Don Henley and Stevie Nicks: Eagles, Fleetwood Mac Merge on Magical Two Voices Tour

Bottom line: Dream bills don’t get much better than this magical pairing, which deserves a longer run

HOLMDEL, N.J. (Hollywood Reporter) – Big-ticket heritage acts have been propping up the listing concert business for years now, and if this is the way it must be, the industry would do well to take a close look at a novel (but too-brief) new tour from Stevie Nicks and Don Henley — one of the most magical rock shows in a long while.

More than just the standard double bill, these songwriting legends (and fronts for two of the greatest bands of all time, Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles) work hand in hand, interpreting each other’s stuff in a way rarely done by truly big stars.

On the second night of this 10-date swing, Henley, up first, got things rolling with some dry wit and a well-received “Witchy Woman.” Quickly he was into the big stuff — “Hotel California” — during which Nicks sauntered in from the wings to join him, setting off the kind of frenzied, organic ovation that touring’s modern-day corporate labs simply cannot manufacture.

Superstar pairings are best, of course, when there is mutual admiration between the artists and a career path that is somehow parallel yet also different — as with Billy Joel and Elton John. Tortured friendships are also great for the boxoffice (Eric Clapton and George Harrison) — and if the two were also lovers back in the day, well, that’s a grand slam.

Henley and Nicks — both pioneering California rockers — were indeed an item in the late 1970s (after her split from FM bandmate Lindsey Buckingham) and have remained friendly. While they don’t quite set off the unrequited sparks that the Nicks/Buckingham-led Mac still produces to this day, there is a familiarity about them that lends both comfort and renewal to hits such as “The Last Worthless Evening” (his) and “Gold Dust Woman” (hers).

On this particular night, there was also a defiant “Stop Dragging My Heart Around,” a wistful “New York Minute” and their lone hit together, 1981’s “Leather and Lace.”

Each also worked hard separately. From his seemingly inexhaustible supply of frothy radio singles and sturdy album tracks, Henley pulled out “Dirty Laundry,” “Life in the Fast Lane” and the brilliant “Heart of the Matter.” Nicks, who only gets better with age, countered with an ethereal “Rhiannon,” and dramatic versions of “Stand Back,” “Edge of Seventeen” and others from her long career, all set off by her signature ribbons and shawls.

Though this terrific evening ran almost three hours, there was still a lot missing, including the rumored set-closer “Desperado” — something they’re bound to get to if this limited run becomes the full-fledged tour promoters are said to be banking on for next year.

Stevie Nicks, 2014.

Stevie Nicks was sitting in her den in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades recently, overlooking the ocean, when the 66-year-old peered out the window and saw black angel wings. The wings were so pretty, she thought about taking a photo. But after several minutes, she heard ambulance sirens and realized that a boat had caught fire: The angel wings were in fact black smoke.

Reunited Fleetwood Mac’s Music Sales Surge

It’s telling that she saw beauty in a disaster. Rumours , the 1977 Fleetwood Mac album, is both one of the most elegant pop albums ever made, and one of the most savage. The record chronicles the romantic crossfire between Nicks and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham , a pair of Americans who’d joined the venerable British group two years earlier, and bassist John McVie and keyboardist Christine McVie , who’d broken up and weren’t speaking to one another, following her affair with the band’s sound engineer. (Drummer Mick Fleetwood didn’t escape the melodrama — his wife had an affair with Mick’s best friend.) Though the Nicks-Buckingham romance ended long ago, it continues to yield great songs: On her new album, 24 Karat Gold – Songs From the Vault , due Oct. 7, Nicks has recorded lost songs she wrote between the late ’60s and mid-’90s, at least one of which, she tells Billboard, is about Buckingham.

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours: Live' Debuts in Top 10 on Album Sales Chart

On the day of her album’s release, Nicks, who was once married briefly, will play New York’s Madison Square Garden with Fleetwood Mac , the fifth date of the band’s On With the Show North American concerts, which continue through December — the first leg of a planned world trek. A year ago, the group canceled dates in Australia and New Zealand due to John McVie’s cancer treatment (the band’s publicist reports that he’s “in excellent health now”), and this new tour reunites them with Christine McVie, who quit the group in 1998. That’s a lot of ex-lovers on the same stage, and a lot of beautiful black smoke.

Trending on Billboard

24 Karat Gold is an unusual idea: You recorded songs you’d written years ago but never released. Were you able to figure out in what year you wrote each song? I don’t know the exact dates. I’m pretty sure “Cathouse Blues” was written in 1969, before Lindsey and I moved to L.A. And I think “Lady” was written at the end of 1971 or beginning of 1972, when Lindsey and I got our first piano. I think it was the first song I ever wrote on a piano.

Why old songs instead of new ones? This album was made very fast. When [John McVie] got cancer, we had to cancel our tour of Australia. I had some free time, and I thought, “Maybe I should make a record.” All over the Internet, there are songs I wrote but never released, and people keep saying, “Why don’t you record these songs for real?” I’d never had time to do that. Now I had an empty, precious three months.

My previous album, In Your Dreams , took a year and two months. So I called [ In Your Dreams producer] Dave Stewart and said, “How do we make a record in two months?” And he said, “We go to Nashville.” He told me, “In Nashville, you hire the best studio musicians, and they record two songs a day. On a really good day, they might even do three.” I was laughing, because I didn’t believe him. But we were there for three weeks, and we recorded 17 songs in 15 days.

Stevie Nicks Preps New ’24 Karat Gold’ Album

Fleetwood Mac couldn’t record 17 songs in 15 months. They couldn’t, not even if you offered them $5 million apiece. In Fleetwood Mac, I play them a demo, and someone says, “That’s great, but why don’t we work on that second verse?” I might say, “Are you crazy?” or I might say, “That’s a good idea.” You mull it over.

We packed up after those 15 days in Nashville and went back to my house, where we recorded background vocals and guitar overdubs. This was all done in under three months, because on Aug. 4, I had to start Fleetwood Mac rehearsals. We didn’t have a minute to spare.

Is there relief in doing a solo album, rather than going through the democratic process of Fleetwood Mac? In a band, you have to ask others “What do you think?” and then pretend you care.

Right. Because you don’t really care. You’re asking people to give you an opinion, just so you’ll be able to say, “I totally disagree with you, and I know I’m right. But I’m glad to hear how you feel.”

You spent months listening to your old songs, and for 24 Karat Gold ‘s art, looking at photos of yourself as far back as your 20s. What did you learn about your life? Part of me is feeling extremely old now, and part of me is feeling extremely young. Because I look at these pictures and realize I worried about things that I shouldn’t have been worrying about. Like the fact that I had little marionette lines around my mouth when I was 29, and I was complaining about them. I wouldn’t go out to the beach without a sarong from my neck to my ankles. Now I see a picture of myself from that era in a bikini and I’m like, “You looked great. And you missed out on a lot of fun vacations, because you were so sure that you were fat.”

Fleetwood Mac With Christine McVie Announce North American Tour

So the moral is, spend more time in a bikini? Spend more time in a bikini! All the little girls in their 20s, they’re terrified of looking like they’re not 16. And I’m like, “Oh, just get ready for what’s to come.” It’s going to be way harder for them. The world has become a much more vain place.

“Cathouse Blues” is the oldest song on 24 Karat Gold , and it’s a very unusual style for you, almost ragtime.

It is unusual. I think I wrote it in 1969, maybe ’68. It’s about some cartoon cats. They’re hanging out on a fence and — I don’t want to say hooker cats, because they weren’t that, but they were definitely street cats. When it says “blue-gray eyes,” I think that must have been about Lindsey, because he has blue-gray eyes.

At 15 and a half, I fell in love with a really handsome boy in Arcadia High School in Los Angeles. Thank God for that, because even though my relationship with Lindsey didn’t really end well, the passionate feeling I had for this man — who I still know very well, and, in my own way, will always be crazy about– he brought out this love song.

When you went back to listen to songs you’d written years ago, did they each remind you of a specific period of your life?

Yes. Give “Mabel Normand” a special listen. Mabel was an amazing actress and comedian from the ’20s, and she was a terrible cocaine addict. She eventually died of tuberculosis, but it was really her drug addiction that killed her. She was in love with a famous director, who tried to get her off coke, and he was murdered. Rumor has it, drug dealers killed him. I saw a documentary of her in 1985, when I was at my lowest point with the blow. I was watching TV one night, the movie came on, and I really felt a connection with her. That’s when I wrote the song. Less than a year later, I went to rehab at Betty Ford.

Stevie Nicks Teams up With Lady Antebellum to Rock ACM Awards

Didn’t a doctor warn you in the ’80s that if you did one more line of coke, you might have a heart attack?

He said I’d have a brain hemorrhage, actually. The documentary really scared me, because I saw this beautiful girl go downhill so fast. Sometimes you can’t see it in yourself, but you sure as heck can see it in someone else. And suicide was never my MO. I’m basically a happy person. I was a happy person back then. I just got addicted to coke, and that was a very bad drug for me. It was obviously a very bad drug for Mabel too. She had a gang of rich kids, like Lindsay Lohan today. That same bunch of girls comes around every 15 years.

What about “Hard Advice”? What’s happening in that song?

It’s a lecture Tom Petty gave me one day about something that was going on in my life. I’d asked him to write a song with me — this was about two months after I came out of rehab for [addiction to] Klonopin. I was still in a fragile state, after 48 days of hell in rehab. And Tom said, “You don’t need help to write a song. You just need to get over this experience that bummed you out so bad. The relationship you were in is over, it was over a long time ago, and you need to move on.” And I went home and wrote this song.

You’ve toured with Tom, you’ve recorded a few duets, and his band members contributed to your first two solo albums. Wasn’t he also tangentially involved in “Edge of Seventeen” [from 1981’s Bella Donna ]? I asked Tom’s wife, Jane, when she met him. She said, “I met him at some point during the age of 17.” But I thought she said, “The edge of 17.” I said, “Jane, can I use that? Can I write a song called ‘Edge of Seventeen’?”

Tom Petty on the ‘Good Thing About Getting Old’: ‘You Know What’s Worth Spending Time on and What’s Not’

I always thought “Edge of Seventeen” was about lusting after a younger guy. But recently, I read that it’s about John Lennon ‘s murder. It is. And “Edge of Seventeen” is also a little bit about Tom. “He seemed broken hearted/Somethin’ within him,” that was Jane talking about Tom. I bet a lot of people thought I was talking about me, but I was chronicling their relationship as she told it to me.

I notice you haven’t said which of your ex-boyfriends “Hard Advice” is about. That reminds me of a story Don Henley told years ago, about your [Fleetwood Mac] song “Sara.” He said you got pregnant while the two of you were dating, and Sara was the name you gave the unborn baby. Had I married Don and had that baby, and had she been a girl, I would have named her Sara. But there was another woman in my life named Sara, who shortly after that became Mick’s wife, Sara Fleetwood.

Don Henley Slams ‘Arrogant’ Frank Ocean for Using ‘Hotel’ Music

So what Henley says about the song is accurate, but it’s not the entirety of the song?

Right. It’s accurate, but not the entirety of it.

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is, famously, an album made while both couples in the band were breaking up. But you and Lindsey were already having problems when you joined the band in 1974. So I wonder if the previous album, Fleetwood Mac , is also a breakup album.

We were breaking up when Fleetwood Mac asked us to join. We moved down from San Francisco to L.A. in 1972, and made Buckingham Nicks in 1973, and were having problems all through that. When we moved, it was lonely. I didn’t have any girlfriends. And I was the one who worked. I had to be a waitress, and a cleaning lady, in order to support us — because Lindsey didn’t want to play four sets at Chuck’s Steakhouse, where we could’ve made $500 a week. To him, that was selling out. He wanted to play original music, so I went along with that.

When we joined Fleetwood Mac, I said, “OK, this is what we’ve been working for since 1968. And so Lindsey, you and I have to sew this relationship back up. We have too much to lose here. We need to put our problems behind us. Maybe we’re not going to have any more problems, because we’re finally going to have some money. And I won’t have to be a waitress.”

I made Lindsey listen to all the Fleetwood Mac records. And I said, “I think we can do something for this band. We’ll do it for a year, save some money and if we don’t like it, we’ll quit.” And he’s like, “But Buckingham Nicks , I still think the record’s going to start to break out.” I said, “You wait around. I’m sick of being a waitress. We are joining Fleetwood Mac and we’re going to be great.”

I got an apartment on Hollywood Boulevard, he moved back in with me, and we kind of put our relationship back together. We weren’t fighting about money, we had a really nice place, and we were going to work with these hysterically funny English people every day, making great music.

Christine was like my mentor, and the only person who could buffer Lindsey. She could totally soothe him and calm him down, and that was great, because I wasn’t good at that. We were sailing along on the highest wave. It was OK for a while, until it wasn’t. At the end of 1976, that’s when it just blew up.

Lindsey Buckingham on Solo Work

So do you hear premonitions of that breakup in the Fleetwood Mac songs?

Absolutely. Some of those songs came from two years before, when we broke up. People didn’t examine that record as much, because to the public, it looked great — two couples in a band. And by the way, Christine and John weren’t doing so great either during that album.

I feel bad for John. If Lindsey wrote a mean song about you, you could write one about him. Christine could write one about John. But John didn’t get to write a mean song about anyone.

No. John just got to snarl and play bass. That’s why it’s good to be a writer, because you get to lash back. And had John been a writer, he would have a lot to say.

Why haven’t you written a memoir?

Because I wouldn’t be able to tell the whole truth. The world is not ready for my memoir, I guarantee you. All of the men I hung out with are on their third wives by now, and the wives are all under 30. If I were to write what really happened between 1972 and now, a lot of people would be very angry with me. It’ll happen some day, just not for a very long time. I won’t write a book until everybody is so old that they no longer care. Like, “I’m 90, I don’t care what you write about me.” I am loyal to a fault. And I have a certain loyalty to these people that I love because I do love them, and I will always love them. I cannot throw any of them under the bus until I absolutely know that they will not care.

The world is ready, but the third wives are not ready.

The third wives are not ready. The husbands are not ready either.

You said getting revenge is one reason it’s good to be a writer.

Yes, but you also have to be kind. Just because a relationship ended badly, and shitty things happened, you cannot tell that to the world. But you can write a song about it, in three verses and a bridge and a chorus, that tells the really magical moments.

Stevie Nicks Joined by Don Henley, Harry Styles for Rock Hall Performance

Stevie Nicks kicked off the 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony with a four-song performance that featured guest spots from Don Henley and pop star Harry Styles .

After opening the show with "Stand Back" from 1983's The Wild Heart , Nicks provided the first big surprise of the night by welcoming the Eagles star on stage to perform "Leather and Lace." The duo's original version of the song, from 1981's Bella Donna , earned Nicks her second solo Top 10 hit.

Next up was " Stop Draggin' My Heart Around " with One Direction and solo star Harry Styles standing in for the song's co-writer and original co-singer, Tom Petty . She concluded her set with an energetic take on a third song from Bella Donna , " Edge of Seventeen ."

Throughout her performance, photos from the early days of Nicks' career were displayed on screens behind the stage. She also wore the original cape from the cover of The Wild Heart , proudly noting that "not one thread is out of place after all this time."

Nicks is the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. She was previously honored as a member of Fleetwood Mac in 1998.

Despite a generation gap in age, the friendship between Nicks and Styles has been well documented for several years. The former One Direction member has long admired Nicks’ work and has covered her material on several high-profile occasions, including a performance of Fleetwood Mac 's "The Chain" at the 2018 MusiCares concert honoring the group for its charity work.

In 2017, Styles experienced one of “the best nights of [his] life” when Nicks joined him onstage during a performance at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. “I never thought I’d be able to say this," Styles beamed while welcoming his idol that night. "Please welcome to the stage, Stevie Nicks.” The duo sang together on a Styles solo song ("Two Ghosts") before diving into Fleetwood Mac's “Landslide” and Nicks’ 1982 solo hit “Leather and Lace.”

The admiration between the two musicians goes both ways. In an interview with Rolling Stone , Nicks referred to Styles as " Mick [Fleetwood] ’s and my love child," later explaining that "When Harry came into our lives, I said, 'Oh my God, this is the son I never had.' So I adopted him. I love Harry."

The 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will air April 27 on HBO .

Stevie performs at Don Henley’s 70th birthday gig

Stevie Nicks  joined Don Henley onstage for his 70th birthday bash concert at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas on Saturday night. Stevie’s appearance was announced several months ago, but it was marketed as a surprise to ticket holders.

Stevie and Don performed their smash hit duet “Leather and Lace” from Stevie’s 1981 solo album debut  Bella Donna . Stevie then played the tambourine for the following song, Don’s hit single “Boys of Summer” from his 1984 album Building the Perfect Beast .

Stevie returned to the stage at the end of the show, playing the tambourine for “All She Wants to Do Is Dance,” (another hit single from  Building the Perfect Beast )  and remained onstage for the set closer, The Beatles’ cover “Birthday.”

Other guests appearing at the show were Patty Smyth and Eagles members Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh.

36 Years After “Leather And Lace,” Don Henley And Stevie Nicks Are Back With Stirring New Duet

36 Years After “Leather And Lace,” Don Henley And Stevie Nicks Are Back With Stirring New Duet | I Love Classic Rock Videos

“I’m Still In Love, Why Aren’t You?”

Since their split in the 70s, Fleetwood Mac beauty Stevie Nicks and former Eagle Don Henley have patched things up and shared the stage and the studio together, most notably for 1981’s smash hit “Leather And Lace” – and now three decades later, the ex-lovers are back with a brand new duet to emotionally compromise you completely! Featured on Henley’s country tinged 2015 solo album Cass County , “It Don’t Matter To The Sun” is a take on the original written in 1999 by Garth Brooks’ alter-ego Chris Gaines and touches on a myriad of feelings that no doubt flow between ex-lovers, even years after the fact.

Fun Fact: “It Don’t Matter To The Sun” is only available as a bonus track on the Target special edition of Henley’s Cass County.

If you thought you loved the intense push and pull of “Leather And Lace,” you’re in for a treat with the soft resignation of “It Don’t Matter To The Sun”. The duet features both Don and Stevie each taking half of the song, representing two lives rendered incomplete without the other half; in fact, the song does sound incomplete with only Don’s verse until Stevie joins in right around 2:24. “It Don’t Matter To The Sun” may just be a cover of the Chris Gaines classic, but the passion brought to it by Don Henley and his very, very special guest is what turns this song from a cover into a love letter to times long, long ago.

The Truth About Don Henley And Stevie Nicks' Relationship

nicks henley

Stevie Nicks' tumultuous relationship with Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham amassed a multitude of hits for the band's 1977 cult classic Rumours , which hosts stories of the duo's rocky past in both camps. These stories didn't end, either. Even on Nicks' 2014 project 24 Karat Gold – Songs From the Vault , when the singer debuted lost songs written between the late sixties and mid-nineties, at least one of them was about Buckingham, per Billboard.

However, it was Nicks' short-lived fling with Don Henley in the mid-seventies that sparked inspiration for a later song off of the band's 1979 album Tusk. The somber ballad "Sara" was written in the aftermath of Nicks' relationship with Mick Fleetwood — who went on to marry Sara Rector in 1988 — as well as the singer's unexpected pregnancy with collaborator and Eagles member Don Henley.

According to Nicks, Sara is the name that she would've given their child.

Stevie Nicks didn't want to settle down

In the late 1970s, Don Henley and Stevie Nicks got together after Nicks briefly dated drummer Mick Fleetwood. Henley may have even considered marrying Nicks, according to Smooth Radio . Nicks ended up becoming pregnant by Henley in 1979, per Billboard , and she had an abortion. Nicks has stated multiple times in the past that she deliberately chose not to settle down and have children of her own due to her demanding career. "My mission maybe wasn't to be a mom and a wife; maybe my particular mission was to write songs to make moms and wives feel better," she told ABC Downtown in 2001.

But yes, if the baby had been a girl, she would've been named Sara. "Had I married Don and had that baby, and had she been a girl, I would have named her Sara," Nicks told Billboard magazine, per Mercury News .

In 1982, years after the breakup, a duet between Henley and Nicks peaked at No. 6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks straight. Initially penned for Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter's duet album Leather and Lace , Nicks' version has remained a classic in the pop rock canon and has since been performed live by the two on multiple occasions. In fact, Henley and Nicks seem to remain amicable to this day: the pair went on tour together in 2005, completing ten performances under the bill The Two Voices Tour .

The Eagles’ legendary co-founder Don Henley is set to turn 70 on 22 July 2017. According to reports in American publication D Magazine , this special occasion is to be marked by a star-studded concert, with the bill hotly-tipped to include Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Scandal frontwoman Patty Smyth in addition to Henley’s long-time Eagles band mates Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmidt.

No official announcement has yet been made, but the concert – which is scheduled for the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas – is likely to feature performances of songs from throughout Henley’s long music career, including many of the classic hits he recorded with The Eagles and addition to many of his best-known solo songs. The concert is part of a wider, three-day birthday celebration for Henley that also will include a storytelling event and a Q&A session scheduled for Sunday, 23 July. Proceeds raised by the various events will benefit the Caddo Lake Institute, a non-profit organization Henley founded in 1993 to help preserve the wetlands area near his hometown of Linden, Texas.

Don Henley and his late band mate Glenn Frey were the main songwriters and co-lead singers of the Eagles, one of the most successful rock bands of all time. After the group broke up in 1980, Henley enjoyed continued multi-platinum success as a solo artist. The Eagles reunited in 1994 and have remained a popular touring act ever since. Henley was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the group in 1998.

Following his birthday celebration, Henley will play The Classic East festival with a re-formed Eagles line-up on 29 July, 2017 in New York City. The show, a companion event to The Classic West concert that was held on 15 July in Los Angles, also will feature Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers.

I love the Eagles. I have watched the history of the eagles part one and two many times and never tire of it. You guys were part of the 70’s which I was a part of. Please continue as a group. I believe Glenn would be very happy to see his son seeing audiences in awe of his work as he once did. I truly enjoy listening to your songs. I believe they were from your hearts and that’s why they’ve stood the test of time. Keep rocking for those of us who enjoy seeing a piece of yesterday still going strong today. A True Fan

Stevie Nicks filled a sold-out Bridgestone Arena with songs and stories from her 50-year career

stevie nicks don henley tour

Rock royalty Stevie Nicks turned a sold-out Bridgestone Arena into The Bluebird Café Tuesday night as she filled the two-hour set with her massive catalog of hit songs — and shared the stories behind them.

Clad in a black skirt and black velvet jacket, topped with her signature long, blonde curls, Nicks, who told the crowd she turns 76 this month, still sounded vocally at the top of her game. She kept the show simple with minimal video effects and no flashy stage shows. After all, with a voice like that and the breadth of songs in her repertoire, there's no need for pomp and circumstance.

Nicks kicked off the night with a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" before telling the packed arena how excited she was to be back in Nashville because it holds a special place in her story.

"I'm very glad to be here because I always tell you this, but my granddad was a kind of a bittersweet, bitter country singer and writer that traveled across the United States on trains. He rode the rails, did the whole thing, left his family. And I never really met him. However, he brought me a whole truckload full of 45s which were pretty much solid country with a little bit of Everly Brothers and a little bit of Buddy Holly. I was in the fourth grade and that sent me off to this whole thing. Whenever I'm here, I always think of my sweet little grandfather."

Nicks rolled through songs from her solo records dating back to her 1981 solo debut "Bella Donna" which spawned hits such as "Edge of Seventeen," "Leather and Lace" and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," the latter of which came with the story of the night.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Nicks told the crowd how the Tom Petty duet ended up being her first single off the record, thanks to producer and then boyfriend Jimmy Iovine.

"After we had finished the record, Jimmy says to me, 'the problem is, we don't have a single,'" Nicks said. "Now you being a bunch of Nashville people will understand this better than maybe anybody across the country. That's the worst possible thing somebody could say to you."

Iovine, who was also recording Tom Petty at the time, said Petty offered to give the song to Nicks if she wanted it and he added, "I'll sing it with her if she wants."

"So I went in the next day. I think it really was the next day. I'd never heard this song, so we sat in the studio and listened to it a couple times. And we go out there to record it and it was so easy. It was like he and I had been singing together forever and the saddest thing was that we did it like three times and then it was done, and then I had to leave and didn't get to spend the rest of the evening hanging out with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers."

Other great storytelling moments from the show included a call for everyone to vote in the 2024 election, her passion and support for the war in Ukraine, her meeting the members of Fleetwood Mac for the first time, her shoutout to Lady A's Hillary Scott and her time volunteering for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where the singer spent 12-hour days over a span of several years sitting with patients, giving them music.

"The reason I'm telling you about it is my finest hour," she said from the stage. "A lot of people had no idea who I was because I was so much older than them. But I, I had a, a ploy. I took my entire music collection and put it on iPods. 937 songs. Some people would say 'who are you?' and I'd say 'it doesn't matter who I am but I have an iPod with 937 songs on it and it's going to help you with your rehabilitation. And you're going to love it and you're going to remember me because of this."

She sang "Soldier's Angels," a song she wrote during the early 2000s as a tribute to those she met during those years of hospital visits, but noted the song is also a fitting tribute to the war in Ukraine.

She shared the story of how "Leather and Lace," which she recorded as a duet with Don Henley, she originally wrote for Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. But the song is about couples staying together, so when she learned Jennings and Colter were divorcing, took the song back and recorded it herself. Nicks brought her vocal coach, Steve Real, who she credits for keeping her signature vocal tone in such good shape, to the stage to sing Henley's part in the duet.

But the sweetest moment of the night came during the very last song of the night when she and long-time guitar player Waddy Wachtel performed an acoustic version of "Landslide" while the video screens flashed through photos of Nicks' former bandmate and lifelong friend Christine McVie, who died in 2022.

After the two slayed a beautifully simple version of the song, Nicks told the crowd life without her friend has been empty and weird.

"As my mom used to say, 'Stevie, when you're hurt, you will always run to the stage.' And so I have been running since then to the stage almost every night, it seems. And you, just you, make me better every single night. And nobody else has been able to really help me. So I thank you so much for being that spirit for me. Thank you so much."
