Fun Disney TV movie about a family led by George (Daniel Stern) and Bess (Julie Hagerty) Piper, who embark on a family trip in a new RV, which dad has purchased without asking. He's obsessed with his Civil War ancestor Jeremiah Piper (Paul Giammati), whose journals he has read his whole life. He wants to travel to the locations Jeremiah fought at and see the sites firsthand. The trip, however, will not go according to plan, and may include situations that could be classified as zany and/or wacky.
I figured going in that this wouldn't be great (an opinion 1998 me would've undoubtedly shared), but amusing enough...and it is. It has two things going for it; it's a Disney TV…

Saw that a friend had watched this, so I subsequently put it on my watchlist. However, when I realized I had read his review on star Daniel Stern's birthday it was enough to immediately seek it out. Thought it would be on Disney+ (maybe it is in the States. Not so in NZ.) But YouTube had it, as they often do with old TV movies.
Wasn't exactly something I needed to rush to, and I pretty much agree with my mate too. But I'll bump up the rating ever so slightly just for a few moments (huge emphasis on a few, btw) that genuinely cracked me up. As well as the contribution of one Paul Giamatti, who even in this…

I’m the first to review this on Letterboxd? Well okay. The movie is actually pretty funny. Daniel Stern is a master of screaming. There’s memorable quips here and there. Ryan Reynolds is in this as a genuine nice guy.
It rips everything off from National Lampoon’s Vacation, but still feels all its own. There’s a silly subplot involving Paul Giamatti as the ghost of a great-great grandfather Civil War vet that leads to a hilarious climax.
Of all the Disney comedies that range from okay to lame, I can’t believe that this one, a made-for-TV only-on-VHS Wonderful World of Disney production is one of the funnier ones they’ve done. I expected shit. Are all their ABC films hidden gems?

Ryan Reynolds/Deadpool & Wolverine Marathon Watch #11:
I decided to checkout this old Disney Channel movie out to see another Ryan Reynolds movie after watching a whole bunch of his flicks last month. This is one of his earliest roles and he was super young. Daniel Stern, from “Home Alone” is the star and Paul Giamatti, who has come along way since this movie! Not a bad cast, but just a very average made for TV “Family Vacation” rip-off. Stern was Clark Griswold. There’s certain parts of this that I’m surprised were in a Disney Channel movie. I never had Disney Channel as a kid, so I didn’t know how they got down, but after the recent documentary, I guess Nickelodeon did too!

Fun little tv movie.
I'm saluting Paul Giamatti playing a war hero

Daniel Stern ran so Robin Williams could walk.
Review by Luke Maxwell ★★
Written by one of my comedy heroes Andy Breckman and loosely based on his own family RV trips. But, it's still a Disney TV movie, so it's obviously not going to reach any kind of potential that Breckman has. If this were a mid-budget PG theatrical film, it could've been a little better. His sense of humor shines through only a little bit. Daniel Stern and others really do their best to sell the comedy with big, goofy performances, but it still has that cheapo TV-movie pacing that hampers it. I watched it with friends, and usually we can goof on stuff like this fine, but about halfway through we tapped out.

My mom's favorite Ryan Reynolds movie. I watched this movie growing up all the time! This movie is greatly underrated. They made a remake with Robin Williams but, they failed by not understanding what truly made Tourist Trap good and the Robin Williams movie called RV, not good. There are other famous actors in this movie but, the big one is Ryan Reynolds.

Must-watch for so many audiences. Ryan Reynolds fans, DCOM fans, and the small group of “The Wonderful World of Disney” fans.
It’s something I’d have loved as a kid. Sad I didn’t see it then. Sad it has been buried since.

Tourist Trap could have easily been one of the movies that Disney could have distributed to theaters in 1998; it would have made a great summer film, but they decided to release it on television. And like many other Disney tv films, it hasn't gotten a proper home video release since VHS. This movie needs a DVD at least.
