A footballing tour of Barcelona – the city of Messi, the Camp Nou and a club celebrating again

When Barcelona won their first La Liga title in four years earlier this month, it led to an outpouring of joy at the Canaletes fountain, where fans gather to celebrate the team’s successes.

Red flares were lit, scarves were waved in the air and thousands of supporters chanted about Barca manager Xavi , the team’s players — and, of course, Lionel Messi .

This part of the city was packed. There were people of all ages wearing shirts from many different seasons, with flags and scarves hanging from lamp posts.

The delirium was understandable: Barca had experienced troubled times since their last league triumph in 2019. The celebrations represented a release for a city whose mood is often dictated by its most successful football club.

How Barcelona won La Liga: Old-school rules, new hunger and a changing of the guard

Canaletes is one of Barcelona’s football landmarks but there are plenty of others: the iconic Camp Nou, the Castelldefels neighbourhood where many players live and the tennis club where a certain Argentine star’s first contract was drawn up on a napkin.

Here, The Athletic takes you on a tour of those locations. This is Barcelona, a footballing city.

Barca fans have been coming to the Canaletes fountain to celebrate since the first half of the 20th century, when supporters would go to Las Ramblas, the city’s main street, to find out their team’s results. With no television and radio not yet widespread, results were published on a blackboard that hung in front of the offices of the newspaper, La Rambla, which was based in Canaletes.

You will find the Canaletes fountain at the top of Las Ramblas if you start walking from Placa de Catalunya, a large square in the city centre. It is a very touristy place these days that has long since been abandoned by locals. But when there is a title party, this is still where Barca fans come.

The fountain itself is quite small — it is a modest emblem of a club that for many decades had modest goals.

bus tour of barcelona city

“If you drink water from the Canaletes fountain, you’ll fall in love with Barcelona,” a bronze plaque promises. “And no matter how far you go, you’ll always come back.”

Fans drink with every Barca title, hoping to be brought back for another celebration the following season.

The Camp Nou

The celebrations on the night Barca won La Liga were all about Canaletes, but the next day the party started at the Camp Nou with the title parade — held jointly between the men’s and women’s teams, both league champions this season.

Thousands of fans lined the streets and it was also a chance to say an early goodbye to the ground that has been home since 1957.

It used to hold up to 99,354 spectators, more than any other in Europe, before the capacity was reduced when recent building work started.

Now it is set to be partially demolished this summer and replaced by a 105,000-seater stadium that will be the centrepiece of the club’s new ‘Espai Barca’ sports campus.

Special report: Inside the chaos and controversy of Barca's Camp Nou rebuild

But the reconstruction project has so far been anything but straightforward, as The Athletic ’s Dermot Corrigan has explained .

Whatever happens next, the Barca faithful will always hold a special place in their hearts for the ‘old’ Camp Nou thanks to moments like these.

Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys

Barca’s temporary home while those works are being done will be the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys. The former Olympic stadium sits high up on the hill of Montjuic — to the southwest of the city — and has plenty of history .

From hosting refugees from the losing side of the Spanish Civil War who moved to Barcelona in the 1940s and 1950s with work but no home, it became the principal venue for the 1992 Olympic Games. It was also home to Barca’s city rivals Espanyol from 1997 to 2009.

Barca's 'magic mountain' - the former Olympic stadium that will be their temporary home

It has a capacity of 55,926 and an athletics track around it. The seats are grey and worn. It is thought it will cost Barca €15million-€20million to get the stadium ready for them to use, while they expect to lose up to €90m by not playing at ‘home’.

It is a more difficult place to get to than the Camp Nou — you have to walk up from the Placa d’Espanya, another of the city’s main squares, or take a bus — and it is a colder stadium, too, because of the proximity of the sea on the other side of the hill.

bus tour of barcelona city

Barca fans may have to hold their noses as well — chemical plants and decomposing rubbish in the nearby Zona Franca neighbourhood produce a soupy smell which travels across to the stadium.

Pompeya Tennis Club

In Barcelona, Montjuic is known as the ‘magic mountain’. One of the reasons is there are so many hidden corners that even people who live in the Catalan capital do not know about. You are always left with the feeling there is more to discover.

One of those hidden corners is the Pompeya Tennis Club. It is located up the grand Avenida de Francesc Ferrer i Guardia. Past Poble Espanyol — an open-air museum that is a touristy recreation of several emblematic Spanish towns — is the tennis club.

This part of the mountain is largely dedicated to sport. Next door is La Foixarda, an area with a rock-climbing wall in a secret tunnel which is free to use and a rugby pitch that looks as if it were embedded in the hill.

  • How signing Lionel Messi will impact Inter Miami, MLS and American soccer

The Pompeya Tennis Club was founded in 1908 and features six clay tennis courts with three for padel — a racket sport which is especially popular in Spain. It is an institution that is open to all, without lofty pretensions or great luxuries, surrounded by trees and with privileged views of Barcelona.

The former agent Josep Maria Minguella is its president and it was there he starred in a moment that has gone down in football history.

It was between 7pm and 8pm on Thursday, December 14, 2000. Minguella, Barca’s then-sporting director Carles Rexach and fellow agent Horacio Gaggioli were sat around a table in the tennis club’s bar.

bus tour of barcelona city

After weeks of watching a young, slight-looking player, they decided he would join Barca despite being just 12 years old. They wanted to settle the deal right then, but the club’s offices were closed because it was late and the bar had no paper. Rexach took a napkin instead and penned a contract that a few days later would be signed by a notary.

“In the presence of Messrs. Minguella and Horacio (Gaggioli), Carles Rexach, technical secretary of FC Barcelona, undertakes under his responsibility and despite some opinions to the contrary to sign the player Lionel Messi as long as we keep to the agreed amounts.”

Lionel Messi back to Barcelona: Political, complicated but very real

Messi himself was a short distance away. While undergoing trials to see if the club would sign him or not, he had left Argentina to temporarily live at the Hotel Catalonia in Plaza Espana, located a mile away from the tennis club.

The hotel has a large square clock on its facade that is the size of four rooms. Young Leo was in room 546, waiting to see how his future would be decided while looking out of the window at Plaza Espana, with its grand Venetian towers and Montjuic in the background.

Pedralbes, Bonanova, Castelldefels

Barcelona is cut in half by the Avenida Diagonal, one of the city’s most important roads, and it links the neighbourhoods of Sarria, La Bonanova and Sant Gervasi with the wealthier parts of the city. There you find large houses and a greater sense of tranquillity than in the rest of Spain’s second city.

When you walk through Sarria, you realise it has little to do with Barcelona’s more popular neighbourhoods such as Eixample — it feels like its own town. This was the place chosen by Woody Allen as the main setting for his 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Historically, this is where many players have chosen to live. From Rexach — who was nicknamed ‘the boy from Pedralbes’ when he was a player at Barca from 1965-1981 — to Johan Cruyff, Jordi Alba — originally from L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city next to Barcelona — Gerard Pique and Frenkie de Jong .

It is a quiet area close to the Camp Nou which is home to the upper echelons of Catalan society, allowing players to enjoy a degree of anonymity.

This used to be the most popular place for players to live, but as they have become bigger celebrities — and with the arrival of more and more South American players — two places that have become more fashionable are the towns of Castelldefels and Gava outside of the city.

bus tour of barcelona city

Ronaldinho moved to Castelldefels after spending a few months living in the luxury Hotel Arts on the Barceloneta beach. It is a town that has everything: tranquillity, proximity to the city and the beach.

In Castelldefels, the players are relatively close to the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, Barca’s training centre, and can settle in larger grounds protected by the Garraf mountains along the coast. They have enough space to build mansions there, with swimming pools and even football pitches in their gardens.

Its most famous resident was Messi, who still keeps his house in the town’s Bellamar neighbourhood. While it is a favourite destination for locals looking to spend a day at the beach in the summer, in the winter it is much quieter.

Its streets are lined with pine trees, with the sound of crickets and sweeping views. It has won the hearts of several players past and present including Luis Suarez , Marc-Andre ter Stegen , Victor Valdes — who lived on the seafront — and Philippe Coutinho among others.

Food plays an important role in Barcelona and one of the club’s nerve centres is the Via Veneto restaurant towards the west of the city.

You leave the chaotic Avenida Diagonal behind and at the start of the Carrer Ganduxer street is a mysterious-looking restaurant with a red awning and elegant lettering that tells you you have arrived at your destination.

At the door, a man in uniform welcomes customers, who feel as if they are about to enter the grand dining room on board the Titanic. Behind the pearl-grey curtains, you will find a Michelin-starred establishment that is Barca president Joan Laporta’s restaurant of choice.

Many public figures have passed through Via Veneto’s doors in its 56 years: kings, politicians, film directors, actors and artists. It was an obligatory stop for Salvador Dali when the surrealist icon came down to Barcelona from his home town of Figueres in Catalonia.

FC Barcelona’s board of directors visit the restaurant so often that they have an agreement in place with the owners, giving them a discount on their menu. If you go to the restaurant between July and August, you are likely to find Laporta in negotiations over a new signing or player sale in the lounge, with its grey walls and salmon-pink tablecloths.

bus tour of barcelona city

The tasting menu costs between €135 and €175 with a food and wine pairing. It consists of several dishes including a scallop cocktail, an artichoke coulant with black truffle and a Galician veal fillet with black truffle and foie gras.

Another great place for food is the Botafumeiro on the Gran de Gracia street in the heart of the city.

You will find some of the city’s best seafood and fish here and often football players and their families. It became a place of worship during Pep Guardiola’s time in charge of Barca and continues to be a leading seafood restaurant. Prices range from €70 to €100 per person.

A cheaper seafood option in one of the city’s most emblematic settings is La Boqueria market.

Inside there are different restaurants, but the Kiosko Universal is the one that has become the place of choice for the Barca entourage. Journalists, managers, players and ex-players, coaches and ex-coaches all go there to enjoy the fresh ingredients and fish.

The old ground that has disappeared — and the origin of the term ‘Cule’

What better way to finish the route than going back to FC Barcelona’s roots. This place no longer exists so you will have to use your imagination, but on the Calle Industria, you will find the site of one of Barca’s most important stadiums before the Camp Nou.

Barca played there from 1909-1922 and it was located on what is now the corner of Calle Industria and Calle Paris. It held a capacity of 1,500 people and in 1916 that was increased to 6,000 after a two-storey stand was built.

It is important because that is where the term to describe Barca fans — cule — was coined. The stadium was so small that it was known as La Escopidora — the spittoon. But this was also a period in which Barca’s membership rapidly increased, going from just 38 to more than 6,000.

So many people went to the stadium on Sundays that some had to sit on the fringes of the ground, with their backsides in full view of those walking past the stadium. The sight of fans’ buttocks sticking out led to them being called cules — the Catalan word for ‘bum’ is ‘cul’.

Barca played at another stadium before settling at the Camp Nou — Les Corts — from 1922-1957. The club moved there because its by-then 6,341 members could not fit into their stadium on Calle Industria. It was located halfway between their previous stadium and their future one.

It started with a capacity of 25,000 which grew to 60,000. The stadium has been replaced by a 15-storey residential building with seemingly endless windows. The Jardins de Magali park was also built on the site of Barca’s old ground, making the buildings stand out even more in the skyline.

Some sport still goes on in the gardens, with a few petanque courts and a basketball court. But there is little sign of one of the places that helped grow the legend of FC Barcelona.

All about FC Barcelona v Manchester City on the 2024 US Tour

FC Barcelona's first opponent on the 2024 US Tour will be the all-conquering Manchester City managed by Pep Guardiola, winners of the Champions League and Premiership last season. The game is on Tuesday 30 July at a time yet to be confirmed and will be the first test for Barça 2024/25. The tour will continue with games against Real Madrid and AC Milan.

The game will be played at the Camping World Stadium , Orlando. Holding 60,219 people, it was built in 1936 for soccer and American football and hosted games at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the Copa America Centenario in 2016 and many other major sporting events. At the 33rd WrestleMania on 2 April 2017, and thanks to the addition of temporary stands, it attracted its record crowd of 75,245.

Past friendlies with Manchester City

This is the first time the teams have ever met in the US, but they have played two friendlies before. Both the previous games between Barça and Man City were at Spotify Camp Nou, one in the Joan Gamper Trophy of 2009 (which City won 1-0) and a 3-3 draw in a charity friendly in 2022.

Previous meetings with Pep Guardiola

Since Pep Guardiola left FC Barcelona in 2012, he has played four competitive matches against his former club, and the current record is two wins for him and two wins for Barça in clashes against Bayern in 2015 and Manchester City in 2016.

Star attractions

The Camping World Stadium should be able to see some of the Manchester City greats in action, players who helped the side win its first ever European crown, including Erling Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Rodri and more.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Video shows bus plunge off a bridge St. Petersburg, Russia, killing 7

May 10, 2024 / 8:06 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A bus swerved through traffic, veered off a bridge and plunged into a river on Friday in St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, killing seven people, officials said.

The Investigative Committee, Russia's top criminal investigations body, reported the death toll. It did not state how many others were injured, but the emergencies ministry earlier said that six people removed from the bus were in critical or serious condition.

Russian news reports said there were 15 to 20 people on the city bus when it broke through a barrier and plunged into the Moika River in central St. Petersburg. Six of those who were onboard climbed out of the water on their own.

A surveillance video released by the Russian media showed the bus driving fast, making a sharp turn onto the bridge, swerving across lanes and colliding with another vehicle before breaking through the barrier and falling into the water.

One witness described bystanders jumping into the water to try to help rescue passengers.

"They just dove in with their clothes on and helped," she said in Russian.

Authorities in St. Petersburg said that the owner of the bus had been fined 23 times for various violations. Private companies run most of the city's bus services.

Another witness said it looked like "either he was steering erratically or the brakes failed."

The bus driver was detained by police. His wife was quoted by Russian media as saying that managers forced him to work a morning shift after working for 20 hours the previous day and getting virtually no rest.

Authorities opened a criminal investigation into alleged traffic violations and unsafe travel services.

Real Madrid celebrate La Liga title win with bus parade

  • Real Madrid squad tour Spanish capital to celebrate La Liga title win
  • Championship was secured last week after Barcelona were beaten by Girona
  • Los Blancos hoping to add Champions League trophy to bulging cabinet

By Jude Summerfield | May 12, 2024

Real Madrid celebrated their La Liga title win

Real Madrid celebrated their 2023/24 La Liga title triumph on Sunday as the team traveled around the capital on an open top bus through the streets of the Spanish capital.

Los Blancos reclaimed the championship from Barcelona last week and the playing squad, manager Carlo Ancelotti and president Florentino Perez were presented with the trophy by RFEF president Pedro Rocha at their Valdebebas training ground on Sunday morning.

Madrid beat relegated Granada 4-0 on Saturday night in a dead rubber with a heavily rotated starting XI and have three more La Liga fixtures to fulfil before they take on Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on Saturday 1 June.

Their title celebrations had been postponed until after the semi-final with Bayern Munich, where two late goals from Joselu propelled them to the final at Wembley Stadium.

"This is a special league title for Real Madrid , because we've won it with the values of a team," Perez said.

"Everything we've done is thanks to effort, hard work, humility. This team has overcome a lot of adversity, with a lot of injuries, and they've come through it. [Thibaut] Courtois, [Eder] Militao and [David Alaba] are an example of how to overcome.

"This 36th league title is 'the league of overcoming.' History obliges us to keep winning and the other day we had another magical night at the Bernabeu. We'll give everything to win the 15th [European Cup]."

Addressing the fans in Spanish at Puerta del Sol, England midfielder Jude Bellingham added: "Thank you for your support and your affection this season. One more big game at Wembley, and we're going to win. Come on Madrid!"

Madrid's next game is a home fixture with 11th-placed Alaves at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
