BTS returns to the stage after a successful summer dominating the music charts.

The group led Billboard's songs of summer chart with its second English-language single "Butter."

The annual chart tracks the most popular songs from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year’s charts tracked June 12 through Sept. 11) based on cumulative performance on the weekly streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100.

BTS’ “Butter” held firm at the No. 1 position for the duration of the seasonal chart, Billboard announced Sept. 7. That same day, BTS retook the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 chart, thanks to the fiery Megan Thee Stallion remix.

“It’s been a long, long time. Hello, ARMY!” BTS ‘ V yelled to the cheering crowd that packed Los Angeles’ SoFi   Stadium on Sunday. For  their first offline concert in two years, superstar Korean boy band BTS  —  Jin , Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook — returned to the stage with the four-day concert series “ BTS Permission t o  Dance  On  Stage  –  LA,” with the first two shows on Saturday and Sunday.

See latest videos, charts and news

With the upper balconies of the venue brimming with fans, the septet  distributed light sticks  to concertgoers  that glowed with different co lors and patterns throughout the show.  As the light sticks were activated during various segments, the group involve d  fans from every level of the stadium and create d  a more intimate connection between the boys and the audience.   At one point, the light  sticks spelled out words like “BTS” and “ARMY.”

BTS Surprise L.A. Crowd With Megan Thee Stallion 'Butter' Cameo

As a treat to their longtime fans, BTS performed early classics such as “Save Me”  from  2016’s   The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever and “Fake Love” from  2018’s Love Yourself: Tear, along with newer hits like “Life Goes On”  from 2020’s BE   and their English-language tracks “ Butter, ” “ Dynamite ” and, of course, “Permission t o  Dance.”

After earning six No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 in 13 months (starting with “Dynamite” in August 202 0 through “My Universe” with Coldplay in September) , BTS were revved up and ready to go, as evidenced by their high-energy performance   and roaring response from their  fans.  From a special guest appearance to adorable between-song moments, here are the five best things that happened at BTS’ Los Angeles concert on Sunday.

1. Kicking it off with “On”

At 7:30 p.m. PT, concertgoers felt vibrations across the stadium as the lights dimmed and the seven members of BTS opened the show with “On”  from  Map of the Soul: 7 , which was released just a few weeks before the pandemic.  Dressed in all-white, BTS were backed by drummers and dancers, reminiscent of a marching band.

With a  full  production including red fireworks  in just the first song ,  t he performance signaled the band’s triumphant return to live concerts following their canceled world tour due to COVID- 19, and  set the bar high for the  rest of the setlist.

2.  Getting close to the band:  “We’re going to you!”

During their performance  of “Telepathy,” BTS surprised the audience by  taking a  lap  around  the circumference of the stadium floor.  Standing atop orange platforms on wheels, three of the members started on the right side of the stage and the other four started on the left. The platforms then made their way around  the floor as fans leaned over the balcony to get closer to the pop stars.

The move was  just one of the ways the band created a more intimate show for those sitting further away. BTS also made sure to   play to the cameras onstage, which were then projected on the stadium’s 70,000-square-foot big screen for the whole crowd to see clearly.

3. Megan  Thee  Stallion’s surpr ise appearance

Donning a pink bodysuit and  matching knee-high boots, the “Savage” rapper joined the band onstage to perform their “Butter” remix . Megan Thee Stallion was scheduled to join BTS during the American Music Awards on Nov. 21  but pulled out of the performance at the last minute citing an “unexpected personal matter.”

“We feel sad for the AMAs, but now you’re here !” RM said when Meg hit the stage. Before bowing out, the rapper expressed her gratitude for having the opportunity to make up for the AMAs, saying,  “Thank  y’all  for having me!”

4.  Jin’s  pigtails

After BTS’ final costume change,  Jin returned with pigtails tied in red bows to close out the concert. In an adorable moment between songs, Jin  and the members playfully channeled  the popular Netflix show   Squid Game .  With  Jin’s hairstyle mirroring the South Korean show’s   “Red Light, Green Light” doll, the other members jokingly   sang the tune  featured prominently during the episode as  Jin looked back at the audience, mimicking the doll’s actions during the scene.

5. BTS’ heartfelt message to their fans

Rounding out the show, BTS  took turns sharing how much playing in front of their fans means to each of them. Through a translator, J-Hope shared his message first with: “This is probably the only night we’ll speak in Korean. ” He continued, saying: “ This is a very meaningful concert for you guys. But I think the concert  is going to be a big part of my history and my memory too. This is also gonna  be  really meaningful  to me. I hope that tonight was a  highlight  for your own story and your own life me mories. ”

Jimin  also  took the mic   and said, “Today, I’m also  gonna  speak in Korean because I really want to share how I feel in more detail.”  Jimin added: “To be honest, I don’t think I could do all that I could do for you guys in the last two years , s o it’s an honor and I’m really moved that all of you waited for us. ”

Then, RM revealed how  he thought he used up  all of his energy on the first night of the concert series but that   the ARMY gave him strength  to keep going. “You guys are the magic,” he shared with the crowd.

Wrapping up the show, purple and white balloons were launched into the crowd as BTS performed their final song, “Permission to Dance.”

K-pop group BTS is continuing its world tour in April, with four newly announced dates at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The global superstars will perform on April 8, 9, 15 and 16, with the last day of the tour being streamed live online. Additionally, the group’s event “Live Play in Las Vegas” will be held on all four days at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The news comes after the group’s announcement last week of concert dates in Seoul, South Korea on March 10, 12 and 13 at the Seoul Olympic Stadium. Those performances will be BTS’ first in its home country since 2019. BTS performed four sold-out shows at SoFi stadium in Los Angeles at the end of last year, filling the stadium with tens of thousands of fans. According to Billboard , the group’s tour dates in L.A. grossed $33.3 million with 214,000 tickets sold — the most made by a run of shows at a single venue since 2012.

BTS is best known for hits “Butter” and “Dynamite,” with the former nominated for best pop duo/group performance at this year’s Grammy Awards . The nomination is BTS’ second, following last year’s nomination for “Butter.” The 64th Annual Grammy Awards will be held in Las Vegas just before BTS’ concert dates, on April 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. BTS has yet to win a Grammy, but is known for its extremely devoted fans who have helped catapult the group to global superstardom since its debut in 2013.

BTS then brought the concert to an in-person audience at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles over four nights from November 27 to 28 and December 1 to 2.

It was announced that “Permission to Dance On Stage” would also be held for in-person audiences in Seoul at the Olympic Stadium in March 2022. On February 23, Big Hit Music announced on Twitter that BTS would next bring their “Permission to Dance On Stage” concert to Las Vegas at the Allegiant Stadium, from April 8 to 9 and April 15 to 16. The April 16 will have an online live-streaming component. All four dates will also be broadcast live on a big screen at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in a “Live Play” event.

Meanwhile, the 64th Grammy Awards will be taking place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 3. The Grammys were originally supposed to take place in January in Los Angeles but was rescheduled and relocated due to concerns over the Omicron variant of COVID-19. BTS had been scheduled to fly to the United States for the original date and canceled their flight when it was postponed, but the group is expected to attend the rescheduled date. The group has been nominated at the Grammys for the second consecutive year.

BTS “Permission to Dance on Stage” Concert Recap and Review

BTS Permission to Dance on Stage

After nearly two years of not being able to tour, let alone hold a concert with people present due to COVID-19, Grammy-nominated Kpop group BTS is back! On September 28, 2021, the septet thrilled fans by announcing they’d be back in LA to perform for the first time in two years. The wait was well worth it as the group performed two out of four sold-out shows at SoFi stadium this past weekend.

The group’s riding high after their wins at the American Music Awards where they took home top honors for Artists of the Year, Favorite Pop Song, and Favorite Pop Duo/group. And during Sunday, November 28th’s show there was a buzz in the air as fans gathered early, well before the group was set to take the stage. The feeling was electric as fans fortunate enough to grab a ticket lined up to buy merch or just to hang out with friends while eagerly awaiting the return of BTS to the live stage.

BTS fans, known as ARMY, were on their feet the second the lights turned off and they knew it was go-time. After the intro played out, BTS could be seen in what appeared to be jail cells from which they were eventually freed. (The cells were likely a metaphor for finally being free to perform concerts.) After exiting their cells, the group launched into a jaw-dropping performance of “ON.” BTS has previously expressed their disappointment in not being able to perform that song off their Map of the Soul: 7 album, released in February 2020. Member Taehyung, better known as his stage name V, has been particularly vocal about wanting to perform the song in front of fans. And the Korean group didn’t hold back during their performance of “ON,” leading right into a nice remix of their song “Fire” while literal flames leapt out of the jail cells.

After an electrifying performance of their song “Dope,” BTS took the opportunity to say hello and introduce themselves to their passionate fans – an introduction that earned a deafening round of cheers.

Throughout the night BTS performed a mix of their older songs as well as newer ones including their smash hits that earned number one spots on the Billboard Hot 100. During “Life Goes On,” fans were shown snapshots on the jumbo screen of each member as they performed while on a bed, giving the song a nice cozy vibe.

“Dynamite,” which earned them their very first number one on Billboard’s Hot 100, was delivered with a show-stopping performance. The group was accompanied for the song by a live band and back-up singers, giving it an extra burst of energy and making those in attendance want to take to their feet and dance along with BTS.

BTS and Megan Thee Stallion

The concert was at its zenith when, while BTS was performing their latest hit “Butter,” Grammy Award-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion came out all decked beautiful one-piece pink outfit to do her part in the “Butter Remix.” The crowd went absolutely wild the moment she stepped on stage. It was a fantastic surprise and nice treat for fans of both BTS and Megan Thee Stallion.

Before closing the show, the seven members took the time to talk to the fans who were all on their feet listening intently. One speech in particular that stood out for me was member Suga saying, “For me – and for all seven of us – this ‘Permission to Dance’ performance was a big challenge. Let me tell you why we set this up with no solo songs and just our group songs. We prepared everything from the cue sheets to the devices, the stages, because we’ve been away for two years and we wanted your full attention and your full focus on all seven of us.”

BTS closed the show with “Permission to Dance” which left the audience energized as giant purple and white balloons and confetti floated around, while a stage full of backup dancers danced alongside as BTS performed their iconic dance (which includes sign language).

Additional Concert Highlights:

– “Black Swan” was hands-down one of their best performances of the night. Their backup dancers appeared on stage wearing white feathers on their arms which transformed into wings as each member did a different intricate move/dance ending with member Jin being lifted into the air as his wings flapped. That led into the performance of “Black Swan.” It was delicately beautiful and graceful, and for a moment you forgot you were in the middle of a concert and not at the theater.

– During their song “Telepathy,” the members got into two different moving, decked-out carts as they wheeled around the stadium singing and greeting fans in sections further back from the stage.

– The energy for “So What” and “Idol” was epic. BTS left no stone unturned with those performances, giving the already hyped crowd even more fun-loving energy.

– Lastly, a medley of fan favorite songs “Blood Sweat & Tears” and “Fake Love” gave off a sexy, yet cool vibe.

The members of BTS are truly stunning performers. Each member poured 100% into each performance and they’ve proven once again what true showmen they are. Witnessing a Korean boyband not only sell out four nights at SoFi Stadium but looking around at the diversity of the crowd was remarkable. People who may not know Korean but were singing Korean lyrics at the top of their lungs was a beautiful sight to see. From seeing a woman with a sign that read “89-year-old Army” to kids with their parents all brought together by their love of BTS, the “Permission to Dance on Stage” concert was an unforgettable experience.

Should additional invitations become available, we will notify you by text message. Please keep in mind that any additional ticket inventory will be extremely limited and tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.

How will I know if I move off the Waitlist?

Keep your phone close by as your text notification can come at any time after the sale begins. When notified, you’ll receive two text messages: the first one has the link to the sale, and the second contains your unique access code. You’ll also want to closely watch your email just in case there are text delivery issues such as an incorrectly entered number or blocked carriers. In that case we’ll email your access code details to the address you use for your Ticketmaster account.

Whose ID do I bring if I buy tickets on my Ticketmaster account, but use my parent/guardian credit card to purchase a Soundcheck Package?

Bring your personal ID to the show. When shopping for tickets, please make sure you sign in to your personal Ticketmaster account, not the credit card holder. Any tickets purchased will be issued to the Ticketmaster account holder’s name.

BTS' 'Permission To Dance On Stage' concert setlist was everything.

BTS' Permission To Dance On Stage LA Concert Setlist Was So Freakin' Special

"Butter" was a whole mood live.

The BTS boys are back! Yep, the K-pop band performed their first full concert for fans since 2019 on Nov. 27, with another one a day later on Nov. 28. The shows were part of a special four-night slew of concerts in Los Angeles, and the guys had lots of surprises up their sleeve for the ARMY. The setlist was full of fan-favorite tracks, and the bandmates brought ~major~ energy to LA’s SoFi Stadium. For fans who are attending the next string of concerts on Dec. 1 and 2, here are the songs you can probably expect to hear.

Elite Daily was on the scene at the band’s second show of the weekend, which held one surprise after another. Fans finally got to hear the “Butter” remix live for the first time when Megan Thee Stallion took the stage halfway through the show. Other well-known hits included “Dynamite,” “Boy With Luv,” and “Permission To Dance” — the song which inspired the concert series name.

At one point in the show, Suga spoke out about the meticulously curated setlist and why they put so much effort into choosing the songs they did. “Let me tell you why we set this concert up with no solo songs and just our group songs,” he said. “We prepared everything from the cue sheets, the devices, the stages, everything. Because we've been away for two years and we wanted your full attention and your full focus on all seven of us."

BTS' 'Permission To Dance On Stage' LA concert setlist was epic.

The sold-out night of music kicked off with BTS’ hit “On,” and they delivered bop after bop after bop. Despite holding their concerts in a massive stadium, BTS managed to make the night feel like an intimate one for fans. Elite Daily viewed the show from the field-level Bootsy Bellows lounge with VIPER (VIP Event Relations) where every expression on the band’s faces were visible (and mostly filled with smiles). However, there were quite a few emotional moments as well. At one point, J-Hope visibly teared up onstage while expressing his gratitude for the ARMY.

The band’s speeches were all so sweet, but of course, the music is the most important part of any concert. Here’s every song BTS played at their Nov. 28 show in Los Angeles.

Hayley Erbert Reflects on Life Coming to 'a Screeching Halt' and Her Triumphant Return to the Stage as Dance Tour Ends

H ayley Erbert required an emergency craniectomy in December 2023 and returned to tour with husband Derek Hough only four months later

Hayley Erbert Hough is back where she belongs — the mainstage.

Five months after being hospitalized for a cranial hematoma and requiring an emergency craniectomy, Hayley, 29, wrapped up the Symphony of Dance tour with her husband Derek Hough in San Diego, California, on May 19.

In an Instagram post four days later, the dancer showcased the highlights of her return to the stage and penned a tribute to “one of the most fulfilling experiences” in her life.

“The Symphony of Dance tour has only been over for a few days and I still haven’t quite found the words to express my emotions,” Hayley wrote. “When we kicked it off in September, I was on cloud nine; getting to travel and perform with my newlywed husband, doing the most challenging show I have ever done in my entire life.”

She continued, “Then December 6th rolled around, and everything came to a screeching halt.”

Despite her “uncertainty” about resuming tour only months after her health scare, she proclaimed, “I DID IT!”

“This tour reignited many parts of me that have been dim for so long. So, for that, I cannot thank everyone who came out to support us on this wild journey enough. I am so grateful to still be here, with you all, doing what I love,” Hayley concluded. “Thank you, thank you, thank you 🫶.”

On Dec. 7, 2024, Derek, 35, revealed on Instagram that Hayley had been rushed to the hospital after experiencing symptoms of a cranial hematoma — when blood collects in the skull — while on tour. A week later, he posted another update saying that Hayley needed a skull implant to “replace the piece [of the skull] that was removed during the craniectomy.”

In an emotional video on Instagram following the craniectomy, the couple, who married in 2023, discussed Hayley's “miraculous” recovery and thanked everyone who sent words of support amid her recuperation.

“Thank you all so much for all of your messages, your love, your energy, your light, your prayers. Thank you guys for all of it because it means so much to me and to us as a family. And genuinely, I believe it’s what’s gotten me through this a little bit faster and it’s what helped me heal,” Hayley said in tears.

In April, the pair announced that the Symphony of Dance tour would pick back up in Melbourne, Florida, with Hayley rejoining the tour only four months after the surgery. According to Derek, they had “extensive conversations and tests and results from different doctors” to clear Hayley to perform.

"I am just so excited to get back out and dance again after having something so traumatic happen," Hayley told PEOPLE at the time.

Melanie Martinez is not your typical reality singing show contestant. Martinez’s first widespread public recognition came from her audition on The Voice with her cover of Britney Spears’s “Toxic.” Despite not winning, she has become one of the show’s biggest success stories. But what sets her apart from most of the pop acts that come out of such shows is her steady, individualistic vision. In a setting where contestants were voted for on the basis of who they presented to be, Martinez chooses to play in the world of imagination. And on the Trilogy Tour — which brought her before a sold-out crowd at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on May 15 — she showcases the evolution of her alter ego, “Cry Baby.”

On her debut album of the same name, Martinez utilized childhood imagery as a pastel landscape to lure you into her stark, biting stories of struggles, including addiction, heartache, and family dysfunction. She kept the kid-like theme on K-12 , with a continuation leading the baby imagery to turn school-themed. Her latest record, Portals , shows “Cry Baby” reborn as an earthy, pink-skinned being, with a more mature and lively sound.

You may have heard of Melanie Martinez through the virality of one of the songs off of her debut album, Cry Baby , released in 2015 but gaining popularity through TikTok in 2020. We are currently in the midst of a behemoth of live music, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour . And with an interest for the entirety of Martinez’s catalog from both day-one fans and new TikTok fans alike, it’s the perfect time for Martinez to embark on a tour through her own eras. Martinez started her L.A. show with part one of the trilogy, dedicated to Cry Baby , as she opened with the title track. She was accompanied by a live band on either side of her, and her dancers were dressed in baby outfits. As she moved into “Dollhouse,” the contrast of the pastel colors of the backing visuals added an eeriness to the message of her lyrics, including the line “No one ever listens / This wallpaper glistens / Don’t let them see what goes down in the kitchen” and “Everyone thinks that we’re perfect / Please don’t let them look through the curtains.”

Highlights from the Cry Baby portion of the show included Martinez dancing atop a giant stage that looked like alphabet blocks during “Alphabet Boy,” fan favorite “Play Date,” and a passionate rendition of “Pity Party,” which saw Martinez wailing, “I’ll cry if I want to.”

A giant wash of ocean water filled the screen behind Martinez and showed Cry Baby– themed props, such as baby toys and a crib, floating away as the show moved into part two: K-12 . During “Show & Tell,” Martinez pretended she was a puppet being pulled by strings with accompanying props and jagged choreography. Her commitment to the bit was impressive, as Martinez embodied a tortured doll onstage.

During “Nurse’s Office,” Martinez was pushed around laying on a hospital bed with a camera hanging above her face and the upper half of her body. Her backing dancers surrounded her and pretended to operate on her as she writhed in pain singing, “I’m bleeding… / Band-Aids won’t heal it.”

For “Class Fight,” Martinez and one of her dancers were on vertical moving seats on a post with a giant seesaw animated in the background. The way Martinez incorporated her sets into the story she was presenting showed an extreme amount of attention, effort, and care that is not typical of live shows. It was emotionally resonant, and made the show feel more effective than usual.

Moving into part three, Portals , “Cry Baby” was reborn as she donned a four-eyed fairy mask and a dress made up of what appeared to be faux elements of nature. Standouts included “Battle of the Larynx,” with its high-energy instrumentation that saw even the backing players dancing; “Void,” with its razor-sharp hooks and thrumming beat; and “Nymphology,” which saw Martinez beam as she watched the crowd scream the words out and jump in unison with her.

Having not addressed the crowd much at all throughout the show, it was a bit disarming at the end of the night as Martinez dropped out of “Cry Baby” and appeared to just be herself as she repeatedly thanked the audience for coming to the show. She seemed to be the opposite of how she was during the show in some ways: a bit shy rather than confident, soft in her movements rather over-assertive, and speaking with a sweet authenticity that contrasted the charged vocals that glided over a majority of her set.

And, while still wearing her “Cry Baby” mask, Martinez ended the show in the most mask-off way she could have:

“I love you…. Free Palestine!”

Subscriber only, entertainment | heart, cheap trick deliver old school delights at little caesars arena.

Heart's Nancy and Ann Wilson, from left, photographed in Baltimore, performed Tuesday night, May 21 at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena (Photo by Criss Cain)

That was “granted” a couple of time by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, who formed the band more than 50 years ago in Seattle — and by their 105-minute set of well-established classic rock songs.

It was an apt sentiment, as if the sparse, boomer-dominated audience, many sporting vintage concert T-shirts, was validating a kind of deed on memory lane. Heart and Cheap Trick, setlists full of hits primarily from the 70s, spare staging that eschewed the ramps, pyrotechnics, aerial stunts and confetti cannon so common in arenas these days — this show could just as easily have been at Cobo Arena 45 years ago. And rest assured that was exactly what those who did turn up on Tuesday wanted.

For Heart it was a return that was welcome in many ways. The group’s first metro area appearance in five years was also its first in Detroit proper since 1993, when the Wilsons played just down the street at the (then) State Theatre. It also found Heart beating stronger than it has in more than a decade, the Wilsons having gotten over interpersonal issues — stemming from a 2016 tour bus assault on Nancy’s songs by Ann’s husband’s — and visibly more comfortable in each other’s company, certainly than they were back in 2019 at the DTE Energy Music Theatre.

There was an easy rapport as well. Introducing “Dog & Butterfly,” Nancy waxed about Heart’s early days in the clubs and being approached by “a guy who told us, ‘Hey kids, you’re good. You should make an album. Here’s some money’.” “That’s how you remember it?!” Ann cracked in response, with the two laughing together.

Heart also benefited from the presence of a new and younger band — basically Tripsitter, which has been working with Ann during the past few years. The quintet’s energy, and particularly the triple guitar attack of Ryan Waters, Paul Moak and Ryan Wariner in addition to Nancy, provided a boost to the repertoire, which also included renditions of Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California” and “The Ocean” as well as a portion of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” at the end of Heart’s own “Straight On.”

The sisters also sampled their solo works during the 20-song set. A seated Ann — in powerful voice throughout the night and playing flute on a couple of songs — delivered “This Is Now” from her 2023 solo album “Another Door” (at Nancy’s suggestion, she said), while Nancy, who wore a Cheap Trick T-shirt under her blazer, performed the short solo acoustic guitar instrumental “4 Edward,” dedicated to the late Eddie Van Halen, from her 2021 release “You and Me.” But the night was primarily filled with Heart favorites, starting with “Bebe Le Strange” and finishing with “Barracuda,” and in between touching on the likes of “Never,” “Love Alive,” “Little Queen,” “Crazy On You,” “These Dreams” and “Mistral Wind.”

A particularly effective segment of the show found most of the band seated in a line and playing acoustic versions of “Dog & Butterfly” and “Dreamboat Annie” prior to “Going to California.” And Heart paired two of its hit 80s ballads, “Alone” and “What About Love,” into a seamless medley before rocking the main set to a close with “Magic Man.”

Cheap Trick, meanwhile, was better than a mere warm-up act, cranking through an hour’s worth of its proudly loud power pop. Its hits were there, of course — a back-loaded bomber’s run of “the Flame,” “I Want You to Want Me,” “Dream Police” and “Surrender,” and it was a family affair as guitarist Rick Nielsen’s son Daxx manned the drum set and silver-panted frontman Robin Zander’s son Robin Taylor Zander doubled his father’s lead vocals. (The group’s sound tech, Bill Kozy, hails from Detroit.)

But the real joys were early on, when Cheap Trick dug into its catalog for less-celebrated tracks such as “Oh, Candy” and “He’s a Whore” — an early set one-two punch from the group’s self-titled 1977 debut album — “Light Up the Fire,” the hard-hitting “Need Your Love” and “I Know What I Want,” sung by bassist Tom Petersson. Like Heart, Cheap Trick showed some effects of time marching on, especially on the mobility front, but the songs, also like Heart, have more than stood the test of time, which on Tuesday made the past feel very present indeed.

Summer Guide 2024: Tanglewood to feature wide range of music

Tanglewood features wide range of music this summer

Leaves rustling in a gentle breeze.

The sound of a violin or a piano drifting across the perfectly manicured lawn.

The occasional pop of a cork from a picnic blanket spread out beneath a tree.

These distinct sounds can often be found each summer at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra . This year is no exception. Concerts for every musical taste – from classical to classic rock, R&B to opera or indie rock – will be featured at this enchanting outdoor performance venue located on a tree-lined hilltop in the Berkshires.

Tanglewood’s 86th season kicks off June 20 with John Fogerty and continues through Aug. 31 with DISPATCH and the Boston Pops . In between, Tanglewood will host more than 140 events, including its signature classical music concerts each weekend featuring three different programs performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, most weekends from July 5 to Aug. 25.

A lot of work goes into putting together all of those performances at Tanglewood. In fact, the Boston Symphony Orchestra is already busy planning next summer’s Tanglewood season, according to Tony Fogg, the head of artistic planning for the BSO.

“We’re typically we’re planning a couple of years in advance,” Fogg said during a recent interview. “We’re well underway with the season plans for 2025, and a few things in place for the 26 season as well. So it’s roughly a two-year cycle of putting all of the programming together.”

“The big projects for each season are put in place first,” Fogg added. “And then little by little, it’s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle by hand, the various other pieces fall into place.”

But all that hard work is worth it since Tanglewood holds such a special place in so many people’s hearts.

Listening to a concert on the lawn or in The Shed or one of the other venues at Tanglewood can be a relaxing, magical experience. You can also feel the sense of history at this place which has hosted performances since 1937.

“It’s an amazing experience,” Fogg said. “The thing about Tanglewood in particular it’s the combination not only of the great music, but of this amazing landscape, and the sheer beauty of the Tanglewood property is an experience unto itself.”

“There is a real spiritual quality about Tanglewood,” Fogg added. “It’s the sense of calm, the great music that’s there... performed at the highest level. They’re the qualities that make it unique, and everyone has their own individual things that they are passionate about with regard to Tanglewood.”

Fogg, BSO music director Andris Nelsons and many other people work hard to strike just the right balance of different concerts throughout the season, especially when it comes to the classical music season at Tanglewood.

“It’s getting that balance across the season, making sure that we have a good mixture of those sort of headline artists who everyone knows and loves – your Yo-Yo Mas (Aug. 18 at Tanglewood) and Joshua Bells (July 31 and Aug. 4) and so on – as well as some new names to show them the next generation of great performer coming through.”

Some of the other best-loved classical musicians performing this summer at Tanglewood include violinist Hilary Hahn (who performs during the Opening Night BSO concert on July 5), pianist Yuja Wang (July 13 and July 17), pianist Emanuel Ax (July 21) and a chamber music concert featuring two of the greatest classical musicians – violinist Leonidas Kavakos and pianist Daniil Trifonov on Aug. 21.

Opera fans will be treated to performances by soprano Renee Fleming in an all-Strauss program on July 7 and Act III of Wagner’s final, monumental Ring Cycle opera “Gotterdammerung” on July 20.

And for those of you who enjoy classical music and dance, the Boston Ballet and the BSO will perform together on July 12.

In addition, this summer’s classical music season will pay tribute to Serge Koussevitzky, the BSO music director born 150 years ago who helped create Tanglewood.

Koussevitsky also created the Tanglewood Music Center, the official name for the summer music school at Tanglewood. Each summer, some of the world’s best young classical musicians attend the intensive music academy and regularly perform concerts throughout the summer at Tanglewood.

But perhaps the most popular classical music concerts of the summer will take place Aug. 2 and 3. That’s when Tanglewood will host John Williams’ Film Night , featuring the 92-year-old composer himself.

In years past, this annual event featuring the memorable music of John Williams (from movies like “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter,” “Jaws” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark”) was held once each summer. But last year’s film night concert was so popular – and created so much traffic on local roads – the BSO decided to present film night two nights in a row this summer.

A separate event based on film music, “Jurassic Park in Concert” will be held on Aug. 17, performed against the backdrop of “visual stunning imagery and groundbreaking special effects,” according to the BSO’s website.

And no summer at Tanglewood would be complete without its final classical music concert featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on Aug. 25.

But it’s not all about classical music. Tanglewood also has a long history of presenting many rock performers – from Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell and The Who in the 1960s to Santana, Ray Charles and Sly and the Family Stone in the 1970s – and this summer is no exception.

Following John Fogerty on June 20, Tanglewood will host a wide range of popular performers, including:

  • The Who’s lead singer Roger Daltrey (June 22)
  • Kool & The Gang and En Vogue (June 23)
  • Boyz II Men (June 27)
  • Jon Batiste (June 28)
  • Trey Anastasio with the Boston Pops (June 29)
  • Brandi Carlile (June 30)
  • Jason Mraz with the Boston Pops (July 2)
  • The Pretenders (July 16)
  • Beck with the Boston Pops (July 23)
  • Judy Collins, Rufus Wainwright and The Indigo Girls (Aug. 30)
  • DISPATCH with the Boston Pops (Aug. 31)

However, no summer at Tanglewood would be complete without an annual performance by James Taylor and his All-Star Band , which return on July 3 and July 4.

“We have a very robust set of offerings in the popular artist series,” Fogg said. “This is more than we typically have.”

“There’s something for everyone this summer,” Fogg added, “and I think that’s the great appeal of the 2024 season.”

Tanglewood is located at 297 West Street in Lenox. For more information about the complete Tanglewood summer season schedule or to order tickets, visit www.bso.org/tanglewood or call (888) 266-1200.

How Leo Skepi Promises to Unlock Your Core Confidence

By Kate Lindsay

Image may contain Accessories Jewelry Necklace Face Head Person Photography Portrait Adult Body Part and Finger

Leo Skepi is not a therapist, and he wouldn’t describe himself as a self-help guru, either. Instead, the 26-year-old creator thinks of himself as the realest person in your group chat—the one who cuts through everyone else’s platitudes to say that you might just be full of shit.

Skepi has “an unorthodox take on all things self-development,” as he puts it, mixed “with a little bit of entertainment.”

When Skepi started on TikTok in 2021, he was not planning to become an inspirational speaker. He was just sharing his thoughts on life and found an audience that he resonated with. Not long after, he launched the podcast Aware and Aggravated . Altogether, he has over 4 million followers.

“Being insecure is actually hurtful to other people,” he advises in a typical video . “You’re not going to feel better by withholding love.”

“In Leo we trust!!!” replied one commenter, using the slogan that also provides the name of Skepi’s summer tour. In Leo We Trust , which Skepi describes as a live, interactive version of his podcast, kicked off on May 4 in Massachusetts, and has the creator making 19 other stops throughout the US this summer. (He's appearing at The Fonda in Los Angeles on Friday, May 17 .)

“You're getting the ultimate version of me and the ultimate guide for confidence from my eyes,” he tells GQ over Zoom—and in return, he says, audience members are giving him “the most heartfelt and transformative” hugs. Here, Skepi explains what he most wants to teach his followers and how he handles learning (and sometimes, stumbling) in public.

Leo Skepi : I'm 26, I'm Albanian, and I'm gay. And that brings up a plethora of different ideas and contradictions shooting around. But the way it got started was my background being Albanian, being gay, going through the upbringing that I have—which was eventful to say the least—I realized I have a very specific approach to life, and a personality that is not typical. There's a lot of duality in my personality and a lot of contrast. I just started making TikToks for fun, and then I quickly started getting a lot of traction and questions and people liking my personality and wondering how I had such a carefree approach and a sense of self-acceptance and competence that they hadn't seen before, especially in someone who's gay and young. It wasn't typical, from their perspective, to see someone like me show up.

I stopped and thought about the power of a following and what could come from it. And people started asking a lot of questions. And self-development is something that's been a big component of my life. A lot of my personality is not by accident—a lot of the things I know are not by accident or just from one resource, like a book or a podcast or a leader or an idol or something like that. I've had to do a lot of work on myself and nothing is an accident with how I am and how I present in the world. So I figured it was a really good opportunity, since everyone pointed out what I wasn't seeing about myself.

I'm a registered nurse and I was a nurse for a few years. Aside from health care experience, there is a big section of nursing that is around psychology and mental health. I have a lot of infield experience with people suffering from many different mental disorders, from minute things to full schizophrenia where it debilitates your entire ability to live and you have to be confined to a facility.

Personally, I had my own self-acceptance and growth journey because I dealt with a lot of bullying growing up and a lot of things from my culture influenced my personality in a way. I started reading self-help books and I read over a hundred by the time I was 20 and I appreciated a lot of the advice. I went to therapy when I was 19 to help with my sexuality. Never thought I would come out, which is insane. I didn't come out until 21. But I have a lot of personal experience with this field. Specific things I've learned have come from my own insight and reflection and introspection that I've done.

I'd say edutainment. I use my personality that everybody likes to deliver the information, and I talk about a lot of deep and heavy topics with a little bit of lightheartedness and sense of humor. I know how to navigate that dance of what's delicate and what can be laughed at.

That's one thing that is very hard to pin down, 'cause I don't really talk to a specific type of person. I speak to every person individually because the thing I talk about the most is emotions, perspectives, and feelings. And everybody has them. So whoever it hits is whoever it hits. And that's one thing I love about going to see everyone in person on my tour is the melting pot of ages, sexes, races. Every walk of life comes in the door and I love it.

That's one thing that's nuts—seeing the impact. Because I have a weird thing in my brain with social media. I look at it kind of like a video game. It's easy to track numbers and be like, Okay, cool, this amount of people watch this. But I forget that it's people. So when I get to see people in person, it changes the whole thing. I see who I'm speaking to. And it's softened my approach and helped me get better at what I do because when I'm talking to a camera in my apartment, it's easy to be a little bit more insensitive than you would if there's someone across from you. But I think the biggest thing with recognizing impact is the way that people hug me at my live show. This sounds insane, but the way people hug me is like, you can tell I've helped them. And a lot of them say that I've saved their life and the way that they hug me, I feel it. And it makes me so happy and it makes me so grounded. And this is real. This is not a video game.

I would say the DMs that I started getting from people, and when people started to recognize me in person and come up to me in day-to-day life. The reactions people would have, they would be so overwhelmed with the emotion. A lot of people would cry. Like I said, the hugs people give me are insane.

Accountability, discipline—encouragement is a big one. Making people recognize the power in themselves and helping them spot the control they do have, when you do feel powerless. I've struggled with that and I know how impactful that can be. It's just to crack one perspective and show someone a tool that they have or a skill that they already have in them and they can use it to change something they're unhappy with. And I'd say growth. That's the biggest one. It's not fun. It's uncomfortable. Having a community built now and being able to have my journey be online and showing the growth and growing in front of everyone's eyes is not fun.

I went into social media very authentic, vulnerable, and honest. And I've kept that approach, but I've learned through time to set up boundaries with what you will and won't share, what you should or shouldn't share. And also boundaries around a certain topic that I'm still emotionally charged by, because you do not make good content and you do not articulate things correctly. I've learned from a lot of mistakes.

My biggest approach to this is not betraying myself. I'm very authentic. I'm very myself and I'm very honest and it's a big, big challenge to not be swayed by backlash and hate. I never want to be insincere when I say something. So I do not let myself speak on something until I've actually shifted my perspective. And I feel like it is the truth. I'm never gonna get online just to appease people. A lot of people get mad at me for the timing and when I talk about things, but I'm making sure I'm at a point where I fully understand it, feel differently about it, and can speak eloquently about that instead of just rushing a response that seems insincere or goes against myself and then I'm lying online, which I don't wanna do.

Everything kind of boils back down to the point of somehow feeling defective or not enough. Relationship content that I make does extremely well because people are trying to understand why they were not enough for someone or why they were treated the way that they were and they think it's something about them. Same thing with eating, diet, exercise—all of that comes down to trying to get away from that feeling of not being enough.

Oh, all the time. Putting yourself online puts you in a hot seat and opens you up to so much more information because you're being looked at from so many different perspectives. A lot of people can identify things that you might not be seeing. So I'm very, very open to learning from my audience. I learn from them all the time and I encourage everyone in my comments with every podcast that I do to leave information they might know or a different perspective they may have. And if you have something else to share, share it. I'm very open to learning. I've had to recently change my relationship to criticism, but now I've learned a way to even learn from that.

My whole tour is around the topic of confidence. You're getting the ultimate version of me and the ultimate guide for confidence from my eyes. You get reconnected with who you are at the core and confidence coming from that, but also clearing up all the things that are preventing you from already being confident. I'm basically gonna remind you who you are at the core and that confidence is already there, uncover everything that's blocking you from it. I'm gonna rip it off. And then we just let it shine through the tactics that I share. The way that you maneuver life is gonna be completely different. I always say at the beginning of the shows: Prepare to say goodbye to who you were when you walked in, because it's gonna be a whole new version coming out.

But there's also a big community aspect to my shows, because they're all people who relate to what I say. People have gone to my show alone and left posting photos with six or seven people at dinner. Like, “Oh my God, I made all these friends.” So it's a very transformative event to go to, but it's also great for people who are looking for friends and looking for community.
