Blue Mountains with Henry - Great day! Went on the AAT Kings Blue Mountains and Wildlife day tour today. Our guide Henry was excellent. Very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Commentary throughout the day was entertaining, personable and insightful. The coach and overall AAT Kings were impeccable and top notch. The tour was well placed and an overall awesome experience. The Blue Mountains are breathtaking. Featherdale Wildlife Reserve was lots of fun as we got to interact with and feed the animals. Recommend the tour and both the Scenic World Rides and Parramatta Cruise add-ons to roundout a must-dp tour.
Just did a Blue Mountain tour with AAT Kings. Opted for the “in style”. Well worth the difference in price. Small group, great lunch and a boat cruise at the end of the tour. Guide Joe was outstanding and very informative.
Blue Mountains Driver/Guide made my day fun! I was so lucky to have Ben as Driver/Guide for my final tour with AAT Kings! He made the trip to the Blue Mountains, out of Sydney, worthwhile. As a person with a disability, I also greatly appreciated Ben's kindness and patience. AAT Kings is very fortunate to have an employee like Ben and I'm grateful to have had him as a guide for my last Australian tour!

Let’s start with the basics!

You might have noticed that most itineraries of Sydney mention a visit to the Blue Mountains. Is it by far the most popular day tour from Sydney, for locals and tourists alike. So, what then makes it so popular?

Well, to start:

  • The Blue Mountains is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – it joined the register in 2000
  • There are ten national parks featuring waterfalls, sheer sandstone cliffs and vast regions of dense forest.
  • Pretty mountain villages, full of cute shops and excellent cafes, are dotted along the cliff tops.
  • The Blue Mountains is as encapsulating as, but a stark contrast to, Sydney’s iconic harbour and beaches and only a relatively short distance away.

The central town of the Mountains is Katoomba, which is approximately 120km west of the city. To reach the key sites, you will spend approximately 2 hours on the road from Sydney.

While it is possible to explore the mountains by public transport, it is not the best option for everyone. For some travellers, tours are the best choice.

  • Tours are perfect if you have not had time to research things to see and do in the Blue Mountains.
  • Tours are great if you only have limited time to see the region as you won’t waste time working out how to get from A to B.
  • Going on a tour is a good idea if you want to go hiking . If you are not experienced in hiking or bushwalking as we call it here, a tour can give you the confidence to take a walk in the forest and see more than you might if you go it alone.
  • Tour companies spend considerable time putting together itineraries that will meet visitors’ needs, whether you are a photographer or an adventure traveller. Their experience will mean you get to the right parts of the mountain for your needs.

If you love research as much as I do or travel on a budget, I have written a guide to help you have a fabulous day in the Blue Mountains using public transport . And another with three self-drive itineraries . You need to be a bit more organised if you choose these options.

You can find a tour to suit every type of traveller:

  • Tours with limited amounts of walking that to stop briefly at the key attractions to take photos
  • In-depth tours that provide detailed information on flora and fauna of the region
  • Hop on hop off tours with the option to choose to spend extra time in the places that interest you most
  • Tours for adventurers that including canyoning or abseiling
  • Tours that include a couple of hours hiking as part of the itinerary
  • Tours with an indigenous focus
  • Four wheel drive tours

These are the questions we commonly see in our Sydney Expert Facebook Group . If you have a question, we have not covered pop over to the group and ask us!

How long does the average Blue Mountains tour last?

Tours usually run for between 9-12 hours. Most tours leave the city by 8.30 am and return at about 6 pm, although there are exceptions!

What is the difference between the small group tours and the larger tour buses?

Tours operate on either full-size buses or minibuses (often 18-21 seats). Minibuses can get around the mountains more efficiently. Having smaller groups means less time to load everyone on and off the bus at each stop, so generally, these are my preference unless you need better seating for the long drive.

What stops are usually included in a Blue Mountains day tour?

While all tours are slightly different, the majority include the following stops.

  • Echo Point – home of the Three Sisters, the iconic Blue Mountains landmark
  • One or two Blue Mountains villages – either Katoomba or Leura are usually included in most day tours
  • Featherdale Wildlife Park – Many tours make their first stop at Featherdale on the way up to the mountains. About an hour west of Sydney, this relatively small animal park offers a chance to get up close and personal with a full range of native Aussie animals. I am a big fan of Featherdale, and it makes sense to visit it on the way if you have not had your fill of kangaroos and koalas. However, it cuts into your time in the mountains, so you need to be aware of that. The usual time spent here is about an hour.
  • Scenic World  is included in many tours.   Entry to the 3 “rides” here, the railway, skyway and the cableway is usually an optional extra although a small number include it in the cost. If your tour takes all three rides, then it can cut into your time exploring the bushland, as the queues here can be significant. Some tours stop here and allow you to choose one or all of the rides. Others include a bush walk at the base of Scenic World and the railway back to the top.
  • Some tours return to Sydney via Olympic Park and the transfer passengers to a ferry to cruise back to the city.

Ask yourself the following questions before you choose your tour.

Do you want to spend 1 hour at the wildlife park?

If you have already been to the zoo or seen Aussie animals in other places, then you might prefer a tour that does not spend an hour at Featherdale.

Do you want to spend time bushwalking in the mountains?

Lots of tours spend only 30-45 mins walking in the bush. Others offer a walking opportunity in a couple of places. Make sure you find the right fit for you.

Do you want meals included?

A sit-down lunch can eat into your time exploring, and depending on the tour, it can be pretty pedestrian and not a highlight of your day.

Do you need to book ahead?

If you are visiting in December or January, it is advisable to book your tour in advance as tours sell out. Week day tours are limited at present, so booking is the best way to be certain you will not miss out. Most tours offer a 24 hour cancellation period.

Should you add a Jenolan Caves visit into your day?

Short answer – no! If you only have one day, a Jenolan Caves tour, it will mean your time enjoying the Blue Mountains themselves will be very short. However, they are a great addition to a two-day itinerary.

Our favourite tours in the Blue Mountains are predominantly small group tours catering to between 6-24 guests. The smaller numbers on these tours allow you to get on and off more quickly. I believe tours on larger buses are not the best way to experience this area unless you do the HOHO bus and explore on foot in between stops.

They also offer a Boomerang Pass that is a single 90-minute loop, a great option for anyone not up to much walking or those who want an overview of the sites.

Great tips, sometimes it is more convenient to book a tour rather than self-explore and its always god to have recommended options!

Blue Mountains have been on our bucket list forever! We’d love to hike in the area, and it’s perfect for us because there are so many national parks: 10 in the same area? It’s fabulous! Thank you for the useful tips!

I have always wanted to go to the Blue Mountains and the worse thing is that I am Australian and not yet made it there. I never knew that there were so many Blue Mountains tours available but I suppose it a stunning place. You have some great trips there and I like that you have broken it down to things to consider especially in regards to visiting the zoo and bushwalking.

Wow, the Blue Mountains sound like an amazing place to visit. The day hike sounds perfect for us as we love to explore!

Thanks for all the handy tips on how to visit this area and what tours are available. Australia is on my list and I’d love to see this part of the country.

I would love to visit the Blue Mountains, but I doubt I would take a tour. Can you do this all on your own?

We’re taking one on the 26th! My in-laws booked it so I’m not sure which one it is, but I’m excited!

Love to hear how it goes!

The Blue Mountains.. heard a lot about them so it must really be worth doing the tour! Gosh they are gentle giants aren’t they… I can just imagine the photo’s that you could capture from above.

I remember our Blue Mountains tour guide vey well. though we went over a decade ago. He was quite an authority on Australia, not just the Blue Mountains. It was such a fantastic experience, all because of him.

Blue Mountains is indeed a treasure trove of experiences. I think your post is valuable in helping first-time visitors optimize their Blue Mountain experience. The sheer range of activities and experiences available there may be confusing and help of knowlegable sources is always welcome.

That is why some travellers who have not had time to plan or read about the area do find a tour works out best for them.

Imagine the images you could get with a drone! As much as I hate the noise they make it would be amazing.

Do you know of any Blue Mountain Tours that will pick up from a cruise ship docked @ White Bay Cruise Terminal? Most of the tours seem to pick up only from the hotels. There is one company called Shore Trips & Tours HQed in New Zealand that I found online. I would appreciate it if you replied to my email address.

Hi Sue As far as I know, there are no group tour operators who pick up at White Bay. You may be able to get a small group operator who will make pick up there if there are a few of you making a booking. It would be best to contact them directly. I am unaware of the company you mentioned.

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I’m inclined to meet one of the highly rated tour groups in the CBD – just need to check the Ferry Schedule to see how early they run.

Do you think it’s better to take a tour with Featherdale first thing in the morning, or a tour that has Featherdale in the afternoon? Obviously, if the tour has Featherdale in the morning, then Scenic World would be later (and possibly more crowded).

This is a hard one Vince – I prefer the return because I like to get to the mountains before the crowds. If you have seen Australian animals then I actually prefer tours that don’t stop there at all.

The Blue Mountains look like a lovely day trip from Sydney. Course now, I need to get to Australia first!

Hello. What tour would you recommend that gives you more time to walk around the bottom of scenic world where you get off the railway? Really enjoyed reading all your comments by the way, very helpful

You don’t really need a lot of time to walk the official boardwalk at Scenic World. If you want to walk outside Scenic World in the park then I would use the Blue Mountains Hop on hop off bus.

Very good read. Been to Australia last year specifically to Port Macquarie and I had the most wonderful time.

hello! this will be my first time and i love adventure and i want to spend the most time off the path seeing the animals in the wild. which tour would you suggest?

There is not a lot of chance of seeing significant numbers of animals in the wild on most of these group tours. You may see some kangaroos and birds etc but I would suggest one of this four wheel drive tour https://sydneyexpert.travelloapp.com/australia/sydney/blue-mountains-off-the-beaten-track-4wd-day-adventure

Alternatively of the group tours the sunset one would be my pick https://sydneyexpert.travelloapp.com/australia/sydney/blue-mountains-sunset-tour

Is there any day tour do not visit any animal park or zoo.

Return to Sydney

Sydney to Blue Mountains day trip

I recently took a Blue Mountains private tour from Sydney, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. This tour truly exceeded all my expectations, and I would give it a five-star rating without a doubt!

First and foremost, the breathtaking natural beauty of the Blue Mountains left me in awe. Our knowledgeable guide ensured we explored all the key attractions, from the iconic Three Sisters to the enchanting Wentworth Falls. The views were absolutely stunning, and I was able to capture some fantastic photos to remember the day.

The fact that this was a private tour made the experience all the more special. I appreciated the personalized attention and the flexibility to cater the tour to my interests and pace. Our guide was not only informative but also extremely friendly, making the entire trip enjoyable and engaging.

The itinerary was well-planned, and I got to experience the Blue Mountains in various ways, from bushwalks to a delightful lunch at a local restaurant. The balance between adventure and relaxation was perfect.

I also want to mention the comfortable transportation. The vehicle was clean, spacious, and our driver was punctual, ensuring we made the most of our day without any worries.

In summary, this private tour to the Blue Mountains was worth every penny. If you’re looking for a memorable and personalized experience in one of Australia’s most beautiful regions, I highly recommend this tour. I can’t wait to visit again, and I’ll definitely book with this company. Five stars all the way!

Blue Mountains Day Trip – How to Enjoy a Self-Guided Tour

Published Date:

Last Updated:

Share post:

While the state of New South Wales in South-East Australia is primarily renowned for the iconic city of Sydney (and other urban areas), there is another area which is equally spectacular yet frequently lies in the shadow of the urban counterpart. The Blue Mountains are a mountainous region in New South Wales that are the perfect location to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life in Sydney and enjoy an epic guided our self-guided experience. Whether you are an avid hiker or simply enjoy admiring breathtaking scenery, taking a Blue Mountains day trip from Sydney (or other nearby city) is undoubtedly an experience you won’t want to miss.

blue mountains new south wales

During our visit to Australia in 2019, we unfortunately faced the tragic bushfires that were ravaging through not only New South Wales but also many other areas of this beautiful country. For much of our trip, we were confined to experiences indoors, simply because the air quality was so poor that we didn’t want to risk being outside for long. We took a day trip from Sydney to Canberra to explore the Australian capital but in the back of our minds, we were so ready to head deep into the Blue Mountains to explore the inherent beauty of Australia’s natural landscape.

echo point blue mountains

Towards the end of our trip, we opted to head into the mountains and as you can see from the images below, many of our photos were hindered by the air quality but we still had an epic experience that makes us want to return to truly capture the beauty of the Blue Mountains. Researching the Blue Mountains will likely leave you with plenty of recommendations of “guided tours” and while this is certainly an option, we truly believe you can appreciate the beauty here on your own. Let’s take a look at why a day trip into the Blue Mountains will turn into an unforgettable experience!

blue mountains

Blue Mountains Day Trip from Sydney

In less than one hour, you can take the short drive from Sydney into the heart of the Blue Mountains. Whether you are following our self-guided itinerary with a rental car, or opting for an organized guided tour, you will quickly move from the urban surroundings to the spectacular mountainous region that overlooks the city of Sydney.

sydney to blue mountains map

The Blue Mountains region of New South Wales covers over 4,400 square miles, so even after you drive a hour, you are only at the start of this adventure…what you choose to explore after that is all down to personal preference.

Click here for directions using Google Maps from Sydney to the Blue Mountains.

Let’s take a look at some of the must-see attractions and places to visit while exploring the Blue Mountains. If you are only taking a day trip from Sydney, there are plenty of things to experience but you may also consider opting to stay overnight to enjoy a longer, relaxing experience away from city life.

Some of the highlight attractions and places to experience include the following, but as always, we always encourage you to allow spontaneity to take over as you never know what gem you may uncover as you begin your journey into exploring the heart of the Blue Mountains region of Australia.

Three Sisters

Scenic world, wentworth falls, prince henry cliff walk, the giant stairway.

Let’s start with the pièce de résistance in the Blue Mountains – the iconic Three Sisters rock formation that is one of the most infamous natural attractions, not only in this region of New South Wales, but also throughout Australia. This unusual, yet spectacular formation is located close to the town of Katoomba and has been transformed into perhaps the most popular tourist attraction in the Blue Mountains…and certainly, for very good reason! It was this attraction alone that inspired us to head deep into the Blue Mountains, despite the bushfires that were ravaging throughout the region during our visit to New South Wales.

three sisters blue mountains

Legend has it according to Aboriginal folklore is that these three rocks represent three sisters that were turned to stone, and each one stands beside the other at just under 1000 meters in height. The legend suggests that three sisters, ‘Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and ‘Gunnedoo’ lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe and fell in love with members of a competing tribe – as tribal law prohibited them marrying across tribes, a witchdoctor turned the three sisters into stone to prevent any harm coming to them.

three sisters trail

The inherent beauty of the Three Sisters is primarily because of the way sunlight creates unique, spectacular views across the Blue Mountains landscape. The collection of breathtaking colors can be seen throughout the day as the sun changes position and regardless of the viewpoint you choose to admire this natural attraction, this is a real sight to behold and one you won’t quickly forget.

three sisters blue mountains

The Echo Point Lookout is the most popular and spectacular overlook close to the town of Katoomba. Ample parking is available with a small fee, and it’s well worth taking the various trails to experience not only breathtaking views of this natural attraction but also of the panoramic Blue Mountains landscape.

echo point lookout blue mountains

For those of you that are a little more adventurous and want a close up look of the Three Sisters, take the Three Sisters walk that will lead you down a relatively steep staircase to the stone turrets. Cross the Honeymoon Bridge and you will step foot on the first of the three sisters.

Visitors to the Blue Mountains will likely want to experience the inherent beauty of this landscape and what better way to achieve this than by exploring Scenic World, a tourist attraction that offers both the steepest passenger railway in the world, an epic cablecar experience, a scenic walkway and much more. You could easily spend a full day experiencing all of the amazing attractions available at Scenic World but for those that want to experience as many of our recommendations as possible, you may be forgiven for just picking one of the following activities.

blue mountains day trip

Explore the beauty of the Blue Mountains by discovering the thrill of a 52-degree gradient in open terrain as you venture deep into the mountains onboard the train. Passengers have the ability to adjust their seats for the ultimate experience and the modern day railway was transformed to what visitors can see today in 2013. However, the history of this railway dates back much further to the late 19th century when the locals of Katoomba utilized this for coal mining.

blue mountains scenic world

For those that prefer to stay above the Blue Mountains Range, the Scenic Skyway is a great way to hop on a cablecar and experience breathtaking panoramic views overlooking New South Wales. Undoubtedly, this experience provides the best views of the Blue Mountains’ most infamous landmarks including the Three Sisters, Katoomba Falls and Jamison Valley. The cablecar here was the first to go into use in Australia, dating back to 1958.

A trip to the Blue Mountains wouldn’t be the same without visiting Wentworth Falls, not only to experience the town but also the spectacular waterfall that follows this namesake. A three-tiered waterfall that stands at 614 feet in height, the top of the falls is easily accessible from the Wentworth Falls Lookout which can be accessed from the car park along a sloping paved footpath. On your way to Wentworth Falls, you will want to stop at Jamison Lookout to admire the panoramic scenes across the Jamison Valley.

wentworth falls blue mountains

For those that are wanting the ultimate experience, follow the steep winding trail that runs beside the waterfall until you reach the valley floor – the views looking up the three tiers of the waterfall are epic but you will need plenty of energy to make your way back to the summit.

Visitors to the Blue Mountains are going to be inundated with opportunities to explore the incredible views and landscapes throughout this area of New South Wales. However, if you are ready to grab a bite to eat or ready to explore a historic part of this region, head into the town of Katoomba to enjoy rich, cultural heritage along with a myriad of additional spectacular walks and lookouts.

Whether you are inspired by the idea of sampling local cuisine or perhaps contemporary options at Pins on Lurlene inside a 19th-century property, the collection of restaurants and local establishments is endless. Don’t forget to wander inside the various souvenir shops, showcasing local products that are the perfect gift or item to take away to create perfect memories of your trip into the Blue Mountains.

A scenic walk through the Blue Mountains is a great way to experience the true beauty of this region and one of the iconic trails is the Prince Henry Cliff Walk. The walk along the cliff path takes visitors from Katoomba to Leura, and goes past the Three Sisters and Echo Point landmarks en route to Leura. If you love breathtaking scenery, there are not many better ways to accomplish the best sights around the Blue Mountains than by taking a leisurely stroll along this Cliff Walk.

prince henry cliff walk

The route between Katoomba and Leura is approximately 7km in each direction and will likely take anywhere from 3-4 hours. However, there are ample opportunities to stop along the route to admire the breathtaking scenery and we highly recommend packing your lunch to enjoy along the way as you will be presented with a myriad of epic views that you likely won’t want to leave behind.

blue mountains new south wales

If you visited Echo Point to experience the quintessential overlook of the Three Sisters, you may have decided to take the trail to this iconic attraction and the stairway. This is the start of the Giant Stairway which descends into the valley with 800+ steps and has a myriad of breathtaking vistas across the Blue Mountains. This stairway certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted but it’s one of the most rewarding experiences in the Blue Mountains.

giant stairway blue mountains

One of the great benefits of taking the Giant Stairway, except for the amazing views, is the ability to access a myriad of other attractions around the Blue Mountains – Echo Point is obviously at the summit and then as you descend, you can quickly access Katoomba Falls and Scenic World is an alternative option to climb back to the top rather than having to face the prospect of climbing those 800 steps.

giant stairway new south wales

The Blue Mountains are the perfect day trip destination from Sydney, not only if you are looking to get away from life in the city but also because it’s such an incredible landscape waiting to be explored. While the iconic Three Sisters landmark is a “must-see” for everyone visiting the region, there are plenty of other attractions that you cannot afford to miss. Whether you are inspired to explore the historic town of Katoomba or simply head out on a long hike along Prince Henry Cliff Walk, the opportunities for exploring are endless.

The Blue Mountains look beautiful, those stairs look scary, but I still would love to climb them for the views.

We so want to visit the Blue Mountains! It’s been on our To Do list for quite a while – granted, sort of on the back burner since we have yet to get to Australia in the first place. 😉 Such great photos, and that scenery!! On the other hand, there are those stairs. Gotta say, there’s a lot of them. Kinda intimidating. 😉

I have been to Sydney a number of times but always find so much to do in the city that I have never made it to the Blue Mountains. The scenery and rock structures are quite amazing. Perhaps next time, I’ll venture further than Manly.

Travel is one of the favorite hobbies for most people. To start a self-guided tour is not easy but it is full of adventures. I read the above article about your self-guided tour, its amazing . Thanks

Thanks so much for this blog. It’s delightful and inspiring.

But are not as physically strenuous or difficult, as the 900 step Giant Stairway, to access certain lookouts and sights?

I would prefer a guided day tour (of the Blue Mountains) with some, moderate walking.

- Because I have much more walking to do in another national park, later during the week I will be visiting Sydney.

I am not recommending anybody, but here are a few guided tours offering an actual hike:

https://www.bluemts.com.au/1040/tread-lightly-eco-tours/ - been in business a while, and I have heard good feedback.

https://bmac.com.au/blue-mountains-walking - a range of guided walks, including the newly-opened Grand Cliff Top Walk (for which you don’t really need any guiding)

Thank you. I appreciate that.

Nothing about tour companies customers/passengers.

The fee you are referring to applies only to people entering the NPWS-managed camping ground at Glenbrook, which is way down the highway, just up from Penrith , and only applies to cars . (Up here in Katoomba we call Glenbrook 'Penrith Heights'.) This area has a gate and comprises less than 0.000001% of the Blue Mountains National Park. I may be exaggerating a tad, but my point is that tour companies, especially those catering to the Asian group tour market, will charge the so-called BMNP entry fee as part of the tour cost without going anywhere near Euroka at Glenbrook. Tour buses going to Euroka to spot kangaroos are these days more likely to stop off at Featherdale Wildlife Park in suburban Doonside either on the way to Echo Point (free entry!) or on the return to Sydney .
