Stranglers at Brighton Music Hall

My girlfriend has been a Stranglers fan for over 20 years. She didn't believe me when I told her they were coming to Boston. They did not disappoint. The set was crisp and energetic. Not bad for a bunch of "old timers". They certainly made a fan out of me.

Men in black return to NYC

Caught the show at highline ballroom. First time there and had a great night. Last time I saw the boys was1980 Irving plaza. We had meet and great with the band and picture. The wife swooned over jj.the best I've ever heard them sound was great and place was packed. Played everything I wanted to hear.

Stranglers-About time!

Awesome show, great to see them again. Sound could have been better, heavy bass caused distortion. Draft beer was terrible, Sam Summer was skunked.

They still rock

I was wary at first about Baz Warne replacing Hugh Cornwell as lead vocal but he was great. The rest of the band was on their game. JJ Burnel and Dave Greenfield were great. Couldn't see the drummer clearly. Jet Black is still with the band but he sometimes skips shows due to age and health. Can't be sure if he was there but whoever it was was fine. Show got to a slow start but by the 5th or 6th song of 22 they were cranking and the gray-haired mosh pit (lol) was moshing, albeit carefully. Not making fun of 50-something moshers. After all Stranglers fans have aged along with the band (that includes me). But there were some younger fans too.

Stranglers were great to see again

There were some sound issues and it caused some hostility, but they were just as great as I remembered. Played all my favorite songs and the bass was awesome! Would have given them five stars if the sound and volume were better.

Stranglers banged it out

Great show featuring a mix of their classics and newer stuff. Felt lucky to see them at such a small venue - the last time I saw them in the 80s was in the UK, with a couple of thousand others! Wish JJB had sung a few more songs, especially 5 Minutes!

About the stranglers.

First formed in 1974, The Stranglers no bull***t attitude was embraced by the punk movement of the late '70s, with their first three albums (Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes and Black and White) being released within an astonishing 13 months of each other, scoring hit singles such as Peaches, No More Heroes and Walk On By. Further success was to follow with Always The Sun, Strange Little Girl and the mercurial Golden Brown, amongst many others, earning the group 24 Top 40 singles and 18 Top 40 albums.??

The Stranglers 50th anniversary UK and Ireland tour tickets are on sale now

It’s never a frown with The Stranglers! Celebrate 50 years of the British punk band and bag yourself tickets to their Fifty Years In Black Anniversary Tour in 2024.

One day, many moons ago, one of our RadioTimes.com writers was helping their grandparents clear out their attic and they stumbled across one of their dad’s old satchels. On it were four The Stranglers badges, including a lovely one of a rat enjoying the sunset (Rattus Norvegicus). They took the badges, naturally, and pinned them to their own rucksack.

2024 marks 50 years of punk band The Stranglers, and they truly are a band which spans generations. To celebrate five decades creating music, The Stranglers have announced the Fifty Years In Black Anniversary Tour. The UK and Ireland tour will visit cities up and down the country, from Glasgow to London, and we have everything you need to know to snap up tickets.

The Stranglers were formed in 1974 when drummer Jet Black sold his ice cream van to start a band. The group supported the likes of Patti Smith and The Ramones, and released their debut album Rattus Norvegicus in 1977 which featured the hit single Peaches.

The album No More Heroes followed in late 1977, earning The Stranglers another hit single with the title track, and the album Black and White came the next year in 1978. 1982 saw their biggest hit single yet, Golden Brown, which came from the album La Folie. As punk music began to fade away, the band persevered, exploring synthesisers and other sounds.

As well as their punk music, The Stranglers were punk in nature, too. The new-wave band have been in altercations with both The Clash and The Sex Pistols, they were arrested in France for starting a riot, wanted by Swedish gangs, and in one infamous tale, they gaffer-taped a French journalist up the Eiffel Tower.

One of the most iconic and influential bands in British music history, The Stranglers celebrate their 50th anniversary as a band with an extensive UK & Irish tour in 2024.

First formed in 1974, The Stranglers uncompromising attitude was embraced by the punk movement of the late 70s but their musicianship and menace transcended the genre. They created their own unique sound and achieved over 25 Top 40 singles and 18 Top 40 albums.

The Stranglers plan to make these milestone anniversary shows extra special with two sets featuring songs from the band’s inception through to the present, showcasing their unique fifty year career. These truly special events will be unmissable for fans of the Meninblack.

Morrissey malingered magnificently as the headliner in 2022. Siouxsie was a keening Banshee in 2023 in a performance delayed a day by the threat of lightning at the Brookside at the Rose Bowl festival grounds.

This year, with bands such as Blondie , Interpol , Adam Ant , and Simple Minds also on the bill, the headliner experience was something altogether diffferent.

Duran Duran , the ever-stylish English new wave group, headlined Cruel World on Saturday. The band has enjoyed a deserved resurgence in popularity post-pandemic with its induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 and a popular tour that featured two sold-out nights at the Hollywood Bowl.

Duran Duran headlines the Cruel World music festival at Brookside...

The 90-minute set was as colorful as the cream and lavender jackets worn by singer Simon LeBon and keyboardist Nick Rhodes, as sharp as bassist John Taylor’s cheekbones, and as powerful as Roger Taylor’s drums.

And, above all else, it was fun: How could it not be with so many hits in the Duran Duran catalog and so many memories for a crowd full of fans who were there when Duran Duran videos ruled MTV in the ’80s?

After opening with “The Chauffeur,” one of the few deep cuts in the set, Duran Duran jumped straight into the hits – “Wild Boys,” “Hungry Like the Wolf,” and “A View to a Kill,” their James Bond movie theme followed in quick succession.

“The last month we’ve just been thinking (about Cruel World) and how we’re going to make it the best thing possible,” Le Bon told the crowd in the middle of that run of songs. “And now we’re here and it’s happening!”

All four original Durannies are in their early to mid-60s – older like their original fans, but young for elder statesmen of rock – and they and the touring musicians and backing vocalists all sounded strong throughout the performance. The middle of the set slowed things down a little with songs such as “Careless Memories,” “Ordinary World,” and “New Moon on Monday.”

The end of their night raced through more up-tempo bops. “The Reflex” and a mashup of Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” with the Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer” – they covered the latter song on the 2023 album “Danse Macabre” – finished off the main set.

“Save a Prayer” opened the encore with the field in front of the stage awash in twinkling cell phone lights before “Rio” sent the crowd and the festival home for another year.

Here’s what else we caught while wandering between the three stages at Cruel World on Saturday:

A rare reunion: Tones On Tail, a side project of Bauhaus’s guitarist Daniel Ash and drummer Kevin Haskins, reunited at Cruel World to play its first show since 1984, the same year it released “Pop,” the group’s one album. More post-punk than goth, Tones of Tail impressed those who’d slipped away from Duran Duran on the main stage to hear Ash scatter shards of electric guitar atop Haskin’s expressive drumming and the loping basslines of Diva Dompe, Haskins’ daughter.

With Saturday’s performance, Ash and Haskins have now played all three years of Cruel World in all three bands they share – Bauhaus was there in 2022, and last year, Love and Rockets performed. Highlights included the jazzy swing of “Happiness,” “Lions,” and “Go!” which, alas, we missed to head back for the final run of Duran Duran.

New kids, old block: Cruel World isn’t strictly a day for older acts. New groups inspired by the OG bands on the bill also show up, and on Saturday a trio of those stood out.

Dreamcar , which includes the three guys from No Doubt – bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young – is fronted by singer Davey Havok of AFI. They play a kind of modern new wave and fans at the main stage in the late afternoon responded strongly to songs such as “We Rats,” “Kill For Candy,” and a cover of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.”

After nightfall, two more relatively younger bands showed off what they’ve learned from their post-punk elders, with the English band Placebo mixing singer Brian Molko’s electric guitars with shimmering synths on fan favorites such as “Every You, Every Me” and “Special K,” and the American band Interpol as powerful as always on highlights that include “The Rover” and “Rest My Chemistry.”

Rule Britannia : So much of the music of Cruel World has roots in the United Kingdom, and this year a handful of British bands made their Cruel World debuts.

Simple Minds drew a large crowd to the second stage for its anthemic Scottish rock. “Promised You a Miracle,” “All The Things She Said,” and a cover of the Call’s “The Walls Came Down” were all great singalongs, but they paled in comparison to the response to “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” the band’s biggest hit thanks to its placement in the soundtrack to “The Breakfast Club.” To hear the crowd sing an extended take on its melody as the sunset on the Arroyo Seco was truly moving.

Fellow Scots the Jesus and Mary Chain were also powerful on noisy pop that included songs such as “Happy When It Rains,” “Head On,” and “Just Like Honey,” while Heaven 17’s glossy synth-pop had the crowd dancing to tunes including “Let Me Go” and “Penthouse and Pavement.” and a cover of Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

Bowie is also a touchstone for Gary Numan, whose chilly synths and guitars owe a lot to Bowie’s Berlin era. Numan returned to Cruel World on Saturday to play his solo debut album “The Pleasure Principle” in full, and the set felt much more successful than his 2023 turn which featured newer, less satisfying material.

New band, old beats: Lol Tolhurst x Budgie x Jackknife Lee is a new trio made up of the Cure’s original drummer Tolhurst, Siouxsie and Banshee’s drummer Budgie, and Irish producer Lee. Their debut album “Los Angeles” arrived near the end of 2023, with guest vocalists singing vocals over the dual-drumkits and guitar of the band.

Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse sang on the album, and he along with album guests Arrow De Wilde of L.A. band Starcrawler and rapper-trumpeter Pan Amsterdam showed up to Cruel World to perform their songs live. Brock also stuck around for a cover the Cure song “A Forest,” another highlight in a day full of them.

Duran Duran Cruel World

In the end, the weekend’s solar storm didn’t end up shorting out this year’s Cruel World festival at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Saturday (May 11) . Instead, bands including Duran Duran , Blondie and Simple Minds lit up the golf course with a fiery musical energy that was all the more impressive for their long tenures. From Debbie Harry ’s glittering cloak of mirrors to Duran Duran’s vibrant visuals, the festival’s more than two dozen acts showed they were consummate performing pros whose music remains beloved to their fans — not to mention still played constantly, whether it’s at Trader Joe’s or on the radio.

Popular on Variety

With 30 bands spread across three stages, even the most ardent new waver couldn’t sprint back and forth and catch them all. Hard choices had to be made, triaged by those who haven’t been to the U.S. in a while, given the heavy British lineup.

The Stranglers – currently on their 50th anniversary tour — are down to just one original member, after the death of two original musicians during the pandemic. Original bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel ably serves as frontman for the band, which combines an early punk attitude with harpsichord tones and sweet pop songs like “Golden Brown” for an indelible sound that brought the audience to its feet early in the afternoon.

It was a Scottish two-fer on the Sad Girls stage as The Jesus and Mary Chain performed, kicking off with “Jamcod” from their recent album “Glasgow Eyes,” laced with all the fuzz and feedback their fans expect. Ethereal vocalist Zanias joined in on “Just Like Honey” and “Sometimes Always.”

Next up was Simple Minds, playing in the U.S. for the first time in six years and rallying the crowd with much of the same warm enthusiasm as Billy Idol did on the same stage at last year’s Cruel World. Jim Kerr was a rousing force, with notable contributions from drummer Cherisse Osei and vocalist Sarah Brown. The short set touched on high points in their shimmering sound, from heavy-rotation hits “Promised You a Miracle” and “(Don’t You) Forget About Me” to a cover of The Call’s “And the Walls Came Down.”

Soft Cell’s more danceclub-like approach was a marked shift from Simple Minds’ large and soulful ensemble, but nonetheless compelling for longtime fans of “Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.” The influential album’s songs dominated the set along with projected images of neon-lit strip clubs on screen, an album cover come to life. Marc Almond has been the poster boy for danceable, transgressive sleazepop for at least 43 years now, and his yearning torch songs set to a heavy beat are almost unclassifiable as new wave or any other genre. The band brought out New York “dystopian drag terrorist” Christeene in deathly makeup to gyrate and sing backup on “Nighthawks” and “Sex Dwarf.”

Blondie played a fairly long set by festival standards, with Debbie Harry powering through a dozen hits as darkness fell. A highlight was “Heart of Glass,” with Harry donning a poncho covered in mirror shards that played off projections of glittering panes. Clem Burke’s drumming is as muscular as ever, while Harry’s seminal rapping on “Rapture” is an emotional flashback to the Lower East Side of the late 1970s.

Duran Duran showed their staying power with a flashy, encompassing set that kicked off with “The Chauffeur” and never let up, with the familiar James Bond theme song previewing “A View to a Kill.” The band unleashed some fun covers of “White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It)” plus a “Girls on Film” meets “Psycho Killer” mash-up with audience participation. Clad in silver jeans and his new wave-errific chartreuse biker jacket, Simon LeBon threw himself passionately into the set, striking a thoughtful note while dedicating “Ordinary World” to the people of Ukraine and also Palestine and Israel. After audience members lit up the sky with phone lights and sang along to “Save a Prayer,” Duran Duran capped the set with “Rio,” and it was clear that the band has been a meaningful part of many fans’ lives all these years.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

stranglers tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

stranglers tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
