PGA Tour announces $3 billion investment by SSG, negotiations continue with PIF

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - AUGUST 22: PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan speaks to the media prior to the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club on August 22, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

The PGA Tour has finalized a $3 billion deal with Strategic Sports Group (SSG), the Tour announced Wednesday. It held meetings with the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council as well as the larger membership of the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and Champions Tour to announce the news.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan touted the deal as a win in a memo to the players.

“By making PGA Tour members owners of their league, we strengthen the collective investment of our players in the success of the PGA Tour,” Monahan said. “Fans win when we all work to deliver the best in sports entertainment and return the focus to the incredible — and unmatched — competitive atmosphere created by our players, tournaments and partners.”

The PGA Tour Player Directors, a group that includes Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, voted unanimously for the deal.

“It was incredibly important for us to create opportunities for the players of today and in the future to be more invested in their organization, both financially and strategically,” said PGA Tour player directors Woods, Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott and Webb Simpson in a statement. “This not only further strengthens the Tour from a business perspective, but it also encourages the players to be fully invested in continuing to deliver – and further enhance – the best in golf to our fans.”

SSG is a group of investors that own a variety of sports franchises. It will make an initial investment of $1.5 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises and provide a “strategic focus on maximizing revenue generation for the benefit of the players.”

“Our enthusiasm for this new venture stems from a very deep respect for this remarkable game and a firm belief in the expansive growth potential of the PGA Tour,” said John Henry, principal owner of Fenway Sports Group and manager of the Strategic Sports Group.

PGA Tour players will collectively have access to $1.5 billion in equity shares of the new company, PGA Tour Enterprises. The amount for individual players will be determined by career accomplishments, recent success and tour membership status and will vest over time.

Negotiations with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) remain ongoing. PGA Tour policy board member Jordan Spieth was asked why the PGA Tour still would need a deal with PIF after making the deal with SSG.

“I think the short answer is we don’t have to and I think the long answer is the positive there is a unification,” Spieth said.

Spieth said the deal gives the tour flexibility to not be desperate in talking with LIV, especially as government regulation could provide a lengthy wrinkle in negotiations and many tour members remain split on how to move forward.

What is SSG?

The Strategic Sports Group seems to have come together specifically for this investment, the largest ever in pro golf. The list of investors includes Mark Attanasio (Milwaukee Brewers), Arthur Blank (Atlanta Falcons), Steve Cohen (New York Mets), John Henry and Tom Werner (Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC, Pittsburgh Penguins), Wyc Grousbeck (Boston Celtics), and Marc Lasry (former Milwaukee Bucks owner).

Many of those names are new to golf, though Blank, Lasry and Cohen also own TGL franchises in Atlanta, San Francisco and New York.

The PGA Tour announced last month it had chosen to move forward in negotiations with the group, after considering pitches from other hedge funds and investment capital firms.

What about the PIF?

While this represents a significant investment by an outside group into the PGA Tour, it does not end the ongoing fight between the tour and LIV, the PIF-funded team golf league that will operate its first event of 2024 this week in Mayokaba, Mexico.

And LIV continues to be aggressive — announcing Tuesday that Tyrrell Hatton, a top-10 player in the world according to DataGolf.com, has joined Jon Rahm’s Legion XII team along with touted amateur Caleb Surratt. In the absence of a deal — and with the tour openly negotiating with other investors — LIV has been unafraid to swoop in and increase its relevancy by adding more known, top-level players.

Rory McIlroy, long the biggest and most outspoken proponent of the PGA Tour, seems resigned to the current situation. He was asked Tuesday if a win at this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am or the Genesis Invitation next month would be “cheapened” by Rahm, Dustin Johnson and others not being in the field.

“I’d like to win here and stand up with a trophy on 18 green and know that I’ve beaten all of the best players in the world, so yeah,” McIlroy said.

What questions remain?

In a time when sponsors were pulling out of events as purses ballooned, yes, this is big news for the PGA Tour’s security and stability for the future. But it still leaves most questions unanswered. While there remains optimism in negotiations with PIF, it’s unclear what effect this ultimately has on the deal. It likely strengthens the tour’s position in negotiations, reducing its dependency on PIF investment. The other wrinkle is that any deal with PIF will likely deal with a lengthy regulatory process with the U.S. government. This likely helps the tour remain powerful in the short term.

But what does PGA Tour Enterprises look like? Very few questions have been answered. A large chunk is going to player purses and player equity, but what else does the tour plan to do with this funding? Does it hope to buy out other events? Does it want to expand the game globally? We’re still so early in this that a $3 billion deal still doesn’t provide clarity. — Brody Miller, staff writer

Lloyd Jefferson "Lj" Go is a Filipino professional golfer who is currently in a tear of sorts.

-In the last 9 weeks starting the end of March, he played and earned across 5 different tours where he had 2 wins (Philippine Golf Tour, China Golf Tour), a runner-up (Japan Abema Tour), 6th (DP World Tour), and 32nd (Japan Golf Tour)

-He got invited to the DP World Tour's Volvo China Open by virtue of his win in the China Golf Tour, and he took advantage by finishing 6th & winning $78,000 which is his personal biggest earning in a single tournament

-His OWGR as of this post is 667th, climbing up 500 spots after starting the year at 1166

-He finished college in Seton Hall University where he had a great run of sorts including winning the individual title in the Big East Championship

This is a bit of a late post of sharing his bag simply because it's only now he has returned home after playing that long run of tournaments abroad.  And I think I am proud to say that me - a proud and active Golfwrx member since 2005 - has been building his clubs since he was in high school.  So I am privy to all the specs and these photos were taken in my workshop where he brought his clubs after he arrived for some tlc.  These are the clubs he used in his incredible run the past two months.

DRIVER: Taylormade Qi10 LS 9* Tour Issue, Diamana ZF60 TX, plays at 45.625".  The rear weights are an 8 gram screw and 14 gram back weight.  The sleeve setting is 1 slot LOWER than Standard.  D7. 327 grams. Tour Velvet 360 grip.

3-WOOD: Taylormade Qi10 Tour 3/15, Tour AD DI 7X, plays at 43.125".  Sleeve setting is standard.  D4.5.  338 grams.  Tour Velvet 360 grip.

HYBRID:  Taylormade Steath 3/19,  Tour AD DI 95 X, plays at 41.125". D4.  375 grams.  MCC White grip.

4-IRON: Taylormade P760, 22* loft, 57.5* lie, C-Taper 125 S+, 38.625", D4, 421 grams. 317 cpm. MCC White grip.

5-IRON to PW: Taylormade P7MC 2020, stock lofts except PW, 3 degrees flat, C-Taper 130 X tipped & softstepped, 6-iron specs: 37.625", D4, 436 grams, 328 cpm. MCC White grip.

GW: Taylormade MG4 Black 50* SB, 61* lie, DG X100 Tour Issue, 35.5", D3, 469g, Tour Velvet 360 grip.

SW: Taylormade MG4 Black 54* SB, 61* lie, DG X100 Tour Issue, 35.25", D5.5, 479g, Tour Velvet 360 grip.

LW: Taylormade MG4 Satin 60* SB, 61* lie, DG X100 Tour Issue, 35.0", D4, 485g, Tour Velvet 360 grip, custom grind sole.

PUTTER:  Bettinardi Tour Stock Jam-W Flow Neck, fly-milled FIT Face, stainless steel.  3* loft, 70* lie, C-Taper shaft, 33.5", D8.5, 522grams, Iomic grip.

BALL:  Titleist ProV1 X

NOTES:  Driver specs don't match the rest of his set because he got it from the tour van to replace his Stealth and he just stuck in his old shaft but the Qi10LS head he got was heavy.... PW is 1.5* strong...  C-Taper iron shafts in 5-iron to PW were X but made to play closer to S+ which he has used his past two sets, the shafts were tipped and softstepped to compensate for his P7MC heads which had a shorter hosel bore depths and heavier head weights than "standard"...  LW sole has been custom grinded by my cousin ("burlygolfbuilds" in IG) following Lj's previous grinds which all came from a method taught to me by one of our country's golfing legends Frankie Minoza...  putter has a C-Taper shaft which is the shaft Bettinardi used for their 2016 BB Series models where Lj gamed the BB1F to much success during his college career

This is a bit of a long and details WITB post and I can even go longer: put more detailed specs, rant about the whys behind his choices, his preferences, his recent switches, clubs he is testing, clubs he plans to change and all that but I'll keep it until here.  I am not sure if there is much interest in a world #667 in this forum, but I guess compared to others - I am here to field any questions, and receive feedback on his set.

Pga championship 2024 sunday final round tee times and groups, how to watch, share this article.

pgt pro golf tour

The first 54 holes of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, are in the books and two names sit at the top of the leaderboard.

Collin Morikawa (4-under 67) and Xander Schauffele (68) are both 15 under after three rounds of play and hold a one-shot lead over fan-favorite Sahith Theegala (67).

It’s a bunched leaderboard, and plenty of star power is in the mix.

Shane Lowry, who shot a major-championship record-tying 62 Saturday , Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland are tied for fourth at 13 under, while Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre are 12 under and tied for seventh.

2024 PGA Championship TV schedule, coverage, live stream, channel, where to watch online, golf tee times

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 pga championship on tv or streaming live online.

pga-championship-valhalla-flag-white-2024-g.png

The second major of the 2024 golf season wraps Sunday in Louisville with plenty of big-time players looking to capture the Wanamaker Trophy and $3.3 million winner's prize from the PGA Championship's $18.5 million purse while setting a tone for the remainder of their respective campaigns. This as the beautify of May surrounds Valhalla Golf Club with the PGA Championship concluding its return to town for the first time in a decade. Do not miss a moment of the action by following  live leaderboard coverage of the PGA Championship  with analysis and highlights throughout the day.

An unfortunate wrench was thrown into the tournament Friday morning as, in unrelated incidents, a pedestrian was killed outside the Valhalla grounds in a traffic incident and world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested for violating traffic rules . Though Scheffler looked like he was going to hang tough, he played himself out of contention in the third round and opened the door to the rest of the field.

Xander Schauffele entered Sunday atop the leaderboard for the third straight day, except this time, he was for the lead with Collin Morikawa. Shane Lowry, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose and Viktor Hovland all surged up the leaderboard Saturday, while Sahith Theegala remained hot bouncing back from a rough start to put pressure on the leaders down the stretch. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth are among the other notable names lurking, though given the way the leaders started Sunday, it would take a miracle for any of them to move up far enough to capture the Wanamaker.

While attending the PGA Championship can be a ton of fun, simply being able to watch golf on the game's grandest stages is an incredible treat each year. We here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage with action streaming live all weekend.

CBS Sports golf anchor Jim Nantz is calling the action for the 34th consecutive year while hosting coverage from the super tower alongside lead analyst Trevor Immelman. Also at Valhalla for CBS Sports are Ian Baker-Finch, Frank Nobilo, Dottie Pepper, Colt Knost and Mark Immelman with Amanda Renner reporting and conducting interviews.

The 106th PGA Championship is the 34rd consecutive (and 41th overall) being broadcast by CBS Sports, which is offering multi-platform coverage throughout the week. In partnership with the PGA of America, CBS Sports is leading overall production efforts deploying 125 cameras and nearly 150 microphones to capture all the sights and sounds. Additional technological enhancements include Fly Cams, Bunker Cameras, state-of-the-art drone coverage, panoramic Falcon 360 cameras, Toptracer and more.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much PGA Championship as possible Sunday. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout and  download the CBS Sports App  to watch the PGA Championship live on your mobile device.

Japan-based LJ Go heads to Philippine Masters at Villamor in fine form

LJ Go

Buoyed by a strong joint runner-up finish in Japan, Lloyd Go is gearing up for a shot at his second Philippine Golf Tour victory as he joins a competitive field in the ICTSI Villamor Philippine Masters starting Tuesday (May 21) at the Villamor Golf Club in Pasay.

Go, who secured his first PGT win at Palos Verdes last March with a commanding four-stroke victory, has made impressive strides on the international stage since then.

His notable performance in the ABEMA Tour’s I Golf Shaper Challenge in Fukuoka last April, where he tied for second place, and a tied-for-32nd effort in the Japan Golf Tour’s For The Players By The Players tournament last week, highlight his peak form and readiness to compete.

The P2 million Philippine Masters marks the fourth leg of this year’s 10-stage circuit, organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. Go’s recent achievements make him one of the top contenders in the 72-hole championship.

Jhonnel Ababa, the reigning PGT Order of Merit champion, also enters the event with confidence after a dramatic victory over Guido van der Valk and Joenard Rates last year. Ababa’s triumph in the opening leg of this year’s Tour in Apo, Davao, sets him up as a formidable opponent.

Clyde Mondilla, who emerged victorious in the Tour's third stop at Caliraya Springs last April, is also in excellent form following a recent stint in Japan. Tony Lascuña, winner of the 2022 ICTSI Villamor Match Play Championship, likewise aims for a second win this season after capturing the TCC Invitational crown last January.

The field is further strengthened by seasoned campaigners and rising stars such as Reymon Jaraula, Rupert Zaragosa, Zanieboy Gialon, Keanu Jahns, Hyun Ho Rho, Elee Bisera, Jerson Balasabas, Aidric Chan, Kuresh Samanodi, Kristoffer Arevalo, Josh Jorge, Marvin Dumandan, Sean Ramos, Ryan Monsalve, and van der Valk.

International competitors Ozeki Kakeru, Gwon Minwook, Toru Nakajima, Daiya Suzuki, Kang Chonkoo, Kim Tae Won, Koji Inoue, Ueda Daiki, and Collin Wheeler add to the tournament’s excitement, promising a fierce battle for top honors.

Villamor challenges tour pros

The Villamor Golf Club’s flat but challenging layout, known for its tight fairways, will test the 70-player field’s accuracy and consistency. Success on this course demands precise approach shots to create birdie opportunities on the unpredictable greens.

Meanwhile, a select group of professionals will participate in the traditional pro-am tournament Monday, pairing with amateur players and guests from the sponsoring ICTSI and other key supporters, providing an opportunity to re-familiarize themselves with the course’s unique challenges.
