Updated 27th December 2023 with newly released Nurburgring 2024 dates and opening times.

Nurburgring 2024 opening times

The official Nurburgring website lists the Nurburgring opening hours for Touristenfahrten (tourist driving) on both the Nordschleife and GP track (different calendars for each). Click the links below to see the calendar with specific opening times for every day.

Note   –  The Ring is  not  open for Touristenfahrten every day. Other events such as track days, driver training days or race meetings will take priority over the tourist driving sessions on many occasions. So don’t just assume it will be open every day. Check the calendar.

2024 nurburgring bonus driving days.

At a few random points throughout the year the Ring management like to throw a few bonus driving days our way in the form of mid-week dates where the track’s open all day.

Think about these when you’re planning your trips for 2024 as you may be able to factor in an extra full day of driving in the week. These dates are all listed below, but are subject to change at the Ring management’s discretion.

Easter weekend & Car Freitag.  The most infamous weekend of the year at the Ring, where the track is open for four full days of lapping and it will be absolutely heaving. Especially on the Friday, known as Car Freitag.

G reen Hell Driving Days. A couple of times throughout the year there’s some long weekends of full days of lapping.

Below are all the ‘bonus’ full driving days throughout the year.

  • Friday 29th March (Car Freitag) – 10am to 6:30pm
  • Monday 1st April (Easter Monday) – 8am to 7pm
  • Wednesday 9th April – 8am to 7pm
  • Monday 20th April (Green Hell Driving Day) – 8am to 7pm
  • Thursday 3rd October (Green Hell Driving Day) – 8am to 7pm
  • Friday 4th October (Green Hell Driving Day) – 8am to 7pm
  • Friday 1st November – 9am to 4:30pm

Can you just turn up and drive?

The Ring is classed as a public road. So long as your car is road legal, you have a valid driver’s licence and insurance then you are eligible to drive the ‘Ring during Touristenfahrten.

You need to purchase a lap ticket beforehand, and you need to make sure you’re aware of the Nurburgring opening hours.

Before you head out on track, read our quick guide to the complete list of Nurburgring rules. You should try and familiarise yourself with all of these before you head out for some laps.

And don’t forget that the circuit is incredibly long, so check out our article on learning the Nurburgring to help have an idea of the track before you get behind the wheel.

Is the Nurburgring open all year?

The Nurburgring is closed in the winter months for both tourist driving and trackdays. Normally some time in early November will be the last driving day of the year and mid-March will be the first.

The weather in the Eifel mountains can be pretty unpredictable at the best of times, with the locals often shunning those who rely too heavily on the forecasts. But one thing that is normally fairly certain is that the winter months can be pretty bleak – lots of rain, cold temperatures and snow are all likely to fall across the region.

The Nurburgring is not open due to snow covering the circuit

Additionally, Nurburgring management normally needs some time to do work on the circuit. Often this involves resurfacing the tarmac, altering kerbs and run-off areas and replacing armco. Hopefully it will soon also include installation of more robust safety measures.

In 2024, the last planned day of tourist driving is November 17th , but as with all dates this is subject to change. The risk of poor weather at this time of year is pretty high!

Don’t forget you can check the Nurburgring webcams to get a live view of the conditions, traffic, and whether it looks like the track’s open.

Nurburgring calendar November 2024

Check out our list of other things to do near the Nurburgring for ideas on how to fill your tiem when the circuit is closed.

What time does the Nurburgring open?

During weekdays, the Nordschleife is usually only open for evening sessions. The circuit opens at either 17:00, 17:15 or 17:30, depending on the specific schedule for that day. There are some exceptions to this, however – see the ‘bonus driving days’ section later on in this article.

On the weekends the Nurburgring opening hours can vary. The earliest the circuit will open is 08:00, and this is usually for a full day of lapping. But the exact opening time will depend on the day as there may be other events on the track in the morning. Check the Nurburgring calendar before you go to be sure.

Usually the weekday sessions are not too busy, and on the weekends if you can get there for 8am the first 90mins or so are normally some of the clearest lapping of the day, before the queues build up.

Motorbike riders take note – There are some dates on the Nurburgring calendar that say ‘closed to motorbikes’. This is likely to be after a race event in the morning where the build up of tyre rubber and other debris from the racing is deemed too dangerous for bikes. Check the calendar carefully before booking.

The nurburgring carpark webcam showing busy queues

What time does the Nurburgring close?

During weekdays the Nordschleife normally closes at 19:30 , allowing a minimum of 2 hours of lapping for an evening session.

On weekends the latest the circuit will close is 19:00 in the lighter months, usually April up to and including September. From October onwards the closing times get gradually earlier – 17:00 at the end of October and 16:30 for the last day of lapping in November.

Can you drive the Nurburgring at night?

Unless you are lucky enough to be competing in the 24 hours of the Nurburgring , then no. The circuit closing times for tourist driving are scheduled to avoid driving in the dark. As we saw above, the closing times get gradually early as winter sets in.

Whilst the circuit is a public road, even the management are smart enough to not increase risk by letting the general public loose on the track at night. But man, that would be one heck of an experience!

How to plan a trip to the Nürburgring: The Ultimate Guide

April 12, 2023

Hey there, speed fanatic! Are you ready for the experience of a lifetime? In this comprehensive guide, I’ll uncover everything you need to have the perfect trip to the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. So strap in, grab your helmet, and let’s hit the gas on this exciting journey!

Meticulous Planning: The Key to a Memorable Trip

Embarking on an adrenaline-pumping trip to the Nürburgring demands thorough planning to guarantee an unforgettable experience. From pinpointing the ideal time for your visit and coordinating your travel and accommodations to budgeting and prepping for your high-speed adventure, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. We’ll dive into essential considerations such as weather patterns, special events, transportation, lodging options, and even insider tips on how to make the most of your Nürburgring trip.

Ideal Times to Experience the Nürburgring: Striking the Perfect Balance

Timing your visit to the Nürburgring is essential for an optimal driving experience. The best periods to visit the track are from late spring to early fall, more specifically between April and October. During these months, you’ll be able to take full advantage of the milder weather, which translates to warmer temperatures, longer daylight hours, and a reduced likelihood of rain or snow.

It’s important to note that the Nürburgring is closed during the winter months due to the harsh weather conditions and increased safety risks. Snow, ice, and fog make the track unsuitable for driving during this time.

Visiting during the ideal months also means that you can fully appreciate the picturesque beauty of the Eifel region surrounding the track. The lush green forests, rolling hills, and quaint villages create a stunning backdrop for your high-speed adventure. Plus, during these months, you’ll have the opportunity to attend various events and races that are more likely to take place during this period.

However, keep in mind that the track can become very busy in the middle of summer, with large crowds and numerous drivers on the track. This can make for a more congested driving experience, particularly during public driving sessions. If you’re planning your trip during popular events or holidays, it’s essential to book your lodging and track time well in advance to secure your spot.

By carefully choosing the right time to visit the Nürburgring, you can maximize your driving experience, immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty, and create lasting memories of your high-speed adventure.

In the end, planning a trip to the Nürburgring can feel a bit like playing the lottery, as weather and track conditions can vary greatly.

Experience Unforgettable Events and Races

The Nürburgring is a hive of activity throughout the year, hosting a plethora of events and races catering to diverse interests. Some of the most popular events include the ADAC 24 Hours of Nürburgring, an endurance race that attracts racing fans from around the world, and the Nürburgring Drift Cup, which showcases the incredible skills of drift racers. Additionally, the VLN Endurance Championship races, held throughout the season, offer a series of exciting competitions for motorsports enthusiasts. To stay updated on upcoming events and plan your trip accordingly, regularly check the Nürburgring’s event calendar.

Arriving at the Nürburgring: Navigating Your Way to the Legendary Track

Getting to the Nürburgring can be an adventure in itself. There are two main ways people typically reach the track: driving their own vehicle or flying and renting a car at the airport. Each option has its advantages and considerations, so it’s essential to choose the method that best suits your preferences and needs.

1. Driving to the Nürburgring

Many enthusiasts opt to drive their own vehicles to the Nürburgring. This option allows you to have your own car on hand for driving on the track and exploring the picturesque Eifel region. If you live within a reasonable driving distance, this can be the most convenient and cost-effective option.

However, keep in mind that driving long distances can be tiring, and you’ll want to ensure you’re well-rested for your time on the track. Additionally, consider the potential wear and tear on your vehicle, particularly if you’re planning to drive it on the Nordschleife. Make sure your car is in top condition and properly serviced before embarking on your journey.

2. Flying and Renting a Car at the Airport

For those who live further away or prefer not to drive their own vehicle, flying into one of the nearby airports and renting a car can be a great alternative. The closest airports to the Nürburgring are Cologne-Bonn (CGN), Düsseldorf (DUS), and Frankfurt (FRA). Each of these airports offers numerous rental car options, allowing you to choose the perfect vehicle for your needs, whether you’re looking for a high-performance sports car or a more practical option for exploring the region.

When renting a car, be sure to check the rental agency’s policies regarding driving on the Nürburgring, as some companies have specific restrictions or requirements. Additionally, consider purchasing insurance coverage for your rental car, particularly if you plan to drive on the track.

Regardless of your chosen mode of transportation, be prepared for the possibility of traffic and potential delays, especially during peak travel times or special events at the Nürburgring. By planning your route and allowing for adequate travel time, you’ll ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to the legendary track.

Renting a Racing Car: Enhance Your Nürburgring Experience

For those who want to take their Nürburgring adventure to the next level, renting a racing car is an exhilarating option. A wide variety of companies around the track offer high-performance vehicles specifically prepared for the Nordschleife, ensuring you have the ultimate driving experience. Here are some key points to consider when renting a racing car for your Nürburgring trip:

1. Choosing the Right Racing Car

When selecting a rental car, consider your personal driving preferences, skill level, and budget. Rental companies offer a diverse range of vehicles, from hot hatches and sports sedans to high-powered supercars and even purpose-built track cars. Take the time to research the available options and choose a car that aligns with your desired driving experience and skill level.

For those new to the Nürburgring or track driving, I recommend starting with a slow vehicle, such as a VW Golf GTI, VW Polo. These cars offer a good balance between performance and drivability, allowing you to build confidence and improve your skills on the track. As you gain experience, you can consider moving up to more powerful and specialized racing cars.

2. Rental Company Considerations

When selecting a racing car rental company, there are several factors to consider. Look for reputable companies with positive reviews and a proven track record for customer satisfaction. Make sure the company has a clear understanding of the Nürburgring’s unique challenges and requirements and that their cars are properly prepared and maintained for track use.

Also, inquire about the company’s policies regarding track use, insurance coverage, and any additional fees or charges that may apply. Some rental companies may require you to purchase their specific insurance coverage for driving on the Nürburgring, while others may allow you to use your own coverage or even waive the requirement entirely.

3. Additional Services and Support

Many racing car rental companies offer a range of additional services to enhance your track experience. This may include options like professional instruction, data logging and analysis, in-car video recording, and even pre-booked track time. Consider taking advantage of these services to make the most of your time on the Nordschleife and learn from experienced professionals who know the track inside and out.

4. Booking and Preparation

Once you’ve chosen your rental car and company, make your reservation well in advance, as popular vehicles and track days can fill up quickly. Before your rental day, familiarize yourself with the car’s specifications, controls, and handling characteristics.

Renting a racing car for your Nürburgring trip can provide an unparalleled driving experience, allowing you to push your limits and create unforgettable memories on the world’s most iconic track. With careful planning and consideration, you’ll be well on your way to an adrenaline-fueled adventure you’ll never forget.

A Variety of Lodging Options: Hotels, Hostels, and Camping

You’ll find numerous accommodation options around the Nürburgring, catering to a wide range of preferences and budgets. Options include hotels, guesthouses, and hostels, many of which are located within a short distance from the track. For a more adventurous experience, consider camping at one of the track’s campgrounds, such as Camping am Nürburgring or Camping Müllerwiese, which offer a unique opportunity to stay close to the action and connect with fellow motorsports enthusiasts.

Keep in mind that accommodations can fill up quickly, especially during special events, so it’s essential to book early. Don’t forget to read reviews and research the amenities offered by each lodging option to ensure it meets your needs and preferences.

Driving on the track: Public Driving Sessions (Touristenfahrten) vs. Track Days

There are two main ways to experience the adrenaline rush of the Nürburgring: public driving sessions (Touristenfahrten) and track days. Touristenfahrten are open to anyone with a road-legal vehicle, allowing you to test your skills on the legendary track alongside drivers of varying experience levels. This option offers flexibility and spontaneity, making it a popular choice among first-time visitors.

On the other hand, track days are organized events with a limited number of participants, providing a more controlled driving experience with like-minded enthusiasts. These events typically feature additional benefits such as professional coaching, technical support, and dedicated track time, allowing you to focus on honing your skills and enjoying the thrill of driving on the Nordschleife.

Estimating Costs for Accommodations, Activities, and Transportation

A trip to the Nürburgring can vary greatly in cost, depending on factors such as accommodations, transportation, and activities. Accommodation costs can range from €50-€200 per night, while a lap ticket for Touristenfahrten costs €35. Track day entry fees can vary depending on the organizer and the specific event, often starting at 1000 euros.

Car rentals, insurance, and fuel expenses can also add to your overall budget. Keep in mind that driving on the Nordschleife can be demanding on your vehicle, so be prepared for potential maintenance costs, such as tire replacements.

Simple Nürburgring Trip Summary

Yeah, lots of things to remember, but follow these simple steps to plan your trip and experience the thrill of driving on the world’s most iconic track:

1. Reserve Your Dream Car

Start by booking a car at a reputable rental company near the Nürburgring. Choose a high-performance vehicle that matches your skill level and driving preferences for the ultimate experience. My tip: choose a car with an automatic gearbox so that you can focus on driving.

2. Secure a Cozy Stay

Next, book a comfortable hotel or campsite near the track to rest and recharge after your exhilarating driving sessions. Make your reservation early to ensure you get the best options available.

3. Journey to the Legendary Track

Pack your bags and set off on your adventure! Whether you’re driving, flying, or taking the train, plan your route and allow for adequate travel time to arrive at the Nürburgring ready for action.

4. Grab Your Card

Once you’re at the track, purchase your Touristenfahrten (public driving session) card, which allows you to drive on the famous Nordschleife circuit alongside other motoring enthusiasts.

5. Hit the Track and Unleash Your Inner Racer

Finally, it’s time to put pedal to the metal! Drive on the legendary Nürburgring track, immerse yourself in the thrill of high-speed racing, and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy your adventure!

The Final Lap: Embrace Your Need for Speed

As you wrap up your thrilling Nürburgring adventure, you’ll be left with memories of roaring engines, screeching tires, and the sheer exhilaration of conquering the legendary track. Your heart will race at the mere mention of the Nordschleife, and you’ll find yourself daydreaming about the next time you can take on its twists and turns.

So, buckle up, enjoy the ride, and let your inner speed demon loose! After all, you might just discover that life in the fast lane is a whole lot more fun than you ever imagined.

What is Touristenfahrten?

If you are a motorsports and track day enthusiast, then you have probably heard of Touristenfahrten (TF), a unique experience that allows anyone to drive on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, one of the most iconic and challenging race tracks in the world. But what exactly is Touristenfahrten, and how does it differ from a private track day?

nurburgring tourist dates

Touristenfahrten, which translates to "tourist rides" in English, is a public driving session that takes place on the Nordschleife, which is part of the Nürburgring complex in Germany. Unlike a private track day, where drivers have exclusive access to the circuit, Touristenfahrten allows anyone with a road-legal car or motorcycle to drive on the track at a specified time and date.

Nordschleife Touristenfahrten Opening Times

One of the key differences between Touristenfahrten and a private track day is how the day and access to the circuit is managed. During a private track day the circuit is closed to the public and only open for the use of the booked participants, there is no "arrive and drive" element. With this in mind you will also find a lot less cars on track at a private track day. You can usually find a combination of the following event rules. There can be different types of events for different types of cars (Street, Track, Race), Slick tyres may be used (usually with a full roll cage) . The track is divided into sessions, with each group of drivers given a specific amount of time to complete their laps. Cars do not have to be road legal and mandatory insurance is not required (Third party liability may vary). On the Nordschleife a lot of private track days are also aimed at experienced drivers Some popular private track day organisers are: Pistenclub

Destination Nürburgring

Circuit Days

Touristenfahrten, on the other hand, is more casual and is open and accessible for all on an "arrive and drive" basis for anyone who would like to experience a lap. The rules for Touristenfahrten generally follow the regular road laws of Germany, drivers are required to have a full valid driving licence, their cars must be road registered and legal which includes Insurance and a valid car safety inspection (TuV, MOT etc). Unlike a track day Touristenfahrten officially has no timing this means that drivers can take their time and enjoy the track at their own pace, without feeling pressured or rushed.

You may still find the odd lap time "hero" trying to win TF and the golden pineapple so it is a good idea to familiarise yourselves with the rules of Touristenfahrten, some of the key rules are: Only pass on the left with consent

Drivers of vehicles not licensed in Germany must carry proof of insurance.

The sound power level of 130 dB (A) must not be exceeded You can find the official Rules and Safety Guidelines for Touristenfahrten below:

Driving Regulations

Safety Regulations

Another key difference is the cost. Private track days are often expensive, with fees ranging from several hundred to several thousand Euros. Touristenfahrten, on the other hand, is much more affordable, with prices starting at 30 euros for a single lap.

You can get a green hell lap card online to buy your laps in advance:

Sign up for a Green Hell account

Despite the lower cost and more relaxed atmosphere, Touristenfahrten is not without its risks. The Nordschleife is a challenging and unforgiving track, with steep elevation changes, blind corners, and a variety of challenging turns. As with the normal road, accidents do happen and drivers are advised to take extra precautions and drive within their limits.

Touristenfahrten is a unique and exciting way to experience the Nordschleife, offering a more relaxed and affordable alternative to private track days. Whether you are a seasoned track day veteran or a first-time driver, Touristenfahrten is an experience that you won't forget anytime soon.
