The Joy Formidable are a rock band hailing from North Wales who formed in 2007. Since their debut they have released two studio albums along with three extended plays, and have become one of the most exciting Welsh rock bands of the past two decades.
Formed by childhood friends Ritzy Bryan and Rhydian Dafydd after they played together in the Manchester based rock band Tricky Nixon, The Joy Formidable came together in 2007 after Bryan and Dafydd drafted Justin Stahley in to play the drums one their own project, which at the time was unnamed. After the trio realized the chemistry they had together when performing live, the band named themselves The Joy Formidable, and after a year of rehearsing, recording and writing together, they released “Austere”, their first single, in July 2008. After they put a Christmas single up for download on their website at the end of 2008, the band self-released their first extended play “A Balloon Called Moaning” in January 2009, which was when they really started to get glowing noticed in the national music press.
Not only did the record get the band noticed in the United Kingdom, but also in the United States after it was re-released on Passion Pit's synth player Ayad Al Adhamy's label Black Bell Records. Because of this, the band were able to sign a record deal with Canvasback Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic, in 2010. The band's debut album “The Big Roar”, was hailed as a triumph by those who heard it, including some nobody called Dave Grohl, who called its third single “Whirring” his song of the year. The band released their second album “Wolf's Law” in January 2013 and to this day, the band remain the most collosal sounding rock band since Muse. With a live show that's just as epic, and the world at their feet, The Joy Formidable come highly recommended.
Live reviews
Welsh alt-rock titans The Joy Formidable, featuring the indomitable Ritzy Bryan, sticksman supreme Matthew Thomas and master fret-tormenter Rhydian Dafydd, are vital indeed. Busting at the seams with powerhouse singles like “Austere”, “Cradle” and “Cholla”, their veritable treasure trove of music will excite and impress in equal measure. What sets the band apart from other rock acts is their propensity for depth and thought-provoking, though somewhat cryptic lyrics.T here's very few contenders to the hard rock crown in the limelight anymore, but The Joy Formidable are definitely, unquestionably, up there. Their sets are often bombastic displays of intense rock riffery, inciting metal-horn flinging and downpours of shout-alongs. While their debut The Big Roar was an angular exercise in intelligent indie-rock, their 2013 sophomore, entitled Wolf's Law, was a prog. rock paradigm, thrashed with psych-nods and dips into extended instrumentals. Cathartic too, it dealt with loss, identity and home. Despite only numbering three in their ranks, the band manage to cultivate all these separate elements in their live shows, enabling raucous dance moments and reverent slow passages. It's a varied set they perform, but that will leave you looking the way Ritzy does when noodling away: beaming and slightly glazed-over.

There are very few bands who can boast to creating the same high volume sonar spaces as Welsh rock trio The Joy Formidable. One of Dave Grohl's personal favourite new artists and a huge hit in America, the shoe gazing alt-rock outfit have an incredible selection of tracks from their first two studio albums and remain criminally underrated in their homeland.
The music could easily fill stadiums as demonstrated during support slots for the likes of Muse and threatens to lift the roof clean off the intimate venues they are often confined to. There is great variation in the crunching, crushing 'A Heavy Abacus' with the lighter anthem 'Austere' via the spanning, cinematic 'This Ladder is Ours'. The music this band creates is absolutely staggering, I truly believe they are one of the most exciting rock outfits to break in a very long time so head to the shows before the rest of the world begin to share this sentiment and quickly sell out the tours.
Amazing show -- I'm still grinning from the opportunity to see TJF up close at such a small venue. The premium fan ticket was 100% worth it: got to chat with Ritzy, Rhydian, and Matt with about 20 other people, then enjoy a few acoustic performances before watching them do a sound check.
As you'd expect from TJF, the energy was palpable and the band was clearly having a great time. Lots of engagement with the audience to make it feel like a shared experience. Later in the show, Ritzy announced they were going to do something "extra weird". They came off stage into the crowd and performed an acoustic rendition of "Liana" to an audience member whom they'd learned was named Liana. That was a highlight. Especially for Liana, I suspect. :-)
Don't miss TJF if you get the chance to see them live.
The Joy Formidable band seemed to be very comfortable in the setting in Milwaukee. They were so fan friendly..They honored most of the audience requests. The pre-show V.I.P. acoustic show for a group of about 40 of us was a complete delite! And they gave us a free specially made CD as well. It was a great evening and got to meet and talk to them all after the show as well.
One of the more ridiculous shows I've ever been to. They were very talkative, the music was very loud, and they had lots of guitar solos. They also played an acoustic set as their first encore in the middle of the pit, and later handed a guitar to the crowd just to make noise with. Very crazy.
I love this band. They really know how to make a live show special. The songs are not direct replays of album cuts. Each night is a unique experience. Ritzy was sick and still played a memorable show. This is my fifth time seeing them and I will always come back for more!
The show was fantastic. It was a very intimate experience. The staff was polite and helpful. All and all we had a wonderful time. My only negative comment would be that there were two very intoxicated hecklers that needed to be asked to leave.
This was such a great show! The venue was awesome, small enough to be intimate but enough space so I didn't feel like canned tuna. They played an acoustic set, with plenty of songs from the new album as well as some familiar ones.
The band rocks! I had the opportunity to meet Ritzy and that was a joy. (No pun intended) ..She took the time to stop what she was doing to take a pic with me. And when the show started, it was nothing short of electric!
Played at the Fox Cabaret Vancouver. A night of crazy alt rock. Guitars were smashed and being played off the floor. Drum sticks were snapped during the encore and the remnants were given to the crowd (safely).

The Joy Formidable Announce Fall Tour Dates
Tickets for the tour will go on sale this Thursday, June 30 at 12 p.m. local time.
Celebrated Welsh, alt-rock band The Joy Formidable are excited to announce U.S. fall tour dates in support of their latest release, Into The Blue. The tour kicks off on September 3 in Austin, TX at Empire Control Room and hit markets such as New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and more.
The tour also includes festival performances at Riot Fest in Chicago on September 17 and Louder Than Life in Louisville, KY on September 25. The Joy Formidable will be joined by The Front Bottoms and Cuffed Up on select dates.
Tickets for the tour will go on sale this Thursday, June 30 at 12 p.m. local time, and a full listing of dates can be found below.
Into The Blue is available digitally and on limited edition colored vinyl via Enci Records in North America, Full Time Hobby in Europe and Soundly Distro in the rest of the world (order). Into The Blue is about opening your eyes to beauty & love again. Making it to the other side. The Joy Formidable's Ritzy Bryan says, "Whilst not conceived as a metaphor for the times we all live in now, it certainly turned out that way."
Into The Blue follows the band's kaleidoscopic 2018 album AAARTH, during which the band supported Foo Fighters on their North American tour, were invited by The Cure's Robert Smith to play his Meltdown Festival in London and Pasadena Daydream fest in LA, and they performed on the mainstage at Reading & Leeds Festival. The band's new album arrives into a much different world this time around, and birthed a new energy for the band. Even during the worst times, music will find ways to inspire & thrive.
Rhiannon (Ritzy) Bryan & Rhydian Dafydd grew up together in North Wales before forming The Joy Formidable in 2011. Soon joined by drummer Mr. Matt Thomas, they have enjoyed an eclectic decade together creating a legacy that spans genres & celebrates their Welsh culture. Today they split their time between North Wales and the closest thing they could find in the U.S. - "In the middle of nowhere" Utah.
Into The Blue is about surrendering to love and magic. Having the courage to enjoy a new journey and the mystery and excitement of something unexpected. The band says, "It's about opening your eyes to beauty and love again. Making it to the other side. Whilst not conceived as a metaphor for the times we all live in now, it certainly turned out that way."
This connection has flowed beyond the studio and into Joy Formidable's other creative passion, their community focused TJF Music Club. Launched in 2018, TJF Music gives fans access to exclusive music, online shows and much more, forging part of a much needed new culture of direct artist support which they hope other artists could follow to empower themselves. TJF Music Club has also become a cherished way of connecting with fans while touring has ceased and yet flourishes beyond.

Joy Formidable opens for Front Bottoms at Piere’s
Welsh trio joy formidable taking piere’s stage before front bottoms on sept. 20.
Anthony Gadson
If you have tickets to see The Front Bottoms at Piere’s on Sept. 20, you’re gonna want to arrive early.
Along with opening act Mobley, the hard-rocking alternative group The Joy Formidable will take the stage.
Back on the road
Formed in 2008, The Joy Formidable have always enjoyed being on the road, but their current tour is their first since December 2019. After nearly three years, the group is back in full force, playing 48 shows between Sept. 3 and Nov. 15.
“It really kind of smacks of making up for lost time,” lead singer Rhiannon “Ritzy” Bryan told Whatzup . “I’ve definitely missed touring, and I’m looking forward to going back out again. We had touring in 2020 that we postponed, then we postponed 2021, and some other things happened at the start of this year.”
The tour allows the band to promote their 2021 album Into the Blue , which was recorded in a new way.
“Even though it came with its challenges, because we weren’t even in Wales and were without (drummer Matthew James Thomas), so we had to do all the drums remotely, I loved making that record,” Ritzy said. “I felt like I got to step back a little bit more than I usually have, because I love touring so much. Normally, I’m in the moment (in the studio) and I want to make a record, but I’m also thinking about how I want to go play some festivals, I want to do this, so it becomes sort of a weave.”
Fitting right in
Finally able to get on the road, the band are making the most of it, headlining many shows, while also touring with The Front Bottoms, Mobley, and Tres Leches. They will also take some breaks to play at festivals, including Riot Fest in Chicago on Sept. 17 and Louder Than Life in Louisville on Sept. 25.
The three-piece band, which also features bassist Rhydian Dafydd, have proved they can hang with the heaviest bands out there, but they enjoy playing for any crowd.
“We’ve played Riot Fest before, and they always have a great lineup, and I like being in Chicago,” Ritzy said of the festival that includes the likes of the original Misfits lineup, Nine Inch Nails, Ice Cube, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. “We’ve played a lot of festivals, and played some that we really don’t fit in with at all. I like it when festivals pick really eclectic lineups. It depends on what the vibe is for that particular festival, but it’s nice seeing quite eclectic lineup, and kind of challenging people to listen to something that they might not otherwise gravitate towards.”
Doing it themselves
The Joy Formidable have shown they can be something to almost everyone, bouncing from classic indie rock to heavy riffs, getting their start with 2008’s A Balloon Called Moaning . The self-released album was discovered by a label in Japan, who put them on tour, before it gained traction and made its way to the U.K. and U.S., where they signed with Black Bell Records.
“It was kind of an interesting first couple of years, because we did a lot by ourselves,” Ritzy said.
In 2010, they signed with an Atlantic subsidiary and released their official record, The Big Roar , which featured four songs from A Balloon Called Moaning . They have released five more albums on various labels.
“Looking back at all of our albums, I can kind of tell what was going on at that moment that led us to wanting to go in that direction, to make that sound, to make that kind of record,” she said. “I think that’s the lovely thing about the career we’ve had. It’s been quite free.”
On Into the Blue , a return to Wales, where they had not been in the studio since 2016, helped inspire the music.
“It’s nice just be in the moment,” Ritzy said.
Interacting with musicians
Back on the road, Ritzy says she’s eager to be among other artists, and isn’t worried about who might be getting the top billing.
“I like musicians coming together and enjoying each other’s company, rather than bringing in any kind of ego or competition,” she said.
And at the Piere’s show, there’s really no way to predict what you’ll hear, as Ritzy’s not even sure.
“I definitely swap up the set quite a bit, because I don’t like to get bored,” she said. “It’s been three years since we’ve been out in North America, playing live. We’ve got a set that kind of covers a little bit of everything at the moment.”
The Joy Formidable return to the state to headline a show at the Hi-Fi in Indianapolis on Oct. 31.
“North America, you guys do Halloween quite well,” Ritzy said of playing the Halloween show. “We don’t really make a big deal out of it in Wales. Maybe I need to think of something. Maybe I need to put it on my radar to make it a big deal.”

Wta: tears of joy in moscow – görges triumphs and overtakes kerber in the world rankings.
Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) has won the tournament in Moscow and thus completed her six-and-a-half year long dry spell on the WTA tour. The 28-year-old defeated Daria Kasatkina, a Russian local heroine, in the final match after just 68 minutes 6-1,6-2.
With her third victory in the tournament, Görges replaces the former industry leader Angelique Kerber as Germany’s number one in the tennis world rankings.
Görges, who lost this year’s finals of Mallorca, Bucharest and Washington and won her second and last tournament in Stuttgart in April 2011, will collect a cheque of 147,500 dollars (approximately 125,000 euros). Norddeutsche had its premiere success in Bad Gastein/Austria in 2010.
Görges started like the fire brigade, no sign of nervousness. In the first round, the world rankings-27. with a powerful and almost flawless game, her opponent, who was placed in a bad position, will not come into play. Görges only scored eleven points in the entire set and scored the round after 25 minutes.
In the second set, too, her opponent, who had celebrated her first tournament win in Charleston in the spring, did not rebel much. The young Russian had to accept that her opponent could not be defeated on this day. After Görges had finished the triumph with an ace, the tears of joy rolled over her cheeks.
Görges, who had meanwhile slipped out of the top 100, returns for the first time since the 18th century. In February 2013, she was once again among the top 20 players in the world. The two-time Grand Slam winner Kerber, who was still number one at the beginning of the year, loses her points from the WTA final 2016 in the new ranking on Monday and falls out of the top 20 again after five and a half years.
With her first tournament victory since Stuttgart in 2011, Görges is allowed to postpone her planned vacation by one week. The best German female tennis player of the season has qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. In the annual world rankings, Görges makes a leap from 28th to 18th place, and Angelique Kerber is now 19th in the Porsche Race to Singapore after finishing behind the electoral Regensburg rider.
Carina Witthöft will also reach for victory on Saturday. The 22-year-old from Hamburg will contest her first final on the WTA Tour in Luxembourg, opponent of the world rankings 73. is Olympic champion Monica Puig from Puerto Rico.

You treat it all like it won’t come again
You know what it means to leave leave too soon
You’re not the past and these streets unexplored
I get a chill I think I’ve met you before
You see every sun rise and sunset a message
Close my eyes I know nothing is setting
You know what it feels to leave
Leave too soon
Just hold on to me as the changes roll through
Stop when you know that it’s hurting you
Stop when your hope is lost for words
Tell yourself you know they’re not feeling you
Stop when you wake up lost
You treat it all like it won’t come again
You know what it means to brave
Brave the cold
I look across and these thoughts I’ve ignored
They keep us warm but don’t sleep anymore
I’m learning to see it all new again
I know what it means to leave leave too soon
I caught myself waking up
I get a chill I think I’ve met you
Oh stop where it goes
Grow with me across our thoughts
You see it all like it won’t come again
You see it all like it doesn’t end
