You may not have heard of it (yet), but Ruhpolding is ripe for adventure – with epic hiking trails, world-class winter sports, exhilarating cycling, and much more...

1. It’s heaven for hikers

Bavaria’s rich and varied topography makes it ideal for hiking – and Ruhpolding has some of the finest routes in the region. From easy strolls through grassy mountain pastures, to invigorating yomps over Alpine peaks, there’s a trail to suit every level of fitness.

Love a challenge? The return trek of Mount Rauschberg (1,671m) is an invigorating full-day climb through untamed Alpine forests and flower-filled pastures – with a cable car to save your knees on the descent. For easier jaunts, try the 3.9km Fairytale woodland walk (from Staudigl hut in Vorderbrand), or the 5.5km Saga Path (from Eggl Bridge) whose signposts reveal Ruhpolding’s ancient folk stories.

2.  It’s brilliant for biking

You don’t have to have thighs of steel to explore Ruhpolding on two wheels: with super-smooth roads between villages, and undulating trails through its fields and forests, the region is ideal for a leisurely pedal. For added oomph, hire an e-bike: it’ll make any inclines an absolute breeze.

Mountain bikers should head straight for the hills: the Bavarian Alps has trails of all lengths and difficulties, at altitudes ranging from 600m to over 1,800m. Check out the Chiemgau MTB Marathon trail, too, for 104km of adrenaline highs and incredible views.

3. The skiing is spectacular

In winter, those same peaks receive a generous dusting of snow, making Ruhpolding a prime spot for skiing and snowboarding – with cross-country trails and ski touring for every ability. Every January, polar athletes come from all over the world to compete in Ruhpolding’s BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup : proof that its winter sports conditions really are world-class.

Throw in great après ski and opportunities for snowshoeing, sleigh rides and toboggan runs, and you have the recipe for a great winter break.

4.  But you don’t have to be too energetic…

You don’t have to be a trekker or cyclist to enjoy Ruhpolding’s untamed beauty: you can feast your eyes on the mountainscapes without even having to lace up your hiking boots. Vita Alpina’s outdoor thermal baths are perfect for doing just that: come rain or shine, the steamy baths will soothe your muscles in spectacular surroundings – while the indoor pools and waterslides will keep the kids entertained all day.

Seeing the mountains up-close needn’t be a challenge, either: two cable cars will whisk you to the summits of Unternberg and Rauschberg, where cosy mountain restaurants and easy walking trails await. The ride up Unternberg is breathtaking, with a patchwork of treetops and pastures laid out at your feet: keep an eye out for golden eagles and chamois as you go.

Say hello to your new favourite hobby: ‘alm-hopping’. Bavaria’s alms , or mountain hut restaurants, are dotted throughout the highlands – tiny, family-run establishments where the food is always fresh, the schnapps is always flowing, and muddy boots are always welcome.

Whenever you reach one, pop in: you’ll be greeted like old friends by your hosts – often dressed in traditional lederhosen – and fed a feast of hearty cuisine. Local favourites include buttermilk, home-baked bread with handmade cheeses and smoked bacon. It’s hearty, hike-fuelling food – just the ticket when you’re out in the hills.

6. The lakes are lovely

So crystal-clear are the lakes in Ruhpolding Valley, and so spectacular are the peaks that surround them, that the area is dubbed ‘Little Canada’ – and it certainly likes up to its moniker. The Lödensee, Mittersee and Weitsee lakes are an idyllic trio, joined by a single bike path which weaves between the water and the woodland.

Ruhpolding — Upper Bavarian Trump In The Chiemgau

If any place in Germany is worth coming back time and time again, it would be Ruhpolding. Actually, you could live here the rest of your life and still not manage to do or see everything this family-friendly town has to offer.

It is both a summer and winter sports paradise — and offers all sorts of festivals, cultural activities, historic old buildings, and a few museums. Yeah, try doing that on a week’s vacation. ;-)

Because Ruhpolding lies along the Bavarian Alps , the winter activities are wonderful. Try some cross-country skiing, regular skiing, or whatever else you can possibly think of when the white powder arrives.

Don’t like it cold? It’s OK, some people don’t. So, when the weather’s warm you can head to the Vita Alpina , an Adventure Park that has a Wave Pool. There’s also a regular Outdoor swimming pool, if you’re interested.

What else is there to do in Ruhpolding? Try paragliding, miniature golfing, fly fishing, mountain biking, tennis, archery, or riding the cable car to the 1,671 meter high Rauschenberg mountain.

Forget neighboring Austria, I think I can see Africa from here… ;-)

No matter the season, Ruhpolding has something going on. The Village Festival is held in August, while the Oberkrainer Festival is in early June. Same month as the Corpus Christi Procession, come to think of it. September has the St. George Ride, and during Advent there are all sorts of activities at the Holzknechtmuseum (Woodcutter Museum).

That’s just one of the museums in Ruhpolding. There’s also a Heritage Museum, a Motorcycle Museum, and the Glockenschmiede Museum (about church bells and stuff).

On top of everything else, Ruhpolding has some beautiful old buildings. The former Jagdschloss (Hunting Lodge) dates to around 1587; then there’s the Our Lady of Snow in the village of Urschlau (one of its 73 hamlets). The St. George Church is really popular — I guess everyone wants to see its Romanesque Madonna.

No, I think they come to see the richly decorated Rathaus (Town Hall). You ain’t never seen a government building this beautiful with its painted windows, flowers, balcony.

No wonder people spend more than one million “nights” in Ruhpolding every year — and why it has earned a spot on the German Alpine Road , a scenic route of epic proportions.

This has to be one of the best places in not just the Chiemgau , but in all of Upper Bavaria . No wonder it would take a lifetime to see and do it all.

Ruhpolding, Germany

Where is ruhpolding.

Ruhpolding is a small town in the Bavarian Alps which is well-known for its winter sports and Olympic biathlon training centre.

The sprawling settlement of just under 7,000 is located in a wide bowl in the Miesenbach valley along the Weisse Traun river.

It is one of the final settlements on the German Alpine Road (when driving the more usual west-east direction) between Reit im Winkl and Berchtesgaden .

How to get to Ruhpolding

Nearest airport to ruhpolding.

The closest option for those looking for an airport near Ruhpolding would be Salzburg Airport in nearby Austria, which does have quite a wide range of destinations in the winter and summer seasons.

Distance to Salzburg Airport: 46km Distance to Munich Airport: 146km Distance to Innsbruck Airport: 159km

Although it is further away, Munich airport may appeal because of the wider choice of flights and ease of transport. Innsbruck airport is an alternative because of its proximity, but the two previously-mentioned airports probably cover most of the destinations that Innsbruck offers.

Ruhpolding is at the end of a short stretch of tracks which connects the town to Traunstein in the north. This connection, taking only 20 minutes, links in to the main Salzburg-Munich railway line.

Ruhpolding railway station is located within a short walking distance of the town centre.

History of Ruhpolding

There are different theories as to how the name Ruhpolding came about. Some say that it comes from the ancient Bavarian meaning 'the place where the people of renowned strength are' while the local tourist office thinks that it is more likely to have emerged from 'the people of Ruhpold'.

In any case, more permanent settlement in this somewhat isolated valley took place in the 9th and 10th centuries and at this time the area was came under control of the prince-bishops who ruled in Salzburg.

The area was known for mining, mostly zinc and lead ores, but in the 15th century there is evidence that marble quarried from the area was used in the church on the island of Frauenchiemsee.

The rulers of region also liked to use the woods and mountains as a hunting preserve, although in the 17th century much of the woodland was cleared to serve the needs of the salt production at Traunstein.

The distinctive church on the hill above the town - the parish church of St Georg - was founded in the 18th century.

The town was connected to the rail network at the end of the 19th century and the era of tourism opened. By the 1930s the first rail charters were delivering people to the local guesthouses and hotels - in this era, the first spa building was opened.

Like many small alpine resorts, it concentrates on outdoor activities and 'healthy tourism' in the summer and winter seasons.

Although these days the town does have access to a limited amount of downhill skiing, it is far better known as a Nordic winter sports centre. It plays host to an Olympic training centre for biathletes and regularly hosts world cup and world championship events.

Herzlich Willkommen im südlichen Chiemgau! Am Fuße des Rauschbergs befindet sich hier der bekannte Kurort Ruhpolding. Vom Chiemseeufer ist Ruhpolding etwa 20 Kilometer in südöstlicher Richtung entfernt, in die Kulturstadt Salzburg sind es ca. 40 Kilometer.

Mit seinen Chiemgauer Bergen ist das traditionsbewusste Ruhpolding vom Frühling bis in den Herbst hinein ein beliebtes Ziel für Naturgenießer und Bergliebhaber. Die Wanderpfade rundum Ruhpolding führen zu urigen Almen und großartigen Aussichtsgipfeln. Regionale Spezialitäten warten zum Beispiel auf der Langerbauer Alm, die vom malerischen Weitsee bei einer gemütlichen Wanderung zu erreichen ist. Die wohl anspruchsvollste Gipfeltour im Gemeindegebiet führt auf das Sonntagshorn, wo ein gewaltiges Gipfelpanorama auf die Bergsteiger wartet. Gipfelglück ganz ohne schwere Beine eröffnet in Ruhpolding die Seilbahn auf den Rauschberg. Der dortige Ausblick auf den Chiemsee und das Voralpenland ist wahrlich einzigartig.

Baden in einem naturbelassenen Gebiet eröffnet sich ganz besonders an den drei Gebirgsseen südlich von Ruhpolding. Mountainbike-Touren in den Chiemgauer Alpen, Abschlagen an der örtlichen 18-Loch-Anlage oder mit dem Gleitschirm über das Voralpenland fliegen - es tut sich was hier in Ruhpolding.

Weltberühmt geworden ist die Gemeinde durch den regelmäßig in der Chiemgau-Arena stattfindenden Biathlon-Weltcup. Wer hier im Schatten der Profis selbst durch die Loipen gleiten möchte, ist in Ruhpolding gut aufgehoben - bestens präparierte Loipen und eine tolle Winterlandschaft laden herzlich dazu ein. Skigebiete liegen ebenfalls gleich um die Ecke: Übungslifte gibt es in Maiergschwendt und am Westernberg. Sitzen die ersten Schwünge geht's gleich weiter zum Unternberg oder ins erstklassig ausgestattete und schneesichere Skigebiet an der Winklmoosalm.

Ruhpoldinger Ortsgeschichte

Das Holzwesen war im Ruhpoldinger Tal jahrhundertelang die bedeutsamste wirtschaftliche Grundlage. Der Waldreichtum diente zur Versorgung der Saline in Traunstein. In den 30er-Jahren erlebte der Massentourismus durch Urlaubszüge des Reiseunternehmers Dr. Carl Degener einen steilen Aufschwung. Die „schnellste Bergbahn Deutschlands“ (1953), eine eigene Skifabrik und der erste Langlaufski mit Schuppen (Plenk) sowie der Bau des Biathlonstadions förderten Ruhpoldings Aufstieg als beliebter Wintersportort.

Ruhpoldinger Persönlickeiten

Wer Ruhpolding sagt, der kommt an Fritz Fischer (geb. 1956) nicht vorbei. Der Olympiasieger, Sportpreisträger und langjährige Nationaltrainer gehört zu den Biathlon-Urgesteinen am Stützpunkt Ruhpolding. Mit seinem Biathloncamp hat sich der humorvolle Kelheimer große Verdienste um die Nachwuchsförderung und Verbreitung des Biathlonsports erworben. Nicht weniger populär ist der Wahlruhpoldinger und einer der erfolgreichsten deutschen Biathlon-Sportler Ricco Groß (geb. 1970, viermal Olympia-Gold und neunmal Weltmeister).

Märchenwaldwanderung

Sonntagshorn 1.961 m

Lange Tagestour durch die wilden Kraxenbachtäler auf den höchsten Gipfel der Chiemgauer Alpen. Der Weg schlängelt sich von Gumpe zu Gumpe und schraubt sich im Wald nach oben. Es gibt Schatten, Wasser und klare Luft. Perfekt für heiße Sommertage.

Drei-Seen-Gebiet

Im Süden des Chiemgaus liegt in einem Tal das Drei-Seen Gebiet, eine eine einzigartige Landschaft, die nicht umsonst „Klein-Kanada“ genannt wird. Naturgenuss ist hier garantiert!
