CITY TOUR INCLUDES: Panoramic view of the  "Pyramid of Pucllana - Main Square of Lima - Government Palace -  Cathedral - Archbishop's Palace - Guided visit to the monastery of Santo  Domingo and the larco herrera Museum. 

Early in the morning, after breakfast we will have the transfer to Paracas located south of the city of Lima where we will have the excursion to the Ballestas Islands and we will meet the Paracas culture, a pre-Inca culture. 

Overnight in Nasca

Early in the morning, after breakfast we will start the excursion to the enigmatic Nasca Lines in an overflight that will take approximately 1 hour.

After the overflight transfer to the city of Arequipa.

Arrival to the city of Arequipa and transfer to your hotel.

Morning at Leisure

PM. City tour around Arequipa city. We will visit the main square, the cathedral, the Campiña and the volcano viewer

AM. Very early in the morning we will beging our tour to the colca valley on way we will view some vicuñas and volcanos.

Lunch included.

Overnight in Colca.

Today we will go to the Cruz del Condor which is a place to see the condors flying in the Colca Canyon.

PM. Transfer to Puno City

FD.  Excrusion to the world’s highest navigable lake,  Lake Titicaca. Visit to the Uros floating islands and Taquile island, a  peaceful place where old Quechua traditions live in perfect balance with  modernity.  

AM. Early in the morning transfer to the train station to take the train to Cusco city (Meals and folkloric shows Included) 

PM. Arrival to Cusco city and transfer to the hotel

After lunch (Lunch not included)

City tour around Cusco city. We will visit the main square, the cathedral, the Qoricancha temple, the arqueological place of tambomachay and Sacsayhuaman

Full day tour to the sacred valley of the Incas. Pisac, Coya, Lamay, Calca, Yucay and Urubamba. PM. Lunch Time! At Don Angel Restaurant. (Buffet Lunch Included) Visit to Ollantaytambo, one of the most important places in the sacred valley and Chincheros 

Today we will visit the community of Cuper Bajo, a community located on the shores of Piuray Lake, where we will learn about their daily life and the crops they grow. We will taste a delicious pachamanca.

In the afternoon together with the Shaman of the village we will learn a little about the ancestral mysticism, we will have a ritual to eliminate bad vibes and channel positive vibes. We will learn about the coca leaf and he will tell us the message that the coca leaf has for us.

  AM. Transfer to the train station to take the train to Machu Picchu (Snacks aboard) Excursion to Machu Picchu Train back to Cusco city and tranfer to your hotel.

Juanita Mummy Arequipa: The Incan Ice Maiden

The Juanita mummy is a must while exploring Arequipa, Peru’s second-largest city. A statement that has rung true for decades but one that has recently become more widely known, as Juniata was thrust back into the public eye in October of last year when archaeologists revealed a model showing what Peru’s most famous mummy would have looked like.

At the end of 2023, team Aracari visited the Juanita mummy. The experience was so impactful, that it made it onto our list of ten of the best places to see in South America for 2024 . But as the site becomes ever more popular how do you get a visit to the Andean Sanctuaries Museum (where Juanita is displayed), just right?

Arequipa: Home of the Juanita Mummy

Since Aracari’s inception in 1996, the city of Arequipa in southern Peru has held a special place in our hearts. Found in the shadow of the mighty Mista volcano – Arequipa is dubbed “the white city” because of its iconic cityscape. Many of the colonial-style buildings here are made from sillar, a kind of chalky volcanic stone – a unique aesthetic that formed part of the case for Arequipa to become a World Heritage City, a status awarded by UNESCO in 2000. There’s also a budding foodie scene, fantastic bars – and of course, plenty of culture.

Who is the Juanita Mummy, Arequipa?

Discovered atop Ampato Mountain in 1995, in the Andes of Southern Peru, Juanita is not a mummy but a frozen 12-year-old Inca girl who was sacrificed to the gods in the 1450s. Considered the best-preserved of all the Inca ‘mummies’ in the Andes , Juanita is an incredible representation of what it meant to be an Incan sacrifice.

It would have been a true privilege of the parents for their child to be selected as a sacrifice. Juanita – like other human sacrifices – would have been led up the cold mountain with priests before being sacrificed, carrying with them the likes of coca leaves, food, and offerings that formed part of this ritual. Juanita herself would have been dressed in her finest, for what was a highly symbolic ritual for the Gods. When she was discovered, she was bundled with burial items that would have accompanied her, including miniature llamas.

The child was wrapped up before the sacrifice, and due to the altitude likely very cold. Ultimately it was a blow to her head that was the cause of death. While this sacrificial ritual may have represented honor, natural human instinct likely kicked in at the last moment and you can see her hand grasping her own arm!

 The Discovery of Juanita Mummy

Juanita had been buried on the mountaintop, and were it not for a volcanic eruption, she would likely have not been found. The result of volcanic activity caused the snowcap to melt, revealing her burial site and causing Juanita to fall out and effectively roll down the hill in her frozen state.

This is the reason why one side of Juanita is better preserved than the other, as she would have tumbled down ending up on one side. Furthermore, when her burial site was disturbed, she was still frozen. The fact she was discovered relatively quickly (by an anthropologist, whom she is named after) meant she hadn’t defrosted – and thus today at the Andean Sanctuaries Museum in Arequipa visitors have a chance to see such a well-preserved Incan sacrifice.

Located only about a block from the Plaza de Armas is the Andean Sanctuary Museum, home to the ‘mummy’ Juanita. Discovered atop Ampato Mountain in 1995, in the Andes of Southern Peru, Juanita is in fact not a mummy but a frozen 12 year old Inca girl who was sacrificed to the gods in the 1450s.

The Andean Sanctuary Museum is a small intimate museum found nearby to the Santa Teresa Monastery . Established in 1996, the primary aim of the museum was to conserve the archaeological artifacts from the High Sanctuaries of the South Andean project – making it the ideal home for Juanita mummy who has been discovered in the previous museum.

Climate & Weather

Arequipa is in a fertile valley surrounded by high-peaked mountains. But the broader region sits on the edge of the driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert. A couple of hundred miles from the city, in the Cotahuasi area, altitudes range from 3,000 feet to 20,000 feet (and above) and encompass nineteen ecological zones. If you venture out to the mountains and highlands around Arequipa, expect stronger sun and winds during the day and significantly cooler temperatures at night.

In terms of weather, Arequipa has plenty of sunny days that are typical of high desert climates and temperatures moderated by the city’s 7,660 feet (2,335 meters) elevation. Daytime temperatures are usually around 65°F (18°C), rarely going below 50°F (10°C) or rising above 77°F (25°C). Nights can dip down to 45°F (7°C).

The Andean rainy season extends from December to March. In Arequipa, this means cloud cover and light showers in the evenings. The month of February is the exception, and heavy rains are frequent.

Best Time to Visit

The city of Arequipa enjoys around 300 days of sunshine each year. The best time to visit Arequipa is anytime from April to November when the weather is pleasant. Conditions are sunny with blue skies, and daytime temperatures are mild. The region’s high altitude and plenty of sun produce high risk for sunburn, so stroll the streets of Arequipa wearing a hat and high SPF sunscreen.

If you plan to add Colca Canyon to your Arequipa itinerary, the best time to plan your trip is from May to November. These months are the dry season in Colca Canyon, which coincides with beautiful weather in Arequipa too. One of the highlights of visiting Colca is spotting Andean condors, and chances of seeing them outside the dry season is much lower.

Geography & Map

• Arequipa is situated in the middle of fertile valleys irrigated by meltwaters from the surrounding mountain peaks. Three volcanoes - Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu - stand guard over the city and remind you of the region’s seismic activity.

Archeological evidence shows that 1,000 years before the arrival of the Inca civilization, the Aymara indigenous groups inhabited the Arequipa region. According to oral traditions, the settlement was known by a name meaning “summit behind the peak” in reference to the Misti Volcano. In the Aymara language, “ari” means “summit” and “quipa” means “lying behind.”

Much later, in the year 1300 AD approximately, the fourth Sapa Inca, Mayta Capac, arrived with his entourage from the kingdom of Cusco. Legend has it that the name Arequipa arose when the Inca ruler, after admiring the lush valley protected by grandiose mountain peaks, said, “ari, quepay,” which in Quechua means “yes, let us stay.”

After the arrival of European conquistadors to Peru (and the military defeat of the Inca Empire in Cusco ), the Spanish settler Garcí Manuel de Carbajal re-founded the city in 1540. It is this date that is commemorated with great fanfare during the Fiestas de Arequipa in August, which consumes the entire city and attracts travelers from other parts of Peru.

From the 16th and 18th centuries, under Spanish colonial rule, Arequipa flourished in the crossroads for the silver trade. The city’s architectural aesthetic began to take form during this time when white sillar stone, abundant in the Arequipa region, was used as the primary material to build the casonas of large landowners, beautiful churches, and sprawling convent complexes including Santa Catalina.

What to Pack

As with any of Peru’s high altitude destinations, the key to packing for Arequipa is to plan to dress in layers. Mornings are cold, and you’ll want to start the day with outer layers that you can remove as the day warms up. Remember to wear sunscreen, as Arequipa experiences intense high solar radiation as a result of high altitude. If you venture out to the mountains and highlands around Arequipa, expect stronger sun and winds during the day and significantly cooler temperatures at night.

How to Get to Arequipa

By plane: Arequipa’s Manuel Ballon International Airport (airport code: AQP) has regular connecting flights to/from:

• Lima to Arequipa - nonstop 1 hour 30 minute flight
• Arequipa to Cusco - nonstop 1 hour flight

By bus: Arequipa has two major bus stations, Terminal Terrestre and Terminal Terrapuerto, which are adjacent to one other and 2.5 mi (4 km) from the Plaza de Armas. For long-distance travel between Arequipa and Cusco, Puno, or Lima, the best and safest option is to look for non-stop overnight routes with companies such as Cruz del Sur, Oltursa, or Exclusiva.

Getting from Arequipa to Colca Canyon

The 100-mile (160-km) drive from Arequipa to Chivay, the gateway to Colca Canyon, takes about three hours in private transport and longer by public bus. Booking a Colca Canyon Tour with roundtrip van transport from Arequipa is convenient and a nice option for visiting top attractions in the canyon. The paved road connecting Arequipa with Colca Canyon passes through La Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve , a protected high altitude environment with volcanoes, lagoons, and herds of wild vicuna.

Plaza de Armas Arequipa

The Plaza de Armas in Arequipa is one of the fairest in all of Peru. Local people come to socialize and read newspapers under the shade of palm trees, children throw seeds on the ground for birds, and travelers from all over the world come to gape at the towering Basilica Cathedral and make wishes at Tuturutu Fountain in the center of the square.

Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa

The stately Basilica Catedral (or Catedral de Arequipa in Spanish) anchors the northeast corner of the Plaza de Armas. What you see of the cathedral today is the product of nearly 500 years of construction and reconstruction resulting from a dramatic history of strong earthquakes. The restoration finished during the 1850s and many imports, such as the English clock for the clock tower, a neo-Gothic pulpit, and a Belgian organ, which remains the largest organ ever to cross the ocean to South America.

The Museum of Andean Sanctuaries is home to Juanita, the Inca Ice Maiden, one of the most famous historical residents in Arequipa. Juanita is believed to have been a sacrificial offering by Inca priests to the volcano Mount Ampato, where she remained buried in snow for over 500 years. Casa del Moral

History and architecture buffs can quickly lose track of time at Casa Del Moral. This well-preserved 18th-century mansion is one of the oldest existing buildings from the city’s Baroque architecture period. This former private residence is named after the old mulberry tree (arbol de moras) in its courtyard. Visitors pay a small entrance fee and can explore the site independently or with a guide.

Mirador Yanahuara

You can see the historic center of Arequipa from above with a visit to this famous lookout point in the Yanahuara district. Elegant stone arches are carved with the prose and poetry of Arequipa’s many notable writers and also provide perfect frames for photos of El Misti. It is a local tradition among young lovers to go to Mirador de Yanahuara to pledge eternal love and affection with the Lord of Arequipa (Misti) as a witness.

Museum of Contemporary Art in Arequipa

For a refreshing interlude between visits to historical and archeological sites, visit Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Arequipa (MACA). It is one of the few modern art museums in all of Peru with a collection that includes canvas paintings, sculptures, watercolors, and cartoons, as well as photographs by the Arequipa-born brothers Carlos and Miguel Vargas. Once you’ve gotten your art fix, relax in the garden, or have a drink and snacks in a cafe in a repurposed train car.

Mundo Alpaca

Everywhere you go in Peru, you’ll see alpaca scarves, sweaters, and gloves for sale. In Arequipa, go to Mundo Alpaca where you can learn about the origins of these products, from the shearing of alpacas and vicunas , to spinning yarn, to weaving using centuries-old methods. At the end, you can tell the difference between our alpaca products and those made with synthetic material.

Volcano Trek

Arequipa is located directly over one of the tectonic fractures that have created the Andes over millennia. Between the city and Colca Canyon, there’s no shortage of volcanoes to climb.

Many trekking providers organize one to three day climbs to nearby volcanoes, including the iconic Misti. Summiting the 19,101-foot (5,822-meter) peak of El Misti is not technically challenging, but the extreme elevation and sandy footing along the way make it hard. The best time for mountain climbing near Arequipa is from July to September.

The volcanoes are within the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. Drive times to each volcano vary, but Misti, for example, is approximately two hours away by car.

Take a Trip to the Countryside

During the colonial period, wealthy landowning families had grand casonas in the city center and sprawling haciendas out in the countryside. You can see what life was like for the Arequipa elite when you venture into the countryside, 15 to 20 minutes outside of the city. Key sites include Molino de Sabandia, an old water mill, and the restored La Mansion del Fundador which belonged to Arequipa’s founder Don Garci Manuel de Carvajal.

Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca

The road from Arequipa to Colca Canyon travels through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve (or, La Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca in Spanish in Spanish. It is one of the region’s underrated, yet spectacular destinations, providing vistas of volcanoes, lagoons, wetlands, and unique flora and fauna that thrive in the extremely high altitude environment.

Departing from Arequipa, tours to Colca Canyon begin with a drive northeast through the reserve towards the volcanoes Chachani and Misti. After about two hours, stop at Pampa Cañahuas to observe wild vicuñas and later snap photos from the outlook of Patapampa (4,820 meters) before beginning the descent into the Colca Valley.

The national reserve extends over an area of 367,000 hectares. The drive from Arequipa to Chivay in the Colca Valley takes about 3 hours by car.

Colca Canyon

Leave the streets of Arequipa behind and venture to Colca, the second deepest canyon in the world. (The deepest canyon is nearby Cotahuasi). Plummeting valleys shadowed by volcanic peaks, thermal hot springs, and quaint communities are all part of Colca’s charm. Mirador Cruz del Condor is a viewing platform where you can spot flying condors with an 8-foot wingspan and the ultimate highlight of a Colca Canyon tour. Cotahuasi Canyon

Explore Cotahuasi, the world’s deepest canyon. At its deepest point, the canyon cuts roughly 11,003 ft (3,354 m) into the earth - only slightly deeper than the nearby Colca Canyon - and it extends for 63 mi (100 km). Two peaks, Coropuna and Solimana, rise to 20,000 ft (6,100 m).

The majestic Cotahuasi Canyon provides a compelling alternative for travelers who wish to avoid the big tour groups that flood Peru’s more famous destinations. It takes some effort to get here, which perhaps accounts for the low visitor numbers. Travelers should be prepared for basic services and facilities in the tiny towns and villages that dot the canyon. In exchange, you’ll get to see places of surreal beauty.

Day 01: Arrival to Lima

Arrival to the city of Lima, there are no planned activities. When you arrive at the airport, please seek your name, a representative will wait for you and will take you to the hotel.Known as the City of Kings, Peru’s capital city Lima was founded by Francisco Pizarro on the Day of the Three Kings (Epiphany) in 1535. The Plaza de Armas is the heart of old Lima, and it is here you find the Cathedral, Government Palace and Archbishop’s Palace.

Day 02: Flight to Cusco

Start the Peru Treks and Adventures . Transfer to the airport for the flight to Cusco (the flight usually departs early). In Cusco you meet your guide and get transferred to your hotel. The day is free to relax and explore the fascinating city of Cusco, and to acclimatize to the altitude.

Cusco is the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city, and the hub of the South American travel network. The city attracts travellers who come not just to visit a unique destination but also to experience an age-old culture very different from their 20th century way of life; one could easily spend a week just in and around the area. Inca-built stone walls line most of the central streets and you don't have to go far to see other major Inca ruins. It is a city steeped in history, tradition and legend.

Day 03: Sacred Valley tour

Travel with our local guide through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. An important source of food for the Inca, the Sacred Valley is a lush agricultural region that continues to supply the city of Cuzco with much of its produce. Visit the impressive Pisac ruins and the colorful artisan market (market days only). The day trip finishes in the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, site of another large Inca ruin. Here we catch our breath and prepare for the hike ahead. We spend the night in this small town before heading out for the start of the hike the next morning.

Day 04-07: Peru Treks - Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

The 4-day Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is physically challenging but worthwhile, and the excursion is within the ability of most reasonably fit. It is a 44-km (27 mile) hike, with 3 high passes to be crossed, one of which reaches an elevation of 4200m (13776 ft). The trail is often steep, and it may rain even during the dry season. The temperatures at night may fall below zero, so it is important to come prepared.

Peru Treks & Adventures is depart from Ollantaytambo to km 82 where we begin our walk in the footsteps of the Incas. Our local crew of porters, cook and guide provide us with everything we need for the duration of the hike. Porters carry the majority of the gear for the hike, so those passengers doing the hike only carry a small daypack with water, rain gear, snacks, a camera, etc. As you walk the trail that linked this ancient empire, admire breathtaking views at every step as we move from high plateau areas to dense cloud forest. Depending on the season, you may see a great variety of flora, including miniature and large orchids, and fiery rhododendron bushes.

You pass several smaller ruin sites, the first of which is Llactapata. The second day climb the long steep path to Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass. At 4198 m (13769 ft) above sea level, this pass is the highest point of the trek. The second pass of the hike is at 3998 m (13113 ft) where on clear days, we enjoy superb views of the snow-capped Cordillera Vilcabamba. The trail goes through some beautiful cloud forest on the gentle climb to the third pass, where you will walk through a causeway and a tunnel, both original Inca constructions. The highest point of the third pass is at 3700m (12136 ft). On clear days you are rewarded for all this work with beautiful views of the Urubamba Valley below. Soon you reach the serene ruins of Phuyupatamarca, or the 'Town above the Clouds', at about 3650 m (11972 ft) above sea level. We will camp either here or an hour and a half further along close to Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young) ruins, a grandiose terraced hillside site, with panoramic views of the valley below and just a short hike from Machu Picchu.

On the final day of the hike we climb the steps to the Sun Gate overlooking the peaks that surround Machu Picchu. When the morning is clear, there is no way to describe the feeling of the first views of Machu Picchu, as the mist rises off the mountains early in the morning and the famous site appears in front of you.

Machu Picchu is both the best and the least known of the Inca ruins. It is not mentioned in any of the chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors and archaeologists today can do no more than speculate on its function. The local Quechua farmers in the area knew of Machu Picchu for centuries, but it was not until an 11-year-old boy led the American historian Hiram Bingham (who was in search of Vilcabamba) to the site on July 24, 1911, that the rest of the world became aware of its existence. At that time the site was covered in thick vegetation, and Bingham and his team returned in 1912 and 1915 to clear the growth. Over the years, much work has been done on excavating and studying the site. Despite these efforts, many unanswered questions remain.

NOTE : Those passengers not able or interested in the hike spend 2 days in Cuzco, then travel by train to Aguas Calientes, where they overnight. Next morning they take the bus to the Machu Picchu entrance and rendezvous with the hikers at the ruins. If you decide not to do the hike we need to know prior to your departure in order to obtain train tickets. There is an additional fee for any changes made once Inca Trail permits are confirmed. This fee may vary depending on the changes that are made to your itinerary. Please advise your agent or Tierras Vivas. Also note that portions of the Inca Trail will be closed for general maintenance during the month of February each year. Also, closures may occur at various times throughout the year due to inclement weather or other conditions beyond our control. During these periods, any tour affected will hike the Lares Trek.

Day 08: Cusco

Cuzco is considered the mecca of Peru. This gorgeous colonial town offers nearby ruins, cobble-stoned streets, museums, churches and a lively atmosphere.

Every year Cuzco attracts thousands of travellers who come to delve into its noble but tragic past. It is the perfect base for optional explorations around the city and area as well as a range of outdoor activities. Relax and explore this fascinating city, and take time.

Cuzco’s numerous colonial churches are one of the city’s most common sights. The Cathedral was started in 1559 and took 100 years to build; it is also one of the city’s greatest repositories of colonial art. Immediately in front of the entrance is a vault containing the remains of the famous Inca historian, Garcilaso de la Vega. Also worth visiting are the churches of La Compañía, La Merced and San Francisco.

While most ruins are just outside of the city, the main ruin within is that of the Coricancha, once the Inca Empire's richest temple. Today the ruin forms the base of the colonial church of Santo Domingo. During Inca times this temple was literally covered with gold, but within months of the arrival of the first conquistadors this incredible wealth had all been melted down. It is left to the individual imagination to envision the magnificence of the original structure.

There are several good museums in Cuzco, including the Archaeological Museum, which also houses a small art museum, the Regional History Museum and the Religious Art Museum. Our best advice for exploring Cuzco is to wear a comfortable pair of shoes, arm yourself with a city map and set off to explore!

Day 09: Sightseeing bus to Puno

Tourist bus to Puno and will do South Valley (Sun route), the first stop is the San Pedro Church of Andahuaylillas is the major attraction for visitors and because of the quality of the art work is considered as the “Sistine Chapel” of America. It was constructed for the Jesuits at the end of the 16th and the princes of the 17th century. Its´ architectural structure is typical for small towns´ churches. Its´ walls are wide, typical for the colonial buildings, made with sun dried bricks of mud, a facade decorated with murals and two stone columns projected towards the main entrance. Although its´ architecture is relatively modest, the decoration of its´ interiors is the most impressive of the building.

After this we will continue to the old village of Pikillacta. This was one of the more impressive regional centers of the Wari culture, seated in Ayacucho, and which was occupied by the Incas through the years. Today it is a national archeological park of great importance.

The word Pikillaqta is a made up Quechua word, meaning lousy town (piki = lousy, llaqta = town), although it is also called “city of the fleas”. The constructions of Pikillacta exist of more than 200 kanchas (apartments), 504 golgas (warehouses) and other constructions. The city must have accommodated a population of approximately 10 thousand people.

Some investigators suggest that in the Inca times, Pikillacta was a city for “mitimaes” (groups of people or tribes who were being transferred from place to place). Then will go to Raqchi (the Temple of the God Wiracocha), a last stop in La Raya, where is the frontier to Cuzco and Puno, before arriving to Puno.

Day 10-11: Titicaca Lake Tour

We board our comfortable boat to explore Uros, Amantani, Taquile Island. We stop at various islands to enjoy the lake's scenic splendor and to meet the friendly people of these communities. Titicaca is also the largest lake in the world above 2000m, and the views from both Amantaní and Taquile Islands are stunning. Our first stop on Lake Titicaca is the floating islands of the Uros people. The Uros began their unusual floating existence centuries ago in an effort to isolate themselves from the Colla and Inca tribes. Sadly, the Uros language has died out, and today they speak Aymara due to intermarriage with Aymara-speakers. Today about 300 families live on the islands, however their numbers are slowly declining.

The Totora reeds that grow in the shallows of the lake are used for making everything from the islands themselves to the model boats that the islanders sell. The islands are made up of layers upon layers of reeds; as the layers closest to the water start to rot, they are replaced with fresh reeds on top. The reeds are also used to build their boats, which if constructed well will last up to 6 months.

Day 12: Puno

Located at 3830 m above sea level, Puno is the highest night stop on the tour. As a result the weather can be extreme with very cold nights and a strong sun during the day. Puno is also known for its wealth of traditional dances: there are up to 100 different varieties, usually performed in the street processions celebrating Catholic feast days. Today is a relaxing day, free time to explore Puno, visit its market, buy souvenirs, take optional activities, and get ready for one last night in the city.

Day 13: Bus to Arequipa

Peru’s second most important city after Lima, Arequipa maintains a traditional colonial style and more laid back pace in comparison with the capital. Sitting at 2325 m (7626 ft) above sea level and surrounded by the Andes mountains, this delightful colonial town is well worth a visit. Arequipa was built from a very light coloured volcanic rock called sillar, so older buildings dazzle in the sun, giving the city its nickname, “the White City.” The main plaza with its cafés and nearby cathedral is a top draw for visitors.

Those with an interest in history and architecture may take an optional visit to the Convent of Santa Catalina, offering a brief respite from the outside world and a unique view into a by-gone way of life. Spectacular mountains surround Arequipa, the most famous of which is El Misti Volcano, at 5822 m (19096 ft) with its beautiful snow-capped peak.

Day 14-15: Colca Canyon Tour

Travel a rough, rutted road through high plains flanked by extensive Inca and pre-Inca terracing that goes on for kilometres. Our first stop is Chivay, a picturesque village near the Colca Canyon—one of the deepest canyons in the world. Take a dip in the local hot thermal baths, watch live Andean music at a peña or go for a llama steak. Two nights gives us time to take short hikes to acclimatize to the altitude. Take a tour around the canyon, stopping in fascinating villages and at “miradors” (scenic lookouts), where with a little luck we see Andean Condors soaring over majestic the Andes mountains. Other unusual animals we may see in the Andean landscape include 3 different species of camelids: alpaca, llama and vicuña.

Day 16: Arequipa (B)

Today is a relaxing day, free time to explore Arequipa, visit its market, and buy souvenirs. You may visit the peaceful Santa Catalina Monastery or watch the local activities, get ready for one last night in the city.

Day 17: Flight to Lima

Lima, there are many fine museums in and around the city, including the Museo Rafael Larco Herrera, which houses an equally impressive collection of pottery, mummies and textiles from the Paracas and Nazca cultures. The more affluent districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro, which are on the coast, offer good nightlife and cafés all within walking distance. Limeños (Lima’s residents) are friendly, and the city is filled with excellent restaurants; seafood lovers in particular should be sure to try a ceviche, for which Lima is well known.

Where is located the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, Titicaca Lake and Colca Canyon?

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is located 35 kilometers from Cusco , and about 600 meters below the level of Cusco. It covers the part of the basin of the Vilcanota river between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo .

The Inca Trail is located in the heart of the Peruvian Andes , between Cuzco, Capital of the ancient Inca Empire, and the citadel of Machu Picchu. The alternation of mountains and valleys along the walk offers incredible and diversified landscapes.

On the other hand, Titicaca Lake is located on the Andes mountain range , between Peru and Bolivia. Specifically, 56% of its water body belongs to Peru, while the remaining 44% belongs to Bolivia. Titicaca Lake is the highest navigable lake in the world. It occupies a surface of 8.562 km², located to an average altitude of 3.812 meters, and its mass of water reaches a maximum depth of 281 meters.

And, the Colca Canyon is located in the northeastern of Arequipa Region , in the Caylloma province of Caylloma. The highest point of the Valley is the inactive Ampato volcano (6288 m.a.s.l.), and the lowest is the confluence of the Colca and Andamayo rivers (970 m.a.s.l.). The Colca Valley has an area of ​​100 km long.

How many kilometers is walked during the Inca Trail and how many hours do we walk per day?

The Inca Trail is 43 kilometers long or 26.12 miles long . There are camping sites assigned by the Ministry of Culture that are between 10 and 13 kilometers away from each other, so the daily walking time can vary between 5 to 8 hours per day for the first three days and approximately 2 hours for the last day. The hours of walking and the distance covered may vary according to the physical condition of each person.

What does "Pisac", "Ollantaytambo", "Machu Picchu" and "Titicaca Lake" mean?

The origin of the name " Pisac " comes, probably, from Quechua word "p'isaqa", which means partridge (abundant in this place).

The word Ollantaytambo is made up of two words: " Ollantay ", which comes from Aymara and means to observe , to look from above, and " Tambo ", which comes from Quechua and means shelter, resting place . Therefore, the meaning of Ollantaytambo would be: "resting place from where you can look out".

"Machu Picchu" means 'Old Mountain' in the indigenous Quechua language. "Machu Picchu", the lost city of the Incas, is an unprecedented historical, natural and architectural complex, a tourist destination that has earned the category of inescapable.

The name of "Titicaca" has a deep meaning in local mythology, in Quechua Language, "Titicaca" means "Stone Cougar", formed by the word "Titi", meaning cougar; and "Caca", meaning stone (in reference to the "Sacred Rock" located on the "Sun Island").

How difficult is the Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail is considered an intermediate level trek . Since it does not include rock climbing, or hiking on snow, isn´t required previous experience. The most difficult part comes the second day, when we climb a number of stairs and start from 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) to climb to more than 4000 meters (13,123 feet) walking through a small space, later things become more easy as the road continues downhill. Keep in mind that you will carry your personal items, which may include clothing, camera, water, camp equipment, etc; which may add difficulty to the trek because of the weight. 

Is it possible to do the Inca Trail or visit the Titicaca Lake and Colca Canyon on my own ?

If you are an experienced hiker, you may want to go hiking to the classic Inca Trail on your own, without a tour operator, without a guide, without a carrier, just you and the way. However, that is NOT possible.

Government regulations do not allow it, since 2001 hiking independently on the Inca Trail is prohibited. The regulation states that each hiker must be accompanied by a qualified professional guide. The UGM (Management Unit of Machu Picchu) is the regulatory entity that supervises companies fulfill certain requirements to operate this route. The license of each company is renewed annually, likewise, the list of authorized guides and agencies is published on the official website:  www.machupicchu.gob.pe .

About "Titicaca Lake", you can visit it on your own. All the excursions begin at the lacustrine port of Puno. Here, you will have to pay a "lacustrine boarding fee" of 6 soles.Then, walking along the coastal road, you will inevitably be approached by vendors and intermediaries offering all kinds of boats. It is best to hire a tour directly on the dock and when the boat is about to depart.

Finally, to visit the Colca Canyon, you must first arrive to Arequipa. Then, you can buy a ticket to Cabanaconde, if you do not plan to get off at Chivay, or if you want to do the trekking on your own. The travel distance from Arequipa to Chivay is 164 km and 3 hours approx. And the distance from Arequipa to Cabanaconde is 220 km. with an average of 5 hours of travel by local bus, where the trekking routes begin.
