A Quick Introduction to Cycling in Slovenia

Slovenia is perfect for cycling tours. This Central European gem boasts a continental climate with moderate summers and chilly winters. During the primary cycling season, from late spring to early autumn , expect pleasant temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). In the peak of summer, the mercury might soar a bit higher, especially in the coastal regions.

This favorable climate ensures scenic rides, allowing you to dive deep into the breathtaking beauty of the Slovenian landscapes. Bicycle tours in Slovenia are truly enchanting. Naturally, no journey in Slovenia is complete without indulging in its remarkable cuisine . From creamy potica to the hearty kranjska klobasa, Slovenian gastronomy unveils a unique blend of flavors and traditions.

During your excursions, you’ll be tempted to sample iconic treats like štruklji, jota, ajdovi žganci, and a variety of regional dishes. And don’t bypass Slovenia’s outstanding wines and cheeses , which perfectly complement the meals and provide an ideal wind-down after a day on the saddle.

Local experts

Hassle-free, completely customizable, book with confidence, unbeatable support, things to know.

We offer road cycling, trekking cycling and mountain biking holidays. Our  road cycling holidays  are suitable for avid road cycling enthusiasts whose endurance is high enough to withstand multiple long cycling days in a row.

Our  trekking cycling holidays  are suitable for anyone, as the stages are short enough for most people, and the terrain is not technical — mostly tarmac and gravel. They will still be enjoyed most by people who cycle occasionally and feel comfortable with multiple days in a row on the saddle and some moderate climbing. For those looking for more leisurely cycling holidays, we offer an e-bike option.

Our  e-MTB holidays  are suitable for most people comfortable on a mountain bike who are fine with some rougher gravel roads and steeper hills, made easier with electric assistance. However, the  single trails MTB holidays  are suitable mostly for avid mountain bikers, as they tackle technical trails and fast descents, but are very adjustable to your skills and style of riding.

On our  guided tours , you will have professional local guides. Our guides will make sure that you will have expert guidance combined with great fun and a memorable experience.

We are always looking for the perfect fit for you. We use a few different accommodation providers that fit our standards but they are subjected to availability, especially in the high season. We can also adjust the holiday, keeping in mind your preferences and budget and can always find a more suitable solution for your taste.

We recommend booking as early as possible. Most of our tours run through very touristy places where accommodation is limited. Most of the great places start getting booked for summer before spring.

It really depends on the level of your restriction. Vegetarian options are fairly easy to find in Slovenia, but vegan dishes, on the other hand, are extremely hard to come by in rural areas of the country and in smaller towns. Please note that the places where we stop for lunch are often traditional and may have difficulties accommodating you outside of their standard menu. We suggest you keep this in mind.

If you want to, sure! We are well aware that some people love to stay in groups while others prefer some more alone time on their trip. We wanted to give you the opportunity to do things your way. It is your holiday, after all! As long as you respect the group timings and locations designated by your guide, please feel free to customize your itinerary and create your own adventure!

Depending on the tour, generally late spring (May) and early autumn (September) are the best times, summer is of course also always great and some of our holidays are also possible in winter! Read more  about cycling seasons in Slovenia.

Most of the tours can be done even in light rain, as long as you dress accordingly. It is not unusual in the summer that there are afternoon thunderstorms, so early starts are advisable. If the weather looks really bad, we will try to adjust the tour or skip a stage with a shuttle.

Our tours can be adapted to any bike type, whether road, gravel, or mountain bike. We are in constant communication with you to find the optimal conditions for your cycling holidays in Slovenia.

The most versatile option is a gravel bike, even if you are coming on a road cycling holiday. It does not really affect your road performance while allowing you to take some scenic backroads that can be in a slightly worse state than the main ones. A gravel bike is usually more comfortable as well.

In any way, Slovenia is a very diverse country and there is something for every cyclist. Whichever bike you choose, we will find the perfect route for you to take on your cycling holidays.

Cycle Around Julian Alps - Slovenia

This was the first self guided trip I had done. The service from life adventures was excellent all the way through from my initial email enquiry to my final transport. I really enjoyed the self guided experience. It was good to be able to set my own pace and itinerary. I also didn't get lonely as I ran into other people doing similar tours. Life adventures also provided maps and comprehensive instructions that even somebody like me with no sense of direction managed. I would highly recommend Slovenia as a cycle destination. A beautiful country but not as busy as Italy. Most of the roads were quiet and some were on bike trails.

We just completed the Austria/Slovenia plus Ljubljana trip. It was a wonderful trip in a hidden gem of a country. Stunning scenery every day, charming towns, friendly people, interesting hotels and good food all made for a memorable time. This was our 19th trip with Experience Plus! Obviously, we like Experience Plus! The guides are the heart of their trips. They are informed about the countries we visit, provide extra cultural activities that enhance our understanding of the country, and are always there to help when needed. In addition, great customer service, good cycling routes, interesting hotels, and delicious food make for a quality trip each time. We love this way of traveling and recommend it to others.

The heart of SCS

slovenia cycle tours

Our base is located in the region called  Pomurje , a level plain of farmland, forests, pretty villages and thermal spas, fringed to the north-east by the gentle wooded hills of the Goricko National Park. It is divided by the river Mura and bordered to the south-west by the rolling hills of  Prlekija , renowned for their vineyards and wineries. A network of cycle routes and by-ways has long made this a favourite but unspoiled destination for cyclists, walkers and nature lovers.

So, come and join me, Paul Terence Wadkin, on the sunny side of the Alps, so you can see why I, as a cyclist, fell in LOVE with this beautiful, un-spoilt, quiet, & safe, hidden jewel of central Europe called SLOVENIA.

Slovenia bike tours.

This country has abundant beauty, from lakes and mountains to caves. Touring Slovenia’s many castles is one way to navigate the country, but some tourists use the numerous white wine vineyards as a guide.

Cyclists will love the varied and beautiful landscapes—from the picturesque alpine villages to the spectacular Mediterranean coastline and mountains.

Slovenia is perfect for cyclists of all levels and abilities—there are plenty of trails for families who enjoy relaxing, less strenuous rides through countryside. For the more advanced cyclist, there are mountain passes galore, or go for bragging rights: traverse the entirety of the country by bicycle and truly see “it” all.

“Loved cycling through Slovenia. Warm, friendly people and spectacular scenery made it very, very special. The ride begins in the majestic Julian Alps and courses its way through verdant farm lands and remote villages.”

The Vršič Pass is the highest road in the Eastern Julian Alps, reaching an altitude of 1,611 m. An aura of calm and tranquility is palpable from all angles and corners of this awe-inspiring natural wonder.

Cycling down to the coast in seven days!

This popular cycling tour takes you through Slovenia's most famous historical attractions amid a stunningly diverse landscape. From the cultural capital through the undulating landscape of the limestone Karst, riddled with caves and dotted with castles and churches, to the sparkling Adriatic Sea; there is something for everyone.

As a pre-trip, have a look at our  Lakes & Cities Short Tour starting at Lake Bled!

Day 1: ARRIVAL TO  LJUBLJANA .

The Slovene capital: visit the historic old town and marvel at the ornate, old-world architecture sitting in the shadow of the Ljubljana Castle perched high on a hill and standing guard over the old town and city centre. From its tower, you get a commanding view of the city and surrounding mountains. Enjoy a meal in the old town and then round it off with a beer beside the Ljubljanica River, or on a riverboat ride.

Day 2: LJUBLJANA - VRHNIKA (↔ 39 km, ↑ 220 m, ↓ 230 m).

Your first cycling day will be a gentle ride across an immense 160-sq km marshy plain: the Ljubljana Moors (Ljubljansko Barje). The lovely Krim Mountain will dominate your view here. Head up to the hilltop church of Saint Ana for an amazing panoramic view of Slovenia. Along the way you can see the remnants of the world's highest railway viaduct in Borovnica. Before you arrive at your destination, be sure to visit the Technical Museum in Bistra Castle, where you’ll find an interesting exhibition of president Tito’s cars.

Day 3: VRHNIKA – POSTOJNA (↔ 34 km; 44 km with a side trip to nature reserve Rakov Škocjan, ↑ 590 m, ↓ 350 m).

Today you'll experience the real Slovenian countryside as you cycle past the beautiful Slivnica Mountain and the magical disappearing lakes of Cerknica and Planina, and marvel at this vast world of limestone. You can stop for a picnic lunch amid some of nature’s most incredible landscape formations, including two natural bridges, at the Rakov Škocjan nature reserve.

Day 4: POSTOJNA – ŠTANJEL AREA (↔ 42 km; 48 km with a side trip to Predjama Castle,↑ 410 m, ↓ 790 m).

Today you will start with a visit to the beautiful  Postojna caves , the most extensive cave system in Slovenia, covering a total of 21 kilometers. The 1,5 hour tour will take you through a fairy tale world, full of large and colorful stalactites and stalagmites, not forgetting the unique “human fish”, a mysterious creature that lives in dark pools inside the caves.  Then head to the impenetrable fortress of Predjama Castle , in a crevasse halfway up a 123-metre cliff-face; once home to a vivacious and daring knight. Erasmus kept a whole army at bay by utilizing the Predjama Caves to sneak out for supplies. Take the tour and learn how Erasmus met his untimely demise in less than poetic circumstances , as he was literally caught with his pants down.

Day 5: ŠTANJEL AREA– LIPICA – DIVAČA (↔ 48 km, ↑ 630 m, ↓ 370 m).

Today you'll cycle to the stud farm of Lipica where you can visit beautiful thoroughbred Lipizzaner horses, whose glistening white coats and gentle, graceful dancing have earned them a worldwide reputation. Take a tour in a traditional carriage, and visit them close up in their stables. You can also visit the unusual but very interesting “War Museum” set inside an old Venetian tower.

Day 6: DIVAČA – MUGGIA (↔ 38 km, ↑ 280 m, ↓ 700 m).

If you missed Postojna caves no worries, this morning you can visit Škocjan Caves; no less interesting but far less frequented. They are even listed as a UNESCO natural monument ! You can take a diversion into the Italian town of Trieste - once an important port with its worldly flair and wonderful atmosphere. Visit Miramare Castle, the cathedral and Piazza Unita central square. Trieste was once part of Slovenia whilst under the rule of the Austrian monarchy. Relax with a cappuccino in the many old-fashioned cafes. The day ends in Muggia, south of Trieste, where you can enjoy a gelato ice cream in the old town.

Day 7: MUGGIA – PIRAN (↔ 37 km; 48 km with a side trip, ↑ 320 m, ↓ 330 m).

For your last day you'll cycle along the coastal road on a new cycling path following the old railway line. Enjoy great vistas of Slovenia's modest, yet lovely coast, and Trieste Bay. A stop in the trendy resort of Portorož is a must. The trip ends in the gorgeous little Venetian harbour town of Piran .

Day 8: DEPARTURE.

After breakfast your tour ends. However, you can prolong your stay in Piran, take a one-way boat trip or day cruise to Venice or continue cycling by taking our Croatia  Istrian Coastal Tour down to Pula or Bike and Boat tour of Kvarner bay.

First hand experience

We stayed at Hisa Posebne Sorte with our cycle tour of Slovenia (we went with Helia - fantastic by the way). This charming guesthouse is nestled in a tiny village in the heart of wine country, the accommodation is large, comfortable, clean, and every need catered for. The views are outstanding. What makes this place truly special is two things, firstly, the hospitality truly is outstanding. The hosts have a wonderful personal touch, and we are truly grateful to them. Secondly the restaurant, lovingly handmade, and then the food, exceptional. In fact, it was so special that we got engaged here! It is a very popular location for weddings, so we may be back. Highly recommend for a weekend away, a relaxing stay, or a wedding!

Trans Slovenia e-bike tour

I had the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable bike tour organized by Greenhills-Bike. Jerney and Ursa, the tour guides were absolutely fantastic, providing exceptional service and creating a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout the journey. Their expertise, enthusiasm, and genuine care for our experience made the tour truly memorable. It was evident that they went above and beyond to ensure we had a fantastic time.

Steve H., North Carolina (USA)

E-bike tour Škofja Loka

Like most tour activities, the guide either makes or breaks the experience. Ursa made our trip exceptional – from logistics to explaining the local culture to making the time letting a rain shower pass a great experience in and of itself. Can’t recommend Ursa or Greenhills enough.

Wine cycling tour in Slovenia (Karst)

Greenhills takes you for a lovely ride in the exciting Slovenian scenery of the Karst region. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and took us to paths suitable to our skills, but still pushed us a bit to feel the excitement even more! The bikes felt solid and were easy to ride. We ended our trip with lunch at a local family-driven restaurant, where they served amazing food. Would do it again if I could!

Put Slovenia On Your Cycling Bucket List

With farmhouse pit stops, wine-festival detours, and endless alpine climbs, this is a bike rider’s paradise.

The first brushstrokes of autumn had already splattered the forests with orange, yellow, and red when our crew convened in the ski town of Kranjska Gora in Slovenia’s mountainous northwestern corner. There, we stocked up on tubes, bananas, and chocolate, and reorganized the packs on our gravel and mountain bikes. Just a day after two Slovenes had taken the top podium places at the Tour de France, the roads were packed with cyclists, and it seemed as if every other person was wearing yellow.

Our group—a cartographer, a photographer, two sustainable-tourism experts, and me— pedaled past Kranjska Gora’s famous ski jump to the starting point of our journey: the newly launched Bike Slovenia Green cycling route. The 180-mile journey is the world’s first multi-stage route to layover in only green-certified cities, towns, and villages. Our path, which links asphalt roads, gravel paths, and dirt trails across six stages and seven sustainability-focused stops, would traverse the length of Slovenia’s western border, from the Julian Alps at the intersection of the Slovenian, Italian, and Austrian borders, to the Adriatic Sea.

BSG’s intention isn’t to overpower cyclists with herculean distances or elevation gains. “This path was not meant to approximate the Tour de France,” says Matija Klanjšček, the cartographer and our guide for the journey. But our crew would see plenty of climbing. On average, each day would deliver around 30 miles and about 2,700 feet of ascent—through alpine landscapes, vineyard-covered foothills, and the exposed limestone of the country’s southwestern Karst region, before we arrived at the coast.

All Access

The experience plays to Slovenia’s strengths: biodiversity, cultural spontaneity, and going local. Instead of tailgating on crowded roads and jockeying for parking, we’d take shelter in a farmer’s barn, and see our reflections in the limestone riverbed of glacial waters. In Slovenia, going green means letting the land dictate your path through the country.

slovenia

We entered Triglav National Park—home to the 9,396-foot Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest summit—on the way to Lake Bled, our first overnight layover. The rail trail sent us through a valley dense with oak, larch, and chestnut trees. The peaks were dusted with snow, and alongside us, rivers broke off into streams and amassed into rivers again. We passed a bucolic farm where horses and a dozen cows roamed as a family gathered hay. On the field’s outskirts, wooden beehive boxes buzzed, painted red, green, yellow, and blue.

After an easy warmup ride of 25 miles, we finished the day on the shores of Lake Bled. The Bled Castle, built on 11th-century foundations, hung on a bluff above us, and an indigo-orange dusk hung in the sky above that. “In Slovenia, just bringing in tourists without a sustainability strategy is worse than having no tourists,” says Jana Apih, a founding partner and director at GoodPlace, the auditor of the Slovenian Tourism Board’s go-green initiative. “Our hope for Bike Slovenia Green is that destinations here, and elsewhere in the world, realize you can be responsible and popular. The larger goal is to show responsibility and tourism are the same.”

slovenia

The next day, we followed Triglav National Park’s eastern boundary toward Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest natural and permanent lake. A steep climb brought us onto forestry roads through shepherd villages, where farmers let their cows graze the high-altitude pastures. One cluster of rustic cabins, the Planina Zajamniki, rewarded us with panoramas of the Julian Alps rising beyond the dew-covered grass and wooden-shake-roof homes. The cows watched our gaggle pedal past the string of summits.

When a bout of rain interrupted our ride, we took shelter under a barn’s eaves. The farmer approached, offering to make us tea. “Are you normal to cycle in this weather?” she asked, inviting us inside her home. “It’s okay to be slow.”

“These stages are kept at manageable lengths because it gives us time to soak in the old traditions, but another reason is the consistent climbing,” Klanjšček says. “This is a country in the mountains. That has helped cyclists like Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič train for and eventually win in Paris.”

When we rode on from the farm, a basin amid the alps spread out before us. Entering the townships surrounding Lake Bohinj, we fell into a rhythm of undulating blacktop ascents and forested descents on trail paths. High-point vistas laid out our upcoming route, each hilltop capped by a church and bell tower, and surrounded by mountain homes accessorized with neat stacks of firewood and precise, leafy-green vegetable gardens.

We cycled around the lake to Bohinjska Bistrica, the largest town in the valley. Our layover for the night was the boutique Sunrose 7. The bike-friendly, 18-room hotel occupied a building constructed in 1890, a relaxed-chic intermingling of tile, leather, and wood overlooking the Belca River. The staff, like many Slovenes, were proud of their specific region, its products, and the resulting self-sufficiency.

Much of the hotel’s food was harvested or made in Bohinj, including the cheese, meats, fish, jams, teas, liqueurs, and honey. Even the lobby’s wood-burning stoves heated the building’s water with wood from Bohinj.

“Today’s tourism trend always uses the word ‘authenticity,’ but using the word isn’t enough,” says Jan Klavora, GoodPlace’s other founding partner. “For behavior to be real, locals should believe it’s right for their community. If visitors enjoy it, great, but not as the first concern.”

The night’s dinner table bulged with Bohinjsko: Boards of sausage, roasted peppers, and cheese competed for space with still-hot bread, fresh salad, and stew made from sauerkraut, potatoes, and beans. At meal’s end, the waitress replaced our empty beer mugs with a round of pear schnapps. We touched glasses, made eye contact with each other, and sipped. Klavora looked at me and said: “It will be interesting to see what you, as a foreigner, think about whether we are real.”

slovenia

The third day began with a transfer aboard the scenic Bohinj railway. After a four-mile trip through a tunnel in the Alps, the scenery transformed. The mountain villages took a coastal tilt as we chugged into the lush Soča River Valley, which flows into and acts as a conduit for the Adriatic Sea and its Mediterranean clime.

Back on our saddles in the town of Most na Soči, we rode out across a spectrum of green—the chartreuse valley floor, the emerald hillsides—along vacant, traffic-free roads. Stands of beech trees met grass meadows that spilled into mossy gorges. Below us, the Soča River flashed an electric turquoise.

“Are your legs feeling Slovenian yet? Because your liver is about to.”

By afternoon, steep alpine topography became precoastal wine terroir, and we reached Slovenia’s Goriška Brda region, adjacent to Italy. We rolled between multi-tiered vineyards, cypress trees, and orchards of peaches, apricots, and olives. Our route tapered onto dirt paths between rows of grapevines and up a final climb to the town of Šmartno, where the locals were already several glasses into a weekend wine festival. Klavora, riding ahead of me, yelled over his shoulder: “Are your legs feeling Slovenian yet? Because your liver is about to.”

Our crew cleaned up and headed to the Marjan Simčič Winery, where five generations have produced vintage wines—including the area’s best-known variety, the crisp white ribolla. A local wine expert poured us glasses of naturally grown whites and reds (70 percent of production at Marjan Simčič is the former). Slovenia’s geography gives its culture an organic, elastic strength, one tested by the country’s break from Yugoslavia in the 1990s. You can’t see that adaptability from a car. A bike helps you understand it.

slovenia

As our peloton began the BSG’s final stages, I started to see more of cycling’s tourism-elixir qualities. In the stony, hot, and cave-riddled terrain of the Karst region, we took cultural stops as breaks from the abrupt climbs. In the town of Kobjeglava, our group stood in the shade of a 300-year-old mulberry tree as the Ščuka family, among Slovenia’s most famous prosciutto makers, served samples and relayed generations-old production secrets. A few miles down the road, in the village of Pliskovica, we stopped to visit Jernej Bortolato, a traditional stonecutter who welcomed us to try the ancient artform before cycling on.

On the final day, the Adriatic’s salty air greeted us as we entered the Istrian Peninsula. Lunch was more local cheese, prosciutto, grilled vegetables, figs, honey, and of course more wine, on a hilltop restaurant overlooking the coastal towns of Koper and Izola.

We climbed onto our saddles for the last time and plunged through a rapid sequence of serpentine asphalt turns to the sea, small organic farms and fruit trees to either side. I was reminded of a conversation with Vesna Valentinčič, the owner of Hotel San Martin, where we stayed in Šmartno days earlier. “If you want something from nature, you have to work with it,” she said. Cycling is a way to share Slovenia with the world, but it does so in a way that stays true to the land. “We are all farmers here. But we change with the times, and this is our strength.”

FROM LJUBLJANA TO SOČA VALLEY

After reaching Ljubljana , take a deep breath and get ready for the adventure ahead.

From Slovenia’s main city, you’ll have a transfer organized to Soča Valley, where the cycling adventure will begin on the next day. Soča Valley has been recognized with a Slovenia Green  certification .

Cyclists will overnight in Kobarid , which is one of the region’s most important towns and the site of the Kobarid Museum . Besides being another magnet for cycling tours, hiking, fishing, and kayaking, Kobarid is also the location of the restaurant Hiša Franko and its chef Ana Roš, who is the only recipient of three Michelin Stars in Slovenia. Hungry cyclists will find that many of the restaurants in the area place a priority on responsible methods and use only local ingredients.

Houses by the Ljubljanica river

FROM KOBARID TO BRDA

You’ll start your second day with a bike ride to Tolmin. From there you’ll cycle along rivers Soča and Idrijca to the train station Most na Soči. A train will take you to Kanal and from there you’ll firstly be cycling on the local roads on the right riverbank of river Soča and a picturesque cycling trail along the Soča River to Plave and on to Solkan.

Leaving the emerald waters of the Soča River the bike tour discovers a different sort of richness: wine country. Heading south for just over 50 kilometers, and paralleling the Italian border, the bike tour rolls into the Goriška brda Region, which is actively developing its sustainable tourism offer all year round.

For a short time after reaching Solkan the cycling route leads you through the Italian side of Goriška brda, climbing through the Oslavje and Števerjan villages. You then reach Slovenia again very soon and cycle a bit more uphill towards the village of Hum.

In the place of alpine meadows, vineyards dominate the new landscape. In every direction, grapevines methodically line fields into the distance and drop behind the horizon.

For many travelers, these gentle, rolling hills recall visions of Tuscany. The region and its wineries are famous for their hospitality, but they are now becoming increasingly well-known across the globe for their high-quality vintages.

After cycling through the border villages the cycling route passes the view tower in Gonjače which stands tall in the Goriška brda and offers a fantastic, panoramic view. On the east, you’ll see the Vipava Valley, the next stage of your cycling adventure.

Reaching the Gonjače view tower means you’re almost finished with your first day of cycling. From there you reach Šmartno village in a very short time and you can finally enjoy a well-deserved break with a view over the vineyards. The final destination of the day, the village of Šmartno, home to some of the most prominent wine growers in the region, offers the chance to end the day with some excellent wine tasting and a hearty local meal.

In case you’d like to choose a harder route variant for the second day, we’ve also prepared this option. It goes from Kobarid steeply upwards to Livek, past Nebesa and Livške Ravne high up to the Kolovrat ridge where an open-air museum Kolovrat is located. This First World War Museum stands right on the spot of the third Italian defense line from the First World War. After taking a look around the outside museum, moderate cycling continues through Lig, Kambreško, and just under the peak of Korada to Gonjače. After reaching Gonjače the route’s ending is the same as with the easier option of the trail.

Cyclist by the emerald soča river

FROM BRDA TO THE VIPAVA VALLEY

Though it is difficult to pull yourself away from the Goriška brda Region, the next stage of your bike trip offers another full and rewarding day of excellent cycling and top-end gastronomy.

Lonely Planet wrote this about this beautiful area of Slovenia: “The [Vipava] Valley is green and beautiful, the food and wine are of superior quality. A perfect destination for a relaxed and at the same time active vacation.”

This stage of your cycling vacation, which is about 56 km long, passes the Italian side of Goriška brda for a short time at the beginning of the day. It goes to the center of Gorica (or Gorizia), which is on the Italian side of the border. In Gorica, you cross the border and shortly afterward join the cycling route on the outskirts of the Slovenian city Nova Gorica, which is a green destination with a golden Slovenia Green mark.

Nearby, Europe Square which connects the cities Nova Gorica and Gorica or Gorizia, symbolizing unity and connection between neighboring nations – a unique experience on your bike tour of Slovenia.

From there the route soon joins and follows the crystal clear and magical Vipava River, which is famous for its trout and unparalleled fishing. As your bike tour enters the Karst region, you’ll continue into another incredible wine region – home to the largest number of indigenous wine varieties in Slovenia.

Vipava is certified as a Slovenia Green certified  destination with its historic castle ruins, incredible wine, and food. On the way, cyclists will pass Ajdovščina, which is the second-largest town in the valley and a Slovenia Green Silver destination .

Cyclin by the vineyards

FROM VIPAVA VALLEY TO ŠTANJEL

Like with the Goriška brda region, leaving the Vipava Valley will be difficult. As is the case with every region in Slovenia, there is always the sensation that you could just stay where you are for a few more days to cycle, eat, explore, and just take in the majesty of the scenery. Once you’ve pulled yourself away and finished that cup of coffee while enjoying the lush green panorama, it’s time to start your cycling adventure in the unique Karst region .

Heading south and rolling west to the Karst landscape that acts as a connection between the Alps, vineyards, green valleys, and the Adriatic Sea. This region is famous for its incredible caves, open landscapes, horses, and mouthwatering — and locally sourced — food.

The fourth day of the bike tour is characterized by rolling terrain and moderately difficult riding because you’ll have to gain some altitude to reach the Karst plateau from the Vipava Valley. But since we’ve prepared different route versions for this day that vary in difficulty, we can adjust it to your physical condition. The easier variant includes less ascent while the hardest variant on the other hand includes ascending to the beautiful and high Karst ridges that offer fantastic panoramic views.

The day ends with a climb to Štanjel , where cyclists are rewarded with a wonderfully picturesque perched medieval village, where architecture, culture, and heritage merge. The views across the karst landscape are worth the ride alone. The real magic here happens while taking in an art gallery, seeing the castle, or visiting the  Ferrari Garden . As dusk falls, relaxing in the main square with a top-end meal and bottle of wine will make anyone glad they stopped.

slovenia cycle tours

FROM ŠTANJEL TO LIPICA

Cycling deeper into the Karst region gives cyclists another day and stage to get to know one of the most important, beautiful, and fragile areas of both Slovenia and Europe. The Karst region has a mind-blowing amount of natural diversity where forests, rocks, and water create their own climate. The result of this crossroads between culture, crafts, and climate creates, as one might expect, a fantastic growing zone for fruits, vegetables, and grapes for world-class wine.

Gourmet cyclists will be thrilled to discover that this is wine AND prosciutto country (called pršut here)! Between the village of Štanjel and the town of Komen, the Ščuka family estate , in the village of Kobjeglava, produces some of the best  pršut anywhere … and welcomes visitors for tastings. This makes it a perfect stop during your cycling vacation.

Just down the road, Komen is another Instagram-worthy perched village. This is also where the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route intersects with the  Walk of Peace hiking trail, which pays homage to the First World War front line that once ran across this stretch of land. History and respect meet in Komen, a beautiful place where excellent food, wine, and cycling intersect.

Traveling south and east from Komen, riders meander their way to the village of  Lipica where the cycling stage ends. This is the site of the famous stud farm, where the white, thoroughbred Lipizzan horses have been bred since the 16 th century.

slovenia cycle tours

FROM LIPICA TO LJUBLJANA

The Škocjan Caves, which have been on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage list since 1986, are only about ten kilometers away. This breathtaking system features underground caves, passages, collapsed valleys, natural bridges, and swallow holes carved by the Reka River. It’s a must-visit for anyone fascinated by natural wonders on their cycling trip in Slovenia.

After visiting this magnificent Karst phenomenon you’ll head towards Divača and take a train with your gear back to the capital city of  Ljubljana , which is both a Slovenia Green  Gold destination and arguably not just the greenest capital in Europe but also one of the welcoming places to enjoy great food outside in the town center among visitors and locals alike.

After replenishing your energy you can get to know Ljubljana in a different light by heading on one of the  guided tours , where learning about culture is intertwined with tasting food, beer, and wine. One such walk is the  Moustache Tour . Other culinary outings visit the growing number of  gourmet spots  scattered across the metropolis.

If you are in the city on a Friday, visit the Open Kitchen  or  Odprta Kuhna in Slovenian. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., dozens of chefs cook dishes from nearly every tradition and continent to an eager audience of gourmands, who have known for years what the world is starting to discover: the Slovenian capital is a gourmet capital.

As an additional cycling trip for day 6, you can optionally do the circular Plečnik cycling route which lasts for 2 hours and leads you to Plečnik’s heritage in Trnovo, the center of Ljubljana, Žale graveyard, and Tivoli Park.

Cycling Ljubljana Tivoli

FROM LJUBLJANA TO KRŠKO

Exploring the eastern half of Slovenia adds another dimension to the Bike Green Gourmet Route, making it a truly comprehensive cycling  experience.

After opening the day with a train ride east from Ljubljana, riders will deboard in Hrastnik and jump on their saddles. From here, cyclists will cross the Sava River and then follow a narrow canyon to Radeče and further on into the welcoming Posavje Valley.

Today’s stage, around 51 kilometers in length, is all about relaxed, easy cycling and great wine along quiet roads surrounded by vineyards on excursions like the Castle Wine Stories of Posavje. The only exception to easy cycling is the short, but steep final climb from Krško to Tri lučke.

What often intrigues travelers here is how little they know about this part of the country. The next thing many visitors notice is how much the region stays true to the values that have made it a land of rich bounty for so many centuries.

Though the scenery is stunning for the entire ride, staying overnight at Krško makes this stage worth it all by itself.

Cycling through green fields

FROM KRŠKO TO PODČETRTEK

The next day — a hearty 45-kilometer stage — is slightly more challenging, but no less beautiful as it rambles south and then east until it eventually straddles the Croatian border and then heads north.

At the beginning of this day’s route, you’ll cycle above Krško with perfect views back down to the Sava valley and afterward, after some longer climbs, reach Kozjansko. On top of a longer ascent and just above the small city called Podsreda the Podsreda castle is located. This is the most medieval castle among Slovenian castles and an information center for Kozjansko Regional Park is located in its basement. Kozjansko Regional Park is the largest Slovenian protected area and has earned a golden Slovenia Green Park mark.

The route then makes its way to Podčetrtek — a town and Slovenia Green Gold destination surrounded by nature, spas, gourmet experiences, and a chance to interact with forest and mountain wildlife in a unique way.

This area boasts numerous attractions, perfect for a cyclist’s getaway.

Cycling the Slovenia green gourmet route

FROM PODČETRTEK TO PTUJ

Wake up ready for a scenic 62-kilometer stage on rolling terrain. Soon after 10 km along the nice asphalt cycling path, you’ll reach the town of Rogaška Slatina . This  Slovenia Green destination is one of the country’s oldest spa sites. The mineral water, which produces the well-known Donat Mg water, has the world’s highest content of magnesium.

But, Rogaška Slatina isn’t only about spas and springs. There is also a wonderful wine road here. As well, the town has a long history, dating back to 1655, of glass production and with the artistry of its creation being some of the most impressive on the planet.

After Rogaška the route continues north to the ancient, yet thriving Ptuj , which is Slovenia’s oldest town. Visitors marvel at Ptuj’s magical lake, buzzing cobbled streets, castles, and festivals showcasing outstanding wine, food, and art.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Ptuj, which straddles the Drava River, is a magnet for visitors — especially active travelers. A tradition of wellness and spa possibilities along with a full calendar of events make this a premier stop for cyclists along the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route.

To spice up your day on the bike tour, add an optional short but steep climb through Haloze. The reward? Breathtaking views of Ptuj’s wine-growing hills, fields, and shimmering lake. Perfect for those seeking a bit more challenge on their cycling trip.

Cycling towards Ptuj castle

FROM PTUJ TO MARIBOR

This stage takes you on easygoing asphalt and gravel sections along the Drava River. Today’s trail, which is about 32 kilometers long, follows the Drava Cycling Route and makes all of the area’s incredible and lush strengths immediately available the way only bicycling can.

As riders roll to the end of the Bike Green Gourmet Route and the final destination of Maribor — a city with Slovenia Green Bronze certification — they will discover the world’s oldest vine , which has its house and museum. Make sure to relax with great food and wine as your Bike Slovenia Green: Gourmet Cycling tour pedaling odyssey comes to a close. The city is a hub for excellent and Michelin-recognized restaurants and bistros.

But Maribor is more than just a city with a beautiful river and wine. The city has museums, theaters, and art galleries to explore between escapes to hiking trails with panoramic photo-ops of the Drava River. Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy Slovenia’s second-biggest city and the main metropolis in the east.

Cyclist crossing bridge across Drava

MARIBOR LOOP

Before taking the train back to Ljubljana, we’ll spend half a day investigating the cycling routes around Maribor. There are urban paths, mountain bike trails, and connections to larger networks. In all, the city is the headquarters for hundreds of kilometers of cycling itineraries through the area, perfect for a short cycling trip or a longer cycling adventure.

An interesting cycling leads you from Maribor to the popular viewpoint on St. Urban. From there, a beautiful panorama of the second-largest city Maribor opens in front of your eyes. The cycling route then leads past the village Gaj nad Mariborom to Zgornja Kungota where an excellent, Michelin star-rated restaurant Hiša Denk is located. After having a delicious multi-course meal you can slowly start returning to Maribor. You can choose either to cycle along the gradual cycling trail and local roads or you can opt for an automobile transfer to the route’s starting point.

Before boarding a train back to the capital Ljubljana, wave goodbye to the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route — the world’s first all-green-certified gourmet cycling itinerary — and congratulate yourself for being a responsible traveler who knows that the destination’s most important ingredients are its food, culture, and the people who produce them.

As featured in:

evening-standard

Welcome to Slovenia

Meet your guides in the capital city of Ljubljana for a transfer into the otherworldly Slovenian Alps. It’s hard to imagine, but this lovely landscape of still pastures and alpine villages was once a refuge for Resistance fighters during World War II. Consider the region’s duality as we ride to a classic Slovenian restaurant where locals order the traditional potato ravioli known as žlikrofi— and a glass of wine, of course. Finish lunch and check in at our first refined hotel in the riverside village of Spodnja Idrija. Dinner is right on the property, and it’s a perfect first introduction to the handmade style of Slovenian cuisine.

Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Leskovika, Hotavlje, Spodnja Idrija Accomplished : 24 miles / 39 km, elevation gain: 1,764 feet / 537 meters Longer Option : 27 miles / 43 km, elevation gain: 2,493 feet / 760 meters Accommodations: Kendov Dvorec

Crossing Carniola

Today we ride across the ancient Duchy of Carniola—as the heartland of modern Slovenia was once known. Begin from the meadows of Idrija and pass through scenery that’s so idyllic it could be the setting for a Slovenian fairytale. We’ll descend to the banks of the Vipava River and meet our friend Matej for lunch; the climate takes a surprising turn towards the Mediterranean, and as a result, Vipava’s architecture is more terra cotta than timber. After lunch, check into our dreamy forest hotel perched above the clustered village of Vrhpolje, offering views of the valley below. This evening our local friend invites us for an intimate dinner at home.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Dole, Vipava, Štanjel Accomplished : 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 3,638 feet / 1,109 meters Longer Option : 25 miles / 41 km, elevation gain: 1,968 feet / 600 meters Accommodations: Theodosius

Flavors of the Vipava Valley

Set off for a food-focused exploration of the Karst, a limestone plateau that defines the border between Italy and Slovenia—and a region recognized for protected products like red wine and cured ham. We’ll ride into the Vipava Valley where locals turned their attention to winemaking after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The results are surprisingly good: taste some Pinot Noirs for yourself at lunch with a producer. Our culinary-centric day continues with dinner at a family-run restaurant that serves only what it produces onsite, including some of the best Karst prosciutto.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Šmarje, Branik, Komen Accomplished : 30 miles / 50 km, elevation gain: 2,558 feet / 780 meters Shorter Option : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 1,893 feet / 577 meters Accommodations : Theodosius

Echoes of the Great War

Begin the day riding through an area that saw some of the most intense fighting of World War I. Between 1915 and 1917, Italy and Austria-Hungary engaged in no less than 12 battles along the Isonzo River until the eventual collapse of the Italian Front (immortalized in Hemingway’s Farewell to Arms). To illustrate the impact, we’ll explore an intact section of tunnels and bunkers that changed hands several times in those two years. After lunch, it’s a far more blissful transition as we ride through the heart of these battlefields and across the tranquil border into Italy. Check in at our last hotel of the trip—a castle that stands above the vineyards of this picturesque valley. Tonight you may choose to dine on the hotel’s inviting terrace or ask your guides to recommend a more casual osteria or wine bar for dinner on your own.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Lipa, San Martino del Carso, Cormons Accomplished : 27 miles / 43 km, elevation gain: 2,122 feet / 647 meters Longer Option : 43 miles / 70 km, elevation gain: 2,959 feet / 902 meters Accommodations : Hotel Gredič

The Wine Frontier

From our castle hotel, the views of Italy and Slovenia are seriously moving—be sure to take a moment to appreciate it all over your morning coffee. The shared scenery of the two countries sets the tone for our ride today as we cross back and forth over their borders. Begin along the vine-clad ridges that lead to Cividale on the Italian side. This town can trace its roots back to Julius Caesar, and the main piazza is a perfect place to stop for a mid-ride espresso and a little people-watching. Then it’s back into Slovenia in time for lunch at a winery: the glassfuls you’ll sip come from grapes grown on both sides of the border. We’ll return to the hotel for some downtime this afternoon, then head up to the village to dine with our friend Simona. At her farmhouse restaurant, she welcomes us with a glass of wine which we’ll enjoy while watching the sunset. A home-cooked feast follows, and we’ll share meats, tender vegetables, seasonal fruit, and wine—all grown and produced right here.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Prepotto, Cividale, Medana Accomplished : 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 1,394 feet / 425 meters Longer Option : 38 miles / 61 km, elevation gain: 2,355 feet / 718 meters Accommodations : Hotel Gredič

Srečno, Slovenia!

Sleep in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast or take a final spin through the vineyards: there’s no wrong way to enjoy your final morning in Slovenia. Your guides will transfer you to the Trieste airport where you can catch a train to Venice or wherever your travels may take you next.

Meals : Breakfast Destinations : Monfalcone

FANO, Italy (AP) — Two-time world champion Julian Alaphilippe won the hilly 12th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Thursday with a solo breakaway, while Tadej Pogacar finished safely in the main pack to retain the pink jersey.

It was Alaphilippe’s first victory in the Giro, to go with his six stage wins at the Tour de France and one at the Spanish Vuelta — plus his back-to-back world titles in 2020 and 2021.

“I hadn’t planned on a 125-kilometer breakaway,” Alaphilippe said. “It’s a splendid victory after a rough period.”

Alaphilippe clocked slight more than 4 hours over the 193-kilometer (120-mile) route from Martinsicuro to Fano, which started flat along the coast but then cut inland for four fourth-category climbs.

Jhonatan Narvaez edged Quinten Hermans in a two-man sprint for second, 31 seconds behind Alaphilippe.

Pogacar and the peloton finished more than 5 minutes back.

Two-time Tour de France champion Pogacar remained 2 minutes, 40 seconds ahead of Daniel Martinez and 2:56 ahead of Geraint Thomas as he attempts to win both the Giro and the Tour this year.

“If there wasn’t the overall standings to worry about, I would have thought about trying to win this stage,” Pogacar said. “Alaphilippe showed that he’s back. Only champions are capable of actions like that.”

Pogačar Tadej of Team UAE Emirates celebrates after winning the 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Manerba del Garda to Livigno, Italy, Sunday, May 19, 2024. (Marco Alpozzi /LaPresse via AP)

Sprinter Fabio Jakobsen abandoned the race before the stage started after crashing on Wednesday.

Stage 13 on Friday follows an entirely flat route from Riccione to Cento.

Then there’s an individual time trial on Saturday, followed by three consecutive mountain legs.

The Giro ends in Rome in 10 days.
