, for a 10-episode fifth season, with a premiere date to come for later in the summer.

Both shows will be rolled out globally on their respective premiere dates.

The upcoming new season of Strange New Worlds includes a crossover episode with Lower Decks , combining live action and animation. The episode was directed by The Next Generation actor-director Jonathan Frakes.

Also, the animated kids series Star Trek: Prodigy returns for its second season this winter.

Paramount+ has become the exclusive home to every series and every episode of the Star Trek TV catalogue.

The Cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Dives into Season 2 and Teases Season 3

All the juicy tidbits we learned from the hour-long panel discussion!

Following the announcement that production for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently underway , the SAG-AFTRA Foundation released a Zoom panel discussion as part of their Conversation series with cast members Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin-Riley/Number One), Ethan Peck (Spock), Jess Bush (Nurse Christine Chapel), Christina Chong (La'An Noonien-Singh), Celia Rose Gooding (Nyota Uhura), Melissa Navia (Erica Ortegas), and Babs Olusanmokun (Dr. M'Benga).

In addition to celebrating their first week back in production, the cast also received news this month that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds received a Critics Choice Awards nomination for Best Drama Series , along with a nom for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Celia Rose Gooding.

The hour-long conversation spans several topics from the second season, including the crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and a franchise-first musical episode , with teases to the third season. Here are the biggest things we learned from the discussion!

Star Trek 's First Ever Musical Episode

Anson sums up the experience by revealing what showrunner Akiva Goldsman shared with the cast, "It's an idea that should not have worked and somehow it did."

And how did the musical episode came about in the first place? Bush cheekily reveals upfront, "It was Chrissy [Chong]'s fault that this all happened," with Olusanmokun backing her up. Chong herself admits, "I was incredibly excited. It was one of my dreams to do that, to be in a film or TV musical. So for me, it was literally my career coming 360 and living out a dream."

As for Mount, he recounts, "We'd kind of been lobbying the showrunners to do something like that for a while. Not because I'm a singer. I'm definitely not as you can see, but I like 'oh shit' situations. I think they're really good for creativity."

Behind-the-scenes of "Subspace Rhapsody"

Chong shares a memory of her first time at the recording studio, "I walked in on Rebecca singing. I think you just finished singing, recording, 'Keeping Secrets.' And I walked into the studio and listened to the playback of her singing. And I had tears in my eyes. It was so amazing to see your fellow cast mates doing something so incredible and out of the box for what we signed up to originally was just... really amazing."

Even the initially skeptical Peck was "blown away by the whole experience," and found himself "very moved by it."

On the the experience overall, Navia explains, "They've thrown at this cast so many different genres and so many different obstacles, and every single person here goes above and beyond. So when I heard we were doing musical, I was not in the least concerned, just, I was very curious about what the story was going to be. And I think all of us, we knew about the musical for so long. We were rehearsing, we were training, we were singing. And then when we finally got the script, I'll never forget being there, and it was Anson. We were in the transporter room. And I think I was with Babs, and Anson looked up from the script and he was like, 'This is incredible. This is really good.' And I was like, "Anson said it. Oh my goodness, what is about to happen?' So we knew that the script was good, and we knew that we were all going to pull it together, and it was a blast.

The cast was also quick to proudly note that the "Subspace Rhapsody" album "even beat Taylor Swift one day," along with the Barbie soundtrack.

Klingon Opera vs. K(lingon)-Pop

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Make Your Blood Scream (Garkog's Version)

One of the hotly debated moments to come out of "Subspace Rhapsody" was inclusion of a Klingon moment in the middle of "We Are One." When Captain Pike hails the Klingons, the fleet, led by Bruce Horak, who played the fan-favorite Andorian chief engineer from the first season, busts out in pop beat like a boy band.

Mount provides viewers insight to how they came to that creative choice, "Speaking of the Klingon boy band, so when you do a show, you're getting a lot opinions coming in at you from every direction. And this network, I have to say, has been really, really amazing about leaving us mostly alone to try these crazy things. But the Klingon boy band was one thing where they went, 'Whoa, hold on. Hold on. Could it be something a little bit more serious? That is more Klingon-like, like opera.'"

"We were like, 'Klingons have opera,'" continues Mount. "The plot point is that they're embarrassed. So why would they be embarrassed of doing opera? We actually had to shoot two different versions of that scene to show them that one worked, and the other one just kind of didn't. And so when they saw it, they let us get away with the boy band thing."

Gooding points out, "The operatic version is a special added moment on the Season 2 DVD . So if folks are looking for where it is, it's somewhere. It's somewhere out there."

Cerritos Energy vs. Enterprise Energy

"Those Old Scientists"

The second season also welcomed Star Trek: Lower Decks ' Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, bringing their animated characters to the wonderful world of live-action, in " Those Old Scientists ," an episode directed by the legendary Jonathan Frakes.

What was it like for the cast to match Lower Decks ' really fast dialogue?

Mount and Romijn credit Frakes as the ingredient that made the episode work. "The episode really could not have happened without Jonathan Frakes who directs on both series," states Mount. "He was really the perfect person. And with the deep knowledge of Trek , to be able to come in and help meld those two tones together. It was really important that he was there at the helm of that."

"The energy on an animated show, voice-wise is going to be different than on our show," adds Romijn. "Watching them figure out how to massage that with the help of Jonathan Frakes was crucial."

The Yin and Yang of 'Spoimler'

Behind-the-scenes of 'Those Old Scientists'

Reflecting on the Brad Boimler and Spock dynamic and working with Quaid, Peck divulges, "Indeed, Spoimler is a Frakes invention. It was great working with Jack. It's so fun because his character is such a nervous fella, and Spock is so the opposite, and they make a great yin and yang duo, in my opinion. I think Frakes tried to hone in on that. But I'd actually met Jack quite a few years before and was opining, I hope we get to work together someday. And this was just the most amazing venue to do that and with Frakes. So it was a blast working with him."

Mariner and the Evolution of Uhura

Gooding highlights one of the benefits of being a prequel series is that you can see how a character evolves from who you're introduced to in Strange New Worlds and how they become the beloved characters we know and love in The Original Series. In the case of Nyota Uhura, the presence of Newsome's Beckett Mariner was essential.

"I love Tawny Newsome so, so, so much," praises Gooding. "That's a friend for life now. So I'm very grateful to have an opportunity to work with her. Kind of like what Ethan said with the yin and yang, I feel like Uhura, Season 2, is very book focused, very no shenanigan-ry allowed. And Mariner, as a character, is shenanigans full speed ahead."

"Having her be the one to bring out the more playful side of Uhura, I think, is very important because when we're working in a prequel," Gooding continues. "It's important to show the moments and the interactions and the events that mold the characters into the versions of them we'll recognize later. And so the playful nature of Uhura that she inherits, that we see in The Original Series... it's really special to think that, oh, Mariner inspired that in her. That relationship, this moment, was the thing that gave her freedom to let her very short hair down and just have a good time. And Tawny is such a sunflower of a person. And so for her to be the one to bring that energy out of Uhura, and also in turn, bring that energy out of Celia."

"Lost in Translation"

Later in the discussion, Gooding elaborates more on Uhura's journey following the loss of Hemmer at the end of the first season, "I put a lot of my journey with being young and having to grieve loved ones earlier than an age that is fair. A lot of it was just me turning inward and doing a lot of, what's that word? What archeologists do. Excavating."

"A lot of pulling away that dirt and being very precious with the bones of her feelings," continues Gooding. "And my journey with her was just trying to remain honest and then doing the actor thing of knowing the future version of herself, but having to abandon it. And knowing that she becomes this person, this very joyful, very graceful, very knowledgeable person. But what we do in a prequel is explaining how we got to point B from point A. And Uhura's story is filled with a lot of mourning. She mourns her parents, her family, her best friend, but also the life that she lived before she was a Starfleet officer, when her family was still around."

In "Lost in Translation," Uhura finally meets James T. Kirk. On getting to this moment, Gooding reveals, "Paul Wesley, our Kirk, he was such a perfect springboard. He was such a really just open player and somebody who really kept Uhura from really spiraling and hitting rock bottom. He was someone who was constantly keeping her intellectually activated. And that's where my Uhura feels very safe in her cerebral place."

"That episode, and this moment in her relationship with Hemmer and her budding relationship with Kirk, it's going to inform the rest of her journey," says Gooding. "I am excited to see the parts of it that she may want to hide, or the parts of it that reveal themselves to her as she continues to grow and continue to grow into the version that version of Uhura that we know in the future."

More-tegas, More Genres

"Among the Lotus Eaters"

Romijn enthusiastically shares, "I'm going to go ahead and say it. For Season 3, get ready for some more Ortegas."

Navia is blown away by the reception to her character, Lt. Erica Ortegas. "It's been so wonderful when you hear it from fans, and I also hear it from you guys, and I hear it from producers about how much everybody wants more of a character," says Navia. "Like that, again, as an actor, I mean, you could want nothing more. What my response always is, is we have such a fantastic ensemble and we have 10 episodes a season, and the reason that every episode feels like a mini movie is because so much goes into it."

"What our writers have been able to do, and our producers, and our crew, and our creative, and our crew behind-the-scenes have been able to do is really pack so much into each episode where we're able to get storylines for all of us and then also our incredible guest stars," Navia praises. "It feels like from the get-go that you have known these characters for much longer than we have been on your screens."

Navia delights in the opportunities Strange New Worlds gets to explore different genres and embark on new adventures. "There's always a scientific explanation for why we are suddenly dressed in medieval garb, and again, in space," explains Navia. "But it allows us to do so many different things. As an actor, it is a dream role where you get to play really everything you wanted to play throughout your career, you get to do in a season. And after Season 1, I was like, what can they possibly come up for Season 2? And they have shown us. And now that we have been renewed, many things to come in Season 3."

In the Kitchen with Captain Pike

"Charades"

One of the elements Mount was able to showcasing the man Pike is when not on duty, which he workshopped with showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. Recalling a character planning session in the writer's room ahead of the first season, Mount shares, "There's very few things about Pike that I know. And one of them is that when any crew member comes to see him with a concern, everything else goes away. It's all about this person right in front of him, because that's his greatest asset. He's smart enough to know that his crew is really the engine that runs the Enterprise ."

"For some reason, that sparked an idea in Akiva who said, 'I'm getting a picture of maybe captain's table dinners," Mount continues. "I said, 'Oh, wait a second. What if, because he's a horse guy, so he can't take his horse on the Enterprise . What if each captain gets one ask for their quarters, one special ask, and what if Pike's other thing is cooking and so he asks for a kitchen?'"

Echoing Navia, Mount gives us a tease of what's to come for the next season, "I can tell you that the genre conversation has continued. And what's interesting is that, I believe the strike is what got in the way of our between seasons conversations. When we came back to the table and Akiva says, 'Hey, this is what we've got planned.' I was amazed that there were a couple of ideas in there that came right out of my notes of that stuff I was going to pitch. And there's some really fun ideas and some really good character development that we're all excited to tackle."

Diving into M'Benga and Chapel's War-Weary Past

"Under the Cloak of War"

Olusanmokun reveals a key character insight he received prior to production of the series, "Before we started shooting the first season, Akiva had said to me [that M'Benga] used to be a man of violence. Something along those lines. And so I had wondered what could have brought that about, and I'd gone towards this direction of, yes, he was a man consumed by war at some point. And so that was already getting layered into what he was in the first season."

"And then in the second season, we just unlayered some of that," Olusanmokun adds. "It was a beautiful script to get from Davy Perez, and there was just this journey of going deep into the psyche and the past of Dr. M'Benga and him finding a way to really walk out of the darkness. But going back into the darkness, of course we did in Season 2, and just exploring that and the depths of that and his reluctance to be involved, and how he had tried to get out and he kept being pulled back in."

On the constraints of an ensemble cast and 10-episode season, Olusanmokun notes, "I's a real wonderful treat to walk in the shoes of this character, and I'm sure my cast mates feel the same way about their characters. The showrunners and the writers, I think they've been honorable enough to spread the wealth, and I think that's very important because there's eight of us and it would really, really, really suck to be standing on the headlines throughout and having pitter-patter dialogue and whatnot. So to go through what I went through in Season 1 and have what I went through in Season 2, for me, is just a beautiful blessing."

With the episodic nature of Strange New Worlds , the second season traversed from the crossover episode, to a heavy war episode, to a musical one, and then action-packed, horrific cliffhanger finale.

"When we were shooting the Klingon War episode, there was overlap with the musical," says Bush, "and I had quite a big number in the musical and also was quite heavy in the Klingon episode. So there was days where I would come from the AR wall where we had explosions and medical. We were operating on somebody who was hanging on by a thread. And then I would go straight from there to go and practice being lifted up by six dancers and being spun around in the air, which at first, I was like, crap, that's going to be an interesting transition. But it was actually perfect. It was really good to just cut through the intensity and keep my body in this healthy place."

Delving into the second season's "Under the Cloak of War," Bush shares, "Season 2 for me was wonderfully challenging and stretching in so many ways. And on what Babs was speaking about with episode eight, I also just wanted to shout out to Jeff Byrd, the director of that episode, because he was perfect for that. He was such a perfect director for that episode. He was so patient and just so generous with allowing us to go as deep and intellectual and bodily and just look at it from every single angle and really pull it apart and knot it out, and talk and talk and talk to find the truth of that complex experience."

"For me, the standout experience in that was discovering the depths of Chapel and M'Benga's connection and the genesis of that," adds Bush. "It's a really unique bond that they have. It's familial. There's something about it that's really non-verbal and very intimate. There's like a protector slash mentor. And I think that understanding where that comes from in such a holistic and deep way was so illuminating and satisfying and has brought so much depth to that for me. It was a very, very special experience, that episode for me. Unforgettable."

Spock the Human

Peck reveals that initially when he got the role of Spock, it was daunting for him because "this is a very important character to a lot of people."

What has alleviated the pressure is getting to explore new aspects of a much younger Spock, especially as seen in "Charades," which Peck recalls "a fun experience because I need to honor this character, and then do something that's never the character."

"I just have such an amazing cast to work with and I feel safe working with them," remarks Peck. "And the director Jordan Canning was really game to play and understood what I was wanting to do with that version of Spock which was, how far can we take him from who he is, but still recognize Spock in him. And it's an exercise in daringness in a way."

Peck also calls out Spock's relationship with Christine Chapel, "Spock has these teachers that teach him about his humanness throughout his life, and Chapel is one of them. And that's a really special connection. Jess is so wonderful to work with and informing as well of the performance. The characters don't exist without each other, so it was so fun to do that with her."

"At the end of that episode, I was really heartbroken to say goodbye to human Spock," shares Peck. "Because all these things existed beneath the surface. And so, to really wear them on his sleeve was such a relief. And then to have to put it all back away was really sad for me. It was a really interesting experience. Really wonderful. And again, so grateful for that script and so appreciated receiving that."

Romijn interjects asking Peck if Spock remembers what it felt like to be human Spock.

Reflecting, Peck states, "Rebecca, that's a very good question. So that's something that I'm rolling around in my brain as we head into Season 3. How human is Spock now on his path to becoming Leonard Nimoy Spock, at the beginning of The Original Series? How human is he? Thinking about this the other day with Chris Fisher, our directing producer. And I think he remembers all of it. But it's like he's taking drugs and he's had this otherworldly experience. And so he can't really quite inhabit it like he used to, but there'll still be the information, I imagine."

The Impact of Starfleet's Poster Girl

"Ad Astra per Aspera"

The arrival of Lower Decks ' Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner meant that the crew of the Enterprise got a hint of their impact on future generations, especially in Starfleet.

At the start of the second season, Romijn's Una Chin-Riley had to come to terms with the consequences of withholding her Illyrian background — a strict Federation violation. On the experience, Romijn reflects, "It was a real honor to get to take on one of the legacy courtroom dramas for Star Trek . Una had spent the first season, and probably for years before the first season, with years of shame carrying around this terrible secret of being a genetically-modified Illyrian, which is not allowed in Starfleet, and putting Captain Pike at risk for giving her asylum. So to be able to go through the courtroom drama at the beginning of Season 2 and shed that burden, I think is a real turn for her character for the rest of Season 2 and moving forward to get rid of that burden of shame."

It's this shedding of burden that Chong noted earlier in the panel discussion with watching Romijn's musical number, "Keeping Secrets," and how that number impacts her character La'An Noonien-Singh who views Number One as a role model, mentor, and close friend.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds': Everything to know about the latest Paramount+ series

Tomorrow is yesterday in the newest "Star Trek" series. 

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” the 12th series in the franchise , boldly goes into familiar territory, following the space adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount); Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck); and Number One, aka “Una” (Rebecca Romijn), all of whom we last saw at the end of the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery. ” 

Pike, Spock and Number One – along with Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) – first appeared aboard the USS Enterprise on NBC's original “Star Trek" (1966-69), for which “Strange New Worlds” serves as a prequel. 

The Enterprise’s five-year mission might be the same, but there’s still some newness to the landscape – a new theme song; more intimacy between characters; a gender-neutral title sequence intro changing its final phrase from "where no man has gone before" to "where no one has gone before," like in the intro of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”; and new people to meet.

How many episodes and how are they structured?

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” created by Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, premieres May 5 on Paramount+, joining other recent Star Trek series “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Picard” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” on the platform.

The first season will have 10 episodes, released weekly. Filming has begun on a second season, though no premiere date has been announced.

The structure of “Strange New Worlds” is also more reminiscent of the original series, a contrast to the more sweeping storytelling in some other "Star Trek" entries. There will be character arcs, but most adventures in the episodes will be self-contained and less serialized. 

Mount, a lifelong "Star Trek" fan, says the structure inspired the name of the new series.

"When you go to watch a new episode of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,' we wanted that sense of excitement from the top," Mount says. "Not just because you didn't know where the Enterprise would end up, but because you don't know where the Enterprise is going to start. That's what the original series had. You never knew where they're going to be in the galaxy and what new thing was going to be discovered."

Who is on the show? 

When “Strange New Worlds” starts, Pike is home in Bear Creek, Montana, watching the 1951 film “The Day The Earth Stood Still” and seeming to question whether he will return to command the Starship Enterprise. An unexpected visit from Admiral Robert April (Adrian Holmes) comes with a direct order. Pike’s first officer Number One is missing, and the Federation needs his help to find out what happened to her.

Pike is haunted by what he was shown by the Klingons about his tragic future in “Discovery,” a future we’ve seen partially played out in “The Cage” and “The Menagerie” episodes of the original series. But he's trying to continue on despite where his destiny leads. 

Pike was played by Jeffrey Hunter and Sean Kenney in the original series and Bruce Greenwood in J.J. Abrams' 2009 and 2013 films, "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness."

In his relationship to his crew as captain, Pike has some Kirk-like moments where he follows a hunch, but none of it seems spontaneous.

“When we were talking about developing Pike back in the early days of this,” Mount says, “I said to the showrunners Akiva and Henry, 'All I know is that if Kirk leads with his machismo, and Picard leads with his brain, I think Pike leads with his heart.’ His superpower is empathy. And that's what makes him such a good leader."

Science Officer Spock, played by Peck (and originally by Leonard Nimoy), has matured since our time with him on “Discovery.” But there’s a familiarity to this Spock, in his actions and even in how he pronounces some words. 

"There are times when there is no other way to play a moment than with some sort of eyebrow expression or with a tilt of the head that just feels like how Nimoy would do it," Peck says. "I really hope that I'm channeling some version of his spirit of Spock in my performance." 

Number One/Una, played by Romijn, was briefly featured in the first series, mostly through a lens of her relationship to Captain Pike. 

"She was really a blank slate," says Romijn, a longtime "Star Trek" fan. "Our writers have really had this incredible opportunity to flesh out this character. But it comes with some pressure because the 'Star Trek' fans are so protective of the canon and so protective of these characters. I feel like I'm just a caretaker. I get to take some artistic liberties and the writers have come up with so many fun layers for her. And we just want to get it right."

"It's been incredible to step into this legacy," says Gooding about taking on the mantle of Uhura. "Every day, I'm awestruck by the privilege that I have to tell the origin story of this legend, this icon in the sci-fi community. I get to show sides of her that are well-loved and also introduce sides of her that maybe there wasn't space to hold that sort of storytelling in the past."

New to the crew are chief security officer La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), relative of villain Khan, pilot Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) and engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak).

What about Captain Kirk?

Look for the other OG captain in Season 2. Paul Wesley, known for his role on "The Vampire Diaries," has been  cast to play a young James T. Kirk .

A new entry in the " Star Trek " universe, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," premieres May 5. The show will be available to stream exclusively on Paramount Plus . 

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is a spin-off of "Star Trek: Discovery," which is also a Paramount Plus original series. Both shows serve as prequels to "Star Trek: The Original Series." Anson Mount stars as Captain Christopher Pike and the show explores his time in command of the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk replaced him. Mount first played Pike on "Discovery."

Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck reprise their roles from "Discovery" as well; Romijn plays Number One, Pike's second-in-command, and Peck plays Spock, a half-Vulcan science officer who first appeared in "The Original Series." The new show also features other characters that debuted in the original "Star Trek" show from the 1960s, including M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding).  

Early reviews of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" have been positive, and the show currently holds a "100% Fresh" rating on review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes .

You can watch "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" exclusively on Paramount Plus . The first episode premieres on May 5, and new episodes debut every Thursday through July 7.

"Star Trek" and its many spin-offs have seen a wide variety of species working towards common goals in typically peaceful and compassionate means, though that isn't to say that conflict is always avoidable. Just look at Paramount's popular "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" series, which is set canonically before the events of the original '60s series. Focusing on Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" quickly endeared itself to both Trekkies and the general public for its episodic format that often features a message of hope.

Luckily, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" was quickly greenlit for a second season, which is set to premier on June 15, 2023. Needless to say, Season 2 will more than likely hit the ground running when it returns on June 15. In addition, Season 1 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" currently maintains a 99% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, which sets the bar very high in terms of expectations for Season 2.

In an interview with Trek Movie , co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers was asked whether Season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will be different from the first season. Myers answered, "I want to say more of what's worked. But I would also say, in some ways, it's different. We were trying to take what worked and really amplify that. And then try to correct where we weren't happy with it. But the biggest thing we tried to do was not hold back stuff. We were really like, 'Okay, let's pretend this is our last season. And let's absolutely go for everything that we wanted to do.'" With this comment in mind, it definitely sounds like Season 2 of "Strange New Worlds" is chock full of glorious "Star Trek" goodness that will be spread out over ten hopefully awesome episodes.

This made him feel quite melancholic, as he did not know when he would be coming back and seeing them again.

He was specifically asked about his new episode o f Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and has only positive things to say. He started by hinting a little about the plot itself, revealing it to be a murder mystery.
