Good News for Weary Travelers: Online Passport Renewal Is Coming Your Way
The shift will eliminate the need for piles of paperwork and hours waiting in lines. But it will still take some time to actually get your hands on your passport.
By Debra Kamin
Following the success of a limited pilot program for online passport renewal this summer, the U.S. State Department says it plans to fully launch an online passport renewal option for the general public in early 2023.
The shift, which for many will eliminate the need for piles of paperwork and hours spent waiting in line at passport offices, is meant to offer relief after the pandemic created two years of extensive delays and backlogs for passport seekers.
The online renewal option was created following a December 2021 executive order from President Joe Biden, who demanded the federal government “design and deliver services in a manner that people of all abilities can navigate.”
An initial pilot program was launched in February for federal government employees and contractors. After that closed, a second program opened Aug. 2 for 25,000 members of the public; it closed to applicants on Aug. 12. State Department officials say they plan to initiate a third pilot program for a limited number of applicants later in September, and while they don’t yet have a specific date for launching the system for all Americans, they say they intend to do so by early 2023.
The majority of U.S. passports can currently be renewed by mail, but the process requires applicants to print and manually fill out multiple documents, and then send them in along with printed photographs (which must meet sizing and resolution standards ) and a check or money order to cover fees.
For some people — applicants under the age of 16, for example, or those applying for a first-time passport — neither the mail nor online is an option. The same goes for those renewing a document that was lost or stolen, or updating an expired passport that was issued more than 15 years ago. In those cases, applicants must appear in person at a passport acceptance facility like a U.S. Post Office.
For time-crunched applicants who need their documents in six weeks or less, the options are even more limited. Last-minute passports can only be obtained after an appointment at one of the State Department’s 26 official passport centers and passport agencies , where passports can be renewed in person and obtained the same day for a $60 expediting fee.
How bad are current wait times?
Since 2020, shuttered passport offices and personnel cuts at the State Department have bogged down the system, with wait times for passport renewals stretching as long as 18 weeks. A slashed number of in-person appointments makes options for emergency or last-minute travel documents elusive . Some travelers have flown across the country in order to have their passports renewed in person ; Americans abroad have reported paying shady brokers in order to get an in-person slot at a consulate to update their passports or register the birth of a child.
Wait times for those needing updated documents have improved since early in the pandemic, but continue to lag: Routine passport service, which once took as little as six weeks, is currently estimated to take between seven and 10 weeks. Expedited service, which costs an additional $60, and, before the pandemic, would have taken up to three weeks, is now estimated to take between four and six weeks.
Will I get my passport quicker by using the online option?
Currently, processing times for online renewal remain the same as those sent via snail mail. But while there’s no guarantee that online renewal will shorten wait times, it will cut down on paperwork and streamline the process, both for applicants and State Department officials, who continue to work their way through a backlog of nearly two million passport applicants that started piling up in early 2020.
On its website, the State Department urges applicants not to renew online if they are traveling internationally in six weeks or less, as their current passport will become invalid as soon as they submit their renewal application.
How does the online process work?
To join the pilot program for online passport renewal, applicants must create an account at MyTravelGov , a process that requires a valid email address. Once logged in, the page will eventually contain a link to the online passport renewal system, which will require entering your passport number and uploading a digital photo. Currently, with the pilot program closed, there is no such link, and a link that read “how to renew your passport” takes you to a form with information for renewing by mail.
And the technology of the system itself, some travel advisers say, leaves room for improvement.
“The system is designed to take the nightmare part of passport renewal out of it and have people be able to do it from the comfort of their homes. It will be the future. But as it’s designed right now, it’s a little bit clunky,” said Anthony Berklich, a travel adviser and founder of the travel platform Inspired Citizen .
There are multiple steps, and applicants must create a password, then enter a separate passcode sent via email, which can be confusing. And after going through all the steps, some applicants, Mr. Berklich added, received error messages telling them they were ineligible for online renewal despite meeting all the requirements.
How do I know if I can renew online?
To qualify for online renewal, you must currently have a passport that is or was valid for 10 years, and it’s OK if your passport has expired. But you can’t renew documents online that are too new or too old, so if you have more than one year left on your passport (meaning it was issued after 2013), you can’t renew online. Same goes for expired passports that were issued more than 15 years ago, in 2007 or earlier.
You must also be at least 25 years old, and must not be changing your name or gender on the document. And you must be able to upload a digital photo and pay fees using a credit or debit card or ACH payment, and live in the United States. Lost or damaged passports also cannot be renewed online.
How much does it cost to renew online?
Passport renewal fees are the same whether you renew online or via traditional methods: $130 for an adult and $135 for a minor. An additional $60 fee for expedited service also remains the same.

Passport wait times are down: Here's what to know about getting a US passport
As you run down your pre-travel checklist, there is one item you may need that requires some planning: a passport.
Though some destinations do not require U.S. travelers to have a passport, most of the time you'll need one for international travel. Wait times are down from the levels seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travelers could expect to wait about four months for routine service, but travelers still need to think ahead if they want to avoid any disruptions to their plans.
"The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically reduced the Department’s capacity to issue passports," a U.S. State Department official told USA TODAY in an email. "However, we made great strides over the last year to lower passport processing times and are currently meeting our service standards, which almost match pre-pandemic norms."
Here's what travelers need to know about getting a U.S. passport.
How long does it take to get a US passport?
Travelers can expect to wait six to nine weeks for routine service and three to five weeks for expedited service, according to the State Department . Those processing times do not include mailing times, which may vary across the U.S. Travelers might also have to wait as long as two weeks from the day they apply for their application to be "In Process."

How much is a US passport?
That depends. Travelers 16 and older applying for a passport for the first time must pay both an application fee and an acceptance fee, according to the State Department . Application fees run $130 for a passport book, $30 for a passport card and $160 for both. The acceptance fee is $35 for each option.

Where can I travel without a passport?: Check out these 6 destinations
Those 16 and up who are renewing their passports have to pay the same application fees but do not have to pay an acceptance fee. For children under 16, application fees run $100 for a passport book, $15 for a passport card and $115 for both, with a $35 acceptance fee for each option.
For the procrastinators out there, travelers can pay a $60 fee to expedite their passports. They can opt to pay an additional $18.32 for one- to two-day delivery, though that option is not available to applicants for passport cards alone.
The State Department offers a fee calculator on its website, which can help travelers determine how much they will pay.
Where do I go to get a passport?
For routine and expedited service, travelers can apply at an acceptance facility or renew by mail (some must apply in person , including those who have never had a U.S. passport and children under 16). Those with urgent – but non-emergency – international travel plans within 14 calendar days can call 1-877-487-2778 to make an appointment, though some restrictions apply, according to the State Department .
Travelers also can make an appointment if they "have a life-or-death emergency that requires international travel within 72 hours (3 business days)." Qualifying travelers also can renew their passports online . "Full availability to the public for online passport renewal is targeted for later in 2023," the State Department says.

Planning a cruise? Here are the documents and costs to keep in mind
Applicants can find the forms and photo requirements on the State Department's website .
Do you need a passport for a cruise?
Not always. U.S. citizens booked on closed-loop cruises, which start and end at the same U.S. port, can enter the country with a government-issued photo ID and birth certificate instead, but the State Department encourages having a passport "in case of an emergency, such as an unexpected medical air evacuation or the ship docking at an alternate port," according to its website . Cruise lines might also require it.

One of the most confusing parts of applying for a new passport or a passport renewal is figuring out how much you need to pay.
If you are in a rush, a passport expediting service can help simplify this process, but if you choose to apply on your own, this guide will help.
The total cost of your passport fees will depend on several factors, including:
- the passport type
- the passport services you require
- additional services you might need or want to add on
Note: If you don't pay the correct fees, your passport application will be delayed or denied.

Understanding Passport Fees
Navigating the costs associated with obtaining a passport can be complex. Below, we break down the fees into clear categories: mandatory fees, optional fees, no-cost services, and additional expenses.
Mandatory Fees
- Application Fee: A required fee for most passport applications that will vary depending on the type of application you are submitting
- Acceptance Fee: An additional fee for first-time applicants or those reapplying after a lost or stolen passport, payable at passport acceptance facilities
Optional Fees
- Expedited Processing: For an additional fee (currently $60), you can opt for faster processing of your passport application.
- 1-to-2-Day Delivery: Opt for expedited shipping of your passport with Priority Mail Express for an additional fee (currently $19.53).
- File Search Fee: If your citizenship documents are missing, you can request a file search for an additional fee.
No-Cost Services
- Correction of Printing Errors: If your passport has a printing error, the correction is made free of charge.
Additional Expenses
While the direct fees are a significant part of the passport cost, additional expenses can add up:
- Passport Photos: Costs associated with obtaining passport-standard photographs will vary depending on where you get your passport photos taken .
- Supporting Documents: Fees for procuring necessary documents, like a birth certificate.
- Submission Costs: Expenses related to sending your application to the appropriate agency or center, including postage or travel costs.
While the State Department's fee calculator offers a helpful starting point, it might not reflect the full extent of your costs .
To help ease the complexity of planning for international travel, we've compiled the most up-to-date costs into our 2024 Passport Fee charts below. These charts are designed to help you accurately calculate the total cost of obtaining your passport, ensuring no hidden fees catch you by surprise.
What Does a Passport Cost?
Carefully read the information below to be sure that your payment is correct. Know that submitting incorrect passport fees or form of payment will delay the processing of your application.
Note: Form DS-11 is used to apply for a new passport or to replace a lost, stolen or damaged one. All applicants submitting this form must apply in person at an Acceptance Facility (which include most post offices), Regional Passport Agency or, if currently outside the United States, at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate General.
Applicants who need new passports expedited quickly but are unable to personally visit the regional agency should apply through a passport expediting service.

Why Your Passport May Cost More
Please note that the actual total cost of getting a passport is more than the sum of the fees paid to the U.S. government. There are additional expenses that are not listed below such as postage, the price of a passport photo, and a protective envelope to send the application form. These are just a few of the extra costs you should expect when applying for a new travel document.
If you need a passport faster than the 6 to 8 weeks it takes for routine service, you can add the expedited service fee to the total payment. This will reduce your wait to 2 to 3 weeks
We recommend you also add the cost of 1 to 2 days delivery when sending the application by mail. This is not required if you submit the form at a regional agency , however, you will need to provide proof of imminent/urgent international travel to use this option. Note that this is not an option for passport cards. Passport cards are shipped via First Class Mail only.
If the 2 to 3 weeks turnaround offered through typical expedited service is not fast enough or you are unable to visit a processing center, you should apply online for expedited service through a registered courier service . By doing so, you could get your passport as quickly as the same day you apply.

Say you've booked the perfect international getaway just to find that your passport has expired. Or, perhaps you didn't realize that your travel destination requires that your passport have at least six months of validity. Whatever your case may be, Americans have a few options for getting an expedited passport — whether you're renewing it or applying for a new one.
Here's what you need to know about your options for getting a passport on short notice.

How long does it take to get an expedited passport?
U.S. passport processing times vary depending on the current demand for new passports and passport renewals. The currently posted timelines for routine and expedited processing are as follows:
Routine processing: Six to eight weeks.
Expedited processing: Two to three weeks.
Keep in mind that these are just the processing time once your passport application is received. Make sure to factor in that it can take up to two weeks for the State Department to receive your mailed application and up to another two weeks for you to receive your completed passport. You can shorten this mailing time by sending your application by express mail and paying for faster return shipping.
It's worth noting that current passport processing times are far higher than in the past. For reference, in December 2019, routine passport requests only took six to eight weeks. Expediting your passport application slashed that processing time to just two to three weeks — or just eight days if you renewed at a passport agency.
While we wait for processing times to return to those levels, here are your options for expediting your U.S. passport application.

How to expedite a U.S. passport application
The best option to expedite your passport application will depend on how quickly you need your passport. The U.S. Department of State currently offers three types of expedited passport application options: Expedited, Urgent Travel, and Emergency.
Here's a breakdown of each option and how to take advantage of each one.
Expedited passport applications
Submit an expedited passport application request if you're traveling in a few months and the current up-to-11-week standard processing time would cut it too close. The process is otherwise identical to a routine application, simply requiring an additional $60 fee on top of standard passport fees.
New passport applicants can submit an expedited application at a passport acceptance facility. Travelers renewing a passport can submit an expedited renewal application by mail.
Note that the State Department has a money-back guarantee on expedited requests. You can apply for a refund of your $60 expedited fee if the agency doesn't process your application within:
35 business days (excluding weekends and holidays) of receiving an application submitted on Oct. 2, 2023 or later.
45 business days (excluding weekends and holidays) of receiving an application submitted on or before Oct. 1, 2023.
Remember to factor in mailing times when figuring whether or not an expedited application will get you your passport in time to travel. If you want to shorten the overall processing time, send your application to the State Department by express mail. You can also include an extra $19.53 with your application fees for expedited 1-2 day return shipping of your completed passport.

Urgent travel passport appointments
If an expedited passport application isn't fast enough, you'll need to apply for an in-person appointment at a passport agency. You can only schedule an urgent travel application if you haven't yet applied for a passport and you have international travel booked within 14 days.
You can also get an urgent travel appointment if you've applied for a passport but still haven't received it and your travel date is quickly approaching. In this case, you can only schedule an appointment within five calendar days of your international departure date.
To determine your eligibility, you must provide your travel dates and destinations when calling for an urgent travel appointment. Then, bring printed proof of your international travel to your passport appointment. If you don't provide proof of travel, the passport agency may not honor your appointment request.
The State Department operates around two dozen passport agencies across the U.S. If you don't live in a city with a passport agency, you'll need to travel to one of these locations to submit your urgent travel passport application request.
In addition to potential travel costs, you'll need to pay an additional $60 expedited fee to the passport agency at the time of your appointment.
If you qualify for an urgent travel appointment, call 1-877-487-2778 to see what appointments are available. We recommend calling for an appointment as soon as you're possibly eligible — 14 days before departure if you haven't applied yet or five days out if you've already applied — as spots are extremely limited.

Emergency passport appointments
The U.S. State Department clearly realizes that some situations require special treatment. You can apply for a so-called "life-or-death emergency" appointment at a passport agency if you need to travel internationally within three business days because an immediate family located outside the United States has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening illness or injury.
For the sake of this appointment type, the State Department considers an immediate family member as a:
Parent or legal guardian.
Grandparent.
Travel to visit other family members (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) in these situations or to travel to get medical services for yourself do not qualify for life-or-death emergency passport service.
To get a life-or-death passport appointment, call 1-877-487-2778 between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time from Monday to Friday. Outside of these hours and on weekends and federal holidays, call 202-647-4000 instead.

If you need to expedite a U.S. passport…
Options for expediting a passport range from paying $60 more for an expedited application to applying in person at a passport agency in urgent situations.
If you're traveling in the next few months, don't count on getting your passport anytime soon. Routine passport processing takes weeks — and that doesn't include mailing times. Instead, apply as soon as possible and pay for expedited service.
To get your passport back quicker, pay extra for expedited shipping to and from the agency. Then, if you don't receive your passport as your travel date nears, make an appointment at a passport agency within five days of travel to make sure you have a passport in time to travel.

How To Renew Your Passport Online: A Step-By-Step Guide
A passport is an important document that proves who you are and which country you belong to. It helps you travel for different reasons like holidays, work, or studying. Making sure your passport is up to date is really important if you want your travel to go smoothly. If you are from India, your passport is valid for ten years from when it was issued. After that, you need to renew it. You can start renewing it up to three years after it expires or up to one year before. It is best to start the renewal process about nine months before it expires to avoid any problems, but you can still renew it within six months. However, this might cause delays and affect your travel plans.
If you are under 18, your passport is valid for five years or until you turn 18, whichever comes first. After that, you can renew your passport online. If you are between 15 and 18, you can choose to get a passport that is valid for 10 years.
How to renew your passport online: Here is a step-by-step guide on how to renew your passport online:

Surge in passport demand causing lengthy delays, jeopardizing summer travel plans for many
By Kris Van Cleave , Analisa Novak
May 18, 2023 / 7:54 AM EDT / CBS News
Summer travelers planning to venture abroad are facing a new challenge: delays in obtaining passports. An unprecedented surge in demand for travel documents has created a growing backlog, causing significant delays for those hoping to embark on international trips .
The standard passport renewal process, which typically takes a few weeks, can now take up to 13 weeks, while even expedited service could take up to nine weeks.
The prolonged waiting times are generating travel anxiety for many.
Kylie Parker, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina, applied for a new, expedited passport several months ago, confident she had ample time before her summer study abroad program. But with her departure for Portugal and Italy now just days away, her passport has yet to arrive, jeopardizing her plans.
"I spent eight hours on the phone with the passport office," she said. "No calls though, no calls back. No contact with anyone. I'm very scared of missing my travel abroad trip."
After finally reaching someone, Parker was informed that the only available in-person appointments were on the same day in New Hampshire or the following morning in Minneapolis, which would require an overnight flight costing $1,200. Alternatively, she said she was told she could schedule an appointment in Seattle, Washington, on the day she is scheduled to depart for Europe.
Caleb Monticalvo, a frustrated applicant from San Francisco, was told to seek other locations.
"They said the only other option was to go to another location, which is in L.A. I'm not going to go to L.A.," he said.
Last year, the State Department issued nearly 22 million passports, a record high. Demand for passports has surged by at least 30% this year, as 500,000 applications come in weekly.
Despite increased funding and more staff, the backlog has persisted and wait times continue to grow. That has prompted passport offices across the country to see long lines as travelers rush to secure their travel documents before an anticipated record-breaking summer travel season.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in March that he recognizes the problem and has implemented a task force to coordinate efforts focused on resolving the issue.
"We're offering overtime, opening satellite offices to help HQ in processing times," Blinken said.
Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst, said the delays are not only "alarming," but also "embarrassing."
"I know people have been waiting three, four months to get their passports fulfilled," he said.
Travelers should be aware that even passports expiring in 2024 could pose a problem, as many countries require the document to be valid for up to six months beyond the arrival date.

REAL ID deadline moving closer. 14 things you need to know to get your Florida license
You're running out of time.
The deadline to have a REAL ID is now less than a year away.
Originally set for October 2021, the deadline for U.S. residents to have a REAL ID has been extended at least twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beginning in May 2025, anyone 18 and older who plans to take a domestic flight will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification at airport security checkpoints.
Here's what you need to know about REAL IDs.
What is a REAL ID?
After the 9/11 Commission recommended the federal government set standards for identification, Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005.
The act established minimum security standards for getting a license anywhere across the country and prohibited some federal agencies from accepting anything less.
"The act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards," according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The purposes are:
- Accessing certain federal facilities
- Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft
- Entering nuclear power plants
The Real ID Act became effective nationwide on May 11, 2008. Florida began issuing REAL ID-compliant credentials after Jan. 4, 2010.
Why do you need a REAL ID?
Without a REAL ID, you will not be permitted to pass through a TSA checkpoint after May 7, 2025.
REAL ID-compliant credentials already are required to enter checkpoints at federal facilities, military facilities and nuclear power plants.
What's the deadline to get a REAL ID?
The federal government is expected to start enforcing REAL ID on May 7, 2025. At that time, people will need either a Real ID or passport to fly domestically and enter certain federal facilities.
So if you're an adult and plan to fly commercially, you'll need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license.
Is there an alternative to a REAL ID?
Sort of. If you don't have a REAL ID, you'll need:
- A REAL ID-compliant identification.
- A valid passport or passport card.
Countdown clock to deadline for a REAL ID
Where do you go to get a real id in florida.
Real IDs in Florida will be issued to first-time and renewing customers at a local driver's license service center or tax collector officer.
You must visit an office in person to get a REAL ID the first time, according to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Since January 2020, those without a REAL ID license have not been able to renew their licenses online through the MyDMV Portal.
If your card is not REAL ID compliant and you aren't up for renewal before May 7, 2025, make an appointment to get a new card. Locations can be found here .
A Class E license can be renewed up to 18 months prior to the card’s expiration date.
How do you know if you already have a REAL ID?
In Florida, a REAL ID is marked with a gold circle with a white star in the top right corner of your driver's license or state identification card. If the star is there, it's REAL ID compliant.
If you've received a new or renewed Florida driver's license or ID since January 2010, you should be good to go.
How much does a REAL ID cost in Florida?
The fee for an initial Florida Class E license (including learner’s permit) is $48 and a commercial driver's license (Class A) license is $75.
The fee for a state ID card is $25.
Most local tax collector offices also charge a $6.25 service fee.
Here's what you need to bring with you to get a REAL ID in Florida
You’ll need to bring one of the primary documents listed below to prove your identity, legal residence and date of birth:
For U.S. citizens:
- Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
- Original or certified copy of a birth certificate
- Consular report of birth abroad
- Certificate of naturalization issued by DHS
- Certificate of citizenship
- Court-ordered name change document
- Marriage certificate, issued by the courts, and/or
- Divorce decree, issued by the courts
In all cases, the document must show a clear trail of name changes originating with the birth name to the current name.
For non-citizens:
- Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card – I-551 for Lawful Permanent Residents
- Valid passport for non-immigrants except for asylum applicants and refugees
- Other government-issued document showing your full name
- Department of Homeland Security document showing proof of lawful presence
- If your name has changed by marriage/divorce, you must have your name changed on your Citizen and Immigration Services documents.
Both citizens and non-citizens will need to bring:
- Your Social Security Card or proof of your social security number. You can find a list of documents that provide proof of your social security number on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle's What to Bring page .
- Two documents that show your principle residence
How long does it take to get a REAL ID in Florida?
Once your identity and legal status have been verified, a driver's license or ID card will be issued within 60 days and mailed to the address on the driver record.
The driver's license or ID card will be issued for the period of time specified on the USCIS document, up to a maximum of four years.
Is REAL ID mandatory in Florida?
Yes. Every state resident must have a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card — or valid passport — to board a commercial aircraft within the U.S.
Without a REAL ID — or acceptable alternative — travelers will not be permitted through the security checkpoint.
Will children need to have a REAL ID?
No. The TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. The companion will need acceptable identification, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Can you use a REAL ID to enter the Bahamas, Mexico or Canada, or another country?
No. REAL IDs cannot be used for border crossings or international travel. If you're traveling internationally, you still need a passport.
REAL IDs also can't be used for international sea cruise travel.
What is the gold star on my Florida driver's license?
If the star is there, it's Real ID compliant.
