Your Best of France Travels Secrets of Brittany discovery begins tomorrow morning!
We will say ‘au revoir’ to our main group mid-morning and depart by coach for northern Brittany. We’ll travel directly to Rennes, the capital of Brittany, arriving just in time for a delicious group lunch.
After lunch, we’ll meet our local guide for a walking tour of the city center including a visit to Saint Pierre Cathedral, with its origins dating back to the 4th century. The city was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1720, but over centuries, it has been rebuilt and is a vibrant mix of the old and the new, including the traditional half-timbered houses known throughout Brittany.
The city also has a unique arts history and we will discover some of the mosaic arts which were established by the great Italian Odorico family of mosaic artisans in the late 19th century.
Later this afternoon, we will check into our hotel with the remainder of the evening free for you to explore on your own.
With thanks – Image by Yves from Pixabay
Today we’re off to discover the truly charming Dinan! This beautiful medieval town with its ramparts, cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses is perfect to discover at your own pace. It was once a great center for weaving and hide tanning between the 14-18th centuries. You will discover a variety of artisans and craftspeople from woodwork to glass-blowing.
We will return to Rennes late afternoon. Enjoy dinner on your own.
With thanks – Image by Andreas from Pixabay
We will travel to the delightful medieval city of Vitré this morning. It’s market day in Vitré today! The city center, with it’s half-timbered buildings and cobblestone streets, provides a charming backdrop as you explore the market and center of town with its boutiques and cafes.
With thanks – Image by Welcome to All ! ツ from Pixabay
Vitré was once a center for the cloth trade and is a listed “Art and Heritage town”.
As you explore, you may also see some of the Ordorico mosaics throughout the town. You might like to visit the Château de Vitré, with its origins dating back to the 11th century.
We will enjoy a delicious lunch at a local crêperie.
After lunch, we will travel to the small town of Bazouges-la-Pérouse, home to the Château de la Ballue to visit its magnificent manicured gardens, hedge mazes and views across the Brittany countryside. This 17th century château was once a haven for writers (such as Balzac and Victor Hugo) and painters who were inspired by the rolling landscape.
We will return to Rennes late afternoon with the remainder of the evening is free for dinner on your own.
Today we will travel just over the regional border into Normandy to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mont St Michel. The abbey atop the fortified island dominates the landscape. Once only accessible during low tides, there is now a causeway for us to access the island easily. It is a short walk to access the shuttle transfer to the island.
Our local guide will join us and explain some of the history of the abbey, the island upon which it sits and also point out some unique sights! There will be time for you to explore at your own pace and for lunch on your own.
We will return to Rennes late afternoon with some free time to rest before our group farewell dinner this evening.
With thanks – Image by Ralf Mohrs from Pixabay
Check out of the hotel after breakfast this morning and bid ‘Au revoir’ to the beautiful region of Brittany. We will arrange your private transfer to Rennes-St Jacques Airport or Rennes (SNCF) train station per your departure schedule.
Customers' Appreciation
“After a one-year wait for Carol to develop her Brittany trip, we went on it in June. We very much enjoyed the new Brittany trip. My favorite hotel was the Moulins du Duc because of its magnificent environment, the history that was apparent, and the quaintness of the rooms. And the food … ooh la la! We also were amazed by Carnac and the stones. We did not know they even existed before we arrived on the bus. It was fascinating! I thought Nantes was a very interesting stop for the city itself, the slavery information, and the elephant and other things at the “Le Machine” museum. I was especially impressed by the slavery exhibit by the river and the slavery section in the castle museum. They made me think. We will gladly come to France again! Another trip to Provence would be one we would like to do.” Donna and Gary D. – Wilmington SC

The Perfect Weekend in Brittany (Suggested 3 Day Itineraries)

Last Updated on 12th September 2022 by Sophie Nadeau
Three days in Brittany a must for anyone who spends a longer stint in France than a simple sojourn in Paris. Whether you’re looking for medieval towns, coastal walks, or a quiet place to visit, we have you covered. Here are perfect itineraries for a weekend in Brittany.
Since we’ve covered Brittany (Bretagne in French) so many times on the website, we’ve actually got two different suggested itineraries for the Western French regions. While one covers the Westerly point, Morbihan, the other covers the more populated part of the region and focuses on medieval towns.
So if you prefer wild coastline, be sure to check out the first itinerary. If medieval towns speak to you more, then be sure to check out the second itinerary for 3 days in Brittany!
Why visit Brittany?
Is 3 days enough time to visit brittany, day 1: quiberon, day 2: cote sauvage & presqu’ile de quiberon, day 3: carnac (karnag in breton), day one: fortifications and the sea, day two: historic houses and medieval towns, day three: the sea rules the land in this part of the world, a final note…, enjoyed reading about how to spend a long weekend in brittany, western france pin it now, read it again later:.
A world of sea meets land in North Western France: the region of Brittany is a magical place with oodles of history and even its own language, that of Breton . Head there if you want to experience life out of Paris, visit some beautiful medieval villages and experience some local delicacies you can’t try anywhere else in L’Hexagone.
Population: 4.5 million+
Regions: Brittany is divided into four regions: Morbihan is in the south (this is where we stayed), Finistere is to the West (and is the western most point of France), Cotes d’Armor is in the North (this region borders the English channel and is popular with English tourists) and Ille-et-Vilaine is to the East (this is the part of Brittany that borders the rest of France)
Known for: Incredible coastline, regional cuisine (such as butter and cakes made from butter), King Arthurian legends (one of the neolithic rocks in the region is said to mark the final resting place of Merlin), the dolmens at Carnac (one of the largest neolithic sites in the World).
Language: French, Breton
Currency: Euro
Climate: Moderate temperatures throughout the year, particularly rainy in the Autumn.
Three days is not enough time to fully explore everything that Brittany has to offer. Instead, you should focus on visiting one particular area of Brittany as you’ll otherwise be spending a lot of time travelling around (Brittany is pretty vast, after all).
Three days in the Morbihan Region
There’s nothing quite like that feeling just before you see the sea again. You smell it first, the salt in the air and then you hear it, the waves crashing on the rocks below…
The quaint town of Quiberon sits at the very end of Presqu’ile de Quiberon (literally ‘almost island’- so named because the strip connecting the almost-island to the mainland is barely more than a couple of hundred meters wide) . The area is beautiful and you could easily spend a weekend just on Presqu’Île de Quiberon !
With a beach, a port, a cinema, food stands and an ice cream parlour boasting over a hundred flavours, it’s the perfect day to spend a rainy afternoon. And if you’re looking for a fantastic place to stay, then you need to look no further than booking a stay at La Petite Sirène .
A protected stretch of coast that extends almost 5km in length, the Cote Sauvage (literally ‘ savage coastline ‘) is a haven for wildlife such as rare birds and rabbits (dusk is the best time to spot rabbits!) During WWII, the coastline was a strategic point and so the area is filled in old WWII bunkers.
The sunsets are jaw-dropping and the coastal walks, unparalleled… Other highlights of wandering along the Cote Sauvage include plenty of sandy beaches where you can swim, paddle, and even partake in watersports depending on the weather conditions!
Not only is Carnac home to fairytale beaches and a port filled with history, but it’s also home to one of the largest neolithic sites in the entire world, making the Carnac stones pretty cool place to visit. Full of acres of fields filled with menhirs (standing ceremonial stones) that were placed in situ contemporary with the Pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge, there were originally over 3000 menhirs ( although no one knows exactly why they were placed there ).
Today, one of the many stones still standing is said to mark the final resting place of the great magician Merlin from Arthurian legends. For more information on the stones, you should visit the Maison des Mégalithes, a museum that details the discovery of the stones and theories regarding their origins.
Following a visit to the Karnag Stones, a visit to the town of Carnac is a must! Head to the tourism office first for a town map and a quick rundown of what’s on in the area. Afterwards, explore at your leisure, making sure not to miss out on town highlights such as the beach and many traditional French brasseries!
Three days in Ille-et-Vilaine and its surrounds
Day one snakes along the jagged coastline of the region, in search of the fortified towns and historic castles in the area. It’s the perfect itinerary for those travelling with friends, as well as family. To get the best out of your day, I highly recommend packing a picnic as food prices in Saint-Malo have definitely recently risen to match the increase in tourism!
Fort du Guesclin
The imposing and ancient tidal island of Fort du Guesclin juts out to sea and is cut off from mainland France twice a day, every day. Although the island itself is sadly private, you can still stroll along the beach, paddle in the sea (or swim if you’re feeling brave) and enjoy the Breton coastline for yourself.
The historic settlement of Saint-Malo is located on the very fringes of the ocean on its own peninsula and was founded by the Gauls as early as the First Century CE. An ancient port town, this walled city was once famous for its ‘privateering’ (fancy word for pirate) escapades throughout the middle ages.
Today, Saint-Malo is filled with quirky buildings, cobbled lanes and small museums. Saint-Malo is also the town where Jacques Cartier, the man who claimed Canada for France came from meaning that the town has strong ties with Quebec.
Soak up nature at Le Pointe du Grouin
Pretty and wild, especially during the golden hours of the day, Le Pointe du Grouin should definitely not be missed on your trip to Brittany. Head here with friends and a picnic to get the most out of this little piece of Wilderness in Western France.
Situated on the very edges of the bay of Mont Saint Michel, this rocky outcrop is perfect for bird spotting (nearby Île des Landes is now a designated bird sanctuary) and is the Northern most tip of Cancale, meaning that here you’ll get some of the very best views out onto the sea. On a clear day, if you look out to sea clearly enough, you’ll see the towering spires and conical shape on Mont Saint Michel in the distance.
Day two of your three days in Brittany itinerary will take you to some of the more historic and medieval towns in the region where people really lived. Whereas Saint-Malo was fortified and known for its independence streak, the towns and villages you’ll see today are traditional Breton villages and typical of the medieval era and beyond.
Enjoy the flowers at Domaine Montmarin
Located not far from Saint-Malo, the magical gardens and château at Domaine Montmarin are open to the public and the grounds can be explored for a fee. Head here to see tropical flowers, the beautiful façade of an 18th-Century French Château, and admire magnificent views of the Rance estuary. Also make sure to take a trip to the Domaine if you love hydrangeas; I’ve never seen them in such abundance before!
Take a trip to the historic town of Dinan
Magical, medieval and inviting, the historic town of Dinan is like something straight out of a storybook. That is, if your novel is a fairytale from the middle ages! Head here to see one of the best-preserved examples of a French medieval town in France today.
Wander along the fortified ramparts, walk down the ancient high street and see the historic port that was once so important to the town’s trade. While in Dinan, make sure to also sample a Kouign-Amann . This regional specialty consists of a third sugar, a third butter and is deliciously sweet!
Visit the beautiful village of Saint Suliac
Often named as one of the most beautiful villages in all of France, and as such, one of the most beautiful towns in Brittany , Saint Suliac is truly stunning. And between increasing tourism in the area and the modernisation of much of France, it’s one of those rare gems that’s definitely becoming harder and harder to come by.
Head here to sit by the sea, wander the cobbled lanes and soak up some history in the 12th-Century church; all without too many tourists! Since the town is fairly small with few tourist attractions, you don’t need more than a couple of hours to wander around and soak up the atmosphere.
Your third and final day of your three days in Brittany guide takes you into the wilder parts of the region, as well as to a historical and mythical site of Mont Saint Michel. Though you’ll be leaving the region today, the experiences will likely stay with you for a while (I still remember all my trips to the magical French coastline like it was yesterday haha!)
Wander along the coastline
Brittany lies right along the coastline, meaning that it’s filled with secret coves, sandy beaches, and breathtaking coastal walks. After spending the past two days exploring all the small towns and villages that the region has to offer, head to the coastline to hike right beside the sea and spend some time in nature.
Take a trip to Mont Saint Michel
First up (because I know this will be pointed out to me otherwise): Mont Saint Michel is not in Brittany, Instead it is located in Normandy, though the two regions have been arguing for its inclusion in their own part of France for centuries.
It should also be noted that a large chunk of Brittany is located in the Bay of Mont Saint Michel (including the pretty and wild tip of Pointe du Grouin).
For those who have never heard of UNESCO world heritage site Mont Saint Michel before, it is a tidal island that gets cut off from the rest of mainland France twice a day by the sea.
Located around a kilometre from the rest of the land, the island has been fortified for millennia and has been the location for a monastery since at least the 8th Century. Head here if you want to learn about ecclesiastical history, or simply if you want to see the stunning location and its structures for yourself.
If there’s one thing that you make a point of doing during your weekend in Brittany, make it watching the sunset over the sea. There’s nothing quite like seeing the last glimpses of sunlight, falling over the horizon and glistening on the sea.
Also, be sure to try one of the many famed local delicacies; crepes, galettes (salty and made with buckwheat) and ciders all hail from the region.

We always think that landscapes like that are somewhere on the other part of the planet, but understanding that the destination is way closer makes me really happy:)

Our guide to Brittany’s Emerald Coast
Par Jade Simon, translated by Stephanie Green
The dream hotel: Le Castelbrac
One gets to the Castellbrac via a small boat, departing from Saint-Malo towards Dinard. Then, a minute’s walk from the dock, stands this smart hotel, opened in 2015, which checks off all the boxes of the perfect Breton beach house. Just two steps away from the waves, a large grey stone building holds garlands of sunny terraces, including the one where Pourquoi Pas chef Julien Hennote serves his elevated seafood cuisine (marinated seabass, herrings from Petrossian, blue lobster…), or the one leading up to the fabulous slender swimming pool. The terraces also abut the rooms, decorated by Sandra Benhamou in a thirties-inspired style that makes the most of vintage leafy wallpaper. At the core of the peaceful getaway stands another treat: the spa, which promises to dispel built-up bad vibes with a Singaporean massage featuring Thémaé essential oils, or even a Gemology facial, guaranteed to infuse your skin with its minerals that will make you look like you’ve been enjoying the seaside air of this little gem in the Atlantic that whole time.

La Villa Hortense
A dream breakfast spot (that you’ll want to revisit at lunch and dinner as well), Villa Hortense hovers above Dinard’s main beach. The Napoléon III-style hotel is one of the city’s musts, and with its seven rooms and one suite, it will be perfect for your next getaway with your gaggle of friends.
19 Rue de la Malouine, 35800 Dinard, Tel. +33 2 99 46 54 31
Shopping: Autour du monde par Bensimon
The 200 square-meter home décor boutique opened its doors in 2015 in the heart of Dinard. Breton stripes (natch), tableware, kitchen accessories abound, in keeping with a strict marine theme (not that we’re complaining). The perfect place to decorate your seaside summer home – or to bring a bit of the sea back home to the city.
8 Rue du Maréchal Leclerc, 35800 Dinard, Tel. +33 2 99 48 76 87
A bar that dominates the beach: L'Albatros
Perched on top of the Dinard Novotel Thalassa hotel, L'Albatros provides a sweeping view of the Saint-Malo bay and Harbour Island. Enjoy what the locals have perfected over centuries: fresh oysters paired with a crisp white wine – or give in to a modern, inventive cocktail. The perfect spot to have a drink at the end of the evening.
Avenue du Château Hébert, 35800 Dinard, Tel. +33 2 99 16 78 10
The moonlight walk
As famous as the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, the “Promenade au Claire de Lune”, or the “Moonlight walk”, was created in Dinard in the 1930s. Framed by palm trees and a stone’s throw from the seafront, it’s dotted with some of the most beautiful houses in the city, with classical music playing during summer evenings.
Thalassotherapy lovers will adore the Thermes Marins in Saint-Malo. This five-star hotel sits on the seafront, and invites guests to discover the pleasures of marine life. The décor is quite old-fashioned, but the hotel houses a spa which offers treatments (relaxing massages, plumping facials) made in-house with natural marine products. In the thalassotherapy area, opt for algae body wraps, water modeling, water-relaxing exercises, and cranial reflexology. With a program based on the needs and desires of each person (detox, fatigue, stress, fitness), it’s effective and impeccably implemented.
100, Grande Plage du Sillon, Boulevard Hébert, 35400 Saint-Malo, Tel.+33 2 99 40 75 75
Seafood with a view: Le 5
At the top of Chateaubriand Hotel , Le 5 invites visitors to enjoy all things seafood. With its stunning view, seafaring menu and varied options, diners can choose between seafood, fish or grilled meat platters. Simple yet effective.
12, Place Chateaubriand 35400 Saint-Malo, Tel.+33 2 99 56 66 52
Concept store: La Réserve
La Réserve is teeming with hidden treasures, from Yves Delorme linens and Serax ceramics to Vitra armchairs and Aesop beauty kits. Compiling furniture, objects, accessories, clothing, jewelry and skincare, this concept store, run by the Maison Générale , is nestled in the heart of Saint Malo. Don’t forget to visit the tearoom, to taste the Maître Tseng tea and enjoy homemade pastries.
6 Rue Saint-Thomas, 35400 Saint-Malo, Tel.+33 2 99 20 11 00
A Breton-style Japanese pub: Otonali
Otonali is proof that Breizh Café is continuing its world domination, which is located on rue de l’Orme. Chef Yasu Hayashi offers delicious, traditional small Japanese plates that include Breton influences. Expect Sumiso seafood and cucumber shrimp, sea bream and scallop sashimi, breaded pork tonkatsu, buckheat pasta, sweetbreads and Breton lobster, which is all recommended to be washed down with delicious sake or a glass from the hefty wine selection.
6-8 Rue de l'Orme, 35400 Saint-Malo, Tel.+33 2 23 18 76 81
Seafood: Le Bénétin
Located between the Varde and Grouin peninsulas, the Arnaud Beruel -led Le Bénétin is the top restaurant in the area, catering to locavores with its seasonal menus featuring fresh Cancale oysters, Saint-Jacques broth, coconut curry with prawns and oysters, and sole fillet with asparagus and coriander. With lobster rounding out the offering, Le Bénétin is the true taste of Saint-Malo.
4 Chemin des Rochers Sculptés, 35400 Saint-Malo, Tel.+33 2 99 56 97 64
The natural swimming pool at Bon-Secours
At the foot of Saint-Malo’s ramparts, this fantastic salt-water pool has attracted crowds of residents and tourists alike for decades. Filled naturally by the tide, this perfectly-Instagrammable Art Deco-style pool is perhaps the city’s most popular place to go.
A taste of Japan: La Table Breizh
Chef Raphaël Fumio-Kudaka ’s offshoot, located on the incredible Breizh Café ’s first floor, has made its mark in Cancale. With its ever-changing seasonal menu that weaves French and Japanese cuisine together, zen-like light-colored wood décor, and breathtaking view of the bay, this fusion spot literally elevates the Cancale dining scene.
7 quai Thomas (1st floor), 35260 Cancale, Tel. +33 2 99 89 56 46
A walk in nature: Pointe du Grouin
The jagged cliffs of Cancale’s Pointe du Grouin are truly the region’s must-hike panorama. On a clear day, you can even see Mont St-Michel.
Spice up your life: Épices Roellinger
There is simply no Cancale without In Cancale, family, who have been building their own culinary empire. They also own the always fully-booked Le Coquillage restaurant, a string of relaxing seaside bed-and-breakfasts (the Gîtes Marins ), and Grain de Vanille , a delicious patisserie in the middle of the village. Cancale’s foodie gold mine.

The Breton Flag
Not surprisingly, the flag of Bretagne, called Gwenn ha du in Breton, is full of symbols just like the region it represents. Designed in 1925, each of its former dioceses are represented by a stripe, the white ones for the South and the black ones for the North, with the ermine as symbol of its Duchy.

Traditional Breton Costumes
Brittany is known for its finest lace head-dresses or Coiffes worn by Breton women. Design and shape will vary upon the location. The "Bigouden" tall round coiffe from Pont-l'Abbé is probably the best known. Nowadays, it is rare to see ladies wearing one unless it is a special occasion like pardons , other main religious days or festivals. With a coiffe, they wear deep coloured embroidered dresses with usually a white apron. Men's outfit usually consists of a black felt hat with a large rubbon and a velvet embroidered waistcoat matching the design of the ladies. For shoes, traditionally they would have worn clogs (sabots) but these are totally out of fashion nowadays. You might find a local shoes shop that sell them for the tourists rather than for the local demand.

Jim Pickard in London
Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
Rishi Sunak will say that Britain is “at a crossroads” on Monday, with voters facing big political choices in a more volatile world, as he tees up the Conservative party for the UK general election expected this year.
In a speech in London, the prime minister will say he has “bold ideas” that can change British society for the better and restore people’s confidence and national pride.
“I feel a profound sense of urgency. Because more will change in the next five years than in the last 30,” he will say, adding: “Our country stands at a crossroads.”
Sunak is trying to revive Conservative morale as the party languishes 20 points behind the opposition Labour party in opinion polls . At least 64 Tory MPs have announced that they will step down at the election, which is expected in the second half of this year.
The governing party shed hundreds of council seats in local elections in England and Wales on May 2, as well as losing the Blackpool South by-election and the West Midlands mayoralty to Labour.
Yet Sunak’s team has found hope in economic data and the suggestion by psephologist Professor Michael Thrasher that the local elections pointed towards a potential hung parliament, if voters cast their ballots in the same way in the general election.
Sunak will say on Monday that, while the UK faces new threats in a more volatile world, the opportunities to transform and build “brighter, more secure futures” for British families are “huge”.
He will say the government needs to keep “safeguarding the nation’s security” against war, a global rise in immigration and “those seeking to undermine our shared values and identities”.
“Over the next few years, from our democracy to our economy to our society — to the hardest questions of war and peace — almost every aspect of our lives is going to change,” Sunak will say.
The prime minister will criticise Labour for opposing the government’s Rwanda removal scheme and failing to match his pledge to increase defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP by the end of the decade, a policy partly funded by cutting 70,000 civil service jobs.
Although Sir Keir Starmer has said he wants to meet the 2.5 per cent defence target “as soon as resources allow”, the Labour leader has yet to set out a costed alternative.
At the election, which must be held by January 2025, Labour will try to hammer home the message that the Conservative party is worn out after 14 years in power.
In the speech Sunak will acknowledge his party has been in power for a long time but emphasise the challenges with which successive Tory administrations have had to deal since 2010, including the aftermath of the 2008-09 global financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
“At heart, we’re a nation of optimists. We’re not blind to the challenges or threats we face,” he will say. “We just have an innate belief that, whatever they are, we can overcome them as we have done so many times in our history.”
One Tory aide said Sunak, 44, was comfortable with change. “Keir Starmer is a little older [61] and grounded in older ideas, whereas Rishi Sunak is . . . confident in new technologies,” they said. “I don’t think you’ll get that fresh thinking from Starmer.”
Bookmakers at present put the Conservative party at a distant 35:1 to win the election, but some of Sunak’s advisers believe the polls exaggerate Labour’s lead.
Thrasher suggested his estimate of the local election result — with Labour on 34 per cent and the Tories on 27 per cent — was not enough to guarantee the opposition party a general election majority.
But critics of Thrasher have said they expect people to cast their ballots differently in a national election, with more anti-Tory tactical voting and more Reform UK candidates splitting the right-wing vote.
