Metric Unveil New Song + Video “All Comes Crashing”

From forthcoming eighth studio album formentera, set for release july 8th.

Today,  Metric  share a new single and video “ All Comes Crashing ;” Listen/share  HERE  and watch/share the video  HERE .

“All Comes Crashing” is the first offering from Metric’s upcoming eighth studio album,  Formentera , set to release on  July 8th . “Not everyone has a conventional life with conventional relationships,” says front woman  Emily Haines . “‘All Comes Crashing’” is a love song that goes beyond romantic love, it’s an expression of solidarity with whoever it is you would want to have beside you in the event of catastrophe. It might be your best friend, it might be your blood brother or your dog. The song is dedicated to those you consider your family, whatever that looks like for you.”

The words  This Is What Happened  flash across the screen in the video and have come to serve as the band’s motto as they reckon with the events of the last few years—a band at its peak of creative power attempting to decipher the turbulent world around us, with Haines positioned like a lightning rod in the midst of it, emerging with a fresh new album that sounds like essential Metric.

The band will be hitting the road on a Live Nation produced North American headline tour,  The Doomscroller Tour , set to kick off this August in Victoria, BC with stops in 39-cities. Complete list of dates below. Metric has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting War Child and their work to empower children and families in communities affected by war throughout the world.

“We’re crafting a set list based on fan favorites including deep cuts from  Live It Out  and  Old World , and it’s been wild to see how the new songs from  Formentera  flow with the classics from  Fantasies  and  Synthetica ,” says Haines. “…I want Metric fans to have the best concert experience possible and feel like they got to escape into another reality with us for the evening.”

Tickets for The Doomscroller Tour go on sale to the general public on Fri, May 6 at 10am local time. View the full list of tour dates and get tickets   HERE .

Metric are a critically-acclaimed Toronto rock band consisting of  Emily Haines ,  James Shaw ,  Joshua Winstead  and  Joules Scott Key . Their last album  Art of Doubt  was released in 2018 to praise from NPR Music,  New York Times ,  Rolling Stone  and more.

Praise for Metric:

The New York Times

“The group’s pulsating synthesizers and looming guitars carry new-wave urgency into the 21st century.”

“… Art of Doubt  is the sound of a band that’s only reinvigorated by the arrival of its 20th anniversary.”

“Emily Haines leads her band into their seventh album with their own sound… full of big, broad rock anthems.”

“Partly inspired by the chaotic state of the world, the group is ready to rock again”

“Defiance never sounded so good.”

The vinyl artwork for Metric’s new album, Formentera, includes a motto that sums up the past few years: This Is What Happened. It’s an understatement that manages to say everything. Even real places become imaginary when they are so far out of reach. Named for an idyllic island near Ibiza off the coast of Spain, Formentera is a place that, for Metric, only existed on a page in a “dream destinations” travel book that lay open on a desk in the new recording studio that guitarist Jimmy Shaw built in 2020, in a rural hamlet north of Toronto. This is the setting where the band’s eighth album took shape.

Metric’s sound is both genre-defying and genre-defining. Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott Key started playing together in NYC in 2001. They are just getting started.

“One of the high points of 2022 for us has been working on putting everything together for The Doomscroller Tour,” says frontwomen Emily Haines. “We’re crafting a set list based on fan favorites including deep cuts from Live it Out & Old World and it’s been wild to see how the new songs from Formentera flow with the classics from Fantasies & Synthetica. I’m really happy with the venues we chose, they suit the lighting and sonics and the whole mood of the show we’re crafting. The Canadian leg of Metric's Doomscroller tour kicked off last night (August 11) at the Royal Theatre in Victoria, British Columbia. The band opened their 17-song set with the tour's namesake - although at this time we're not sure if they played the entire 10-minute version of the track. Signs point to YES because when they debuted "Doomscroller" in Mexico City back in May, they did the full version - see some fan footage of that here .

They followed with their 2nd most-performed song to date, "Gold Guns Girls" and one of only two songs from Art of Doubt, "Dark Saturday."

Lead single "All Comes Crashing" preceded the very first live debut of the evening, "What Feels Like Eternity." (We're on the hunt for some fan footage, please hit us up on Twitter if you see any.)

Their #1 most-performed song to date, "Help I'm Alive" came before the live debut of their album's title track, "Formentera" and mid-set they pulled out rarity "The Police and The Private" (a song only performed 22 times so far).

"Enemies of the Ocean" and album closer "Paths in the Sky" were the live debuts of the latter half of the set, while "False Dichotomy" was performed live for the first time ever during the three-song encore.

Check out the full setlist from opening night:

Despite Formentera 's release just last month (July 8), there are only two songs from the album that they haven't performed live yet, "I Will Never Settle" and "Oh Please."

Metric plays a second night at the Royal Theater tonight (August 12) before moving on to Vancouver. See a full list of dates via their official site .

Metric Bemoan the Internet on New Single “Doomscroller”: Stream

A 10-minute cut from Formentera

Metric Bemoan the Internet on New Single “Doomscroller”: Stream

The Metric renaissance is in full swing. The indie rock band’s eighth studio album Formentera   is coming July 8th, and they’re offering another preview today with the 10-minute epic “Doomscroller” and its accompanying music video.

“Doomscroller” is essentially divided into two parts: Its front half starts with a steady bass line and four-on-the-floor beat, embellished with scintillating synths. The instrumentals build into a roaring blast of dark house music, as singer Emily Haines’ vocals are distorted to oblivion. Then, the track drops into a piano ballad, before revving things back up with a more rock-forward finale.

As its title implies, “Doomscroller” evokes the anxiety of witnessing the news cycle in the digital age, where disaster always feels as though it’s just one tweet away. “I’m a true doomscroller/ I can’t seem to shut it down/ Until the worst is over/ And it’s never over,” Haines sings.

The video for “Doomscroller” was filmed in-studio by frequent Metric collaborator Justin Broadbent. Haines adds: “Justin captured rare studio footage of the recording of ‘Doomscroller’ and we used it like a visual anchor… These traces of life on earth that appear and disappear throughout the song subtly mirror the shifting moods of the music.” Listen to the song below.

Metric announced Formentera  with the lead single “All Comes Crashing,” and they’ll promote the record with a North American tour through this October; get your tickets over at Ticketmaster .

Metric have shared a huge, sweeping 10-minute track, “Doomscroller.”

The song serves as the opener to their highly anticipated forthcoming album, Formentera , out July 8th. The preview is a sonic and visual journey that sends you into a “high speed chase through the wild terrain of modern life,” Metric explain. The accompanying video for the track is part of Metric’s ongoing collaboration with photographer and visual artist Justin Broadbent.

“Justin captured rare studio footage of the recording of ‘Doomscroller’ and we used it like a visual anchor, as evocative places outside the room keep creeping in,” Metric frontwoman Emily Haines explains. “These traces of life on earth that appear and disappear throughout the song subtly mirror the shifting moods of the music.”

“We came to this realization that it wasn’t even about an actual place anymore, it was about creating an escape for yourself in your mind because you’re powerless over so many things,” Haines explains.

In addition to “Doomscroller,” Formentera features the previously released “All Comes Crashing.”

Pre-order Formentera here or check out the tracklist below.

Metric kicks off Doomscroller tour in Victoria Thursday and Friday

Metric, from left, Jimmy Shaw, Emily Haines, Joshua Winstead, and Joules Scott-Key, begin their Canadian tour in Victoria tonight. JUSTIN BROADBENT

LIVE MUSIC: Metric with Dear Rouge

Where: Royal Theatre

When: Thursday and Friday, Aug. 11-12, 8 p.m.

Tickets: $48.25-$91.25 from rmts.bc.ca or 250-386-6121

Metric released its eighth full-length album, Formentera , in early July, when the arts and culture community was finding its feet after two tumultuous years.

Released at a time when most on the planet were eager to look forward, the album served as a prescient reminder: Live each day as your last.

“[T]hat isn’t going anywhere, that feeling of … powerlessness,” frontperson and primary lyricist Emily Haines told Paste magazine in a recent interview. “But it’s all within the scope of what you can control, and what you can have an impact on.”

She sings about xenophobes and the ruling class on Formentera , and with song titles such as Doomscroller , All Comes Crashing , What Feels Like Eternity , Enemies of the Ocean , and False Dichotomy , it would appear that Haines and her bandmates struggled throughout the pandemic. But they found ways of coping. Guitarist Jimmy Shaw hunkered down in his new Toronto studio, while Haines found solace in the natural oasis of her rural Ontario property.

“The city was really grim and frightening,” she told Paste . “So I was in nature as much as I could be, and then I did feel, though, like I was getting squirrelly as hell, so going back to New York was a real kind of key reset. I went back for Hal Willner’s funeral, which was two years after, because he passed away from COVID the same day as John Prine during the pandemic. And I have such a long relationship with the city, and he and Lou [Reed] were the keys to my adult life in New York, and my creative life. And now they’re both dead. But it felt really good to be back in New York, because New York will always bounce back.”

Metric’s tour to support the new album gets underway in Victoria tonight, with the first of two shows at the Royal Theatre. Those are followed by 14 others across Canada, and 26 in the United States. Band members Haines, Shaw, Joshua Winstead, and Joules Scott-Key arrived in Victoria Tuesday, to rehearse for the Doomscroller Tour , but were unavailable for interviews as the tour opener approached.

Haines was full of insightful comment when Formentera was released, however, and said in a statement when the album was released how she fought to keep the pandemic from dominating the recording’s lyrical integrity. She pointed to All Comes Crashing as an example of a love song “that goes beyond romantic love,” suggesting that its hopeful nature was a way forward for us all.

“It’s an expression of solidarity with whoever it is you would want to have beside you in the event of catastrophe. It might be your best friend, it might be your blood brother or your dog. The song is dedicated to those you consider your family, whatever that looks like for you.”

Metric remains one of Canada’s top touring and recording acts, with nine Juno Award nominations to their credit. The band last won one in 2013, when Synthetica took home the alternative album of the year trophy, but they scored group of the year nods in 2016 and 2019, putting them comfortably in the conversation as one of the rock and pop acts of its era. Their catalogue of songs is such at that Metric issued Greatest Hits Vol. 1 last year, chronicling the band’s evolution from early rock singles Combat Baby and Dead Disco to the ’80s electro-pop of Now or Never Now , from 2018’s Art of Doubt .

Haines addressed the polarity of Metric’s music in a statement around the time of Formentera ’s release, and suggested its then-upcoming tour — which is now directly upon us — would be something special.

“We’re crafting a set list based on fan favourites including deep cuts from [albums] Live It Out and Old World , and it’s been wild to see how the new songs from Formentera flow with the classics from [albums] Fantasies and Synthetica ,” she said.

“I want Metric fans to have the best concert experience possible and feel like they got to escape into another reality with us for the evening.”

$60 with fees for a GA actually isn't that bad for a band as well known as Metric. I've paid more for tours a decade ago, albeit for larger acts. The vinyl artwork for Metric's new album, Formentera, includes a motto that sums up the past few years: This Is What Happened. It's an understatement that manages to say everything. Even real places become imaginary when they are so far out of reach. Named for an idyllic island near Ibiza off the coast of Spain, Formentera is a place that, for Metric, only existed on a page in a "dream ...
