About Mount Hutt

There’s a mountain that rises out of the Canterbury Plains that the locals are proud to call their own and that everyone else reveres. Voted New Zealand’s best Ski Resort at the World Ski Awards every year since 2015, Mt Hutt Ski Resort is high and it’s wide. Most days at the summit you can see from one side of the country to the other, from the jagged spine of the Southern Alps to the West, right across the patchwork of pastureland to the Pacific Ocean on the East. Mt Hutt Ski Resort is Canterbury’s own “big mountain” with runs to accommodate families on a fun day in the snow, as well as the variety it takes to entice even the hottest skiers and snowboarders. Mt Hutt attracts people from all over the world, yet you can still sense the local pride. This is Canterbury’s ski area.

Located high in the Southern Alps, Canterbury’s Mt Hutt is firmly linked to the pioneering tradition of the region’s high country. A vast mountain with 365 hectares of diverse terrain, Mt Hutt offers a challenging and exciting snow experience.

Mt Hutt’s lift and trail system, recently redeveloped, has made it a candidate for possibly one of the best lift and terrain mixes in the South Island. Mt. Hutt has also seen the addition of more snowmaking, base building development and a new mini terrain park for beginners and novices.

Mt Hutt offers all levels of skier and rider an awesome winter experience. Trails, off-piste, terrain parks and halfpipe are accessed by a six seater express chairlift, an express quad chair, a triple chair and a 140m long surface conveyor lift. Each winter, there is the opportunity to watch the many of the world’s best ski racers who come down under for training.

Mt Hutt is a 90-minute drive from Christchurch and 35-minutes from Methven. Ski shuttles offer daily services to and from Methven. Children aged 7 and under get a free day pass and there Skiwiland facility offers ski lessons for kids aged 3 years and up and day care for children aged three months to five years of age. Excellent facilities for learners make it a popular choice for beginners as well as intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders.

It also travels along ridge tops in certain areas which are exposed to wind gusts.

There's a mountain that rises out of the Canterbury Plains that the locals thought was so amazing they just had to ski it. It's high and it's wide and on a good day you can see right across the patchwork of pastureland below to the Pacific Ocean.

Yet you can still sense the local pride. This is Canterbury's ski area.

The summit 6 seat high-speed chairlift takes you to the highest point of any ski area in the South Island.  From feeling on top of the world, you can cruise down the legendary 'Broadway' or take on the chutes and steeps of "The Towers".
