Many people visit Oman after spending a few days in Dubai in the neighboring United Arab Emirates, but you may feel a bit overwhelmed by the visa process for Oman. Whether you plan to relax on the beach, explore history Muscat, or go hiking in the Hajar Mountains, here’s a guide to the latest visa requirements for this fascinating desert sultanate.

Who needs a visa to visit Oman?

Citizens of 103 countries – including the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and most EU and EEA nations – can visit Oman without a visa, so long as the stay does not exceed 14 days. See the website of the Foreign Ministry of Oman for a full list of countries approved for visa-free travel.

Citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, can travel to Oman completely visa-free. If you're unsure about the rules for your nationality, check the website of the Royal Oman Police – the body responsible for overseeing Oman's immigration system.

Tourists who are not residents in a GCC country who want to visit Oman for more than 14 days will need to apply online for an Unsponsored Visit Visa. There are various types of Unsponsored Visit Visas, valid for tourism, business travel or transiting through the country, and each has its own rules and conditions.

Visas for 30-day stays in Oman

Citizens of 72 countries – including the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan, and many European countries – can apply for a 26B Tourist Visit Visa, a single-entry visa that allows you to stay in Oman for 30 days. This costs OR20 (US$52), and applications must be made on the official website where a full list of eligible nationalities is available.

The same nationalities can also apply for the 36B Tourist Visit Visa, a long-term, multiple-entry visa that is valid for one year and allows a maximum stay of 30 days in Oman for each visit. It costs OR50 (US$130).

Other classes of Tourist Visit Visas

Citizens from other countries who have a valid Schengen Area visa or a valid visa for the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Japan may be eligible to apply for a single-entry 26M Tourist Visit Visa for OR20 (US$52), or a one-year multiple-entry 36M Tourist Visit Visa for OR50 (US$130). The list of approved countries includes India, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Maldives, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

How to visit Oman from Dubai

Travelers who fulfill the conditions for visa-exempt entry into Oman and have a valid tourist visa for Dubai can apply for a Type 21 Dubai/Oman Common Visa (also called the Dubai/Oman Joint Visa). This free single-entry visa allows a stay of up to 21 days in Oman and is not extendable. It is only valid if you enter Oman directly from Dubai (and not from any other emirate in the UAE).

You can apply for this visa through the Consulate General of the Sultanate of Oman in Dubai. To qualify for this class of visa, your Dubai tourist visa must have at least 21 days validity remaining on the date you enter Oman.

Other visa options for Oman

Five and 10-year multiple-entry visas are available for US diplomatic passport holders and US citizens who are visiting Oman to attend a training course or as a member of an international organization registered in Oman, such as the World Health Organization. To apply, you’ll need to submit additional documents detailing the purpose of your visit.

Applying for a visa for Oman

When applying for an Omani visa via the official e-visa portal , ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after the date you plan to enter Oman. If you overstay your visa, a fine of OR10 (US$26) applies for every day beyond the term allowed on your visa, and you may have trouble entering Oman in future. Oman citizens can now apply for ETA for UK travel

Muscat: Oman citizens travelling to the UK can apply for Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) from today, which will replace the current system of applying for a visa.

The ETA can be applied for those travelling to the UK on or after February 22, 2024.

The same rule applies to nationals of Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Omanis can get an ETA instead of a visa if they are coming to the UK for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term study, coming to the UK for up to three months on the creative Worker visa concession coming to the UK for up to 1 month for a Permitted Paid Engagement transiting through the UK.

Eligible individuals will be able to apply for an ETA online, either using the ‘UK ETA app’ or by searching for ‘Apply for an ETA to come to the UK’ on the gov.uk website.

It costs £10 to apply and everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children.

It is possible to apply for other people. Meanwhile, it takes three working days to get the ETA.

Occasionally, it may take longer than three working days and one can travel to the UK while waiting for a decision.

The applicants will get an email confirming the ETA.

The ETA lasts for two years and can travel to the UK as many times as you want during that time.

According to official sources, the ETA scheme is being introduced as part of reforms to streamline and digitalise the UK’s border and legal migration system whilst enhancing security.

It will help improve UK border security by allowing the government to make the necessary security checks on travellers before they arrive in the UK.

New UK Visa Application Centre opens in Oman

British Minister opens the new Visa Application Centre and announces the easing of student visa applications for Omanis

The opening of Visa Application Centre

UK Foreign Office Minister Hugh Robertson has opened the new UK visa application centre in the Muscat Grand Mall. At the same time the UK has announced changes to simplify the visa application process for Omani students.

These changes follow the recent introduction of the Electronic visa waiver ,which allows Omani visitors to come to the UK visa free, so long as they complete an online waiver at least 48 hours before travel.

The package of enhancements is designed to offer Omanis the greatest possible comfort and convenience when considering the UK as a destination for business, leisure or study.

The new state of the art visa application centre is double the size of the previous facility and now provides far easier customer access. For an additional fee, customers can use the VIP lounge which provides a more personal service.

From the 6th April, Oman was added to the list of nationalities able to benefit from reduced documentary requirements for student visa applications.

FCO Minister Hugh Robertson said:

“The new visa application centre provides a first class experience for our Omani customers. The centre is much bigger than the old one, and will provide far greater comfort, especially for those customers opting to use the VIP facilities. Last year we welcomed more Omani visitors to the UK than ever before, and we hope our new centre and the EVW system will see this trend continuing. “

The British Ambassador to Oman Jamie Bowden said:

“ It is fantastic news that we are able to simplify the visa process for Omani students. We have already done this for Omani tourists and business travellers through the introduction of the Electronic Visa waiver and the new application centre completes the transformation.”

The Electronic visa waiver is proving extremely popular in Oman, with thousands of Omanis benefitting since it was introduced in January but a very small number of people make errors when completing the form which means they are not able to travel.

It is essential when completing an EVW that personal details exactly match a traveller’s passport, this includes entering all middle names and punctuation. Travel details must also be correct including the last port of departure.
