Recently, more and more audiophiles from younger generations are showing an interest in the world of vinyl. That’s partly due to the modernized record players that are sweeping the market with cute designs and high-tech features.

As it happens, Crosley Radio comes high on the list of brands that cater to this specific market with turntables like the Cruiser and the Voyager. That’s why I just had to see what the fuss was all about.

So, how would each record player perform in a Crosley Cruiser vs. Voyager head-to-head comparison, and are they actually worth the shot? That’s what I set out to find!

Crosley Cruiser vs. Voyager: Overview

Both the Cruiser and the Voyager run on belt-drive, three-speed motors, but the Cruiser’s suitcase design has an edge in portability. Meanwhile, the Voyager’s main appeal is the Bluetooth-out feature that increases the speaker compatibility range over traditional RCAs and 3.5 mm jack input.

What Is the Crosley Cruiser?

The Voyager is yet another belt-driven three-speed vinyl record player by Crosley Radio. It takes all the basic aspects of the Cruiser Deluxe and pushes up a notch with extra Bluetooth-out connectivity.

However, the Voyager ditches the suitcase style for a more sleek box design in a slightly heavier build. Yet, it maintains the vintage touch with a selection of colors and patterned finishes between florals, washed blues, amethyst, botanicals, and timeless tans.

In principle, both vinyl record players are highly similar, but still, there are a few variations in the specification list that might sway you one way or the other.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the main differences between the Cruiser and the Voyager turntables:

Portability

Although both the Voyager and the Cruiser are around 5.5 lbs, the Cruiser wins this round if we’re judging by portability.

So, if they both weigh roughly the same, why is that?

For one, the suitcase design with a handle makes it much easier to carry around from room to room. Meanwhile, the non-handled design on the Voyager requires a bit more care when you’re lifting it.

Additionally, the whole Cruiser body is more compact than the Voyager, with a 2.75” difference in both width and depth. However, the turntable height is similar in both Crosley models.

Accommodating Vinyl Sizes

You’ll get to play standard full-size LPs on either Crosley turntables. However, since the Voyager box has a bit more depth, fitting vinyl records is usually less of a hassle.

Meanwhile, on the Cruiser, you might even need to tilt the cover lid all the way back to make room for the vinyl. Otherwise, the cover could get in the way of the spinning record.

So, the compact design of the Cruiser can be a double-edged sword in that case!

Bluetooth Pairing

A whole lot of the connectivity options on the Voyager and Cruiser are pretty much the same, but the main distinguishing point is the Bluetooth pairing.

Both models can receive signals from compatible devices via Bluetooth. This option means that you can ditch the vinyl altogether and stream something from your mobile to the Crosley speakers.

However, the Voyager (and the Cruiser Plus) take things up a notch by offering a Bluetooth-out connectivity feature that you won’t find on the Cruiser Deluxe.

This way, you can even play your vinyl to a more powerful external Bluetooth speaker if you’re not happy with the built-in one, making it a nice addition for parties. Alternately, you can always opt to throw the audio output to wireless headphones to hear your vinyl music privately.

On the Cruiser, you’ll have to settle for hooking up wired speaker cables in the jack at the back of the turntable if you want to use external speakers.

Display Mode Indicators

Most Crosley’s record players have more-or-less the same control knobs and switches. That said, there’s one major thing on the Voyager’s turntable controls that you won’t spot on the Cruiser Deluxe, and that’s the function indicator.

This indicator ties back to the connectivity features since it changes colors based on the mode that’s currently activated. It’s actually a very nifty addition that smoothes out the function switching!

For instance, if you connect an Aux input to the Voyager, the indicator will be purple. Meanwhile, it goes red for regular turntable operation in the PHONO position.

If the light is solid blue, it indicates that the input source is Bluetooth, but if it flashes blue, it’s still pending pairing with a compatible device.

Power Input

Many of Crosley’s turntables require a standard 9W power consumption. Yet, it’s important to note that the Voyager (and the Cruiser Plus) both need an adapter with DC output 5V 1A.

Meanwhile, the Cruiser Deluxe models (CR8005D) run on DC output 12V 0.5A.

So, that’s something to watch out for before you decide to swap power adaptors between the two vinyl players. After all, you probably don’t want to fry the motor before you even get a chance to hear it go!

Speaker Performance

On both the Voyager and the Cruiser, you get a 4Ω, 3W speaker output. While this might look like a similarity on the specifications list, you might appreciate the speakers on the Voyager a bit more.

That’s because the larger frame on the Voyager gives more room to enhance the speakers inside the vinyl record player than the more portable Cruiser models. It’s not really a major difference in audio quality, but if you keep your ears open for it, you’ll spot it.

Plus, some people tend to criticize the stereo functionality of the Crosley Cruiser models since the speakers are too close together to give you an actual stereo experience.

In most cases, you’d expect at least four feet of separation like you would with regular bookshelf speakers.

The main appeal of Crosley turntables is that they’re affordable and make good options for starter kits. So, neither the Voyager nor the Cruiser is particularly expensive.

However, the Cruiser Deluxe comes with a smaller price tag than the Voyager. That’s actually understandable when you consider the difference in features and specifications.

Crosley Cruiser vs. Voyager: How Are They Similar?

Now that we’ve covered all the significant differences, let’s take a look at what both Crosley turntables have in common:

Control Board Knobs and Switches

Visually, the Voyager and the Cruiser have similar knobs and controls. The control board on the right on both turntables has:

• Spin speed switch
• Pitch control knob to “fine tune” the spin speed up to 10%
• Hold-down clip
• Shared knob for on/off and volume
• Auto-stop switch
• Cueing lever

Three-Speed Switches

The Voyager and the Cruiser have a belt-drive motor that caters to three spin speeds at 33 1/3, 45, or 78 RPM.

Plus, both Crosley turntable models allow you to adjust the speed by up to 10% using the pitch control knob. If you turn it clockwise, you’ll increase the RPM rate slightly and vice versa.

This adjustability allows you to play various vinyl records on your Crosley players. Just note that the 78 RPM might not be as common as the 33 and the 45 ones, but it’s still better to have the feature around for when you need it!

For the 78 RPM speed setting, you’ll mainly get to play old gospels and kids’ records. However, if these 78 vinyl records are particularly valuable , it might be better to save them for a more advanced turntable with a higher-quality needle.

So, for the most part, you’ll be switching between the 33 and 45 spin speeds on either the Voyager or the Cruiser record players.

Playback Mechanism

The operating system on the Voyager and the Cruiser requires manual operation instead of the auto-return tonearm you might see on something like Crosley’s T200 turntable.

So, to get the turntable going, you’ll have to rotate the on/off/volume knob to the power position, set the function, choose the desired spinning speed, and move the arm manually.

To do that, you need to release the hold-down clip to be able to lift the tonearm, remove the stylus protector, and then slowly drop the needle on the vinyl.

That said, the auto-return feature is slowly disappearing from many other brands’ product categories, not just Crosley. That’s mainly because some people see that fully manual operation adds to the experience of playing vinyl records.

However, they do have an auto-stop feature that keeps the platter from spinning after the record plays to the end.

Keep in mind that the counterweight isn’t a strength point in either the Voyager or the Cruiser since they’re not meant to be part of an advanced setup.

Cable and Wireless Input

On the back of both Crosley vinyl record players, you’ll find a cable and wireless connections slot.

This slot includes:

• RCA outputs
• 3.55 mm Aux jack
• Power adapter input
• Built-in Bluetooth receiver

For the RCA, the setup is pretty much standard, with the red plug to the right channel and the white to the left. So, you don’t really need much experience to figure it out.

Of course, you’ll need to hook those up to an active speaker, not a passive one. Otherwise, the audio will be nearly inaudible. Alternatively, you can use the built-in speakers.

Meanwhile, the most important thing to watch out for with the Aux jack sources is that it overrides all the turntable and Bluetooth operation modes.

This override often confuses people when their turntable seems unresponsive just because they forget that an Aux cord is plugged in.

NP6 Needles

Like many other Crosley vinyl players, the Voyager and the Cruiser are compatible with the NP6 needle, which has an ABS plastic body with a sapphire/diamond tip. Meanwhile, the cartridge is a standard ceramic set.

You might hear a lot of people dragging this needle and cartridge setup through the mud, saying that it ruins vinyl records and makes the whole turntable impractical.

However, it’s not really all that terrible, especially considering that its primary target audience is first-time turntable owners. In that case, most of the vinyl records in the collection won’t be antique valuables, anyway.

When you start to notice a drop in the needle’s precision, it might be time to get a replacement piece. However, according to Crosley, each needle can last for a whopping 1000 hours of playback!

What’s Better About the Crosley Cruiser?

If you’re into the Cruiser’s suitcase design, here are the main highlights to look forward to in this Crosley three-speed vinyl turntable:

• You can take the Cruiser on the go . The compact body and easy-to-carry design make the turntable highly portable.
• You don’t have to compromise features and designs. The Cruiser comes in two models (Deluxe and Plus) with varying features, colors, and price points.

It’s also a decent fit for bedrooms and offices where you’ll be sharing your music with someone else and don’t really care about listing privately.

Additionally, the cute designs make the Cruiser vinyl record player an ideal setup for younger kids and teenagers. The Cruiser Plus model even caters to all tastes with over 20 color options to pick from.

Crosley Voyager

While the Voyager is lightweight, it might not be the best choice in the Crosley catalog for someone who prioritizes portability, especially when there are other options like the Cruiser out there.

Instead, the Voyager would be an ideal fit for someone who needs to balance the experience of vinyl playback with the convenience of streaming to a Bluetooth headphone.

The Crosley Voyager Is a Cute Turntable, but It’s Not for the Vinyl Die-Hard

The Crosley Voyager Bluetooth Portable Turntable comes in a number of colours, but there’s also the Cruiser range with a handful more. I picked the amethyst Voyager, because it looked like it was lifted straight out of a 70s diner.

I wasn’t exactly expecting a kick-ass sound, but I was expecting it to look shmick. I got what I was expecting on both counts.

Crosley Voyager Bluetooth Portable Turntable

The turntable does what it promises: it plays records and connects via Bluetooth. The Voyager is one of the more budget models, but it’s not the cheapest system Crosley sells. Here’s the pitch from Crosley:

“Join Crosley’s mission to bring analogue music to the masses with the Voyager three-speed turntable. The clean, vintage-inspired aesthetic fits into any space, while the lightweight design allows this record player to travel ‘further than anyone, or anything in history’.”

While it’s undeniably cute, the style of the Crosley Voyager Turntable isn’t Earth-shattering, it’s something we’re used to seeing, with the retro-looking briefcase aesthetic picked up by many a turntable makers. But, the number of colour options you have with the Voyager is something Crosley has nailed in the briefcase turntable space.

This couldn’t have been easier, but easy setup is something we’ve all become accustomed to. You simply unbox the Crosley Voyager Turntable, plug it in, switch it on and you’re ready to place your record.

With the record down, the lever allows for easy drop in of the needle. It’s a little slow, but better to be safe than sorry. You shouldn’t have to fiddle with the pitch (but there’s an easy-to-use knob if you want to) and volume is controlled by another button.

I accidentally switched the turntable off when I was adjusting the sound, but that’s because I was doing it above eye-level. There’s truly not that much more to it, which is both good and bad. Good because it’s easy, and Crosley has taken the effort off you, and bad because it takes the power away from the user who knows what they’re doing. But, we’ve got to go at this thing from a vinyl novice perspective. In that case, it’s good.

How does it sound?

It’s important to remember that the Crosley Voyager Turntable is ~$200, so you’re going to get $200-worth of sound out of it, unless you connect it to an external speaker/amp system. On its own, the sound is a little muffled. Again, this isn’t a finely-tuned-for-streaming-Spotify track being played through your Bose noise-cancelling headphones. This is a vinyl. The sound is very vinyl.

There is a 3.55mm male jack into a 2xRCA male audio cable – so you can plug your phone in, if for some reason you wanted to listen to something from your phone through the Crosley Voyager Turntable speaker. But you’ve also got the reverse, allowing you to connect out the sound from the turntable to your TV, to speakers or even a soundbar. Plus, Bluetooth connectivity.

Pairing is super simple: press the Bluetooth button on the turntable and do the same on your device. Only issue is every time the player is switched off, you need to pair again.

The only portable Bluetooth speaker I had laying around was an unused JBL Flip, the OG, so we’re talking circa 2013. Connecting the Crosley Voyager Turntable to the speaker definitely elevated the sound, and despite the speaker being nearly 10 years old, the sound was spectacular. Because it’s a Bluetooth connection, through the speaker you could hear the groves on the record, the crunchiness of the darn thing spinning, and it’s truly a sound that gives you goosebumps. Imagine if I had a proper speaker setup.

While the turntable will play a few standard sizes, anything outside of a standard record width would potentially not fit, as the arm guard is blocking it.

The verdict

The Crosley Voyager Turntable is easy to control, looks adorable and when paired with a speaker, sounds exactly what you want from a vinyl player. It’s not for the vinyl die-hard, but it’s a great piece of kit for someone who wants something that plays vinyls and doesn’t break the bank.

The one we bought is white sand-colored, which is breathtakingly nice with its glossy finish.

However, this cruiser deluxe is available in different color options. Unlike the other Crosley turntables, the cruiser deluxe has curved edges, but not as much as the Discovery turntable.

Further, the sound quality is up to the mark and surely more than what you will pay for it. The dynamic range stereo speakers with this turntable are an amazing feature that will prevent you from carrying additional speakers.

However, if you still want to add some extra punch, you are free to use external speakers by connecting them to the turntable using the RCA cables.

Other than the RCA cables, you can also connect your headphones to this Crosley record player. Further, even if you are getting it for playing your old vinyl records, it has Bluetooth connectivity, so you can connect your mobile phones and play your favorite tracks on them. But, we found this feature useless.

Coming towards its build quality, the build is not that strong, and when it comes to strength, this Crosley Cruiser Deluxe is not our first choice. But, if you have a budget limitation or are sure about the way you will handle it, you can go for it.

Moreover, it wobbles a lot. The platter is not as stable as advertised but still can play tracks with precision, thanks to the belt-driven design.

Besides that, you can play your vinyl records at 33, 45, and 78 RPM speeds, which is a prominent feature if you are a music producer trying to sample old tracks. Hence, if you wish to have an affordable, good-looking turntable with a nice finish that can play your old vinyl records easily, the Cruiser Deluxe is a budget option.

The design of this turntable is pretty minimalist, and people who love everything simple will surely like it. Similar to other Crosley vinyl players, the Voyager model is also available in many color options.

But take note that the price differs according to the outer case. We bought a washed blue Voyager, and it’s truly classic and blends with any background easily. The build is pretty impressive. Unlike the Crosley Deluxe record player, the voyager has a very strong outer case, and the aluminum platter is strong as well.

However, unlike other Crosley turntables, it takes a lot of space. But, it weighs around 5.5 pounds, similar to others, and is lightweight.

Besides its stylish looks and aesthetics, it has a great sound quality. Thanks to its built-in speakers, which are placed in the front and have a loud sound. However, it still has RCA ports, so you can connect external speakers. In case these loudspeakers get damaged, or you want an extra punch.

Other than playing your old vinyl records, you can also play favorite tracks from your phone or other device using Bluetooth connectivity or an AUX port.

Moreover, it has a headphone jack too. So you can listen to your music privately. Like any other Crosley Vinyl player, this one can play your records at three speeds, 33, 45, and 78. These speeds will help you while fast-forwarding the songs or sampling them.

However, the only downfall of this Crosley turntable is that it skips while playing, and we personally have experienced it a few times. To sum up, it’s a good turntable with outstanding features and only one con, so you can go for it.

Here comes the third and the tiniest Crosley record player called Discovery. While writing this Crosley discovery turntable review, we knew that it’s the best of all and perfect for people wanting an inexpensive yet classy-looking suitcase turntable.

Starting with its aesthetics, the looks of these portable record players are pretty exceptional. It has a suitcase-style case with curved edges so kids can freely move around it without you worrying about them.

Further, this discovery turntable has a leather finish and comes in cool color choices such as turquoise, dune, glacier, and many more, which can blend with anything. The build is not as expected and can easily break by falling as it’s made of cheap plastic. However, you can handle it with the utmost care. You can go for it.

Coming towards the sound quality of Discovery, it’s decent, not too good and not too bad, and perfect according to its price range. You can use it right out of the box as it doesn’t require any setup other than plugging it into an electric source.

The price range we mentioned is not absolute, but it is more or less the general price range of these categories.

The features of these three Crosley turntables are the same such as connectivity options, inputs, pitch controller, number of speeds, and many more. However, the only difference is that the Cruiser Deluxe doesn’t have AUX connectivity, and the other two have it.

Build quality

Out of these three, we found the voyager has the best build. Unlike the Cruiser Deluxe and Discovery, the voyager is somewhat sturdy. However, all three have average build quality.

Portability

All of them have a weight of 5.50 pounds, but they differ in their build. The Crosley Discovery takes the smallest space, while the voyager is a bigger turntable and cannot accommodate small spaces. Further, the Cruiser Deluxe is a mid-sized turntable.

With aesthetics, all three are great. They are available in many color options and have a great finish. According to our choice, we go for the Discovery for its impressively good looks with a leather finish. However, the voyager and the Cruiser Deluxe are also great.

Sound quality

As the sound quality is considered, Crosley is not our first choice because the sound quality is not satisfactory. However, if you still want to have one of these three, go for the voyager. It wobbles less than compared to the others and has a decent sound quality.

Comparing all three Crosley turntables was hard, but still, we enjoyed working with them. All of them come from the same brand and have similar features. Yet, there are some unsaid features or drawbacks which you cannot know before buying.

After Seeing It All Over Instagram, I Finally Gave the Crosley Record Player a Try

I love a good Spotify playlist , but there's nothing this old soul enjoys more than kicking back at home, a record playing in the background. In the past year, I've accumulated some of my favorite records , from iconic artists like Sam Cooke and Nina Simone. There's something so special about putting it on after carefully choosing it from a local vintage store. I live for these music and wine nights at home.

In an attempt to bring that familiar feeling to the office space I frequently use, I set out to get a new record player. Without any research, I went for the Crosley Voyager Turntable ($70), which I had long been seeing Instagram ads for. It looked so aesthetically pleasing, I figured it would also double as decor.

It arrived in great condition, but the hue looked a lot paler than captured online (more of a lavender than bright pink shade). Still, that didn't bother me because it blended with my earthy decor theme . I placed it on the credenza, and put it to the test immediately.

The one slight con is that the sound could be improved a bit. The turntable was a bit wobbly once the music came on, which caused the plastic needle to lightly scratch the record, and skip a few sounds. That said, the sound quality is a lot better if you switch to Bluetooth mode and link it to your Amazon Echo, and when the device is in an enclosed space.

Overall, if you're on the market for a decorative turntable for occasional plays, you might feel satisfied with it. The performance is in line with the more affordable price tag. The good news is, it comes with a one-year warranty, so you can experience it at your own pace and make an informed decision.

An attractive retro-looking record player, the Crosley Voyager is sadly let down by the quality of its in-built speakers. For those with external speakers on hand who only want to use it as a vinyl player, however, it's a solid budget option.

With the vinyl revolution showing no signs of disappearing, we're now flooded with stylish and affordable record players aiming to entice both those who want to adopt the format and anyone who has been inspired to dust off their old collection. But not all of these products, which undoubtedly look beautiful, are great at delivering the audio quality that many would expect.

We've tested a few of these sub-$100 record players to see whether they're really worth the cash, and there has been mixed results. The latest product to be examined is the Crosley Voyager, which has made its presence known with a huge array of fun and colorful finishes.

What does the Crosley Voyager look like in the home?

The Crosley Voyager has a very appealing retro look with its distinctive suitcase-esque design that requires you to unclip the metal latches on the sides to open it up. This means that as good as the record player looks when open and in use, it also looks super-stylish when closed. 

Once open, you'll find a large logo on the inside of the lid, which we think adds to, rather than subtracts from, the overall visual style. As with most compact vinyl players, records will hand over the edges when placed on the turntable, so you won't be able to close the lid when it is in use.

The speaker output is located on the front in the form of a white plastic grille, which looks a little on the cheaper side when viewed up close but blends with the rest of the finish at a distance. The rest of the player has a leather effect, ours with a lovely sage green color.

How easy is it to set up the Crosley Voyager?

There is very little to do before you can get started with the Crosley Voyager. Once you have unpacked the items from the box, you will need to insert the power cord and turn the volume knob (this also controls turning the player on and off). Then, remove the stylus protector and tie from the tonearm.

To play a record using the in-built speakers, you want the function switch turned to PHONO and the correct speed (33 1/3, 45, or 78 RPM) selected. Release the tonearm clip and use the level to lift it up. Move the arm to the correct position above the record (which should already be spinning), and use the lever to lower it onto the disc. That's it!

How does the Crosley Voyager perform?

While using the Crosley Voyager, it quickly becomes clear that the record player has been designed for slightly younger music fans just getting into vinyl for the first time. The vintage style appeals to the same demographic, with an aesthetic that would look great on a side table storage cart even if it was never used to play music.

That's not to say that this would be its fate in most homes. The Voyager is an easy-to-use record player than adds the convenience of having a two-way Bluetooth system, but there is a little bit of style over substance here. The speakers just aren't up to the standard many audiophiles would want, and we doubt many people would use it as a standalone Bluetooth speaker.

Thankfully there's a way around this, and you can connect the Voyager to external speakers to enjoy your albums to their full potential. You can do this with either the RCA connections at the back of the player or via Bluetooth to another wireless speaker nearby. Would we recommend the Crosley Voyager?

The Crosley Voyager appears to have a very specific demographic in mind, with a lovely and very on-trend design that fits in nicely with the tastes of many new vinyl fans (like this writer). With a ton of colors and patterns to choose from and a deceptively luxe-looking finish for such a budget-friendly product, the only thing that lets it down is the quality of the in-built speakers. Still, if you're keen on the look and ease of use here, then you can always connect up some external speakers.

When I first started collecting records, I did a lot of research about what would be considered a good beginner turntable. I had about $150 to work with, but I knew I needed to spend somewhere under that to ensure that I could grab a couple records to play on the turntable.

The more I looked, the more I saw the name Crosley , which to me was a sign that a lot of people own and love this brand. The fact of the matter is that Crosley is the most divisive name in vinyl today, garnishing endless criticism from seasoned record collecting veterans and constant flack for a number of aspects of their specifications and abilities as record players.

There’s no denying the popularity of Crosley turntables in today’s vinyl resurgence , but just as sure as the brand has been central to millenials picking up turntables for the first time, so has the criticism behind the company’s ability to produce quality technology. The popularity versus quality debate surrounding Crosley can be confusing: how can something that is so popular be so negatively regarded by the people that supposedly know best ?

Well, that’s what we’re going to breakdown today, especially as I provide you with my list of the best Crosley record players with built-in speakers.   And, to better help you determine the right record player for you, please take a look at the interactive table below.

The Appeal of Crosley Record Players

Well, that’s the thing. The different coalitions within the vinyl community have very different interests and points of concern. For someone looking for build-in speakers, portability, and a good deal, Crosley is hard to beat.

Fans of vinyl that have been around the block and have moved to spending more money on their setups are exposing themselves to a higher level of quality, and therefore, different concerns. Things like tonearm weight, pressure, and stylus quality don’t mean as much to someone starting a record collection, nor does that mean that those things have to be kept in mind if you want to play and buy vinyl records.

The fact of the matter is, like most hobbies or interests, you should experience vinyl and turntables your way, meaning that if you’re concerned with a low price tag while maintaining quality and accessibility, Crosley is a great place to look. I started my turntable experience with a Crosley table, and I still have it to this day.

I’ve spent a lot of time with Crosley tables and I’m happy to say that there are a lot of great options from Crosley that can give you a great quality listening set-up as well as leave you some cash to pick up actual records to spin! As we look at a few of these Crosley tables, we’ll be keeping a few things in mind. Our points of interest with Crosley tables that have built-in speakers will be:

The Best Crosley Turntables with Built In Speakers

Let’s begin this list with arguably the most popular Crosley of them all—the Crosley Cruiser.

Crosley Cruiser

The Crosley Cruiser Portable Turntable is probably the most iconic table that Crosley is developing today. The Cruiser’s built-in speakers are encased within a suitcase-style shell, exemplifying its portability and compact design. For many, the Cruiser serves as their first turntable, leading to a deeper love and appreciation for turntables and vinyl records.

The Crosley Cruiser itself is vinyl-wrapped to give it a great texture and increased durability. The belt-drive design of the table is typical for most belt-driven turntables, making it a great choice for those just getting started. The tone arm of the Cruiser is manual, meaning you’ll have to place the needle on and off your records by hand, but to be honest, it’s not like that’s a difficult feat to accomplish.

he Cruiser has dual stereo speakers, ensuring a high quality listening experience despite its compact design. The turntable itself doesn’t get terribly loud before sounding as if it’s being pushed to its limits, but it does work great for an office or bedroom.

As mentioned, a major pro to the Cruiser model is its portability. Suitcase-style turntables get their name from literally being able to be contained in a suitcase-style casing, handle and all. If you’re taking your new Crosley to a friend’s place, you can literally hold everything but the AC adapter that powers the table in a light, compact manner thanks to its design.

If you plan on only listening alone, and you’re worried about disturbing others, a headphone jack allows for a more personal listening experience, and if you’re wanting to listen to something you don’t have on vinyl, you can play sound from external devices by plugging them in directly to the Cruiser.

• Verdict: The Crosley Cruiser plays at three speeds: 33 ⅓, 45, and 78 RPM. Coupled with the ability to plug in a phone or MP3 player, this table does it all, and in a compact, concise manner. The Cruiser is a great place to start if you’re just diving into the world of vinyl.

Crosley Spinnerette

For someone looking for the Cruiser’s portability and the Player’s design, a wonderful middle ground exists in the Spinnerette. While this turntable sports the portable suitcase-style design, it’s much more retro-looking, with an entire right portion of the cabinet designed to look like the head of a speaker. When closed, this Crosley favorite looks like any other portable table, but if you open it up and spin your favorite record on it, you’ll be blown away at the punch that this table packs.

The diamond stylus needle and belt-drive mechanism make this table reliable and impressive given its size. The turntable is made out of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, better known as a thermoplastic polymer, meaning its meant to resist heat in order to ensure the hardware inside stays safe while you’re on the go.

The Spinnerette also features an aluminum grill that is equal parts practical and attractive. The turntable also offers the similar Crosley specs, such as three speed playback, dynamic stereo speakers, and plug-and-play capabilities.

An added bonus to the Spinnerette is the ability to rip music from a record to your laptop or computer. A USB drive allows for storage devices to be inserted and pull audio, which can then be saved as an MP3 for playback on players and phones. The ability to go digital with your vinyl records means even if you don’t feel like bringing the turntable somewhere, your music can go where you go.

• Verdict: The Crosley Spinnerette is retro and modern at the same time. Its throwback design and MP3 ripping capabilities make it a great option for people looking to digitize their record collection while also having a great manner in which to listen to their collection the old-fashion way. 

Crosley CR42C

When turntables began popping back up in vogue, the Musician Entertainment Center (or Crosley CR42C)) was a popular set-up, seeing as it embodied Crosley’s great built-in speaker design as well as a classic style that was reminiscent of old radio cabinets. Luckily, Crosley has continued to improve on the MEC, and that means more options for listening than ever.

The MEC is an all wood-style turntable. You may not be able to pick this up by a handle and take it places, but you won’t want it leaving your house because this stylish piece looks great as part of a living room configuration. I always suggest people that like early to mid century design should pick this table up.

Three speed listening options as well as a belt-drive mechanism means you can listen to records, but the MEC doesn’t stop there. Yes, there’s a radio with AM and FM capabilities. Yes, you can plug in a phone or MP3. What separates the MEC is the ability to play cassettes and CDs.

Function select buttons that fit in nicely with the MEC’s design allow you to seamlessly switch from a tape to the radio, and from your phone to a record. The MEC works for you, and it’s great having so many options at your disposal. Recently, the MEC also added bluetooth capabilities, meaning cords are no longer a necessity for your phone. With its fuller cabinet and body, the MEC has a great sound to it, and fills up a room nicely.

• Verdict: One of my favorite Crosley turntables, the Musician Entertainment Center allows for endless ways to play music and media. Records from all times, as well as CDs and cassettes, have their place in this table. And all for under $200!

Crosley Bound

If you’ve been thinking throughout this article that you’re in need of something with a bit more of a punch, the Crosley Bound is the table for you . A suitcase-style design is great here, but it’s much larger than the Cruiser. The larger body on the Bound means that concerns about volume are no longer a factor. The Bound isn’t necessarily hard to carry despite its size, and the handle mechanism allows for pick-up-and-go listening, much like the portable Cruiser.

Other specs of the Bound are similar to the Cruiser. Like Crosley players largely are, the Bound is designed to play three speeds, support external speakers, and an added bonus, accept a bluetooth connection as well as play through an auxiliary cord. The difference here though, again, is the sound. The volume of the Bound, as well as its fuller cabinet size, makes this a more serious table than the Cruiser. If you’re looking to spin records for friends in a larger space, this is a good option.

• Verdict : Think of the Crosley Bound as the Crusier’s bigger, badder, louder brother. The Bound is meant for people looking to kick out the jams, whether they’re on vinyl or bluetooth.

Crosley is a brand I tend to defend endlessly. From this list, you can see all they have to offer, and its clear to see that your listening goals for a turntable are probably found in one of these tables. These are my favorite when someone is looking for a beginner record player or if they just want to try something new that does a lot for a little. Happy spinning!

Crosley CR-6017

The Crosley Player is a turntable with style in mind. The large base to the system makes it look like a piece of supporting furniture fit for any modern home or apartment. The stylistic design of the Player is deliberate and sleek, meaning that you’ll enjoy looking at this Crosley just as much as you will listening to records on it.

A review of the Crosley Player needs to start with its design. The table itself is silver on top and in front, with a wood-colored paneling on the side reminiscent of turntable rigs in the 1960s and 1970s. Think Don Draper from Mad Men kicking his feet up to “Tomorrow Never Knows” level class and sophistication.

A diamond needle stylus is an upgrade from the Cruiser’s specs, as well as the Player’s integration of clear dust cover that can be removed if you wished. The Player has an RCA output for external speakers, as well as input options for plug-and-play with MP3s and phones. Three speed record playback is available as well, with the added bonus of an AM/FM radio that can be tuned from the display on the front of the cabinet.

• Verdict: Dynamic stereo speakers and a larger base make the Crosley Player a turntable you won’t need to upgrade any time soon. For $100, you get a great turntable and a statement piece for your living room or den.

Naturally, everyone thought we were nuts. But now, after 30+ years of bringing stylish music to the people, we manufacture the turntables, radios, and accessories that help everyone discover their own music.

Discovering or rediscovering your love for vinyl has to start somewhere, so Crosley built a vintage-inspired portable turntable with all the features you need to easily get started while keeping your budget in mind. This three-speed (33 1/3, 45, 78 RPM) portable turntable is ready to play right out of the box. The built-in stereo speakers allow you to just plug and play, but there are RCA outputs if you want to hook the discovery up to a receiver or larger speakers. Other features include pitch control to fine-tune the speed of the record, aux in and a built-in Bluetooth receiver allowing you to stream your digital music through the turntable's speakers. You’ve probably seen a Crosley Cruiser turntable on the high street. Whether it’s at John Lewis, sitting next to a wall of freshly pressed records at Urban Outfitters, or online at Amazon, these vintage-looking portable turntables are very popular indeed.

They couldn’t be simpler to operate, they look great fun and the eye-catching retro styling of the suitcase is certainly appealing to first time buyers. But are they any good?

Ease of use

The Cruiser is as plug-and-play as a turntable gets. Open the lid, place a record on the platter, pop the arm on the record, and off you go. It’s easy to get enamoured by the world of vinyl through such a trendy and easy-to-use product.

But if you’re really serious about playing records, we can’t recommend the Crosley Cruiser. For one, the tinny sound quality is hardly worth paying the sub-£100 price.

More worryingly, though, the Cruiser will wear your records down faster than a typical turntable, due to an unusually high tracking weight on the cartridge. The weight cannot be adjusted either.

Build and design

Looking at the Cruiser, it’s easy to see why they’re selling like hotcakes. We like the suitcase design and its bright finish. Our review sample came in orange, but you can choose from black, turquoise, red, pink and blue. The wooden and leatherette build is surprisingly robust, too.

This is a fully portable system, with two speakers (driven by a 3W amp) built into the case – you can see the grilles on the front of the unit. Once open (the locks are satisfyingly sturdy), the Cruiser has all the necessities – a tonearm, cartridge and mat all placed neatly inside.

The tonearm is securely held, and while the build quality is mostly decent for the money, attention to detail is poor. There’s a lot of play in the arm bearing, which doesn’t inspire confidence.

We measured the downforce on the Crosley Cruiser’s cartridge at just over 7g (typically, it’s around 2.5g on most decks), and this heavy burden will introduce wear on your records over time. Unfortunately, there’s no scope for adjustment on the arm at all.

Features and connectivity

The Cruiser has three speed controls - 33 ⅓, 45 and 78 rpm, with a separate adjustment included for singles. On the turntable, you’ll find a dial for power and controlling the volume. It’s responsive and smooth to operate.

Around the back of the unit, you’ll find the power plug, a pair of RCA analogue outputs to feed the turntable into your main hi-fi system, and a 3.5mm input for plugging in iPods and music players.

There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack near the volume control too. It’s a decent spread of features for a budget turntable that does it all.

At this price, we aren’t expecting a fully rounded and insightful sound from the Crosley, but the bright and tinny sound is still a disappointment.

We play a range of records from Duran Duran’s Notorious and ABBA’s Should I Laugh Or Cry to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana .

Voices are shrill, and there’s not enough resolution to hear deeper into the mix. There’s a tune in there, but no enjoyment to be had from it.

It’s the same presentation whether you’re listening to vinyl or playing a Spotify playlist through your iPhone 6S . Through headphones, the sound is hazy and noisy – we actually prefer listening through the speakers.

A bit more body and weight, and things would be better. But the built-in speakers are hardly capable of delivering a detailed and dynamic sound, let alone do any better than the worst flatscreen TV speakers.

It’s a shame, as we really wanted to like this portable turntable – it’s such a lovely thing.

We really wanted the Crosley Cruiser to perform well; as an idea it’s great, and anything that makes vinyl more accessible and gets people interested is a good thing in our books. But the product has to deliver. The Cruiser’s tracking weight is a serious issue, and the turntable’s speakers are a disappointment.

Both you and your record collection deserve better.
