10 of the Best Cider Tours in the UK

10 of the Best Cider Tours in the UK

There's nothing better than going on a real cider tour. The holy grail of cider enthusiasts! It’s not only a chance to see the best cideries and orchards, but it’s also an opportunity to meet the experts themselves who can show you the ins and outs of how they create their wonderful cider.

We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the UK on our mission to discover real cider. Here is our review of some of the best tours in the UK, all of them a fun experience for any cider lover:

1. Westons Cider Tours:

Weston Cider Tours not only show you how they produce their world-class ciders, but they also walk you through the history of cider making at Westons. This cider tour also includes a tutored cider tasting with one of their experts, and it is perfect for a summer outing. Tickets for Westons Cider Tours are available on their website and are great value for money. You can find them in Ledbury, Herefordshire.

2. Burrow Hill Cider Tours:

3. Ciderologist London Cider Tours:

4. The Newt in Somerset:

The Newt in Somerset is a great option. They offer much more than just cider tours, including hotel rooms and a spa. Their cider tours are free of cost and typically last half an hour, including a small tasting session. You can see the press and cellars on this cider tour, and since there's no age restriction, you can come here with your entire family. Additionally, you can also opt for garden tours and they have a great display of cheeses here too!

6. The Ciderologist Bristol Cider Tour:

7. Dorset Nectar:

8. Kentish Pip Cider Tour:

9. Sheppy’s Cider Tour:

Sheppy’s offer weekend tours, giving you a peek behind the scenes at one of the oldest cider makers in the world. There’s plenty to see and each guided tour includes access to the orchards, the press house, the vat house and the Sheppy’s rural life museum and it culminates with a guided tasting of some of their best loved ciders. With a bar and restaurant on site as well you really can make a day of it. You can book on their website and they can also run private tours for larger groups.

10. Perry’s Cider Tour:

Perry’s farm is open to the public every day of the year (except Christmas day). It’s well worth a visit, with lots to do and see, including a cafe and farm shop. You can have a look around the working cider mills, taste the cider and also visit the small 16th century thatched cider barn museum on site (where the company first started from).

We offer complimentary, self-guided tours of the Mill everyday during our operating hours.   Witness the historic cider-making process in the learning center and cider-gallery, explore the Mill Store Marketplace and taste our beverages in the Tasting Room.

Milling around is part of the fun at the Fly Creek Cider Mill and there is no better place to start than by the Millpond. Located just behind the Mill, the pond is where water energy that drives the cider making machinery is held before releasing it through the turbine. It is also home to the Mill's friendly ducks and geese whose antics are entertaining to watch.  The new "Quack & Honk" Gemstone Mining Sluice is ready and waiting for you to find your hidden Gems!  The wheelchair-accessible boardwalk provides a wonderful place to sit, relax and enjoy a refreshing treat from the restaurant and bakery — all the while taking in the beautiful view.

Children will not want to leave without exploring Tractorland next to the Restaurant & Bakery: a kiddie play area for ages 2 - 6 with a paved little-trike track and a wooden climb-on tractor. Plenty of covered picnic tables are provided for mom and dad to enjoy a food and beverage treat while the young folks work off their energy.

All these tours, attractions and activities make the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard a fun stop for any Cooperstown area itinerary

Book an Orchard and Cider Tour

Experience the magic of the orchard .  Learn about the important role of bees in pollinating the apple blossom and have an opportunity to commune with nature in this stunningly beautiful orchard.

Explore some of the history and folklore behind cider and apple orchards.  Participate in the ancient orchard tradition of wassailling - where you make a huge, big NOISE to chase away any 'baddies' that might affect the trees and then invite in all the good spirits!

Discover how the apples grow, harvested and pressed.

Then learn how we make our ciders , with a tour of the apple bay.   We currently use an old belt press that Oliver and our son Dante renovated.  It's very efficient.                      As back up, we have a hand built a very large hydraulic press, which has two 58 tonne rams and uses a traditional rack and cloth method.  We are also renovating an antique twin screw press dating back to 1863, the original apple press used on this farm.   Then an explanation of how the cider is made and a peek into the very up to date Cider Barn.

You're introduced to the beneficial properties of naturally fermented apple cider vinegar.  You even get to taste it!!

We finish with a guided tasting of our award-winning artisan ciders .  If the weather allows, we sit out in the sunshine in the Sculpture Garden, otherwise cosily indoors in the Tasting Room and shop.

Located near Bridport, Dorset, we run our Cider Farm tours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11.00am

For £15.00, not only do you get a Cider Farm tour, but also a guided Cider tasting and a stroll through the beautiful orchards and organic farm. You will learn more about how we make our delicious craft ciders right from our cider masters who are happy to answer your questions.

The Orchard and Cider Tours run throughout the year.  Please do call in advance to book your place. Our telephone 01308 488382 and email [email protected]

You’ll see how times have changed and no doubt you’ll hear a story or two about the Thatcher family. And of course, you’ll also get the chance to try a few ciders too!

We look forward to welcoming you to Myrtle Farm in Somerset sometime soon!

Please don’t worry if the “valid till” date is looming on your voucher – for the foreseeable future we’re accepting all vouchers issued as a result of cancelled tours. We don’t want anyone to be disappointed!

What to expect from your Thatchers Cider Tour

Our tour is available for individuals (1-15 people) or groups (15-30 people) and lasts approximately 2 hours. Please note some of the buildings in our mill have narrow corridors and uneven floors, steps and stairs. Therefore we regret they are unsuitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or similar mobility aids. Please read our terms and conditions before booking.

The tour is £15.00 per person.

We’ll take you around the mill, where you will be shown how we make our cider from start to finish, with over 115 years of cider making expertise. The tour introduces you to our working mill and packaging hall, and whilst we always want to show you as much as we can, we can’t guarantee that every line will be operating during every tour.

At the end of the tour, you’ll get the chance to sample some of our Somerset Ciders, from the well-known brands, to our limited edition range.

A fantastic way to spend a couple hours in the heart of Somerset cider-making country.

We had to rearrange the tour at short notice and Dan was great and very understanding. It was a lovely atmosphere with some excellent local Cider, and our host talking us through them all and answering any and all questions. A fantastic day out, big thanks to Dan and the team!

Kiera and Dan were excellent and we combined the experience with some tasting n the Cider Box Bristol supported by Danie in the Cheesemonger who was equally superb. Planning to book again with a few work colleagues.

Really enjoyable, I found a place to drink I’d not been to before. The knowledge of the host was excellent

We really enjoyed the drinks. Learned a lot about cider!

Very good, and the host was very good and knowledgeable, I learnt a lot about Cider

We actually had a great laugh on this tour! Dan had some good banter about him and our group was awesome!

Dan was a great guide and made the day a lot of fun. The Cider was delicious and would recommend to anyone visiting Bristol

Dan was a great host, we really enjoyed the cider and tour.

Dan was great fun, a nice laid back tour that gave me a slightly different view of cider

Dan was a great host and ensured all who attended were included, great walk around the harbour tasting different ciders - great fun!

Great way to spend an afternoon!

we were a very small group which changed the experience, it felt more like going out for a drink to get to know your new colleagues and to tell your best stories, we felt we had made friends as well as learning about cider. Dan still managed to get a word in edgeways and regale us with some fun facts as well as being a Consummate Host. Was a fabulous experience one of which I will recall fondly for years to come.

Brilliant day out. Great to find out about the local ciders, and the company was great. Would definitely recommend.

Informative and interesting. Nice interactive atmosphere. We had a lot of fun 🤩

The cider and cheese was delicious. Very informative host :) great fun!

Had a great time on the walk! Dan was a very knowledgeable and fun host who knew his stuff. More servings of cider than I was expecting, which was a pleasant surprise - all delicious. Also very generous portion of cheese from the Bristol Cheesemonger. Would definitely do again!

My husband and friends really enjoyed their time. Their host Dan was brilliant, he knew his stuff and they really enjoyed listening to his talk. The weather marred the occasion somewhat but we would highly recommend anyone doing this tour. Oh and the cheese was superb LOL

To the east of Caen, the Cider Route is a 25 mile signposted trail that criss-crosses the Pays d’Auge down picturesque country lanes connecting the villages of Beuvron-en-Auge (one of the ‘most beautiful villages in France’), Cambremer, Bonnebosq and Beaufour-Druval. Along the way, you have the choice of stopping off at over twenty cider farms!

LE CRU DE CAMBREMER in the Pays d’Auge

This landscape of densely wooded hills and dales and grazing cattle makes for a picture postcard journey through Normandy: it is punctuated by châteaux, manor houses, timber-framed cottages and apple orchards, a gift to the photographer and painter!

It is in great measure a landscape given over to the breeding and rearing of horses, and tucked away behind white fencing and high gates, set well back from the road by long driveways, can be found some of the most prestigious and wealthy stud farms in the country, known as haras (hence ‘horse’)

On the Cider Route distilleries and cider farms are indicated by the sign Cru de Cambremer .

The apples from which it is prepared are not eating apples; they bear many beautiful names such as la bouteille, le domaine, le tranquille, le bedan, le rouge-mulot  or  la petite sorte . These are blended in proportions kept secret by their producers, and from them a pure apple juice is produced, the first step. Cider is a living liquid, it matures, it clouds, it clears. The sugars in the pure juice will transform into alcohol, producing a drink easy on the palette and direct in taste, each a little different according to the criteria of the cider farm from which it comes. Cider is a drink that accumulates between 3° and 5°of alcohol by the fermentation of its sugars. Its strong characteristics are the result of being a totally natural product. The cider of the  Cru de Cambremer has a slightly bitter edgy taste which is great for quenching the thirst.

Fête du cidre et de la pomme à Beuvron-en-Auge

Calvados, the apple brandy, improves with age, in contrast to cider. This wonderful  eau-de-vie  is still made along traditional lines and is the greatest expression of the apple you can find anywhere. The cider destined for calvados won’t be bottled but left in cask to allow the sediment to settle within. After a year or two it is ready to be distilled according to the process used in the creation of any great  eau-de-vie.  There are two stages in this distillation. In the first distillation the unadulterated alcohol is extracted and then passed through a second distillation process in order to obtain the calvados, giving it depth and flavour. The calvados is stored in oak casks where it picks up the tannins in the wood and ages gracefully. Its age in cask is important as it affects the sophistication of the taste and some family businesses store casks of calvados that is over 50 years old (once bottled it ceases to age, unlike wine).

Calvados du Château du Breuil

The Norman apéritif consists of apple juice and calvados selected to recipes that go back into the mists of time. It also ages while in oak casks and takes on a lovely amber colour. It is best served chilled and you’ll find it easy to drink, sweet as a sherry, thirst quenching, with plenty of body.

Planning a visit.

The Cider House is where we research, develop, produce, and package all of our cider. Thursday through Sunday, we turn the middle of our production floor into a taproom and open it to visitors. We are 21+ and visitors must have ID's to enter. Our Cider House Taproom is a unique experience and you should read through the rest of this page and/or our FAQ page to know what to expect ahead of your visit. We offer one tasting flight per person, per day. Each flight comes with 4 flavors and with 12 rotating taps, you can choose all your faves or be one of the first people to test a brand new, taproom-exclusive flavor that may or may not hit the market someday. Afterwards, be sure to grab some Downeast merch and stock up on cans, growlers, or even kegs to take home with you. In the summertime, it doesn’t have to end there–head over to our pop-up cider garden located across the shipyard parking lot and enjoy full pours on tap or a freshly cracked can while you watch the best view of the sun dipping below the Boston skyline.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING

WE ARE A 21+ FACILITY. at both the cider house / taproom and our outdoor pop-up, all members in your party (yes, even your dd!) must show an ID to enter, no exceptions.

FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. we do not take reservations, we seat parties as they arrive.

WEEKENDS ARE BUSY. EXPECT A WAIT. saturdays and sundays are our busiest days. we have limited seating and no standing room. wait times vary but can be anywhere from 5 to 55 minutes during peak hours. we do our best to turn tables over but ask for your patience.

YOU WON'T BE SAT TIL YOUR  WHOLE  PARTY ARRIVES. leave your chronically late friends out of these plans. on busy days and when we have a line, we cannot seat you until your whole party is physically there with you ("they are parking" doesn't count, we gotta see them for ourselves). parties arriving at separate times seriously impacts our ability to keep the line moving and causes longer wait times. once you are sat, we cannot seat new people at your table. please plan for your party to fully arrive before hopping in line. if the season is right and our outdoor pop-up is open, it's a great place to grab a cider and hang out while you wait for your crew!

PARTY SIZE MATTERS. we always try our best to accommodate but due to limited seating, we cannot guarantee that groups of 7+ can be sat all together.

groups with 10+ cannot be accommodated unless we split the group up and seat you separately.

KIDS AND BABIES ARE NOT TAPROOM FANS. we love kids. but they don't really love us and to be honest, we get it. our floors are concrete, we have no food, no non-alcoholic beverage options, and no ball pits. everyone in the cider house must be seated–and with lots of fancy cider-making machinery, ingredients, and chemicals around, we cannot allow children (or adults, for that matter) to be wandering, toddling, or running around. that being said,  if your kid is 10 years old or younger, we won't make them wait outside or anything like that, we just ask that they are seated or in your arms while visiting.

WE DO NOT OFFER TOURS. tours kinda boring anyway. who wants to be wearing close toed shoes and safety goggles when you can just sit at your table with a view of the whole thing? seriously, our taproom is in the middle of it all and the walk to the bathroom is essentially a self-guided tour of our entire production line.

but if that's not enough for you and you're interested in seeing it all in action, visit us on a thursday when our cider production and packaging is fully operational and you can sip your flight while watching our next flavor get canned right before your eyes.

BOGO Flights of Hard Cider

Need a break from hiking? Kick back at Sierra Cider’s tasting room with two flights of locally-crafted hard cider for the price of one. Taste four different seasonal cider varieties while reveling in beautiful views of the apple orchard and mountains from the rooftop deck. Play all sorts of super fun bar games and meet some cute critters at the petting zoo, featuring Trudy the Mini Pig! All you have to do to redeem the offer is walk up to the bar and whisper the secret code phrase “TRUDY, TRUDY, FRESH AND FRUITY” and then give a big wink. They’ll know that Trudy sent you.

Sierra Cider is an apple orchard and cidery in the historic foothills of Central California near the north gate of Yosemite National Park. Come take a walk through our orchard and learn about what makes its 19 varieties of apples so special (and why you probably don’t want to eat them), a brief history of American cider, some slightly embellished tales about the local wildlife, and some jokes that will either make you laugh or groan, depending on the weather. Then kick back at our tasting room to enjoy some bar games, beautiful views and a meet and greet with some really nice dogs and some really goaty goats. Oh, and cider of course. You’ll get to drink cider. One sip, and you’ll understand why they call it “Campfire Champagne.”

Glass + three bottle taster gift pack, description.

Enjoy a cider tasting and tour at our beautiful East Sussex orchard and cidery!

Each tour with Bignose & Beardy includes...

  • A tour of the orchard, seeing the trees, how they grow and produce apples for cider
  • A hands on tour of the cidery, seeing the press, tanks and other facilities used to make our cider
  • A tutored tasting and history of all our ciders sitting out among the apple trees (or in the cidery if it is wet)
  • Stay on after the tour and enjoy free entry to our tap night with live music, food and cider (when running on the same date)

Bignose & Beardy make real vintage Sussex cider and vinegar using local waste fruit. Our ciders are wild fermented, slow matured, unfiltered and unpastuerised. We produce small batches which change in profile with each year, depending on the source of the apples and the weather. We do everything by hand and leave our ciders to mature for at least a year and often longer, resulting in complex flavours. Our ciders are Eastern Counties or New World in style, fresh, acidic, fruity, floral and delicious.

Add a discounted three bottle gift pack to make this a great gift idea for a cider fan - we'll send it out when we receive your booking. If you would like a gift voucher, just drop us an email.

The Cidery is at: Upper Brookhouse Farmhouse, Brookhouse Lane, Framfield, TN22 5QJ

Our What/Three/Words location is: acute.fermented.begin

The Best Hard Cider To Try For Beginners, According To An Expert

hard apple cider with fresh apples

Venturing into new culinary territory is both risky and exciting. If you like the carbonation of beer and the fruitiness of wine, the odds that you'll like cider are high. Like beer and wine, ciders have a wide range of characteristics , so if you're overwhelmed by the choices, we reached out to cidermaker and co-founder of Brooklyn Cider House , Peter Yi, to provide you with the best hard cider to try.

In an interview with Tasting Table, Yi guides newcomers to ciders by comparing their taste and mouthfeel to wine. He likens the production of both alcoholic beverages, stating, "Yeasts convert apple fruit sugars to alcohol during fermentation, producing hard cider — just like wine is made with yeasts eating grape sugars." Since apples and grapes are both fruits that contribute sugar, flavor, and tannins to their respective alcoholic beverages, you can use your taste in wine to inform your selection of hard cider.

Wines tend to range from high-tannin and dry to sweet and fruity. Because of this, Yi says, "If you're used to dry wines, you will enjoy dry hard ciders." Fans of sweet fermented beverages will like "a fruitier style of hard cider." He chooses the middle ground for beginners by recommending Brooklyn Cider House's Kinda Dry cider, which he describes as: "An entry cider in our lineup — it is off-dry and has more fruit flavors."

More guidance on cider characteristics

For curious drinkers who aren't local to the five boroughs, Yi goes into detail about types of ciders and indicators of a good cider based on its label information. Cider apples, like wine grapes , are different from the apples you buy to eat. Yi says, "Cider apples have more tannins, acidity, and bitterness ... resulting in better body and more complex flavors of cider." Therefore, if you're looking for high-quality cider at your local grocery or liquor store, Yi explains, "Some good cider apples to look out for on a label include Dabinett, Kingston Black, Porter's Perfection, Ellis Bitter and Manchurian Crabapple."

That said, ciders can be elaborated from other fruits like pear, strawberries, blueberries, and stone fruits. Yi admits he's experimenting with different fruit combinations at Brooklyn Cider House. In addition to different fruits, ciders can be carbonated or non-carbonated, also known as sparkling and still.

The best way to get acquainted with ciders is a tasting because you can try a little bit of a wide variety of flavors, carbonation, and dryness. Even if you don't have a cider house nearby, you can create your own tasting party with friends by buying different kinds of cider. Yi opines, "You should try a dry sparkling, dry still, off-dry sparkling and off-dry still ciders, plus a semi-sweet one and a pet-nat or methode champenoise sparkling one."
