Mauritius may be a small island, but it’s absolutely packed with amazing things to do. One of the easiest ways to make the most of your trip is to do a tour.

Most Mauritius tours are one day only, so they can fit flexibly into your itinerary. You can go on an adventure one day and relax on the beach the next. Perfect!

Another great thing about doing a tour is that you can see most of the island without needing to hire a car.

Most tours also offer hotel pickups and drop-offs, making it super easy to get out of your resort and explore.

What’s more, you’ll get insider information and recommendations during your trip to Mauritius. Plus, activities and experiences you might not have come across otherwise.

So, which tours should you do? I’ve put together a guide of the most top-rated ones with a mix of adventure, nature, wildlife, culture and leisure to make it easier for you to choose.

All of these tours are small group to keep them as personalised as possible. Some of them have private tour options, but they tend to be a lot more expensive, so they might be better suited to a bigger group!

The best tours and day trips in Mauritius

Without further ado, here are the best ways to tour Mauritius Island.

Mauritius: Wild South West Full-Day Tour

Chamarel seven coloured earth surrounded by trees. It's a must visit location on your Mauritius tours.

  • Length: 8 hours
  • Highlights: Chamarel Waterfall, Seven Coloured Earth, Black River Valley, Grand Bassin

Celebrate the best natural sights, and scenery Mauritius has to offer on a wild landscape tour of the southwest. The great thing about this tour is that you can get picked up and dropped at any hotel on the island.

The itinerary is then a full day of sightseeing, starting at the volcanic crater Trou aux Cerfs with its panoramic views of Mauritius.

Next, you’ll visit the model ship factory in Curepipe and Grand Bassin, a sacred site for Mauritian Hindus – watch out for monkeys!

After a stop at the Black River Gorges National Park, you’ll have lunch and a rum tasting at La Rhumerie Chamarel and then visit what I believe is one of the top highlights of Mauritius – the Seven Coloured Earth.

Similar to Rainbow Mountain in Peru, this area of ground is a naturally occurring phenomenon with multi-coloured earth. It’s an incredible sight!

Make sure you take some time to see the famous cascading Chamarel Waterfall here too.

The last stop is Baie du Cap for a final breathtaking view on your tour.

This tour is small-group. There’s also a private tour version which you can do depending on the size of your group.

Full-Day Cruise to Ile aux Cerfs with BBQ Lunch Included

Ile aux Cerfs with boats and a view of Bambous Mountain behind in Mauritius.

  • Length: 7 hours
  • Highlights: 45-foot catamaran, Ile aux Cerfs, snorkelling, BBQ lunch

Enjoy the island life with a catamaran tour of Ile aux Cerfs.

This tour is perfect for those who want to combine adventure with relaxation as you can be as active or leisurely as you want – all with beautiful surroundings and possible dolphin sightings!

The catamaran cruise starts from Point Jerome on the east coast of Mauritius and sails to a quiet spot near the privately owned island of Ile aux Cerfs.

Here you’re treated to turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and an island with lush green vegetation to explore.

Spend the day swimming or snorkelling amongst the reef fish, sunbathing on the beach and relaxing onboard. You also have free time to enjoy the island independently.

A light breakfast and delicious BBQ lunch are provided, cooked up by chefs on board. Soft and alcoholic drinks are provided too.

Al boats have limited capacity, so it’s advisable to book this tour in advance to save your spot!

Dodo Trail Tour with Lunch

Pamplemousses Botanical Garden Mauritius - a girl wearing an orange dress standing in an avenue of trees.

  • Length: 8 hours
  • Highlights: SSR Botanical Garden, Port Louis

The Dodo Trail Tour starts in Port Louis, the capital city. From there you’ll see the best sights of the city from the harbour to the old citadel and Fort Adelaide.

As you work your way through the tour, you’ll spot important landmarks such as the Sait Louis Cathedral and Parliament. Next, you’ll be invited to look around a traditional market where you’ll see a colourful array of fruits and vegetables – and plenty of busy stalls.

The tour includes a traditional home-cooked Mauritian lunch at a private residence. Afterwards, the final stop is Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (SSR), otherwise known as Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.

It has an amazing collection of rare tropical plants from around the world and a large colonial house. Head to the ponds to see magnificent giant water lilies and a great photo spot!

Admission tickets to all sights are included in this Mauritius city tour price.

Quick fact: this tour is named after the dodo, a flightless bird which unfortunately went extinct sometime in the 1700s.

Blue Bay: Half-Day Snorkelling Trip with Creole Picnic Lunch

Shallow turquoise waters of Blue Bay Marine Park in Mauritius with boats on the water.

  • Length: 4 hours
  • Highlights: Blue Bay Marine Park, snorkelling, shipwreck, Creole lunch on a private island

Love snorkelling? Take a half day trip to Blue Bay Marine Park , a protected marine reserve on the south east coast. You don’t even have to get in the water to enjoy the marine life as the boat has a glass bottom!

Blue Bay Marine Park is the largest coral reserve in Mauritius. The tour starts at Blue Bay Public Beach in the southeast of Mauritius.

From there you’ll sail into the turquoise lagoon with stops including an old shipwreck which you can see in the water or from the boat.

Next, you’ll head to Ile de Deux Coco, a private island, where a chef will serve up a delicious Creole curry lunch and you can enjoy a selection of soft and alcoholic drinks.

You’ll have some time to enjoy the private island before jumping back on the boat for one last snorkel stop before returning to Blue Bay Public Beach.

Mauritius: Tamarind Falls Highlights 3-Hour Hiking Trip

An aerial view of Tamarind Falls waterfalls surrounded by green hills. This hike is one of the best Mauritius tours.

  • Length: 3 hours
  • Highlights: Tamarind Falls, Rivière Tamarind, swimming

You can get a snapshot of what the wild island interior has to offer on this three-hour hiking trip to Tamarind Falls.

Make sure to bring some swimwear as you’ll have the chance to swim in some natural pools on the way!

This adventure tour starts at the Henrietta Bus Station and follows a trail walking through sugarcane fields to reach the entrance to a canyon.

After 30 minutes of walking through the canyon, you’ll come to the first of many stunning waterfalls. Here’s where you can stop, take a swim and cool off before finishing your hike at Tamarind Falls, the most beautiful waterfall of them all!

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off if you need it. You’ll also have a guide with you who will show you some of the animals and plants you’ll see on your hike. Remember your swimwear!

Mauritius: Full-Day Catamaran Cruise to the Northern Isles

Green hill of Gabriel Island in the north of Mauritius. Catamarans on the water in front.

  • Highlights: Three Northern Isles, snorkelling, dolphins, BBQ lunch

What’s an island holiday without a boat trip? This full-day catamaran cruise takes you north to the three Northern Isles with a chance to spot dolphins, whales and other marine life along the way!

The tour starts bright and early with tea and coffee at 8am at Grand Baie Public Beach. From there, you’ll sail over to Flat Island, where you’ll be able to explore or relax in the beautiful scenery before tucking into a BBQ lunch with amazing seafood.

After lunch, the next stop is Gabriel Island, where you’ll be able to sunbathe on its famous sandbar or go snorkelling in the crystal clear lagoon.

On your return journey, you’ll stop at Coin de Mare marine reserve and go on another snorkel before heading back.

Black River: Dolphin Swim and Whale Watching by Speedboat

A spinner dolphin leaping out of the water with Mauritius behind.

  • Length: 6 hours
  • Highlights: Swimming with dolphins, whale watching

Tick swimming with dolphins off your bucket list in an ethical way on one of the best Mauritius wildlife tours!

This excursion takes you on a speedboat to the Black River coast of Mauritius, where you’ll have the chance to see spinner and bottlenose dolphins as well as whales (don’t worry, you won’t be swimming with those).

You’ll be able to go snorkelling at some amazing coral reefs too!

The great thing about this tour is it’s a small group which means there will be no more than 8 people and 2 skippers. You’ll also get a briefing about how to respect and keep a safe distance from the dolphins you swim with.

On the second half of the tour, you’ll go whale watching and you have a 60% chance of seeing one.

Look out for resident sperm whales all year round and magnificent humpback whales from June to October!

Snorkelling gear per person and soft drinks are included in the price.

Mauritius: Le Morne Mountain UNESCO Eco Hike

View of the rocky and steap Le Morne mountain with a beach and sea below.

  • Length: 4 hours
  • Highlights: Scramble hike, panoramic views, learn about history and conservation

See Mauritius from on high by climbing Le Morne Mountain on this Eco Hike up a UNESCO World Heritage site!

One of the best eco tours in Mauritius, this thrilling adventure takes you 465 metres above sea level, where you’ll admire breathtaking lagoon views and learn about the island’s history.

Start the hike with a 4×4 car journey through private lands where you might spot wildlife such as deer, wild pigs and birds.

You’ll then begin on foot at the North-Western base of the mountain, which will warm you up for the next challenging phase.

At 340 metres above sea level, you’ll reach the first of the four scrambling/climbing sections. Don’t worry; you’ll get a safety briefing, and each stop offers panoramic views and photo opportunities.

Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with breathtaking views, and you’ll be able to take a well-earned break before you descend.

Heads up, this is a challenging hike with some scrambling and climbing bits so you’ll need a good level of fitness and stamina.

Make sure you’re wearing good footwear too. It might not be suitable for those who have a fear of heights!

Port Louis: Street Food Tour

View from above of colourful skyscrapers and buildings of Port Louis, Mauritius.

  • Length: 3 hours
  • Highlights: Delicious street food, local guide

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a culture is through food which is why I highly recommend this Port Louis Street Food Tour.

This half day tour will allow you to experience Mauritian culinary delights like a local. Your guide will take you through bustling streets to some of the best authentic food stops in the capital that a tourist is unlikely to come across.

Enjoy traditional feasts such as Indo-Mauritian “faratas” (fried dough bread) served with Creole “rougaille, Mauritian dumplings and Franco-Mauritian pastries.

There are eight tastings in total and each one highlights the diversity of Mauritian heritage and culture with its French, Creole, African, Indian and Chinese influences. Look out for the oldest patisserie in Port Louis too!

All food tastings and a bottle of water are included in the price.

Ile aux Aigrettes – Tea Route – Gris Gris Guided Day Tour

Mauritius tours aren't complete without a trip to Ile aux Aigrettes. Pictured, a giant tortoise surrounded by vegetation.

  • Highlights: Nature reserve, giant tortoises, tea factory and museum, lunch at Saint Aubin Colonial house

If you’re a nature lover, Ile aux Aigrettes is an absolute must-visit during your trip to Mauritius. Here, you’ll discover a wild island and protected nature reserve home to rare plants and animals, including the Giant Tortoise.

This full-day Mauritius tour takes you to Ile aux Aigrettes, where you can learn about the ongoing conservation projects on the island and hang out with the giant tortoises that roam free.

You can also find rare birds such as the Pink Pigeon and Mauritius Fody, so it’s a great choice for bird watchers!

Next, you’ll see another side to Mauritian heritage and culture: tea. A Bois Cheri Tea Factory, you’’ learn about the history and production of tea before winding your way through picturesque plantations to a tea-tasting chalet.

Enjoy a selection of teas, admire the views and try a few rum samples in the on-site shop before you leave.

The tour includes a local lunch at Saint Aubin Colonial House, that’s located in a beautiful garden. Finish off with a stop at Gris Gris Beach for dramatic cliff views.

The price of the tour includes hotel pickup, lunch, drinks and Ile aux Aigrettes and Bois Cheri entrance fees.

Pure Breaks Flexible Multi Day Tours

View from Sublime Point looking out towards mountains in the distance and the coastline. Pure Breaks an help you build the best Mauritius tours.

  • Length: From 7 days
  • Highlights: Fully flexible to you

Looking for a multi day tour on your Mauritius trip? Ethical travel company Pure Breaks offers bespoke self-guided itineraries for countries around the world – including this island.

They can help you build a tour featuring all the must-dos and best places to stay on the island. You can either drive it yourself or arrange a private transfer. Tours typically start from seven days.

Heads up, Pure Breaks tends to be slightly on the luxury end but prices are relatively reasonable depending on what you normally budget for.

Don’t forget travel insurance!

At the risk of sounding like a parent, it’s always a good idea to have travel insurance on the off chance something goes wrong when you visit Mauritius.

I currently use Holiday Extras because it has great plans – including electronics cover – at an affordable price point. I’ve recently used them for Mauritius and Jordan and got cheap cover for both!

Final Thoughts: The best Mauritius tours

Chamarel Waterfall in Mauritius surrounded by trees.

Mauritius has plenty of tours, excursions and day trips to suit a range of interests. Whether you would like to spend the day relaxing on a 45-ft catamaran, scrambling up a mountain or sampling the culinary delights of Port Louis, there’s something here for everyone.

I recommend booking in advance to save your spot as they do tend to get sold out fast.

The great thing is that most offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which gives you peace of mind if plans change.

Mauritian Wonders (3* Hotel)

I had a great time in Mauritius on this 7 night break. The tour operator was very helpful and kept in touch throughout, and the day trip incorporated into the main trip was very enjoyable with a lovely tour guide. Transfers from and to the airport went very smoothly with friendly. I also booked 3 additional tours through the tour operator, all of which showed me so many sides to the island in terms of History, demographics, core industries. The hotel was more run down than expected from their website but the room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful given I seemed to be the only solo traveller there. My key disappointment was in the quality of the taste of the food at the hotel; desserts were done very well but the flavours for starters and main courses were lacking. Also I found it unusual that there was no bottled water provided as a matter of courtesy. I felt initially confined to the hotel for food but eventually navigated the local bus system which is very good to get to the main town of Grand Baie. This would have been great information provided at the start of my trip. Mauritius is a fabulous island, the beaches are beautiful, the local people have a wonderful vibe, the weather was excellent. Big thanks to Nawfal and Vanessa (SummerTimes)

With its relaxing island vibes, plenty of history, culture, and buzzing nightlife, Mauritius offers tourists a wide variety of attractions for a full and authentic holiday experience.

Top 5 Things To Do in Mauritius

While the sparkling ocean and island vibes of Mauritius are alluring, there’s more to this tropical paradise than coconuts and snorkeling. Here are the top 5 attractions worth seeking out when you visit Mauritius:

1. Snorkel at Blue Bay, renowned for its remarkable coral garden, which harbors many species including butterfly fish, pendant coral fish, parrot fish and rainbow wrasse, providing tourists with views to a highly colored and splendid aquatic ballet.

2. Visit the idyllic town of Chamarel, which hosts sights of the Seven Colored Earth, dunes of volcanic earth that naturally take several shades, and the Chamarel Waterfalls.

3. Hike Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a dark history as a refuge for runaway slaves in the 18th century. An exceptional testimony to the resistance of slavery, this is not a site to be missed!

4. Immerse yourself in history at Eureka, Mauritius’ most iconic colonial mansion which demonstrates the impressive architectural prowess of the early 19th century and whose beauty has truly stood the test of time.

5. Go dolphin spotting at Tamarin Bay or Flic En Fac Beach. You’ll be taken out to the open sea at sunrise, where you can spot the dolphins and enjoy a refreshing swim with the magnificent creatures.

Best Time to Visit Mauritius

Just 20 degrees south of the equator, Mauritius offers tourists tropical sunshine throughout the year. The summer (October - March) is wetter than the winter months but if you’re looking to do some deep-sea fishing and scuba diving, then December - March is the best time to visit.

Mark Twain said, ‘Mauritius was made first, then heaven was copied from it’, and when you consider the natural beauty of the volcanic island, with it’s steamy forests and running streams, palm-fringed beaches and teeming coral reefs, it’s easy to understand his sentiment.

Mauritius Travel Guide

Most visitors to Mauritius choose package-tour holidays and stay at one of the island’s magnificent resorts. The capital, Port Louis, is the tourist hub of the island, but there are literally hundreds of excellent beach resorts lining the Mauritian coast. Most of the resorts sport luxury amenities such as golf courses and spas, and watersports like diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, sailing, and fishing.

The one drawback to a holiday in Mauritius is the long flight time for British and American visitors. This is a shame because those who do brave the journey will be richly rewarded by one of the world’s true island paradises, a place that somehow manages to be both comfortable and exotic, luxurious and pleasantly ‘off the beaten track’.

Best time to visit Mauritius

The climate in Mauritius is hot and tropical, tempered by cooling trade winds. Winters are warm and dry and summers are hot and humid, but the merciful sea breezes keep things from ever getting too unbearable. Mauritius can be visited at any time of year, though bear in mind that it rains heavily from January to March and that this is also cyclone season. The peak tourist season in Mauritius is from October to April, so if you’re planning on visiting during this period be sure to book accommodation well in advance.

What to pack

Make sure you have a small backpack with you to take on day excursions, and always carry plenty of bottled water around. Pack sturdy shoes to protect your feet on some beaches, as there is a threat of sharp coral and stonefish stings.

What to buy

Carved wooden figurines, home-made jewellery, perfumes made from essential oils, hand-woven rattan bags, and local spices all make great souvenirs.

Creole rougailles, spicy biryanis or tandoori curry dishes are common mains, with gateaux or traditional Indian sweets for dessert.

A final word

An enticing and exotic destination, Mauritius is a great choice for an island getaway packed with brilliant sunshine, beautiful beaches, and unbeatable outdoor activities.

DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT TO MAJOR BEACH AREAS: 45-60 minutes TIME ZONE: GMT +4 hours CURRENCY: The Mauritius Rupee (MUR). It’s sensible to order currency in advance of your trip, but ATMs are widespread on the island LANGUAGES: English is generally accepted as the official language

PGA Championship: How players reacted to fatal accident, Scottie Scheffler’s arrest

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - MAY 17: Scottie Scheffler of the United States reacts before teeing off on the tenth tee during the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on May 17, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Austin Eckroat and his wife awoke to rain and darkness Friday before departing for Valhalla Golf Club and Day 2 of the PGA Championship. They were about 2 miles away when the fourth-year pro received a text about a nearby traffic delay. Suddenly, they were in it, with no movement in either direction.

“I pulled up the local news station trying to figure out what was going on, and the first thing I saw was Scottie (Scheffler) had been put in handcuffs,” he said. “I was like, What in the world is going on?”

Many competitors shared that sentiment after concluding Friday’s second round. Some had no idea why Scheffler had been arrested or that the delay stemmed from a fatal accident: John Mills, who was working the tournament, was struck by a shuttle bus just outside the entry gates and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scheffler, according to the arrest report, was traveling eastbound when he attempted to steer his black Range Rover courtesy car into the westbound lane. Detective Bryan Gillis tried to stop the vehicle but Scheffler continued forward, according to the report, “dragging Detective Gillis to the ground” and causing injuries that required medical treatment.

Scheffler was arrested and taken to the local precinct, where he was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. A court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

“It was very strange coming into the course this morning, not the normal quiet arrival,” Harris English said. “Obviously, got here this morning, then news broke that Scottie had been detained and all that. We had no idea what was going on. That could have been any one of us. We’re all taking that same route coming into the club. … It’s a lot of traffic cones and not really knowing what lane you’re going to be in. Definitely a little bit more hectic than we’re used to getting into the golf course; dark, raining, it’s hard to see anyway and you’ve got a lot of lights around, you’ve got a lot of people yelling and pointing and all this stuff. It was very chaotic.”

Will Zalatoris faced a different type of chaos after he left his rental house at 6:15 a.m. Sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the Dallas native said he received word that Scheffler’s arrest caused the stoppage. He decided to exit his vehicle and walk to the course instead, leaving the keys with his wife. Zalatoris ultimately joined Eckroat, Cameron Young and a group of PGA club professionals in a 2-mile walk to the club’s gates. They approached security at the entrance on foot.

“When we got there, they told us to go to Gate 4. We told them we were players, but they didn’t know. They’re used to seeing the courtesy cars and we’re showing them our badges. They didn’t know what an all-access player badge was,” Zalatoris said. “They had to figure out a way to let us in.”

The commotion didn’t stop once players arrived on site. Players received notice of the postponement of the round at 6:16 a.m. via text message, but the PGA of America did not provide a further update until 7:40 a.m. Play eventually was delayed one hour and 20 minutes, to 8:35 a.m.

let's go tours mauritius

Collin Morikawa, who shot a 65 on Friday to move into contention, spoke of the confusion and the challenge of focusing on the round ahead.

“We didn’t really know what time we were teeing off,” he said. “I had pretty much gone through my whole warmup in the physio room, and then there was the delay, the hour delay, and they kept pushing it back. You kind of take it all in, and talking amongst all the players and caddies and physios and our little bubble in there — it’s just wild. Turn on ESPN and seeing Scottie in handcuffs, getting in a police car, I never would have thought I would have seen that this morning. It was just wild. But again, you had to lock in.”

Others felt the same but acknowledged it was difficult.

“I was a bit shook about what happened on both the scenarios,” Min Woo Lee said of Scheffler’s arrest and Mills’ death. “I mean, during the round it was even hard to just concentrate. I had to make sure to keep my head in the game because I wouldn’t want that to happen to anyone, and yeah, obviously what happened to Scottie was very scary, too.”

Lee, who has a large following on social media, had the immediate instinct to take his thoughts public when he learned of Scheffler’s detainment. He thought the situation was an “overreaction” and described that in a simple tweet: “#FreeScottie” the post read. It has garnered more than 26,000 likes.

#FreeScottie — Min Woo Lee (@Minwoo27Lee) May 17, 2024

The two-word phrase had already been circulating on social platforms, but it quickly made its way around the grounds of Valhalla, too. The Louisville spectators shouted in support of Scheffler throughout his round, with some even printing his mugshot onto T-shirts to wear to the course.

Fans may have focused on Scheffler, but many of the players were equally concerned about Mills and his family. Each of those who spoke went out of their way to recognize the loss of life.

“I don’t think that’s getting talked about enough, or at all,” Morikawa said. “My wishes and prayers are within that family’s blessings.”

Said Mark Hubbard: “I thought the saddest part was that the whole thing was about Scottie getting arrested and all that — and like I said, I’m glad he’s doing OK and everything — but, I mean, someone died this morning. And (while) we were out there on the course, like, I bet 90 percent of the people out here don’t even know that that happened. That’s not Scottie’s fault at all, but it’s just, I mean, that was the real tragedy today.”

Hubbard was asked what message he can take from that.

“It’s a weird world we live in,” he said. “With social media, I think the important stuff can kind of get lost sometimes. I don’t really know how to fix it. I don’t know what the overall message is. It’s sad that that happened, and my heart goes out to that family.”

Scottie Scheffler arrested for allegedly assaulting officer near fatal crash while on way to PGA Championship

Updated on: May 17, 2024 / 8:45 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler  was arrested by police in Louisville on Friday morning on his way to the PGA Championship, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was led to a police car and charged with assaulting an officer after allegedly attempting to drive around traffic backed up from a pedestrian fatality investigation. Scheffler was released later in the morning and continued competing in the tournament.

Police said Scheffler was booked for second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. In a statement to CBS News, Scheffler's attorney Steve Romines said the golfer "never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle" and added that "we will litigate this matter as needed."

In a statement posted to Instagram , Scheffler said he was in a "very chaotic situation."

"There was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," Scheffler said. "I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."

Police said a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic. Police said the man died at the scene, CBS affiliate WLKY  reported . Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla Golf Club, with dozens of police cars flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, later started the second round shortly after 10 a.m. EDT. After finishing Friday's round, Scheffler told reporters he wouldn't discuss specific details about the incident, but he said he didn't know at the time that the accident ahead of him in traffic was fatal.

"I feel like my head's still spinning," Scheffler said. "I can't really explain what happened this morning. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell — that was a first for me."

Scheffler expressed confidence that the charges would "get resolved, I think, fairly quickly."

Why was Scottie Scheffler arrested?

According to a police report, Scheffler was in an eastbound lane and pulled into the westbound lanes, where a uniformed detective was standing. The detective stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him instructions, but Scheffler "refused to comply and accelerated forward," according to the report.

The detective, identified as Det. Gillis, was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist," according to the report.

The detective was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler's car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The Louisville Metro Police Department said that all lanes were closed during the traffic fatality investigation.

"While an officer was directing traffic, an encounter with a motorist attempting to make entry into a restricted area ultimately led to the driver being arrested," the police said in a statement. "We are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. We are appreciative that all parties involved are fully cooperating."

Romines said Scheffler was driving a marked player's vehicle and proceeding as he'd been instructed.

"I think the officer that was directing traffic was maybe not part of the event traffic detail and so that's where the miscommunication arose, and that's why we're here," Romines told WLKY.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington said he watched this unfold with Scheffler driving past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV. He said police pulled Scheffler out of the vehicle, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

In this still image made from video provided by ESPN, Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is escorted to a police car after being handcuffed near Valhalla Golf Club, the site of the PGA Championship golf tournament, early May 17, 2024.

"Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, 'Please help me,'" Darlington said. "He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively."

Darlington said whole the incident started with a "misunderstanding with traffic flow."

With cars backed up in the morning darkness, other PGA-marked vehicles tried to move slowly toward the entrance. Traffic finally began to move slowly a little before 7 a.m.

A spokesperson for the PGA of America identified the man who was struck by the shuttle bus as John Mills. In a statement, the PGA's Greg Dillard said Mills, a worker with one of the group's vendors, was going to work when he was hit.

"This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship," the PGA said in a statement. "We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear conveyed his condolences on social media , saying, "Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim's family."

"The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution," Beshear said.

Scheffler also expressed his sympathies for the man who died.

"It truly puts everything in perspective," Scheffler said on social media.

The website for the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections briefly showed a booking photo of Scheffler before the photo was removed. According to the website, Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m.

Scottie Scheffler is seen in a police booking photo May 17, 2024.

Did Scottie Scheffler play today?

Scheffler returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted "free Scottie!"

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range. Then he went out and made a birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to three feet. Scheffler finished Friday's round two strokes behind leader Collin Morikawa at nine strokes under par for the tournament, CBS Sports reports .

It was a surreal start to what already has been a wild week of weather — the Masters champion and top-ranked in the world, dressed in workout clothes with his hands in cuffs behind his back amid flashing flights.

Darlington said police were not sure who he was. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, "There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail."

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scottie Scheffler of the United States plays his shot from the 12th tee during the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on May 17, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments. He was home in Dallas for the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son who was born on May 8.

"I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning," Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 Friday that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship. He is seeking to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

Last month, Scheffler won his second  Masters Tournament  victory in three years, finishing 11 under and four strokes up on his closest competitors.

How to get from Mauritius Airport to your hotel?

First and foremost, you might also be wondering how to get from Mauritius Airport to your hotel.

The best way to get from the airport to your hotel is to pre-book a private airport transfer here . It’s sometimes cheaper to book online as opposed to booking directly at the airport, plus the driver will already be waiting for you with your name written on a sign.

CLICK HERE TO BOOK A PRIVATE AIRPORT TRANSFER

Unless your hotel is located in Mahebourg, I don’t recommend taking the bus as it will be very time-consuming.

Plus, it isn’t the most comfortable way of getting to your hotel, especially if you’re traveling with lots of luggage which is why I recommend pre-booking your airport transfer instead.

How to get around Mauritius Island?

The best way of getting around Mauritius is by car as you’ll have more flexibility to explore at your own pace instead of being tied to schedules.

Some of the main tourist attractions in Mauritius like Chamarel Seven Colored Earth ,  Alexandra Falls viewpoint , or Black River Gorges  aren’t accessible by public bus, so renting a car will be your best bet.

Car rental in Mauritius is very affordable, plus British, French, and South African nationals can use their local driver’s license to drive in the country.

You can read my detailed guide to driving in Mauritius which includes my top tips and everything you need to know such as the requirements for renting a car, road conditions, speed limits, updated gas/petrol prices, parking, etc.

If you’d like to rent a car in Mauritius, I recommend booking through Discover Cars as it allows you to compare the rates of different car rental companies (both local and international) so you get the best deal.

Another advantage of using Discover Cars is that you can also purchase full insurance coverage for about US$ 7 per day which can be used on top of the insurance provided by the car rental company if you want extra peace of mind.

If you’re wondering how to get around Mauritius on a budget, the best option is to use the public bus.

The bus network in Mauritius is quite extensive and travels to almost all towns and villages, except for the places mentioned above.

Buses in Mauritius generally operate from 5.30 a.m to 8 p.m at 10-minute to 1-hour intervals.

As of 2023, a single bus ticket costs between Rs 17 and Rs 44 (slightly more for air-con or Express buses) which is about USD 1, depending on the distance covered. Note that tickets can only be bought on board from the conductor.

While it’s very cheap to travel around Mauritius by bus, the main disadvantages are that journeys can be long and schedules are sometimes erratic. So if you’re in a hurry to get somewhere I would recommend traveling by car or taxi instead.

In case you can only afford to travel by bus, be sure to avoid the peak hours (7.30 a.m to 9.30 a.m and 4 p.m to 6 p.m). Most of the buses will be full at this time, plus you might get stuck in traffic.

Tip : If you’re traveling between Grand Baie and Port Louis for example, take the Express bus instead of the standard bus as the latter usually makes several stops in between resulting in long tiring journeys.

Another thing that makes traveling by bus in Mauritius somewhat challenging is that the bus routes and schedules aren’t available on Google Maps.

However, you can use this website  to get a rough idea of the different bus routes throughout the country. As for the schedule, it’s best to inquire directly at the bus terminal or simply ask a local.

Traveling by bus is definitely a great way to experience the local way of life and at the same time, take in the beautiful views along the small towns and villages.

If budget isn’t an issue, another viable option for getting around Mauritius is by private taxi.

Almost all hotels have their own taxi services but these are usually more expensive compared to independent taxis.

If you want to hire a taxi for the day to visit several attractions, you can book one here with an English, French, or German-speaking driver/guide. For an Italian-speaking driver/guide, you can book here instead .

Note that official taxis always have a yellow sticker on the side while tourist vans/buses have a blue sticker or their own company logo.

Never travel with an unofficial taxi as both you and the driver may have to pay a fine if you get caught by the police.

Those on a tighter budget can opt for a shared taxi instead. Prices are fixed and it costs about Rs 60 or less per person, depending on the distance covered.

For example, if you want to go from Flacq to Belle Mare, you can usually find shared taxis near the bus terminal here . Or if you want to travel from Flacq to Port Louis, the shared taxi stand is found here .

There is no Uber in Mauritius but there are a few local taxi apps that you can find online by doing a quick Google search. I’ve personally never used them as I’ve seen mostly mixed reviews but the option is there if you’d like to give it a try.

Tram (Metro Express)

The tram, commonly referred to as Metro Express, is another way to get around Mauritius Island.

It currently has 2 transit lines connecting the capital city of Port Louis to all towns in Mauritius, including some villages in between.

The main line runs between Port Louis and Curepipe while the other runs between Rose Hill and Reduit. You can have a look at this map to see the entire route.

Tickets can be bought at the station from the ticket machines and cost between Rs 35 and Rs 55 (slightly less if you have the ME Card).

Unlike the bus where only cash is accepted, you can pay for your metro ticket by cash and card.

The standard operating hours of the tram are from 6 a.m to 7 p.m daily at 10-minute intervals. As of 31 March 2023, the hours have been extended to 9 p.m on Fridays and Saturdays only (at 30-minute intervals from 7-9 p.m).

The main advantage of using the Metro Express is that it avoids most of the traffic, however, it doesn’t go to all the main tourist attractions.

The only time it would make sense to use the Metro Express as a tourist on a short trip to Mauritius would be if you’re planning to do some shopping at the Quatre Bornes market or visit Trou aux Cerfs in Curepipe.

Also, if you want to go to 7 Cascades by public transportation, you can take the tram from Port Louis to Quatre Bornes or Curepipe and then take a bus to the village of Henrietta.

Another way to get around Mauritius is to rent a scooter or motorbike although this isn’t my preferred mode of transportation as most accidents in Mauritius involve two-wheelers.

I wouldn’t recommend renting one unless you’re very experienced and are confident that you can handle the roads, especially those around Chamarel and Chamouny which are quite curvy and steep.

Note that it’s mandatory to wear a helmet when driving a scooter or motorbike. If you’re driving after dark, you’ll also need to wear a reflective jacket.

If you’d like to explore beyond Mauritius to Rodrigues Island , which by the way features so many incredible places like the pristine white-sand beach of Trou D’Argent, François Leguat Reserve, or Mont Limon, you can take a 1.5-hour flight with Air Mauritius.

Flights are available 4 times a day and cost around USD 225 for a return ticket.

Another option for traveling between Mauritius and Rodrigues is by sea. You can refer to this website to check the schedule.

Organized Tours

Finally, if none of the above works for you, you can simply book an organized tour like this highly-rated private southwest tour of Mauritius which includes visits to Chamarel, Black River Gorges, Grand Bassin, Trou aux Cerfs as well as hotel pick-up and drop-off, and an English, French, or German-speaking guide.

Hi Steph, Nice, useful and informative article. Thank you :)

I will be travelling to the island in a couple of months – quick question about the bus, how do I distinguish between the regular bus and the express bus? Seperate bus stops or the same?

Thank you :) You’ll know that it’s an express bus as you’ll see “Express” or “EXP” written along with the bus route and number. Although sometimes they might only have the bus route and number written. If you’re at a bus terminal, the express bus might be at a different location so it’s best to ask there. Hope this helps :)
