British Masters: Thorbjorn Olesen makes eagle-birdie finish to snatch dramatic win at The Belfry

Olesen secured a sixth DP World Tour victory and first since 2018 after an incredible eagle-birdie finish at The Belfry; The Dane finishes on 10 under and a shot clear of Sweden's Sebastian Soderberg, with Richie Ramsay, Connor Syme and Justin Walters in tied-third

Thorbjorn Olesen ended a four-year winless run on the DP World Tour as he snatched a one-shot victory after an incredible finish at the Betfred British Masters.

Olesen took a three-shot lead into the final day at The Belfry but trailed by two with two holes remaining, only to follow a 30-foot eagle at the par-five 17th by holing a 35-footer at the last to salvage a one-over 73 and pip Sebastian Soderberg to the title.

Scotland's Richie Ramsay double-bogeyed his final hole to drop into tied-third alongside compatriot Connor Syme and South Africa's Justin Walters, with Chase Hunna and Hurly Long three off the pace in a share of fifth.

"It's a massive tournament won by so many great names so it's a privilege to have my name on the trophy," Olesen said.

"It was obviously a pretty tough day and I hit a lot of shots to the left. I was really struggling. I somehow just kept going, and yeah, what a finish. Incredible."

Olesen bogeyed his opening hole of the day and undid a birdie at the third when he pulled his tee shot into the water and bogeyed the sixth, with the Dane holing a 30-footer to save par at the eighth but bogeyed the ninth to limp to the turn in 38.

The former Ryder Cup winner lost his lead for the first time when he three-putted the 14th and bogeyed the par-five next, only to jump back alongside Soderberg at the top of the leaderboard with his long-range eagle at the 17th.

Olesen had made an eagle-birdie finish during the third round and repeated the feat on Sunday, holing a monster birdie at the last to claim the most unlikely of victories and a first success since the 2018 Italian Open.

"Standing on 17, I'm thinking I can make birdie, birdie and maybe get into a play-off," Olesen added. "But obviously when I got the chance on 17, I prefer to take that. 18 is a tough hole, so par is a good score obviously. I just gave it everything."

Soderberg overturned a six-stroke deficit to set the initial clubhouse target with a four-under 68, although had to settle for second despite four birdies in a five-hole stretch on his back nine.

Teeing off some 70 minutes before the final group, the Swede took advantage of the par-five third but missed from eight feet to save par at the eighth, seeing him reach the turn in 36, then followed a 10-foot birdie at the 10th with three consecutive birdies from the 12th.

Soderberg failed to convert birdie opportunities at the 16th and 17th and scrambled a par on the last after a wayward tee shot, with the Swede's total matching the lowest round of the day.

Syme was two over for his round after eight holes before posting back-to-back birdies around the turn, with the Scot then responding to a bogey at the 14th by birdieing his next three holes to close a two-under 70.

Ramsay and Walters also finished on eight under after closing 71s, while tournament host Danny Willett ended in a share of 16th after a one-under 71.

The More You Know

For the last time, the PGA Championship is NOT run by the PGA Tour: An idiot's guide to who runs what in golf

wanamaker-trophy-pga-championship.jpg

Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images

There are a lot of confused golf fans right now as we near the one-year anniversary of that surprise "framework agreement" between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf's financial backers, the Public Investment Fund. Those two sides seemed to have a deal, yet pro golf remains as fractured as ever. Recently, I received a text from a friend asking, “Why is the PGA letting LIV guys play in the Masters?” I responded that it was best to discuss in person because it probably would have taken about an hour to explain.

But the purpose of this post is to help people like my (clueless) friend. And had this been written then, I could have simply texted back a link. Because neither the PGA or the PGA Tour, which is what he meant, was letting LIV golfers play in the Masters. The Masters, or rather, Augusta National Golf Club, was making that decision. Because Augusta National runs the Masters.

RELATED: Our 13 best bets to win the 2024 PGA Championship

But the club doesn’t run any other professional event, including the second (men’s) major on the calendar, the PGA Championship. And that event can choose to invite people as well like it recently did with Talor Gooch and a few other LIV guys . It's also the time of the year where the PGA (Professional Golfers' Association) vs. PGA Tour confusion reaches its peak, so let’s just establish that these two bodies split up in 1968 , in large part because the tour pros, led by stars like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, rightfully wanted a bigger piece of the media rights being paid by networks to broadcast their tournaments.

You don’t have to know all of that for the quiz, just remember that the PGA (club pros) and the PGA Tour (tour pros) are two separate entities. Kidding about the quiz, but here’s what else you need to know to keep golf’s most powerful bodies straight.

PGA of America

2008 Ryder Cup - Day 2

You know it as: That group of golf instructors who runs the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

Distinguishing features: New headquarters in Frisco, Texas, gigantic trophy for winner of PGA Championship and the slogans (RIP) “Glory’s Last Shot” and “This is MAJOR!”

Haterz say: "The PGA Championship should only count as a half major!"

More PGA Championship preview stories

dp world tour british masters leaderboard

Icon Sportswire

You know it as : That (male) golf tour with the best players. (Again, the PGA Tour and the PGA are NOT the same entity. One consists of the best golfers in the world. T he other consists of the best golf instructors in the world, who spend most of their time doing things other than playing golf.)

Distinguishing features: A season-long FedEx Cup points race with an $25 million prize, the Players Championship, new "signature" events offering $20 million purses and a marketing department that thought “Live under par” was a better slogan than “These guys are good.”

Haterz say: "Money can’t buy you a major championship!"

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/06/lpga-flag-blue.jpg

You know it as: That (female) golf tour with the best players.

Distinguishing features: Women golfers. No, but seriously, like on the men’s side, there is a split between the tour pros (LPGA Tour) and teaching pros, but it's not as pronounced with everything still falling under the LPGA's jurisdiction.

Haterz say: "They don’t draw the same TV ratings as men!"

U.S. Open - Preview Day 2

Andrew Redington

You know it as: That governing body that determines all the golf rules for the U.S. and Mexico, and runs national championships like the U.S. Open.

Distinguishing features: Blue blazers, difficult course setups.

Haterz say: "They ruin the U.S. Open more than they run it!" Also, “Why do these amateurs get to tell us pros what to do?” This has been a popular refrain recently with the move to rollback the golf ball. (We’ve got you covered with a fun explainer on this as well.)

R&A (Royal & Ancient)

51026317

David Cannon

You know it as: That even older (hence, the "Ancient" part) governing body that runs the British Open, AKA THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP to the hardos.

Distinguishing features: Headquarters at the Home of Golf in St. Andrews, makes the golf rules for the rest of the world other than the U.S. and Mexico.

Haterz say: "They should have acted earlier on male-only clubs hosting THE OPEN!"

RELATED: Get to know the courses of the British Open rota

Official World Golf Ranking

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/1/owgr-1.png

You know it as: Men's golf's world ranking. This one is pretty self-explanatory.

Distinguishing features: Mathematical formulas, rolling two-year period, coveted top-50 status, decision to not make LIV Golf events eligible for ranking points.

Haterz say: "How do people move up and down during weeks they don’t even play?! PGA Tour events are weighted unfairly! DP World Tour events are weighted unfairly! LIV is being treated unfairly!" (Basically, no one agrees with the OWGR.)

DP World Tour

1355069844

Stuart Franklin

You (still) know it as: The European Tour. (It changed names in 2022, because, well, money.)

Distinguishing features: Year-round schedule that goes all around the world and features a season-long points competition called the Race To Dubai. Formerly, the money list was called the Order of Merit. The DP World Tour also runs the Ryder Cup on that side of the pond. Which is why the resignations of stars like Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter after they jumped to LIV Golf, makes them ineligible for that biennial event going forward.

Haterz say: "It’s much easier to win on this tour than the PGA Tour!" Well, that’s what Paul Azinger said. And (*ducks*) he’s not wrong …

Korn Ferry Tour

1234706312

You know it as: That minor league tour.

Distinguishing features: A pathway to the PGA Tour, “Battlefield promotions,” a new sponsor every few years. (The LPGA Tour also has a feeder tour known as the Epson Tour.)

Haterz say: "What the heck is Korn Ferry?!" We’re told it's consulting, or something. (We know Epson makes printers.)

PGA Tour Champions

1433935562

Eakin Howard

You know it as: The Senior Tour

Distinguishing features: Old guys who hit it farther than they did in their prime thanks to technology, golf carts, 54-hole events with no cuts.

Haterz say: "The prize pool should go to the PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour instead of serving as another pension plan for (mostly) rich golfers!"

1437762580

Patrick Smith/LIV Golf

You know it as: That Saudi-backed golf league.

Distinguishing features: Questionable business plan, (huge) guaranteed contracts, teams, Greg Norman, 54-hole events with no cuts (like the seniors), no OWGR ranking points (also like the seniors), Pat Perez's lotto ticket.

Haterz say: " Everybody knows the ACES! " But they say it in a mocking tone. Confused again? Don't worry, there's a LOT going on—so this might require an in-person huddle as well.

PGA TOUR winner, beloved Masters analyst Peter Oosterhuis dies at age 75

Change Text Size

Peter Oosterhuis was probably best known to U.S. sports fans as the longtime voice of the 17th hole at Augusta National during CBS’s annual coverage of the Masters. Golf fans, however, knew that “Oosty” was worth a listen because he could really play. The Englishman was a member of six consecutive Ryder Cup teams, first representing Great Britain and Ireland in 1971 and later competing alongside continental Europeans in the biennial tournament. Among the Americans Oosterhuis beat in singles are World Hall of Fame members Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller and Gene Littler, and he defeated Palmer twice.

Remembering Peter Oosterhuis: Analyst, PGA TOUR winner passes away at 75

Oosterhuis parlayed his stylish game and charming British accent into a long announcing career with several networks, including CBS, for more than 15 years following his playing career. Oosterhuis retired from broadcasting in 2014 to deal with the effects of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Oosterhuis passed away peacefully this morning, one day shy of what would have been his 76th birthday.

Born in London in 1948 as the country was rebuilding from World War II, Oosterhuis enjoyed a stellar amateur golf career; he became the first schoolboy to represent Great Britain & Ireland at the Walker Cup and was a member of the Eisenhower Trophy team. He turned professional in the late 1960s and won the 1969 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award on the DP World Tour. Oosterhuis dominated the Tour by winning the Harry Vardon Trophy as leading its Order of Merit in four consecutive seasons (1971-74).

Peter Oosterhuis at Royal St George's Golf Club in Kent, England, in 1975. (Dennis Oulds/Getty Images)

After Oosterhuis won tournaments in Africa and Europe – including the national opens of France (twice, in 1973 and 1974) and Spain, seven DP World Tour titles and three on the Southern Africa Tour all told – he made his way to the States. He qualified for the PGA TOUR and played full time from 1975 to 1986.

Oosterhuis made his PGA TOUR debut at the 1971 Masters Tournament and eventually went on to play in 343 official tournaments. Oosterhuis is still tied for the all-time lead in Ryder Cup singles victories for either side with six.

In 1981, Oosterhuis enjoyed his best PGA TOUR season as he finished 28th on the final money list. He had been a steady money-winner, with three runner-up finishes to his credit, before he broke through at the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club outside Toronto. Trailing by three shots entering the final round, Oosterhuis fired a final-round 70 in difficult conditions to beat Jack Nicklaus, Bruce Lietzke and Andy North by one shot. The first-prize check of $76,500 was more than he had earned in any previous season.

“What a way to win after watching those big names come in and mine still staying up there on the leaderboard,” he said. “I am fortunate that the course is so tough. It allows no one to make a powerful finish.”

The following year, he finished runner-up for the second time at The Open Championship, falling to Gary Player by four shots at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s. Oosterhuis never won again, though, and eventually explored other careers in the game.

From 1987 through 1993, Oosterhuis was the Director of Golf at Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg, NJ and famed Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles. After working as the lead analyst for The Golf Channel’s incipient coverage of the DP World Tour, Oosty became a fixture on CBS’s broadcasting of the PGA TOUR, working the Masters from 1997 through 2014.

Having moved with his second wife Ruth Ann to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he was a member at Quail Hollow Club, he retired from broadcasting following CBS’s coverage of the 2014 PGA Championship and later revealed he was battling with early-onset Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife, sons Rob and Rich, stepsons Byron and Matt and four grandchildren Peyton, Turner, Sutton and Lachlan.
