Holiday Lights Tours

Celebrate the holidays with lights. We offer 9 different Holiday Lights tours.

  • Holiday Lights Tours A through D are each approximately 3 hours and generally begin at 6:30 PM and end at 9:30 PM. Holiday Lights Tour A is from 5:30 to 8:00 PM on Sundays.
  • Holiday Lights Tours E through G are each approximately 4 hours and begin at 5:30 PM and end at 9:30 PM.
  • Holiday Lights Tour H is approximately 5 hours and begins at 5:00 PM and ends at 10:00 PM.
  • Holiday Lights Tour I is approximately 7 hours and begins at 4:00 PM and ends at 11:00 PM.

Select one or more tours that appeal to you. We can be flexible on the starting times; just let us know what is your preference.

The sun sets on:

The above stated times are the results of Google searches.

We generally start the 3-hour tours at 6:30 PM to:

  • Begin after sunset so that we can see the beauty of the lights against a dark background.
  • Allow people to have time for dinner before the tour, often at the restaurant from where we begin.
  • Avoid some of the rush hour traffic on Monday through Friday between 5:00 and 6:30 PM.
  • Give time for people to commute from work to the starting location for the tour if their work day ends between 5:00 and 6:00 PM.
  • Finish at a reasonable hour that will allow participants time to drive home while they are still alert.
  • Hopefully conclude before our participants begin falling asleep.
  • Provide the opportunity to have sufficient sleep before going to school or work the next day as is relevant.
  • Enable parents to get back to their youngsters or to put them to bed at a reasonable time.

Each tour has at least one bathroom and refreshment break, usually at a Starbucks, where one can buy holiday drinks.

Each tour begins with about a 5 to 10 minute introduction.

Schedule these tours at least 1 month in advance to better enhance your chances of reserving the date that you want. These tours fill quickly. People begin reserving dates in August, four months in advance. The earliest time to go on a tour should be the first weekend of December; however, some people may still be putting up their lights. The latest time to go on a tour probably should be the weekend after Christmas. Although lights may be up until the Epiphany on January 6, many people and organizations take their lights down on the weekend after Christmas. The total window for these tours is approximately 6 weeks with the 3 weeks from December 4th through the 25th being the ideal period.

Some clients occasionally schedule to take these tours in late November. We will be glad to accommodate you, but be forewarned that you will see fewer light displays than if you can wait a couple of weeks.

We conduct these tours any day we have a request, Sunday through Saturday. The best days to take such a tour are Monday through Thursday. Less traffic is driving through the neighborhoods during the main work day nights. On weekends, particularly on the two Saturdays just before Christmas, traffic may move at less than 2 miles/3 kilometers per hour in many neighborhoods as people are getting out of their vehicles to take selfies and they will block half or all of the flow of vehicles.

We can provide a variety of holiday music, movies for groups of 6 or more, narratives about the communities that we visit and the traditions of the holidays, such as the Christmas tree, introduction and types of lights, Santa, music, depictions in cinema, ornaments, trivia, and more.

You can bring drinks that have covers, caps, and lids to reduce spillage. Eating in the vehicles is prohibited as crumbs and other items may be sticky and messy and cleaning up is additionally time consuming. We also stop for a break on each tour where one can have snacks.

Temperatures in Houston can vary from the 30s to the 80s degrees Fahrenheit/1 to 30 degrees Centigrade during this period. Dress appropriately as most of these tours involve going outside at some point(s).

3-Hour Holiday Lights Tours - Normally from 6:30 to 9:30 PM

Tour A — Near West Side of Houston Tour - The Waterwall, Galleria, Tanglewood, Uptown Park, River Oaks, Highland Village, and Greenway Plaza. We go through some of the most affluent neighborhoods in all of America and to the premier mall of Texas with a magnificent Christmas tree. On Sunday, we begin the tour at 5:30 PM to end at 8:30 PM. The reason that we start earlier is that The Galleria normally closes on Sundays at 7:00 PM. To have sufficient time to go into The Galleria and see the biggest Christmas tree in Houston, we have to begin early. This is the most popular tour, probably because of the reputation and prestige of the areas. The huge homes and trees have lots of lights. This tour starts and ends at the Cleburne Cafeteria at 3606 Bissonnet Street and Edloe Street, Houston, Texas 77005.

Tour B — North and Central Houston - Woodland Heights, Downtown, Midtown, and the Montrose Area. It begins in a classic neighborhood found in 1907 with huge oak trees and moves to the central business district where you can go or watch ice-skating. We then go through the redeveloped area of the 1990s and 2000s, and to one of the most famous gay communities in the US. This tour starts and ends at Chili’s at 2425 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77007. This is by the Taylor Street exit.

Tour C — Northwest Tour - Candlelight Plaza, Ella Lee Forest, Acres Homes, Prestonwood Forest, US 290,

Tour D — Southeast Tour - Green Tee, Glenbrook Valley, La Sallette Place, Washington Terrace, and Riverside Terrace. This tour goes from an elite suburb to an affluent Hispanic neighborhood to a few African American communities, one with a fantastic light show. This tour starts and ends at the McDonald’s Restaurant at 1619 South Loop West and Fannin Street, Houston, Texas 77054.

4-Hour Holiday Lights Tours - Normally from 5:30 to 9:30 PM

Tour E — Near Southwest - Meyerland, Maplewood North, Robindell, Sugar Land, and Greatwood. This tour starts and ends at the McDonald’s Restaurant at 4643 Beechnut Street, and I-610, Houston, Texas 77096.

Tour F — Northeast Tour - Kingwood. This tour starts and ends at Chili’s at 2425 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77007. This is by the Taylor Street exit off of I-10.

Tour G — Far Southwest of Houston - New Territory, Shadow Groves Estates, and Pecan Grove Plantation. This tour starts and ends at the McDonald’s at 5888 Richmond Avenue, Houston, Texas 77057. This is between Chimney Rock Road and Fountain View Drive.

5-Hour Holiday Lights Tour - Normally from 5:00 to 9:30 PM

Tour H — Galveston’s Moody Gardens and Dickinson’s Festival of Lights - Each of these stops are walking

excursions; thus, the weather has to cooperate. Food, drinks, and souvenirs are available. Walk through over 1 million lights. The tour starts and ends at Starbucks at 1450 Woodridge Street, Houston, Texas 77087.

7-Hour Holiday Lights Tour - Normally from 4:00 to 11:00 PM

Tour I — Far Northwest from Houston, College Station - Santa’s Wonderland A Texas Christmas

Experience. This includes admission to Santa’s Wonderland and to Santa’s Town, where movies constantly play on an outdoor screen, fires for smores and warmth are burning, you can have your photo taken with Santa (at an additional fee), and there are many restaurants and stores. This tour has 3 stops. This tour begins and ends at City Hall at 901 Bagby Street, Houston, Texas 77002.

The best places to see holiday lights in houston in 2022.

Several Houston-area neighborhoods offer extensive, themed light displays that can be enjoyed free of charge by community members. There also are ticketed displays being held throughout the region this month.

Holiday Light Strings

How do you navigate Houston nights during the holiday season?

Follow the Christmas lights, which are popping up just about everywhere.

Festive, colorful decorations can be found throughout the Houston region this December, from the heart of the city to the outlying suburbs. Some of the more elaborate light displays are created for special events and by businesses, while a handful of Houston-area neighborhoods have built reputations as viewing destinations during the holidays.

Houston Public Media has compiled a list of some of the best, family-friendly places to see Christmas lights this year – including subdivisions where you can take free, self-guided tours and locales where crowds gather and tickets are required.

HOMES (DECORATED) FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Woodland Heights: The historic Central Houston neighborhood is home to Lights in the Heights , the annual free event that features decked-out homes, street closures and a bike valet service. It's scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Saturday on Bayland and Woodland streets between Studewood and Beauchamp. If you'd rather not mess with parking and a big crowd, you can check out the lights in Woodland Heights on any other night.

River Oaks: The upscale area featuring some of the largest homes in the city is big on holiday lights as well. Decorations adorn the mansions throughout River Oaks as well as its spacious, well-manicured front lawns. In the nearby Galleria area, you also can spot festive lights while driving down Post Oak Boulevard.

Pecan Grove: Located in the suburb of Richmond southwest of the city, homes throughout Pecan Grove boast elaborate lights displays, holiday scenes and lawn inflatables.

Prestonwood Forest: This subdivision in Northwest Houston, just north of the Willowbrook area, has been dazzling families with themed light displays for decades. Its annual Nite of Lites is scheduled for this Saturday, when homes will be judged as part of a neighborhood-wide decoration competition, but the lights will stay on for visitors through New Year's Day.

Shepherd Park Plaza/Candlelight Plaza: The adjacent neighborhoods in North Houston started a unique tradition in the 1960s: adorning their streets with holiday-themed arches to create the semblance of Christmastime tunnels. Some of the arches are themed by street, and the homes lining those streets are lit up as well.

Green Tee Terrace: Homes in this Pearland subdivision also are lit up for the holidays. They will be showcased on Saturday night during the Tour De Lites , an annual bicycle tour that starts at Independence Park.

FREE DISPLAYS

City Lights Downtown Holiday Magic: Walking through a display of 100,000 lights on Bagby Street is among the many attractions during this monthlong event, which includes eight themed villages throughout Downtown Houston. Other fun to be had includes outdoor ice skating at Discovery Green, a Christmas tree display at The Alley Theater, photos with Santa Claus, sweet treats, movie showings and an interactive lights experience at the Marriott Marquis' Altitude Rooftop & Pool, where guests can float down a heated lazy river. Most but not all of the activities are free.

Dickinson Festival of Lights: Visitors can walk through an extensive lights display at Paul Hopkins Park in Dickinson, a suburb southeast of Houston that has been brightening the holidays for 25 years. The event is free, and so is parking and a shuttle service.

TICKETED DISPLAYS

Dasher's Lightshow Houston: Previously held in Hockley, Dasher's has taken its drive-thru display to the Humble Civic Center at 8233 Will Clayton Pkwy. in Humble. Featured are more than a million lights, which can be viewed nightly from 6-10 p.m. through Dec. 31. Tickets are $30 per vehicle.

Galaxy Lights at Space Center Houston: The interactive, technologically advanced lights display is viewable from 6-10 p.m. on most nights through Jan. 1, with tickets costing $19.95 for adults and $15.95 for children. Space Center Houston recommends that guests allocate 90 minutes for the experience, which spans across the property.

Light Park (Katy and Spring): Mile-long drive-thru lights displays, with corresponding music on the radio, are back at Typhoon Texas Waterpark in Katy and Hurricane Harbor Splashtown in Spring through Jan. 1. Tickets start at $39 per vehicle.

Lightscape at Houston Botanic Garden: See the garden in a new light with Lightscape, a 1-mile stroll with eye-catching visuals and accompanying music. Timed tickets start at $24 for adults and $14 for children (parking is extra). The event lasts through Jan. 1.

Magical Winter Lights at Houston Raceway Park: See more than 6 million lights, seven themed displays and illuminated castles, landmarks and sea creatures at the annual festival in Baytown, which is open daily through Jan. 7. Tickets start at $25.

Sugar Land Holiday Lights at Constellation Field: More than 3 million lights have been strung at the home ballpark of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. There are themed areas, food and carnival-like attractions, along with a 40-foot Christmas tree, as well as movie nights and pet nights. Adult tickets start at $15.

Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo: Animal-themed lanterns and glowing flowers are among the attractions at Zoo Lights, which has added a holiday light tunnel and an illuminated interactive dance floor on The Children's Zoo plaza. The event lasts through Jan. 8 but will be closed Dec. 7 as well as on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Adult tickets start at $24.45.

Rare solar storm might actually trigger northern lights in Houston

A severe geomagnetic storm directed at Earth could cause some problems for our planet this weekend. However—on more a positive note—it might also allow southern states, including Texas, to observe a  brilliant display normally only visible from the North and South Poles.

On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) issued a severe G4 geomagnetic storm watch—the first the agency has issued since 2005. G4s are the second-strongest form of geomagnetic storms. "Watches at this level are very rare," the SWPC said in a statement. "This is an unusual event."

The source is a sunspot cluster estimated to be 16 times the diameter of Earth. In fact, the group of  sunspots is so big you might be able to see it with your own eyes using solar eclipse glasses . Solar flares and eruptions from the sunspots directed at Earth could trigger "spectacular displays of aurora" from Friday through the weekend.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, is a colorful display of lights created as energetic charged particles from the Sun during solar storms collide with Earth's magnetic field at a high speed and interact with our planet's upper atmosphere. The auroras are typically observed illuminating the night sky at high altitudes. However, during intense solar activity, they can be spotted further south.

The SWPC said it's possible the auroras Friday night could be seen "as far south as Alabama and northern California." Under clear conditions, auroras can be best viewed from dark locations, away from the bright lights of the city. The ethereal lights were previously observed in the Texas Panhandle in December, tinting the night sky red.

Travis Herzog, chief meteorologist of ABC 13 Houston, said there is technically a chance residents in Austin to just north of Houston could see the auroras low on the northern horizon. Herzog shared a map depicting a solid green line, which he indicated anyone north of could possibly see the aurora. "I wouldn't get my hopes up too much here in Southeast Texas," he cautioned. "That said, if you want to go outside and try to catch a glimpse of it, tonight's aurora is predicted to peak in intensity between 1 AM and 4 AM. Just look north!"

Unfortunately,  solar flares could also unleash coronal mass ejections —explosions of plasma and magnetic fields—that when directed at Earth, could disrupt communications, GPS, and electric power grids on Earth. They can also interfere with space crafts and satellites. The SWPC said it has "notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action." The recent heightened solar activity is due to the Sun rapidly approaching the peak in its 11-year cycle.

WEATHER ALERT

7 warnings in effect for 9 counties in the area

Live power outage tracker: here’s how to find out when your power might be back on in houston, centerpoint energy reported 217,797 customers without power as of noon on monday..

Moriah Ballard , Digital Producer/Reporter

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – We may never know the true number of customers who lost power during Thursday night’s deadly storms because CenterPoint’s system got overwhelmed as we reached the height of the threat, but according to Mayor John Whitmire , it was more than 900,000.

Ten transmission towers were damaged, 7 in Harris County . Those take longer to repair. Customers connected to the transmission towers will have to wait longer for their service to be restored.

Harris County Judge Linda Hidalgo said those customers could be without power for two weeks.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN TRACK POWER OUTAGES

CenterPoint’s Outage Tracker had been intermittent for real-time data. Over the weekend the utility moved away from the tracker altogether and set up a website page that tells how many customers are still without power and mapped out estimated times for power to be restored .

UPDATE: On Friday night, a source at CenterPoint Energy confirmed that the systems are still be delayed due to the high volume of cases reported.

“We are experiencing processing delays and slower than normal system performance due to the number of outage cases being reported because of the extensive damage throughout the region. We will continue to share information on our Power Alert System, Outage Tracker and on X at @CenterPoint as the information becomes available,” a representative at CenterPoint told KPRC 2 in an email.

You can also report outages on the same page and sign up to get alerts on the progress. Also, you can put in your address in to check the status of real-time outages in your neighborhood.

Sign up for alerts and you should get status reports on repairs.

LATEST UPDATE ON OUTAGES

Following severe storms in the Houston area Thursday night, hundreds of thousands of people are still out of power.

According to the CenterPoint outage map - 545,784 people were without power as of 8:50 p.m.

CenterPoint Energy also reported on X (Formerly Twitter) that their updates may be delayed or unavailable due to the widespread loss of power.

Severe weather batters USA: Death count rises in Texas; tornado touchdowns near Pittsburgh

Authorities reported more weather-related deaths in Texas on Friday night after a storm system battered the Houston area . Meanwhile, severe weather is set to wreak more havoc in the Southeast, bringing a risk of hail, damaging wind, and tornadoes to the area over the weekend.

On Friday evening, the National Weather Service issued tornado watches for parts of southern Georgia, southeast Alabama and the Florida Panhandle and confirmed three tornado touchdowns in the Pittsburgh area.

NWS also issued flash flood warnings Friday night for parts of Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio and Florida. Up to 3.5 inches of rain had already fallen in some areas, the weather service said, and more was on the way.

The latest round of severe weather comes after Houston woke up to scenes of destruction. Severe storms with winds of up to 100 mph spewed debris across roads and littered the ground downtown with broken glass.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed three additional storm-related deaths in a social media post Friday evening. Earlier, authorities reported at least four deaths were caused by the storm.

"We're in recovery mode," Houston Mayor John Whitmire said.

The National Weather Service confirmed one EF-1 tornado touched down Thursday night near Cypress, about 30 miles northwest of Houston, with winds reaching 110 mph. It was also investigating reports of an unconfirmed tornado in Galena Park, about 11 miles east of downtown, NWS meteorologist Jeff Evans said Friday. "The majority of this damage is straight-line winds," he said.

At least 4 dead in Texas storm

Mary Benton, spokesperson for the mayor, told USA TODAY the Harris County medical examiner's office would identify those killed and determine the causes of death.

Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said Thursday that two of the deaths there were caused by falling trees. Another person died in a crane accident.

On Friday, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said it would take time to assess impacts from the storm, which she said knocked out the power for 740,000 customers, most of them residents of Harris County.

"This kind of wind is something we have not seen in Harris County since Hurricane Alicia in 1983," she said.

Alicia, a Category 3 hurricane, swept across the state in August of 1983, bringing winds of up to 110 mph, according to the NWS . It caused more than $7 billion in damage.

Power restoration could take weeks in some areas, officials warn

Hidalgo said she had signed a disaster declaration on Friday morning and Houston's government was in contact with the White House.

At a news briefing Friday afternoon, Hidalgo warned that power restoration could take weeks in some areas.

Most of the storm damage appeared to be around Cypress, Hidalgo said. A helicopter scan of the impacted area showed the destruction was not as widespread as she expected.

The storms come weeks after the Houston area faced floods after a bout of heavy rain and thunderstorms earlier this month. In late April, Groveton and Trinity X — two towns around 100 miles north of Houston — received a respective 10 and 9 inches of rain.

Abbott issued a disaster proclamation late last month in response to severe storms that hit the state weeks ago with flooding, hail, and hazardous wind. In a letter on Tuesday , he asked President Joe Biden to declare a major disaster for the state.

As of Friday morning, debris had been cleared from freeways but was still scattered over individual neighborhoods, Hidalgo said.

'Downtown is a mess'

On Thursday night, Whitmire urged residents to stay home amid the dangerous road conditions. Widespread power outages had also knocked out traffic lights across the city, posing traffic control hazards for morning commuters. Whitmire said officials were also "concerned" about the dangers of broken glass on roadways.

"Downtown is a mess. It's dangerous due to the glass and the lack of traffic lights," he said. "So stay at home. I can't emphasize that, repeat that enough."

Fire Chief Peña said the majority of emergency calls to the fire department were to report downed wires and gas leaks. "If you're smelling gas inside your home, it could be potentially hazardous. So please call 911 if there is a smell of gas, but do so outside of that building," he said.

More than 900 customers of the utility company CenterPoint Energy had lost their power, he said. Power restoration would take up to 48 hours for some residents. The company said on X that restoring full power would be a "days-long restoration effort."

More than 420,000 outages, or 20% of all power accounts, were reported in the Houston area as of Friday morning, according to USA TODAY's national power outage tracker .

Houston's metro service said on Friday that shuttles would service the Purple and Green train lines due to power outages and debris on the tracks. Morning commuters should expect travel delays.

Schools throughout the area shuttered their doors in response to the severe weather. Whitmire also asked employers in the downtown area to allow their employees to work from home.

By Friday morning, the risk of severe weather in Houston was marginal, with cloudy skies and a few showers expected in the afternoon, according to the Weather Channel.

Storms to bring hail, rain, possible tornadoes to Southeast

But the storm system is set to bring severe thunderstorms and excessive rainfall to the lower Mississippi Valley and Alabama on Friday and through the weekend.

"If you like rain and storms the next 2 days are for you," the National Weather Service in Birmingham posted on X on Friday morning. Southern Alabama, including Montgomery and Selma, could see a few tornadoes as the area is hit with hail and "damaging winds" of up to 60 mph.

As the storm moves eastward, northeastern Texas and parts of Alabama and Florida could be inundated with up to 8 inches of rain, potentially triggering serious flooding, according to AccuWeather .

Through that night, areas in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama could be at risk of flash flooding, the Weather Channel reported . Amid damaging winds on Saturday, the area faces an isolated tornado threat.

"Gusty winds and hail" would be the main threats in strong storms expected to hit parts of Southeast Mississippi, according to the weather service in Mobile.

Parts of Florida also endured heavy wind on Friday morning – the southern coast near Tallahassee was hit with wind gusts of up to 70 mph, the weather service reported.

Further south, temperatures hit record highs earlier this week. On Wednesday, a heat index of 115 degrees in Key West tied the area's all-time record, AccuWeather reported .

The same day, Miami temperatures hit 96 degrees , just two degrees below its record high for the month. The weather service warned that the city could see its heat index enter the "triple digits" over the weekend.
