Binged your way through Amazon 's Picard ? Looking for some more 4K trekking to tide you over until Picard Season 2 engages? Fans of classic Star Trek series Star Trek Voyager may be in luck then.

Star Trek fan Billy Reichard has kicked off a project to get the 90s era show remastered in 4K , using an AI machine learning engine.

Taking six hours per episode to process, Reichard has produced five episodes so far, working from a DVD source. Take a look at the early results in the YouTube upload below:

Troubleshooting

As you can see, the results are pretty special. As a show that kicked off in 1995, Star Trek Voyager's 4:3 ratio can't be extended for modern widescreen displays – but the machine learning engine does a great job of sharpening the existing picture and interpreting further details than were present in the original.

The main issue is audio syncing, as Voyager wasn't filmed at a fixed frame rate – which Reichard's method can't automatically fix, and thus needs manual tweaking.

Will Star Trek Voyager license holders CBS allow this project to continue? It's unlikely, but it would be a shame to see it shut down, as an official remaster would be difficult to achieve. With its effects shot on video rather than added afterwards, touching up the original source would be a painstaking job. For now, Reichard's glimpse at what might be is the best we're likely to get.

'Star Trek: Voyager' gets an unofficial 4K remaster thanks to AI

As with Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager is unlikely to ever get an official high-resolution remaster. The effects were shot on video rather than added to film after the fact, making it much harder to upgrade the quality than it was for The Next Generation . However, an unofficial project might get relatively close. Series fan Billy Reichard has started processing Voyager with a machine learning program that upgrades that '90s era image quality as much as possible. You won't forget that the show was made for tube TVs given the aspect ratio, but the AI is surprisingly effective -- it produces something you probably wouldn't mind watching on an idle afternoon if you're a Star Trek devotee.

The effort is time-consuming at about six hours for an episode, and the necessary software is both expensive and tricky to work with. Voyager had variable frame rates that make audio sync a pain, as you can see in the sample clip below. It could be a long, long time before you can see Janeway and crew in 4K glory. Still, Reichard hopes to give every episode the AI treatment. Just don't count on CBS sanctioning this, let alone making it officially available.

For the first time, you can now buy or rent every single Star Trek movie in the latest 4K and HDR standards. That includes all six movies based on the original series cast, all four featuring The Next Generation 's cast, and the more recent J.J. Abrams films.

On April 4, Paramount released an UltraHD Blu-ray set that included Star Trek: Generations , Star Trek: First Contact , Star Trek: Insurrection , and Star Trek: Nemesis along with several special features. The set marks the first time these films have been available in a 4K and HDR home video release. Alongside the Blu-rays, the films also became available on on-demand storefronts like Apple's TV app.

So as of this week, all 13 theatrically released Star Trek films are finally available in 4K and HDR. The latest releases also support the Dolby Atmos audio standard in addition to Dolby Vision HDR.

That said, large swaths of the classic Trek TV series aren't even available in HD, much less in 4K or HDR. All three seasons of  The Original Series and all seven of  The Next Generation got Blu-ray and digital HD releases in recent years, as well as Enterprise and The Animated Series , and all the new Paramount+ shows are in HD. But Deep Space Nine and Voyager  are still only available in standard definition.

A documentary about  Deep Space Nine released a couple of years ago featured small segments upscaled to HD to show what might be possible and there have been fan projects to do the same with AI, too. However, there hasn't been much movement on an official full series upscaling project.

The Ends DO Justify The Means …

Hey guys, sorry I haven’t been as fast as I thought, had technical issues. But the next eps are almost done (currently including Voyager s01e03, DS9 s01e03 and B5 movie The Gathering).

Also, two more projects will be added to the three I already have up (I know, I am insane), but perhaps some of them would be of interest to you guys, so I thought I would announce them ahead of time so you can tell me if you want to be invited.

• This is one of those “forgotten” SciFi treasures of the 90’s by Roddenberrys widow, effects were certainly ahead of their time

I was hoping everything was okay for you.

I’m definitely interested in both of your new projects - EFC is uneven but wildly underappreciated and SG1 is just classic. That said, I’m most interested in getting a decent number of episodes released for whatever projects you choose to focus on. I’d rather have a full season of 1 or 2 shows than 4 episodes each of 6 different shows. If splitting your efforts more broadly prevents burnout though, maybe that is the best way to go.

@vranir: Thanks. Yep, variety helps me a lot actually. Watching the episodes for corrections can get a bit tiresome at times, but I guess that will stop once I get around to let’s say episode 5+, since those are the ones I haven’t truly seen that much (ok, I once got to DS9 season 2 with one of my older workflows - I think the episode Harvester Desaster or something was the last one I did there, but that doesn’t really count because that’s a while back).

Also: I have taken up these two more projects not just for me or us around here but a close friend of mine that has had a lot of problems due to Covid, so if I can help him with this and also get something out of it for myself and the community here, why not?

wow! what a great thread! I’ve been hoping someone might be able to do this! Only yesterday I noticed in the Star Trek Voyager facebook group that one of the original CG animators was on the page and he was re-exporting some of the scenes he’d done in HD AND widescreen. It was really cool!

I know with Babylon 5 people were trying to do that with the new HD scans of the show and then use new exports of the effects to rebuild it… maybe that would be something to do with Voyager too!

I would love to at least see the show have some future in the Higher Quality age of television and streaming and not get…sidelined because of its production process.

For SG1, which premiere version are you planning to use? I personally prefer the final rerelease where they made some cuts (no nudity or awkward Carter line about genitalia) and replaced the giant glider with a shuttle.

@vranir: I will use the BluRay masters as a source, which has the full uncut pilot (yes, the one with the nudity and the genitalia line) - not because I prefer it, but rather because even using the DVD, it’s the only one I got 😉

Anyhow, I still got an episode of both DS9 and VOY (1x03), B5 Gathering, SG-1 (1x01;02), EFC (1x01) and perhaps ENT (1x01;02) on my shelf. Most of it is done, but I haven’t had time to watch it yet and make corrections. I had very busy work weeks (including weekends) and I am just so low on energy. Today I actually fell asleep during an online conference, which was really embarassing.

Hello again. A bit off topic here, but still: Since I realized my previous 2 tests on Enterprise were not exactly what I imagined, I refined the workflow to closer resemble the original and look less “artificial” and avoid oversharpening. Here are the comparison images:

My only tiniest nitpick (with the imgsli compare) might be that the saturation is a little too high and brightness reduced a tad too much? Archer’s blue top looks like it’s losing a smidge of detail in your upscale. It’s hard though because everything other than archer looks great in regards to saturation (and even he doesn’t look bad or anything really).

For the video, I’m not able to watch 4k in any kind of native-ness so I’ll just say it looks good from what I can tell (putting aside the bit mentioned above) but, yeah, I’m just watching it 2k which kinda defeats the point so 😦

Good stuff, Black Alert! Pretty soon you’ll be qualified to march into Paramount’s main office and demand they allow you to produce a new Trek series from scratch! 😃

@WMX: You are correct on the uniform, slight detail loss there, but that originates from a minor gaussian blur I used (which I also use for my DVD Upscales), the rreason for that being less problems with remaining artefacts and fast movements (which can sometimes be interpreted as hard lines by the upscaler, which makes things awkward to watch otherwise). It’s a compromise I can live with.

As for Paramount/CBS: Would love for them to agree to a co-op, but don’t see that happening 😉

Star Trek: Voyager receives a 4K remaster courtesy of an AI-based software

Originally released in 1995, Star Trek: Voyager , has now received a third-party 4K remaster. A Redditer (u/theboomsterz) who goes by the name of Billy Richard on YouTube has used a video AI program from Topaz Labs to remaster five episodes of the show thus far. Here's a short clip of the resultant video taken from the Season 6, Episode 4, Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy.

The video was remastered to 4K from a DVD source using Gigapixel AI from Topaz Labs, and the episode above had three complete runs with the software. It is a time-consuming and expensive process, with Richard claiming that it took him around six hours to process the work from start to finish.

As stated before, five episodes have been remastered as of now, but only short clips have been uploaded for viewership on YouTube. But Richard intends on saving up for upgrading from his current trial version of Gigapixel and subsequently making more episodes in the future. While the link to download or view full episodes has not been given, nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how CBS and Paramount respond to this.

Trekkies rejoice star trek: voyager is being unofficially remastered in 4k.

We have a bit of a soft spot for Star Trek: Voyager and if you do too then you'll love the idea that it's being remastered (unofficially) in 4K.

It's hard to believe that it's been 25 years since Voyager first aired. With Captain Janeway and her crew trekking through the Delta Quadrant on their way home over seven series spanning six years until 2001. 

Things looked a bit different back then as the show was filmed for old-fashioned televisions which didn't even have a modern aspect ratio. 

Star Trek: Voyager might have been pioneering, being the first Star Trek series to use CGI footage for the exterior space shots rather than models, but it was still filmed in a 480p 4:3 format. 

However, Billy Reichard , a fan of the series, has set about bringing new life to the show by using artificial intelligence to upgrade the original footage to 4K. 

The results are impressive too. Using a mid-range PC, Billy Reichard has employed Topaz Labs  machine learning software to upgrade and improve the original footage. 

He explains that it takes around 13 hours to process an entire episode and even then it's not perfect. Voyager was recorded with a variable frame rate which means the audio is sometimes out of sync and the AI doesn't take this into account. Some human editing is required to manually re-sync the audio with the scenes. 

We applaud his efforts and hope to see more in future. 

It's also great to see the different ways Topaz Labs AI technology is being used. We only just recently saw it employed to upscaled an 1886 film to 4K and that was thoroughly impressive too.
