The Claypool Lennon Delirium Two Worlds

“Sean is a musical mutant after my own heart,” said Claypool. “He definitely reflects his genetics--not just the sensibilities of his dad but also the abstract perspective and unique approach of his mother. It makes for a glorious freak stew.” After some impromptu, backstage jams and an epic live sit-in on Primus’s psychedelic opus, “Southbound Pachyderm,” Claypool approached Lennon about doing a recording project. “I was trying to wrangle up an Oysterhead reunion since Primus was taking a rest for 2016 but the planets just wouldn’t align for that,” said Claypool. “I don’t like sitting around, so when Sean said he didn’t have plans for this next year, we started kicking around the notion of making an old-school, psychedelic/prog record. Next thing I know, he’s staying in my guesthouse, drinking my vino and banging on my drums.”

Lennon responded, “I told Les that I was Neil Diamond’s nephew. I think that is what really sold him on the idea of working with me.”

Over the course of six weeks or so, the two wrote and recorded a total of ten songs with both of them sharing various vocal and instrumental responsibilities, going beyond their core instruments of bass and guitar. Claypool explained, “Usually I play the drums and percussion on my records but Sean has such a different feel than I do, it just made more sense for him to man the kit on most of the tunes on this project. I took the helm at my old vintage API console and let him bang away. He was happy as a piggy rolling in shit every time he grabbed the sticks…his drumming is like a cross between Ringo and Nick Mason. But I think folks will be most surprised by what a monster guitar player he is, especially when you prod him a bit.”

“Monolith of Phobos” is just how the title implies--an old-school approach to a psychedelic space rock record.

Lennon added, “It’s been an honor and a challenge playing with someone of Les’ caliber, but luckily the Gods of Pinot Noir shone favorably down and granted us a bundle of devilish tunes about monkeys, outer space and sexual deviancy.”

The Claypool Lennon Delirium “Monolith of Phobos” record is slated for a spring release and the band will be touring through the summer.

PRIMUS' Les Claypool announces first FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE tour in 20 years

Following previously announced festival appearances from Les Claypool 's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, the Primus mastermind has announced the shape-shifting collective's 41-date Summer of Green Tour 2023, which marks the band's first trek since summer 2003. Joining Claypool this time out will be his Claypool Lennon Delirium bandmate Sean Ono Lennon on guitar, that group's Paulo Baldi on drums, original Frog Brigade member Skerik on horns, Mike Dillon (who enlisted in the Brigade in 2002) on percussion and Harry Waters on keyboards. Performances will feature a full performance of the classic Pink Floyd album Animals .

Fishbone, Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew: Remain in Light, Neal Francis, the Budos Band, W.I.T.C.H. and Moon Duo will jump on the tour on various dates. Check out the full itinerary below. Tickets go on sale Friday, February 3rd, at 10 a.m. local time.

Les Claypool is either an artist you love or hate, but if you're anything like me then you will absolutely love his live shows. From Primus to Oysterhead to his solo work, he is always an entertaining performer and has his own unique twisted brand of humor that always shines better when you see him live. Most people don't know it but he made the theme song for the tv show "South Park", but he has a ton of more songs worth checking out such as "Boonville Stomp" and "Long in the Tooth". He always loves to try new experimental songs on tour, and he is always worth seeing live as he puts his twangy and bassy twist on old favorites and plenty of covers like Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box." His distinct voice, style, and skill on the bass guitar make him stand out and his extended bass guitar solos are always a sight to see live. He doesn't garner a huge following, making his shows a good fit for festivals or smaller shows, which is better because he doesn't put on extravagant shows. It's mostly a few guys on stage with him helping out with guitars and drums, but they mostly fall in the background as Les shines in front of them. You haven't seen a performance like this before until you've seen Les perform a 15 minute bass solo.

I haven't seen Les alone, but I've seen Primus a few times and Les always puts in a great show! One of my favorite bands since 1990. Absolutely an amazing bass player and he always mesmerizes me!

Watch Now: Les Claypool Chats Upcoming Albums with Delirium and Billy Strings

Yesterday afternoon the latest installment of Kyle Meredith With… premiered. During the podcast, which can also be viewed on YouTube, Primus bassist, Les Claypool, spoke virtually to the program host about, his current venture with Billy Strings and more. 

During the one-on-one, Meredith posed a question to Claypool regarding the potential for a Fearless Flying Frog Brigade LP. The musician offered that he is halfway through a new The Claypool Lennon Delirium LP and  “Billy Strings and I have been working on a record.” Claypool followed up with additional information on the set of music with the bluegrass prodigy, “It’s kind of Duo de Tawng. Nothing against [Bryan] Kehoe because Kehoe is a badass, but Billy is just a whole nother level. It’s pretty amazing playing with that guy.”

Claypool continued his commentary on collaborative work with Strings. He stated: “We’ve just been picking away at it. I’m not sure where it is or where it’s going and if and when it’ll ever come out.” He added, “We have a handful of songs and we’ve been having fun with it. But now I’m getting busy and he’s busy. So it’ll come together whenever the planets align.”

Claypool also stated “He’s become a good friend, a friend of the family and I hear these stories. We have kind of similar upbrings. His was even more colorful in many ways and he’s got more years on him than his actual tenure on the planet–If that makes any sense.”

The musician tacked on the following onto his response: “He’s got an old soul vibe to him. I call it salt. He has salt. He’s salty, he’s the real deal. He can play like he plays because he sat on the porch with his family for many years and just played with his friends and relatives and it’s like breathing for him.” 

On the topic, Meredith commented on his hopes to hear the material, to which Claypool said, “It’s more a matter of getting in there and finishing.” He concluded, “It’s like a bathroom that you’re wallpapering and you haven’t quite gotten it there yet. You’ve still got to paint the trim.”

The Claypool Lennon Delirium Summer Tour

The Claypool Lennon Delirium will begin their Summer tour on June 4th and the touring band includes Les Claypool (bass, vocals), Sean Lennon (guitar, vocals), Mark Money Mark Ramos Nishita of Fishbone (drums), Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads (guitar), Adrian Belew of King Crimson (guitar), Neal Francis (keyboards), the Budos Band (horns), WITCH (bass), and Moon Duo (guitar, drums).

Joining Claypool on the Summer of Green Tour 2023 will be his The Claypool Lennon Delirium bandmate Sean Ono Lennon on guitar, that group's Paulo Baldi on drums, original Frog Brigade keyboardist Jay Lane, and a very special guest appearance from Mike Dillon.
