Check-Out What Our Customers Say! ★★★★★

I went with two others and we all agreed we had an amazing time. We felt very taken care of by our tour guide, Matt. When you're not from the area, you can feel really vulnerable when you're high. However, Matt always checked in at the right times and made the experience really fun. The bus was equipped with every tool you could want, and had water which was a really sweet thought. The stops were awesome, my favorite was a local skate park. I would definitely recommend spending your day on this experience, it made me and my boyfriend fall in love with Portland!

We went for a brewery tour for Father's Day and this was by far the best party bus I've been on. Fun exterior and the driver was extremely kind, accommodating, and safe. We all felt very taken care of the entire time, including the water and snacks on the bus. I would highly recommend this for your next event.

The tour guide is passionate and personable, and immediately created a chill, welcoming environment for the experience. The locations chosen to visit were clearly chosen with the intention to share the Classic Portland Experience. This experience is for everyone - Toking Tourists who want to see Portland, or Locals who love the Cannabis Culture. I did go with a friend, but would have definitely had fun and felt safe alone because of how inclusive and respectful the scene is, and because of the community environment the Tour Guide created.

The Potlandia Experience was a great time! We used their service for a company event and our guests thoroughly enjoyed the "trip". Matt, the owner and driver was the perfect combination of professional and fun. I hope to use his services again in the future.

I've been on the bus multiple times and took it down to Medford with my team. Everyone loved the bus and made this trip so much better then last time! Thanks Potlandia for the amazing day/night out!

Complete Guide to a Cannabis Road Trip in Portland, OR

In July of 2016, Portland, Oregon, legalized weed . It has been a long time coming, and many people in the United States believe that weed should be legal in every state. For now, though, most are grateful for an excuse to go on a road trip through Oregon. From the time weed was legalized, people worldwide began booking their tickets to experience a Portland weed tour. In nearly every other country in the world, going on a cannabis trip will land you straight in jail. However, Oregon marijuana laws make cannabis tours in Portland not only possible but a highly sought-after vacation. As long as you are over twenty-one and do not consume cannabis in public, you can enjoy the green leafy substance to your heart’s content.

In contrast to Amsterdam, where coffee shops are heavily associated with cannabis use, public consumption laws in Oregon have slowed the establishment of comparable public smoking lounges like those in Amsterdam. A few enterprising businesses have devised a workaround by establishing private clubs where you may engage in the festivities without violating any laws. If you are planning to go on a Portland weed tour, such places should be at the top of your list to visit. Oregon pot farms are also one of the must-see places Oregon for all travelers. The source of that weed you are smoking is a plant. And the plant comes from a farm. The farms are typically indoor so that the growers can control the environment. That said, there are some marijuana farms in Oregon that are outdoor. Outdoor pot plants usually do not produce as potent or reliable a harvest, as there are many uncontrollable factors, like weather, that growers need to consider. A pot farm is an excellent stop to add to your weed tour of Portland. The economy in Portland, Oregon, was boosted heavily by the legalization of marijuana. Estimates report that since legalization, over 12,500 jobs have been created with cumulative annual wages of $315 million by Oregon’s medical and recreational marijuana industry, which means a total economic impact of nearly $1.2 billion per year. That is an excellent indicator that you are heading in the right direction for people interested in going on a Portland weed tour or anywhere else in Oregon.

Hotel 420 Packages

With the surging demand for cannabis trips by people who live in states and countries still enforcing draconian laws that make it illegal to smoke, the reefer, the state of Oregon and Portland, in particular, have risen to the occasion. There are hotels and shops all over that make going on a cannabis tour in Portland not only simple but an incredible experience for wide-eyed tourists. What is a 420 package? Well, some hotels around Portland will put a box of 420 friendly goodies on your bed to welcome your arrival. Unfortunately, it won’t include actual cannabis. Still, with the availability of a wide variety of fantastic cannabis nearby any hotel that you book, your Portland weed tour will undoubtedly not be affected. Inside the box will be things like a t-shirt, hat, stickers, and other cool gear that will jump-start your cannabis tour in Portland the right way. 420 Packages are common practice but are typically an extra charge that you can select when booking your room.

Cannabis Dispensary Tours

What better way to enjoy your Portland weed tour than by spending time at the best dispensaries in Portland ? For anyone old enough to enter a dispensary, most are also old enough to remember what it was like without them. And for people having a cannabis tour in Portland and visiting from a state where marijuana is an illegal substance, walking into a dispensary is like walking into a mirage chamber. Is it even real? Can you purchase weed with a credit card? Woah, are those marijuana plants in the middle of the store real? Yes, to everything. As you browse the goods, you will probably notice the unbelievable strength some of the weed advertises. Well, all of the buds you see in the store come from one of the many Oregon pot farms. Marijuana farms in Oregon have all but perfected the art of growing marijuana.

Cannabis Restaurant

A cannabis restaurant is like any ordinary restaurant, except the food is infused with weed. You can typically order non-cannabis food, but the food that gets you high gives them their popularity. Great cannabis dishes are things like pizza, baked goods, smoothies, and other drinks. The atmosphere in these restaurants is always very laid back and inviting. It takes anywhere from thirty to ninety minutes for the high to kick in when you ingest weed, so after you finish your meal, relax and feel yourself slowly drift into the promised land as you chat the night away.

There are only a few states in the US that have legalized marijuana . The states that have legalized it have seen a dramatic rise in economic prosperity and boast some of the happiest residents in the country. Why wouldn’t people want to take a weed holiday there; who doesn’t want to be among other happy people? Whatever your interest is when it comes to marijuana. Maybe it’s the dispensaries or the farms or a chilled-out weed cafe. Whatever you are looking for on your cannabis tour in Portland, your fix is always in abundance, with a type of quality that is unmatched.

7 places to visit and tours to experience Portland's cannabis culture, according to an Oregon local

  • Cannabis has been recreationally legal in Oregon since 2015.
  • For the 21+ in Portland, there are various dispensaries that sell cannabis products and accessories.
  • Here's where to go, according to a Portland local.

In Oregon, marijuana has been recreationally legal since July 2015.

portland weed tours

The state legalized recreational cannabis in July 2015 , and before that, it had been available for medicinal use since 1998 .

Now, those over the age of 21 are able to purchase and use cannabis flower, as well as cannabis-derived products like edibles, concentrates, topicals, tinctures, and extracts.

I grew up in Oregon and watched the cannabis industry grow after legalization.

portland weed tours

I hear all about the changes from working in the news industry myself, and also from my husband, who worked in the cannabis industry while it expanded over the past seven years until recently.

Since 2015, I've seen a lot change. There are now more than 800 dispensaries around the state, according to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission , open to those over the age of 21, selling flower buds, edibles, glass accessories, and more.

Portland follows Oregon state law when it comes to marijuana sales and restrictions.

portland weed tours

Those over the age of 21 are allowed to purchase marijuana for recreational use.

However, you can't smoke in public (doing so could get you a citation), and you can't drive while under the influence. You also cannot take any marijuana products purchased in Oregon across state lines, including plant seeds, as these items are still federally illegal.

At dispensaries in Portland and throughout the state, employees with ask to see an ID to verify you're over 21, or over 18 with a registered medical marijuana card.

For those visiting Portland who may be curious, I think one of the best ways to learn about the city's cannabis culture is by visiting local dispensaries. Here's where you can find some of my favorite small businesses in Portland that sell recreational cannabis products and accessories, plus where to book a quirky cannabis-themed bus tour.

For the budget-conscious, Nectar and Parlour Cannabis Shop dispensaries have daily discounts and specials.

portland weed tours

Parlour Cannabis Shop is located in southwest Portland's Raleigh Hills. The store is designed to look like an antique barbershop, and has soft lighting that I think creates a calm and welcoming atmosphere. I've always found the staff to be polite and proactive in serving customers.

The menu has a premium flower selection, concentrates, edibles, and pre-rolls, among other items, and the shop has a sale or deal every day of the week. I also appreciate that Parlour lists the daily specials on their website, which I haven't seen from many other local dispensaries. The discounts typically are 15% off various products like edibles, topicals, tinctures, extracts, or flower.

Another shop for the budget-conscious is Nectar , a local dispensary chain that has several locations throughout the city and state. The shop sells flower, concentrates, edibles, topicals, smoke accessories, and logo souvenirs like sweatshirts and caps.

I think Nectar is a convenient option for finding a good deal as the various locations regularly have rotating, week-long specials on numerous products. And in my experience, the chain has a consistently friendly approach with shoppers.

Green Front can be a pricey dispensary, but I've found it often has the highest quality products.

portland weed tours

Green Front is a dispensary with two locations in the northern end of Portland. Prices here are higher than at Parlour Cannabis Shop or Nectar, but, in my opinion, the products are worth it if you're willing to splurge. Here, the buds are large, fresh, and dense with trichomes , which are tiny growths on cannabis flower that make for a more flavorful smoking experience.

I also appreciate that the store stays up to date with new releases in the cannabis industry, like new strains of flower and popular tinctures. Green Front also keeps a substantial stock of products from popular high-end brands.

For an excursion, take a tour to visit different dispensaries on a bus with a designated driver.

portland weed tours

Potlandia Experience is a tour company that runs a rock n' roll-themed trip around Portland on a 12-seater, green and purple tour bus. I think this is a convenient and safe way to partake freely, as the bus includes a designated driver, so attendees don't have to worry about smoking and driving, and instead can enjoy privacy inside the bus and enjoy views of driving around Portland.

The business has tours every Friday through Sunday, and has two different tours: The Potlandia Experience, and the Weed and Waterfalls tour.

On the Potlandia Experience, attendees are driven to visit several dispensaries around the city, and also stop by local microbreweries and food cart pods. The Weed and Waterfalls tour takes riders on a trip outside of Portland to the Columbia River Gorge for nature sightseeing and leisurely hikes, and attendees can consume marijuana on the bus ride.

Each tour costs $79 per person, and lasts for four hours. I think the Weed and Waterfalls tour is a fun option for visitors who want to see the state's nature outside of Portland, while the Potlandia Experience I'd recommend to those who prefer discovering new food scenes.

I think one of the best stops on the Potlandia experience tour is Electric Lettuce in the Lloyd District, one of four of the chain's locations around town. I always recognize an Electric Lettuce shop from its rainbow branding, which is usually painted on the building's steps or as a mural.

For cannabis-infused edibles and tinctures, visit the walkable Slabtown District for a handful of curated shops.

portland weed tours

MindRite is in the Slabtown district near the upscale Pearl District, which is a very walkable area. I never miss this dispensary thanks to its bright yellow walls and tree of medicine mural on the door. The business also has a sidewalk window counter, so you can walk right up to the open window and order your products, without having to go inside.

I'd recommend MindRite particularly for its edibles and tinctures, as the shop has a nicely curated supply of these items at reasonable prices, in my opinion. When I've visited, the shop has always had the latest edibles on the market, from cookies and gummies to tinctures meant for sublingual consumption.

Sublingual consumption means putting the tincture under your tongue to absorb, a method that has a faster onset time compared to edibles that are chewed and digested, according to Fluent Cannabis . For this reason, MindRite would be my pick for visitors looking for a good-quality product that acts fast.

Also in Slabtown, Power Plant on Thurman has quality concentrates and a taqueria next door.

portland weed tours

Power Plant on Thurman is a spot I like to stop into when I'm shopping in Uptown, which is what Portland locals like me call Northwest 23rd Avenue, a trendy street filled with boutiques that's not far from the Slabtown area.

The dispensary is in a two-story historic building with a pharmacy-style storefront. There's a generous selection of dabs and quality concentrates like rosin, live and cured resin , and other extracts .

Another perk of Power Plant is that it's located next to Cha! Cha! Cha!, a locally-owned taqueria with incredible house-made tortillas. The restaurant is a great stop, in my opinion, to satiate munchies with an order of tacos, burritos, or enchiladas.

Downtown, Serra has a luxurious shopping experience and high-end products.

portland weed tours

Serra is a thoughtfully curated dispensary in the heart of downtown Portland. I think this store has a more luxurious shopping experience compared to other dispensaries in town. Coming here reminds me of being in a high-end, designer store, and makes me feel like I'm shopping for quality items.

It's a clean shop with an upscale ambience, and products are displayed neatly on wood shelves and in delicate glass cases. There are both affordable and high-end products sold at Serra, including flower, edibles, concentrates, and sleek glass accessories.

Several dispensaries in town also sell unique glass smoking products and accessories.

portland weed tours

If you're looking for a glass pipe or piece, there are several stores I recommend.

In Southeast Portland, Green Oasis is a dispensary that I think is the best mom and pop-style joint in the area. It's family-owned and located in the historical Sellwood neighborhood, and a fun place to pick up glass pieces, in my experience. The store has a vibrant, ever-changing display with fun and unique designs at good prices, and sometimes a discounted $5 dish of colorful, small pieces to choose from, too.

Besides glass accessories, Green Oasis also has a full menu of cannabis products and a pre-roll joint selection. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and just what I'd expect from a neighborhood dispensary.

Another dispensary, Oregon's Finest, is grower-owned and operated and focuses on "top-shelf" items. In my experience, the flower sold here is always of a high quality. The store has a variety of uniquely designed glass accessories — I once saw a double bowl glass that was shaped like a cherry, and another unique art piece that doubled as a smokable pipe.

I especially appreciate how the dispensary showcases new, popular strains in beautiful glass jars that always catch my eye. With popular brands and aesthetically-pleasing displays, this is one of my favorite shops to show friends when they're in town.

Overall, Portland is a welcoming place for visitors looking to explore cannabis culture.

portland weed tours

In my experience, dispensaries around town are accommodating and inviting, and employees are more than happy to share their knowledge about cannabis products for sale.

If you do visit Portland in search of cannabis, remember to follow local laws , and don't smoke in public.

New management and glad I booked versus reading prior inaccuracies. Matt (hope I have this right) is outgoing and great at his tour. The 4/20 tour was the best of a tour for me ever! Meetup and confirmation all via text- no issues & day prior as noted The bus was tastefully decorated in weed decor just like you would expect with Cheech and Chong. He had a nice setup with paraphernalia (lighters, bomb, ashtrays etc); water; chips and a goodie bag. Everyone enjoys a merch bag lol We were a group of 5 strangers who will all agree had a great time with no driving involved. Especially on a misty Portland day. Matt gave us the safety talk and then the itinerary for the day. At the end of the tour all the stops he planned were in sync and flowed. In between he gave us many mini talks about Portland that were very interesting, intriguing & kept our attention. Usually they tied in to the places we stopped at. Without giving away the whole tour if you are open minded and ready to relax and enjoy the local spots to smoke, eat, drink, & support then this is "that" tour.

This trip was a lot of fun. We were able to visit a number of locations including a skate park, which was novel. Our guide was very knowledgeable and would come sit with us and just converse. He also dropped us off at a spot more convenient to our hotel.

Super fun ride and even better driver We went for a brewery tour for Father's Day and this was by far the best party bus I've been on. This experience is the ultimate Portland Pot experience.

Matt was so much fun to have as our tour guide! He knows a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff!! The tour was so much fun and very relaxing! I loved the spots he took us to, especially the food trucks and the view of the city! I really liked the dispensary he took us to (we returned to that same spot several times during our week there! I do wish though, that he would have taken to a second shop; maybe one with some more glass? That would be my only suggestion. If you are unfamiliar with the area or are not familiar with dispensaries protocols due this tour on one of your first days there!! It will give you a sense of things/areas that you might want to further explore on your stay!

Fantastic time! Everyone loved the bus and made this trip so much better then last time! Thanks Potlandia for the amazing day/night out!

For $75 we pretty much got driven to different dispensaries like an Uber... But we were already doing this on our own before the tour. We thought the tour was going to take us to a growing facility or farm. Instead we went to 3 dispensaries, one food place and a brewery. Although the driver was super friendly and welcoming he didn't give us any information that we didn't already know. Didn't feel like we learned anything new. Nothing was really included besides a couple of blunts to share with the fellow riders. If you wanted food, bud, or brews you had to purchase them. Met some cool people throughout the tour but nothing special.

Hi Kayla I’m sorry to hear you didn’t have a very good experience when you came out last year. We are under new ownership now and I can assure you our tour is quite different than what it used to be. I hope you’ll give us another chance and if you do your tour is on me

Cloning sounds scientific and inaccessible. To an extent, it is, even when the word refers to cannabis cultivation and not the thing scientists occasionally do to sheep. Pedal Rolls Out Portland Pot Tour

Guests purchasing pot on October 1st.

With recreational marijuana now legal in the state, Pedal Bike Tours is giving guests the chance to pull back the curtain on Oregon’s thriving marijuana industry with the launch of the state’s first cannabis-centered tour, the Portland Pot Tour.

Did you know hemp was one of the Willamette Valley’s first commercial crops? The Portland Pot Tour covers how Oregon’s fortunes have long been tied to the cannabis plant, bringing us up to legalization today. So in addition to the fascinating history, riders on the tour will learn the current laws for purchasing and consuming cannabis products, as well as get direct access to some of the finest pot available – and we’ll do it all by bike!

“People are curious about legal weed, and we’re excited to show them what’s happening,” says Pedal Bike Tours owner Todd Roll. “Who knows if this will be the state’s newest tourism draw, but either way, this ride will be pure fun.”

The relaxed 9-mile ride takes riders to some favorite dispensaries, like Canabliss and Gras , as well as legendary head shops like Third Eye Shoppe and Mellow Mood . Guests can browse and shop for the finest locally-grown and organic strains, hand-blown art glass and carved wooden pipes. The tour also includes delicious “pairings” with a couple munchy stops, including ice cream (yes: vegan options are available).

A stop at Canabliss dispensary in SE Portland.

Prices include a bike, helmet, guided tour, food and a joint of local marijuana at the end of the tour ($69). Riders will not consume marijuana on the tour itself, but are welcome to purchase products for later.

Date: Daily Time: 3:00PM to 6:00PM Where: starting at Pedal Bike Tours, 133 SW 2nd Avenue

We hope you can join us for this one-of-a-kind bike tour!

The 10 best cannabis tours and experiences in the US

Apr 19, 2021 • 6 min read

Side view of beautiful woman with hat smoking joint in marijuana plantation at sunset.

As cannabis tourism starts to go mainstream, cities with robust weed culture have turned the typical travel offerings on their heads.

These days, you might find yourself going on a rolling sushi and joints in Denver, puffing while painting in Portland, or ripping a vape on a party bus tour of San Francisco. In other words, getting stoned on the go has gotten a lot more creative than just toking up in the parking lot before a show.

In states where recreational cannabis is legal, you can now find bud-and-breakfasts for lodging, ganja-fueled empowerment getaways for women, and even spiritual church services to put you in tune with a higher power. Here are 10 of the best cannabis experiences you'll find coast to coast.

Multnomah Falls Tour in Portland, Oregon

High5Tours offers an outing within Portland, Oregon that's a lot of fun – after all, smoking pot on a private party bus with your crew or a handful of new friends is already super appealing. But you can really take it up to eleven with the Multnomah Falls Tour , which heads into the Columbia River Gorge to see Portland's most beloved waterfall. No, seriously – Multnomah Falls is so revered there's a LEGO version in the PDX airport. After taking in the falls, you'll have a chance to see the Gorge from above at Vista House, a scenic overlook, with a stop at a dispensary to stock up on supplies.

Puff, Pass and Paint

Founded by Denver-based landscape painter Heidi Keyes Puff, Pass and Paint began with painting classes in Colorado. It has now expanded to dozens of art-based classes and tours in 13 cities across the US including Washington, DC, and Boston .

These classes are held in private residences and BYOMJ (Bring Your Own Mary Jane), but smoking, vaping and eating edibles are all encouraged (though not required). The company also offers Puff, Pass & Bake cooking classes where you’ll learn how to make ‘budder,’ (cannabis infused butter for baking) as well as other infused concoctions from ice cream to hard candy.

Glowing Goddess Getaways

Open only to those who identify as women, Glowing Goddess Getaways are weekend ganja retreats meant to be shared with a few of your favorite friends — so long as you don’t mind glamping.

The retreats are held at private outdoor destinations across the US in states where recreational marijuana consumption is legal. The experience combines all-you-can-consume-cannabis, from dab bars loaded with smoky rips of shatter to infused chocolate fountains to platters of joints, with activities from yoga to dance to meditation meant to uplift and empower your inner goddess.

Cannabis Supper Club in Los Angeles

Leave it to Los Angeles to combine cannabis and haut cuisine for a high-flying, exclusive fine dining experience. The Cannabis Supper Club counts great strains of flower as just one of the Cali-fresh farm to table ingredients that are the backbone of a great meal. Chefs, growers, mixologists, and event specialists team up to create one-of-a-kind meals in private spaces that skirt the state's public consumption laws.

Strains of cannabis are paired with each course or incorporated into the dishes the way you typically include fine wine in a dinner. Every supper club is different, but one thing is for sure – the munchies hit different when you're slurping Shigoku oysters and dashi-dusted filet to satisfy your cravings instead of emptying a stale bag of Cheetos into your mouth.

Hunter S. Thompson's "Red Shark" Arrives At Cannabition

Cannabition Immersive Cannabis Museum in Las Vegas

You can’t currently get high inside Cannabition, the world’s first museum dedicated entirely to weed, although founder JJ Walker hopes that will change at some point in the future. Hit up a dispensary or one of the city’s new cannabis social lounges to blaze up before heading to this immersive, highly Instagram-friendly museum — or just pop an edible an hour before arriving and you’ll be in exactly the right state of mind.

Inside you can ride a slide into a pool of kind bud or snap a selfie lighting joint that is longer than you. But besides the fun photo ops, Cannabition is also educational, giving a great history of the cannabis plant’s biology, use and the culture around it.

Bud & Breakfast, Multiple Locations

This expanding brand has cannabis-friendly properties around the world where vaping, and in some cases smoking, is allowed in rooms or public spaces.

In the town of Idyllwild in the San Jacinto Mountains, about 100 miles from Los Angeles , Hicksville Pines Bud & Breakfast is the first of its kind in the state. There are 10 themed rooms and smoking is allowed in Room 420. All common areas are also weed friendly providing you vape, along with, community vaporizers are on offer.

Sushi & Joint Rolling in Denver

In Denver , My 420 Tours offers a number of cannabis-focused experiences including a Sushi & Joint Rolling class . First, you learn to hand roll a dispensary-professional quality joint packed with the herb of your choice — before class, you’ll get a coupon to purchase two grams of weed for $10 from a local recreational dispensary. After perfecting your spliff, it’s time to head outside and puff in the designated smoking area before returning to the classroom to learn how to roll sushi.

Held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in a residential space (so you can legally smoke outside), the two-hour class frequently sells out. The experience costs $79 per person.

Mary Jane Fonda in Portland, Oregon

Founder Amarett Jans busts both stereotypes and moves with Mary Jane Fonda , a popup fitness experience in which participants get more than their heart rates high.

Forget the picture of couchlock and munchies you might have in your head when you picture blazing. Instead, this blend of aerobics, yoga, and smoke sessions lasts longer than your typical workout and instead becomes a party dedicated to wellness on all fronts.

Summer of Love -- California

Cannabis-Infused City Cruise Tours, San Francisco

If you want a VIP cannabis experience in San Francisco then sign up for Emerald Farm’s Cannabis-Infused City Cruise Tour . Ride in style in a luxury limo and as you check out San Francisco’s most famous sights and weed-focused tourist attractions.

‘The Cannabis-Infused City Tour is a great way to meet local enthusiasts and see the city while you’re doing it,’ says Victro Pinho, the CEO and Founder of Emerald Farm Tours. ‘All through the lens of someone who cares about the community and not just the business. Oh, and you can smoke weed.’

You’ll also get top-shelf VIP treatment at all the retail cannabis lounges you visit and deep discounts on cannabis that's only offered only to tour guests.

Puff Puff Pour, Portland, Oregon

Oregon was the first state in the US to decriminalize possession of small amounts of cannabis in 1973. It was the third state to legalize recreational marijuana and today, one of its biggest industry issues is its weed surplus .

With all this herb, it’s little wonder Oregon also has some cool cannabis experiences. Puff Puff Pour by the Oregon Cannabis Concierge is a twist on food and beverage pairings by replacing the food with weed.

During the two-hour sessions, you’ll sample three unique strains of cannabis via a vape pen paired with three carefully selected beverages from craft beer to small-batch spirits and even cold brew coffees depending on the herb. You’ll also have an opportunity to speak with the cannabis farmers about the strains selected for your pairing.

Portland, Oregon is rapidly becoming one of the top Cannabis tourism destinations in the USA, and for good reason! Since legalizing recreational Cannabis in 2015, Portland Oregon has created all sorts of fun 420 friendly events.

In 2023 they hosted the Cannabis Cup, a highly esteemed (and competitive!) craft show and competition for the best strains the west coast has to offer.

But the best is yet to come, as already 2024 promises to be a banner year for Cannabis events in Portland. Read on to learn about the best 420 Events in Portland, Oregon.

Oregon Hempfest

portland weed tours

A spin-off of Seattle’s Hempfest, Oregon Hempfest has been operating in Oakland Oregon for over nine years, making it one of Oregon’s longest running 420 friendly events. While not located in Portland, Hempfest is a three and a half hour drive from the city. People can come for a day or buy a camping pass and stay on site.

There is live music, demonstrations, speakers about Cannabis legalization and new growing techniques, as well as the history of hemp. There’s also a talent show, giveaways, art and food vendors!

portland weed tours

Hempfest keeps the party going with night events for those who wish to camp or just want to stay for the night events. This fun Oregon festival is a great way to make friends, see cool music and art all while enjoying Cannabis.

Oregon Growers Cup

portland weed tours

Taking place in December, the Oregon Growers Cup is an annual event that started in 2015. The Growers Cup usually takes place in Riddle, Oregon.

The Oregon Growers Cup is worth the trip from Portland, especially for the Cannabis enthusiast who is serious about the craft. In 2020 the Oregon Growers Cup featured over 300 different strains vying for the win! They also participate in a Growers Cup, where each grower attempts to get the best version of the same Cannabis strain.

The Oregon growers cup is not just for professionals. Cannabis categories include Indica, Sativa and Hybrid in Medical, Recreational and even Homegrower Categories.

There is also live music, food and vendors. However, this event is only available to members, so get your membership now before they sell out!

Celebrate 420 at Flight Lounge

Flight Lounge has been an Oregon City staple since its opening. The original location was one part lounge and one part brunch spot– two great tastes that taste great together!

Flight lounge is membership only, but membership can be purchased for a mere 10 dollars and comes with a free soft drink each visit. It is important to note that their soda collection available is one of the best around— not just coke and pepsi, but fruit punch and fizzy water. These guys really know what they are doing.

Their last 420 show featured local rap artists and an amazing dinner. While Flight Lounge does a lot of things right– free soft drinks, video games, and bongs for those who request them– what they really excel in is food. Their breakfasts rival even the best Portland brunch restaurant and that is saying something.

Unfortunately, Flight Lounge closed their flagship location in Oregon City. They are currently looking for a new venue closer to Portland. We hope to see them reopen in time for 420, which will surely be a must-attend event!

420 Hape & Breath-work Class at Make & Mary

portland weed tours

Make & Mary is a great Portland staple for mindfulness, herbalism and art. Based in the Alberta Arts district, this female and BIPOC owned business offers various herbal remedies as well as mindfulness and meditation classes.

On 4/20 they are having a Hape and Breathwork class to help you relax and center while enjoying Cannabis products.

What is Hape? Simply put, Hape is a form of ancient herbalism dating back to ancient Brazilian indigenous tribes. Hape is practiced many different ways, but often involves the preparation of powdered medicinal herbs inhaled through the nose. It is thought to create feelings of alertness and elevation beyond other herbal remedies.

To learn more, or to find out for yourself, check out their website and consider signing up for some Make & Mary classes!

High 5 Mobile Smoke Lounge

Visiting Portland? Want a private Cannabis lounge at a wedding, party, or other event? Then you are a great candidate for the High Tours Bus Service! This awesome business brings the Cannabis lounge to you with a newly renovated bus that is the perfect smoke lounge on the move.

With a slick and comfortable interior you can hire this bus to be wherever the party is– no worries about lingering smell or cleanup. Check out their website and find out if a mobile smoke lounge is for you!

Take a Tour with the Potlandia Experience!

portland weed tours

Weed and waterfalls? Oh my! This amazing company offers tours of some of Portland’s awesome Cannabis (and craft beer) scenes, making it the ultimate 420 event in Portland.

Whether you are a local or a tourist, you will love the Potlandia tour . Climb aboard the weed bus and visit Portland’s top dispensaries and learn about Cannabis cultivation in Portland.

This 420 adventure will also take you to some of Portland’s famous craft breweries, as well as food carts to combat the munchies. You will have a literal guide to all of the 420 friendly fun that Portland has to offer!

Want more nature in your 420 event? Consider their Weed and Waterfalls tour, which guides you through the area’s natural beauty. The tour goes down the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Byway, stopping at beautiful and historic viewpoints such as Crown Point Vista House and Bridal Veil Falls.

Enjoy all that nature has to offer in a 420 friendly environment without worrying about a designated driver or parking. Best part is that these tours run every weekend, and you can even book a private tour for you and your friends!

Questions about 420 Events in Portland, OR

Here are some common Q&A’s about Portland Cannabis events.

Can I smoke Cannabis anywhere I want in Portland, OR?

Technically, no. The law in Portland requires that Cannabis use be limited to private property and residences, Smoking or using cannabis products in public, such as a park or a restaurant, is still considered illegal and can come with a fine of up to 1,000 dollars.

However, it is worth noting that people do smoke on the street in Portland and that drug enforcement laws are notoriously lax. If you don’t want to smoke, edibles and vapes are fairly easy and discreet enough to use anywhere. As for smoking, consider the rules set by tobacco smokers. If you smoke anywhere people would smoke cigarettes, you are probably okay. Just remember the golden rule and don’t be a jerk.

Why doesn’t Portland have Cannabis Cafes like Amsterdam?

This is a good question. It is also a question that does not have a simple answer. Basically, Amsterdam has had a long time to create businesses and licensing around cannabis cafes, whereas Portland has had legal cannabis for less than a decade. Licenses and permits, such as the ones required for bars, need to be created and enforced for locations where patrons intend to use cannabis on site.

With Cannabis still being federally illegal it causes roadblocks, so these licenses must be done through local government. This means they will likely take forever to establish only to be contradictory and confusing when they do.

In addition, America’s ban on smoking tobacco has meant that the majority of building owners will not rent a commercial space to someone who intends to smoke it in. The insurance, fire prevention and cleaning concerns make it an unappealing option for most commercial landlords.

We hope that eventually Portland (and other cities) will have Cannabis Cafes akin to those in the Netherlands, but until then we have to be creative in our legal 420 spaces.

Where can I buy Cannabis products in Portland, OR?

The good news is that while Cannabis Cafes are almost impossible to license and open, Cannabis dispensaries are not. There are hundreds of different dispensaries in Portland, which has one of the highest concentrations of Cannabis dispensaries of any legal city in the USA.

For exceptional selection, special deals, and knowledgable service, visit Urban Farmacy Dispensary !

As one of the oldest dispensaries in the state, with over 500 positive reviews, they are sure to serve you right. You can also order Cannabis Delivery in Portland !

Whether you are a newbie looking to try Cannabis for the first time or an old pro looking for a new way to get high, Portland dispensaries have what you need. You do not need to be an Oregon resident to purchase legal cannabis either– as long as you have a valid government/state ID you should be good to go.

The best is yet to come: the future of 420 friendly Events in Portland

As time goes on Portland will only create more 420 events. These will include more festivals, workshops and even a few scrappy cannabis cafes fighting against the odds. If you are looking for 420 events it is important to keep your ear to the ground and check often for any pop-ups or spur of the moment events that might interest you. After all, Portland is all about keeping it weird!

Here Are Our Favorite Places for CBD, Edibles, and All Things Cannabis

By Portland Monthly Staff May 9, 2021

portland weed tours

Electric Lettuce’s Northeast location feels like stepping into a budtender’s funky living room.

Image: Michael Novak

Since recreational cannabis was legalized in Oregon in 2014, a lot of shops have flowered and bloomed around Portland.

Don't feel like checking them all out to find the best one for you? We got you, bud. Below are our favorites, divided by quadrants.

Skip to your quadrant: NW  // N //  NE  // SE // SW

Mindrite operates with a simple philosophy—cannabis should help you. And Mindite makes it easy with daily special offers, discounts for veterans and OMMP card holders, and a robust selection of flower, concentrates, and more. Fun fact: the store was once featured in an episode of What Would You Do? with John Quinones . Also, this should go without saying: Don’t buy a joint for some random-ass kids. 1780 NW Marshall St

Broadway Cannabis Market

Every dispensary offers something a little different. At Broadway Cannabis Market, founded in 2019, you'll get “a coffee shop meets an electronics store meets an art gallery,” per their website. And, yeah, it’s got that eclectic feel, but it’s never overwhelming. The tall, open ceilings and industrial space invite a sense of comfort while appreciating new strains, tinctures, vapes, and more. With another location in Beaverton, there’s plenty to explore.  427 NW Broadway Ave

The brightly lit, super-stocked space  inside a wooden house on N Mississippi belongs to a mini-chain (about 16 by our last count) known for accessible price points and amenable budtenders: a great first stop for inexperienced users.  4125 N Mississippi Ave

Bridge City Collective North Center

Behind opaque North Portland windows, a clean, modern space awaits. Bridge City Collective, which opened in 2010, focuses on the artistic, scientific, and medicinal aspects of marijuana, and offers tinctures extracts, salves, edibles, and more at their two locations. We like this one:  4312 N Williams Ave

Electric Lettuce

The sublimely branded chain, splashed with purple, orange, and blue, is like your überhip friend’s living room: warm lighting, cozy chairs, funky art, and, yes, vinyl. Fun fact: Portland branding firm of the moment OMFGCo designed this vibe from head to toe. With three locations in Portland, we prefer this one, in a converted two-story house:  203 NE Weilder St

ReLeaf Health

At ReLeaf, you’ll find everything from CBD bath confetti to hash oil, pre-rolls, topicals, edibles, kief, and more. One of ReLeaf’s budtenders will discreetly deliver your cannabis to your door. Free shipping on THC orders of $50 or more, and CBD orders of $40 or more.  3213 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd

Remember when weed was … illegal? Remember scrounging together some crumpled-up bills with a few friends just to score an ounce that didn’t get anyone that high anyway? Jayne remembers. Here in Oregon that taboo has disappeared, and since 2015, Jayne has offered a leisurely atmosphere, excellent service, and high-end products at low cost. Get comfy, bring your mom, and share a joint or two. 2145 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd

With flagship stores in Portland, Bend, and Cannon Beach, Oregrown has been a sleek staple in cannabis consumption and education. The vibes at their Portland store are just right, decked out with an open-concept floor plan, tall-windows, and a lushly white interior (juxtaposed with a brooding black exterior). Browse the bud or consider their house-made merch. With daily deals, original apparel, and a dedicated staff, you're bound to walk away with something.  111 NE 12th Ave

View this post on Instagram       A post shared by Oregrown (@oregrownindustries)

Built on a philosophy of marijuana as medicine, the Scandinavian-chic Hawthorne spot analyzes 64 of the plant’s compounds to break down effects at a micro level. If any place can convince buttoned-up parents that weed can alleviate back pain and migraines, this is it. 916 SE Hawthorne Blvd

Cannabliss & Co.

Cannabliss’s flagship Southeast Portland store—a 1913 firehouse with huge white doors, original brick, an old alarm bell, even a brass fire pole—was Oregon's first medical marijuana dispensary. Since opening their Firestation 23 shop, Cannabliss now has five stores, with locations in Eugene and Springfield.  1917 SE 7th Ave

Serra's got "quality drugs" for all your complex feelings. Choose your medicine based on mood using a classification system guide with “feeling symbols,” like energy, relaxation, relief, creativity, and more. This mini-chain is like a cannabis terrarium: windows, glass, iron-framed displays, premium greenery. Indulge in cannabis-infused treats like delicate chocolates and caramels and sweet and sour gumdrops. Graphic designers and typographers will appreciate Serra's stellar font—Lydian, we're told by our deputy art director (nerd alert!). We like this location:  2519 SE Belmont St

View this post on Instagram       A post shared by Serra (@shop_serra)

Chalice Farms

Lined with chic live-edge wood cabinets and shelves, this outdoorsy-themed chain excels at no-pressure encounters, whether you’re searching for CBD/THC muscle rubs or trading yarns about smoking resin in the 1980s.  Don’t miss  Chalice’s house-made lines, which include edibles, oils, and tinctures. With seven shops, a cannabis diary, a consumer club, and a web series, Chalice is so much more than just your local weed store.  823 SW Naito Pkwy

Maybe you’re looking to try a range of products and scale back on the amount of time you spend inside dispensaries. Or, for accessibility reasons, maybe you want your cannabis delivered to you. Try Green Box , Oregon's first licensed cannabis delivery service.

Marijuana is mainstream but weed tourism isn’t booming. Here’s why.

Bus tours. Smoking lounges. Wake-and-bake drag brunch. Weed travel is growing but hasn’t yet reached its high.

portland weed tours

LOS ANGELES — At the LitCo dispensary downtown, Brett “Rollan Buds" Davis approached me with a weed waiver. “It’s so you don’t blame us for getting high,” said Davis, who owns Weed Bus Los Angeles and was guiding the Movie Set Tour on a recent Thursday afternoon. With two joints and a container of edibles in my bag, I took full responsibility.

Davis sealed our group of nine inside the bus like astronauts rocketing to space. Immediately, everyone lit up. Joints were passed among friends or savored privately.

I’d been here before — or at least somewhere like it. In 2014, I boarded a cannabis tour bus in Denver soon after Colorado became the first state to legalize recreational marijuana. All of us were giddy, even before the THC kicked in.

Almost 10 years have passed since that memorable ride, and weed is no longer such a novelty. Since then nearly two dozen states have legalized adult-use cannabis and more could be switching sides. “I think we are seeing the last of the elected officials who oppose cannabis,” said Wanda James, an activist and co-founder of Simply Pure Dispensary in Denver.

Despite the momentum, obstacles in the burgeoning cannabis economy have surprisingly hindered innovations in weed tourism. For one, marijuana is still illegal federally, which means states must craft their own rules. In addition, a majority of states ban smoking in public places and many have amended their clean indoor air acts to include cannabis.

Legalization opened the door to buying recreational weed, but stumbled on the next obvious step: where to enjoy it with like-minded souls. Imagine a world with only liquor stores but few places where you can raise your glass — no pubs or baseball stadium beer stands or winery tasting rooms. That’s the conundrum weed tourism is facing. You can smoke, just not here.

“You’d think that cannabis tourism would be booming, but it isn’t,” said Rosie Mattio, founder and chief executive of Mattio Communications , which works with cannabis companies. But, she added, “I see the promise of it, and the concepts are coming to life.”

Marijuana jobs are becoming a refuge for retail and restaurant workers

Still, several destinations have become pioneers in the green rush. And each city approaches cannabis tourism with its own signature flavor.

Las Vegas is pouncing on pot; one hotel plans to open this year with an entire cannabis-friendly floor. Michigan created the Cannabis Trail , which includes a calendar of events, statewide dispensary map, culinary offerings and hotel recommendations. New Jersey is a year into legally lighting up, and all eyes are watching developments in Atlantic City.

“The cannabis traveler looks like travelers from every other category. They are dog lovers, foodies and outdoorsy. They range in age from 21 to 90,” said Todd Aaronson, chief executive of Visit Modesto, which created the MoTown CannaPass in 2021.

To check up on the state of cannabis tourism, I flew out West, where the recreational movement has a steady foothold. My high priority: to see how Denver , Los Angeles and Portland , Ore., roll out the green carpet for cannabis tourists.

Denver: For an outdoorsy high

With a wealth of dispensaries, buying cannabis in Denver is easy. But for travelers, consuming it has been more difficult, especially after state legislators amended a 2006 clean indoor air act to include marijuana and vaping. In April 2021, however, the Denver mayor created a marijuana hospitality licensing program .

Until 2027, most licenses are available only to a pool of “social equity applicants” who are low-income residents or Coloradans impacted by previous marijuana-related arrests. To date, the Cannabis Experience and Colorado Cannabis Tours are the only tour operators with a license for mobile consumption.

“There is tons of opportunity, but not a lot of competition,” said Sarah Woodson, founder of the Color of Cannabis and the Cannabis Experience, which leads mural, taco and city highlights tours.

Denver, then and now, is the state’s epicenter of pot tourism. Its cannabis-centric diversions naturally blend into — and even enhance — the Rocky Mountain-high lifestyle. As Sen. John Hickenlooper, the former governor, told me: “One of the reasons tourists will come here to go skiing rather than Utah is because when they finish skiing, they can relax and ingest some marijuana. They feel like they had a more enjoyable vacation.”

The dispensary with ‘a whole charcuterie of cannabis’

At Simply Pure, I stepped into the lobby of what might be the country’s first African American-owned dispensary and immediately exhaled. The waiting room was more tranquil and less paranoid than the last Colorado retailer I visited in 2014. Mirrored windows and an armed guard at the door do not induce calm.

A man named Moses sat behind a glass window, his beatific smile parting his bushy beard. I handed him my driver’s license, which would get more action than my credit card, and waited for the door to the inner sanctum to click open.

Moses, the lead budologist, led me to one of three stations where budtenders provide personalized service on par with buying an engagement ring or a securing a loan. Moses was all mine for as long as I had questions, concerns and cash burning in my pocket.

“You can get a whole charcuterie of cannabis,” he said, as we stood before glass cases and shelves displaying products that you can eat, drink, smoke and dab.

My first legal pot purchase in Colorado was a sticky yellow lollipop that I never finished. Nearly 10 years later, Moses was showing me gourmet chocolate bars, sea salt popcorn and pre-rolled joints packed in artful tins.

The BYO weed lounge

To consume my purchases, Moses recommend Tetra Lounge, which operates like a private club. Generally, consumption lounges allow guests to smoke weed they’ve purchased beforehand or bought on-site, depending on licensing.

On a Monday afternoon, owner Dewayne Benjamin was behind the counter welcoming visitors. Guests bring their own weed and pay a membership fee ($20 a day), which grants them access to the couches, paraphernalia, mural-splashed backyard and a tub of bottled water.

Benjamin waived the fee for me — it was a slow day; I was one of three people — and handed me an ashtray. I sat on a low-slung couch facing a photo gallery of legendary stoners, including Bob Marley, Seth Rogen and Snoop Dogg. Plumes of smoke drifted by like morning fog.

The tour that includes a grow facility

Around lunchtime, I headed to the meeting place for Colorado Cannabis Tours, which has been offering excursions since legalization and earned its mobile consumption license a few days after my visit. Our guide, Gina, who declined to provide a last name, handed me a joint and an edible the color of Boo Berry cereal.

My outing with Cannabis Experience had been canceled because of low attendance, so I was relieved to see two other people on the bus. The married couple were from Texas, where cannabis is not legal. They said it was so freeing to be here, but also a little unsettling. “When we left the dispensary, I thought the cops would follow us,” said Heather, who chose Colorado because of its mountains and cannabis lifestyle.

The bus took us on a spin through the life cycle of cannabis. We toured the Del Mundo grow facility and picked up some goodies at its dispensary. At a glass-blowing studio, artist Chris Schutz cranked up a flame and transformed a piece of glass into a pipe that the couple added to their pile of souvenirs.

“Weed is definitely part of our culture at this point,” said Gina, the tour guide.

The hotel is building its own lounge

Chris Chiari is attempting to revolutionize 420-friendly lodging at the Patterson Inn, where I spent one night. The owner invited me inside the attached carriage house that he is transforming into a cannabis lounge.

Once he resolves the HVAC filtering issue, the 1890s B&B will become the model for his grand plan to create a collection of boutique properties that will cater to guests who fancy a pre-shuteye smoke.

“I will offer it as an amenity to guests, guests of guests and annual members,” he said. “I’m the place you will come to right before bed.”

Arrowhead Manor, which is near Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre about 16 miles from Denver, allows smoking on its decks and outdoor spaces. The property can also arrange cannabis dinners. During my night there, I discovered a smoker’s kit in the vending machine, next to the Honey Buns. However, as the only guest, I didn’t smell any smoke, just pine-scented mountain air.

For now, Denver feels like it’s on the cusp of something great, but like a skier on a new run, it is taking slow and cautious turns to avoid a messy fall.

Los Angeles: The Amsterdam of SoCal

The cannabis lounges on Santa Monica Boulevard are a short downhill walk from a row of posh hotels on Sunset Boulevard. A number of cannabis industry people had told me that many properties will look away if guests smoke on their room’s private balcony or by the rooftop pool. But with a hefty fine, I wasn’t prepared to risk it.

California’s Clean Indoor Air Act requires that up to 80 percent of a hotel’s guest rooms are smoke-free, but properties have the authority to go all-in at 100 percent.

Based on the sniff test, weed is everywhere in the Los Angeles area. But West Hollywood is the A-list spot for cannabis celebutantes. If Cher from “Clueless” grew up to be a toker, she would definitely shop and puff here.

The celebrity-owned dispensary

At Zen Cannabis, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary Thursday, the staff is discreet about its celebrity clientele. A few blocks away, however, workers often drop “Woody” into conversation. That’s Woody Harrelson, the actor and co-proprietor of the Woods, a retail shop and consumption lounge that opened last year.

The city of West Hollywood is positioning itself to become a SoCal Amsterdam. According to a map created by the Emerald Village West Hollywood, the city’s official marketing organization for licensed cannabis businesses, there are eight dispensaries, including two with lounges — with more on the horizon.

For now, visitors can light up at the Woods and Artist Tree, a multilevel space with an art gallery, a dispensary and an indoor/outdoor lounge with table service and special events, such as a wake-and-bake drag brunch show and a Spoken Herb night. “Having this safe space where we can come together is a completely different experience that we aren’t used to having,” said Meghan Pool, a manager at the WeHo outpost.

On a chilly weekday afternoon, I connected with Cal Wolfe, the manager who, when not putting out small fires (such as a guy illegally smoking in the back), showed me around the Woods. He told me that the company — and especially Harrelson — advocates for two main causes: small family-run farms and the release of nonviolent cannabis offenders. Its upside-down marijuana leaf is a symbol of their commitment to right the wrong.

“We’re not free until everyone is freed,” said Wolfe, as we stood before NFTs of artworks created by incarcerated cannabis users. “The leaf will not face up until everyone is freed from cannabis crimes.”

To consume their purchases, guests can enter a colorful oasis called the Ganja Giggle Garden. For $20, they can sit among a tropical profusion of plants sheltering Buddhist sculptures and secluded seating. A bar sells THC-infused drinks and offers free tea, coffee and water. For now, customers can only smoke in one of the enclosed cabanas, but Wolfe said once they install proper ventilation, visitors can light up outdoors.

California law prohibits a cannabis business from serving alcohol, but the Woods figured out how to have both: A door will separate the dispensary and garden from the alcohol bar, which could open by the end of the month. Patrons must keep their indulgences on the appropriate side. Wolfe said the venue’s working title is Holy Water or Mars Bar, a nod to the other celebrity co-owner, Bill Maher.

The hotel with pot brownie room service

Despite its ubiquitous no-smoking signs, Hotel Ziggy was cannabis tolerant. At the front desk, I asked for a menu from Urbn Leaf West Hollywood. The nearby dispensary created a curated list of products that do not emit smoke, such as vegan brownies and infused lemonade.

“Wyld’s sleepy time is the most popular order from the hotel,” said Kurt Haaker, the outlet’s general manager, referring to the edible company’s elderberry flavor. He said the store plans to open a lounge and will soon offer delivery service, so that guests won’t have to dash across the Sunset Strip for their night cap.

Portland: The den of DIY

Paul Stanford’s desk was strewn with pads of hemp paper and bags of herb. When I met with him in Portland, the founder of the Hemp and Cannabis Foundation told me how activists had tried several times to legalize cannabis, starting in 1986. To illustrate their fight, he pointed at a green campaign sign urging voters to back Prop 80. Two years later, the measure passed.

“We have more than 400 dispensaries in Oregon, and the price is the lowest in the country,” he said. “It’s rare to go in a park or on the street and not smell it.” (Even so, outdoor consumption is illegal here.)

Portland has no shortage of dispensaries, including many chains that run counter to the state’s indie spirit and fondness for mom-and-pop shops. But the City of Roses lacks other cannabis attractions. Since the state legalized marijuana in 2015, several tour operators and consumption lounges have opened and closed. But unlike Denver and Los Angeles, there does not seem to be any rumbling of new offerings.

The nonexistent tour

Even the Potlandia Experience tour I had booked was called off because of low interest.

“I kind of have a monopoly on the Portland market, but it’s still been kind of rough,” said Matt Onkka, who has been running the city’s only operating cannabis tour company since 2019. “The pandemic really ruined it.”

Leia Flynn, the co-founder of Flight Club, the members-only cafe in Portland and clubhouse in Oregon City, can relate.

“I feel like there needs to be one of these in each neighborhood, like bars are,” Flynn said. “But I’m it. They don’t have any lounges. It’s just me.”

The apothecary/dispensary

Without the guiding hand of a tour, I set out on my own to learn more about Portland’s cannabis culture, basically knocking on doors like a canvasser. I started at Home Grown Apothecary and Dispensary, which was coincidentally a planned stop on Onkka’s tour.

Inside, I was greeted warmly by Andi Keller, the media director who also makes candles for the apothecary. The room was homey and healing with a fireplace, vintage couch with throw pillows and a fringe lamp that emitted a honey glow.

Before we entered the dispensary, which was concealed behind a door, I asked Keller how much I could legally purchase. “You can essentially leave a dispensary with a shopping cart of cannabis,” she said. But this is no CVS of cannabis: The store supports organic farmers and small crafters who mirror the staff’s composition: women, minorities, LGBTQ+, immigrants. “We don’t want big pharma cannabis,” she said.

Home Grown is just off Sandy Boulevard, also known as the Green Mile. I also passed Nectar, Electric Lettuce and Tree House Collective.

Pot entrepreneur Shawn Kemp is lighting up Seattle again

The pot history center

To continue my education, Stanford suggested I drop by Oregon Grown, a dispensary that doubles as the Library of Congress of Cannabis. After buzzing me in, Michael Bachara led me to his wall of posters for festivals and marches. He pulled out books, photos and pamphlets that documented the push for legalization, which I looked at while he helped customers.

One of the most memorable artifacts is a green-painted wooden sign that read “Cannabis Cafe,” a former consumption lounge in the basement of the building that houses the dispensary. It was open for two years, before the medical community raised concerns about secondhand smoke. It closed in 2011.

“It had a big bar like ‘Cheers,’” Bachara said, his voice tinged with nostalgia. “We had bingo nights and comedy nights. We were like a family.”

Bachara is not done fighting. He is filing an initiative that will allow public cannabis lounges with indoor consumption. He is seeking 250,000 signatures. A customer withdrawing money from the ATM said she would support the petition.

The lounge with all the trinkets — and a place to sleep

The Flight Lounge is the only cannabis-friendly club in Oregon and the only cafe of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, according to Flynn, a legal assistant for the Oregon Cannabusiness Compliance Counsel. The venues occupy a fuzzy gray space. They only accept members who pay a one-time fee of $10, plus $5 per visit, which is waived if they order food. (Available only at the Portland location.)

Like Tetra Lounge, guests must bring their own cannabis, but Flight Club provides the bongs, ashtrays and entertainment — movies, pool tables, live music, drag queen shows.

“Our passion was to create a safe space for people. A lot of these people risk getting a ticket or evicted for smoking,” she said. “The food is just a perk.”

Flynn rents out two rooms above the lounge and throws in temporary membership as an amenity. I didn’t need to go downstairs to indulge: Room 420 came with a fine selection of bongs and ashtrays. But I didn’t want to squander my membership.

I scanned the menu hanging behind the counter, my eye stopping at “stoner cereal.” On a display case filled with CBD tincture and giant cookies, I read a sign that explained why the lounge could remain open and Flynn was always in motion: “We are a private club. We are not a place of employment and have no employees.”

Flynn and her business partner were running the whole show: They cooked, served, cleared and cleaned the tables. They also greeted, joked with and encouraged their guests.

“Do your homework,” she called out to a member who often studied at the cafe.

I settled into a table next to two brunch buddies who were digging into plates piled high with French toast, shrimp and grits and breakfast meats. Smoke rose from their table, as the women toked between bites.

Opposite me, a guy dug into a reusable shopping bag and extracted a bong as long as his forearm. He considered it for a minute before selecting a bong from a corner shelf where, in a more traditional restaurant, the staff would stockpile the condiments.

Basin Recreation to host noxious weed tour

portland weed tours

Summit County’s weeds division is hosting a Community Noxious Weeds Tour Saturday, May 18 to educate residents on the “most-wanted” weeds in the county.

Noxious weeds threaten ecosystems and agricultural and recreational economies.

Summit Cooperative Weed Management Areas project manager Sara Jo Dickens says these weeds can also impact safety and natural resources.

“Garlic mustard is an example because it does produce this chemical that shuts down germination of other plants,” she said. “So we lose plant diversity, it impacts our soils.”

Since Garlic Mustard weakens plants around it, it can also make trees more susceptible to wildfires and deadly diseases.

“The big concern is that it suppresses the fungus,” Dickens said. “These fungus species are incredibly important to tree health. They help them especially in drought.”

Residents can meet Summit County Weed Superintendent Dave Bingham and Weed Enforcement Officer Dan Pena at the Spark Trailhead east off Highway 40 and Richardson Flat Road for the tour from 9 to noon.
