Travel And Tell

What’s So Special About Enid, Oklahoma?

Firefly mural Enid OK

I’m so glad you asked! We have visited Enid, Oklahoma multiple times for years. We are happy to share with you some special things that we have discovered about Enid and the people there.

Drawing visitors from all over right now, is the 140 foot Christmas Tree. The One, the Christ Tree, is on display in the public space in front of the convention center downtown. It is the largest fresh cut Christmas Tree in the world!

Arch and 12 foot trees surrounding world's tallest tree Enid OK

We followed the story, and it’s journey to Enid, on their website and on their Facebook page.  From being cut in California, arriving in Enid, the setting up and  lighting; it was all documented with live FB videos. The idea, birthed by Kyle and Carol Williams, to bring the largest fresh cut Christmas Tree to Enid to be the center of a community effort of celebrating, acknowledging and proclaiming the The One true God, the reason for the season, is in full swing.

The 1st weekend in December, we were able to see it in person .  It was incredible. The tree will be milled and donated to local charities after Jan 6th. So, hopefully you can see it before then.

The One, Christ Tree, 140 ft tall, World's Largest Enid OK

Holiday Activities

While you are admiring the Christmas Tree, you can enjoy the skating rink that is set up for the season, food trucks, ride in the lighted holiday truck and so much more downtown.

Skaters enjoying seasonal ice rink Enid OK

Stride Bank Center

The Convention Center, known as the Stride Bank Center, is much more incredible than anything my city (twice the size) has. Not only is this event center equipped with large conference and banquet rooms, but it also encompasses an indoor arena.

As you might guess, lots of big name concerts are held here with a past performers list including Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, Jamey Johnson, Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire, the Beach boys, Little Big Town, Chris Stapleton, Darius Rucker and more.

We attended a Styx concert in the arena a few years ago. Cirque Musica Holiday is coming up quickly. Three Dog Night and even Dancing With the Stars Live Tour is performing here in 2022.

Downtown Enid

Downtown is where you will find the convention center along with much much more. There is a new GLō Best Western hotel that has opened in the last six months. The hotel’s parking lot connects to Stride Bank Center’s parking lot. In the blocks surrounding, you will find Enid Public Library, a variety of shops, restaurants, Enid Brewing Co, the post office and courthouse.

New Glo Best Western Enid OK

The courthouse, Garfield County Clerk,  is a cool building. It has an attached clock tower. I love the clock tower and what it ads to this building with its nice simple design.

Courthouse with clock tower Enid OK

The Enid Public Library, several of the bank buildings and even one church I noticed, have an Art Deco architectural design.  The 14 story Broadway Tower is an iconic Art Deco building in the middle of one of Enid’s downtown blocks. Makes for an interesting downtown with traditional and Art Deco architecture variations.

Broadway Tower Enid OK

Downtown Enid is very walkable and you will find plenty here to keep occupied. If you prefer,  downtown is also very drivable with two-way streets and plenty of pull in parking in front of shops and restaurants.

Museums in Enid

You might be surprised at how many museums Enid has, considering that it’s a town of only 50,000 or so. With its rich history, you’ll find museums regarding early settlers, the railroad and even a children’s museum.

The Native American Cultural History runs deep in Oklahoma if you’ve ever studied it. Enid has Southern Heights Cultural Center with Native American exhibits. The Cherokee Strip Regional Herritage Center is a more expansive museum for event coverage beginning with 1893 Land Run.

Southern Heights East Park near Cultural Center

Simpson’s Old Time Museum focuses on all things western including old western film sets. Maybe that’s not surprising since it has an on-site production company.

Simpson’s Old Time Museum Enid OK

Railroad Museum of Oklahoma is a very special place to learn about the history of the American rail system. Conductor Frank “Watermelon” Campbell was still giving daily tours until his death in January 2021 at the age of 99! His wife is still carrying on his dream, opening the museum Tuesday through Saturday.

Railroad Museum of Oklahoma Enid

Midgley Museum has you covered if artifacts, rocks and minerals peak your interest. This museum is located in the rock house just behind Champlin Park. Northwest Oklahoma Masonic Lodges operate this museum.

For a hands-on, children’s learning museum, check out Leonardo’s Children’s Museum and it’s outdoor science playground, Adventure Quest.

Leonardo's Children's Museum Enid

Besides the three-story wooden castle, another thing that makes this playground very special is that it was built by 12,000 volunteers and it has remained the world’s largest community built outdoor playground since it opened in 1996.

Murals/Public Art Enid OK

One of my favorite things to do is check out the local art, especially Murals, while we are traveling. And it has no shortage as talented artist painted in Murals on its buildings. Several of these have very unique stories of inspiration behind them.

Mural downtown Enid OK

Along with the murals, you will find quite a few statues around Enid. Several that we saw on our recent visit include The Homesteaders and Boomer.

The art installation at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Community with the unbroken circle is intriguing. I would love to know more about it.

Under Her Wing was the Universe, created by Romy Owens encompasses 2.5 acres of native prairie land and a large sculptured pavilion with the convention center as a backdrop. At nite the pavilion (envision as a wing) has lighted stars (envision as the universe) that have been named and purchased by donors helping to fund this massive art installation. The prairie land, with native flowers, is a development in progress that will result in a beautiful daytime or nighttime experience.

Under Her Wing Was The Universe

Blooming Buddy Bison by Pam Kirkham and commissioned by the Harris Foundation was wearing a Christmas wreath when we visited Enid in December. How do I know that all of the balloons painted on the white bison were Oklahoma State symbols, I would have looked at all sides more closely.

For information on these, plus  many other murals and art installations in Enid, click here for VisitEnid.org Public Art page.

Church Architecture

Some of the churches that stood out, as we were driving around downtown Enid, include The First Presbyterian Church with it’s beautiful double tower design. This church was constructed 1894-1906. It’s outstanding.

First Presbyterian Church Enid Oklahoma

The Gothic style St Francis Xavier Catholic Church also has a Catholic School on the property. St Joseph’s Catholic School reopened in 2000 after being closed for a number of years. Currently, they have Pre-K through 5th grade. The church also operates “Our Daily Bread” soup kitchen, with volunteers, 5 days a week. Sounds like, not only does their church building stand out, but also the hearts of the members.

Dining Options Enid

Whether you were downtown or out and about, and it has tons of dining options to choose from. Around the convention center and Main Street are variety of great options like Callahan’s, Napoli’s,  Café Garcia and Sandy’s Tacos. Brick Oven Pizzeria and The Youngblood Grille sound great too! Shopping Around Enid

There are lots of shops around downtown with front door parking and convenient to walk to if you’re staying downtown. End it is large enough that it has all the typical chains that we seem to frequent-Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx, Ulta, Old Navy, etc. The Modern Thread is one of our daughter’s favorite stores.  I had a chance to go visit with the owner, Whitney,  and check out her shop on our last visit. I can see why it’s a favorite boutique and also discovered that she carries clothing for guys as well.

The People of Enid

We’ve always known that ended had some very special people.  We’ve met many of them during the almost decade that our daughter and son-in-law have lived in Enid. This year we were fortunate enough to attend the Junior Welfare League’s Gala, that our daughter was honored to chair, and met even more of them. I was amazed at The involvement and generosity of hundreds of people that participated in the event.  There were many individuals and businesses that joined forces with our daughter to help make her vision a reality. The event and the people were top-notch and pulled of a fun and successful fundraiser for some very worthwhile organizations that help Enid locally.

This is my recap as we arrived in Enid and watched the progress of ‘A Night In Tinseltown’ come together and joined as attendees.

More tornadoes are possible Tuesday after powerful storms left at least 1 person dead in Oklahoma

From CNN's Robert Shackelford

Emergency crew members assess damage in Barnsdall, Oklahoma.

Powerful storms moved through Oklahoma late Monday night, including a powerful tornado that hit Barnsdall, Oklahoma, where extensive damage and at least one death was reported.

The severe storm threat is ongoing across the Central US Tuesday, with the strongest storms expected across the Ohio Valley, but storms are possible from Texas to Pennsylvania.

Here are some forecast details:

  • Tornado watches are ongoing Tuesday across the Central US, including in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas until 5 a.m. CT and in parts of Illinois and Missouri until 8 a.m. CT.
  • Indiana, northern Kentucky and western Ohio are facing a level 3 of 5 severe storm threat, with tornadoes, large hail and severe winds possible. The cities of Columbus, Cincinnati and Lexington are included in the threat area.
  • A level 2 of 5 severe storm threat spreads from northeastern Arkansas to southern Michigan, including Chicago and Nashville, where people could see large hail, damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes.
  • A level 1 of 5 severe storm threat stretches from Texas to Wisconsin, extending east to Pennsylvania, with large hail and damaging winds expected.

Nearly 200 storm reports were made across the US on Monday

Nearly 190 storm reports were made across the US on Monday, according to the Storm Prediction Center, including the tornado that hit Barnsdall, Oklahoma, leaving at least one person dead and extensive damage.

There were more than 100 high wind gust reports, with the most notable being an 82 mph gust reported in Chester, Oklahoma.

So far, there have been more than 70 large hail reports, with the most notable being a hail report of 4 inches in diameter reported in Moonlight, Kansas.

More than 7 million people remain under tornado watches at this time across parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.

Natural gas leak reported in hard-hit Oklahoma city as rescue crews face impassable roads

From CNN's Joe Sutton

Authorities in Osage County, Oklahoma, are responding to a gas leak after a tornado struck the area, damaging dozens of homes, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said.

In the city of Barnsdall, several roads have been closed due to fallen debris as emergency crews work to evacuate residents and carry out rescues, the department said in a release.

"Crews from the numerous jurisdictions are responding to assist with medical transport, traffic and perimeter control, and search and rescue," it added.

Several other counties in the region have reported flooded roads, power outages and damage to homes, barns and other community buildings, the release said.

Nearly 100 million people are under severe storm threat across the East on Tuesday

CNN Weather

After a night of severe storms brought tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain across parts of the Central US, the severe storm threat heads to more populated areas of the East on Tuesday.

Nearly 100 million people from Texas to Pennsylvania are under a severe storm threat, Tuesday, though the Ohio Valley is likely to see the worst of the storms, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

The strongest threat, level 3 of 5, covers most of Indiana, as well as northern Kentucky and western Ohio. The area includes Indianapolis, Columbus and Cincinnati in Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky.

"A few tornadoes, potentially strong, large to very large hail, and severe/damaging winds all appear possible" in the region, the Storm Prediction Center warns.

The area surrounding this region is under a less severe, level 2 of 5, threat, which stretches from the northeastern tip of Arkansas to southern Michigan, including Chicago and Nashville.

This area could also see isolated tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind gusts.

A much larger area extending from Texas to Wisconsin and east into Pennsylvania is under a low risk, level 1 of 5 of severe storms, including hail and strong winds. Cities in the area include Dallas, Austin, Detroit, Memphis, Birmingham, Charlotte and Pittsburgh.

On Wednesday, the storms will continue to soak the East from the southern Plains into the mid-Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys, the prediction center forecasts.

"All severe hazards, including tornadoes, very large hail, and severe/damaging winds should occur. Some of the tornadoes may be strong," the prediction center said.

1 person dead and multiple injured following powerful Oklahoma tornado

From CNN’s Joe Sutton

Emergency responders work amid storm damage in Barnsdall, Oklahoma.

At least one person is dead and several others are injured after dangerous storms churned up a tornado in Osage County, Oklahoma, Monday night.

“There’s a lot of damage between Bartlesville and Barnsdall along the path of the tornado, a lot of houses damaged -- some completely torn up. We’ve got one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries,” Osage County Sheriff Eddie Virden said in an on-air interview with CNN affiliate KOKI .

Residents in the area were already recovering from another tornado that hit Barnsdall just over a month ago

“Basically, the tornado took the same path that it did through Barnsdall several weeks ago,” the sheriff said.

Videos show homes ripped apart by tornado in Barnsdall, Oklahoma

From CNN's Amanda Jackson and Elizabeth Wolfe

Ground footage shows the damage in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, after a tornado hit the area.

A tornado tore a path of destruction through the city of Barnsdall, Oklahoma, Monday night, ripping apart homes, downing power lines and burying cars under tree limbs, video taken by a storm chaser shows.

Winds were powerful enough to flip a large RV upside down and rip massive chunks of roof off several homes, the video shows. Some walls and ceilings are collapsed completely.

At least one building was reduced to a pile of twisted metal and wooden beams. Elsewhere, residents surveyed tangled piles of debris and belongings blanketing the yard outside a home.

Residents stepped over downed power lines as they helped loved ones safely out of damaged homes and carried their pets through the damp streets as emergency crew vehicles lined the roads.

Tornado watch issued for parts of Illinois and Missouri

A tornado watch has been issued for parts of western Illinois and eastern Missouri until 8 a.m. CDT.

More than 3 million people live in the area covered by the watch, which includes St. Louis, Missouri.

Storms could unleash a few tornadoes, scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph and large hail to 1 inch in diameter.

Several tornado watches are currently in effect across the Central US, including parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and Iowa.

Tornado strength is rated on the EF Scale. Here's what that means

From CNN's Madison Richardson

The National Weather Service rates the strength of tornadoes using the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale , which ranks tornadoes from 0 to 5 by assessing damage and determining wind speed.

cruise night enid oklahoma

Here's the damage associated with each level:

EF0: 65- to 85-mph wind gusts

These tornadoes are the least destructive and typically break tree branches, damage road signs and push over small, shallow-rooted trees.

EF1 : 86- to 110-mph wind gusts

With similar wind speeds to  weak hurricanes , these tornadoes can push moving cars off course, shift mobile homes from their foundations and remove roof surfaces.

EF2 : 111- to 135-mph wind gusts

Significant damage starts to emerge from these tornadoes, which can snap or uproot trees, destroy mobile homes and tear roofs completely off homes.

They also can pick up small objects and turn them into dangerous projectiles.

EF3 : 136- to 165-mph wind gusts

These tornadoes produce severe damage, uprooting nearly all trees in their path, blowing over large vehicles like trains and buses and significantly damaging buildings.

Less than 5% of all tornadoes are rated EF3 or higher.

EF4 : 166- to 200-mph wind gusts

Easily destroying homes, tossing cars and downing large trees, these tornadoes can be devastating.

EF5 : 200+-mph wind gusts

These monsters cause complete devastation, flattening nearly everything in their path.

They are rare, with only 59 have been recorded in the United States since 1950, according to the  Storm Prediction Center .

Holdenville April 27 tornado outbreak

Authorities are still assessing damage. Below is what we know about Oklahoma's tornado outbreak on April 27.

Authorities confirmed that at least four people died because of Saturday night's tornado outbreak across Oklahoma.

Hughes County Emergency management has confirmed early Sunday morning that two people, including a 4-month-old, had died. The child died after an overnight search. The 4-month-old was eventually found and taken to a hospital but did not make it.

The adult Holdenville victim was identified as Jimmy Johnson.

Officials said a search-and-rescue mission was underway Sunday morning at a sports bar in downtown Sulphur. Oklahoma Highway Patrol says at least one person was unaccounted for.

During a news conference, Gov. Kevin Stitt confirmed that a woman's body was removed from the debris near a bar in downtown Sulphur. The victim has been identified as Sheila Goodman.

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management and Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials confirmed a man in a semi-trailer died after the storms knocked over the vehicle on Interstate 35 in Marietta. An Oklahoma Highway Patrol collision report did not release the man's name.

Number of injuries reported

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency management said the Oklahoma State Department of Health reported almost 300 injuries. Below is a breakdown of injuries reported to Oklahoma hospitals.

  • 62 Cut/Pierce
  • 7 Poisoning

Number of tornadoes

The National Weather Service say an initial survey confirmed that at least 22 tornadoes touched down during the state's outbreak on Saturday. The NWS continues to survey reported tornadoes, and that number may increase.

Tornado damage

An EF-3 tornado was confirmed in Sulphur. Further investigation is necessary to determine if the rating will go higher, according to the National Weather Service.

In Marietta, preliminary reports rated the tornado an EF-4, but it could be higher. An EF-0 was reported in both Stillwater and Newkirk.

The National Weather Service says the Marietta tornado is the first tornado to produce EF-4 damage in Oklahoma since May 9, 2016.

Storm damage has been reported from northern Oklahoma down to the Red River.

Gov. Kevin Stitt declares state of emergency

Gov. Kevin Stitt issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Carter, Cotton, Garfield, Hughes, Kay, Lincoln, Love, Murray, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Payne and Pontotoc counties.

"Due to impacts from severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, hail, and flooding beginning April 27, 2024 including extensive damage to power lines and infrastructure, it is necessary to assist and expedite all efforts of relief," Stitt said in the executive order.

The state of emergency will remain in effect for 30 days.

"My prayers are with those who lost loved ones as tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma last night. Thank you to Oklahoma Emergency Management and those who have worked through the night to keep Oklahomans safe and have worked to clear debris and assess damage," Stitt said in a statement on the tornadoes.

Individuals looking for ways to help can make donations to Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief to help storm victims and relief efforts at www.okdisasterhelp.org/donate .

The Salvation Army is also providing first responders in Murray County with meals.

Red Cross storm shelters

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Crossway Church, located at 2108 W. Broadway Ave. in Sulphur. The Murray County Sheriff's Office also designated the church as a reunification center for people looking for loved ones.

Everyone is welcome at the Red Cross shelter, and they said 25 residents stayed overnight.

Red Cross is also opening another shelter in Ardmore on Sunday at the Christ Community Church, which is located at 2620 Mount Washington Road.

Walmart Foundation Relief

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have committed $250,000 in product donations and grants to organizations providing relief in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa.

In Sulphur, the Walmart-funded Operation BBQ Relief mobile kitchen will provide meals on April 30 and May 1 at the Walmart Supercenter at 2705 Broadway Ave. Meal distribution will be at noon and 4 p.m. while supplies last.

Response from lawmakers

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt held a news conference in Sulphur, where he said the damage was the most extensive he has seen since becoming governor.

Oklahoma Rep. Tom Cole released a statement on the tornadoes that ripped through the state.

“My thoughts are with those who have been affected by or have suffered a loss as a result of the terrible tornadoes that swept through Oklahoma last night. I would also like to thank our first responders who have been on the ground responding so nobly. My office and I are monitoring the situation closely and will help to ensure that the necessary assistance is made available,” Cole said.

Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall, who also spoke at a news conference alongside Stitt in Sulphur, released a statement on the storms.

"My prayers go out to the citizens of Sulphur, all of Murray County and those across the State of Oklahoma affected by the severe weather this weekend. As our neighbors survey the damage and begin to rebuild, my office is available to provide individuals and businesses with guidance on how to access necessary resources. Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can provide assistance throughout the cleanup and rebuilding process," McCall said.

State Superintendent Ryan Walters said he is implementing a full-scale response to Saturday night's storms.

“I have directed the full resources of our agency to provide operational and academic support to all districts affected by last night’s storms,” said Walters in a statement. “Oklahomans are strong and resilient people. My prayers are with our people, and our actions will support them. My office will do everything possible to help our friends, neighbors, and students through this time of crisis.”

OSDE is in contact with affected districts around the state to:

  • Provide waivers or extensions for testing, expedite claims, provide exemptions for any requirements, and extend any deadlines necessary.
  • Make available the OSDE crisis response team to any district needing additional support or resources.
  • Deploy additional OSDE staff to substitute in districts with teachers who need to attend to any personal losses and challenges.
  • Reach out to families who receive support from SoonerStart to ensure continuity of services for infants and toddlers.
  • Utilize any other OSDE resources to be made available to students and districts in need.

Price gouging law in effect

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced the Emergency Price Stabilization Act is in effect in the 12 counties hit hard by the weekend's storms. The law prohibits an increase of more than 10% for the price of goods and services to help protect citizens from unfair price hikes.

“Our prayers are with the communities that have experienced such tragic loss and now face the hard work of recovery,” Drummond said in a statement. “In the aftermath of these devastating storms, unscrupulous actors should know that my office will absolutely not tolerate exorbitant prices on goods and services desperately needed by Oklahomans during this difficult time.”

Drummond said citizens should be on the lookout for contractor fraud in the impacted areas and to report suspected fraud by calling 833-681-1895.

OG&E update

OG&E officials said this weekend's storm damage included more than 350 broken poles. So far, 500 cross arms, 75 transformers and more than 60,000 feet of overhead line have been replaced.

OG&E customers are advised to:
